Objective: Retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy is challenging. This study investigated a minimally invasive approach to salvage retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: An anatomical study of four fresh cadaveric heads was conducted to demonstrate the relevant details of retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy using the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold approach. Six patients with nasopharyngeal cancer with retropharyngeal lymph node recurrence, who underwent retropharyngeal lymphadenectomy with the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold technique at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University from July to December 2021, were included in this study. Results: The anatomical study demonstrated that the endoscopic transoral medial pterygomandibular fold approach offers a short path and minimally invasive approach to the retropharyngeal space. The surgical procedure was well tolerated by all patients, with no significant post-operative complications. Aim: Species–area relationships (SAR) are widely utilized for estimating the species richness and its spatial turnover across various scales. Despite the prevalent characterization of SAR using the power law in many microbial community studies, its efficacy remains unvalidated. This study aims to characterize the microbial SAR and its mechanisms in alpine grassland soils on the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau (QTP). Location: Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau, China. Time Period: August 2014. Major Taxa Studied: Soil bacteria. Methods: Soil samples were collected from five alpine grassland sites on the QTP. Employing a nested sampling strategy at each site, soil samples were collected in plot sizes ranging from 0.5 × 0.5 m2 to 2048 × 2048 m2. Soil bacterial communities were analysed by sequencing 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicons using an Illumina MiSeq. Results: The bacterial SAR exhibited a logarithmic power law (R2: 0.952–0.999), outperforming the power law (R2: 0.701–0.852). Consequently, the most widely adopted power law led to an overestimation of species richness by up to 15.07% in areas >256 × 256 m2, and the regional maximum theoretical richness based on Chao1 by up to 9.88%. Mechanistically, the passive sampling hypothesis was refuted through the rarefied species richness analysis, and the disproportionate effect hypothesis was rejected based on analyses of the effective numbers of species number conversions for the probability of interspecific encounters (SPIE). Notably, Pearson and multiple linear regression analyses indicated that the spatial turnover of bacterial richness was determined by the environmental heterogeneity (R2: 0.855–0.999), rather or better than environmental variables themselves, supporting the 'environment heterogeneity hypothesis'. Main Conclusions: Soil bacterial SAR in alpine grasslands exhibited a logarithmic power relationship. Spatial turnover was primarily governed by the environmental heterogeneity. Rapid urbanization in China results in an uneven distribution of Urban Green Space (UGS) resources. This study aims to provide a scientific basis for optimizing the layout of UGS during the urban renewal process. This study takes Qingdao City Center of China as an example. Using the expanded model of Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area Method, different search thresholds are set based on the service scale and radius of UGS. This analysis delves into the distribution characteristics of UGS accessibility by walking. The results show that the accessibility of UGS in the Qingdao City Center presents an obvious circular structure, with Badaguan Block and Jinmen Block as the high-value core of accessibility that gradually decrease toward the periphery. There is a significant gap between the supply of UGS and the actual demand of the residential population, and 65.49% of residential quarters in Shinan District have lower accessibility of UGS than the average level of the whole district. According to the results of accessibility analysis, the optimization strategies and spatial intentions are proposed from three aspects: the renewal of existing spaces, the integration and utilization of resources, and the improvement of the UGS system. • Non-linear patterns of microbial N genes occurred along precipitation gradient. • Breaking points were clearly related to certain soil types. • Attribution of different environmental factors varied by ecosystem. Despite the importance of microorganisms in soil nitrogen (N) cycling, studies on spatial patterns of microbial N-cycling gene abundances in temperate grasslands are still lacking, whose productivity is limited by N. Here, we investigated N functional genes in soil microorganisms from 60 sites in temperate grasslands across 1661 km in Inner Mongolia, China. Abundances of all N functional genes and 16S rDNA tended to decrease from northeast to southwest, consistent with the changing tend of precipitation but contrary to that of temperature. Non-linear saturation curves dominated patterns for abundances of most N functional genes and 16S rDNA along precipitation as they increased with the rising precipitation when <288–343 mm, but remained stable after these breaking points. Interestingly, these breaking points were clearly related to certain soil types, e.g. nifH did not change with precipitation in Chernozems and Gleysols, but increased with it in other soil types. Non-linear saturation patterns were also observed for most N functional gene and 16S rDNA abundances with temperature and soil total organic carbon. In contrast, no consistent spatial pattern for ratios of N functional genes: 16S rDNA was observed, which varied greatly by different N functional genes. Moreover, decay relationships were discovered for the abundance-based matrix of N functional genes over geographic distance. From the temperate meadows to typical steppes and to temperate desert steppes, the influence of relatively long-term environmental variables increased, but that of short-term ones decreased. Overall, we revealed non-linear patterns of N functional gene abundances along precipitation with a clear relationship with soil type, and discovered that attributions of geographic distance, plant community, historical-contingency and contemporary-disturbance to N functional gene community similarity decay were ecosystem–dependent. Forest ecosystems are critical for their carbon sequestration potential. Increasing tree diversity has been shown to enhance both forest productivity and litter decomposition. Litter diversity increases litter decomposability by increasing the diversity of substrates offered to decomposers. However, the relative importance of litter decomposability and decomposer community in mediating tree diversity effects on decomposition remains unknown. Moreover, tree diversity modulation of litterfall spatial distribution, and consequently litter decomposition, has rarely been tested. We studied tree diversity effects on leaf litter decomposition and its mediation by the amount of litterfall, litter species richness and decomposability, and soil microorganisms in a large‐scale tree diversity experiment in subtropical China. Furthermore, we examined how litter functional identity and diversity affect leaf litter decomposability. Finally, we tested how leaf functional traits, tree biomass, and forest spatial structure drive the litterfall spatial distribution. We found evidence that tree species richness increased litter decomposition by increasing litter species richness and the amount of litterfall. We showed that soil microorganisms in this subtropical forest perform 84–87% of litter decomposition. Moreover, changes in the amount of litterfall and microbial decomposition explained 19–37% of the decomposition variance. Additionally, up to 20% of the microbial decomposition variance was explained by litter decomposability, while litter decomposability itself was determined by litter functional identity, diversity, and species richness. Tree species richness increased litter species richness and the amount of litterfall (+200% from monoculture to eight‐species neighborhood). We further demonstrated that the amount of species‐specific litterfall increased with increasing tree proximity and biomass, and was modulated by leaf functional traits. These litterfall drivers increased the spatial heterogeneity of litter distribution, and thus litter decomposition. We highlighted multiple biomass‐ and diversity‐mediated effects of tree diversity on ecosystem properties driving forest nutrient cycling. Forests are ecosystems critical to understanding the global carbon budget, due to their carbon sequestration potential in both aboveground and belowground compartments, especially in species‐rich forests. Soil carbon sequestration is strongly linked to soil microbial communities, and this link is mediated by the tree community, likely due to modifications of microenvironmental conditions (i.e., biotic conditions, soil properties, and microclimate). We studied soil carbon concentration and the soil microbial biomass of 180 local neighborhoods along a gradient of tree species richness ranging from 1 to 16 tree species per plot in a Chinese subtropical forest experiment (BEF‐China). Tree productivity and different tree functional traits were measured at the neighborhood level. We tested the effects of tree productivity, functional trait identity, and dissimilarity on soil carbon concentrations, and their mediation by the soil microbial biomass and microenvironmental conditions. Our analyses showed a strong positive correlation between soil microbial biomass and soil carbon concentrations. In addition, soil carbon concentration increased with tree productivity and tree root diameter, while it decreased with litterfall C:N content. Moreover, tree productivity and tree functional traits (e.g., fungal root association and litterfall C:N ratio) modulated microenvironmental conditions with substantial consequences for soil microbial biomass. We also showed that soil history and topography should be considered in future experiments and tree plantations, as soil carbon concentrations were higher at sites where historical (i.e., at the beginning of the experiment) carbon concentrations were high, themselves being strongly affected by the topography. Altogether, these results implied that the quantification of the different soil carbon pools is critical for understanding microbial community–soil carbon stock relationships and their dependence on tree diversity and microenvironmental conditions. In China, reports on the epidemiology of adenocarcinomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are limited. This study aimed to describe the experience of a single institution in China in treating these malignant tumours. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses admitted between January 2019 and December 2021. Tumour staging was based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer, 8th edition, for sinonasal malignancies. The series included 10 men and 4 women (mean age, 54.5 [range, 14–80] years). Epistaxis and nasal obstruction were the most common clinical manifestations in 10 (71.4%) patients. Ten (71.4%) had stage T4 disease at diagnosis, but no patient had lymph node or distant metastasis. The posterosuperior septum (100.0%) and middle turbinate (92.8%) were the two sites most vulnerable to tumour invasion. All patients underwent endoscopic resection as the initial treatment; one patient died. In China, these malignancies are related to exposure to certain substances; however, diagnosis can be delayed. Endoscopic resection is a suitable treatment option for adenocarcinomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: There is limited knowledge on how the association of trees with different mycorrhizal types shapes soil microbial communities in the context of changing tree diversity levels. We used arbuscular (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree species as con‐ and heterospecific tree species pairs (TSPs), which were established in plots of three tree diversity levels including monocultures, two‐species mixtures and multi‐tree species mixtures in a tree diversity experiment in subtropical China. We found that the tree mycorrhizal type had a significant effect on fungal but not bacterial alpha diversity. Furthermore, only EcM but not AM TSPs fungal alpha diversity increased with tree diversity, and the differences between AM and EcM TSPs disappeared in multi‐species mixtures. Tree mycorrhizal type, tree diversity and their interaction had significant effects on fungal community composition. Neither fungi nor bacteria showed any significant compositional variation in TSPs located in multi‐species mixtures. Accordingly, the most influential taxa driving the tree mycorrhizal differences at low tree diversity were not significant in multi‐tree species mixtures. Collectively, our results indicate that tree mycorrhizal type is an important factor determining the diversity and community composition of soil microbes, and higher tree diversity levels promote convergence of the soil microbial communities. Significance statement: More than 90% of terrestrial plants have symbiotic associations with mycorrhizal fungi which could influence the coexisting microbiota. Systematic understanding of the individual and interactive effects of tree mycorrhizal type and tree species diversity on the soil microbiota is crucial for the mechanistic comprehension of the role of microbes in forest soil ecological processes. Our tree species pair (TSP) concept coupled with random sampling within and across the plots, allowed us the unbiased assessment of tree mycorrhizal type and tree diversity effects on the tree‐tree interaction zone soil microbiota. Unlike in monocultures and two‐species mixtures, we identified species‐rich and converging fungal and bacterial communities in multi‐tree species mixtures. Consequently, we recommend planting species‐rich mixtures of EcM and AM trees, for afforestation and reforestation regimes. Soil transplant into warmer regions has been shown to alter soil microbiology. In contrast, little is known about the effects of soil transplant into colder regions, albeit that climate cooling has solicited attention in recent years. To address this question, we transplanted bare fallow soil over large transects from southern China (subtropical climate zone) to central (warm temperate climate zone) and northern China (cold temperate climate zone). After an adaptation period of 4 years, soil nitrogen components, microbial biomass and community structures were altered. However, the effects of soil transplant on microbial communities were dampened by maize cropping, unveiling a negative interaction between cropping and transplant. Further statistical analyses with Canonical correspondence analysis and Mantel tests unveiled annual average temperature, relative humidity, aboveground biomass, soil pH and NH4+- N content as environmental attributes closely correlated with microbial functional structures. In addition, average abundances of amoA - AOA (ammonia-oxidizing archaea) and amoA - AOB (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria) genes were significantly ( P < 0.05) correlated with soil nitrification capacity, hence both AOA and AOB contributed to the soil functional process of nitrification. These results suggested that the soil nitrogen cycle was intimately linked with microbial community structure, and both were subjected to disturbance by soil transplant to colder regions and plant cropping. Sustainable development goals (SDGs) emphasize a holistic achievement instead of cherry-picking a few. However, no assessment has quantitatively considered the evenness among all 17 goals. Here, we propose a systematic method, which first integrates both the evenness and the overall status of all goals, to distinguish the ideal development pathways from the uneven ones and then revisit the development trajectory in China from 2000 to 2015. Our results suggest that, despite the remarkable progress, a bottleneck has occurred in China since 2013 due to the stagnant developments in some SDGs. However, many far-reaching policies in China have been targeting these deficiencies since then, providing a perspective on how a country approaches sustainable development by promoting evenness among all SDGs. Our results also indicate that regions with the slowest progress are the developed provinces, owing to the persistent uneven status of all goals. The recent coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) is impacting the research community worldwide with unforeseen long‐term consequences for research, doctoral training, and international collaboration. It is already clear that the immediate effects of the crisis resulting from disrupted research stays and reduced career development opportunities are being most detrimental to early‐career researchers. Based on a Sino‐German international research training group dedicated to doctoral training and biodiversity‐ecosystem functioning research, we show how resilience of large collaborative research programs can be promoted in times of global crisis. We outline possible adaptations in the areas of funding, research, teaching and learning, supervision and mentoring, and international collaboration helping to reduce detrimental impact for early‐career researchers and to permanently strengthen the performance of large collaborative research groups in the postpandemic era. • Soil EEAs and bacterial community composition responded differently to drought. • Soil water content was most important in affecting responses. • Changes in bacterial community composition were more persistent than soil EEAs. Extreme drought can strongly impact belowground communities and biogeochemical processes, including soil microbial community composition and extracellular enzyme activities (EEAs), which are considered key agents in ecosystem carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. However, our understanding of how seasonal timing of drought during the growing season affects soil microbial communities and their activity remains notably poor. In this study, we investigated the responses of soil physicochemical properties, EEAs, and bacterial community composition to extreme-duration drought imposed in the early-, mid-, or late-stages of the growing season in a semiarid grassland ecosystem in Inner Mongolia, China. Compared with the ambient control, the activities of C-, nitrogen (N)-, and phosphorus (P)-acquisition enzymes were significantly decreased in the mid- and/or late-stages of drought. Bacterial community diversity also significantly decreased in the mid- and late-stage drought treatments. Soil water content was the most important factor explaining changes in soil EEAs and bacterial community composition. At the end of the growing season, the activities of C-, N-, and P-acquisition enzymes had mostly recovered, while the bacterial community diversity in the mid- and late-stage drought treatments was still lower than the ambient control. Overall, our study demonstrates that the effects of extreme drought on soil EEAs and bacterial community composition depend on the timing of drought. Our results highlight that understanding the effects of extreme-duration drought at different stages of the growing season may play a vital role in predicting the responses of belowground function to global changes in grassland ecosystems. • Gender difference in toxic metals and essential metals partly explain the difference in longevity. • Toxic metals such as lead and cadmium were significantly higher in centenarians. • Essential metals were sufficient in centenarians and likely to be used as an index of malnutrition. • Providing reference values of metals for octogenarians, nonagenarians, centenarians. • The top four important metals in longevity were selenium, arsenic, lead and manganese. Metals can be either toxic or essential to health, as they play different role in oxidative stress and metabolic homeostasis during the ageing process. Population-based biomonitoring have documented levels and ranges in concentrations among general population of 0–79 years of age. In people aged 80 and above, toxic metals and essential metals may have different risk profiles, and thus need to be better studied. Our aim is to investigate concentrations of toxic metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury) and essential metals (chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, manganese, nickel and selenium) and their role in diseases, nutritional status among younger elderly, octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians. A total of 932 younger elderly, 643 octogenarians, 540 nonagenarians, 386 centenarians were included from the cross-sectional Healthy Aging and Biomarkers Cohort Study in 2017–2018. Blood or urine biological substrates were collected from each participant to determine the concentrations of toxic metals and essential metals by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Random forest was constructed to rank the importance of toxic metals and essential metals in longevity. LASSO penalized regressions were performed to select the most significant metals associated with diseases and nutritional status, of which simultaneously included all metals and adjusted for the confounding factors. Compared to women, we found higher biomarker concentrations in men for toxic metals (41.2 µg/L vs 34.4 µg/L for blood lead, 1.56 µg/L vs 1.19 µg/L for blood mercury) and lower concentration of essential metals (0.48 µg/L vs 0.58 µg/L for blood molybdenum, 10.0 µg/L vs 11.1 µg/L for blood manganese). These factors may contribute to gender difference observed in longevity, that women live longer than men. Blood lead and urine cadmium tended to increase with age (P <0.001); blood cobalt, molybdenum, manganese increased with age, blood selenium decreased with age while the prevalence of selenium deficiency was extremely low in centenarians. Among toxic metals and essential metals, LASSO penalized regression identified the most significant metals associated with chronic kidney disease was cadmium and arsenic; and it was manganese, cobalt, and selenium for diabetes; it was selenium, molybdenum, lead for anemia; it was mercury for underweight. In random forest model, the top four important metals in longevity were selenium, arsenic, lead and manganese both in men and women. Generally, toxic metals levels were significantly higher while essential metals were relatively sufficient in Chinese centenarians. Toxic metals and essential metals played different role in diseases, nutritional status and longevity in the process of aging. • Superimposition of magmatic events led to various styles of mineralization in the Zijinshan ore district. • The involvement of mantle materials was critical for the formation of the early Cu-Au deposits. • More crustal materials and highly evolved magmas were the key in the formation of the late stage of Ag-Pb-Zn mineralization. • The extension triggered melting of the metasomatized mantle to form ore-forming magmas. Volcanic–subvolcanic rocks and associated Cu-Au-Ag-Pb-Zn mineralization within the Zijinshan ore district, located in the southwestern part of Fujian Province, represent a large metallogenic district within the southeastern coastal volcanic belt of China. This study presents new whole-rock geochemical, Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic, and zircon trace element data for igneous rocks within the Zijinshan area. Combining these new data with previously published geochronological results allows to constrain the magmatic and hydrothermal history and to understand the ore-related geological setting. Our results provide evidence of multi-stage metallogenic events within the Zijinshan district that can be roughly divided into early stage Cu-dominant (ca. 105–102 Ma) and late-stage Pb-Zn-enriched Ag-polymetallic (ca. 95–92 Ma) mineralization. Igneous rocks associated with the early stage of mineralization are enriched in the large ion lithophile elements (LILEs), depleted in the high field strength elements (HFSEs) with negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies, and have relatively high Mg# (35.9–63.5), low initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7065–0.7088), relatively depleted εNd(t) and εHf(t) values (-3.6 to −2.3 and −5.04 to 0.85, respectively), and younger two-stage Hf model ages (1.4–1.1 Ga), suggesting that the components from metasomatized mantle were incorporated. The zircons in these early stage rocks are with elevated Ce4+/Ce3+ values (358–1029) indicating the high oxygen fugacity. In comparison, the igneous rocks associated with the late stage of mineralization have high initial 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7071–0.7103), enriched εNd(t) and εHf(t) values (−6.6 to −5.5 and −8.92 to −4.15, respectively), and older two-stage Hf model ages (1.7–1.4 Ga), that are indicative of formation from magmas that incorporated ancient crustal material. The late-stage igneous rocks contain zircons with low Ce4+/Ce3+ values (20–387) that are indicative of low oxygen fugacity conditions. Besides, the late stage ore-related igneous rocks are of high silica contents with highly evolved chemical signatures, indicative of intensive fractionation processes. The diverse metal endowments may be attributed to different sources, oxygen fugacity and magmatic evolution levels of the ore-related magmas. The Cretaceous magmas in Zijinshan were likely generated under an extensional setting. The lithospheric extension triggered partial melting of the fertile metasomatized subcontinental mantle, incorporating a large amount of mantle-derived components and generated the early Cu-Au-Mo mineralization. Later, a local and temporary shift to the more compressional environment would weaken the contribution of mantle. More ancient crustal materials were incorporated in the late stage and the magmas underwent intensive fractional crystallization, leading to the generation of Ag-polymetallic mineralization in the Zijinshan ore district. • Molybdenite samples yield first Re-Os age of 111.31 ± 0.70 Ma. • Alteration type and depth control trace element distribution in sulfides. • Different trace element characteristics indicate distinct sulfide genesis. • Pyrite and digenite dominantly carry primary Au whereas bornite and digenite carry primary Ag. • The Zijinshan Cu-Au deposit formed in different hydrothermal system from the adjacent Luoboling porphyry Cu-Mo system. The Zijinshan Cu-Au deposit, located in Fujian Province, is the largest high-sulfidation epithermal (HSE) deposit in Southeastern China and is usually regarded as a major part of the porphyry Cu system in the Zijinshan ore field. Molybdenite samples collected from the Cu mineralization zone yield a first weighted mean Re-Os age of 111.31 ± 0.70 Ma, which is explained as the time of dickite-alunite alteration. Combining the newly reported muscovite 40Ar-39Ar and zircon U-Pb ages (~113 Ma), the mineralization of Zijinshan is likely to initiate before ca. 110 Ma. This result is obviously older than the Re-Os age of the adjacent Luoboling porphyry Cu-Mo deposit (~105 Ma). Pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite, and covellite collected from the deep potassic, middle phyllic and upper epithermal zones are used to conduct LA-ICP-MS trace element analysis. The spatial zonings of mineralization and alteration and the regular variations of trace elements in sulfides at vertical direction imply a potentially complete transition from porphyry to epithermal mineralization and the deep origin of ore-forming fluids. Mineralogical and trace element characteristics indicate that the chalcopyrite formed in both stages, whereas bornite is the product of epithermal mineralization, rather than a porphyry stage residue. The majority of digenite and covellite has hypogene genesis. Pyrite and digenite in the epithermal zone are major carriers of primary Au. Au in pyrite is Te-Bi related and exists as solid solutions or different-sized telluride and Bi-sulfosalt inclusions. Compared to As, Te and Bi played more important roles to scavenge Au and Ag and achieve the primary Au enrichment. Differently, Au in digenite is independently locked in digenite lattice. Bornite and digenite are good carriers of primary Ag, which mainly exists as solid solutions. The high sulfidation state stage is the major period for concentrations of primary Au and Ag. The upward increase of Au in primary sulfides of HSE Cu zone implies that the distribution pattern of upper Au enrichment and lower Cu enrichment is not only caused by supergene process, but is also controlled by hypogene trend. Based on the mineralization and alteration zonings, the spatial variation of trace elements and the presented Re-Os age, the ore-forming fluids of the Zijinshan Cu-Au deposit most likely originate from deep region, rather than from the adjacent Luoboling porphyry deposit.
