An important stage in the study and attribution of the Russian binding of the 18th — early 20th century is the description of the flyleaf and other elements of decorative paper. First of all, this applies to paper with marble drawings (marble paper), found in the Russian book since the 18th century. Modern researchers of Russian binding of the 18th — early 20th centuries face a number of problems related to the lack of literature on the topic, including methodological and reference, the lack of specialized collections and exhibitions of decorative paper in Russia and the lack of development in the domestic book science of the terminology for describing the binding materials. This article substantiates the need to create the nomenclature of drawings and link them to a certain chronological period. The author analyses three main groups of problems: terminological, systematization of marble drawings and their chronological correlation, problems of describing paper as a material. The first group includes different interpretations of term and unclear definition of many terms; phenomena of synonymy and polysemy when using particular names of drawings (patterns). Not only historians of the book, but also librarians, restorers, masters of individual binding, second-hand booksellers and bibliophiles have their own independently formed professional dictionary, which gives place to decorative papers. This inconsistency is reinforced by borrowing French, German and English terms, which, in turn, can also be duplicated. The author notes that systematization of decorative papers with marble drawings can be based on the methods of its colouring, but such a technological approach is not sufficient to describe a specific sample of marble paper. The article shows that various patterns periodically gained and lost popularity, then returned to bookbinding practice, but with a number of characteristic changes and additions. Correct description of the paper in binding is impossible without determining its origin (Russian/foreign), the method of production and colouring (manual/machine) and the specific properties of the material itself. At the same time, there are no methods and schemes for describing decorative paper grades. The article highlights that the development of such method will help to significantly narrow the chronological framework when attributing the binding.

The purpose of this work is to provide seminar needs (seminar kit) as compliments of seminar or symposium held by university including Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU). Method of this activity included launching of our main products, namely eco-print both on paper and on fabric. In this work, eco-print products on recycle papers was used as exclusive block-note covers while eco-print products on fabric were used as tote-bag materials. There were two advantages of using these products, firstly: they were made of natural ingredients without chemical synthetic materials; and secondly the products were designed specifically; one product was not similar with the others. This activity involved two partners, namely a recycle-paper producer and a tailor who make tote-bag. Result on progress of this activity was an order for seminar kit through exhibition. During the evaluation of this project it was found that Nauli Apik USU, as a seminar kit’s producer, still depends on workers whom working manually and having individual skill. In the future, management of production should be improved.

Virtual Reality (VR) and 360 film have caught the attention of audiences and content creators and emerged as a new media, however, the market penetration of VR and head mounted hardware has remained slow despite the availability of more affordable mobile options. This has resulted in some audiences turning to VR cinemas, festivals and out-of-home exhibitions. Creating affordable, scalable VR cinemas presents a number of challenges and many of the decisions taken in both developing and facilitating these curated exhibitions directly impact audience's reception of spatial audio soundtracks. This workshop position paper looks to discuss the potential issues and future solutions in the use of current synchronous exhibition applications, the competing formats, standardised Head Related Transfer Functions, headphone build/colourisation, and the on-boarding process.

[ES] El álbum familiar se entiende como: un libro cuyas páginas vacías están preparadas para albergar las fotografías de los momentos más importantes de la familia que lo posee. Su característica principal es que estas instantáneas tienen la finalidad de narrar los acontecimientos que ocurrían en el núcleo familiar y que acabarían por conformar parte su identidad. Es un objeto que forma parte del legado y suele traspasarse de generación en generación. Por lo que el álbum fotográfico vendría a ser: la historia de vida de las familias en imágenes que relatan y retratan la memoria de un grupo de individuos emparentados. Pero parece ser que en la actualidad el concepto de álbum familiar ha comenzado a transformarse a causa de la postfotografía y la digitalización desencadenando que: la imagen esté perdiendo poder, y ocasionando a su vez un gran descontrol sobre ella. Debido a la masificación y el consumo desmesurado de imágenes nos podríamos encontrar con la situación en la que la fotografía se vería en la necesidad de transformarse, para ir acompasada con los avances digitales y de mediatización. Dicho en otras palabras, se inicia un cambio de paradigma de lo analógico a lo digital sobre el medio que acabaría transformando también el álbum. El álbum, como generador de historias crea la narrativa visual e histórica que vendría relatada por los protagonistas que aparecen en las imágenes, de quienes la relatan con sus cámaras, y en dónde destacaría el papel de la mujer. Pues desde el interés que podría tener la parte femenina de las familias ¿ las madres y abuelas - en reunir a sus miembros y salvaguardar los momentos especiales, sería clave en la creación y la principal responsable de la perduración de este objeto, e incluso en la realización de las propias fotografías. Así pues, la motivación para realizar este trabajo es la de hacer una investigación acerca del álbum familiar, tanto en su nivel práctico como técnico para luego organizar un proyecto expositivo con obras de artistas mujeres contemporáneas que hayan usado el álbum familiar como objeto de inspiración para llevar a cabo su obra. Además de describir las principales transformaciones formales en la composición de la fotografía familiar, estudiando el cambio en la relación y uso de la cámara. La concepción que se tiene del álbum familiar clásica ha podido cambiar a lo largo de los años y esto se podría apreciar en el álbum familiar contemporáneo., [EN] The family album is understood as a book whose empty pages are prepared to house the photographs of the most important moments of the family that owns it. Its main characteristic is that these snapshots are intended to narrate the events that took place in the family nucleus and that would form part of its identity; so that they would later form part of the legacy that is usually passed on from generation to generation. Therefore, the photographic album would be the life story of some families, told and captured in images that narrate and portray the memory, the past events. But it seems that nowadays the concept of the family album has begun to be transformed by post-photography and digitalization which means that the image is losing its power and, in turn, causing a great lack of control over it. Due to the massification and excessive consumption of images, we could find ourselves in a situation in which photography would need to transform itself, in order to keep pace with digital advances and mediatisation. In other words, a paradigm shift from analogue to digital began on the medium that would end up transforming the album as well. The album, as a generator of stories, creates the visual and historical narrative that is told by the protagonists who appear in the images, and by those who narrate it with their cameras. But in all this, it is worth highlighting the role of women. From the interest that the female part of the families could have in bringing together their members and safeguarding special moments, she would be key in the creation, and responsible for the durability of this object. Thus, the motivation for this work is to carry out an investigation into the family album, both on a practical and technical level, in order to then organise an exhibition project with works by contemporary women artists, due to their prominence in relation to this object. In addition to describing the main formal transformations in the composition of family photography, studying the change in the relationship and use of the camera. Considering this hypothesis: digitalisation may have changed the way of production and collection of the family photographic album to scenarios of accessibility, in which women would have a relevant role in this process, which would also be reflected in their position as artists. The album, as a time capsule, or narrative element of family history, acquires meaning with the appearance of its protagonists in front of the camera. The conception of the classical family album may have changed over the years and this could be seen in the contemporary family album.

This paper is the first to use bookwork, a form of spreadable media, to explore and reflect upon the impact of informal sector tourism on indigenous Namibian craft culture. We seek to convey the manner in which “outsiders” (such as tourists) can permanently influence authentic craft processes by observing and purchasing low cost, easily mass-produced, inauthentic brightly colored objects and generating an artistic installation titled Grey Market Tourism to be used as the centerpiece of an academic discussion in this paper on the outsider’s view of the encroachment on authentic Namibian craft and to the broader society in a public art exhibition. Through the use of bookwork as creative output, we raise questions about tourism, the commodification of art, and the meaning of authenticity in craft culture. We also issue a "call to action" regarding greater integration of art practices in business literature through interdisciplinary collaboration and broader recognition of artistic expressions, such as bookwork, as research output.

In current scholarship the obscurity of the early years of Thomas Dekker is akin to his opacity in Philip Henslowe's Diary, which awaits full analytical interpretation. While the Diary usefully tells us about Henslowe's theatre business, it also imparts interwoven stories about many playwrights whose works are being rigorously tested in today's theatres. In this essay Chi-fang Sophia Li offers a theatre-based critique of the early life of Dekker, when, she argues, he quickly became a ‘fully paid-up member’ of the theatrical community. Thus his theatrical strengths, productive potential, writing interests, collaborative patterns, earning power, and working relationships with Michael Drayton, Anthony Munday, and Henry Chettle can be interpreted afresh. The Diary supplies frequent, intensive sightings of Dekker, whose biographical implications mutually inform a cultural life of Dekker's peers. This is the first attempt to elucidate in full Dekker's presence in the Henslowe–Alleyn papers alongside other historical and literary documents. Chi-fang Sophia Li is Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan. She has published in Shakespeare Bulletin, Notes and Queries, English Studies, New Theatre Quarterly, and in Chinese in Review of English and American Literature. She gave public lectures for the anniversaries of Shakespeare's birth and death for the Globe Theatre on tour to Taiwan in 2014 and for the Shakespeare Exhibition in 2015 for the National Museum of Taiwan Literature and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Taking as an example research on cinemagoing in Broadway picture palaces during Jewish holidays and the interpretation of these findings within the larger context of Jewish-American acculturation, this chapter reflects upon digital cinema historiography and the usage of digitized periodicals. Judith Thissen and Paula Eisenstein Baker argue that ephemeral textual traces of film exhibition and audience practices in newspapers, trade journals and fan magazines allow film historians to visualize the historical dynamics of film culture across time and space. Operationalizing a systematic survey of Variety (1905–1940), supplemented by more traditional archival research, this chapter reveals an ethnic practice of cinemagoing that has been long forgotten and also overlooked by film historians.

In the eighteenth century, paper theatres were presented in special boxes on fairs. This technical note describes three ways to present these small decorative art objects in exhibitions: mounting the paper theatres in a box of museum board, between acrylic glass rods or in a frame.

The Kashiwa Library (KL), The University of Tokyo, holds a collection of old paper maps over the world, about a half of which were originally collected for the International Map Exhibition 1980 in Tokyo. The collection has 3,200 maps published in the 1970s and 1980s, and 1,260 of them were displayed at the exhibition. The map collection is important because it represents the cartography at the emerging era of new technologies and techniques such as satellite remote sensing, computers and GIS for map production (Arikawa et al., 2016). These maps were donated from the Japan Cartographers Association in March 2016, after their collection and storage by the association since the exhibition. In the Japanese fiscal year 2017, the Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS), The University of Tokyo, and KL started a cooperative research project to produce a digital archive of this map collection, with support from the University of Tokyo Academic Archives Project that facilitates digital archiving of academic materials owned by various units at the university. This presentation explains the procedure of making our digital archive “Kashiwanoha Paper Maps Digital Archive”. “Kashiwanoha” is the address of the Kashiwa Campus of The University of Tokyo where KL and CSIS are located, and it literally means “oak leaf”.

This paper is a preliminary examination of the paper supports chosen by Jessie Traill (1881–1967) for the intaglio works held by the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). The opportunity arose as works were prepared for the exhibition, Stars in the river, the prints of Jessie Traill, 2013. Traill was innovative in her use of the etching technique at a time when few women artists explored its possibilities. Examination of the 92 prints—from 1907 to 1951—shed light on the papers commercially available at the time, and their influence on the choices Traill made when working in Europe and Australia. Traill printed on a wide range of paper supports, and this research seeks to ascertain whether reasons for paper choice – aesthetic, practical or random – corresponds to the subject matter of her prints over the 50 years of her working career. Artworks on paper include manuscripts, prints, drawings, collages, and paintings on paper. Their preservation requires strict values of microclimate parameters, in particular temperature, humidity, radiation and illumination. Maintenance of these parameters in exhibition spaces and storages is of vital importance for collection integrity. Paper as an art medium is particularly sensitive to these factors. Employment of HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) system is recommended in order to avoid unwanted fluctuations in microclimate conditions. Intelligent control system should be used for data acquisition and activation of HVAC system when needed. In that way, the live span of these sensitive artworks can be extended and preserved for future generations.

In 2012 the Alexander Turnbull Library purchased a large collection of writer/historian James Cowan’s (1870-1943) working papers, adding to an already substantial holding. This descriptive article focuses on the arrangement and description of these papers, and the subsequent curation of the exhibition Borderland: The World of James Cowan, curated by Ariana Tikao. The article discusses the archival principles of provenance and original order in relation to these papers, and also issues surrounding the physical arrangement and the creation of the records. It goes on to delineate the structure of the exhibition, describing key themes of Borderland such as the Ōrākau battle, Cowan’s involvement with film, Pākehā Māori, and Cowan’s connections with Tikao’s own whānau, of Banks Peninsula.

Emma Grey chapter examines John Duncan’s Trees From Germany (2003), an exhibition commissioned by Belfast Exposed Photography to ‘produce a photographic work of Belfast post-conflict on the threshold of progress’. Grey explores how this project builds on Duncan’s previous work documenting the planned redevelopment of Belfast and the idealised visions of its post-conflict future. Grey traces the fault lines of post-conflict Belfast, between the recalcitrant traces of a past that the peace process seeks to eradicate and a future it aspires to achieve. Drawing on Duncan’s images, Grey addresses how the peace process’s consignment of traumatic events to the archive of history and its desire for a ‘fresh start’ is underscored (and undermined) by its reliance on selective forgetting. According to Grey, Trees From Germany—through its unrelenting gaze on the architectural outcomes of the peace process and how the city is being rapidly overwritten—frames post-conflict Belfast to reveal its impact on how people live their lives in a radically changed urban environment.

This study presents a graduate research project as a case study, conducted (by the third author) under a graduate course titled “Responsible Design 2” (RD2) at Yasar University (Izmir, Turkey). It is proposed that organizing a tree-planting festival for/with art and design students as a pilot activity at the beginning of their education. The aim is to create awareness on the paper consumption in a local academic society by design act and activism, and to save trees for students’ future paper consumption during their 4-year education as a part of ecological social movement by an institution. The purpose of this paper is to share this empirical practice-based research to contribute to Socially Responsible Education.This experimented design activism project, conducted through a locally interactive research process by graduate students1 (the first and second author), has become a valuable learning experience for the researchers by implementing simple methods and finding out noteworthy numbers in paper consumption in the closest environment. The process of the research contains, literature review, a survey done among design students and faculty members, observations in the school and an exhibition to inform for this festival and to gather, evaluate responses of students, academics who will be involved in this festival. The question here is the starting point for this research: In what way could design thinking change the habits of nonsocially responsible, non-ecological thinking students in the daily life of today? At the end of the survey, it was found out that one student of this faculty consumes 4 trees for his/her 4-year design education. When The 1st Tree Plantation Festival will be held, 153 individuals of this local academic community will plant 612 trees. In conclusion, a simple ‘awareness act’ (staged tree-planting festival) have potential to spark a mass-change in a long turn, in consequences of chain reaction. How can one best transform a paper-based publication into a living online resource? This is the theme of a project at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Norway, supported by the Arts Council Norway. The National Museum aims to create, publish and maintain an authority list of Norwegian artists, architects, designers and craftsmen. The objective is to ease the digitisation process for other museums, scholars and the public in general and contribute to better data quality in Norwegian online collections. The list will in part be based on the Norsk Kunstnerleksikon (Encyclopaedia of Norwegian Artists in English), published in 1982&ndash, 1986 and subsequently digitised in 2013. With the help of other public collections in Norway, the purpose is to make the new resource as complete as possible and available in both human- and machine-readable formats. Although the original paper publication contains biographical texts as well as lists of exhibitions, education, travels, publications and more, the data in the new authority list will be constrained to a set of core biographical data. It will however carry references to online biographical resources such as Norsk Kunstnerleksikon (NKL), Wikidata, Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) and Virtual International Authority File (VIAF). This article discusses the process of defining the scope of and setting constraints for the list, how to enrich and reconcile existing data, as well as strategies to ensure that other institutions contribute both as content publishers and end users. It will also shed light on issues concerning keeping such a resource updated and maintained.

Research on visitors tends to focus on the behavior of the audience before and after the exhibition, while there is little research on the behavior of audiences in the exhibition. The learning and innovative behavior of visitors at the exhibition also reflects one of the basic functions of the exhibition: communicating and Disseminating information. This paper based on the domestic and international research literature on the knowledge diffusion of exhibitions and uses SEM to the established model of the visitors’ learning and innovative behavior in exhibition. The validity of the path in the model is tested by taking Shenzhen Machinery Exhibition as a case. The results show that visitors have different learning behaviors for suppliers and other visitors, resulting in different learning and innovation effects. In addition, their positions, frequency of visiting exhibitions and forms of their visits also have an impact on their learning behaviors.

The year 1966 demarcated a borderline in the urban design discipline. Three books published that indicated a change of direction: City architecture by Aldo Rossi, The territory of architecture by Vittorio Gregotti and Complexity and contradiction in architecture by Robert Venturi. Aldo Rossi, in contact with Ernesto Nathan Rogers and “Casabella-Continuità”, shifted the attention to the historic, consolidated city, the monument and urban rules of archaeological fabric, while Vittorio Gregotti developed a research trend that founded architecture on geography. Finally, Robert Venturi opened up the architectural project, revealing its relations with media culture and with the contradictions of the consumer society. Critical essays investigated the phase following the second half of the Sixties, at the time when Aldo Rossi began, in 1976, to travel across America, invited by the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies to show his works at a series of exhibitions. His book A Scientific Autobiography, written and developed in America, belonged to this phase, which characterised at an international level by the birth of Paper Architecture (the movement that had placed design at the centre of reflection as the expression of new spatial poetics). The essay aimed to show a change in the paradigm of Rossi’s thought, no longer and solely focusing on past and physical architecture, but unrelentingly entwined with the individual and personal destiny of the Milanese architect. Memory became an active, live field of investigation, as Rafael Moneo maintains on Rossi’s thought, in which an objective vision of architecture no longer counted but one that included the subject and his fragments.

The problem of corrosion evaluation of subsea pipes after many years under water is a real problem for many companies operating in the oil and gas business. The European Union research action in the frame of the new research program Horizon 2020 has developed a project to monitor deep subsea tube with guided wave manipulated by a Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV). The paper summarizes the main points of the program, the experimental tests, the sensitivity of the system. The target is also to prepare a white paper document to present to ISO for a norm draft, as a specific EU request. The project is at its final stage after the satisfactory tests in the laboratories of I&T NARDONI INSTITUTE in Brescia and at Dacon in Oslo. The final test is scheduled on end of February in OSLOFJORD. VERNE has been presented in the most important exhibition as OTC 2019 Houston, OMC Ravenna, AIPND BIENNALE NDT CONFERENCE Milano 2019 EGYSP 2020 Cairo. Oil&Gas companies have expressed great interest for VERNE being an alternative to intelligent PIG Inspection, only possible from the inside of the pipe, while not all pipelines are inspected for different reason from the inside.

The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (KTCVS) was founded in 1968 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2018. The launch of the KTCVS may seem somewhat recent, given that the American Association for Thoracic Surgery was founded in 1917. However, considering the circumstances of the Korean medical community after the Japanese occupation (1910–1945), World War II (1940–1945), and the Korean War (1950–1953), this apparent delay is understandable. Even before the foundation of the KTCVS, the early pioneers of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery promptly adopted medical technologies from more advanced countries such as the United States, and contributed significantly to both cardiac and thoracic surgery despite difficult circumstances. In 2012, before the 50th anniversary of the founding of the KTCVS, members shared the opinion that objective records of the activities of the early pioneers should be identified and preserved, and reacted positively towards the necessity for historians who would preserve such records. With this background, the Historical Records Preservation Committee of the KTCVS (hereinafter, referred to as ‘the Committee’) was launched. The Committee published a white paper on the history of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in 2015 and held an exhibition of the achievements of the pioneers at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the KTCVS. The Committee also published a book entitled “The history of Korean thoracic surgery with photographs: celebrating the 50th anniversary of the society.” The Committee will keep making efforts to find and preserve materials related to activities during the early development of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Korea.

In the Manga Media Course of the Department of Design, Sojo University, we teach manga media as a means of transmitting information. We are actively practicing production that combines manga and design. Introducing the possibilities of manga media, using works as examples at the request of companies and local governments and graduation works.
