An Ms 6.5 earthquake shocked the Ludian County, Yunnan Province, China, on 3 August 2014 and triggered the Hongshiyan landslide dam. The dam, with a height of 83 m and a lake capacity of 260 × 10 m, threatened more than 10,000 people. A unique feature of this landslide dam was that it formed between a man-made dam and a hydropower plant. An existing drainage tunnel connecting the lake and the hydropower plant became a natural drainage conduit for the landslide dam, which played an important role in the mitigation of the landslide dam risks. This paper reports a quantitative risk assessment for the Hongshiyan landslide dam considering both engineering and non-engineering risk mitigation measures. The risk assessment is divided into three stages according to the implementation of two engineering measures: construction of a diversion channel and excavation of a branch drainage tunnel. The dam breaching hydrographs, flood zones, population at risk, and likely fatalities in each of the three stages are analysed. The optimum evacuation strategy in each stage is also studied based on the principle of minimum total consequence. It is found that the diversion channel decreases the dam breaching peak discharge and the associated risks significantly. The branch drainage tunnel prevent the landslide dam from overtopping failure in non-flooded period; however, the landslide dam may fail by overtopping in a future flood if the inflow rate is larger than the outflow rate through the drainage tunnels, resulting in serious losses of lives and properties. The dam breaching risks in all the three stages could be largely reduced by the optimal evacuation decision, which shows that timely evacuation is vital to save life and properties. Due to the dual influence of climate change and human activities, the water cycle patterns in the lakesheds of the Yunnan karst plateau are undergoing significant changes, leading to increasingly prominent ecological issues. In the history of Lake Yangzong, an artificial water-diversion channel was excavated, altering the lake basin structure. Human activities have intensified, posing severe challenges to water resource supply and water security in recent decades. To investigate the significant increase in human activities, the temporal and phase changes, and the resulting transformation of the water and carbon cycles in the Lake Yangzong basin, we applied X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) to scan elements continuously in a 10.2 m sediment core from this lake. By combining correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), core chronology, and total organic carbon (TOC) content, we reconstructed the historical sequence of geochemical element contents in the Lake Yangzong catchment over the past 13,000 years. The results show that PC1 and PC2 contribute 78.4% and 10.3%, respectively, suggesting that erosion intensity is the main factor influencing the lake sedimentation process. From 13,400 to 680 cal a BP (calibrated years before the present), the sedimentation process in Lake Yangzong was mainly controlled by climatic conditions, with vegetation degradation during cold periods and relatively high erosion intensity in the watershed. During the Yuan dynasty, a province was established by the central government in Yunnan, promoting settlement and attracting a large number of immigrants from other provinces to Yunnan. Human activities in the Lake Yangzong basin began to intensify, surpassing natural changes and becoming the dominant force influencing the sedimentation process. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the population and cultivated land area in Yunnan further increased, resulting in the significant exacerbation of erosion and soil loss in the watershed due to vegetation destruction. In the year 1388, the Tangchi Canal was excavated, transforming Lake Yangzong to an outflow lake, causing Ca2+ to be lost through the Tangchi Canal and preventing the formation of precipitation due to oversaturation. The research results indicate that human activities in the Lake Yangzong area have intensified since the Yuan dynasty, leading to increased erosion intensity. The excavation of the outflow canal transformed Lake Yangzong from an inland lake basin into an outflow state, simultaneously generating a significant transformation in the water and carbon cycling patterns in the watershed. The Central Yunnan Plateau (CYP) is located in the southeastern end of the Sichuan‐Yunnan rhombic block. CYP is surrounded by the South China Block to the east and the Indo‐China Block to the southwest. Stratigraphy and topography research shows the relative surface uplift of the CYP since the Pliocene. However, the widely accepted model of lower crustal flow is very difficult to fully explain the surface uplift of CYP, with faults and fold structures in the brittle shallow crust. The lower crust thickening led by the lower crustal flow only contributes 34–54% (600–950 m) of the total surface uplift. The wide‐angle seismic profiles and topography analysis show that the CYP surface uplift is predominately a consequence of isostatic compensation due to surface erosion, upper‐middle crustal shortening, and lower crustal thickening. The average isostatic adjustment caused by surface erosion of CYP is about 500 m, which is about 29% of the total surface uplift (1750 m). The GPS station velocities, focal mechanisms, and seismic anisotropy show the strong decoupling relationship between upper‐middle crust and lower crust. In detail, there is a movement with southeast‐directed and clockwise rotation around the Eastern Himalayan syntaxis in the upper‐middle crust, although south‐directed flow in the lower crust. The southeast motion of the upper‐middle crust could be resolved into two portions. The eastward component of upper‐middle crust motion is obstructed by the South China Block in the east. The result is the W‐E direction shortening of upper‐middle crust, shown by the S‐N trending CYP anticlinorium. The W‐E direction shortening of upper‐middle crust contributes 17–37% (300–650 m) of the total surface uplift. In contrast, the southward component of upper‐middle crust motion, shown by the sinistral strike‐slip displacement of the Xiaojiang fault zone, could pass through the Red River fault zone into the Indo‐China Block, where the left‐lateral Dien Bien Phu Fault would be the counterpart. The contribution of upper‐middle crustal shortening in a S‐N direction is very limited. The lower crustal flow could have been playing a prominent role in the growth of the whole southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and the contribution from upper‐middle crustal shortening cannot be ignored in some local areas.
