This paper investigates the eastern movements of barley grains and their morphological variations in prehistory. By combining previously published and newly collected archaeobotanical grain measurements (n = 2,176), we explore the roles of culinary traditions underlying the morphological traits observed. We find that barley diminished in size as it moved from its origin in southwestern Asia to Central and East Asia between the third millennium BC and first millennium BC. In particular, the grains in Monsoonal China became greatly reduced in comparison to other regions as the crop was incorporated into eastern small grain cuisines. The reverse pattern is observed in the high-altitude Tibetan environment, which is attributed to the practicalities of cooking under low vapour pressure conditions. These results, demonstrating that barley moved eastward but western grinding and baking traditions did not, reveal the complexity of the eastern culinary system and raise awareness of decoupling of grains and their associated cuisines. Dust storm disasters have emerged as a significant environmental challenge in East Asia. However, relying on a single monitoring method to track dust storms presents limitations and can be variable. Therefore, it is necessary to use a combination of ground and remote sensing monitoring methods to explore the source and impact range of dust storms in order to fully characterize them. To achieve this, we examined the sources and impact ranges of dust storms in East Asia from 1980 to 2020 using both ground station data and remote sensing data. In addition, we focused on three specific dust storm events in the region. Our results indicate that the central source areas of dust storms are located in southern Mongolia and the Taklamakan Desert in China. Dust storms are mainly transported and spread in the northwestern region, while they are relatively rare in the southeastern region. The HYSPLIT model simulations reveal that the primary source directions of dust storms in East Asia are northwest, west, and north, the region involved includes Kazakhstan, southern Mongolia, and the Taklimakan Desert in China. The vertical structure of the dust storm layer depends on the source of the dust storm and the intensity of the dust storm event. Dust grain stratification probably occurs due to differences in dust storm sources, grain size, and regularity. These findings demonstrate that a combination of ground-based and remote sensing monitoring methods is an effective approach to fully characterize dust storms and can provide more comprehensive information for dust storm studies. Peatlands are one of the most significant carbon reservoirs in the terrestrial ecosystem. Understanding past peatland carbon accumulation processes and their responses to varying external and internal forcing factors would help reveal the general development patterns of peatland ecosystems and provide useful insights into projecting the fate of carbon reservoirs into the future. In this paper, the basal ages of 17 peat cores were used to explore the lateral expansion processes of the Laolike peatland, northeast China. Two cores were selected to calculate carbon accumulation rates (CAR) and reconstruct moisture/precipitation records based on δ13C and grain size analyses. The basal ages show that the peatland was initiated at 12.1 cal kyr BP, then laterally expanded with its fastest rate occurring during the early Holocene, and reached its largest area around 6 cal kyr BP. The time-weighted mean CAR in the Laolike peatland ranged from 31.1 to 52.9 g C/m2/yr (with an average of 42 g C/m2/yr) during the Holocene. The peatland experienced a high CAR of 52.5 g C/m2/yr from 11.7 to 5 cal kyr BP, followed by a low CAR of 35.1 g C/m2/yr after 5 cal kyr BP. Both lateral expansion and vertical accretion are consistent with the summer insolation, climate seasonality, and the strength of the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) over multi-millennium timescales, where the CAR correlated well with δ13C and grain size, implying moisture/precipitation might be the primary factors controlling carbon accumulation over millennium timescales. Local conditions, such as topography and hydrology, also played an important role in the process of peatland initiation and lateral expansion, as well as the discrepant CAR within the peatland. This study reveals the roles of climate and local conditions in peatland initiation, expansion, and CAR during the Holocene. Westerlies‐dominated arid central Asia (ACA) has a very fragile ecological environment that highly depends on the available moisture sources. However, the moisture history of this region during the Holocene has been a controversial topic for several decades. Here, we performed optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and grain‐size analysis of aeolian sediments from the eastern Balikun Basin. Our results demonstrated that the early Holocene climate in the Balikun Basin was dry (before ~6.5 ka) and then became wetter during the mid–late Holocene. This Holocene climate pattern correlates well with other climatic inferences from various proxies acquired at various ACA locations, further supporting an earlier view that the Holocene climate in ACA was out of phase with that of the East Asia summer monsoon. Furthermore, an extremely dry event at 4.3–2.6 ka correlated well with pollen records and a decrease of ~4°C in temperature in the western Balikun Lake, but this event was not evident in other ACA regions. Finally, Mingsha Shan Sand Dunes in the eastern Balikun Basin initially accumulated in the earliest Holocene. We suggest that the early Holocene dry climate in the ACA region and the local geomorphology are responsible for the formation of the Mingsha Shan Sand Dunes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the Sino-Korean Craton (SKC) and the Gondwana supercontinent is crucial for accurate reconstruction of the tectonic evolution and early Paleozoic paleogeography of East Asia. To explore the link between the SKC and peri-Gondwana, we provide new detrital zircon U–Pb age data from litho- and bio-stratigraphically constrained lower Cambrian to Lower Ordovician sandstone deposits from the eastern margin of the SKC (Taebaeksan Basin). Results indicate that the two distinct age spectra of detrital zircon resulted from provenance change combined with a strong function of sediment grain size within host siliciclastic rocks of the Taebaek Group. The age spectra from coarse-grained sandstones display Paleoproterozoic (1.9 Ga) and Neoarchean (~ 2.5 Ga) peaks, indicating that the sediments were supplied from the basement rocks of the SKC. Conversely, age spectra from fine-grained siliciclastics contain late Mesoproterozoic (~ 1.0 Ga) and Neoproterozoic (~ 0.6 Ga) peaks, with or without a Paleoproterozoic signal, consistent with a Gondwanan sediment origin. These different age populations have been documented in multiple Cambrian and Ordovician sequences of the SKC and are consistently well correlated with sediment grain size. Coarse-grained sediments, sourced primarily from local basement rocks, were deposited in coastal, nearshore, and shelf environments, whereas fine-grained sediments were derived from more distal sources (i.e., the Gondwana mainland and/or the Gyeonggi Marginal Belt) and deposited in inner to outer shelf settings. Therefore, the repeated occurrence of sediment with two distinct provenances in the Cambrian–Ordovician siliciclastics of the SKC is likely a result of provenance shift integrated with changing depositional environments in an epeiric platform. This yielded variations in sediment grain size and source rock provenance, with and/or without a tectonic activity.
