The Indo-Pacific region is believed to be of immense strategic significance given the dynamism of the region in propelling economic growth and cooperation between nations. However, the region has attracted significant attention from major powers and is being reimagined as a contested geo-political space. The emergence of the term has led to a restructuring of the popular perception in which the world has traditionally and strategically perceived this geographical area. This paper delves into the manner in which the India and Australia as important actors in the region conceptualize the 'Indo-Pacific' and how it has shaped India-Australia relations. Thus, India as a developing country can be no exception to this universal truth. It is not possible to bring out the facts regarding first time when India engaged in trade with some nation, but it traded with different nations in the times when some of the countries were still groping in darkness to find means of livelihood for their folks. India traded with almost every nation and dealt in the products of rare quality and rarest origin. In modern times, India also has trade relations with many nations and deals in a number of commodities. The literature on South–South Development Cooperation (ssdc) has grown exponentially in the past few years. One focus of analysis has been how domestic institutions and agendas shape the approaches to development cooperation of different Southern partners. However, few analysts to date have commented on how the ‘ordinary’ general public of these countries might perceive or assess their country’s role in international development. Through a study based on interviews and media analysis, this paper attempts to tease out the slim evidence currently available on ‘public’ attitudes in India, concentrating, for reasons explained, exclusively on elites and ‘middle classes’. It argues that, while some domestic criticism will certainly accompany the growing visibility of Indian development cooperation, the attractive blend of discursive positioning and material benefits may provide the Indian government with broad support for its growing investment and profile in international development, or at least offset a degree of criticism. At present there appears to be little public discussion about whether and how India’s external role relates to domestic poverty, or the nature of growth and ‘development’ that India is helping to stimulate in partner countries. This paper examines the emerging patterns and economic implications of Indian overseas direct investment (ODI) from a historical perspective. The novelty of the analysis lies in its specific focus on the implications of the liberalization reforms initiated in the early 1990s and the resultant changes in the overall investment climate for the internationalisation of domestic companies. The findings cast doubts on the popular perception that the recent surge in ODI from India is an unmixed economic blessing, a sign of "coming of age" of Indian companies in global business. Given the remaining distortion in the domestic investment climate, the net national gains from these investments could be much less than what the reported absolute numbers suggest. Cross‐border dispersion of different stages/slices of the production processes within vertically integrated global industries ("global production sharing") has been a key structural change in the global economy in recent decades. This paper examines India's experience with exploiting opportunities created by this phenomenon for export expansion from a comparative East Asian perspective. The analysis reveals that India has so far failed fitting into global production networks in electronics and electrical goods, which have been the prime movers of export dynamism in China and the other high‐performing East Asian countries. The findings of this study provide further support to the case for completing the unfinished reform agenda, encompassing both trade and investment policy reforms, and "behind‐the‐border" reforms. There is also a strong case, based on the experiences in East Asia and elsewhere, for combining further reforms with a proactive investment promotion campaign to attract multinational enterprises engaged in global production networks. This paper discusses Indo-Soviet economic relations as one aspect of international relations between the empire Soviet Union and the nation-state India. The discussion goes beyond classic Cold War interpretations. The paper analyzes complex interrelations and contradictions of Cold War, Decolonization, and global economic conditions. The analysis shows that Soviet expectations tended to overlook socialist-capitalist interdependencies as well as the decisive influence of Indian aims and activities. Nehru's so-called socialistic pattern of society did not replicate the Soviet model. Moscow expected the economic cooperation to propel socialist developments in India. At the same time, it should provide the socialist world with necessary support for its competition with the West. These different aims and motivations led to lasting contradictions and incompatibilities in economic relations. The paper focuses on central characteristics of Soviet approaches. This article provides an overview of Latvian-Indian economic relations in the interwar period. Latvians had knowledge of India at least since the middle of the 19th century, mainly through missionary reports and translations from English newspapers. For most Indians however, Latvia was terra incognita until the late 20th century. In the interwar period economic relations between Latvia and British India were mainly confined to foreign trade. Although Latvia declared its independence in 1918, trade with British India did not commence until 1924. It ended with the outbreak of WWII in 1939. Latvia's foreign trade in relation to British India was more or less regulated by Latvia's 1923 treaty with Great Britain, as well as the 1934 Commercial Agreement between the Government of Latvia and His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, which had an Article that allowed for the continuation of previous arrangements under the previous treaty. Latvia's main imports from India in the interwar period were furs and hides, rice, coffee and tea, jute and cotton, nuts and seeds, spices and condiments, whilst Latvia's main exports to India were plywood, timber and timber products, paper and paper products, and lubricating oils. In general, despite a growth in trade in the late 1930s, trade and thus economic relations were of marginal significance to both countries in the interwar period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

India's connections with Southeast Asia are rooted in history in terms of geography, civilization, culture, economy and strategy. These connections became deeper since the 1990s as India initiated the policy of 'Look East' that resulted in manifold growth with ASEAN and Singapore. The initiation of 'Look East Policy' opened the door for Singaporean Indians for investments and interaction with their motherland. Through the 'Look East Policy' the distance between India and ASEAN ended and India was connected with this region and especially Singapore through trade relations. With this policy, India was able to enter this region and this was the chance for the Indian people to revitalize and energize their social and cultural bonds with their motherland (Pande 2017). These relations were further intensified after 2014 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched 'Act East Policy'. While 'Look East Policy' was launched by India in the backdrop of the critical economic situation, the 'Act East Policy' is aimed at strengthening our relations in terms of cultural, political and strategic dimensions. Therefore, this paper aims to study and analyse the role of the Indian diaspora as a soft power for making strong bilateral bonds between India and Singapore with special reference to the political and economic scenario. The mushrooming growth in regional trading arrangements from 50 in the 1990s to 585 till June 15, 2014, with 379 in force, constituting nearly 60% of the world trade in the era of multilateralism, has triggered interest in the rationale behind these arrangements. This paper makes an attempt to critically judge the multilateral trading system as well as regional trading arrangements from the developing countries' perspective. This paper explores the relative regional positions of China and India from a geo-economic perspective. The findings of this paper give rise to two important observations. First, the core economic factors driving trade partnerships appear to be, by and large, in the import rather than in the export domain. This suggests that import activities of China from the region depend more on the characteristics of the East Asian partners than export does. In contrast, the core economic factors, such as combined market size and FDI stocks, coupled with similar demand patterns and different factor intensities, are important for generating exports from India to East Asia. Second, though China and India have regional roles as demanders (importer) and suppliers (exporter) of merchandise goods, the differences in the relative positions of the two countries stand out from the supplier perspective. China appears to exert a much larger role as a supplier relative to India to fuel economic interdependence in East Asia. Taken together, these findings suggest that there is still a lack of regional polarization given China's extra-regional bias from the export side. This study examines the impact of domestic and foreign shocks on the real and financial sector of BRIC countries. For this purpose, we use a structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model over the extended period of 1997 to 2016. We conclude that domestic policy shocks have a more substantial impact on Brazilian, Indian, and Russian economy than foreign shocks, while foreign shocks have more contribution in the case of China. Interestingly, results show the negative impact of policy shocks on bank credit provided, implying its role in multiplying the impact of shocks on real variables. Surprisingly EPU of USA has a positive impact on stock markets of India and China, implying capital flight phenomenon, where investor transfer investment from risky to safer places. India is the fastest growing economy with a democratic political system. She is worlds leader in Information Technology Industry. It has annual turnover of $154 billion and employs about 19 million people. It was expected to become a US $225 billion industry by 2020. But, this target is to be reviewed in the light of visa restrictions and control over outsourcing announced by the US President Donald Trump. India's software services sector is bracing for the consequences of new US President Donald Trump action against outsourcing of jobs. Trump has signed an order to block entry of people, including highly qualified professionals, from seven Muslim-majority nations. In the present paper researcher has tried to study impact trump's policy on Indian IT industry through survey of IT Student, IT Faculty and IT Professional. First part of paper covers Indian IT industry scenario and challenges due to trump's policy based on various secondary data and second part of paper is based on primary research conducted through structured questionnaire from various respondent. The paper stands on the premise that interstate acrimony following jingoistic nationalism has turned India, Pakistan and Afghanistan into mutual enemies, who continue to subordinate their national developmental policies to the security complexes, which has exacerbated their mutual hatred to the point beyond repair. It also presents a testable preposition that such a predicament can be countered by globalization optimism, to which interstate cooperation, soft borders and contacts between people are the prerequisites. Such objectives can be realized only through regional and economic integration, whose concept and implementation have worked successfully in Europe and have been extensively debated by many theorists from security, economic, scientific and cultural perspectives. The South Asian countries formed the regional trade bloc namely South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) with the aim to promote regional economic cooperation through multilateral engagements. India which comes to be the largest economy in the SAARC has posted impressive economic growth in the last decades. As of now India stands major contributor to the exports and imports to/from South Asia, having trade surplus with all other countries from the region. In this backdrop, this paper presents the facts on India's role in the economic development of South Asia region while testing the potential spillovers of India's trade and economic growth. We utilize Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bound test procedure for short and long run causal relations during the period 1990–2016, hence raising the quality of statistical inference. The results highlight that the economic growth and regional trade of India are found significant short and long run spillovers on the economic growth of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. The results are highly insightful for policy implication which raises the attention towards the greater degree of trade openness for balanced economic development in the region. Global health organizations focused on nutrition have developed an intense focus on the first 1000-days of human life (from the point of conception to age 2) as the time where the right nutrition and care will determine personal health and global economic futures. Based on epidemiology and lab-based bioscience, this has led to a global policy consensus that promotes a set of 'essential interventions' focused on the bodies of mother to ensure productive global futures. Building on scholars arguments that 1000-days consensus is predicated on a logic of anticipatory action, this paper uses the two distinct orientations of the concept of contingency to understand both how this narrative has achieved global prominence, and how it has manifested in particular configurations within India. First, this paper investigates how the 1000-days discourse's ascendance has been achieved through the notion of future life as open-ended contingency. It argues that this specter of future/threat opportunity is then rendered governable through the use of affective practices that quantitatively imagine dystopic global futures of malnourished bodies and stagnant economies, and then makes hope-based appeals to biomedical, nutrition interventions to secure continued economic growth. Second, the paper analyzes qualitative data from Indian policy actors that demonstrates how the 1000-days discourse is refracted across India. I find that Indian responses to such a consensus have been mixed due to the particular socio-political legacies of India as a postcolonial space, and also to a certain level of happenstance and the socio-spatial intermingling of everyday life. This paper's main argument is that while the threat/opportunity of future contingency discursively drives 1000-days, it is simultaneously geographical contingency that complicates the ways it materializes in the particular space of India. • Decoupling of GDP from all energy sources under multiple principles are examined. • World economy achieved weak energy decoupling in most years during 2000–2011. • World economy coupled with coal use and tended to couple with cleaner energy use. • None of studied economies achieved long-term GDP-embodied energy decoupling. • Decoupling delusions occurred when only considering direct and total energy use. Decoupling indicators are widely used to understand links between economic growth and energy use. However, traditional decoupling analyses mostly focus on domestic energy consumption (i.e., the production-based principle) and neglect off-site energy use across global supply chains to satisfy an economy's final consumption (i.e., the consumption-based principle). Moreover, analyses for total primary energy conceal an economy's preference for different energy sources. Therefore, this paper evaluates decoupling states of GDP from all types of primary energy use under consumption-based principle, for world economy and eight typical economies during 2000–2011. Regarding total primary energy, world economy witnessed weak decoupling in most years, and most economies studied (e.g., USA, Japan and China) achieved decoupling initially but performed negative decoupling finally. For EU, USA, Japan, Russia and India, production-based decoupling performances were generally better than consumption-based ones. Decoupling phenomena detected under production-based principle even became coupling or negative decoupling under consumption-based principle in some cases. As for each energy source, world economy decoupled from oil use, but still coupled with coal use, and gradually showed a trend to couple with natural gas and renewables use. Different energy sources showed distinct decoupling degrees from GDP, affected by individual embodied energy requirement structure. Infrastructure helps in building productive capacity by bridging connectivity gaps, reducing distribution and trade costs, and facilitating the sharing of the benefits of growth with poorer groups and communities, among others. The evidence in this paper suggests the need for India to develop both hard as well as soft infrastructure for enhancing trade flows and growth. The decline in India's exports has made our current account deficit position precarious due to the slowdown in the economy of conventional export market like North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) nations and European Union (EU). This paper attempts to explore the emerging economy and unconventional market of Argentina for boosting Indian exports. China has superseded USA in Latin American market by providing and supplying price competitive goods and adopting modern marketing strategies. India's low value-added products, unable to make their place in developed countries' economies, can comfortably be absorbed in Argentina. The paper examines emerging prospects for Russia–India cooperation. While the two countries can collaborate in various areas of mutual interest, the paper identifies possible challenges and effects on the cooperation in the Arctic region. The sanctions imposed by the West could impede Russian energy projects in the Arctic. This could force the state to find a way to replace Western technologies through enhancing capacities of national industry and developing cooperation with other states, including Asian countries. This shift is also bolstered by the political interest to strengthen the position of Russia in the Asian region as a whole, and to increase the country's energy security. Foreign trade plays a very significant role in the economic, social, political and cultural life of nations. Foreign trade is the way of economic development for every country especially for developing countries. Regional cooperation philosophy brought these efforts jointly by a group of countries of particular regions. All countries including India started to walk on the same path for the development of all corners in a cohesive and cooperative manner and India shook its hand for such cooperation with various trade blocs like ASEAN. This paper attempts to portray the picture of such cooperation and relationsof India with ASEAN countries for trade development. RESEARCH TYPE AND METHODOLOGY: The manuscript of the study is empirical in nature. In this paper exploratory research techniques have been used. For the purpose of the study, Secondary Sources of data have been collected through various published literature; Journal Articles, Newspapers, Books and Websites etc. The major sources of secondary data have been the online database of Ministry of Commerce and other publications of Government of India as various issues of Handbook of Indian Statistics, ASEAN Statistical Year Book and Economic Survey. Data have been properly classified and statistically analyzed with the appropriate tools such as Mean, Percentage Change, Correlation, Compound Annual Growth Rate and Time Series Analysis etc. RESEARCH FINDINGS AND INSIGHT: The study reveals that India's trade with ASEAN has prominent place. India's exports and imports have increased smoothly with varying rates of growth and the future estimation about the trade explains that India needs to concentrate more on expansion of exports especially with newly added nations of ASEAN because India's largest trade destinations are few among the founder member states of ASEAN under the period of study. IMPLICATION: The findings of the study suggested that India has to be more attentive and concerned on the trade expansion with ASEAN countries and specifically with newly added ASEAN countries. Since the 1990s, India and Myanmar have sought rapprochement through geo-economic strategies and discourses. The results, however, have been largely underwhelming. This paper offers an explanation for why this has been the case. We argue that the two geo-economic strategies deployed—sub-regionalism and diaspora-driven trade and investment—require the emergence of particular types of deterritorialised and denationalised citizenship regimes which facilitate the mobilisation of provincial capital and diasporic capital. The development of such social forces in India and Myanmar have been stifled by the persistence of older 'regimes of citizenship' associated with geopolitical strategies based on territoriality and pre-existing social hierarchies. In Myanmar, the emphasis on ‘Bamar' identity has led to a hierarchical citizenship regime which marginalises people of Indian origin. While deterritorialised forms of citizenship have emerged in India as the government seeks to harness the economic power of the Indian diaspora, the target of its policies has been the more socially privileged diaspora settled in the West. Moreover, India's Northeast has long been constructed as being culturally distinct and prone to ‘disloyalty' which hinders sub-regionalism. Hence, transforming the relationship requires not just greater political will or technocratic policy changes, but addressing the long-held national anxieties and social hierarchies which underpin India and Myanmar's regimes of citizenship. International cooperation and collaborations played an important role in the economic and educational development of several countries. In the 1950s and 1960s external aid was an important modality to establish cooperation between countries, especially between developing and developed countries. Cross-border activities in higher education used to take place mostly through cooperation projects and academic exchange programmes. The political returns to aid declined during the post-cold war period. Therefore, incentives to extend aid declined and markets and trade became more accepted modes of cooperation and collaboration in all sectors including education. International collaborations of today are very often motivated by economic incentives and are mediated through markets. The franchising and twinning arrangements, establishment of branch campuses, and promotion of cross-border student mobility are examples of market-based collaborative efforts in higher education. This paper discusses Indian cooperation and collaborations with foreign institutions focusing also on such efforts among the BRICS countries. It argues that the collaboration efforts among the BRICS countries may be more influenced by government-to-government efforts than mediated by markets. The paper shows that the BRICS countries at present are more engaged in cooperation and collaborations in higher education with developed countries. Collaborations among the BRICS countries are rather limited and are still at the nascent stages. Therefore, government initiatives and public action are needed at this stage to promote cooperation and expand collaboration in higher education among BRICS countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's scenario, there are umpteen numbers of conflicting issues in the whole economic system of the world economy, which create chaos in the system.This paper explains the concept of "Political Economy" and "Political Governance". It talks about role of political governance and the interface between political governance & conflict. The gist of the paper is about using Democratic Governance in preventing and resolving the conflict. The paper also focuses on the role of Political Governance in the country, the concept of Good Governance and the process of implementing Democratic Governance Programming. Experiences from many parts of the world tell us that human development is often destroyed or delayed by armed conflict. When violence erupts, its destructiveness spreads across actors, structures and processes involved in governance, all of which takes a heavy toll on the local population. Societies in the midst of, or emerging from, armed conflict experience a great number of simultaneous challenges, like high insecurity, weak state legitimacy, polarization along identity lines, social distrust and enmity. This also makes it difficult or impossible to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. We know that in these environments, democratic governance is crucial in overcoming the hurdles hindering peaceful and sustainable development. By promoting inclusive participationof all members of society, including disadvantaged and marginalized groups, and by helping tobuild up responsive governing institutions and respect for human rights, it is possible to mitigate conflict and promote peace. The paper empirically examines the trade led growth paradigm for India with respect to SAARC countries for the period 1990-2014. The paper uses the co-integration model to test the causal relationship between trade and output growth. Granger causality test is applied for the period 1994-2015 to examine the nature of relationship between variables under study. The results indicate absence of long term relationship between India's GDP growth and trade among SAARC nations, thereby giving way to the existence of short term relationship. Granger causality revealed unidirectional nature of causality from exports to GDP and Imports to GDP for Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, GDP to export for Maldives, GDP to import for Bangladesh, Import to export for Bhutan and Sri Lanka and export to import for Pakistan. Recent years have witnessed a rise in conflict between WTO members over the use of state subsidies designed to promote the renewable energy sector. Government subsidies are seen by domestic polic-ymakers as a key catalyst in attracting foreign investment, building capacity, and meeting other domestic policy goals. However, subsidies and other state incentivization programmes often carry trade-distorting effects. This paper examines the current state of WTO law and jurisprudence on subsidies extended to achieve environmental goals, in particular the Canada-Renewable Energy/Feed-in Tariff case and the more recent India-Solar Cells case which higlights the localization problem in the renewable energy sector. The case outcome shows that the WTO continues to maintain the status quo by prioritizing free trade over environmental considerations. The growth trajectory of the economic development of a country depends to a large extent upon the success of its foreign trade policy. Having a favorable or minimize the unfavorable trade balance is a daunting task for the Indian economy which at present is suffering from negative trade balance. However, this objective of a country's foreign trade policy can be achieved only by undertaking suitable efforts to accelerate the volume of exports while shrinking the unnecessary imports to the maximum possible extent. This study is of immense use for policy planners to get a trade snapshot of India for identifying the role of export and import growth in generating the favorable status of India's trade balance. Assistance to India from Japan under its Official Development Aid (ODA) programme has been particularly important for infrastructure development. India has been the single largest recipient of Japanese ODA since 2003–2004. Most of it has been directed towards long-term participation in infrastructure, much of which comes from the enormous demand. With the Indian Prime Minister’s visit on 3 August 2014, Japan committed to invest $35 billion in different sectors focusing on infrastructure in the coming five years. This investment will boost India’s infrastructure sector. Poor infrastructure is a constraint to sustaining India’s high and inclusive growth rate. One major bottleneck in infrastructure development is infrastructure financing (along with many others, such as land acquisition, environment clearance, and cost-time overruns). In this context, the paper explores the impact of Japanese ODA on the infrastructure sector in India, the trends and priority sectors for Japanese ODA, and the problems and challenges of this developing relationship. This paper contributes to the literature on Chinese and Indian multinationals investing in Europe through an empirical investigation about their identity, their characteristics and the association between their features and their international strategies. The investigation exploits a database, named EMENDATA (Emerging Multinationals’ Events and Networks DATAbase), at the level of the investing firms. In relation to the mode of entry, we find that greenfield investments are a more likely option for large-sized companies. Moreover a high propensity for innovation is associated with a high probability to enter with an acquisition and with technological asset-seeking investments. India passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999 in compliance with the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) Agreement under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreements which concluded in 1995. Article 22 of the TRIPs Agreement defines Geographical Indication as 'the indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a Member, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin'. Many developing countries like India has enacted legislation for greater and stronger protection of GI in order to uplift the economic condition of the poor people those who contribute to many key products of export. Since the Act has been passed 15 years back and India registered its first GI, Darjeeling tea in 2004, the total registrations now have reached to 227 in number. The present paper re-examines the challenges ahead in implementation of the Act and to suggest further amendments to the Act for better protection to Indian indigenous knowledge and reputation of products originating from India. It also tries to identify what is further required to reap the benefits of registration and problematic areas like who can be a right applicant of a GI application, Part-B registration of beneficiaries, marketing of GI products, maintaining quality of the product and counterfeiting and enforcement mechanism. A significant feature of globalisation is the advent of Chinese and Indian firms as overseas investors. Investments by these two countries though not large in volume have grown apace and given a new lease of life to writings on foreign direct investment. Most of these studies including the statistical studies on the determinants of these investments replicate the conclusions of studies on foreign investment in general. Although not large in volume investments of Chinese and Indian firms in natural resource extraction industries, including oil in African countries, have reignited the controversies on the contribution of foreign investment to development. This paper reviews the contribution of these studies and argues that a fresh perspective is required to analyse both the determinants and impact of foreign investment by China and India on the host economies. Their contribution to the development of the African countries may be much more substantial than that of investments by the developed countries mostly because of their experience and awareness of development issues. India and China are the two largest countries in the world in terms of population; they are also the fastest growing economies in the world. India and China jointly are home to the world's largest pools of skilful human resources, and there is a general accord that these two countries will continue to be the devices of global economic growth in the 21st century. Increasing bilateral trade has come to be the strongest pillar of China-India rapprochement. In the past 61 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China-India relations have summoned all challenges and made impressive growth. Although there were some border and some other economic issues between India and China in 1960s but both the Countries reignite its bilateral and economic ties during 1980s till date. Booming trade relations between India and China are of more recent origin, more or less coinciding with the onset of contented levels of economic development in both the countries. The trade relations between India and China are analysed by some of the economic indicators i.e. (GDP, Imports and Exports). The GDP of India and China is analysed from 1991 to 2013. The data clearly signifies that the growth of GDP of China is much higher than that of India. The second economic indicator i.e imports and exports is also analysed in this paper. Different statistical tools like Mean, coefficient of variation and kearl pearson's coefficient of correlation have been used for analysing the growth and consistency of imports and exports. The China-India bilateral relationship has always been influenced by three Ts: Territory, Tibet, and Trade. Although the political relationship due to border dispute and Tibet has been on the edge, the trading relationship between China and India has been moving forward steady. As the political relationship between China and India is becoming more strong and strategic, it is most likely that China and India to drive their economic relationship at higher level. In that respect, an Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and India is inevitable. The benefits of FTA such as free flow of goods, services, investments, technology, capital which can be beneficial for the development, stability, and growth of the countries as well as the region can be locked in by adopting a dispute settlement system with fair and efficient procedures and practices. Moreover, an inefficient dispute settlement mechanism can be an effective non-tariff trade barrier. In other words, it might be accurate to say that dispute settlement mechanisms which are inefficient and ineffective actually block trade. Therefore, the FTA between China and India, in addition to liberalization of economy and reducing the tariff; it should also contain a comprehensive rules of dispute settlement which is practical, efficient and effective. In the backdrop of India's jobless economic growth since the macroeconomic reforms of the 1990's, this study goes into the inter-relations among growth of productivity, employment and trade. Most of the studies on productivity in Indian manufacturing indicate a surge in the post reforms period though the individual manufacturing groups achieve varying growth. In the recent period, TFP growth in the sector is attributed to technology-based intermediate imports. Changing patterns of trade, especially export composition, have contributed to low employment generation. Growth in productivity and lack of growth in employment are thus explained by changing composition of trade. This paper starts by defining alternative measures of labor productivity growth, namely 'industry' labor productivity and 'system' labor productivity drawing on World Input-Output Database (WIOD). KLEMS database for India is also used for employment data. The time period for the study is from 1995 to 2014. Trend growth rates are estimated for alternative productivity measures, employment and output. The growth estimates show rapid productivity growth while the rates vary according to the labor intensity in production. It is found that productivity growth, particularly in labor intensive sectors, has been slow. India's share in world trade has been low and rising slowly. Additionally, the share in world trade of leather and textiles is very small. The composition of trade in India is biased towards the manufacturing sector as a whole while the labor-intensive sectors are neglected. Another emerging pattern of India's trade is escalating import of intermediate inputs. To establish the nexus between trade and productivity growth, a vertical specialization index has been estimated by using Hummel's formulation. The estimated result from panel regression with fixed effects establishes positive nexus between vertical specialization and productivity growth. It is argued that India needs to circumvent jobless growth by a balanced approach to job creation and productivity growth. A conscious policy of vertical specialization in products that draw on the country's vast reserve of un-skilled and semiskilled labor can go a long way in this direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It gives an analysis of 37 articles published in Dawn newspaper regarding bilateral trade ties between India and Pakistan over the period of 2 years i.e. june 2011 to June 2013. This study is an overview of Dawn newspaper perspective regarding the changing ties between two nations on the basis of increasing interaction in business sector. Further, the nature of relationship is explained with help of revealed themes and characterization of the words and grammar features. As an introduction to the special issue, this essay covers a range of topics – from Mazrui's historic essay on Gandhi and Nehru to Rumi and Wordsworth's universal optimism and the role of education and technology in globalization. Since Afghanistan is strategically crucial for India, a strong and vibrant economic relationship with Afghanistan is, therefore, of critical value and relevance for India. In view of India's relations with its close neighbour Pakistan, Afghanistan attaches further significance for India. Afghanistan is blessed with enormous resources and because of its geographical position will become an energy corridor (for TAPI gas pipeline) in the future that would be of considerable importance to India. As a growing and large economy, India needs more energy resources to sustain her high economic growth. In the prevailing scenario, India as the largest and important nation of South Asia, occupying a major expanse of territory with extensive resources and potential, require and sought to increase its commerce and friendship ties with Afghanistan. As a war torn economy, Afghanistan wanted India to establish extensive cooperation in energy, education, agriculture, infrastructure, security, banking, trade and commerce. Besides, Afghanistan is a bridge connecting South Asia with Central Asia, Middle East and beyond. In this paper, basic and augmented gravity model has been applied to estimate India's trade potential with Central Asian States. Panel data for the period 2000-2012 is employed in the analysis. The coefficients obtained from the gravity equations are then used to predict trade potentials between the regions. Results reveal that India's trade potential is tremendous with this region, and currently there are few geo-political issues that hinder the pathways of trade between the two regions. Specifically, the political tensions in neighbouring countries, particularly Pakistan and Afghanistan, are the major hindrances. In this context, therefore, both regions should look at ways and means to further improve their trade relations. Revival of historical and cultural links between India and Central Asian republics may prove positive in boosting bilateral trade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author explores the European Union's (EU) strategic partnerships with China and India. Topics discussed include the objectives of EU under its strategic partnership with China in 2003, the importance of the timing of the EU-China partnership, the trade and investment agreement between EU and India, an increase in Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) to Europe since 2008 and China and India's bilateral relations with individual member states of the EU.

• We model CO 2 source-sink matching for decarbonizing India's electricity. • Domestic and Middle East CO 2 storage sites are explored for optimized matching. • International matching with enhanced oil recovery enhances economic feasibility. • CO 2 shipping could expand the potential of CCUS in India's climate mitigation. India is the third largest CO 2 emitter in the world and the ascending trend has not shown clear signs of leveling off. Electricity generation is the most important contributing sector. This paper examines the role of CO 2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in decarbonizing India's electricity. We build a source-sink matching optimization model and unlike previous research, include transport by ship to overseas CO 2 storage sites. We initialize the model with open-source data on power sector emissions and sinks to work out the least-cost solutions for achieving various CO 2 matching scenarios. CO 2 can be captured in fossil-fuel-fired power plants in India, while the utilization and storage could be either within or beyond the country's border. We assess the potential chain of shipping CO 2 to the Middle East for enhanced oil recovery and CO 2 storage. The economics of such international CCUS chains may affect the role of CCUS in India's decarbonization scenarios. We provide first order estimates of costs and conditions to make such a proposition attractive.
