A synoptic-scale upwelling event that developed offthe east coast of the Hainan Island (EHIU) in the summer of 2010 is defined well via processing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sea surface temperature (SST) data. The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with high spatial resolution has been used to investigate this upwelling event. By comparing the ROMS results against tide station data, Argo float profiles and MODIS SST, it is confirmed that the ROMS reproduces the EHIU well. The cooler-water core (CWC) distinguished by waters < 27.5°C in the EHIU, which occurred in the east Qiongzhou Strait mouth area and was bounded by a high temperature gradient, was the focus of this paper. Vertical structure of the CWC suggests that interaction between the westward flow and the bathymetry slope played a significant role in the formation of CWC. Numerical experiments indicated that the westward flow in the Qiongzhou Strait was the result of tidal rectification over variable topography (Shi et al., 2002), thus tides played a critical role on the development of the CWC. The negative wind stress curl that dominated the east Qiongzhou Strait mouth area suppressed the intensity of the CWC by 0.2-0.4°C. Further, nonlinear interaction between tidal currents and wind stress enhanced vertical mixing greatly, which would benefit the development of the CWC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the best path data set of tropical cyclones from the China Meteorological Administration, NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research) reanalysis data, JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) SST (surface sea temperature) data and NCEP subsurface sea temperature data, the sea temperature background of tropical cyclones affecting Hainan Province in the dry season was analyzed using typical cases from November to December. The results show that there was a significant positive correlation between the number of tropical cyclones affecting Hainan Province and the sea surface temperature in the South China Sea and the Western Pacific. The high SST in the South China Sea and Northwest Pacific were favorable for the occurrence and development of tropical cyclones. The circulation situation also had a significant impact on tropical cyclones during the concurrent period. The wind field convergence was conducive to the occurrence and development of tropical cyclones. The high subsurface sea temperature in the Western Pacific at the depth of 5–50 m was conducive to the strengthening of convection in the Pacific warm pool and the occurrence of the tropical cyclones. The typical cases of 1993 and 2017 have effectively verified the impact of the sea surface temperature background and circulation situation on tropical cyclones affecting the Hainan Province from November to December. There are generally high chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a) where upwelling is prevalent. High Chl-a is often observed in upwelling areas of the northeastern coast of Hainan Island during the summer. Using the satellite remote sensing data, including sea surface temperature, sea surface wind and Chl-a data from 2009 to 2022, we analyze the spatial-temporal and inter-annual variation of Chl-a on the northeastern coast of Hainan Island. Then, the possible influence of environmental factors on Chl-a are further examined by using satellite data, as well as Ekman transport and Ekman pumping velocity derived from the wind products. Finally, the key factors affecting the changes of Chl-a are discussed by correlation analysis. The results show the significant interannual variation of Chl-a in the region, with the maximum of summer Chl-a during the prevalent period of upwelling. The correlation analyses reveal that there is a higher correlation coefficient between the summer Chl-a and the upwelling index (i.e., upwelling regional temperature anomaly), suggesting the role played by upwelling in the summer high Chl-a is more important than the other environmental factors. It is speculated that the summer Chl-a increase is not only influenced by wind-induced upwelling but also by the upwelling caused by tidal mixing, large-scale circulation, topographic changes, and typhoon events. An unusually persistent and heavy rainfall event occurred in Hainan Island from 1 to 9 October 2010, in association with one extended tropical depression (TD) over the South China Sea (SCS). Based on rain-gauge precipitation, satellite altimetry, in situ Argo profile, air–sea enthalpy flux, and reanalysis data, this study investigates the impact of warm ocean anomalies in the SCS on the formation and intensification of the extended TD, and their reinforcing effect on TD-related heavy rainfall. The TD intensified and migrated northward to the vicinity of Hainan Island. A thicker-than-normal warm subsurface layer that was present beneath the positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies contained a sufficient upper-ocean heat content to effectively restrain the TD's self-induced SST cooling effect, and available enthalpy fluxes were therefore sufficient to support the maintenance of the TD. The composite analyses confirm the reinforcing effect of warm oceanic anomalies in the central SCS off the south-central coast of Vietnam on heavy rainfall in Hainan Island, with the composite precipitation of "Warm eddy" cases being significantly larger in Hainan Island and northern Vietnam than that of the "Normal" cases, using reanalysis and remote sensing precipitation data over 29 years (1993–2021). Based on Himawari-8 Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data and the semi-automatic Topographic Position Index (TPI)-based mapping method, this study maps the significant coastal upwelling in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). The results show that the Minnan coastal upwelling mainly occurs within 100 km off the south coast of Fujian; the Yuedong coastal upwelling appears to the east of Pearl River Estuary, limited to the area shallower than 40 m; and the Qiongdong coastal upwelling occurs most frequently in the area shallower than 75 m off the east coast of Hainan Island. Based on the results, this paper quantitatively describes the temporal and spatial variations of upwelling duration, influence area, upwelling SST anomaly, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) increase. Different coastal upwelling regions in the NSCS are significantly different in characteristics. The Qiongdong coastal upwelling has the longest duration and occurs most frequently, the Yuedong coastal upwelling has the largest influence area and Chl-a increase, and the Minnan coastal upwelling is quite strong in the NSCS. This study examined carbonate dynamics in the northwestern South China Sea (NWSCS), an area jointly influenced by upwelling, river plumes and submarine groundwater discharge. Data were obtained from two cruises conducted in summer 2009 and 2012. In 2009, a high salinity-low temperature water mass occurred nearshore off northeastern Hainan Island, indicative of upwelling, commonly referred to as HNEU. A river plume fueled primarily by local rivers and characterized by low salinity and high temperature was observed in the NWSCS off the mainland roughly along the 30 m isobath. In 2012, coastal upwelling off northeastern Hainan Island was not detectable at the surface, but was observed at a different location off eastern Hainan Island (HEU). River plume waters in 2012 were patchily distributed, with a low salinity zone further westerly than that in 2009 and another on the mid-shelf of the NWSCS sourced from the Pearl River which reached out ∼250 km from the mouth of the Pearl River Estuary. In 2009, elevated dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) occurred in the coastal plume, where submarine groundwater discharge contributed DIC and TA additions of 38.9±20.5 and 42.5±22.3 µmol kg−1, respectively, with a DIC/TA ratio of ∼0.92, which made a minor contribution to the variation of seawater partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), pH and the aragonite saturation state index (Ωarag). Additionally, high surface phytoplankton production consumed DIC of 10.0±10.4 µmol kg−1 but did not significantly affect TA, which dominated pCO2 drawdown in the coastal plume water and increased the pH and Ωarag at surface. Submarine groundwater discharge was also observed in the region influenced by upwelling, but to a lesser degree than that impacted by coastal plume. Lower pH and Ωarag and higher pCO2 values than in offshore waters were observed downstream of the upwelling system, attributable largely to organic matter remineralization with a DIC addition of 23.8±8.4 µmol kg−1. In 2012, submarine groundwater discharge was not detected but high phytoplankton production dominated carbonate dynamics in the coastal plume water with a net DIC consumption of 104.2 µmol kg−1, which markedly drew down sea surface pCO2 and increased pH and Ωarag. In the Pearl River Plume, the solubility-driven CO2 sink exceeded biological CO2 uptake, resulting in an additional decrease of pH and Ωarag and increase of seawater pCO2. Taken together, this study demonstrated complex spatial and year-to-year variability, and the controls of the carbonate system under the joint modulations of upwelling, river plumes and submarine groundwater discharge. A first order estimate that considered the rise of atmospheric CO2 and seawater temperature further suggested a high risk of ocean acidification in this coastal area by the end of this century, which could be amplified under the stresses of river plumes, submarine groundwater discharge and organic matter remineralization. The duration of a single satellite deployment is insufficient to detect long-term trends in phytoplankton biomass. By integrating data from different platforms, we quantified the phytoplankton trends in the South China Sea (SCS) from the early-to-mid 1980s to the present. We focused on winter data because the sea surface temperature (SST) in winter has been increasing over the past three decades. We included data from three different eras: (1) the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS) period (1979–1983), (2) the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) period (1998–2002), and (3) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) period (2010–2014). There was a decline in phytoplankton (approximately 0.15 mg m−3) over the entire SCS from the CZCS period to the SeaWiFS period. The largest reduction (over 0.3 mg m−3) occurred in the northern and western SCS. After the SeaWiFS period, the phytoplankton increased by approximately 0.05 mg m−3. The largest increase was observed to the west of Luzon Strait, extending towards the east coast of Hainan Island. The fluctuations in phytoplankton from the early-to-mid 1980s to the present were consistent with the variation in the wind field rather than with the continued increase in SST. The wind speed decreased from the CZCS period to the SeaWiFS period and increased from the SeaWiFS period to the MODIS period.
