Root extracts of Ancistrocladus tectorius (AT), a shrub native to China, have been shown to have antiviral and antitumor activities, but the anti-obesity effects of AT aerial parts, mainly the leaves and stems, have not been investigated. This study is the first to investigate the anti-obesity effects and molecular mechanism of AT 70% ethanol extract in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6J mice. Treatment with AT extract inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells and decreased the expression of adipogenesis-related genes. AT extract also upregulated the mRNA expression of genes related to mitochondrial dynamics in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. AT administration for 12 weeks reduced body weight and organ weights, including liver, pancreas, and white and brown adipose tissue, and improved plasma profiles such as glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol in HFD-fed mice. AT extract reduced HFD-induced hepatic steatosis with levels of liver TG and lipogenesis-related genes. AT extract upregulated thermogenesis-related genes such as Cidea, Pgc1α, Ucp1, Prdm16, Adrb1, and Adrb3 and mitochondrial dynamics-related genes such as Mff, Opa1, and Mfn2 in brown adipose tissue (BAT). A bronze wine vessel attributed to 1600–1046 B.C., Shang dynasty in China, an object from the East Asian Collection of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney (Australia), was studied using a non-destructive scientific analytical protocol based on the synergic combination of nuclear techniques. Gamma spectrometry, neutron-computed tomography, and proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) spectroscopy were applied to gain a better insight into the structural and compositional features of the artefact to prove its authenticity. Gamma spectrometry was performed to assess the risk of excessive sample activation induced by long exposure to the neutron beam and to determine the bulk elemental composition. Based on neutron-computed tomography, the porosities and the thickness of the metal wall were evaluated and found consistent with the piece-mould casting technology adopted by craftsmen during the Shang dynasty in China. Finally, PIXE spectroscopy demonstrated the use of a ternary (copper–tin-leaded) alloy and the nature of mineralisation on the surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agarwood is a resinous wood from the tree in the family Thymelaeaceae. It has been used as traditional medicine in China and Southeast Asia countries. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of agarwood pill (AP) as a supplement to enhance immune function. In this study, immunity-enhancing activity was demonstrated in BALB/c male mice administered with AP for 10 days after intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CPA). Results demonstrated that AP supplementation ameliorated spleen index and body weight changes of CPA-injected mice by increasing the proliferation of T- and B-lymphocytes as well as the activity of natural killer cells. Analysis of spleen-derived lymphocytes showed that counts of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells were slightly recovered in the spleen of mice treated with a high dosage of AP. Serum levels of immune-related cytokines of tumor necrosis factor-α were notably restored after AP administration. In addition, serum levels of immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG were recovered by AP administration at a medium dosage. Furthermore, in analysis of ex vivo bone marrow-derived macrophages and dendritic cells, counts of immune-related interleukin-12, major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-I, MHC-II, CD80, and CD86 were significantly increased by AP treatment in concentration-dependent manner. Background: Evodiae fructus is a natural plant that is used as a medicinal material in many Asian countries such as Korea and China. However, little is known about its effect on ulcerative colitis. Objectives: Thus, the purpose of this study was to find the improvement effect of Evodiae fructus in mice model with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. Materials and Methods: The animal experiments were conducted using ulcerative colitis animals induced by DSS. To induce ulcerative colitis in BALB/c mice used in the experiment, 5% DSS was supplied as drinking water for 7 days. BALB/c mice were divided into five groups (n = 8): Group 1 (normal group), Group 2 (5% DSS control group), Group 3 (5% DSS + sulfasalazine 60 mg/kg treated), Group 4 (5% DSS + Evodiae fructus water extract 50 mg/kg treated), Group 5 (5% DSS + Evodiae fructus water extract 100 mg/kg treated). After the animal experiment, the expression of antioxidant, oxidative stress, inflammatory, and necrosis-related factors in colonic tissues was analyzed by western blotting. Results: As a result, the Evodiae fructus treatment group reduced oxidative stress by increasing the expression of Nrf2, an antioxidant-related transcription factor. Also, the expression of NF-κB, an inflammatory transcription factor, was reduced, thereby reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins and inflammatory cytokines. Conclusion: These results suggest that Evodiae fructus treatment has an inhibitory effect on inflammation against DSS-induced colitis. To meet the increasing demands of the society in the current era, new strains of the domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) are being continuously bred. Consequently, cataloging the genetic information of pure lines is essential. The strain Jam 146, whose larvae have atypical pale, crescent-shaped body markings, is an important breeding resource due to its excellent fecundity. In this study, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of this strain using next-generation sequencing. The complete genome of this strain has a gene arrangement typical of Lepidoptera. The length of the Jam 146 mitogenome (15,661 bp) is well within the range reported in other B. mori strains, i.e. between 15,629 (Baiyun strain, China) and 15,676 bp (Hukpyobeom strain, South Korea). However, the total length of protein-coding genes, 3,733 codons in Jam 146 and two other silkworm strains previously reported from South Korea, is 13 codons longer than that in other B. mori strains. Phylogenetic analysis of 22 silkworm strains from nine countries showed that the Jam 146 strain forms a strong cluster with three other strains from China, Japan, and South Korea, suggesting that after their split from a common ancestor, the evolutionary divergence among the silkworm strains in these countries has been limited. This study provides a systematic review of the development of Chinese public administration in English language journals. An analysis of articles in the top 25 English-language public administration journals worldwide from 1996 to 2016 confirmed increases in both the number and significance of studies of Chinese public administration. A systematic content analysis of abstracts of previous studies was performed and showed that social development and administrative reform were among the most important topics. With respect to the methodology of this study, qualitative methods were more frequently used than quantitative or mixed methods. This article presents an analysis of South Korea’s strategic choices over the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in light of the Sino–US competition in post-Cold War East Asia. South Korea’s puzzling behavior here represents Seoul’s hedging strategy against the uncertain future of the Sino–US competition in East Asia. The driving force of South Korea’s hedging behavior is Seoul’s dual concerns about being excessively dependent on the USA for its security at the time of China’s rapid rise on the one hand and being pulled into a growing China’s sphere of influence at the expense of traditional US–ROK security ties on the other. Reflecting Seoul’s prudent balancing acts between the two superpowers, South Korea’s hedging often results in apparently indecisive and underdetermined strategic choices in the face of the intensifying Sino–US competition. Nevertheless, South Korea’s hedging strategy allows Seoul to deepen extensive economic ties with Beijing while maintaining a traditional security alliance with Washington. The hedging behavior of South Korea, which is uniquely positioned as a strategic partner of rapidly rising China as well as a key security ally of the rebalancing USA, sheds important light on the behavior of middle powers in alliance politics, which has largely been neglected in the current literature. The origin of PM 2.5 has long been the subject of debate and stable isotopic tools have been applied to decipher. In this study, weekly PM 2.5 samples were simultaneously collected at an urban (Seoul) and rural (Baengnyeong Island) site in Korea from January 2014 through February 2016. The seasonal variation of isotopic species showed significant seasonal differences with sinusoidal variation. The isotopic results implied that isotope species from Baengnyeong were mostly originated from coal combustion during China's winter heating seasons, whereas in summer, the isotopic patterns observed that were more likely to be from marine. In Seoul, coal combustion related isotopic patterns increased during China's winter heating period while vehicle related isotopic patterns were dominated whole seasons by default. Therefore, aerosol formation was originated from long-range transported coal combustion-related NO x by vehicle-related NH 3 in Seoul. δN-NH 4 + in Seoul showed highly enriched 15 N compositions in all seasons, indicating that NH 3 from vehicle emission is the important source of NH 4 + in PM 2.5 in Seoul. In addition, Baengnyeong should be consistently considered as a key region for observing the changes of isotopic features depend on the contribution of individual emissions to the atmospheric as a result of the reduction of coal consumption in China. The Sino-DPRK relationship had often been described, at least until the end of the Cold War, as one of 'lips and teeth' or 'blood-cemented' brothers. However, remarkable changes in the previously strong Sino-DPRK relations have been observed in recent years. Most importantly, the DPRK has ignored the People's Republic of China's repeated warnings to withhold nuclear tests, instead conducting them five times in a row since 2006. In response to those tests, China has vehemently criticized the DPRK. In addition, it voted for UN Security Council resolutions that imposed strict sanctions on Pyongyang. China even imposed its own sanctions against the DPRK. The strained relationship between China and North Korea is demonstrated by the fact that China's new president, Xi Jinping, has met South Korea's President Park Geun-hye eight times since he came to office in 2013, whereas he has never had a summit meeting with North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong-un, who succeeded his father, Kim Jong-il, in 2011. What has driven this dramatic change in the relationships of these two military allies? This paper argues that while multiple factors have pushed formerly strong Sino-DPRK relations into a new direction, the three most important factors are mistrust between two allies (historical), diverging interests (strategic), and growing Sino-ROK ties (economic and political). We investigated the distribution of nitrogen compounds in Han River as well as two tributaries of Tancheon and Jungrangcheon. Particularly, we observed the significant releases of NH -N from effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in two tributaries that has resulted in the increases of ammonium nitrogen (NH -N) in Han River as well as in Tancheon and Jungrangcheon. Due to the increases of NH -N in two tributaries, the larger distribution of δN-NH was observed than those of δN-NO in downstream. We calculated the contribution rate of ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen from effluent to downstream according to the results of stable isotope. The contribution rates of δN-NH from effluent to downstream were significant that ranged between 53 and 100 % in Tancheon and between 27 and 100 % in Jungrangcheon. While the contribution of δN-NO was not significant in Tancheon, it was occasionally observed in Jungrangcheon. These results demonstrated that WWTPs are the major sources of NH -N in two tributaries, which caused the distinguishable stable isotope of δN-NH . Therefore, the stable isotope of δN-NH could be a useful parameter or tracer for the evaluation of NH-N released from WWTPs in rivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid and efficient identification of the geographical origin of Angelica gigas roots (dang-gui) was performed using DART-TOF-MS (direct analysis in real time-time of flight-mass spectrometry) based metabolomics. As an ambient desorption/ionization technique, DART-TOF-MS can provide soft ionization and rapid analysis of samples with little sample preparation so it has been advantageously applied to high-throughput metabolomics analysis. In order to develop an efficient tool for discriminating, particularly geographical origin of raw herbal medicine, we employed DART-TOF-MS fingerprinting on dang-gui from Korean and Chinese markets. Principal component analysis of DART-TOF-MS fingerprints gave distinctive clustering information among two species of A. gigas and A. sinensis so that we used only A. gigas species for the sequential experiment. Orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminant analysis of A. gigas samples revealed the separation between samples cultivated in two countries. Major discriminating components were elucidated as decursin/decursinol angelate, unidentified molecular ion of m/z 247 (protonated ions of molecular formula of CHO) and another molecular ion of m/z 432. DART-TOF-MS based chemical fingerprinting with the multivariate analysis of dang-gui was shown to be efficient and accurate way to identify its geographical origin, between Korea and China. Simple Summary: Bombyx mandarina (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), the presumed ancestor of B. mori, has long been a subject of study to illustrate the geographic variation in relationship to origin of B. mori. We report 37 mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequences of B. mori strains obtained by whole-genome sequencing and four of B. mandarina individuals obtained by Sanger sequencing from South Korea. These mitogenome sequences were combined with 45 public data to uncover the population genetic and phylogenetic relationships among regional populations of B. mandarina and their relationships to B. mori. A substantial genetic reduction in B. mori strains compared to the B. mandarina was detected, with the highest diversity detected in the Chinese origin B. mori. Chinese B. mandarina were divided into northern and southern groups, largely concordant to the Qinling–Huaihe line, and the northern group was placed as an immediate progenitor of monophyletic B. mori strains in phylogenetic analyses. The enigmatic South Korean population of B. mandarina, which has often been regarded as a closer genetic group to Japan, was most similar to the northern Chinese group, evidencing substantial gene flow between the two regions. This is the first report that the South Korean B. mandarina are closer genetically to the northern Chinese group. We report 37 mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequences of Bombyx mori strains (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) and four of B. mandarina individuals, each preserved and collected, respectively, in South Korea. Although a substantial genetic divergence is present between B. mandarina in southern China and Japan, a highly supported sister relationship between the two regional populations may suggest the potential origin of Japanese B. mandarina from southern China instead of the Korean peninsula. The increasing global consumption of seafood has led to increased trade among nations, accompanied by mislabeling and fraudulent practices that have rendered authentication crucial. The multi-isotope ratio analysis is considered as applicable tool for evaluating geographical authentications but requires information and experience to select target elements such as isotopes, through a distinction method based on differences in habitat and physiology due to origin. The present study examined recombination conditions of multi-elements that facilitated geographically distinct classifications of the clams to sort out appropriate elements. Briefly, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) analysis was performed according to several combinations of five stable isotopes (carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N), oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δD), and sulfur (δ34S)) and two radiogenic elements (strontium (87Sr/86Sr) and neodymium (143Nd/144Nd)), and the geographical classification results of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum from Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPR Korea), Korea and China were compared. In conclusion, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with at least four elements (C, N, O, and S) including S revealed a remarkable cluster distribution of the clams. These findings expanded the application of systematic multi-elements analyses, including stable and radiogenic isotopes, to trace the origins of R. philippinarum collected from the Korea, China, and DPR Korea. Since the first report on its occurrence in 2010, Ricania shantungensis Chou & Lu in Korea has quickly spread. This pest population in agricultural areas has increased by over 100% each year and has caused serious economic damage in the last few years. This study was conducted to predict the potential habitat and the current and future distribution of R. shantungensis in Korea using CLIMEX and the Maximum Entropy Model (MaxEnt), and to suggest a new parameter selection method for both modeling programs. Weights of variables used in CLIMEX and those used in MaxEnt were determined using spatial association indices of spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE). Weather data of Zhejiang province in China and those of all Korean territories were compared with Climate Matching in CLIMEX. MaxEnt was applied and evaluated with 295 data points on the presence and absence of R. shantungensis and eight environmental variables that were preselected by spatial and correlation tests. In MaxEnt, maximum temperature of the warmest month, annual mean temperature, mean temperature of the coldest month, and precipitation of the driest month were determined to be the most important variables affecting the distribution of R. shantungensis in Korea. The results of this study indicated that R. shantungensis had a higher probability of occurrence in western areas than in eastern areas of Korea, and showed great potential to spread eastward.
