With the ageing of the population in Western countries, the prevalence of disability and mobility problems is increasing, highlighting the urgent need to improve accessibility in environments where people spend a significant amount of time, such as collective housing. This paper examines the accessibility of building entrances in collective housing in the Region of Murcia, south-eastern Spain, where 9.8% of the population is estimated to live with disabilities. Starting with a thorough review of national and regional accessibility regulations, this study applies a robust methodology by conducting fieldwork in 150 buildings to assess compliance and identify barriers. The methodology involved a systematic assessment of the accessibility of entrances, using criteria derived from the regulations, and a specific proposal of the accessibility solutions required for each case. The key findings show that the most effective way for improving the accessibility is a properly constructed ramp, with over 40% of buildings requiring the installation or improvement of ramps, either as a stand-alone solution or in combination with other adaptations. In 54% of cases, a multi-faceted approach was required to meet accessibility standards. It was also noted that older buildings typically require higher adaptation costs. Based on these findings, the study provides specific recommendations, such as the construction of ramps and other critical interventions, to improve the accessibility of buildings. The rise in outdoor temperatures and heatwaves highlights the limitations of buildings in adapting to warming conditions, even in temperate climates. This paper analyses the indoor overheating of residential dwellings in Pamplona (a city in northern Spain, with a Cfb climate) using an urban-scale diagnostic methodology and presents different envelopes' retrofitting scenarios as a strategy to reduce it. The results come from energy simulations conducted during an extremely warm summer in 2022, considering the microclimate effects. The residential typologies most vulnerable to overheating are those with only one orientation, built before the EPBD 2002, and located on top floors. These dwellings show a 23.7% mean of indoor overheating hours (IOH), representing approximately 870 h above the EN 16798-1:2019 adaptive threshold from May to September. Renovating building envelopes to meet current energy standards reduces the IOH by an average of 8.6% and up to 15.35% in the most vulnerable typologies. In the retrofitting scenario with green roof systems, indoor temperatures are up to 0.5 °C lower than when roofs are renovated with traditional systems. This study assists policy-makers in preventing the risk of overheating within cities and encourages them to promote nature-based solutions in order to adapt urban residential buildings and cities to warming conditions. In line with the decarbonization of the domestic sector to meet the 2050 climate neutrality targets, this paper describes the energy, economic, and environmental analysis of a set of different novel configurations of polygeneration installations to provide electricity, air conditioning, domestic hot water, and desalinated water for a building of 80 dwellings. All arrangements were designed to cover 100% of the five demands required in the building with renewable energy only, from photovoltaic (PV) and photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) panels and biomass backup boilers (BB). Electricity can be sold to or purchased from the grid without electrical storage with batteries. Additional electricity generation with thermoelectric generators (TEG) coupled to the PVTs, and the BB was explicitly analyzed. The choice of electrically or thermally activated technologies (heat pump, HP/single-effect absorption chiller, SEAC for cooling and multi-effect distillation, MED/reverse osmosis, RO for desalination) created four configurations from the basic structure based on solar and biomass sources. Thus, the paper has studied four designs in detail and applied them to three case studies corresponding to different locations in Spain. They were modeled with TRNSYS and included specific models for desalination technologies. Both structures provide important energy and CO2 savings concerning the conventional supply of the building demands. The novel life-cycle analysis approach further increases the lifetime CO2 savings for all configurations as well. The electric option (the combination of HP and RO for cooling and desalting) was, by far, the most attractive solution in terms of liability and lower investment required in the three case studies. The value of a house depends not only on the quality of the construction elements but also on the functionality of its installations. Making mistakes during the design and even execution phases of installations in newly built homes is common. This paper determines, catalogues, and quantifies faults in electrical and telecommunications installations in dwellings based on owners' complaints and using the 'learning from faults' philosophy. To this end, 154 complaints concerning these installations in all of Spain were analyzed and protocolized. The results show that, in all types of dwellings, the most common fault was 'alterations and malfunctions' (81%), followed by 'incorrect or lack of placement of elements' (14%). The pathological origin with the greatest presence in the research was 'shortcomings and omissions in the installation' (40%) and 'anomalies in the installation' (36%). Moreover, all functional deterioration processes as well as the type of dwelling where each of these parameters occurred most were defined and quantified (association between each fault and its cause). Finally, the 'probability factor' (PF) was determined, which numerically quantifies the probable existence of complaints according to four ranges. Effectively utilizing low-grade thermal energy is a promising approach to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions while reducing the burden on centralized power grids. Current thermoacoustic heat pumps and power generators face challenges such as high onset temperature differentials and low performance. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a gas-liquid resonator into a thermoacoustic combined heat and power systems to recover low-grade thermal energy in residential buildings. Through Sage modeling and calculations, the internal characteristics of the proposed system and its output performance under different operating conditions are explored. At a heating temperature of 350 °C, the system can generate 6.4 kW of output thermal power, 0.9 kW of electricity, and overall exergy efficiency is 79.3 %. Combining neural network models with case studies conducted in Spain and Finland, the system can annually save 5.6 MWh and 20.7 MWh in fuel energy, reduce emissions of 1374 kg and 5180 kg of carbon dioxide, and save a total cost of €611 and €2324, respectively. Furthermore, comparisons with other emerging micro-CHP systems highlight the efficiency of the proposed system. This paper is based on a review of owners’ perspectives of two sun and golf destinations – Albufeira (in the south of Portugal) and Islantilla (in the south of Spain), using a cross-regional sample, based on owners’ descriptions collected from ownersdirect.co.uk (online vacation rental platform). The aim is to understand the owners’ vacation rentals descriptions depicting their perspectives in categories such as sense of place, hospitality and house facilities. This exploratory research departs from grounded theory, which means that no presuppositions were set. The qualitative feedback from the study reaffirms that the sense of place is not a static concept, as Albufeira and Islantilla owners’ descriptions bring together emotional and cognitive elements personalizing their properties and the surrounding environment. The results suggest that togetherness, relaxation, continuity and place attachment are the most highlighted points when announcing their properties, particularly in Albufeira. The analysis of this phenomenon through an innovative design that puts together textual analysis of the owners’ online vacation rental description and the virtual environment is one of the main contributions of this paper. The limited descriptions of the destination give rise to the absence of the sense of place from a local perspective to the owners of a second home in those destinations. A procedure for improving the energy, economic and environmental sustainability of the transformation houses in low-voltage distribution networks is described in this paper. This procedure is based on the reduction of the transformer consumption, copper and core losses. Likewise, the procedure distinguishes between transformation houses with old and new transformers. The reduction of core losses, replacing transformers with others of lower power or that are more efficient, achieves significant improvements in energy and environmental aspects. The reduction of copper losses, and applying reactive compensation techniques, such as harmonic filtering and load balancing, applied in old and new transformation houses, have a greater impact on cost savings, especially when there are capacitive consumptions, as the Circular 3/2020 of the National Markets and Competition Commission of Spain determines. The procedure has been applied to an industrial transformation house, which has an old 1600 kVA transformer, resulting in significant economic savings and CO2 reductions of more than 60%, after replacing the current transformer with a more efficient one. Designing a low energy building requires to evaluate a large number of parameters: design combinations, element thermal characteristics, HVAC systems efficiencies, etc. All of them determine the space heating and space cooling energy demands, energy consumptions, and life cycle cost over the lifetime of the building. This paper presents the achievements of SEDICAE research project consisting on a new methodology based on a tabu search and a simplified method to calculate energy consumptions. The methodology is designed to estimate the annual energy demand, life-cycle cost and energy rating. A second process is included to select the HVAC system is developed for the building designed with this methodology. In general, builders should look for low energy, but investment in building design is a limiting factor. This paper show the relationship between energy efficiency index and investment in optimized residential building. Furthermore, the best energy rate is obtained applying the HVAC systems in the integrated optimization method for residential buildings. This methodology reduces investment, reduce the energy demand and selects the best construction materials, allowing to study the cost in different economic scenarios. In this paper, the energy benefits of switchable insulation systems (SIS) are assessed when applied as shades for windows as well as dynamic insulation for exterior walls of residential buildings located in European countries including Belgium and Spain. A series of analyses is performed for detached houses and apartments representing common Belgian residential buildings to determine the energy performance of SIS when deployed to windows and exterior walls and operated using simplified rule-based controls. The analysis results indicate that SIS-integrated windows can achieve significant energy savings for both dwelling types in Belgium, including the elimination of any mechanical cooling and a reduction of up to 44% of heating energy end-use. Moreover, the results show that SIS can offer even more energy efficiency and thermal comfort benefits when deployed to both windows and exterior walls for residential buildings. These energy efficiency benefits are higher, especially for reducing heating needs, for the milder climates of Belgium and Spain. The energy retrofitting of residential stock is not always straightforward where heritage protected housing is concerned. In southern Europe, many examples built under the Modern Movement codes are now obsolete in terms of energy efficiency. The aim of this paper is to assess the potential for improvement of comfort conditions and energy efficiency in Mediterranean heritage residential buildings, through the incorporation of passive strategies in keeping with preserving heritage values. Long-term monitoring and field tests in representative flats of the case-study building were carried out and, focusing on a single example, adaptive comfort equations were used to assess results. The passive strategies considered are the thermal isolation of the air cavities of walls, changing window frames, optimizing window glazing, and setting up regular mechanical ventilation rates for indoor air changes. The construction sector has one of the most polluting economic activities. In this context, several policies are being launched by the European Union to promote the transition to a sustainable economy, and timber construction is a safe way to contribute to it. Due to the recent development of multistorey timber buildings, the architectural and structural typologies have not been widely studied yet and with not many studies from Southern Europe. In this context, the main objective of this research is to identify and analyse the trends in the use of wood as a structural material in multistorey timber buildings (≥4 floors) in the SUDOE region, i.e., Spain, Portugal, and Southwest France. The methodology involved identifying 28 timber buildings in the SUDOE region and 101 worldwide, most of them in Europe, and sending online information request forms to different actors involved in their design and construction, collecting plans and BIM models, and performing technical study visits to the identified reference buildings. The collected information was included in open-access technical datasheets, and different indicators in terms of building uses, structural system, wood species, and wood volume, among others, were defined. The results showed that there is a tendency to construct taller timber buildings in the SUDOE region with a predominant use of local softwood species, with ratios of wood volume per built area varying between 0.3 and 0.4 m3/m2. The mass timber typology using cross-laminated timber (CLT) is mainly used for residential buildings, while post and beam are used for educational and offices buildings. This paper evaluates a parametric analysis towards compliance with the nZEB standard, which in Spain is defined by the latest update of the Technical Building Code. This regulation is critically assessed regarding its ability to promote the concept of cost optimization, promote renewable energy sources and minimize primary energy consumption in the residential sector. To this end, a virtual building was defined and multiple designs were evaluated using DesignBuilder software. A set of 170 alternative scenarios was established and parametrically evaluated for five cities representing the five climatic zones of inland Spain (Bilbao, Burgos, Seville, Madrid and Almeria). The results were evaluated focusing on cost-cost effectiveness and primary energy consumption values for the different scenarios, evaluating them in relation to the minimum requirements set by the regulation. The great potential of photovoltaic energy is highlighted, which allows negative values to be obtained for the two Equivalent Uniform Annual Costs due to the cost avoided through self-consumption. This fact makes the optimal designs tend to electrification, specifically through air and ground source heat pumps. It is worth mentioning that the new Code has only established a minimum target for renewable self-consumption in the residential sector, which should be reinforced in future updates. Studies on self-consumption in residential use are constantly evolving, and society claims new solutions in response to changes to new paradigms. This paper aims to optimise the sizing of a self-consumption installation for collective self-consumption in a residential building under the Spanish regulatory framework. The study considers the current price volatility in the retail electricity Spanish market and focuses on the techno-economic analysis of self-consumption in a building consisting of 12 dwellings using photovoltaic energy and the possible support of a storage system. The three aspects analysed are the sizing of the self-consumption facility, the use of smart appliances to shift their consumption to more cost-effective times and the sharing of the renewable energy generated by the facility among the consumers participating in the collective self-consumption. This study employs two models, an average-day model and a whole-year model. The techno-economic analysis yields that between the two self-consumption modalities for residential consumption, the modality with surplus simplified compensation is more profitable than the one without surpluses. Finally, the study focuses on sharing the total renewable energy generated among the participants. The results indicate that both ex-ante and ex-post dynamic sharing brings few benefits. Energy poverty can be defined as the inability to pay the bills that are required for maintaining the comfort conditions (usually in winter) in dwellings. The use of energy efficient systems is one way forward to mitigate this problem, with one option being the electrically driven air source heat pump water heater. This paper assesses the performance of a centralised heat pump (200 kW of heating capacity) to meet the space heating demand of block dwellings in Madrid (tier four out of five in winter severity in Spain). Two models have been developed to obtain the following variables: the hourly thermal energy demand and the off-design heat pump performance. The proposed heat pump is driven by a motor with variable rotational speed to modulate the heating capacity in an efficient way. A back-up system is also considered to meet the peak demand. A levelised cost of heating of 92.22 €/MWh is obtained for a middle-level energy efficiency in housing (class E, close to D). Moreover, the following energy-environmental parameters have been achieved: more than 74% share of renewable energy in primary energy and 131.7 g CO2 avoided per kWh met. A reduction of 60% in the heating cost per dwelling is obtained if an energy retrofit is carried out, improving the energy performance class from E to C. The need for airtightness control is a reality given its impact on buildings' energy use and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). For the past few years, this fact has resulted in energy performance regulations establishment that involves airtightness requirements in many countries in Europe and North America. In this sense, efforts should not only be focused on new buildings, but also existing ones. Considering that around 90% of the built stock in the EU is expected to still be standing in 2050 and that almost 75% of the buildings are energy inefficient, attention must be paid to retrofitting actions. Airtightness predictive models have become useful in the decision-making process and to estimate input values in energy performance simulation tools. So far, several predictive models have been developed in different countries. However, specific construction systems and practices lead to a lack of consensus regarding the impact of different factors on airtightness performance. Therefore, the applicability of existing models is limited to their specific contexts. This paper presents a predictive model for envelope airtightness, which was developed from a database that contains a fully characterised representative sample of the residential building stock in Spain. A General Linear Model (GLM) was considered to assess significant variables related to the age of the building, typology, building state, construction system, and dimensions. As a result, a predictive model is presented and validated. Overall, even if some limitations were identified, the relevance of the model proposed is warranted from the statistical point of view. Energy analysis in residential buildings considers three main areas of consumption: heating, air conditioning and domestic hot water. Traditionally, the former, heating, has been the most significant area of consumption in Spain but, due to modern technological advances and both the national and European regulations in force, this is no longer the case. The objective of this research is to define some strong, verified consumption patterns which make it possible to compare systems with one another and evaluate their influence on the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings, thereby, making progress toward improving generation systems. Real domestic hot water consumption measurements were collected over a one-year period for more than 500 Spanish properties in five different buildings located in both public and private residential developments. Moreover, a comparative study of the indicators set out in Spanish and other European regulations was carried out, evaluating their impact on energy performance certification. Finally, the suitability of the current indicators, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, was evaluated, concluding that the unit of measurement used in the Spanish regulations is not the most appropriate, and confirming that both seasonal impact and residential development type must be considered due to their influence on domestic hot water consumption. Retrofitting the existing building stock is widely accepted as a crucial factor to reaching 2030 and 2050 climate and energy targets, given that the building sector is among the top three most dominant energy consumers. This paper presents a bottom-up study which uses calibrated and parameterized energy stock models (building archetypes), while also incorporating building stock information from a large database. The thermal performance of the existing social housing stock of southern Spain is assessed through dynamic simulation under present and future climate change scenarios. Subsequently, several passive and low-cost operation-related strategies are numerically optimized through genetic algorithms to determine the best retrofit solutions, taking into consideration global warming scenarios. A multi-objective decision analysis is carried out by optimizing annual overheating hours (%), annual undercooling hours (%), and investment costs (€/m2). Among the conclusions reported, it is important to note the feasibility of implementing low-cost retrofit strategies considering investment costs of up to around 200 €/m2, which would lead to average annual overheating and undercooling hours below 55 % and 45 %, respectively. However, retrofit solutions exclusively based on passive and low-cost operation measures were proven to be significantly limited to improve thermal comfort results in the social stock. Featured Application: Model for designing and implementing self-protection plans for public buildings. Adaptability of self-protection plans for elderly residences. COVID-19 is reflecting the importance of self-protection plans in nursing homes, especially when it concerns persons of older age. Self-protection plans intend to prevent and control the risks of residential buildings. The goal of this research is to develop a design process for self-protection plans of public buildings, and specifically a nursing home. In this regard, it is key for the viability of the nursing home operations to be capable of adapting to any potential future event. Starting from some initial hypotheses that establish the need for adaptability, a self-protection plan model is developed for public buildings based on a new approach consisting of four elements and three steps. It was applied to an elderly residence which is currently under construction. The methodology followed has consisted of a process by stages, to design and implement a novel self-protection plan for public buildings. Subsequently, it has been applied to the specific case study, using the most common tools and applications available for later analysis of the result obtained with the starting hypotheses. The results show how the research allows an increase in the adaptability of self-protection plans for any publicly owned building, although there is an extensive and precise subsequent work of adaptation to specific cases considering the different legal frameworks which makes the work challenging. Finally, the research on adaptability and its application for elderly residences enabled the derivation of recommendations regarding self-protection plans in general and specifically in homes for the elderly. The building sector is responsible for more than 40% of final energy consumption in Europe; consequently, retrofitting existing buildings can significantly contribute to mitigate greenhouse emissions. Nevertheless, although the European Union has introduced relevant policy instruments, up to now the annual retrofit rates are considerably low with an average of 0.2% at European level. Understanding the past would support the success of the new strategies, such as the recent ones launched through the New Green Deal, which reinforces the importance of renovating existing buildings stock, as the main aim of the renovation wave. As a starting point for assessing the main challenges to allocate the Recovery funds, this paper provides a review of Spain's relevant literature to clearly define the characterization of the existing building stock, which actions have been typically considered under the scope of retrofits, and which strategies have been implemented until now, considering both, private and public initiatives and public financial schemes. The present work has a strong focus on energy-related strategies, although other interrelated actions are mentioned, such as accessibility measures and interior refurbishment of dwellings. Differences and similarities within these approaches are presented through the analysis of 27 relevant references of retrofitting actions and 52 references of financial mechanisms. As in Spain 93% of multifamily buildings were constructed prior to the national transposition of the first Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD), and therefore are in need of deep energy renovations, the retrofitting of multifamily buildings topic has been widely addressed, even though often in a disjointed manner. The study suggests that although historically there have been several recommended strategies, few are conceived as integral actions, only 15% of the intervention packages refer passive and active energy-related measures and renewable energy incorporation. Furthermore, considering the antiquity of the building stock and the advantage of addressing the topic through clusters, only 63% of the resources directly refer these actions to specific clusters among the six distinctive periods, although in most cases focusing their recommendations on buildings constructed before 1980 where the worst energy performance buildings are concentrated. Concerning public financial and funding instruments, the research illustrates that there has been a substantial increment of programs over the last years promoting energy-related measures, renewable energy and other complementary aspects such as accessibility and interior renovations, mainly for older clusters. Nevertheless, the funds constitute only 8% of the necessary declared investments, which along with the dispersion between the different procedures and the complexity of the processes, have significantly reduced the global impact of these actions without generating robust and oriented market dynamics. Despite the several resources found, both financial instruments and guidelines tend to describe in more detail strategies related to heating demand and consumption and not delve into other relevant actions for warmer climates, fact associated both to the dynamics coming from other countries, and to a vision of the past in which people do not consume refrigeration. Featured Application: Multi-objective optimization problem: to minimize the annual heating demand of the building and the standard deviation of the annual demand of the different dwellings. Avoiding excessive insulation reduces the risk of overheating in summer. Buildings are known to be responsible for about a third of energy consumption in developed countries. This situation, together with the fact that the existing building stock is being renovated at a very slow pace, makes it crucial to focus on the energy retrofitting of buildings as the only way to reduce their contribution to these energy consumptions and the consequences derived from them in terms of pollution and climate change. The same level of insulation and the same type of windows is usually proposed for all dwellings in a building block. This article shows that since the improvements required by each dwelling in the same block are different, the proposed solution must also be different. The methodology is proposed for a practical case consisting of an apartment block in Cádiz, a demonstration building of the European RECO2ST project. To achieve the optimum solution for each case, a multi-objective optimization problem is solved: to minimize the annual heating demand of the building and the standard deviation of the annual demand of the different dwellings. Thanks to the use of the proposed methodology, it is possible to bring the building to a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) level, while avoiding excessive insulation that causes overheating in summer. To do so, the effects of two different zoning controls in different types of apartment, occupancy patterns, building characteristics and locations in Spain, have been assessed. Different combinations of these parameters have resulted in 336 different scenarios that have been dynamically simulated using Design Builder software. The obtained energy results have been analysed in detail. Moreover, an economic analysis of these results has also been carried out to evaluate the economic feasibility of these systems in residential buildings located in temperate climates. This has been calculated by evaluating the maximum investment that can be assumed in each scenario to achieve different payback periods (namely 10 and 20 years). The results obtained show that these systems could be a cost-effective strategy aimed at reducing the energy consumption in residential buildings, not only in cold climates, such as is shown in the literature (the majority of the studies found are located in the UK and northern countries), but also in more temperate climates, such as that of Spain. Savings of around 20% were obtained in the most usual scenarios in Spain (coherent with results obtained in previous studies in the UK found in the literature), showing that in several cases, the initial investment in zone-controlled systems could be paid off in less than ten years, especially in large apartments and the coldest weather conditions. The member states of the European Union must increase the energy efficiency in residential buildings within the plan to reduce the external energy dependence and energy shortage. In the present work, a standard building representative of the existing buildings in Spain built before 1980 was used. An evaluation of the energy rating of that building in each climatic zone of Spain was carried out to assess the influence of these climatic conditions on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This analysis was carried out with Cerma software according to the calculation procedure demanded by the Spanish Building Technical Code. Results show that E or F energy score was obtained for the different climatic zones and with significant differences in CO2 emissions, even for climatic zones with the same energy rating. A sensitivity study of the necessary enhancements in each climatic zone was carried out to analyze the influence of most common energy demand and thermal system improvements, and combinations of them. Also, the minimum requirements to obtain D qualification in each Spanish climatic zone were obtained. As a result, it is possible to reduce emissions in Spain by over 3.5 Mt CO2 per year. In climatic zones with initial qualification E, it is possible to reach a D label, avoiding 40% of the initial CO2 emissions and reducing primary energy consumption to about 50 kWh/m2 year (over 60% reduction). For the climatic zones with initial qualification F, over 53% of the initial CO2 emissions are avoided by reaching D label. Zones with the highest heating demand (over 230 kWh/m2 year) and very low cooling demand need to improve thermal systems by means of a heat pump. Finally, some policy measures to create lines of financial aids or subsidies for the implementation of actions to reduce energy demand in Spanish homes are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The poor maintenance of social dwellings causes the possible building deficiencies to be significantly increased, especially when most of these dwellings have been built before any thermal standard and without considering the effect of climate change. Façades are one of the building elements which are most degraded by the contact with the exterior, and surface condensation is the most common cause. This study applies the calculation of surface condensation from ISO 13788 to a representative case of social dwelling in Spain for all climate zones, both in the current and 2050 scenarios. Risks of corrosion, mould formation, and surface condensation were studied in nine different points of the façade, which were validated by in-situ measurements. The results determined that there was a greater risk of condensation or mould depending on the climate zone, and thermal resistance significantly influenced data variation in future scenarios. The results also showed that an adequate ventilation generally decreased risks, removing the risk of mould and surface condensation by 2050. To predict the results obtained, a model based on artificial neural networks was generated, and it could also be used to estimate risks in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Outdoor domestic water use is often targeted by demand management strategies. However, despite a rich empirical evidence base coming from primary studies, it is still unclear how factors that influence this type of demand interact and which are the most suitable to be addressed by water conservation programs. Based on 423 scientific contributions, we develop a research synthesis combining a variety of techniques to create a theoretical model of the relationships among factors most consistently observed in the literature. The findings uncover a great degree of complexity in terms of interactions between spatial-structural, social-structural, and cultural and psychological factors at different scales. For researchers, the methodology and the outcomes can be useful to better frame existing and future research within the literature on the topic. Background: Lived health and biological health are two different perspectives of health introduced by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Since in the concept of lived health the impact of the environment on biological health is inherently included, it seems intuitive that when identifying the environmental determinants of health, lived health is the appropriate outcome. The Multilevel Item Response Theory (MLIRT) model has proven to be a successful method when dealing with the relation between a latent variable and observed variables. The objective of this study was to identify environmental factors associated with lived health when controlling for biological health by using the MLIRT framework. Methods: We performed a psychometric study using cross-sectional data from the Spanish Survey on Disability, Independence and Dependency Situation. Data were collected from 17,303 adults living in 15,263 dwellings. The MLIRT model was used for each of the two steps of the analysis to: (1) calculate people's biological health abilities and (2) estimate the association between lived health and environmental factors when controlling for biological health. The hierarchical structure of individuals in dwellings was considered in both models. Results: Social support, being able to maintain one's job, the extent to which one's health needs are addressed and being discriminated against due to one's health problems were the environmental factors identified as associated with lived health. Biological health also had a strong positive association with lived health. Conclusions: This study identified environmental factors associated with people's lived health differences within and between dwellings according to the MLIRT-model approach. Energy consumption rose about 28% over the 2001 to 2011 period in the Spanish residential sector. In this environment, domestic hot water (DHW) represents the second highest energy demand. There are several methodologies to estimate DHW consumption, but each methodology uses different inputs and some of them are based on obsolete data. DHW energy consumption estimation is a key tool to plan modifications that could enhance this consumption and we decided to update the methodologies. We studied DHW consumption with data from 10 apartments in the same building during 18 months. As a result of the study, we updated one chosen methodology, adapting it to the current situation. One of the challenges to improve efficiency of DHW use is that most of people are not aware of how it is consumed in their homes. To help this information to reach consumers, we developed a website to allow users to estimate the final electrical energy needed for DHW. The site uses three estimation methodologies and chooses the best fit based on information given by the users. Finally, the application provides users with recommendations and tips to reduce their DHW consumption while still maintaining the desired comfort level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple studies have been carried out on the correct estimation of the damages (direct tangible losses) associated with floods. However, the complex analysis and the multitude of variables conditioning the damage estimation, as well as the uncertainty in their estimation, make it difficult, even today, to reach one single, complete solution to this problem. In no case has the influence that the topographic relationship between the main floor of a residential building and the surrounding land have in the estimation of flood economic damage been analysed. To carry out this analysis, up to a total of 28 magnitude–damage functions (with different characteristics and application scales) were selected on which the effect of over-elevation and under-elevation of the main floor of the houses was simulated (at intervals of 20 cm, between −0.6 and +1 m). According to each of the two trends, an overestimation or underestimation of flood damage was observed. This pattern was conditioned by the specific characteristics of each magnitude–damage function, meaning that the percentage of damage became asymptotic from a certain flow depth value. In a real scenario, the consideration of this variable (as opposed to its non-consideration) causes an average variation in the damage estimation around 30%. Based on these results, the analysed variable can be considered as (1) another main source of uncertainty in the correct estimation of flood damage, and (2) an essential variable to take into account in a flood damage analysis for the correct estimation of loss. The main objective of this article is to explore the causes of household electricity poverty in Spain from an innovative perspective. Based on evidence of energy inequality across households with different income levels, a quantile regression approach was used to better capture the heterogeneity of determinants of energy poverty across different levels of electricity expenditure. The results illustrate some interesting and counter-intuitive findings about the relationship between household income and electricity poverty, and the technical efficiency of quantile regression compared to the imprecise results of a standard single coefficient/OLS approach.
