Global warming has become the center of worldwide environmental concerns, especially in recent years. One of the ways to deal with global warming that causes climate change is to adopt the renewable energy power technique. Different renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, ocean, geothermal, and bioenergy are currently the backbone of green and sustainable economic growth. However, renewable energy sites are directly or indirectly dependent on environmental, social, and technical criteria.The main objective of this paper is to identify potential best renewable energy site alternatives using the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) and Geographical Information systems (GIS). Thus, the framework formed by the findings will guide investors in the renewable energy sector. The results showed that suitable areas for solar and wind were mainly located in the Hatay and Mersin of the Eastern Mediterranean Region in Turkey. The energy suitability site maps indicate that 8% (3.42 km2) and 3.39% (1554 km2) of the total study area have suitability and very suitability for solar and wind energy respectively. Moreover, it is seen that 44.82% (20,689km2) of the regions are the same when suitable and very suitable regions are overlaid for the installation of solar and wind energy sites. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate model performance. The area under the curve (AUC) values are calculated 0.87 and 0.95 for solar and wind energy, respectively. Relying on realistic data, this paper proposes an innovative method to identify suitable areas for solar and wind power plants. Turkey is a developing country with rising energy demands. Energy access is one of the key parameters to sustain the development, since the country meets a considerable part of energy demands by imported fossil fuels. Distributed photovoltaic power generation (DPPG) is one of the sustainable solutions to increase renewable energy sources (RES) shares in primary energy demand. This paper investigates Turkey's current policy system with its excellences and shortcomings in different stages of distributed photovoltaic power generation development in the country. By the assessment of the current situation, a strengths (S) and weaknesses (W) and external opportunities (O) and threats (T) analysis is also conducted to propose urgent strategies to contribute the development of DPPG sector in Turkey. This paper aims to provide a scientific approach that indicates the need to focus on renewable energy potential to meet energy needs in Turkey. Turkey began to take advantage of renewable energy technologies a few years ago. Accordingly, the issue of determining the best renewable resources for the country has been brought to the agenda in recent years. The issue was considered to be a limited multi-objective optimization problem allowing us to achieve a reliable result. However, the parameter of each resource was considered as a range value, rather than traditionally expressed as an exact value, and a multi-objective decision problem was developed with an interval coefficient. This method allows us to obtain more accurate and reliable results without the need to resort to normalization methods used to eliminate unit differences. According to the results of this study, the most convenient alternatives for Turkey are hydro, wind, and solar power. This study investigates the potential for renewable energy-based electricity generation using existing wave, wind, and solar energies in Türkiye. A significant part of Türkiye's energy needs is still met using fossil fuels. Considering the country's resources, renewable energy sources appear as an alternative source to meet these needs. The objective of this study is to find an effective, efficient, economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable way to produce electricity to reach net-zero targets and transition towards low-carbon and carbon-free energy systems. To be able to make a deep investigation about the relevant issue, six provinces from different regions of Türkiye (Antalya, Çanakkale, İstanbul, İzmir, Kırklareli, and Muğla) are assessed in terms of wave, wind, and solar energy potential, including wave data, wind speeds, sunshine duration, and global radiation values. Wind, wave, and solar energy data of the selected regions were taken from the ERA5 database, which is the weather forecast model of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye and the General Directorate of Meteorology. Calculations were made using monthly data for the last 5 years. Considering the coastal lengths in the determined regions, the annual total electrical power produced from wave, solar, and wind energies was calculated. In these calculations, the coastal length parameter was assumed to be uniform across all cities, and the electrical power potential from these energy sources was analyzed. Within the framework of these analyses, the number of houses in the selected regions whose electricity needs can be met was calculated. As a result, the potential electrical power and the amount of affordable housing units in the selected regions were compared. As an important result of the studies, it was determined that the characteristic features of the selected regions, such as wavelength, wave height, and wind speed, were directly related to the applicable coast length. The power obtained from wave energy was higher than that from other renewable energy sources, considering the determined coast lengths. Wave energy was followed by parabolic solar collector, wind, and photovoltaic solar energy systems. According to the model, the power obtained from renewable energy systems was at the highest level in the Kırklareli/Demirköy province compared to other locations. Kırklareli was followed by İstanbul, Antalya, İzmir, Muğla, and Çanakkale. It was also found that the electricity needs of 763,578 houses were met in the Kırklareli/Demirköy region, and the electricity needs of 470,590 houses were met in the Çanakkale/Ayvacık region. The statistically optimized factors using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for wind, photovoltaic, parabolic solar collector, and wave power were reported as 995.278, 4529.743, 2264.546, and 276,495.09, respectively. The optimal factors aim to achieve a total electricity generation rate of 2.491 × 109 (kWh/year), a total number of houses of 682,590.55 (number/year), and a total cost of USD 813,940,876. In line with the results obtained, the Kırklareli/Demirköy region becomes favorable when considering wave and wave-integrated wind and solar energies. In this study, an experimental performance comparison of a 2-axis tracking system with a fixed panel in a solar renewable energy system is conducted. The paper mainly focuses on a cost-benefit analysis of fixed and tracking modules. For this aim, an experimental setup was built and periodical measurements were then obtained from the setup. To provide a better comparison, the panels were exposed to the same conditions during the measurements. By considering the real-time experimental results, the paper provides a quantitative analysis of the feasibility of tracking panels for domestic applications as well as an analysis of payback period if a tracking system is used for a home-building application instead of using a conventional fixed module. Renewable energy sources have a tremendous amount of potential in Turkey. In the previous year, 43.2% of the country's electricity was generated from renewable energy sources. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy accounted for 4.7% of the electricity generation and the installed capacity was 9.425 GW with 9353 solar power plants of various types. This paper provides an overview of the current state of solar PV potential in Turkey, evaluates its capacity to meet the country's energy demand, and discusses its future prospects. The PESTLE analysis is performed based on political (P), economic (E), social (S), technological (T), legal (L), and environmental (E) factors to study the sustainable development of solar energy potential in Turkey. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the solar energy potential between the Konya and Diyarbakır regions which are recognized as promising areas for harnessing the country's abundant solar resources has been conducted using the PVsyst software. The electricity consumption in Turkey will be 380.2 TWh in 2025, 455.3 TWh in 2030, and 510.5 TWh in 2035, according to the Turkey National Energy Plan. Hence, it is essential to maximize the use of solar energy capacity in the production of electricity to meet the increased energy demand. Turkey is among the countries largely dependent on energy import. This dependency has increased interest in new and alternative energy sources. Installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems (RSPSs) in Turkey is increasing continuously regarding geographical and meteorological conditions. This paper presents an insight into the potential situation for Turkey and a simulation study for the RSPS designing and calculation for the faculty building at Marmara University in Istanbul. This simulation study demonstrates that 84.75-kWp grid-connected RSPS can produce remarkable power. The system is performed in detail with the PV*SOL software (Premium 2017 R8-Test Version, Valentin Software GmbH, Berlin, Germany). Detailed financial and performance analysis of the grid-connected RSPS for faculty building with various parameters is also carried out in this study. According to the simulation results, the system supplies 13.2% of the faculty buildings' annual electrical energy consumption. The annual savings value of faculty buildings' electrical consumption is approximately 90,298 kWh energy which costs roughly $7296. A photovoltaic (PV) system installation for the faculty building, which has considerable potential for solar energy and sunshine duration, is indispensable for clean energy requirements and was supported by the simulation results. In recent years, increasing the rate of green energy use in order to meet the increasing energy demand and combat global warming has become one of the important goals of the countries. For this reason, the integration of renewable energy sources as distributed generation has become increasingly popular. In this study, hybrid renewable energy systems were designed for the electrification of a 100-household area in the Sarayköy district of Denizli province, Turkey, and the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables program was used to optimize the required component outputs to to achieve the best economic and environmental results. A total of six hybrid renewable energy system designs, three grid-connected and three stand-alone, were created with different combinations of components such as photovoltaic panel, wind turbine, diesel generator, battery energy storage system, and converter. The most economical design was the grid-connected system with only solar energy with a unit energy cost of 0.0362 $/kWh, while the most cost-effective was the stand-alone system containing solar energy, wind energy, and batteries with 1.61 $/kWh. In terms of the environment, on the contrary, off-grid systems emit less carbon dioxide, while on-grid systems emit more carbon dioxide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the Vision 2023 agenda, the Turkish government plans to produce 30% of Turkey's electricity demand from renewable energy sources in 2023. This means hydroelectric, wind and solar energy capacities would increase to 36,000 MW, 20,000 MW and 3000 MW, respectively. Increased hydroelectric capacity would indeed benefit stability and flexibility of the existing energy infrastructure. However, increased wind and solar capacity could bring intermittency problems due to nature of these energy sources. Recently, pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) has become a hot topic in Turkey. And, its potential applications via synergistic utilisation with wind and solar energy to solve the aforementioned intermittency problems is being discussed. Yet, detailed information in the literature about PHES in Turkey is scarce. Therefore, this paper was intended to provide this crucial information. Detailed analysis showed even if all obstacles are overcome and all potential PHES capacity is used PHES could only provide a storage capacity worth equivalent to 0.6-0.8% of Turkey's annual electricity demand in 2023. It is estimated that the overnight capital cost required to develop this PHES potential is between 3.6 and 6.5 billion US$. Even so, there would be serious economic risks of PHES plants. Because, PHES systems are currently net consumers of energy. Current study also showed that instead of focusing on PHES, flexibility of Turkish electricity market could be sustained by diversifying energy sources and increasing nuclear energy capacity. It is estimated that an additional 490 MW of nuclear capacity could provide the same potential PHES capacity. By this way, intermittency problems associated with increased share of solar and wind energy can be easily tackled without imperilling the Vision 2023 energy targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar energy is a source of alternative energy for fossil fuels. The importance of solar energy is due to its qualities. It is both unlimited and nondestructive to nature. It also has zero emissions and limitations unlike fossil fuels. In this study, the conceptual design of a solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), with six hours of endurance, is performed. An evaluation of the literature and powertrain architecture design is carried out. Components, such as solar panels, battery, and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) are evaluated. The city of Eskisehir in Turkey is selected as a flight region with a continental climate. Flight environment and solar energy generation efficiency are investigated. Monthly sunshine times are calculated and compared with the semi empirically calculated power requirement of the UAV. It has been found that the UAV that is the subject of this study can achieve six hours of solar flight during the period between the fourth and the tenth months in Eskisehir, with 472.29 Wh of electrical energy required to be generated within a 1.084 m2 wing area. In this study, it was aimed to determine the regional priorities of renewable energy sources in Turkey. Unlike the literature, renewable energy sources were selected on a regional basis. While criteria weights were obtained by the AHP method, the alternative ranking was found for each region by the MARCOS method. While investment cost was determined as the most important criterion, it was determined as a result of the application of the MARCOS method that the energy sources that should be preferred firstly were hydro energy sources in Eastern Anatolia, Mediterranean, Southeastern Anatolia and Black Sea Region, wind energy sources in Marmara and Aegean Region, and solar energy sources in Central Anatolia Region. The consumption of fossil fuels has risen to be the main source of energy generation in most countries since the start of the industrial revolution around the world. The greenhouse gases generated from this use produce significant negative effects on the environment and human health. As a result of these disadvantages, the world needs to search for alternative energy sources that are low in carbon. The article focused on the amount of renewable energy generation in Turkey, Iran and Iraq from the collection of statistical data for the period from 2010-2020. Turkey occupied the clear progress to benefit from renewable energy sources, followed by Iran and Iraq. Where the percentage of annual growth of power generation based on hydropower in Turkey, Iran and Iraq (71.4%, 28.5% and 0.1%) respectively. With regard to other sources of renewable energy, Turkey had the largest share in generating energy from wind and solar energy, with an annual growth rate of (88.03%, 98.22%), respectively. Renewable energy sources have been placed as the key to facilitating to provide source of electricity generation. Solar power is one of the most preferable one among renewable energy sources due to the easy to generate in suitable environment. However, there are concerns with the location of solar power plants installation which causes low efficiency and ineffective use. Hence, determining the location for the usage of solar power sources is critical to mitigating those concerns. In addition, Turkey has been focused on investments on sustainable renewable energy sources and there are few studies which work on cities to reveal potential sources. In this study, GIS and intuitionistic fuzzy set based multi-criteria decision-making method is proposed for determining the most suitable areas for solar energy power plant potential site selection in Erzurum province, Turkey. Firstly, a solar energy power plant potential site selection map is made using a GIS program along with considering ecological risks and ecological criteria. Secondly, 20 districts of Erzurum are investigated in terms of 10 criteria (slope, aspect, solar irradiation, land use, wind speed, air temperature, air pressure, air humidity, land surface temperature and transmission line) using intuitionistic fuzzy sets. In these parameters the first time we looked the land use surface. The land use surface is affected the efficiency of the solar power plant. Finally, the comparisons of two methods are done to check consistency of results obtained. The results indicate that both approaches achieve same areas as the most suitable locations for solar power plants installations for Erzurum province in Turkey. The aim of this work is first to investigate possible locations for solar power plant installation using a mapping method, GIS, and then, Intuitionistic Fuzzy is applied to the problem to obtain optimum areas for solar energy. Also, more accurate results are provided comparing results of two methods, GIS and Intuitionistic Fuzzy. Sustainable sources like wind, solar, and geothermal power are defined as a clean source of renewable energy which has a less harmful impact on the environment than other energy sources such as coal, natural gas and oil. Turkey is one of the energy-importing countries where air pollution has been become an inevitable environmental concern. Thus, investments on sustainable sources have been developed rapidly in recent years in Turkey. This paves the way for studying a site selection problem considering both solar and wind energy in Igdir Province located in the east part of Turkey. In the literature, there are many studies on solar-wind energy to select a desirable site for both energy sources, and many solution techniques have been proposed dealing with this problem. In this study, one of multi-criteria decision-making methods named analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and geographical information systems (GIS) are used to determine suitable site selection for solar-wind energy investigating four counties of Igdir: Tuzluca, Igdir Central, Karakoyunlu and Aralik. The aim of this work is first to investigate possible locations for solar-wind power plant installation using a mapping method, GIS, and then, AHP is applied to the problem to obtain optimum areas for both solar-wind energy. Also, more accurate results are provided comparing results of two methods, GIS and AHP. The results reveal that 524.5 km2 for solar power plant and 147.2 km2 for wind turbine are suitable while only 49.1 km2 is suitable for solar-wind power plan installation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The unique properties of solar energy have led to increasing demands in various countries. In order to use solar energy effectively, environmental and geographical circumstances related to solar intensity must be considered. Different factors may affect the selection of suitable locations for solar plants. These factors must be considered concurrently for optimum location identification. This article presents an approach for the location of solar plants by data envelopment analysis (DEA). Efficiency scores over a twelve month period were evaluated by using a modified similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method.
