The complex urban geology of the historic center of Naples is characterized by the emplacement of products from two adjoining volcanic areas that were reworked by alluvial and coastal processes. To expand the geologic knowledge of this densely populated area, multidisciplinary research was carried out on the recently drilled San Marcellino borehole, as part of a larger borehole collection project. Critical revision of 290 previously drilled sequences, and a complete set of tephrostratigraphic, sedimentologic, and paleoecologic data obtained on the San Marcellino stratigraphy, informed a hydrogeological conceptual model of water circulation and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the city historic center. Both before and after the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff eruption, ca. 15 ka, the landscape was characterized by a marine to transitional paleoenvironment. This signifies a good balance between sea-level rise and volcaniclastic inputs, consisting of both primary and remobilized deposits in an area that is also subject to bradyseismic oscillations. Amongst the primary pyroclastic deposits, the products of an explosive event from Campi Flegrei about 16 ka, with an eastward-directed sustained-column phase, were recognized. Collectively, the multidisciplinary data obtained in this study favor the presence of a double-aquifer conceptual model, characterized by a volcanic and a marine-sedimentary aquifer.

The consequences of landslide events, which are among the most widespread natural hazards worldwide, are relevant in both economic and civil issues. The Italian territory is one of the main representatives. For this reason, the study of landslide-induced damage and its monitoring by remote sensing data are effective tools to improve the knowledge of events and to avoid adverse consequences. The present study focused on the efficiency analysis of the relation between damage classes identified on edifices by field campaigns, and landslide kinematic parameters recorded by InSAR techniques were investigated in two Italian sites. Persistent scatterers (PS) derived from the processing of ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed radar images were considered to analyse the behaviour of buildings to be compared with their rate of displacement. The two study areas were the Colle Lapponi – Piano Ovetta basin, strongly affected by a landslide in Agnone (Molise region, southern Italy), and the southern sector of the Volterra town (Tuscany region, central Italy), extensively affected by soil erosion and mass movements. In order to validate the reliability of the relationship found between the classes of damage affecting the structures and the velocities re-projected along the steepest slope direction, a symmetric matrix was created. As result, a map of the efficiency of the relation between recorded damage and deformation velocities was tested in two different areas. The resulting maps can be useful to better localize the possible area prone to be damaged in case of recorded displacement and consequently for managing the territory and the urban expansion.

Slow-moving landslides are a natural hazard which affects wide areas in the world and often are cause of significant damage to structures and infrastructures. Analysis of landslide evolution and of their interaction with existing man-made structures plays a key role in risk prevention and mitigation activities. To this purpose, a considerable interest towards innovative approaches has grown among the scientific community and land management institutions. In this work, Synthetic Aperture Radar data acquired by C-band and X-band sensors, combined with numerical analyses, have been successfully applied as a tool to detect spatial and temporal landslide-induced effects, in terms of deformations and structural behavior of a building affected by ground instability. Such approach has been applied to Moio della Civitella urban settlement (Salerno province, Italy), whose whole territory is interested by several slow-moving landslides. In detail, performance of a masonry building aggregate and the efficacy of restoration works have been investigated through an integrated assessment of displacement time-series pre- and post-repair intervention, and structural analysis performed with numerical code. Historical DInSAR data have permitted firstly the interpretation of building displacement time-series corresponding to pre- and post-works configurations; subsequently, the analysis of interpolated interferometric products has allowed to define gradient maps of vertical and horizontal displacements and to identify part of aggregate which can suffer a greater susceptibility to damage as a consequence of deformation gradients. Finally, the comparison of satellite and numerical data showed a substantial agreement with local failures and damage surveyed, thus confirming the capability of DInSAR technique to investigate building performance where no in situ displacement measurements were available. On the 4th and 5th of March 2005, about 100 rainfall-induced landslides occurred along volcanic slopes of Camaldoli Hill in Naples, Italy. These started as soil slips in the upper substratum of incoherent and welded volcaniclastic deposits, then evolved downslope according to debris avalanche and debris flow mechanisms. This specific case of slope instability on complex volcaniclastic deposits remains poorly characterized and understood, although similar shallow landsliding phenomena have largely been studied in other peri-volcanic areas of the Campania region underlain by carbonate bedrock. Considering the landslide hazard in this urbanized area, this study focused on quantitatively advancing the understanding of the predisposing factors and hydrological conditions contributing to the initial landslide triggering. Borehole drilling, trial pits, dynamic penetrometer tests, topographic surveys, and infiltration tests were conducted on a slope sector of Camaldoli Hill to develop a geological framework model. Undisturbed soil samples were collected for laboratory testing to further characterize hydraulic and geotechnical properties of the soil units identified. In situ soil pressure head monitoring probes were also installed. A numerical model of two-dimensional variably saturated subsurface water flow was parameterized for the monitored hillslope using field and laboratory data. Based on the observed soil pressure head dynamics, the model was calibrated by adjusting the evapotranspiration parameters. This physically based hydrologic model was combined with an infinite-slope stability analysis to reconstruct the critical unsaturated/saturated conditions leading to slope failure. This coupled hydromechanical numerical model was then used to determine intensity&ndash, duration (I-D) thresholds for landslide initiation over a range of plausible rainfall intensities and topographic slope angles for the region. The proposed approach can be conceived as a practicable method for defining a warning criterion in urbanized areas threatened by rainfall-induced shallow landslides, given the unavailability of a consistent inventory of past landslide events that prevents a rigorous empirical analysis.

A large scale study of landslide processes was undertaken by coupling conventional geomorphological field surveys with aerial photographs along with an advanced Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) analysis of ground instability in north-western Sicily. COSMO-SkyMed satellite images for the period between 2008 and 2011 were processed using the Intermittent Small BAseline Subset (ISBAS) technique, recently developed at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Nottingham. The use of ISBAS allowed the derivation of ground surface displacements across non-urbanized areas, thus overcoming one of the main limitations of conventional interferometric techniques. ISBAS provides ground motion information not only for urban but also for rural, woodland, grassland and agricultural terrains, which cover > 60% of north-western Sicily, thereby improving by 40 times in some cases, the slope instability investigation capabilities of InSAR methods. ISBAS ground motion data enabled the updating of the landslide inventory for the areas of Piana degli Albanesi and Marineo (over 130 km2), which encompass a number of active, dormant and inactive landslides according to the pre-existing landslide inventory maps produced through aerial photo-interpretation and local field checks. An average of ∼ 7000 ISBAS pixels km− 2 allowed the detection of small displacements in regions difficult to access. In particular, 226 landslides – mainly slides, flows and creep and four badlands were identified, comprising a total area of 25.3 km2. When compared to the previous landslide inventory maps, 84 phenomena were confirmed, 67 new events were detected and 79 previously mapped events were re-assessed, modifying their typology, boundary and/or state of activity. Because the InSAR method used here is designed to measure slow rates of velocity and therefore may not detect fast-moving, events such as falls and topples, the results for Piana degli Albanesi and Marineo demonstrate the validity of this method to support land management, underlying the time and cost benefits of a combined approach using traditional monitoring procedures and satellite InSAR methods especially if slow-moving slope movements prevail.

Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) techniques have repeatedly proved to be an effective tool for built environments monitoring in areas affected by geological hazards. This paper describes how the Coherent Pixel Technique (CPT) approach has been successfully applied to assess the response of an unstable slope to the different phases of remedial works following a landslide event. The CPT technique was performed on 59 COSMO-SkyMed images obtained between May 2011 and August 2016 and centred on the Quercianella settlement (a small hamlet of Livorno municipality, Tuscany, Italy), where the reactivation of a dormant shallow slide had occurred in March 2011 and, hereafter, a geotechnical intervention, designed with the aim of mitigating the risks, has been conducted from August 2013, lasting thirteen months. The time series of CPT results show a deformation pattern with sudden accelerations (up to 21 mm in few months) corresponding to the beginning of the interventions, during which the area has been excavated to install a drainage well, followed by mild decelerations resulting from the stabilization of the area after the conclusion of the works. In particular, the integration of ground-based subsurface monitoring (inclinometers and piezometers) and DInSAR superficial data has provided consistent results for landslide characterization and helped defining the state of activity and the areal distribution of the sliding surface. Moreover, the performance of remedial works in the landslide-affected area has been observed, showing stabilization in the upper part of the hamlet and the ongoing movement in the lower part. The combined monitoring system also led the geotechnical company in charge of remedial works to design further stabilization works in order to preserve buildings and roads in the moving area. Therefore, the integration of remote sensing techniques and in situ instruments represents a timely and cost-efficient solution for intervention works monitoring, opening new perspectives on designing engineering solutions for the stabilization of unstable slopes.

This paper presents the results of an investigation on a Deep Seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DSGSD), previously only hypothesized by some authors, affecting Bisaccia, a small town located in Campania region, Italy. The study was conducted through the integration of conventional methods (geological-geomorphological field survey, air-photo interpretation) and an Advanced-Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (A-DInSAR) technique. The DSGSD involves a brittle lithotype (conglomerates of the Ariano Irpino Supersynthem) resting over a Structurally Complex Formation (Varycoloured Clays of Calaggio Formation). At Bisaccia, probably as a consequence of post-cyclic recompression phenomena triggered by reiterated seismic actions, the rigid plate made up of conglomeratic sediments resulted to be split in five portions, showing different rates of displacements, whose deformations are in the order of some centimeter/year, thus inducing severe damage to the urban settlement. A-DInSAR techniques confirmed to be a reliable tool in monitoring slow-moving landslides. In this case 96 ENVIronmental SATellite-Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ENVISAT-ASAR) images, in ascending and descending orbits, have been processed using SUBSOFT software, developed by the Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSLab) group from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The DInSAR results, coupled with field survey, supported the analysis of the instability mechanism and confirmed the historical record of the movements already available for the town.

An integrated system to analyze slope instabilities over vast areas through the intercomparison of measurements obtained by in-situ and persistent scatterer (PS) interferometry processing of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, is here introduced and tentatively named landslide detection integrated system (LaDIS).The persistent scatterer pair (PSP) SAR interferometry technique has been used to process high-resolution SAR images acquired in the 2008–2011 time span by the COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation, available in a 40 km × 40 km study area in the Palermo Province (Sicily region—Italy). Derived displacement rate estimates from COSMO-SkyMedPS measurements have been analyzed in approximately 10% of the study area for landslide research. Within this area, according to the official landslide inventory map, extremely slow to very slow landslides are dominant, being favored by the presence of heterogeneous clay formations characterized by poor mechanical properties. To prove COSMO-SkyMedPS displacement rates an engineering-geological approach was adopted, tailored to allow a continuous and rapid updating of landslide-inventory maps; to this aim a detailed geological field work has been performed. To guarantee an independent assessment, field surveys have been carried out without sharing information derived from PS data. Almost half (49%) of the active unstable areas identified through COSMO-SkyMedPS measurements were confirmed by the field work. In an additional 26% of cases the greater sensitivity of the satellite has allowed to identify movements, even if very slow, that did not show superficial evidence. A confirmation of the great potentialities of the latest generation of satellite systems also comes from the comparison with the current official landslide-inventory map, updated in 2006. Among the 58% of the total PS measurements that have been used to contour the landslides “in remote”, 84.3% falls outside the polygons of the failures detected in the existing maps, which implies a significant percentage of data to be associated to new landslides or extension of pre-existing landslides. Advantages and drawbacks of exploiting COSMO-SkyMed X-band SAR data to study landslides over wide areas through the proposed approach are finally discussed.

Results deriving from an archival and bibliographical research are here presented, concerning the landslides occurred in Naples (Italy) from 1886 to 1996. Mass movements involved the volcaniclastic products cropping out in the urban area, essentially deriving from the Late Quaternary to Holocene explosive activity of the Phlegraean volcanic district. More than 190 landslides were extracted from existing catalogues, archives and scientific publications, and eventually analyzed in detail. Special attention was paid to triggering factors, which resulted to be essentially rainfall and human activity. Finally, those landslides reported in the sources as being induced by rainfall, and occurred between 1951 and 1996, were preliminarily analyzed, with the aim of verifying the reliability of information gathered from the sources.

Landslides are among the most important and frequent natural calamities that cause severe socio-economic and human losses. After earthquakes, landslides are responsible for the greatest number of casualties and the largest amount of damage to man-made structures. On average, southern Italy is affected by a high spatial density of landslides due to its complex geological setting, which often predisposes it to slope instability phenomena under both natural and anthropogenic influences. Structurally complex formations are widespread in the southern Apennines and are characterized by high heterogeneity and very poor mechanical properties. Thus, these formations represent one of the main factors contributing to the predisposition of slopes to landsliding. In this paper, landslide-induced damage was investigated and analyzed in an area within the municipality of Agnone (Molise region), which is affected by a complex landslide that involves a structurally complex formation. The approaches used were based on six different methods that have previously been described in the literature, and a comparison of the results was made. Data regarding the damage, which consists largely of cracks observed in buildings and at the ground, were compiled through field surveys. The results were critically analyzed to note the advantages and constraints of each classification scheme. The aim of the work was to apply and compare different approaches in order to test the best and most accurate procedures for assessing damage due to landslides at the scale of individual buildings as well as to provide an objective assessment of the degree of landslide damage to structures and facilities. Aiming at a deeper comprehension of landslide geological and geotechnical model, territorial monitoring is of utmost importance. The integration of conventional and innovative monitoring techniques allows to obtain the most precise and up-to-date information at reasonable costs. This paper focuses on the case study of Moio della Civitella (Salerno Province, Italy) where, starting from 2007, an integrated monitoring network was implemented to detect the state of activity of some landslides affecting the urban centre.

Two methodologies for landslide susceptibility mapping in a Geographical Information System (GIS) environment are here presented. Camaldoli hill, the most prominent peak of the Phlegrean district (458 m a.s.l.), was selected for the model implementation. To this aim, bi- and multivariate approaches were adopted, considering seven possible factors predisposing to landslide occurrence (geology, slope, aspect, land cover, distance to streams, rocky scarps and distance to roads). The susceptibility maps produced with the two methods were then compared and critically evaluated using validation datasets (Receiver Operating Characteristic - ROC curves).

Subsidence due to groundwater overexploitation has been recognized in the metropolitan area of Murcia (25 km2) in south-eastern Spain since the early 1990s. Previous published works have focused their attention on land subsidence that occurred during the drought period between 1995 and 2008. This work first analyzes the groundwater recovery that has occurred since 2008 and then determines the kind of associated ground deformation detected by the new extensometric data. Subsequently, subsidence time series are computed on 24 geotechnical boreholes scattered throughout the study area by means of a hydro-mechanical finite element code and a linear-elastic constitutive law. A spatio-temporal interpolation of the numerically modeled surface displacements is performed over the whole domain and compared with extensometers and DInSAR-derived displacement maps in two different periods: the drought period from 2004 to 2008, and the recovery period from 2008 to 2012. In spite of the limited information on the geomechanical parameters characterizing the modelled geological formations, the proposed approach is able to discriminate areas where the soils have an elastic behavior (small differences in the comparisons) or an elasto-plastic behavior (large differences in the comparisons). This zonation enhances the understanding of the subsidence phenomenon in Murcia City and could prevent, from a quantitatively point of view, future severe subsidence due to aquifer overexploitation. InfraRed Thermography has been tested herein for the study of the fracturing condition of intensely jointed rock masses, in order to find out what kind of information can be assessed. Although this technique is widely used in several scientific fields, its direct application for rock mechanics purposes is still under development. In this paper, thermal imaging campaigns, carried out in different climatic conditions, are described. A Cooling Rate Index, related to how fractured rock masses behave during the heat transfer towards the external environment, is proposed. Such an index has been related to the degree of fracturing of the rock masses, in order to find a relationship among thermal behavior and the main quantitative fracturing indexes. Results return interesting matches between some geostructural features and thermal outputs, demonstrating the reliability of the application of such methodology to bare rock masses. Moreover, new experimental considerations are proposed, laying the foundations for future studies aimed to further validate the InfraRed Thermography as an effective remote survey technique.

This work presents a Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) analysis of slow-moving landslides in Costa della Gaveta (southern Italy) exploiting the improved spatial density of radar targets provided by the novel Intermittent SBAS (ISBAS) algorithm. Several landslides occurred in this area over the past decade, producing a ground displacement of several centimeters and causing unsafe road and rail traffic conditions. In the 2.4 km2 study area, ISBAS analysis of TerraSAR-X data acquired in 2010–2011 has shown the presence of sixteen phenomena with a southeastern main direction of motion. The DInSAR results agree with both the magnitude and the deformation mechanisms that were mapped during field observations and reported in the geotechnical literature.

Porosity plays a decisive role in decay processes of stones, as the pore network allows the water penetration responsible for the several physical and chemical deterioration processes affecting stone materials. In this paper two stones (with porosity from high to medium) used in Naples and Vicenza architectures have been considered to investigate the effects produced by the application of an ethyl silicate consolidant and an anti-swelling protective agent on pore space and therefore on stone durability. A deep characterization of the pore system has been carried out as considered crucial to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation treatments and their performance through time. To this purpose, petrophysical and physico-mechanical measurements have been carried out before and after aging tests, on both untreated and treated stones. Conservation treatments, strongly affecting pore size distribution and the behavior towards water absorption, do not always improve the durability of stone, especially in Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (herafter NYT) where a set of meso-macropores was totally annealed as well as a relevant portion of ultramacropores. Such treatments favor the persistence of water in NYT rock structure still after a long time, further contributing to a fast decay of this stone after aging tests. By contrast, treatments in Vicenza Stone (hereafter VS) prevailingly occlude micro- and mesopores and only slightly affect larger pores thus again favoring the flow rate during water desorption test. Moreover, the increase of the average pore radii after treatments also improves the features of this stone that accounts for almost negligible effects after accelerated aging tests.

The application of Infrared Thermography is here proposed as a useful tool for the remote survey of intensely jointed rock slopes. Although such a technique is widely used in several scientific fields, its direct application for the evaluation of the degree of fracturing in bare rock masses is still a pioneering methodology. To test and validate its application, two representative rock masses of different lithologies have been chosen in the southern sector of Peloritani Mountains (north-eastern Sicily). Thermal images were taken during three moments of the same day, to study the thermal behavior of the rock under heating and cooling conditions. Results show interesting matches between some geostructural features and thermal outputs, demonstrating the reliability of such a methodology, which can also allow the extension of the survey to portions of the slope that are not directly reachable.

A complex landslide, which mobilized a calcareous rock mass of about 60,000 m3, occurred on January 3, 2002, along the southwestern slope of Mt. Catiello, above Positano (province of Salerno, Italy). According to established classification schemes, such a landslide can be classified as a rock avalanche or as a complex, dry, extremely rapid rock fall—dry, extremely rapid debris flow. Landslides of this type and dimensions are quite rare in the southern Apennines, and even rarer in the Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula. Therefore this one represents a singular case for assessing both the mechanisms leading to such a type of sudden, often hazardous mass movements, and the residual hazard still existing on Mt. Catiello. Due to the inaccessibility of the near-vertical rock slopes, the characterization of the instability mechanisms of the landslide was based on analyses of terrestrial stereoscopic photographs, taken from lateral and frontal positions with respect to the 2002 depletion zone, and on measurements/validations of structural settings carried out in accessible sectors of the mountain. Currently, the southwestern slope of Mt. Catiello, which corresponds to the depletion zone of the 2002 landslide, cannot be considered more unstable than the adjacent northern slope, where a smaller rock mass tower, with a volume of 20,000 m3 and clear signs of a propagating deformation-fracturing process at the base, was identified. Considering this remaining unstable rock tower as a part of the mass movement, the distribution of activity of the landslide can be considered as widening, and its state of activity as suspended.

Integrated geological, geomorphological, and differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) data are used to constrain the timing and modes of activity of Quaternary fault systems in the Hyblean Plateau. This area, which represents a unique natural laboratory for studying surface deformation in relation to deep slab dynamics, has grown since middle Miocene times as a doubly plunging forebulge associated with slab rollback during NW-directed subduction. Bimodal extension has produced two mutually orthogonal normal fault systems. The detailed stratigraphic record provided by synrift sediments and postrift marine terraces allowed us to define the timing of activity of an early Pleistocene, flexure-related fault system, thus constraining the duration of a typical foreland extensional tectonic event to ∼1.5 m.y. Subsequent late Quaternary to present deformation was dominated by strike-slip faulting associated with NW-oriented horizontal compression. During this latest stage, regional uplift progressively increased toward the thrust front to the NW and was accompanied by differential uplift accommodated by dip-slip components of motion along active NNW-trending faults. The general active tectonic setting of the study area, characterized by NW-oriented horizontal compression consistent with major plate convergence, and the regional uplift pattern can both be explained within the framework of intraplate shortening and foreland rebound following complete slab detachment, a major geodynamic event interpreted to have taken place at ca. 0.7 Ma in southern Italy.
