This paper presents the technical, environmental, and economic evaluation of integrating various combinations of renewable energy sources-based systems in the expansion of a district heating and cooling network of a Technology Park near Barcelona in Spain. At present, a combined heat and power plant running on fossil fuels serves the heating, cooling, and electricity demand of the Park. However, this energy demand is expected to increase substantially in the coming years. EnergyPRO software was used to model the energy demand growth till 2030. Validation of the software application was done by making a base model using real plant data from the year 2014. The software was then used to project the energy supply based on three 15-year scenarios, having different combinations of renewable energy technologies, from 2016 until 2030. Primary energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and the net present value obtained in each scenario were used to decide the best combinations of renewable energy sources. The results of the study showed that presently, biomass boilers combined with absorption chillers and supported with solar thermal cooling are the most competitive technologies in comparison to ground source heat pumps for large DHC networks. This is mainly because of the lower primary energy consumption (624,380 MWh/year in 2030 vs. 665,367 MWh/year), higher net present value (NPV) (222 million € vs. 178 million €), and lower CO2 emissions (107,753 tons/year in 2030 vs. 111,166 tons/year) obtained as a result of the simulations. Solar-powered air conditioners offer a high potential for energy-efficient cooling with a high economic feasibility. They can significantly reduce the energy consumption in the building sector, which is essential to meet the greater ambition of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% in the EU by 2050. This paper presents a computational model development capable of simulating the behaviour of a photovoltaic-assisted heat pump in different locations and working conditions. In addition, this model has been used to optimise a solar on-grid air conditioning system. The generated model has been validated with experimental data obtained in a real facility for a whole summer of operation (more than 100 tested days) in a Mediterranean climate (Alicante, Spain). According to the simulation results, the average Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of the system is 16.0, 10.7 and 7.8 in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, respectively. The optimisation analysis has proven that the severity of the climatic region increases the costs as well as the optimum PV power to drive the AC unit. The obtained values for the the PV power and the annualised cost are 400 W and 506.2 € for Barcelona, 900 W and 536.7 € for Madrid, and 1300 W and 564.7 € for Seville. The annualised cost and the CO 2 emission levels are higher for the conventional system (no PV panels) than for the solar on-grid system, regardless of the installed PV power. In the last decade, market-mediated financial incentives for energy-efficient construction drawn from information policy, including energy performance certificates (EPC), have been intensively researched. While hedonic-based research seems to confirm a positive correlation between residential prices and EPC ratings, opinion-based studies have found that these ratings have a negligible effect on price formation. This paper explores whether insufficient control of non-energy-related architectural attributes in hedonic specifications is responsible for such a divergence. To achieve this, a case-by-case quality assessment is performed for a sample of listed apartments in Barcelona. Then, architectural assessment is introduced as a control in the context of hedonic analysis. The results suggest that EPC ratings show a positive correlation with prices (1.8% price increase for each EPC increment) only when location, general architectural attributes, and basic quality attributes are controlled. Conversely, when architectural quality is thoroughly controlled, such a correlation disappears. However, EPC rating remains as a price driver (7.5% price increase for A/B/C ratings) for the upper tier of apartments in central and affluent zones. Such findings have relevant implications for developers and energy policy. • The concomitance of housing energy performance with its quality attributes is problematic. • Strict control of housing quality attributes leads to a zero energy premium. • Only upper-tier dwellings (A/B/C) in affluent districts receive a 7.5% energy premium.
