1. Developing an SDSS for optimal sustainable roof covering planning based on UHI variation at neighborhood scale.

Abstract

Nowadays, academics have paid special attention to global warming, because it has several issues such as urban heat island (UHI) related to the quality of life. For this purpose, a spatial decision support system (SDSS) has been developed to investigate the effect of parcels' roof covering type on surface heat island (SHI) values and its variation at the neighborhood scale in Tehran, Iran. This SDSS, as the innovation of the present research, consists of two main steps including estimating the UHI value in the study area and adopting the optimum set of parcels to change their roofs' cover with three types of vegetation, high-albedo material, and flagstone. The first step is accomplished by aggregating various indices related to land cover obtained from Landsat 8 images. The aggregation is done by linear regression method (LRM) with an RMSE and R 2 equal to 0.942 and 0.897, respectively. Then, the genetic algorithm was used to select the optimal subset, including 10% of the parcels in the area, to change their roof covering type based on minimizing the UHI's variation. The standard deviation obtained after the changes improved from 13.222 to 10.781 °C. The results indicate that to control UHI in the center of the region, it is necessary to inhibit UHI effects at the boundary of the study area with vegetation roof covering since flagstone and high-albedo materials have local effects on controlling the UHI effects.

Abstract

Resettlement can be an uncertain time for refugees as they have often suffered life-threatening circumstances prior to flight from their countries, yet few resettlement programs screen for mental health. The purpose of this study was to pilot the Refugee Health Screener-15 (RHS-15) to assess mental health and the Pathways to Wellness intervention to identify internal and structural barriers affecting resettlement with a refugee women's sewing group. Community collaborations that create healthy social and physical environments through access to resources, economic opportunities, and social support promote a holistic approach to health and can improve quality of life for this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory rheumatic disease. RA symptoms make the disease disabling and strongly impact the quality of life of patients. Among the available forms of treatment, balneotherapy seems to be one of the most common forms of nonpharmacological treatment for rheumatic disease. The aim was to explore the effectiveness of balneotherapy for improving the quality of life of patients with RA. Methods: Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and The Cochrane library were searched for randomized or clinical controlled trials published in English or Spanish until May 2021. Risk of bias of included articles were assessed using the Cochrane tool. A total 535 records were retrieved, and seven met the inclusion criteria. All the included studies showed statistically significant improvements in the quality of life of patients who received balneotherapy treatment despite differences in treatment administration. Sessions should be approximately 20 min long and use natural mineral waters enriched with elements, or mud, at a water temperature between 35–38 ◦C. Conclusions: Balneotherapy benefits the quality of life of people with RA. The obtained results show positive effects for both mineral bathing and immersion in sand or mud on the quality of life of people who suffer from RA. Yes
