Mid-infrared (mid-IR) observations are powerful in identifying heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have weak emission in other wavelengths. Data from the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope provides an excellent opportunity to perform such studies. We take advantage of the MIRI imaging data from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey to investigate the AGN population in the distant universe. We estimate the source properties of MIRI-selected objects by utilizing spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling, and classify them into star-forming galaxies (SFs), SF-AGN mixed objects, and AGN. The source numbers of these types are 433, 102, and 25, respectively, from four MIRI pointings covering ∼9 arcmin ^2 . The sample spans a redshift range of ≈0–5. We derive the median SEDs for all three source types, respectively, and publicly release them. The median MIRI SED of AGN is similar to the typical SEDs of hot dust-obscured galaxies and Seyfert 2s, for which the mid-IR SEDs are dominated by emission from AGN-heated hot dust. Based on our SED-fit results, we estimate the black hole accretion density (BHAD; i.e., total BH growth rate per comoving volume) as a function of redshift. At z < 3, the resulting BHAD agrees with the X-ray measurements in general. At z > 3, we identify a total of 27 AGN and SF-AGN mixed objects, leading to that our high- z BHAD is substantially higher than the X-ray results (∼0.5 dex at z ≈ 3–5). This difference indicates MIRI can identify a large population of heavily obscured AGN missed by X-ray surveys at high redshifts.

One of the fundamental goals of modern astrophysics is to estimate the physical parameters of galaxies. We present a hierarchical Bayesian model to compute age maps from images in the H α line (taken with Taurus tunable filter, TTF), ultraviolet band (GALEX far UV, FUV), and infrared bands (Spitzer 24, 70, and 160 |$\mu$| m). We present the burst ages for young stellar populations in a sample of nearby and nearly face-on galaxies. The H α to FUV flux ratio is a good relative indicator of the very recent star formation history (SFH). As a nascent star-forming region evolves, the H α line emission declines earlier than the UV continuum, leading to a decrease in the H α/FUV ratio. Using star-forming galaxy models, sampled with a probabilistic formalism, and allowing for a variable fraction of ionizing photons in the clusters, we obtain the corresponding theoretical ratio H α/FUV to compare with our observed flux ratios, and thus to estimate the ages of the observed regions. We take into account the mean uncertainties and the interrelationships between parameters when computing H α/FUV. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model where a joint probability distribution is defined to determine the parameters (age, metallicity, IMF) from the observed data (the observed flux ratios H α/FUV). The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) has mapped 100 deg² of the Galactic plane for water masers and thermal molecular line emission using the 22 m Mopra telescope. We describe the automated spectral-line fitting pipelines used to determine the properties of emission detected in HOPS data cubes, and use these to derive the physical and kinematic properties of gas in the survey. A combination of the angular resolution, sensitivity, velocity resolution and high critical density of lines targeted make the HOPS data cubes ideally suited to finding precursor clouds to the most massive and dense stellar clusters in the Galaxy. We compile a list of the most massive HOPS ammonia regions and investigate whether any may be young massive cluster progenitor gas clouds. HOPS is also ideally suited to trace the flows of dense gas in the Galactic Centre. We find the kinematic structure of gas within the inner 500 pc of the Galaxy is consistent with recent predictions for the dynamical evolution of gas flows in the centre of the Milky Way. We confirm a recent finding that the dense gas in the inner 100 pc has an oscillatory kinematic structure with characteristic length-scale of 20 pc, and also identify similar oscillatory kinematic structure in the gas at radii larger than 100 pc. We study the distribution and evolution of the stellar mass and the star formation rate (SFR) of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) over 0.04 < z < 1.3 using a large sample of 407 X-ray galaxy groups selected from the COSMOS, AEGIS, and XMM-LSS fields. We compare our results with predictions from the semi-analytic models based on the Millennium simulation. In contrast to model predictions, we find that, as the Universe evolves, the stellar mass distribution evolves towards a normal distribution. This distribution tends to skew to low-mass BGGs at all redshifts implying the presence of a star-forming population of the BGGs with MS ∼ 1010.5 M⊙ which results in the shape of the stellar mass distribution deviating from a normal distribution. In agreement with the models and previous studies, we find that the mean stellar mass of BGGs grows with time by a factor of ∼2 between z = 1.3 and z = 0.1, however, the significant growth occurs above z = 0.4. The BGGs are not entirely a dormant population of galaxies, as low-mass BGGs in low-mass haloes are more active in forming stars than the BGGs in more massive haloes, over the same redshift range. We find that the average SFR of the BGGs evolves steeply with redshift and fraction of the passive BGGs increases as a function of increasing stellar mass and halo mass. Finally, we show that the specific SFR of the BGGs within haloes with M200 ≤ 1013.4 M⊙ decreases with increasing halo mass at z < 0.4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the completed KMOS3D survey, an integral field spectroscopic survey of 739 galaxies at 0.6 < z < 2.7 using the K-band Multi Object Spectrograph (KMOS) at the Very Large Telescope. The KMOS3D survey provides a population-wide census of kinematics, star formation, outflows, and nebular gas conditions both on and off the star-forming galaxy main sequence through the spatially resolved and integrated properties of Hα, [N ii], and [S ii] emission lines. We detect Hα emission for 91% of galaxies on the main sequence of star formation and 79% overall. The depth of the survey has allowed us to detect galaxies with star formation rates below 1 M⊙ yr−1, as well as to resolve 81% of detected galaxies with ≥3 resolution elements along the kinematic major axis. The detection fraction of Hα is a strong function of both color and offset from the main sequence, with the detected and nondetected samples exhibiting different spectral energy distribution shapes. Comparison of Hα and UV+IR star formation rates reveal that dust attenuation corrections may be underestimated by 0.5 dex at the highest masses (). We confirm our first year results of a high rotation-dominated fraction (monotonic velocity gradient and vrot/) of 77% for the full KMOS3D sample. The rotation-dominated fraction is a function of both stellar mass and redshift, with the strongest evolution measured over the redshift range of the survey for galaxies with . The paper presents results of studying the kinematics of the ionized gas in the galaxy of the Large Magellanic Cloud type NGC 7292 obtained with the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory (CMO SAI MSU) and the 6-m BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS). Analysis of the velocity fields of the ionized and neutral hydrogen showed that the kinematic center of NGC 7292 located at the center of the bar, northwest of the photometric center of the galaxy (the southeastern end of the bar) previously taken as the center of NGC 7292. In addition to the circular rotation of the gas, the radial motions associated with the bar play a significant role in the kinematics of the disk. The observed perturbations of the gaseous-disk kinematics induced by the ongoing star formation do not exceed those caused by the bar. It is possible that part of the non-circular motions (at the southeastern end of the bar which is the brightest H II region) may be related to the effects of the capture of a dwarf companion or a gaseous cloud. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of teaming up data from the radio to the far-infrared (FIR) regime for the characterization of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). These galaxies are thought to be the star-forming progenitors of local massive quiescent galaxies and to play a pivotal role in the reconstruction of the cosmic star formation rate density up to high redshift. Due to their dust-enshrouded nature, DSFGs are often invisible in the near-infrared/optical/UV bands. Therefore, they necessitate observations at longer wavelengths, primarily the FIR band, where dust emission occurs, and the radio band, which is not affected by dust absorption. Combining data from these two spectral windows makes it possible to characterize even the dustiest objects, enabling the retrieval of information about their age, dust temperature, and star-formation status, and facilitates the differentiation between various galaxy populations that evolve throughout cosmic history. Despite the detection of faint radio sources being a challenging task, this study demonstrates that an effective strategy to build statistically relevant samples of DSFGs would be reaching deep sensitivities in the radio band, even restricted to smaller areas, and then combining these radio observations with FIR/submm data. Additionally, this paper quantifies the improvement in the spectral energy distribution (SED) reconstruction of DSFGs by incorporating ALMA band measurements, in particular, in its upgraded status thanks to the anticipated Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade. We search for local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs), selecting photometric candidates by broadband color excess and machine-learning techniques with the SDSS photometric data. After removing stellar contaminants by shallow spectroscopy with Seimei and Nayuta telescopes, we confirm that three candidates are EMPGs with 0.05–0.1 Z ⊙ by deep Magellan/MagE spectroscopy for faint [Oiii] λ 4363 lines. Using a statistical sample consisting of 105 spectroscopically confirmed EMPGs taken from our study and the literature, we calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) of the EMPGs and all SDSS galaxies to quantify environments of EMPGs. Comparing another CCF of all SDSS galaxies and comparison of SDSS galaxies in the same stellar-mass range (107.0–108.4 M ⊙), we find no significant (>1 σ) difference between these two CCFs. We also compare mass–metallicity relations (MZRs) of the EMPGs and those of galaxies at z ∼ 0–4 with a steady chemical evolution model and find that the EMPG MZR is comparable with the model prediction on average. These clustering and chemical properties of EMPGs are explained by a scenario of stochastic metal-poor gas accretion on metal-rich galaxies showing metal-poor star formation. Extending the broadband color excess technique to a high- z EMPG search, we select 17 candidates of z ∼ 4–5 EMPGs with the deep (≃30 mag) near-infrared JWST/NIRCam images obtained by ERO and ERS programs. We find galaxy candidates with negligible [Oiii] λ λ 4959,5007 emission weaker than the local EMPGs and known high- z galaxies, suggesting that some of these candidates may fall in the range of 0–0.01 Z ⊙, which potentially breaks the lowest metallicity limit known to date. To study the demographics of interstellar ices in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way, we obtain near-infrared spectra of 109 red point sources using NASA IRTF/SpeX at Maunakea. We select the sample from near- and mid-infrared photometry, including 12 objects in the previous paper of this series, to ensure that these sources trace a large amount of absorption through clouds in each line of sight. We find that most of the sample (100 objects) show CO band-head absorption at 2.3 ÎĽ m, tagging them as red (super-) giants. Despite the photospheric signature, however, a fraction of the sample with L -band spectra (9/82 = 0.11) exhibit large H2O ice column densities (N > 2 Ă— 1018 cmâˆ'2), and six of them also reveal CH3OH ice absorption. As one of such objects is identified as a young stellar object (YSO) in our previous work, these ice-rich sight lines are likely associated with background stars in projection to an extended envelope of a YSO or a dense cloud core. The low frequency of such objects in the early stage of stellar evolution implies a low star-formation rate (≲0.02 M ⊙ yrâˆ'1), reinforcing the previous claim on the suppressed star-formation activity in the CMZ. Our data also indicate that the strong “shoulder” CO2 ice absorption at 15.4 ÎĽ m observed in YSO candidates in the previous paper arises from CH3OH-rich ice grains having a large CO2 concentration [ N (CO2)/ N (CH3OH) ≈ 1/3]. JWST observations of galaxies at z ≳ 8 suggest that they are more luminous and clumpier than predicted by most models, prompting several proposals on the physics of star formation and feedback in the first galaxies. In this paper, we focus on the role of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in regulating star formation by performing a set of cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of one galaxy at subparsec resolution with different radiative feedback models. We find that the suppression of cooling by far-UV (FUV) radiation (i.e., H2 dissociating radiation) from Population II stars is the main physical process triggering the formation of compact and massive star clusters and is responsible for the bursty star formation observed in metal-poor galaxies at z ≳ 10. Indeed, artificially suppressing FUV radiation leads to a less intense continuous mode of star formation distributed into numerous but low-mass open star clusters. Due to the intense FUV field, low-metallicity clouds remain warm (∼104 K) until they reach a relatively high density (≳103 cm−3), before becoming self-shielded and transitioning to a colder (∼100 K), partially molecular phase. As a result, star formation is delayed until the clouds accumulate enough mass to become gravitationally unstable. At this point, the clouds undergo rapid star formation, converting gas into stars with high efficiency. We therefore observe exceptionally bright galaxies (10 times brighter than for continuous star formation) and subsequent quenched "dead" galaxies that did not form stars for tens of Myr. This paper investigates a mathematical model of a star formation system, including in-fall of gas from the local environment and out-flow of gas due to supernovae explosions and perturbations. In particular, the objective is to study how the variable density of interstellar components of the system namely atomic, molecular, and stellar components, interact in the star formation cycle. Under special parametric conditions, both limit cycle and stationary state behavior are observed. This indicates a stable star formation cycle in discrete episodes and an unstable star formation cycle converging to a stationary state. Observations of duty cycles under various parameters with varying intensity of supernovae shockwaves for dwarf galaxies, showed that the system adopts a self-regulatory oscillation state beyond a particular value. Analysis of giant galaxies showed decreased oscillatory periods for higher values. This is implied by the low production rate of supernovae in dwarf galaxies, increased production of cold gas, continuation of the cyclic behavior for a longer time. Stronger shockwaves increase the rate of dissipation of gases, resulting in shredding of mass, to get transferred into a precipitous lower mass. Star-forming rate (SFR) of high-mass star systems was found to vary against higher-order perturbations of supernovae shockwave but remained the same in the case of low-mass star systems. We present JWST and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging for the lensing system SPT0418−47, which includes a strongly lensed, dusty, star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 4.225 and an associated multiply imaged companion. The JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging observations presented in this paper were acquired as part of the Early Release Science program Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star formation (TEMPLATES). This data set provides robust mutiwavelength detections of stellar light in both the main (SPT0418A) and companion (SPT0418B) galaxies, while the ALMA detection of [C ii ] emission confirms that SPT0418B lies at the same redshift as SPT0418A. We infer that the projected physical separation of the two galaxies is 4.42 ± 0.05 kpc. We derive total magnifications of μ = 29 ± 1 and μ = 4.1 ± 0.7 for SPT0418A and SPT0418B, respectively. We use both prospector and cigale to derive stellar masses. We find that SPT0418A has a stellar mass of M * = 3.4 − 0.6 + 1.1 × 10 10 M ⊙ from prospector or M * = 1.5 ± 0.3 × 1010 M ⊙ from cigale. The stellar mass ratio of SPT0418A and SPT0418B is roughly between 4 and 7 ( 4.2 − 1.6 + 1.9 for prospector and 7.5 ± 3.7 for cigale). We see evidence of extended structure associated with SPT0418A that is suggestive of a tidal feature. These features, along with the close projected proximity, imply that the system is interacting. Interestingly, the star formation rates and stellar masses of both galaxies are consistent with the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at this epoch, indicating that this ongoing interaction has not noticeably elevated the star formation levels. The mere existence of multiple stellar generations in Milky Way globular clusters indicates that each generation was unable to stop star formation, that instead persisted unimpeded for several million years. This evidence argues for an extended stage of star formation within a forming globular cluster, during which stellar feedback was substantially ineffective and the nascent globular cluster was able to accrete processed gas from its surrounding, and efficiently convert it into successive stellar generations. It has been argued that such delayed feedback results from core collapse in most massive stars failing to trigger an energetic supernova explosion, but rather leading directly to black hole formation. Thus, globular clusters offer a concrete phenomenological example for the lack of feedback in young starbursts, an option that has been widely advocated to account for the unexpected abundance of ultraviolet-luminous galaxies at z = 9–16, as revealed by JWST observations. Quasars have an important role in the studies of galaxy evolution and star formation. The rare close projection of two quasars in the sky allows us to study the environment and matter exchange around the foreground quasar ( Q S O f g ) and the background quasar ( Q S O b g ). This paper proposes a pipeline DPQP for quasar pair (QP) candidates' detection based on photometric images and the corresponding spectra. The pipeline consists of three main parts: a target source detector, a regressor, and a discriminator. In the first part, the target source detection network–YOLOv4 (TSD-YOLOv4) and the target source classification network (TSCNet) are used in sequence to detect quasars in SDSS photometric images. In the second part, a depth feature extraction network of quasar images (DE-QNet) is constructed to estimate the redshifts of quasars from photometric images. In the third part, a quasar pair score (Q-Score) metric is proposed based on the spectral analysis. The larger the Q-Score, the greater the possibility of two pairs being a quasar pair. The experimental results show that between redshift 1.0 and 4.0, the MAE of DE-QNet is 0.316, which is 16.1% lower than the existing method. Far-infrared and submillimeter observations have established the fundamental role of dust-obscured star formation in the assembly of stellar mass over the past ∼12 billion years. At z = 2–4, the so-called "cosmic noon", the bulk of star formation is enshrouded in dust, and dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) contain ∼ 50 % of the total stellar mass density. Star formation occurs in dense molecular clouds, and is regulated by a complex interplay between all the ISM components that contribute to the energy budget of a galaxy: gas, dust, cosmic rays, interstellar electromagnetic fields, gravitational field, and dark matter. Molecular gas is the actual link between star-forming gas and its complex environment: much of what we know about star formation comes from observations of molecular line emissions. They provide by far the richest information about the star formation process. However, their interpretation requires complex modeling of the astrochemical networks which regulate molecular formation and establish molecular abundances in a cloud, and a modeling of the physical conditions of the gas in which molecular energy levels become populated. This paper critically reviews the main astrochemical parameters needed to obtain predictions about molecular signals in DSFGs. Molecular lines can be very bright compared to the continuum emission, but radiative transfer models are required to properly interpret the observed brightness. We review the current knowledge and the open questions about the interstellar medium of DSFGs, outlining the key role of molecular gas as a tracer and shaper of the star formation process. We compare the molecular cloud properties in subgalactic regions of two galaxies, barred spiral NGC 1313, which is forming many massive clusters, and flocculent spiral NGC 7793, which is forming significantly fewer massive clusters despite having a similar star formation rate to NGC 1313. We find that there are larger variations in cloud properties between different regions within each galaxy than there are between the galaxies on a global scale, especially for NGC 1313. There are higher masses, line widths, pressures, and virial parameters in the arms of NGC 1313 and the center of NGC 7793 than in the interarm and outer regions of the galaxies. The massive cluster formation of NGC 1313 may be driven by its greater variation in environment, allowing more clouds with the necessary conditions to emerge, although no one parameter seems primarily responsible for the difference in star formation. Meanwhile NGC 7793 has clouds that are as massive and have as much kinetic energy as the clouds in the arms of NGC 1313, but have densities and pressures more similar to those in the interarm regions and so are less inclined to collapse and form stars. The cloud properties in NGC 1313 and NGC 7793 suggest that spiral arms, bars, interarm regions, and flocculent spirals each represent distinct environments with regard to molecular cloud populations. We see surprisingly little difference in surface density between the regions, suggesting that the differences in surface densities frequently seen between arm and interarm regions in lower-resolution studies are indicative of the sparsity of molecular clouds, rather than differences in their true surface density. Our understanding of the formation and interaction processes of astronomical structures in the Universe and in galaxies has significantly expanded due to recent progress in improving the quality of observations, brought about by the emergence of new telescopes. Such processes are associated with the release of a significant amount of energy and may influence our vital activities. One example of energy flow release is magnetic storms, which are associated with processes occurring on the Sun. Such storms lead to disruptions of communication facilities, impact people, and can cause satellite and aircraft failures. There are objects in both near and deep space that are much more powerful than our star. In such objects, enormous energy flows are generated and released in the form of space jets. These energy flows occur in quasars, black holes, protostars, and during supernova explosions of types Ia, Ib, Ic, and II. During a supernova explosion, an immense amount of energy is released in the form of energy and high-energy particles. Such processes can have a significant impact on the safety of space flights. In this paper, the processes of formation of stellar systems within a turbulent interstellar medium are considered. This process is the result of complex processes that occur in the interstellar medium and denser gas formations – molecular clouds. At the same time, there are nonlinear interactions between turbulence and gravity, collisions between molecular clouds, interactions with shock waves, and so on. Supersonic turbulence is one of the main reasons for the formation of dynamic prestellar structures. The evolution of superdense substances formation begins when they gather in turbulent flows or are formed by supersonic collisions between molecular clouds. This process continues until these areas reach prestellar density. Depending on various factors, these superdense formations can either collapse and form new star systems or disintegrate, returning the substance to the interstellar medium. Until recently, the prevailing opinion was that a significant portions of molecular clouds were not gravitationally bound. Conclusions about this were made based on the virial theorem, which expresses the relationship between gravitational and kinetic energy. However, recent studies have refuted this. In this paper, the results of a simulation carried out to study the collision of large ellipsoidal and spherical molecular clouds in a three-dimensional setting. Observed breakBRD ("break bulges in red disks") galaxies are a nearby sample of face-on disk galaxies with particularly centrally concentrated star formation: they have red disks but recent star formation in their centers as measured by the D n 4000 spectral index. In Kopenhafer et al., a comparable population of breakBRD analogs was identified in the TNG simulation, in which the central concentration of star formation was found to reflect a central concentration of dense, star-forming gas caused by a lack of dense gas in the galaxy outskirts. In this paper, we examine the circumgalactic medium of the central breakBRD analogs to determine if the extended halo gas also shows differences from that around comparison galaxies with comparable stellar mass. We examine the circumgalactic medium gas mass, specific angular momentum, and metallicity in these galaxy populations. We find less gas in the circumgalactic medium of breakBRD galaxies, and that the breakBRD circumgalactic medium is slightly more concentrated than that of comparable M * galaxies. In addition, we find that the angular momentum in the circumgalactic medium of breakBRD galaxies tends to be low for their stellar mass, and shows more misalignment to the angular momentum vector of the stellar disk. Finally, we find that the circumgalactic medium metallicity of breakBRD galaxies tends to be high for their stellar mass. Together with their low star formation rate, we argue that these circumgalactic medium properties indicate a small amount of disk feeding concentrated in the central regions and a lack of low-metallicity gas accretion from the intergalactic medium. Serpens molecular cloud is one of the most active sites of ongoing star formation at a distance of about 300 pc, and hence, is very well-suited for studies of young low-mass stars and sub-stellar objects. In this paper, for the Serpens star-forming region, we found potential members of the Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) population from the Gaia DR3 data and study their kinematics and distribution. We compiled a catalog of 656 YSOs from available catalogs ranging from X-ray to the infrared. We use this as a reference set and cross-match it to find 87 Gaia DR3 member stars to produce a control sample with revised parameters. We queried the DR3 catalog with these parameters and found 1196 stars. We then applied three different density-based machine learning algorithms (DBSCAN, OPTICS and HDBSCAN) to this sample and found potential YSOs. The three clustering algorithms identified a common set of 822 YSO members from Gaia DR3 in this region. The paper is devoted to the analysis of the observation results with the single-mirror radio telescope RT-22 (PRAO, LPI) in the water vapor maser line at 22 GHz in the direction of dust clumps from the ATLASGAL and Bolocam large-scale blind surveys in the millimeter continuum. The aim of this paper is to search for masers in the water vapor line in previously unexplored sources and to study the variability of known masers. Observations of 140 sources resulted in the detection of maser emission at 22 GHz in six sources, and in four sources (ATLASGAL 016.987+00.981, 017.216+00.821, 018.701–00.229, and Bolocam 081.174–00.100) masers were detected for the first time. In two sources (ATLASGAL 034.195–0.592 and Bolocam 081.174–0.1), the water vapor line masers showed significant variability during the 8-month observation and follow-up program. Comparison of RT-22 observational data with archival data from the GBT‑100 telescope (US National Radio Astronomy Observatory) showed that 9 out of 140 sources show a significant change in the radiation flux density of masers: two sources changed from the category of masers with low brightness ( Jy) to the category bright (more than 10 Jy), and in seven relatively bright earlier (more than 3 Jy) masers, no radiation was detected. Significant changes in the characteristics of the maser emission may indicate changes in the environmental conditions in which the maser emission was produced, which is of interest for further study of maser-related processes. Tidal streams and stellar shells are naturally formed in galaxy interactions and mergers. The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS), the North-East (NE), and Western (W) stellar shelves observed in Andromeda Galaxy (M31) are examples of these structures and were formed through the merger of M31 and a satellite galaxy. Recent observational papers have provided strong evidence that the shells and GSS originate from a single progenitor. In this paper, we investigate the formation of these two stellar shelves and the detailed nature of their relationship to the GSS. We present numerical simulations of tidal disruption of a satellite galaxy assuming that it is a progenitor of the GSS and the shell system. We represent the progenitor as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the stellar mass of 109 M⊙ and evolve its merger with M31 for 3 Gyr to reproduce the chemodynamical properties of the NE and W shelves. We find that an initial metallicity of the progenitor with a negative radial gradient of ΔFeH  = −0.3 ± 0.2 successfully reproduces observed metallicities of the NE, W shelves, and the GSS, showing that all these structures can originate from the same merger event. A variety of interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs) have been detected in various physical conditions. However, in the protostellar and protoplanetary environments, their complex kinematics make line profiles blend together and the line strength of weak lines weaker. In this paper, we utilize the principal component analysis technique to develop a filtering method that can extract COM spectra from the main kinematic component associated with COM emission and increase the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of spectra. This filtering method corrects non-Gaussian line profiles caused by the kinematics. For this development, we adopt the ALMA BAND 6 spectral survey data of V883 Ori, an eruptive young star with a Keplerian disk. A filter was, first, created using 34 strong and well-isolated COM lines and then applied to the entire spectral range of the data set. The first principal component (PC1) describes the most common emission structure of the selected lines, which is confined within the water sublimation radius (∼0.″3) in the Keplerian disk of V883 Ori. Using this PC1 filter, we extracted high-S/N kinematics-corrected spectra of V883 Ori over the entire spectral coverage of ∼50 GHz. The PC1-filtering method reduces the noise by a factor of ∼2 compared to the average spectra over the COM emission region. One important advantage of this PC1-filtering method over the previously developed matched-filtering method is the ability to preserve the original integrated intensities of COM lines. Mapping of multiple lines such as the fine-structure emission from [C ii ] (157.7 μ m), [O iii ] (52 and 88.4 μ m), and rotational emission lines from CO are of particular interest for upcoming line intensity mapping (LIM) experiments at millimeter wavelengths, due to their brightness features. Several upcoming experiments aim to cover a broad range of scientific goals, from detecting signatures of the epoch of reionization to the physics of star formation and its role in galaxy evolution. In this paper, we develop a semianalytic approach to modeling line strengths as functions of the star formation rate (SFR) or infrared luminosity based on observations of local and high- z galaxies. This package, LIMpy (Line Intensity Mapping in Python), estimates the intensity and power spectra of [C ii ], [O iii ], and CO rotational transition lines up to the J levels (1–0) to (13–12) based both on analytic formalism and on simulations. We develop a relation among halo mass, SFR, and multiline intensities that permits us to construct a generic formula for the evolution of several line strengths up to z ∼ 10. We implement a variety of star formation models and multiline luminosity relations to estimate the astrophysical uncertainties on the intensity power spectrum of these lines. As a demonstration, we predict the signal-to-noise ratio of [C ii ] detection for an EoR-Spec-like instrument on the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope. Furthermore, the ability to use any halo catalog allows the LIMpy code to be easily integrated into existing simulation pipelines, providing a flexible tool to study intensity mapping in the context of complex galaxy formation physics. We use a complete sample of 211 nearby (⁠|$z< 0.08$|⁠), dwarf (10 |$^{8}$|  M |$_{\odot }$| < |$M_{\rm {\star }}$| < 10 |$^{9.5}$|  M |$_{\odot }$|⁠) galaxies in low-density environments, to study their structural properties: effective radii (⁠|$R_{\rm e }$|⁠), effective surface brightnesses (⁠|$\langle \mu \rangle _{\rm e}$|⁠), and colour gradients. We explore these properties as a function of stellar mass and the three principal dwarf morphological types identified in a companion paper – early-type galaxies (ETGs), late-type galaxies (LTGs), and featureless systems. The median |$R_{\rm e }$| of LTGs and featureless galaxies are factors of |$\sim$| 2 and |$\sim$| 1.2 larger than the ETGs. While the median |$\langle \mu \rangle _{\rm e}$| of the ETGs and LTGs is similar, the featureless class is |$\sim$| 1 mag arcsec |$^{-2}$| fainter. Although they have similar median |$R_{\rm e }$|⁠ , the featureless and ETG classes differ significantly in their median |$\langle \mu \rangle _{\rm e}$|⁠ , suggesting that their evolution is different and that the featureless galaxies are not a subset of the ETGs. While massive ETGs typically exhibit negative or flat colour gradients, dwarf ETGs generally show positive colour gradients (bluer centres). The growth of ETGs therefore changes from being 'outside-in' to 'inside-out' as we move from the dwarf to the massive regime. The colour gradients of dwarf and massive LTGs are, however, similar. Around 46 per cent of dwarf ETGs show prominent, visually identifiable blue cores which extend out to |$\sim$| 1.5 |$R_{\rm e}$|⁠. Finally, compared to their non-interacting counterparts, interacting dwarfs are larger, bluer at all radii and exhibit similar median |$\langle \mu \rangle _{\rm e}$|⁠ , indicating that interactions typically enhance star formation across the entire galaxy. This paper analyses spectropolarimetric observations of the classical T Tauri star (CTTS) GM Aurigae collected with SPIRou, the near-infrared spectropolarimeter at the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, as part of the SLS and SPICE Large Programs. We report for the first time results on the large-scale magnetic field at the surface of GM Aur using Zeeman Doppler imaging. Its large-scale magnetic field energy is almost entirely stored in an axisymmetric poloidal field, which places GM Aur close to other CTTSs with similar internal structures. A dipole of about 730 G dominates the large-scale field topology, while higher order harmonics account for less than 30 per cent of the total magnetic energy. Overall, we find that the main difference between our three reconstructed maps (corresponding to sequential epochs) comes from the evolving tilt of the magnetic dipole, likely generated by non-stationary dynamo processes operating in this largely convective star rotating with a period of about 6 d. Finally, we report a |$5.5\sigma$| detection of a signal in the activity-filtered radial velocity data of semi-amplitude |$110\pm 20$|  m s |$^{-1}$|  at a period of |$8.745\pm 0.009$|  d. If attributed to a close-in planet in the inner accretion disc of GM Aur, it would imply that this planet candidate has a minimum mass of |$1.10 \pm 0.30\, M_\mathrm{Jup}$| and orbits at a distance of |$0.082 \pm 0.002$|  au. In this paper, our purpose is to investigate the anisotropic stellar structure caused by f (R , ϕ) modified gravity, where R represents the Ricci scalar and ϕ represents the scalar potential. This study emphasizes the impact of static spherically symmetric stellar structures using anisotropic distribution. Furthermore, an anisotropic matter source is employed to explore the stability of star formations. To get the value of unknown parameters of the compact structures, we compare the Schwarzschild metric to external geometry. Moreover, we examine the physical attributes of compact objects by presuming a viable f (R , ϕ) = ϕ (R + α R 2) gravity model. We analyze the graphical behavior of density and pressure, the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkov equation, energy conditions, mass function, surface redshift, and adiabatic index. Using deep imaging from the CANDELS and HFF surveys, we present bulge+disc decompositions with galfitm for |$\sim$| 17 000 galaxies over |$0.2 \le z\le 1.5$|⁠. We use various model parameters to select reliable samples of discs and bulges, and derive their stellar masses using an empirically calibrated relation between mass-to-light ratio and colour. Across our entire redshift range, we show that discs follow stellar mass–size relations that are consistent with those of star-forming galaxies, suggesting that discs primarily evolve via star formation. In contrast, the stellar mass–size relations of bulges are mass-independent. Our novel data set further enables us to separate components into star-forming and quiescent based on their specific star formation rates. We find that both star-forming discs and star-forming bulges lie on stellar mass–size relations that are similar to those of star-forming galaxies, while quiescent discs are typically smaller than star-forming discs and lie on steeper relations, implying distinct evolutionary mechanisms. Similar to quiescent galaxies, quiescent bulges show a flattening in the stellar mass–size relation at |$\sim 10^{10}$|  M |$_\odot$|⁠ , below which they show little mass dependence. However, their best-fitting relations have lower normalizations, indicating that at a given mass, bulges are smaller than quiescent galaxies. Finally, we obtain rest-frame colours for individual components, showing that bulges typically have redder colours than discs, as expected. We visually derive UVJ criteria to separate star-forming and quiescent components and show that this separation agrees well with component colour. Our ability to trace the star-forming molecular gas is important to our understanding of the Universe. We can trace this gas using CO emission, converting the observed CO intensity into the H |$_2$| gas mass of the region using the CO-to-H |$_2$| conversion factor (⁠|$X_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$|⁠). In this paper, we use simulations to study the conversion factor and the molecular gas within galaxies. We analysed a suite of simulations of isolated disc galaxies, ranging from dwarfs to Milky Way-mass galaxies, that were run using the fire-2 subgrid models coupled to the chimes non-equilibrium chemistry solver. We use the non-equilibrium abundances from the simulations, and we also compare to results using abundances assuming equilibrium, which we calculate from the simulation in post-processing. Our non-equilibrium simulations are able to reproduce the relation between CO and H |$_2$| column densities, and the relation between |$X_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$| and metallicity, seen within observations of the Milky Way. We also compare to the xCOLD GASS survey, and find agreement with their data to our predicted CO luminosities at fixed star formation rate. We also find the multivariate function used by xCOLD GASS overpredicts the H |$_2$| mass for our simulations, motivating us to suggest an alternative multivariate function of our fitting, though we caution that this fitting is uncertain due to the limited range of galaxy conditions covered by our simulations. We also find that the non-equilibrium chemistry has little effect on the conversion factor (<5 per cent) for our high-mass galaxies, though still affects the H |$_2$| mass and |$L_{\rm{{\small CO}}}$| by |$\approx$| 25  per cent. In our previous study (Tsukamoto et al. 2023b, PASJ, 75, 835), we investigated the formation and early evolution of protoplanetary disks with 3D non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics simulations considering dust growth, and found that the modified equations of the conventional steady accretion disk model that consider magnetic braking, dust growth, and ambipolar diffusion reproduce the disk structure (such as density and vertical magnetic field) obtained from simulations very well. In this paper, as a sequel to our previous study, we analytically investigate the structure and evolution of protoplanetary disks corresponding to Class 0/I young stellar objects using the modified steady accretion disk model combining an analytical model of envelope accretion. We estimate that the disk radius is several astronomical units at the disk formation epoch and increases to several hundred astronomical units at the end of the accretion phase. The disk mass is estimated to be |$0.01 \lesssim M_{\rm disk} \lesssim 0.1 \, M_\odot$| for a disk with a radius of several tens of astronomical units and a mass accretion rate of |$\dot{M}_{\rm disk} \sim 10^{-6} \, M_\odot \,\, {\rm yr^{-1}}$|⁠. These estimates seems to be consistent with recent observations. We also found that, with typical disk ionization rates (ζ ≳ 10−19 s−1) and a moderate mass accretion rate (⁠|$\dot{M}_{\rm disk}\gtrsim 10^{-8} \, M_\odot \,\, {\rm yr^{-1}}$|⁠), magnetorotational instability is suppressed in the disk because of low plasma β and efficient ambipolar diffusion. We argue that the radial profile of specific angular momentum (or rotational velocity) at the disk outer edge should be continuously connected to that of the envelope if the disk evolves by magnetic braking, and should be discontinuous if the disk evolves by an internal angular momentum transport process such as gravitational instability or magnetorotational instability. Future detailed observations of the specific angular momentum profile around the disk outer edge are important for understanding the angular momentum transport mechanism of protoplanetary disks. In preparation for the tomography study of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) survey and other large future telescopes such as TMT/ELT/GMT, we present the results of our pilot study on Lyα forest and IGM tomography statistics using the GADGET3-Osaka cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamical simulation. Our simulation includes models for star formation and supernova feedback, which enables more realistic cross-correlation studies between galaxies, neutral hydrogen (H i), and metals in circumgalactic and intergalactic medium. We create a light-cone data set at z = 2–3 from our simulations and generate mock Lyα forest data. As a first step, in this paper, we focus on the distribution of H i and galaxies, and present statistical results on 1D flux probability distribution function, 1D power spectrum, flux contrast versus impact parameter, and H i –galaxy cross-correlations. Our results show overall agreement with current observational data, with some interesting discrepancies on small scales that are due to either feedback effects or varying observational conditions. Our simulation shows stronger H i absorption with decreasing transverse distance from galaxies. We find that massive galaxies with M⋆ ≥ 1010M⊙ contribute strongly to the flux contrast signal, and that lower-mass galaxies with M⋆ ∼ 108–1010M⊙ tend to dilute the flux contrast signal from massive galaxies. On large scales, the average flux contrast smoothly connects to the IGM level, supporting the concordance Λ cold dark matter model. High‐resolution hydrodynamical simulations are presented to follow the gravitational collapse of a uniform turbulent clump, upon which a purely radial compressive velocity pulse is activated in the midst of the evolution of the clump, when its turbulent state has been fully developed. The shape of the velocity pulse is determined basically by two free parameters: the velocity V0 and the initial radial position r0. In the present paper, models are considered in which the velocity V0 takes the values 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 times the speed of sound of the clump c0, while r0 is fixed for all the models. The collapse of the model with 2 c0 goes faster as a consequence of the velocity pulse, while the cluster formed in the central region of the isolated clump mainly stays the same. In the models with greater velocity V0, the evolution of the isolated clump has significantly changed, so a dense shell of gas forms around r0 and moves radially inward. The radial profile of the density and velocity and the mass contained in the dense shell of gas are calculated, and it is found that (a) the higher the velocity V0, the less mass is contained in the shell, and (b) there is a critical velocity of the pulse, around 10 c0, such that, for shock models with a lower velocity, there will be a well‐defined dense central region in the shocked clump surrounded by the shell. In this paper, we investigate the influence of nonisothermal processes on the evolution of the cloud's envelope around a newborn protostar. For this purpose, we study the evolution of a spherical cloud harboring a central hydrostatic newborn protostar. This model includes thermal effects due to heating of the cosmic rays and cooling of the gas and gas–dust energy transfer. We have ignored the effects of the magnetic field and rotation. The semianalytical Adomian decomposition method (ADM) is used to solve the system of nonlinear dynamical equations for different initial conditions. In this paper, the ADM allows us to follow the time evolution of the cloud's envelope and its mass accretion rate onto the newborn protostar. We find that the mass accretion rates of the envelope are increasing functions of time and highly depend on the choice of initial conditions. Moreover, we find that the nonisothermal processes affect the evolution of the mass accretion rates compared with the isothermal processes for different initial conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaia and its complementary spectroscopic surveys combined will yield the most comprehensive database of kinematic and chemical information of stars in the Milky Way. The Gaia FGK benchmark stars play a central role in this matter as they are calibration pillars for the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances for various surveys. The spectroscopic analyses of the benchmark stars are done by combining different methods, and the results will be affected by the systematic uncertainties inherent in each method. In this paper, we explore some of these systematic uncertainties. We determined line abundances of Ca, Cr, Mn and Co for four benchmark stars using six different methods. We changed the default input parameters of the different codes in a systematic way and found, in some cases, significant differences between the results. Since there is no consensus on the correct values for many of these default parameters, we urge the community to raise discussions towards standard input parameters that could alleviate the difference in abundances obtained by different methods. Planets orbiting binary stars—circumbinary planets—play a paramount role in our understanding of planetary and stellar formation and evolution, dynamical interactions in many-body systems, and the potential for habitable environments beyond the Solar System. Each new discovery holds immense value and inherent fascination both for the astronomical community and for the general public. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the 1500+ citations of the discovery papers for the 14 known transiting circumbinary planets and the dozens of related press-releases in major news outlets. This article reviews the observational and theoretical aspects related to the detection and confirmation of transiting circumbinary planets around main-sequence binaries from space-based surveys, discusses the associated challenges, and highlights some of the recent results. To investigate the chemical abundance of broad-line region clouds in quasars at high redshifts, we performed near-infrared spectroscopy of six luminous quasars at z ∼ 2.7 with the WINERED spectrograph mounted on the New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, Chile. The measured Fe ii /Mg ii flux ratios nearly matched with the published data for 0.7 ≲ z ≲ 1.6, suggesting that there is no evolution over a long period of cosmic time, which is consistent with previous studies. To derive the chemical abundances from the measured equivalent widths (EWs), their dependence on nonabundance factors must be corrected. In our previous paper, we proposed a method to derive the [Mg/Fe] abundance ratio and the [Fe/H] abundance by correcting the dependence of EW(Mg ii) and EW(Fe ii) on the Eddington ratio. To the best of our knowledge, that was the first report to discuss the star formation history through a direct comparison with chemical evolution models. In the present study, we further investigated the dependence of EWs on luminosity, which is known as the Baldwin effect (BEff). Additional correction for the BEff significantly affects the derived chemical abundances for the six luminous quasars at z ∼ 2.7, and the resultant abundances agree well with the prediction of chemical evolution models. Given that most distant quasars found thus far are biased toward luminous ones, the correction of the measured EWs for the BEff is crucial for extending the chemical evolution study to higher redshifts. This paper is one in a series that explores the importance of radius as a second parameter in galaxy evolution. The topic investigated here is the relationship between star formation rate (SFR) and galaxy radius () for main-sequence star-forming galaxies. The key observational result is that, over a wide range of stellar mass and redshift in both CANDELS and SDSS, there is little correlation between SFR and at fixed stellar mass. The Kennicutt–Schmidt law, or any similar density-related star formation law, then implies that smaller galaxies must have lower gas fractions than larger galaxies (at fixed), and this is supported by observations of gas in local star-forming galaxies. We investigate the implications by adopting the equilibrium "bathtub" model: the ISM gas mass is assumed to be constant over time, and the net SFR is the difference between the accretion rate of gas onto the galaxy from the halo and the outflow rate due to winds. To match the observed null correlation between SFR and radius, the bathtub model requires that smaller galaxies at fixed mass have weaker galactic winds. Our hypothesis is that galaxies are a two-parameter family whose properties are set mainly by halo mass and concentration. Context. We started a multi-scale analysis of star formation in G202.3+2.5, an intertwined filamentary sub-region of the Monoceros OB1 molecular complex, in order to provide observational constraints on current theories and models that attempt to explain star formation globally. In the first paper (Paper I), we examined the distributions of dense cores and protostars and found enhanced star formation activity in the junction region of the filaments. Aims. In this second paper, we aim to unveil the connections between the core and filament evolutions, and between the filament dynamics and the global evolution of the cloud. Methods. We characterise the gas dynamics and energy balance in different parts of G202.3+2.5 using infrared observations from the Herschel and WISE telescopes and molecular tracers observed with the IRAM 30-m and TRAO 14-m telescopes. The velocity field of the cloud is examined and velocity-coherent structures are identified, characterised, and put in perspective with the cloud environment. Results. Two main velocity components are revealed, well separated in radial velocities in the north and merged around the location of intense N2H+ emission in the centre of G202.3+2.5 where Paper I found the peak of star formation activity. We show that the relative position of the two components along the sightline, and the velocity gradient of the N2H+ emission imply that the components have been undergoing collision for ~105 yr, although it remains unclear whether the gas moves mainly along or across the filament axes. The dense gas where N2H+ is detected is interpreted as the compressed region between the two filaments, which corresponds to a high mass inflow rate of ~1 × 10−3M⊙ yr−1 and possibly leads to a significant increase in its star formation efficiency. We identify a protostellar source in the junction region that possibly powers two crossed intermittent outflows. We show that the H II region around the nearby cluster NCG 2264 is still expanding and its role in the collision is examined. However, we cannot rule out the idea that the collision arises mostly from the global collapse of the cloud. Conclusions. The (sub-)filament-scale observables examined in this paper reveal a collision between G202.3+2.5 sub-structures and its probable role in feeding the cores in the junction region. To shed more light on this link between core and filament evolutions, one must characterise the cloud morphology, its fragmentation, and magnetic field, all at high resolution. We consider the role of the environment in this paper, but a larger-scale study of this region is now necessary to investigate the scenario of a global cloud collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to study the state of gas in galaxies, diagrams of the relation of optical emission line fluxes are used allowing one to separate main ionization sources: young stars in the HII regions, active galactic nuclei, and shock waves. In the intermediate cases, for example, when the contributions of radiation from OB stars and from shock waves mix, identification becomes uncertain, and the issue remains unresolved on what determines the observed state of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) including the one on large distances fromthe galactic plane. Adding of an extra parameter—the gas velocity dispersion in the line-of-sight—to classical diagnostic diagrams helps to find a solution. In the present paper, we analyze the observed data for several nearby galaxies: for UGC10043 with the galactic wind, for the dwarf galaxies VIIZw403 andMrk 35 with star formation, for the galaxy Arp 212 with a polar ring. The data on the velocity dispersion are obtained at the 6-m SAO RAS telescope with the Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer, the information on the relation of main emission-line fluxes-from the published results of the integral-field spectroscopy (the CALIFA survey and the MPFS spectrograph). A positive correlation between the radial velocity dispersion and the contribution of shock excitation to gas ionization are observed. In particular, in studying Arp 212, our approach allowed us to confirm the assumption on a direct collision of gaseous clouds on the inclined orbits with the main disk of the galaxy. This paper investigates the impact of radiative and mechanical feedback from O-type stars on their parent molecular clouds and the triggering of formation of a future generation of stars. We study the infrared bubble S111 created by the embedded massive stellar cluster G316.80â€"0.05. A significant fraction of gas in shells created due to the compression of the ambient medium by expanding bubbles is photodissociated by the stellar radiation. The kinematics of the shells are thus best studied using spectroscopic observations of singly ionized carbon, the most dominant species. We have used velocity-resolved maps of the 2P3/2 â†' 2P1/2 transition of [C ii ] at 158 ÎĽ m, the J = 2â€"1 transition of 13CO and C18O, and the J = 1â€"0 transition of HCO+ to study the rim of the bubble S111 that partly coincides with the southern part of the infrared dark ridge G316.75. The [C ii ] spectra conclusively show evidence of a shell expanding with a moderate velocity of ∼7 km sâˆ'1, which amounts to a kinetic energy that is ∼0.5â€"40 times the thermal energy of the H ii region. The pressure causing the expansion of the H ii region arises mainly from hydrogen ionization and dust-processed radiation. Among the far-infrared sources located in compressed shells, we find the core G316.7799â€"0.0942 to show broad spectral features consistent with outflow activity and conclude that it is a site of active star formation. Based on the age of the H ii region we conclude that this expanding H ii region is responsible for triggering the current star formation activity in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Keck/LRIS follow-up spectroscopy for 13 photometric candidates of extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) selected by a machine-learning technique applied to the deep (∼26 AB mag) optical and wide-area (∼500 deg2) Subaru imaging data in the EMPRESS survey. Nine out of the 13 candidates are EMPGs with an oxygen abundance (O/H) less than ∼10% solar value (O/H)⊙, and four sources are contaminants of moderately metal-rich galaxies or no emission-line objects. Notably, two out of the nine EMPGs have extremely low stellar masses and oxygen abundances of 5 Ă— 104â€"7 Ă— 105 M ⊙ and 2%â€"3% (O/H)⊙, respectively. With a sample of five EMPGs with (Fe/O) measurements, two (three) of which are taken from this study (the literature), we confirm that two EMPGs with the lowest (O/H) ratios of ∼2% (O/H)⊙ show high (Fe/O) ratios of ∼0.1, close to the solar abundance ratio. Comparing galaxy chemical enrichment models, we find that the two EMPGs cannot be explained by a scenario of metal-poor gas accretion/episodic star formation history due to their low (N/O) ratios. We conclude that the two EMPGs can be reproduced by the inclusion of bright hypernovae and/or hypothetical pair-instability supernovae (SNe) preferentially produced in a metal-poor environment. This conclusion implies that primordial galaxies at z ∼ 10 could have a high abundance of Fe that did not originate from Type Ia SNe with delays and that Fe may not serve as a cosmic clock for primordial galaxies.
