Aim: This study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of sexual violence among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) in Hong Kong. Design: The study adopted a qualitative descriptive design with thematic analysis. Methods: Thirty‐one Chinese MSM were recruited in Hong Kong from May to June 2019 using purposive sampling. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with the participants. The interview data were transcribed verbatim from the recordings and analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach. Results: Four themes were identified: (1) different forms of sexual violence, from physical to virtual; (2) inner struggles with fears and worry; (3) low awareness and perceived risk of sexual violence – 'it has nothing to do with me' and (4) dilemma towards sexual violence prevention. Conclusion: The study provided qualitative evidence regarding the experiences and perceptions of sexual violence among Chinese MSM in Hong Kong. Physical and image‐based forms of sexual violence were identified, which led the participants to experience psychological distress, fear of contracting human immunodeficiency virus/other sexually transmitted infections, notoriety within the gay community, and discrimination and stigmatization within their family and workplace. To reduce the risk of sexual violence, some participants were cautious about the venue in which they engaged in sex and the habit of sharing sexually explicit photos with others. However, some participants had low awareness and perceived risk of sexual violence. Impacts: This study was the first to fill the research gap on sexual violence issues among Chinese MSM using dating apps in Hong Kong. The qualitative findings enhanced the scholarly understanding of Chinese MSM's perceptions and experiences of sexual violence. The study findings can help nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to develop tailored primary, secondary and tertiary sexual violence prevention programmes for MSM or beyond. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic condition that results in not only physical deterioration but also a spectrum of psychosocial outcomes that demand continuous adjustment and coping. Previous qualitative research into the illness experiences has been conducted mainly in Western populations, yet little is known about Chinese PD patients' adjustment. The aims of this qualitative description study were to (a) understand the illness and adjustment experiences, (b) explore the reasons for psychological distress and (c) discern the adjustment strategies adopted along the course of illness, from the perspective of Hong Kong Chinese PD patients. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 14 patients from January to June, 2016. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes emerged from the interviews: confronting the changes caused by Parkinson's disease and adjusting to living with Parkinson's disease. Participants reported experiencing turmoil due to progressive loss of functions and abilities, changes in role and identity and unattended emotional needs in the course of their illness. Considering the chronic and fluctuating nature of PD, rehabilitation programs should be applied to address not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological needs of PD patients. Behavioral strategies facilitating active health behaviours and accommodative psychological adjustment are salient to facilitate the holistic well‐being of PD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Depressive symptoms are common in older people; most previous research on elderly depression focused on individual-level characteristics or neighborhood socioeconomic status. Modifiable neighborhood characteristics of older people dwelling in low-income communities are under-studied. This study aims to identify potentially modifiable social and physical neighborhood characteristics that influence depressive symptoms independent of individual-level characteristics among older Chinese. Method: Data came from a cross-sectional survey conducted in four low-income public rental housing estates in Hong Kong in 2012. We interviewed a total of 400 elderly residents. The structured questionnaire covered demographics, activities of daily living, recent fall history, neighborhood support networks, and perceived proximity by walk to community facilities. Multiple regression was used to test whether inclusion of neighborhood factors in addition to individual characteristics increases model fit in explaining depressive symptoms in elders with low socioeconomic status. Results: At individual level, activities of daily living and income significantly predicted depressive symptoms. Receiving support from friends or neighbors is associated with fewer depressive symptoms. However, participants who received organizational support had a 1.17 points of increase on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). At-ease walkable proximity to medical facilities was positively associated with a better GDS score. Conclusion: Neighborhood support networks and perceived proximity by walk to community facilities contribute significantly to depressive symptoms among low-income elders. Programs and policies that facilitate neighborhood support and commuting or promote facility accessibility may help ameliorate depressive symptoms common among low-income elders.
