Children's preschool years are crucial for the development of computational thinking (CT) skills. However, debate continues regarding whether CT should be developed through plugged-in or unplugged activities. This study investigated the similarities and differences between plugged-in and unplugged activities with similar learning content and assessment methods for cultivating computational thinking (CT) in young children. Twenty-four young children (aged 5-6 years) from a kindergarten in Foshan, China, were randomly assigned to either the plugged-in or unplugged group to participate in a five-week study. In the plugged-in group, Dodobot was used in the classroom, while in the unplugged group, unplugged materials such as paper, pencil and tangram puzzles were used. Research results indicate that 1) both plugged-in and unplugged activities significantly improved the young children's CT skills after a short-term educational intervention, but there were no significant differences between the two groups; 2) the extent to which the plugged-in and unplugged activities promoted subdimensions of CT was different, with the plugged-in group demonstrating significant improvements in hardware, algorithm, and modularity and the unplugged group demonstrating significant improvements in terms of representation; 3) the children from both the plugged-in and unplugged groups showed high motivation; And 4) the children in both the plugged-in and unplugged groups showed cooperative behaviors. The frequency of cooperative behavior was more related to materials, and cooperation quality was more related to teacher guidance.

'Human neural stem cells' jointly drafted and agreed upon by experts from the Chinese Society for Stem Cell Research, is the first guideline for human neural stem cells (hNSCs) in China. This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, test regulations, instructions for use, labelling requirements, packaging requirements, storage requirements, transportation requirements and waste disposal requirements for hNSCs, which is applicable to the quality control for hNSCs. It was originally released by the China Society for Cell Biology on 30 August 2022. We hope that publication of the guideline will facilitate institutional establishment, acceptance and execution of proper protocols, and accelerate the international standardization of hNSCs for clinical development and therapeutic applications. The influence of continental emissions on the origin and formation mechanisms of atmospheric particulate nitrate (ρ‐NO3−) aerosols in the marine boundary layer remains unclear. Here, synchronous observations of nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N–NO3−) and oxygen isotope anomaly (Δ17O–NO3−) in ρ‐NO3− were conducted across the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea in Eastern China. Nitrate concentrations, δ15N–NO3− and Δ17O–NO3− exhibited a pronounced north‐to‐south latitudinal gradient. Combined with backward air mass trajectory analysis, the high nitrate concentration and isotopic characteristics in the northern sea area were found to be affected by the continental outflow near China while the low values in the southern sea area were more related to the oceanic inflow. Stable isotope analysis in R (SIAR) indicated that near the northern sea area, the nitrate radicals (NO3) reacted with hydrocarbons (HC) or dimethyl sulfides (DMS) pathway (NO3 + HC/DMS) played a leading role in nitrate production, whereas the NO2 + OH pathway dominated near the southern sea area. Nitrate in the northern seas originated mainly from nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2, the gaseous precursor of nitrate) emitted from continental sources, especially coal combustion and biomass burning. While closer to the southern seas, the proportion of NOx generated in the marine environment (from ship and biogenic emissions) increased. Overall, the differential relative contributions of continental and marine atmospheric chemistry and NOx sources lead to the spatial distribution characteristics of atmospheric nitrate concentrations and isotopic values over the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Soil emissions of nitrogen compounds, including NO and HONO, play a significant role in atmospheric nitrogen budget. However, HONO has been overlooked in previous research on soil reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions and their impacts on air quality in China. This study estimates both soil NOx and HONO emissions (SNOx and SHONO) in North China with an updated soil Nr emissions scheme in a chemical transport model, the Unified Inputs for WRF-Chem (UI-WRF-Chem). The effects of soil Nr emissions on O3 pollution, air quality and temperature rise are also studied, with a focus on two key regions, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) and Fenwei Plain (FWP), known for high soil Nr and anthropogenic emissions. We find that the flux of SNOx is nearly doubled those of SHONO; the monthly contributions of SNOx and SHONO account for 37.3 % and 13.5 % of anthropogenic NOx emissions in the BTH, and 29.2 % and 19.2 % in the FWP during July 2018, respectively. Soil Nr emissions have a significant impact on surface O3 and nitrate, exceeding SNOx or SHONO effects alone. On average, soil Nr emissions increase MDA8 O3 by 16.9 % and nitrate concentrations by 42.4 % in the BTH, 17.2 % for MDA8 O3 and 42.7 % for nitrate in the FWP. Reducing anthropogenic NOx emissions leads to a more substantial suppressive effect of soil Nr emissions on O3 mitigation, particularly in BTH. Soil Nr emissions, via their role as precursors for secondary inorganic aerosols, can result in a slower increase rate of surface air temperature. China is among the 30 countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide, and TB remains a public health concern. Kashgar Prefecture in the southern Xinjiang Autonomous Region is considered as one of the highest TB burden regions in China. However, molecular epidemiological studies of Kashgar are lacking. A population-based retrospective study was conducted using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the characteristics of drug resistance and the transmission patterns. A total of 1,668 isolates collected in 2020 were classified into lineages 2 (46.0%), 3 (27.5%), and 4 (26.5%). The drug resistance rates revealed by WGS showed that the top three drugs in terms of the resistance rate were isoniazid (7.4%, 124/1,668), streptomycin (6.0%, 100/1,668), and rifampicin (3.3%, 55/1,668). The rate of rifampicin resistance was 1.8% (23/1,290) in the new cases and 9.4% (32/340) in the previously treated cases. Known resistance mutations were detected more frequently in lineage 2 strains than in lineage 3 or 4 strains, respectively: 18.6% vs. 8.7 or 9%, P < 0.001. The estimated proportion of recent transmissions was 25.9% (432/1,668). Multivariate logistic analyses indicated that sex, age, occupation, lineage, and drug resistance were the risk factors for recent transmission. Despite the low rate of drug resistance, drug-resistant strains had a higher risk of recent transmission than the susceptible strains (adjusted odds ratio, 1.414; 95% CI , 1.023–1.954; P = 0.036). Among all patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), 78.4% (171/218) were attributed to the transmission of DR-TB strains. Our results suggest that drug-resistant strains are more transmissible than susceptible strains and that transmission is the major driving force of the current DR-TB epidemic in Kashgar. The light absorption capacity of water‐soluble humic‐like substances (HULISWS) at the molecular level is crucial for reducing the uncertainties in modeling the radiative forcing. This study proposed a machine learning approach to allocate the light absorption coefficient at 365 nm (Abs365) of HULISWS into 8084 Fourier transform‐ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT‐ICR‐MS) detached molecular markers and their potential functional groups. The ML model showed an acceptable uncertainty (<5%) to the whole Abs365 value based on the prediction errors. The results showed that five critical light‐absorbing molecules (C4H6O4NS, C8H6O4NS, C11H15O3N2, C12H15O3N2, and C19H21O6) could explain 74% (±3%) of the variation of Abs365 in the winter, whereas no crucial light‐absorbing molecules were found in the summer. Besides, the nitrogen‐containing functional groups were found to dominate (61% ± 8%) the molecular absorption near the 365 nm of the spectrum. This work illustrated how functional groups affect the absorption of HULISWS, providing critical information for future research of HULISWS on the molecular level. Steel and composite walls with corrugated steel plates have found their wide application in China due to their excellent structural performance. Extensive research has been conducted over the past few decades to investigate their behavior and load-bearing capacity. This paper summarized numerous experimental and numerical studies on the corrugated steel plate shear walls (CSPSWs), double corrugated steel plate shear walls (DCSPSWs), and concrete-infilled double steel corrugated-plate walls (CDSCWs). First, the load-bearing mechanism and design methods of CSPSWs and DCSPSWs under monotonic and horizontal cyclic loads were elucidated. Subsequently, this paper elaborates the load-bearing capacity and corresponding design methods including the sectional strength capacity, the overall stability, and the wall panel stability of CDSCWs under axial compression, compressive-bending combination, and compressive-bending-shear combination. The proposed design methods of CSPSWs, DCSPSWs, and CDSCWs have successfully implemented in practical high-rise building structures and some of them have been adopted by the Chinese engineering construction standards T/CECS 290 and T/CECS 624. The impact of weather variability and air pollutants on tuberculosis (TB) has been a research hotspot. Previous studies have mostly been limited to a certain area or with a small sample size of cases, and multi-scale systematic studies are lacking. In this study, 14,816,329 TB cases were collected from 31 provinces in China between 2004 and 2018 to estimate the association between TB risk and meteorological factors and air pollutants using a two-stage time-series analysis. The impact and lagged time of meteorological factors and air pollutants on TB risk varied greatly in different provinces and regions. Overall cumulative exposure–response summary associations across 31 provinces suggested that high monthly mean relative humidity (RH) (66.8–82.4%, percentile56-100 (P56–100)), rainfall (316.5–331.1 mm, P96–100), PM2.5 exposure concentration (93.3–145.0 μg/m3, P58–100), and low monthly mean wind speed (1.6–2.1 m/s, P0–38) increased the risk of TB incidence, with a relative risk (RR) of 1.10 (95% CI: 1.04–1.16), 1.10 (95% CI: 1.03–1.16), 2.08 (95% CI: 1.18–3.65), and 2.06 (95% CI: 1.27–3.33), and attributable risk percent (AR%) of 9%, 9%, 52%, and 51%, respectively. Conversely, high monthly average wind speed (2.3–2.9 m/s, P54–100) and mean temperature (20.2–25.3 °C, P79–96), and low monthly average rainfall (2.4–25.2 mm, P0–7) and concentration of SO2 (8.1–21.2 μg/m3, P0-16) exposure decreased the risk of TB incidence, with an overall cumulative RR of 0.92 (95% CI: 0.87–0.98), 0.74 (95% CI: 0.59–0.94), 0.87 (95% CI: 0.79–0.95), and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.56–0.93), respectively. Background: Previous studies have examined symptom clusters in children with acute leukemia, yet a knowledge gap persists regarding central symptom clusters and their influencing factors. By identifying these central clusters and associated factors, healthcare providers can enhance their understanding and effective management of symptoms. Our study seeks to address this gap by identifying symptom clusters, exploring central clusters, and investigating the demographic and health-related factors associated with these clusters in children with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 586 children with acute leukemia from January 2021 to April 2023 were recruited from China. They were investigated using Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale 10-18 during chemotherapy. The principal component analysis was used to identify the symptom clusters. An association network was conducted to describe the relationships among symptoms and clusters. A multiple linear model was used to investigate the associated factors for the severity of overall symptoms and each symptom cluster. Results: Five clusters were identified, including oral and skin cluster, somatic cluster, self-image disorder cluster, gastrointestinal cluster and psychological cluster. Gastrointestinal cluster was the most central symptom cluster. Age, sex, clinical classification, number of having chemotherapy and education degree and marital status of the primary caregiver are associated with the severity of these five symptom clusters. Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of evaluating symptom clusters in children with acute leukemia during chemotherapy. BACKGROUND: Ineffective effort (IE) is a frequent patient-ventilator asynchrony in invasive mechanical ventilation. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of IE and to explore its relationship with respiratory drive in subjects with acute brain injury undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a clinical database that assessed patient-ventilator asynchrony in subjects with acute brain injury. IE was identified based on airway pressure, flow, and esophageal pressure waveforms collected at 15-min intervals 4 times daily. At the end of each data set recording, airway-occlusion pressure (P0.1) was determined by the airway occlusion test. IE index was calculated to indicate the severity of IE. The incidence of IE in different types of brain injuries as well as its relationship with P0.1 was determined. RESULTS: We analyzed 852 data sets of 71 subjects with P0.1 measured and undergoing mechanical ventilation for at least 3 d after enrollment. IE was detected in 688 (80.8%) data sets, with a median index of 2.2% (interquartile range 0.4-13.1). Severe IE (IE index ≥ 10%) was detected in 246 (28.9%) data sets. The post craniotomy for brain tumor and the stroke groups had higher median IE index and lower P0.1 compared with the traumatic brain injury group (2.6% [0.7--9.7] vs 2.7% [0.3-21] vs 1.2% [0.1--8.5], P = .002; 1.4 [1-2] cm H2O vs 1.5 [1-2.2] cm H2O vs 1.8 [1.1-2.8] cm H2O, P = .001). Low respiratory drive (P0.1 < 1.14 cm H2O) was independently associated with severe IE in the expiratory phase (IEE) even after adjusting for confounding factors by logistic regression analysis (odds ratio 5.18 [95% CI 2.69-10], P < .001). Black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) is a demersal economic species widely distributed in China's coastal regions. In order to determine the differences between wild (wild group) and recirculating aquaculture system (RAS)-farmed (RAS group) black rockfish, several parameters affecting quality were evaluated, such as proximal, texture, amino acids, fatty acids, muscle cellularity, and the expression of muscle growth-related genes. The results showed that the crude lipid, amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and monosaturated fatty acids (MUFA) contents of RAS group were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than of wild group. Hardness, springiness, chewiness, muscle fiber diameter, cross-sectional area, crude protein, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contents of wild group were significantly higher than of RAS group (P < 0.05). The muscle fiber density showed a positive and significant correlation with hardness, gumminess, springiness, and chewiness, whereas muscle fiber diameter showed a negative correlation. Expression of muscle growth-related genes including myogenic differentiation antigen (MyoD) and myosin heavy chain (MYH) in wild group was significantly higher than in RAS group. Moreover, MyoD and MYH expression was positively correlated with both muscle fiber density and cross-sectional area, and negatively correlated with fiber diameter, which could be a useful indicator for predicting flesh textural properties. It can be concluded that the exogenous and endogenous factors may determine variations of nutrient composition, flesh quality parameters, and muscle growth patterns of wild and RAS-farmed black rockfish. This study aims to estimate the cost-effectiveness of the combined chemotherapy regimen containing Bedaquiline (BR) and the conventional treatment regimen (CR, not containing Bedaquiline) for the treatment of adults with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in China. A combination of a decision tree and a Markov model was developed to estimate the cost and effects of MDR patients in BR and CR within ten years. The model parameter data were synthesized from the literature, the national TB surveillance information system, and consultation with experts. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of BR vs. CR was determined. BR (vs. CR) had a higher sputum culture conversion rate and cure rate and prevented many premature deaths (decreased by 12.8%), thereby obtaining more quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) (increased by 2.31 years). The per capita cost in BR was as high as 138,000 yuan, roughly double that of CR. The ICER for BR was 33,700 yuan/QALY, which was lower than China's 1× per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2020 (72,400 yuan). BR is shown to be cost effective. When the unit price of Bedaquiline reaches or falls below 57.21 yuan per unit, BR is expected to be the dominant strategy in China over CR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multispectral imager (MII), onboard the Sustainable Development Science Satellite 1 (SDGSAT-1), performs detailed terrestrial change detection and coastal monitoring. SDGSAT-1 was launched at 2:19 UTC on 5 November 2021, as the world's first Earth science satellite to serve the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. A vicarious radiometric calibration experiment was conducted at the Dunhuang calibration site (Gobi Desert, China) on 14 December 2021. In-situ measurements of ground reflectance, aerosol optical depth (AOD), total columnar water vapor, radiosonde data, and diffuse-to-global irradiance (DG) ratio were performed to predict the top-of-atmosphere radiance by the reflectance-, irradiance-, and improved irradiance-based methods using the moderate resolution atmospheric transmission model. The MII calibration coefficients were calculated by dividing the top-of-atmosphere radiance by the average digital number value of the image. The radiometric calibration coefficients calculated by the three calibration methods were reliable (average relative differences: 2.20% (reflectance-based vs. irradiance-based method) and 1.43% (reflectance-based vs. improved irradiance-based method)). The total calibration uncertainties of the reflectance-, irradiance-, and improved irradiance-based methods were 2.77–5.23%, 3.62–5.79%, and 3.50–5.23%, respectively. The extra DG ratio measurements in the latter two methods did not improve the calibration accuracy for AODs ≤ 0.1. The calibrated MII images were verified using Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2A MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) images. The retrieved ground reflectances of the MII over different surface types were cross-compared with those of OLI and MSI using the FAST Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Hypercubes software. The MII retrievals differed by <0.0075 (7.13%) from OLI retrievals and <0.0084 (7.47%) from MSI retrievals for calibration coefficients from the reflectance-based method; <0.0089 (7.57%) from OLI retrievals and <0.0111 (8.65%) from MSI retrievals for the irradiance-based method; and <0.0082 (7.33%) from OLI retrievals and <0.0101 (8.59%) from MSI retrievals for the improved irradiance-based method. During an investigation of Diatrypaceae from southern China, 10 xylariales-like taxa have been collected. Morphological and multi-gene analyses confirmed that these taxa reside in Diatrypaceae and represent eight novel taxa and two new records belonging to six genera (viz., Allocryptovalsa, Diatrype, Diatrypella, Paraeutypella, Peroneutypa, and Vasilyeva gen. nov.). Vasilyeva gen. nov. was proposed to accommodate Vasilyeva cinnamomi sp. nov. Among the other collections, seven new species were introduced (viz., Diatrype camelliaejaponicae sp. nov., Diatrype rubi sp. nov., Diatrypella guiyangensis sp. nov., Diatrypella fatsiae-japonicae sp. nov., Paraeutypella subguizhouensis sp. nov., Peroneutypa hainanensis sp. nov., and Peroneutypa qianensis sp. nov.), while two were reported as new records from China (Allocryptovalsa rabenhorstii and Diatrype enteroxantha). BACKGROUND Epidemiological surveys on heart failure (HF) in Chinese community are relatively lacking. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and incidence of HF among community residents in southern China. METHODS Baseline data of this prospective study was collected from 2015 to 2017 among 12,013 permanent residents aged ≥ 35 years in Guangzhou, China. The same survey process was carried out for individuals aged ≥ 65 years after a three-year follow-up. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HF in community residents aged ≥ 35 years was 1.06%. Male had significantly higher risk of HF prevalence [odds ratio (OR) = 1.50, P = 0.027]. The gender-adjusted risk of HF was 1.48 times higher per 10 years aging. HF prevalence was statistically associated with atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after adjusting for age and gender (OR = 8.30, 5.17, 1.11, 2.28, respectively; all P < 0.05). HF incidence in individuals aged ≥ 65 years were 847 per 100,000 person-years. Baseline atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, and diabetes mellitus were risk factors for HF incidence for individuals aged ≥ 65 years adjusting for age and gender (OR = 5.05, 3.99, 2.11, respectively; all P < 0.05). Besides, residents with new-onset atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction were at significantly higher risk of progression to HF (OR = 14.41, 8.54, respectively; all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Both pre-existing and new-onset cardiovascular diseases were associated with HF incidence in southern China. Inorganic nitrate (NO3−) is a crucial component of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in haze events in China. Understanding the formation mechanisms of nitrate and the sources of NOx was critical to control the air pollution. In this study, measurements of multiple isotope compositions of nitrate (δ18O‐NO3−, δ17O‐NO3−, and δ15N‐NO3−) in PM2.5 were conducted in Hangzhou from 9 October 2015 to 24 August 2016. Our results showed that oxygen anomaly of nitrate (Δ17O‐NO3−: 20.0‰–37.9‰) and nitrogen isotope of nitrate (δ15N‐NO3−: −2.9‰ to 18.1‰) values were higher in winter and lower in summer. Based on Δ17O‐NO3− observation and a Bayesian model, NO3 radical chemistry was found to dominate the nitrate formation in winter, while photochemical reaction (NO2 + OH) was the main pathway in summer. After considering the nitrogen isotopic fractionation in the NOx(g)‐NO3−(p) conversion, the average contributions of coal combustion, vehicle exhausts, biomass burning, and soil emission were 50% ± 9%, 19% ± 12%, 26% ± 15%, and 5% ± 4%, respectively, to nitrate aerosols during the whole sampling period. Coal combustion was the most important nitrate source in Hangzhou, especially in winter (∼56%). The contribution of soil emission increased significantly in summer due to active soil microbial processes under high temperature environment. Plain Language Summary: Inorganic nitrate is a crucial component of fine particulate matter in haze events in China. Understanding the formation mechanisms and sources of nitrate was critical to control the air pollution. In this study, measurements of multiple isotope compositions of nitrate showed that oxygen anomaly and nitrogen isotope of nitrate are distinct in winter and summer. Then, nitrate radical chemistry was found to dominate the nitrate formation in winter, while photochemical reaction (nitrogen dioxide with hydroxyl radical) was the main pathway in summer. After considering the nitrogen isotopic fractionation in the conversion from nitrogen oxides to nitrate particle, coal combustion was the most important nitrate source in Hangzhou, especially in winter (56%) and the contribution of soil emission increased significantly in summer under high temperature environment. Solving the risk of zombification of enterprises and relieving their business difficulties, as a key element of supply-side structural reform, is the pain point of the conversion of old and new dynamic energy and the difficulty of economic transformation and upgrading. In the Internet era, the impact on business operations is also expanding with the widening of investor attention channels. This paper selects Chinese listed companies from 2011-2020 as a research sample, and the empirical results show that, first, investor attention can effectively reduce the risk of transforming enterprises into zombie enterprises, i.e., the risk of corporate zombification decreases as the level of investor attention increases; second, there is heterogeneity in the role of investor attention in resolving the risk of corporate zombification; third, further mechanism tests find that along with Third, further mechanistic tests reveal that as the level of investor attention increases, the level of environmental uncertainty decreases and the annual market value of individual stocks increases, thereby reducing the risk of corporate zombification. Introduction: Although geriatric assessment (GA) has been used for a long time in the field of geriatrics and internal medicine, there are few studies on its application in the field of breast surgery. Therefore, the utility of specific GA domains for the assessment of older patients with breast cancer remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between specificGA domains and the survival rate of older patients with breast cancer. Methods: We used the database of Peking Union Medical College Hospital to identify older patients who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer between 2012 and 2018 and retrospectively analysed the data of 541 patients aged =65 years. Patients with metastatic cancer and those with missing vital status data were excluded. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival. The GA domains used in this study included functional status, comorbidities, and psychological state. Multivariate regression analysis was used to estimate hazard ratios for these three domains. Results: After a median follow-up of 72 months, we observed a significant relationship between functional impairment and mortality (adjusted HR: 3.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.83-5.10, P<0.001). Similarly, patients with severe comorbidities (adjusted HR: 2.35; 95% CI: 1.16-4.75, P=0.017) and an impaired psychological state (adjusted HR: 2.82, 95% CI: 1.45-5.50, P=0.002) showed worse OS rates. Accordingly, addition of the three GA domains to the basic model, which included age, tumour stage, lymph node stage, and intrinsic molecular subtype as baseline variables, yielded higher C-statistics for mortality analysis (from 0.713 to 0.740). Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study to include specific GA domains in a prognostic model for older patients with breast cancer in China. Three domains, namely functional status, comorbidities, and psychological state, should be considered for survival analyses in this particular population. To evaluate the trend of notified incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in China at different periods by population and region and to explore the effect of TB prevention and control in recent years. Using pooled data on TB cases reported by the TB Information Management Reporting System (TBIMS) from 2005 to 2020, we calculated the annual percentage change (APC) using the Joinpoint regression model. From 2005 to 2020, a total of 16.2 million cases of PTB were reported in China, with an average notified incidence of 75.5 per 100,000 population. The age standardization rate (ASR) continued to decline from 116.9 (/100,000) in 2005 to 47.6 (/100,000) in 2020, with an average annual decrease of 5.6% [APC = –5.6, 95% confidence interval (CI): –7.0 to –4.2]. The smallest decline occurred in 2011–2018 (APC = –3.4, 95% CI : –4.6 to –2.3) and the largest decrease in 2018–2020 (APC = –9.2, 95% CI : –16.4 to –1.3). From 2005 to 2020, the ASR in males (159.8 per 100,000 in 2005, 72.0 per 100,000 in 2020) was higher than that in females (62.2 per 100,000 in 2005, 32.3 per 100,000 in 2020), with an average annual decline of 6.0% for male and 4.9% for female. The average notified incidence was the highest among older adults (65 years and over) (182.3/100,000), with an average annual decline of 6.4%; children (0–14 years) were the lowest (4.8/100,000), with an average annual decline of 7.3%, but a significant increase of 3.3% between 2014 and 2020 (APC = 3.3, 95% CI : 1.4 to 5.2); middle-aged (35–64 years) decreased by 5.8%; and youth (15–34 years) decreased by an average annual rate of 4.2%. The average ASR in rural areas (81.3/100,000) is higher than that in urban areas (76.1/100,000). The average annual decline in rural areas was 4.5% and 6.3% in urban areas. South China had the highest average ASR (103.2/100,000), with an average annual decline of 5.9%, while North China had the lowest (56.5/100,000), with an average annual decline of 5.9%. The average ASR in the southwest was 95.3 (/100,000), with the smallest annual decline (APC = –4.5, 95% CI : –5.5 to –3.5); the average ASR in the Northwest China was 100.1 (/100,000), with the largest annual decline (APC = –6.4, 95% CI : –10.0 to –2.7); Central, Northeastern, and Eastern China declined by an average of 5.2%, 6.2%, and 6.1% per year, respectively. Satellite passive microwave remote sensing has been extensively used to estimate snow depth (SD) and snow water equivalent (SWE) across both regional and continental scales. However, the presence of forests causes significant uncertainties in the estimations of snow parameters. Forest transmissivity is one of the most important parameters for describing the microwave radiation and scattering characteristics of forest canopies. Although many researchers have constructed models for the functional relationship between forest transmissivity and forest vegetation parameters (e.g., stand growth and accumulation), such relationships are strongly limited by the inversion accuracy of vegetation parameters, forest distribution types, and scale-transformation effects in terms of regional or global scale applications. In this research, we propose a pixel-wise forest transmissivity estimation model (Pixel-wise γ Model) based on long-term series satellite brightness temperature (TB) data for the satellite remote sensing inversion of snow parameters. The model performance is evaluated and applied in SD inversion. The results show that the SD inversion errors RMSE and Bias are 9.8 cm and −1.5 cm, respectively; the SD inversion results are improved by 41% and 84% after using the Pixel-wise γ Model, compared with the forest transmissivity model applied in the GlobSnow v3.0 product. The proposed forest transmissivity model does not depend on forest cover parameters and other ground measurement parameters, which greatly improves its application scope and simplicity. The beneficial effects of Tai Chi on the cardiovascular risk profile and the migraine trigger factors among female migraineurs remain unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week Tai Chi training on blood pressure (BP) and migraine-related trigger factors, including stress, fatigue, and sleep quality among Chinese women with episodic migraine. In this study, eligible Hong Kong Chinese women aged 18–65 years were randomly assigned to the Tai Chi group adopting a modified 33-short form of Yang style Tai Chi training for 12 weeks, followed by additional 12 weeks of self-practice or the waiting list control group that maintained the usual lifestyle for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was the changes in BP from the baseline to 12 and 24 weeks. The secondary outcomes included the stress level, fatigue, and sleep quality measured by the perceived stress scale (PSS), the numeric rating scale-fatigue (NRS-fatigue), and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), respectively. Significant between-group differences were found in systolic BP (−6.8 mmHg at 24 weeks, P = 0.02), and a decreasing trend was significant across baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks between groups (P < 0.05). The 12-week Tai Chi training significantly reduced the BP level and moderately improved stress level, fatigue status, and sleep quality among Chinese women with episodic migraine. A high time resolution synchronous sampling method al ong with determination of stable carbon isotopes of gaseous water-soluble organic carbon (WSOCg) and particulate water-soluble organic carbon (WSOCp) was realized in this research through equipment modification and method improvement. It was found that WSOCg has significant higher concentration than WSOCp and a more depleted δ13C. Both concentrations of WSOCp and WSOCg have the seasonal variation characteristics of high in winter (WSOCp=15.7±3.9µg/m³; WSOCg=42.4±6.0µg/m³) and low in summer (WSOCp=5.9±1.8µg/m³; WSOCg=25.2±5.2µg/m³), with greater increase in WSOCp (167%) than that in WSOCg (68%). During wintertime, WSOCp and WSOCg had similar daily variation characteristics of concentration, and opposite daily variation characteristics of δ13C. WSOCp had a bimodal distribution with obvious low value at sunrise and sunset, while δ13C WSOCp had a unimodal distribution with low in daytime (-24.6±1.1‰) and high in nighttime (- 22.3±1.7‰). WSOCg and δ13C-WSOCg had same distribution with high in daytime and (49.3±8.8µg/m³; -27.9±1.1‰) low in nighttime (38.3±4.6µg/m³; -29.9±0.4‰). Combining the δ13C variation characteristics with the synchronous observation results of meteorological conditions, gaseous precursor pollutants, gaseous oxidants, gaseous acids and fine particle components, the restriction factors of WSOC gas-particle distribution mechanism were discussed. The presence of radiation rather than its intensity decided whether generations process of WSOCp and WSOCg are divided, for δ13C-WSOC of two phases showed significant correlation only during daytime. Meteorological conditions, gaseous precursor pollutants, gaseous oxidants and gaseous acids restrict the gas particle distribution of WSOC by affecting the aging process of WSOCp and WSOCg, gas particle conversion ratio of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) and the gas phase and liquid phase generation ratio of WSOCp. At the same time, the gas-particle distribution process of WSOC is strongly related to the formation of secondary inorganic ions (nitrate, sulfate, ammonium), and the gas-particle distribution between gaseous nitrous acid and nitrite. Background: Initiating ivabradine in acute heart failure (HF) is still controversial. Hypothesis: Ivabradine might be effective to be added in acute but hemodynamically stable HF. Methods: A retrospective cohort of hemodynamically stable acute HF patients was enrolled from January 2018 to January 2020 and followed until July 2020. The primary endpoints were all‐cause mortality and rehospitalization for HF. Secondary endpoints included heart rate (HR), cardiac function measured by New York Heart Association (NYHA) class, and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and adverse events, which were compared between patients with or without ivabradine. Results: A total of 126 patients were enrolled (50 males, median age 54 years, 81% with decompensated HF, median follow‐up of 9 months). In patients treated with ivabradine, although baseline HRs were higher than the reference group (96 vs. 80 bpm), they were comparable after 3 months; more patients tolerated high doses of β‐blockers (27% vs. 7.9%), improved to NYHA class I function (55.6% vs. 23.8%) and exhibited normal LVEFs (37.8% vs. 14.3%) than the reference group (all p <.05). Ivabradine was associated with a significant reduction of rehospitalization for HF than the reference group (25.4% vs.61.9%), with longer event‐free survival times (hazard ratio: 0.45, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.25–0.79), and was related with primary endpoints negatively (hazard ratio 0.51, 95% CI: 0.28–0.91) (all p <.05). Several micro fungi were gathered from bamboo and palm in Guizhou Province, China. In morphology, these taxa resemble Neomassaria, Roussoella and Oxydothis. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses based on combined ITS, LSU, SSU, rpb2 and tef1 loci confirmed that two are new geographical records for China, (viz. Roussoella siamensis, Neomassaria fabacearum), while two of them are new to science (viz. Oxydothis fortunei sp. nov. and Roussoella bambusarum sp. nov.). The stromata of Roussoella bambusarum are similar to those of R. thailandica, but its ascospores are larger. In addition, multi-gene phylogenetic analyses show that Oxydothis fortunei is closely related to O. inaequalis, but the J-ascus subapical ring as well as the ascospores of O. inaequalis are smaller. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) poses a severe public health challenge in China and worldwide. This study evaluated the effects of age, period, and birth cohort on reported incidence trends of TB based on population and refined the characteristics of high-risk groups. Methods: Aggregate data that reported pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases from China Tuberculosis Management Information System (TBIMS) from 2006 to 2020 were used to analyze effect coefficients through the age–period–cohort (APC) model based on intrinsic estimator (IE) method, and converted them into relative risk (RR) to estimate trends. Results: A total of 14.82 million cases of PTB were reported in China from 2006 to 2020, showing a continuous downward trend. The reporting rate increased with age by age group, with 70–74 years old being 2–3 times higher than that in 20–24 years old. APC analysis model showed that age effects were bimodal in 20–24 years old [RR = 2.29, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.73–3.03] and 70–74 years old (RR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.67–2.27), and lower than the overall average in the groups under 15 years old. Stratified results showed that the risk was higher for women under age 40 than men and higher for men over 40. The risk was higher in urban than in rural areas under 30 years old and slightly higher in rural than in urban between 30 and 64 years old. The risk for 15–34 years old was significantly higher in the east than in other regions. The period effects showed a decreasing trend, and the risk was higher in rural in recent years. Except for cohorts born in 1961–1965 and 2001–2005, where the RR increased, the later the cohort was born, the lower the risk. The cohort 1926–1930 in eastern had the highest risk (RR = 3.49, 95% CI: 2.44–4.98). Conclusions: The reported incidence of PTB continued to decline in China from 2006 to 2020. The young (20–24 years old) and the elderly (70–74 years old) were equally at high risk. There were differences in the age, period and cohort effects on PTB incidence among gender, urban–rural and regions. Our findings better reflected the characteristics of high-risk populations, thus contributing to the development of timely and effective intervention strategies, and providing clues for etiological research. Inorganic nitrate production is critical in atmospheric chemistry that reflects the oxidation capacity and the acidity of the atmosphere. Here we use the oxygen anomaly of nitrate (Δ17O( NO 3 − )) in high-time-resolved (3 h) aerosols to explore the chemical mechanisms of nitrate evolution in fine particles during the winter in Nanjing, a megacity of China. The continuous Δ17O( NO 3 − ) observation suggested the dominance of nocturnal chemistry (NO3 + HC/H2O and N2O5 + H2O/Cl−) in nitrate formation in the wintertime. Significant diurnal variations of nitrate formation pathways were found. The contribution of nocturnal chemistry increased at night and peaked (72%) at midnight. Particularly, nocturnal pathways became more important for the formation of nitrate in the process of air pollution aggravation. In contrast, the contribution of daytime chemistry (NO2 + OH/H2O) increased with the sunrise and showed a highest fraction (48%) around noon. The hydrolysis of N2O5 on particle surfaces played an important role in the daytime nitrate production on haze days. In addition, the reaction of NO2 with OH radicals was found to dominate the nitrate production after nitrate chemistry was reset by the precipitation events. The advanced hyperspectral imager (AHSI) is the second hyperspectral imager of China, which is also one of the most important payloads onboard the ZY1E satellite. In order to monitor the radiometric calibration status since its launch on September 12, 2019 and thus provide supplementary onboard radiometric calibration, this article conducts several vicarious radiometric calibration experiments for the ZY-1E AHSI. Five satellite observations over the Dunhuang radiometric calibration site, one of the most relevant China Radiometric Calibration Sites (CRCS), were used. Surface reflectance, radiosonde data, aerosol optical depth (AOD) loading, and water vapor content were used to simulate the top of atmosphere (TOA) radiance at the entrance pupil of the satellite via MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN). Our results show that the vicarious radiometric calibration coefficients are relatively constant with the official coefficients: the mean relative differences are 5.55%, 5.64%, 7.02%, 5.07%, and 5.30% on January 11, January 17, February 12, May 7, and November 23, 2021, respectively. The vicarious radiometric calibration coefficients were found in good agreement with the official ones according to the validation analysis based on different surface types, i.e., water and vegetation. Uncertainties of vicarious radiometric calibration due to AOD assumptions, AOD measurements, water vapor measurements, radiosonde data measurements, relative spectral response (RSR) shifts, and surface reflectance measurements are also discussed in detail. Gibellula penicillioides sp. nov. and G. longispora sp. nov., two new species parasitising spiders collected in China, are illustrated and described, based on morphological features and multiloci phylogenetic analysis. The G. penicillioides sp. nov. group is sister to the G. scorpioides group, but form long penicilloid conidiophore producing enlarged fusiform conidia ((7–) 7.5–9 (–10) × 2.5–3.5 μm). G. longispora sp. nov. is sister to G. pigmentosinum, but has slender long conidia (5–7 × 1–2 μm); teleomorph and Granulomanussynanamorphic conidiogenous cells are absent in these two species. Type specimens of G. penicillioides sp. nov. and G. longispora sp. nov. were deposited in the Research Center for Entomogenous Fungi of Anhui Agricultural University (RCEF). Three arecophila-like fungal samples were collected on dead culms of gramineous plants in China. Morphological studies of our new collections and the herbarium specimen of Arecophila gulubiicola (generic type) were conducted and the morphological affinity of our new collections with Arecophila was confirmed. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses using combined ITS, LSU, rpb2 and ß-tubulin data from our collections revealed the phylogeny of Cainiaceae. The monospecific genus Alishanica (type species Al. miscanthi), which had been accepted in Cainiaceae, is revisited and synonymised under Arecophila. Based on morphology and phylogeny, Arecophila australis sp. nov. and A. clypeata sp. nov. are introduced as new species, while A. miscanthi is a new record for China. Background: Appropriate reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets are essential for immune status evaluation of patients with immunological diseases. We aim to establish the age- and sex-related reference intervals of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform for the southwest China population using the indirect method with the data resulting from 53,822 cases of periodic health examination individuals in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) of West China Hospital from 2018 to 2020. Methods: We used the Box-Cox conversion combined with the Tukey method to normalize the data and eliminate the outliers, and the nonparametric method to estimate the 95% distribution reference intervals. Results: We initially established the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform among healthy population in southwest China by indirect method (See text for details). Using the standard normal deviate test (z-test) suggested by Harris and Boyd according to CLSI EP28-A3C, which is more scientific, we found the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets should be differentiated by ages and genders since the reference ranges of T lymphocyte subsets by single-platform in different ages and genders are significantly different. Conclusions: We further demonstrated the absolute count of CD3 + T cell, CD3 + CD4 + T cell, CD3 + CD8 + T cell decreased with aging, which is more marked in men and CD3 + CD8 + T cell count, and the obtained reference intervals were superior to the reference intervals derived from the reagent specification currently in use. Penicillium polonicum MCCC3A00951 is a fungus with influenza neuraminidase (NA) inhibition activity derived from a sediment of the mangrove forest of Zhangjiangkou in Fujian province, China. Chemical investigation on an ethyl acetate extract of its fermentation led to the isolation of a new compound, 7-hydroxy-3,10-dehydrocyclopeptine (1), and 13 known compounds (2–14). The new compound was comprehensively characterised by high-resolution electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry, and 1D, 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The anti-influenza NA assay was performed to evaluate the potential biological activity. Surprisingly, Cyclopenin (2) showed potent influenza NA inhibition with an IC50 value of 5.02 μM. Besides, molecular docking simulation was performed to investigate the binding model of cyclopenin (2) with influenza NA. Objective: To evaluate the clinical performance and utility for risk stratification of DH3 HPV assay in women (≥30 years) with NILM cytology. Methods: A prospective cohort was established in Central China between November 8 to December 14, 2016 which consisted of 2180 women aging 30-64 years with NILM cytology. At baseline, all women were screened using DH3 HPV assay. HPV 16/18 positive women would be assigned to colposcopy and biopsied if necessary. Then, hr-HPV positive women without CIN2+ lesions would be followed up by cytology every 12 months for two years. In the 3rd year of follow up, all women that were not biopsy proven CIN2+ would be called back and screened by cytology again. In follow-up period, women with ASC-US and above were referred to colposcopy and biopsied if clinically indicated. CIN2+ was the primary endpoint in analysis. The clinical performance and utility for risk stratification of DH3 HPV assay were assessed by SPSS 22.0 and SAS 9.4. Results: Of 2180 qualified women, the prevalence of hr-HPV was 8.5% (185/2180), 45(2.1%) were HPV 16/18 positive. The clinical performance for HPV16/18 was 91.7% for sensitivity, 98.4% for specificity, respectively against CIN2+ detection at baseline. In four years of study, the corresponding rates of HPV 16/18 were 51.5% and 98.7%, respectively. The cumulative absolute risk for the development of CIN2+ was as high as 37.8% for HPV 16/18 positive women, followed by hr-HPV positive (14.6%), other hr-HPV positive (11.0%) and HPV negative (0.3%) in three years. The relative risk was 125.6 and 3.4 for HPV 16/18 positive group when compared with HPV negative and other hr-HPV positive group, respectively. Conclusions: DH3 HPV assay demonstrated excellent clinical performance against CIN2+ detection in cervical cancer screening and utility of risk stratification by genotyping to promote scientific management of women with NILM cytology. During an investigation of Xylariaceae from 2019 to 2020, isolates representing eight Nemania (Xylariacese) species were collected from Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan Provinces in China. Morphological and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses, based on combined ITS, α-actin, rpb2 and β-tubulin sequences, confirmed that six of them are new to science, viz. Nemania camelliae, N. changningensis, N. cyclobalanopsina, N. feicuiensis, N. lishuicola and N. rubi; one is a new record (N. caries) for China and one is a known species (N. diffusa). Morphological descriptions and illustrations of all species are detailed. In addition, the characteristics of Nemania are summarised and prevailing contradictions in generic concepts are discussed. In this study, fungal specimens of the family Diatrypaceae were collected from karst areas in Guizhou, Hainan and Yunnan Provinces, China. Morpho-molecular analyses confirmed that these new collections comprise a new genus Pseudodiatrype, three new species (Diatrype lancangensis, Diatrypella pseudooregonensis and Eutypa cerasi), a new combination (Diatrypella oregonensis), two new records (Allodiatrype thailandica and Diatrypella vulgaris) from China and two other known species (Neoeutypella baoshanensis and Paraeutypella citricola). The new taxa are introduced, based on multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (ITS, β-tubulin), as well as morphological analyses. The new genus Pseudodiatrype is characterised by its wartlike stromata with 5-20 ascomata immersed in one stroma and the endostroma composed of thin black outer and inner layers of large white cells with thin, powdery, yellowish cells. These characteristics separate this genus from two similar genera Allodiatrype and Diatrype. Based on morphological as well as phylogenetic analyses, Diatrype lancangensis is introduced as a new species of Diatrype. The stromata of Diatrype lancangensis are similar to those of D. subundulata and D. undulate, but the ascospores are larger. Based on phylogenetic analyses, Diatrype oregonensis is transferred to the genus Diatrypella as Diatrypella oregonensis while Diatrypella pseudooregonensis is introduced as a new species of Diatrypella with 8 spores in an ascus. In addition, multi-gene phylogenetic analyses show that Eutypa cerasi is closely related to E. lata, but the ascomata and asci of Eutypa cerasi are smaller. The polyphyletic nature of some genera of Diatrypaceae has led to confusion in the classification of the family, thus we discuss whether the number of ascospores per asci can still be used as a basis for classification. Background: The relationship between alcohol consumption and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is unclear. Amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been proven valuable in establishing prognosis in pre-clinical AD.Objective: We sought to examine the associations between alcohol consumption and CSF AD biomarkers in cognitive intact subjects.Methods: A total of 806 cognitively intact participants who had measurements of CSF Aβ, pTau, and total Tau proteins and drinking characteristics were included from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE) study. Linear and logistic regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of alcohol consumption with CSF AD biomarkers. We examined the interaction effects of age, gender, and apolipoprotein epsilon (APOE) ɛ4 status on the relationships between the frequency of drinking and CSF biomarkers.Results: The multiple linear regression analyses revealed significant differences in CSF AD biomarkers between infrequent drinking (< 1 times/week) and frequent drinking groups (≥1 times/week). Participants in frequent drinking group had higher CSF p-tau/Aβ42 and tTau/Aβ42. Frequent drinking was significantly associated with greater pTau and tTau abnormalities compared to the infrequent drinking group in older (> 65 years) participants.Conclusion: The present study showed significant associations between drinking frequency and CSF AD biomarkers in cognitively intact older adults. To evaluate multidrug resistant loop-mediated isothermal amplification (MDR-LAMP) assay for the early diagnosis of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and to compare the mutation patterns associated with the rpoB, katG, and inhA genes at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. MDR-LAMP assay was evaluated using 100 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates obtained from the National Reference Laboratory for Tuberculosis in China. Phenotypic resistance to isoniazid and rifampicin and whole-genome sequencing served as reference standards. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of MDR-LAMP were 85.5%, 93.6%, 96.7%, and 74.4% for the detection of resistance to isoniazid and rifampicin, respectively, and 80.5%, 92.3%, 98.6%, and 41.4% for the detection of Mtb cultured from smear-positive sputum samples, respectively. When DNA sequencing was used as the reference standard, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of MDR-LAMP were 93.1%, 92.3%, 97.2%, and 82.8% for the detection of katG and inhA gene mutations, respectively, and 89.1%, 88.9%, 93.4%, and 81.1% for the detection of rpoB gene mutation, respectively. Background: Information on the prevalence and resistance spectrum of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in China is mainly based on regional or local data. To estimate the proportion of NTM cases in China, a national survey of NTM pulmonary disease was carried out based on acid-fast positive sputum samples collected in 2013. Methods: Sputum samples collected from enrolled presumptive cases in 72 nationwide tuberculosis surveillance sites from the 31 provinces in the mainland of China were cultured using L-J medium at the National tuberculosis reference laboratory (NTRL). MALDI-TOF MS identified the species of re-cultured strains, and minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined to evaluate the drug susceptibility of NTM isolates. Data analysis used statistical software SPSS version 22.0 for Windows statistical package. Results: Of 4917 mycobacterial isolates cultured, 6.4% [317/4917, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.8%–7.2%] were confirmed as NTM, among which 7.7% (287/3709, 95% CI 6.9%–8.6%) were from the southern region. In inland and coastal China, 87.7% (95% CI 78.7%–93.2%) and 50.0% (95% CI 43.7%–56.3%) of isolates, respectively, were slow-growing mycobacteria (SGM), with the remaining rapid growing mycobacteria (RGM). A total of 29 species were detected, Mycobacterium abscessus had higher clarithromycin-inducible resistance rates than M. massiliense (65.67% vs 2.22%). M. kansasii presented lower resistance rates in linezolid and moxifloxacin than M. avium-intracellulare complex (3.23% vs 66.67%, 0 vs 47.22%) and other SGM (3.23% vs 38%, 0 vs 26%). Conclusions: More NTM pulmonary disease was observed in the south and coastal China (P < 0.01). SGM was widely distributed, and more RGM are present in southern and coastal China (P < 0.01). The antimicrobial resistance spectrum of different NTM species was significantly different and accurate species identification would be facilitated to NTM pulmonary disease treatment. Background: In China, an indigenously developed electronic medication monitor (EMM) was designed and used in 138 counties from three provinces. Previous studies showed positive results on accuracy, effectiveness, acceptability, and feasibility, but also found some ineffective implementations. In this paper, we assessed the effect of implementation of EMMs on treatment outcomes. Methods: The longitudinal ecological method was used at the county level with aggregate secondary programmatic data. All the notified TB cases in 138 counties were involved in this study from April 2017 to June 2019, and rifampicin-resistant cases were excluded. We fitted a multilevel model to assess the relative change in the quarterly treatment success rate with increasing quarterly EMM coverage rate, in which a mixed effects maximum likelihood regression using random intercept model was applied, by adjusting for seasonal trends, population size, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and clustering within counties. Results: Among all 69 678 notified TB cases, the treatment success rate was slightly increased from 93.5% [95% confidence interval (CI): 93.0–94.0] in second quarter of 2018 to 94.9% (95% CI: 94.4–95.4) in second quarter of 2019 after implementing EMMs. There was a statistically significant effect between quarterly EMM coverage and treatment success rate after adjusting for potential confounders (P = 0.0036), increasing 10% of EMM coverage rate will lead to 0.2% treatment success rate augment. Besides, an increase of 10% of elderly or bacteriologically confirmed TB will lead to a decrease of 0.4% and 0.9% of the treatment success rate. Conclusions: Under programmatic settings, we found a statistically significant effect between increasing coverage of EMM and treatment success rate at the county level. More prospective studies are needed to confirm the effect of using EMM on TB treatment outcomes. Background: China is still faced with the public health challenge of tuberculosis (TB), and a robust surveillance system is critical for developing evidence-based TB control policies. The Tuberculosis Information Management System (TBIMS), an independent system launched in 2005, has encountered several challenges in meeting the current needs of TB control. The Chinese government also planned to establish the National Health Information System (NHIS) aggregating data in different areas. The China National Health Commission-Gates TB Project Phase III launched a new TB surveillance system to address these challenges and also as a pilot for the countrywide implementation of the NHIS. This commentary highlights the improvements and challenges in implementing the new TB system and also discusses the implications for the roll-out of the NHIS. Main text: The new TB surveillance system piloted in each prefecture of the project provinces was designed based on the local information system under the unified principle of organizing patient information under a unique ID and realizing the function of data exchange. Upon mid-2019, the data exchange successful rate reached almost 100%, and the system showed good performance in data completeness. Major improvements of the new system included achieving automatic data extraction instead of manual entry, assisting clinical service provision, and the augmented statistical functions. The major challenges in the implementation and scale-up of the new system were the licensing issue and the diversities of infrastructures that hinder the promotion of the new system at a low cost. This pilot also accumulated experiences for the roll-out of the NHIS regarding the technical solutions of reforming current information systems as well as effective training approaches for the developers and users of the new system. Conclusions: The successful implementation of the new TB surveillance system in the three TB designated medical institutions demonstrated how the diverse infrastructures of the information system could be reformed to achieve the functions of automatic data extraction and data exchange and better cater to the needs of healthcare workers. A new species of the Asian leaf litter toad genus Leptobrachella is described from Guizhou Province, China. Molecular phylogenetic analyses support the new species as an independent lineage deeply nested in the Leptobrachella clade. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological characters: body size medium (SVL 29.7-31.2 mm in five adult males); dorsal skin shagreened, some of the granules forming longitudinal short skin ridges; tympanum distinctly discernible, slightly concave; supra-axillary, femoral, pectoral and ventrolateral glands distinctly visible; absence of webbing and lateral fringes on fingers; toes with narrow lateral fringes but without webbing; heels overlapping when thighs are positioned at right angles to the body; tibia-tarsal articulation reaching the middle of eye when leg stretched forward. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a new type of substance with potential health risks. EPFRs are widely present in atmospheric particulates, but there is a limited understanding of the size-resolved health risks of these radicals. This study reports the exposure risks and source of EPFRs in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) of different particle sizes (<10 µm) in Linfen, a typical coal-burning city in China. The type of EPFRs in fine particles (< 2.1 µm) is different from that in coarse particles (2.1–10 µm) in both winter and summer. However, the EPFR concentration is higher in coarse particles than in fine particles in summer, and the opposite trend is found in winter. In both seasons, combustion sources are the main sources of EPFRs, with coal combustion as the major contributor in winter, while other fuels are the major source in summer. Dust contributes part of the EPFRs, and it is mainly present in coarse particles in winter and the opposite in summer. The upper respiratory tract was found to be the area with the highest risk of exposure to EPFRs of the studied aerosols, with an exposure equivalent to that of approximately 21 cigarettes per person per day. Alveolar exposure to EPFRs is equivalent to 8 cigarettes per person per day, with combustion sources contributing the most to EPFRs in the alveoli. Background: Green tea has been widely recognized in ameliorating cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD), especially the progression of cognitive dysfunction. But the underlying mechanism is still unclear.Objective: This study was designed to determine the role of green tea consumption in the association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of AD pathology and to ascertain whether specific population backgrounds showed the differences toward these relationships.Methods: Multivariate linear models analyzed the available data on CSF biomarkers and frequency of green tea consumption of 722 cognitively intact participants from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) database, and we additionally detected the interaction effects of tea consumption with APOEɛ4 status and gender using a two-way analysis of covariance.Results: Frequent green tea consumption was associated with a decreased level of CSF total-tau protein (t-tau) (p = 0.041) but not with the levels of CSF amyloid-β 42 (Aβ42) and CSF phosphorylated tau. The more pronounced associations of green tea consumption with CSF t-tau (p = 0.007) and CSF t-tau/Aβ42 (p = 0.039) were observed in individuals aged 65 years or younger. Additionally, males with frequent green tea consumption had a significantly low level of CSF t-tau/Aβ42 and a modest trend toward decreased CSF t-tau. There were no interaction effects of green tea consumption with APOEɛ4 and gender.Conclusion: Collectively, our findings consolidated the favorable effects of green tea on the mitigation of AD risk. The groundwater cycle pattern in the arid and semi-arid regions is drastically affected by both natural condition changes and human activities, resulting in serious eco-geological environmental problems. This paper selected the south edge of the Junggar basin as a pilot area for the basin-scale assessment of groundwater renewal capacity. Assessment indicator system was first established, assessment units were then constructed, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process method was used to identify the weights of the assessment indicators. The first three indicators are natural recharge ratio, groundwater residence time, and balance ratio between groundwater recharge and exploration, respectively. Two types of environmental assessment models, including the comprehensive index model and the fuzzy comprehensive model, were used and the results determine that low-lying intermountain areas and alluvial–proluvial piedmont plains have stronger groundwater renewal capacity, whereas that of the alluvial plain is much weaker. Second, at the typical watershed scale, the Manasi watershed was adopted as the study area, and numerical simulation method was used to assess the groundwater renewal capacities of intermountain low-lying land and the pediment alluvial–proluvial plain. They are found to have renewal periods of about 66.95 years and 25.05 years, respectively. These values are favorably compared to the results of isotopic analysis, which is corresponding to 46 years and 30 years, respectively. At last, four schemes were put forward to improve the regulation and storage capacity in different segment of Manasi River watershed. The results not only provide key guidance for reasonable groundwater resource exploitation and eco-environmental protection, but also offer a model for sustainable groundwater utilization for similar northwestern districts in China or other world similar districts. Large-scale and rapid improvement in wastewater treatment is common practice in developing countries, yet this influence on nutrient regimes in receiving waterbodies is rarely examined at broad spatial and temporal scales. Here, we present a study linking decadal nutrient monitoring data in lakes with the corresponding estimates of five major anthropogenic nutrient discharges in their surrounding watersheds over time. Within a continuous monitoring dataset covering the period 2008 to 2017, we find that due to different rates of change in TN and TP concentrations, 24 of 46 lakes, mostly located in China's populated regions, showed increasing TN/TP mass ratios; only 3 lakes showed a decrease. Quantitative relationships between in-lake nutrient concentrations (and their ratios) and anthropogenic nutrient discharges in the surrounding watersheds indicate that increase of lake TN/TP ratios is associated with the rapid improvement in municipal wastewater treatment. Due to the higher removal efficiency of TP compared with TN, TN/TP mass ratios in total municipal wastewater discharge have continued to increase from a median of 10.7 (95% confidence interval, 7.6 to 15.1) in 2008 to 17.7 (95% confidence interval, 13.2 to 27.2) in 2017. Improving municipal wastewater collection and treatment worldwide is an important target within the 17 sustainable development goals set by the United Nations. Given potential ecological impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function of altered nutrient ratios in wastewater discharge, our results suggest that long-term strategies for domestic wastewater management should not merely focus on total reductions of nutrient discharges but also consider their stoichiometric balance. Mencius, a prominent Confucian philosopher in the Warring States period (c. 453 BC–221 BC) of ancient China, is well-known for his argumentative skills, including his refutational skills used to maintain his own standpoints. This paper attempts to reveal how Mencius refuted his opponents argumentatively and strategically on the issue of human nature. To this end, the pragma-dialectical approach to argumentation is adopted to first reconstruct Mencius's argumentative discourse on human nature according to the four stages in critical discussion—the confrontation, opening, argumentation and concluding stages. Under the ancient Chinese historical and cultural context, Mencius's argumentative discourse about human nature was developed in three critical discussions, between Mencius the protagonist, and his explicit interlocutors and implicit adversaries who held different views on human nature—the antagonists. The discussions were undertaken around three single mixed differences of opinion concerning three propositions, with resolution of the first difference of opinion serving as a starting point of the second, and the resolution of the second as a starting point of the third. Then based on the reconstruction, the paper elaborates the refutational strategies that Mencius employed in various stages, such as dissociation, reductio ad absurdum based on refutational analogy, and conciliation. Predicting tropospheric cloud formation and subsequent nutrient deposition relies on understanding the sources and processes affecting aerosol constituents of the atmosphere that are preserved in cloud water. However, this challenge is difficult to address quantitatively based on the sole use of bulk chemical properties. Nitrogenous aerosols, mainly ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-), play a particularly important role in tropospheric cloud formation. While dry and wet (mainly rainfall) deposition of NH4+ and NO3- are regularly assessed, cloud water deposition is often underappreciated. Here we collected cloud water samples at the summit of Mt. Tai (1545 m above sea level) in eastern China during a long-lasting biomass burning (BB) event and simultaneously measured for the first time the isotopic compositions (mean ±1σ) of cloud water nitrogen species (δ15N-NH4+ = - 6.53 ‰ ± 4.96 ‰, δ15N-NO3- = - 2.35 ‰ ± 2.00 ‰, δ18O-NO3- = 57.80 ‰ ± 4.23 ‰), allowing insights into their sources and potential transformation mechanism within the clouds. Large contributions of BB to the cloud water NH4+ (32.9 % ± 4.6 %) and NO3- (28.2 % ± 2.7 %) inventories were confirmed through a Bayesian isotopic mixing model, coupled with our newly developed computational quantum chemistry module. Despite an overall reduction in total anthropogenic NOx emission due to effective emission control actions and stricter emission standards for vehicles, the observed cloud δ15N-NO3- values suggest that NOx emissions from transportation may have exceeded emissions from coal combustion. δ18O-NO3- values imply that the reaction of OH with NO2 is the dominant pathway of NO3- formation (57 % ± 11 %), yet the contribution of heterogeneous hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide was almost as important (43 % ± 11 %). Although the limited sample set used here results in a relatively large uncertainty with regards to the origin of cloud-associated nitrogen deposition, the high concentrations of inorganic nitrogen imply that clouds represent an important source of nitrogen, especially for nitrogen-limited ecosystems in remote areas. Further simultaneous and long-term sampling of aerosol, rainfall, and cloud water is vital for understanding the anthropogenic influence on nitrogen deposition in the study region. The bamboo snout beetle Cyrtotrachelus buqueti is a widely distributed wood-boring pest found in China, and its larvae cause significant economic losses because this beetle targets a wide range of host plants. A potential pest management measure of this beetle involves regulating olfactory chemoreceptors. In the process of olfactory recognition, pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) play an important role. Homology modeling and molecular docking were conducted in this study for the interaction between CbuqPBP1 and dibutyl phthalate to better understand the relationship between PBP structures and their ligands. Site-directed mutagenesis and binding experiments were combined to identify the binding sites of CbuqPBP1 and to explore its ligand-binding mechanism. The 3D structural model of CbuqPBP1 has six a-helices. Five of these a-helices adopt an antiparallel arrangement to form an internal ligand-binding pocket. When docking dibutyl phthalate within the active site of CbuqPBP1, a CH-π interaction between the benzene ring of dibutyl phthalate and Phe69 was observed, and a weak hydrogen bond formed between the ester carbonyl oxygen and His53. Thus, Phe69 and His53 are predicted to be important residues of CbuqPBP1 involved in ligand recognition. Site-directed mutagenesis and fluorescence assays with a His53Ala CbuqPBP1 mutant showed no affinity toward ligands. Mutation of Phe69 only affected binding of CbuqPBP1 to cedar camphor. Thus, His53 (Between α2 and α3) of CbuqPBP1 appears to be a key binding site residue, and Phe69 (Located at α3) is a very important binding site for particular ligand interactions. Due to the local emissions and transportations of air pollution from the most polluted regions such as the North China Plain and Yangtze Delta metropolitan, Xuzhou is becoming one of the most polluted cities in East China. The sources and formation processes of nitrogen-containing aerosols are therefore very complex. Two continuous aerosol measurement campaigns were conducted in this industrial city during the wintertime and summertime of 2016, to investigate the chemical compositions and potential sources of total nitrogen (TN, including 89% inorganic nitrogen and 11% organic nitrogen) in PM 2.5. Abrupt enhancements of nitrogen-containing aerosols (e.g., NO 3 − and NH 4 +) were found in the winter, and nitrate became as a dominant contributor in high pollution days (e.g., PM 2.5 > 150 μg m−3). Nitrogen oxidation ratios (NOR) correlated significantly with aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), which was estimated by ISORPROPIA-II model. This suggested heterogeneous process might be an important pathway in nitrate formation during the high PM 2.5 days. The nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N) in TN varied from −1.3 to +13.2‰ with a mean value of 6.9 ± 3.6‰ during the wintertime. An isotope-based source apportionment approach was then developed using a Bayesian isotope mixing model (SIAR) with chemical compositions as an important constrain, which improved accuracy and reduced the overall uncertainties in estimations of TN sources. From this optimized model, we identified six major sources including NH 3 from combustion-related emissions (49%), NH 3 derived from animal wastes (6%), NH 3 from urban volatilization (3%), NO x derived from coal combustion (33%), NO x from biomass burning (5%) and NO x from vehicles (3%). Our results demonstrated that ambient NO x was dominated by coal combustion. Since NO x and NH 3 are important precursors for ammonium nitrate aerosols, controlling of combustion related NO x and NH 3 emissions might be an important way to reduce PM 2.5 levels in this region. Biomass burning can significantly impact the chemical and optical properties of carbonaceous aerosols. Here, the biomass burning impacts were studied during wintertime in a megacity of Nanjing, eastern China. The high abundance of biomass burning tracers such as levoglucosan (lev), mannosan (man), galactosan (gal) and non-sea-salt potassium (nss- K+) was found during the studied period with the concentration ranges of 22.4–1476 ng m -3 , 2.1–56.2 ng m -3 , 1.4–32.2 ng m -3 and 0.2–3.8 µ g m -3 , respectively. The significant contribution of biomass burning to water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC; 22.3±9.9 %) and organic carbon (OC; 20.9±9.3 %) was observed in this study. Backward air mass origin analysis, potential emission sensitivity of elemental carbon (EC) and MODIS fire spot information indicated that the elevations of the carbonaceous aerosols were due to the transported biomass-burning aerosols from southeastern China. The characteristic mass ratio maps of lev/man and lev/nss - K+ suggested that the biomass fuels were mainly crop residuals. Furthermore, the strong correlation (p<0.01) between biomass burning tracers (such as lev) and light absorption coefficient (babs) for water-soluble brown carbon (BrC) revealed that biomass burning emissions played a significant role in the light-absorption properties of carbonaceous aerosols. The solar energy absorption due to water-soluble brown carbon and EC was estimated by a calculation based on measured light-absorbing parameters and a simulation based on a radiative transfer model (RRTMG_SW). The solar energy absorption of water-soluble BrC in short wavelengths (300–400 nm) was 0.8±0.4 (0.2–2.3) W m -2 (figures in parentheses represent the variation range of each parameter) from the calculation and 1.2±0.5 (0.3–1.9) W m -2 from the RRTMG_SW model. The absorption capacity of water-soluble BrC accounted for about 20 %–30 % of the total absorption of EC aerosols. The solar energy absorption of water-soluble BrC due to biomass burning was estimated as 0.2±0.1 (0.0–0.9) W m -2 , considering the biomass burning contribution to carbonaceous aerosols. Potential source contribution function model simulations showed that the solar energy absorption induced by water-soluble BrC and EC aerosols was mostly due to the regionally transported carbonaceous aerosols from source regions such as southeastern China. Our results illustrate the importance of the absorbing water-soluble brown carbon aerosols in trapping additional solar energy in the low-level atmosphere, heating the surface and inhibiting the energy from escaping the atmosphere. Water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is a significant fraction of organic carbon (OC) in atmospheric aerosols. WSOC is of great interest due to its significant effects on atmospheric chemistry, the Earth's climate and human health. The stable carbon isotope (δ13C) can be used to track the potential sources and investigate atmospheric processes of organic aerosols. However, the previous methods measuring the δ13C values of WSOC in ambient aerosols require a large amount of carbon content, are time-consuming and require labor-intensive preprocessing. In this study, a method of simultaneously measuring the mass concentration and the δ13C values of WSOC from aerosol samples is established by coupling the GasBench II preparation device with isotopic ratio mass spectrometry. The precision and accuracy of isotope determination is better than 0.17 ‰ and 0.5 ‰, respectively, for samples containing WSOC amounts larger than 5 µg. This method is then applied for the aerosol samples collected every 3 h during a severe wintertime haze period in Nanjing, eastern China. The WSOC values vary between 3 and 32 µg m -3 , whereas δ13C-WSOC ranges from -26.24 ‰ to -23.35 ‰. Three different episodes (Episode 1, Episode 2 and Episode 3) are identified in the sampling period, showing a different tendency of δ13C-WSOC with the accumulation process of WSOC aerosols. The increases in both the WSOC mass concentrations and the δ13C-WSOC values in Episode 1 indicate that WSOC is subject to a substantial photochemical aging during the air mass transport. In Episode 2, the decline of the δ13C-WSOC is accompanied by the increase in the WSOC mass concentrations, which is associated with regional-transported biomass burning emissions. In Episode 3, heavier isotope (13C) is exclusively enriched in total carbon (TC) in comparison to WSOC aerosols. This suggests that the non-WSOC fraction in total carbon may contain 13C -enriched components such as dust carbonate, which is supported by the enhanced Ca2+ concentrations and air mass trajectory analysis. The present study provides a novel method to determine the stable carbon isotope composition of WSOC, and it offers a great potential to better understand the source emission, the atmospheric aging and the secondary production of water-soluble organic aerosols.
