The rapid development of modern society has resulted in discharge of large, heavy metal quantities into wetlands that have been continuously accumulating, causing severe pollution. Dajiuhu, located in the Shennongjia Forest District of Hubei Province in China, is a wetland of significant value internationally, serving as a model wetland ecosystem with heightened scientific research value. In this study, 27 surface sediment samples from nine sub-lakes in Dajiuhu were collected in August 2020. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the sediments were determined. The heavy metal occurrence and speciation characteristics were analyzed by an improved BCR (European Community Bureau of Reference) extraction method. Four methods were used to evaluate heavy metals' pollution degree and ecological risk. The possible source of heavy metals was inferred using correlation analysis and principal component analysis. The heavy metal content in the lake sediments of Dajiuhu wetland was from the highest to the lowest concentration as follows: Zn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cu > Cd. The average Cd content exceeded the national nature reserve threshold values, while the other heavy metals measured were below their respective threshold values. However, due to the occurrence of Pb and Cd in different forms, they still pose certain pollution and ecological risk to the lake wetlands. On the other hand, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Cu do not pose an ecological risk in the lakes of the Dajiuhu wetland. The spatial distribution of heavy metal content in the nine sub-lakes did vary significantly. Regarding the heavy metal sources in the lake sediments, Ni, Cr, and Cu originate from natural factors, and Cd and Pb have mainly anthropogenic origins. In contrast, Zn has both natural and anthropogenic origins. This study provides further insights into the study of heavy metal pollution in lake wetlands. Trepanation skulls have been found clustered in the Gan‐Qing region of northwestern China, where the trepanation also demonstrated more signs of healing than those from other areas. In this study, two skulls belonging to the pre‐Qiang people from the Mapai cemetery in the late Neolithic period in the Gan‐Qing region with trepanation were observed using ultra‐depth electron microscopy and CT imaging. Moreover, trepanation experiments were conducted to test different tools and tool combinations to investigate the trepanation technique used by the pre‐Qiang people. Results demonstrated that the trepanation openings with signs of healing were the work of experienced trepanation practitioners, most likely for therapeutic purposes. Our experiments also demonstrated that different tools need to be used to generate similar perforations, suggesting a mature trepanation procedure by the pre‐Qiang people. Although it seems clear that the two individuals in this study underwent neurosurgical operations, it is impossible to determine why that surgery was performed. • Carbon offset potentials of rooftop PV in 31 provinces in China are assessed. • Beijing possesses the highest carbon offset potential while Tibet has the lowest. • Most provinces are projected to have shrinking carbon offset potential. • Targeted policies are needed for rooftop PV development in different areas. As a promising tool for mitigating carbon emission, rooftop photovoltaics have attracted worldwide attention. This study examines the carbon offset potential of rooftop photovoltaics in 31 provinces in China. The future trends of carbon offset potentials over the lifetime of rooftop photovoltaic systems are investigated. The findings reveal that the carbon offset potentials vary significantly across different regions in China due to the combined effects of variations in climate conditions and the energy mix for electricity generation. The northern regions possess significantly higher carbon offset potentials than the southwestern areas. In 2021, the annual total carbon offset potential ranged from the lowest at −2.0 kg CO 2 /m2 in Tibet to the highest at 169.3 kg CO 2 /m2 in Beijing. The projected future trends indicate that Beijing and Tibet will respectively maintain their highest and lowest carbon offset potential rankings. Most provinces are projected to witness decreasing carbon offset potentials. In terms of the carbon offset potential over the lifetime of rooftop photovoltaics, the northern regions − Beijing, Tianjin and Inner Mongolia − rank the top three. Not only can these findings serve as reference for developing targeted policies for carbon mitigation in China, the methodology of this study can also be applied in other places to determine their carbon offset potentials of rooftop photovoltaics. Love as an important part of human emotion has been depicted in literature, folklore, and art since ancient China. However, in archaeological settings, direct skeletal evidence for love is rare. A joint burial from North Wei Dynasty (386–534 CE) was reported, in which skeletons of an adult male and an adult female were found placed in loving embrace posture with a ring in situ on the left ring finger of the female, displaying the desire for eternal love of the couple, and the respect to their love by people who buried them as well. It is likely that the wife sacrificed herself to be buried with her dead husband, though other scenarios could not be ruled out. The free expression and active pursuit of love in Chinese culture became prominent during the first millennium. This funerary practice might have been influenced by the customs from the Western Regions and beyond through the Silk Roads and the Sinicization and assimilation of the Xianbei people. This discovery is a unique display of human emotion of love in a burial, offering a rare glimpse people's views towards love, life, death, and afterlife in northern China during a time of intense cultural and ethnic exchange. The role of the CEO in an enterprise's management decisions renders their individual characteristics influential in decisions about mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Personal characteristics are based on many aspects, therefore, we provide a multi-angle insight into the personal characteristics of managers. Drawing on the upper echelons theory, we examine whether CEOs' proactive personality affects merger and acquisition decisions. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is performed using a sample of 64 listed firms in China for the period 2010–2019. There are three solutions for cross-industry mergers, and five for intra-industry mergers. The results suggest that: (a) proactive and overconfident CEOs are inclined toward cross-industry mergers; (b) non-proactive and low-educated CEOs are inclined toward intra-industry mergers; (c) emerging industry enterprises tend to choose intra-industry mergers; (d) overconfident CEOs are more likely to undertake cross-industry mergers in traditional industries. Bone defect in the mandible due to developmental defects, trauma, or diseases is common. However, large scale of mandibular bone atrophy induced by long‐term pressure is rare. This study reported a mandibular anomaly, possibly a secondary lesion, from a Bronze Age adult male excavated from the Dunping cemetery during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770–256 BCE), Zhang County, Gansu Province, China. The defect presents as an absence of bone mass at the angle of inferior lingual aspect of the mandibular corpus, incorporating the gonial angle of the mandible on the left side. Overall profile of the defect was assessed using morphological observations of the mandible, accompanied by computed tomography (CT) imaging and panoramic dental X‐ray images of the jaws used to assist with the diagnosis. There were no signs of trauma, osteogenic neoplasms, or osteolytic lesions. Pressure resorption, a Stafne defect, was postulated as the primary cause of bone atrophy due to a long‐term lesion of the neighboring submandibular gland, namely, chronic sialadenitis or a benign neoplasm pleomorphic adenoma. This is for the first reported case of a mandible anomaly as such identified from ancient China. Objectives: Violence affected daily life in prehistoric societies, especially at conflict zones where different peoples fought over resources and for other reasons. In this study, cranial trauma was analyzed to discuss the pattern of violence experienced by three Bronze to early Iron Age populations (1,000–100 BCE) that belonged to the Subeixi culture. These populations lived in the Turpan Basin, a conflict zone in the middle of the Eurasian Steppe. Methods: The injuries on 129 complete crania unearthed from the Subeixi cemeteries were examined for crude prevalence rate (CPR), trauma type, time of occurrence, possible weapon, and direction of the blow. Thirty‐three injuries identified from poorly preserved crania were also included in the analyses except for the CPR. Data was also compared between the samples and with four other populations that had violence‐related backgrounds. Results: Overall, 16.3% (21/129) of the individuals showed violence‐induced traumatic lesions. Results also indicated that most of the injuries were perimortem (81.6%), and that women and children were more involved in conflict than the other comparative populations. Wounds from weapons accounted for 42.1% of the identified cranial injuries. Distribution analysis suggested no dominant handedness of the attackers, and that blows came from all directions including the top (17.1%). Wounds caused by arrowheads and a special type of battle‐ax popular in middle and eastern Eurasian Steppe were also recognized. Discussion: A comprehensive analysis of the skeletal evidence, historical records, and archeological background would suggest that the raiding to be the most possible conflict pattern reflected by the samples. The attackers were likely to have been nomadic invaders from the steppe (such as the Xiongnu from historical records), who attacked the residents in the basin more likely for their resources rather than territory or labor force. Increasing building constructions have become one of the fastest-growing drivers of carbon emissions. Energy conservation and carbon reduction in buildings have become increasingly crucial in the context of global carbon neutrality. This paper assesses the annual total energy and carbon embodied in the ten most intensively used building materials in China, aiming to find potential CO 2 reduction opportunities in the construction industry from a macroscopic perspective. The results show that: (1) the embodied energy and carbon of cement, steel, and brick account for more than 70% of the total embodied energy and carbon of all building materials; (2) differences in the embodied energy and carbon between steel-concrete buildings and brick-concrete buildings are not distinct; (3) disparities in the embodied energy and carbon of building materials between different regions are significant. The eastern and south-eastern regions consume excessive building materials and embody significantly higher energy and carbon than other regions. Several strategies are provided for China's building sector in energy and carbon reduction. • We analyse the annual total energy and carbon emissions embodied in building materials in China. • Embodied energy and carbon between steel-concrete buildings and brick-concrete buildings are analysed. • We find significant disparities in embodied energy and carbon among different regions. • Potential opportunities to reduce carbon emissions are highlighted. This article links the redevelopment of urban villages in China to the discourse on incremental housing schemes. Urban villages, due to the less regulated and more informal aspect of China's rapid urbanisation, house a large share of the migrant population. Current urban village redevelopment debates focus on state-initiated redevelopment, which involves large-scale demolitions and has become the norm in Beijing. The aim of this article is to make visible an alternative, village-initiated approach to redevelopment that is managed by the local village committee and that allows for incrementality and flexibility in a long-term transformation. This research traces the redevelopment process and subsequent transformation of Maquanying village over a period of more than 20 years. It focuses on the related decision-making and negotiation processes, and on socio-spatial changes during this time. In the context of the debate on incremental housing, the Maquanying approach can be understood as a locally initiated sites-and-services scheme within the Chinese environment. Both indigenous villagers and migrants are included and compared with other urban villages, higher standards of housing are delivered. Objectives: Divided zygoma (DZ) occurs in contemporaneous human populations, with the highest incidences in people from East Asia and Southern Africa. The present study examines the prevalence and variation of this condition in the Holocene populations of Northern China for the first time. Methods: In this study, 1145 skulls from various human populations living in Northern China from the Neolithic Age to recent dynasties (5000‐300 years BP) were examined. Specifically, cranial measurements and a CT scan were conducted to quantify craniofacial morphology. Results: Fifteen skulls were identified with DZ, revealing an overall prevalence of 1.3% in the collection, while it was determined to be higher in North Asian and Northeast Asian regional groups. In skulls with unilateral DZ, the superior division of the zygoma was generally slender, while the inferior division of the zygoma was more robust. In skulls with bilateral DZ, the maxillae were generally more laterally extended. Moreover, unilateral DZ skulls displayed differences in cortical bone thickness between two sides of the facial skeleton. Discussion: In context, the distribution pattern within these data points toward a greater prevalence of the DZ phenotype in North and Northeast Asian regional groups, suggesting a hypothesis that the DZ trait is more frequent in populations characterized by flat and broad faces. Accordingly, further studies into the DZ condition will deepen our understanding of developments in plasticity, variation, and recent evolution of the human cranium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fluid velocity sensitivity (FVS) effect in coal reservoirs affects the production of coalbed methane (CBM) wells by generation of coal fines. In this work, coal samples from Baode Block, northeastern Ordos Basin were made into coal cores for FVS analysis under different initial permeabilities, injection volumes and injection intensities. Standard brine with a mineralization degree of 8% (the mass ratio of NaCl: CaCl 2 : MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O=7.0:0.6:0.4) was chosen as the driving fluid. Also, the production responses of CBM wells to FVS at different stages of drainage were discussed. The results show that there is a critical flow velocity for the generation of coal fines. Below this critical flow velocity, coal fines can discharge with fluid, which increases the reservoir permeability. Over this critical flow velocity, FVS tends to occur in coal reservoirs, which blocks the effective seepage paths and reduces reservoir permeability. Additionally, the larger the flow velocity and injection volume are, the greater the permeability damage rate is. But the increasing rate of permeability damage slows down, revealing that the damage of FVS to permeability mainly occurs in the initial period of coal fines migration. Moreover, abrupt increase of flow velocity can damage reservoirs and give rise to massive coal fines generation. During the drainage process of CBM wells, the FVS effect is mainly affected by the dropping rate of working fluid level at the stage of single-phase water. There exists a period of massive coal fines generation when the working fluid level first drops near the coal seam. In the stage of two-phase gas and water, the deposition rate of coal fines is faster and the migration distance is shorter than that in the stage of single-phase water. Due to the difficulty of coal fines discharge, the FVS effect tends to occur in this stage. In the stage of single-phase gas, the gas flow can make coal fines agitate partially. But the FVS effect is relatively weak as coal matrix shrinkage can improve the reservoir permeability to a large degree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have been associated with various adverse health conditions. Herein we explored the associations of PCBs with dyslipidemia and further assessed the modification effect of genetic susceptibility and lifestyle factors. Six serum PCBs (PCB-28, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) were determined in 3845 participants from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. Dyslipidemia, including hyper-total cholesterol (HyperTC), hyper-triglyceride (HyperTG), hyper-low density lipoprotein cholesterol (HyperLDL-C), and hypo-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HypoHDL-C) were determined, and lipid-specific polygenic risk scores (PRS) and healthy lifestyle score were constructed. We found that all six PCB congeners were positively associated with the prevalence of dyslipidemias, and ΣPCB level was associated with HyperTC, HyperTG, and HyperLDL-C in dose-response manners. Compared with the lowest tertiles of ΣPCB, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the highest tertiles were 1.490 (1.258, 1.765) for HyperTC, 1.957 (1.623, 2.365) for HyperTG, and 1.569 (1.316, 1.873) for HyperLDL-C, respectively. Compared with those with low ΣPCB, healthy lifestyle, and low genetic risk, participants with high ΣPCB, unfavorable lifestyle, and high genetic risk had the highest odds of HyperTC, HyperTG, and HyperLDL-C. Introduction: Influenza has been linked to the crowding in emergency departments (ED) across the world. The impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on China EDs has been quite different from those during past influenza outbreaks. Our objective was to determine if COVID-19 changed ED visit disease severity during the pandemic., Methods: This was a retrospective cross sectional study conducted in Nanjing, China. We captured ED visit data from 28 hospitals. We then compared visit numbers from October 2019 to February 2020 for a month-to-month analysis and every February from 2017 to 2020 for a year-to-year analysis. Inter-group chi-square test and time series trend tests were performed to compare visit numbers. The primary outcome was the proportion of severe disease visits in the EDs., Results: Through February 29 th 2020, there were 93 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in Nanjing, of which 40 cases (43.01%) were first seen in the ED. The total number of ED visits in Nanjing in February 2020, were dramatically decreased (n = 99,949) in compared to January 2020 (n = 313,125) and February 2019 (n = 262,503). Except for poisoning, the severe diseases in EDs all decreased in absolute number, but increased in proportion both in year-to-year and month-to-month analyses. This increase in proportional ED disease severity was greater in higher-level referral hospitals when compared year by year., Conclusion: The COVID-19 outbreak has been associated with decreases in ED visits in Nanjing, China, but increases in the proportion of severe ED visits., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. In response to COVID-19 that has constituted a global pandemic, countries around the world have successively adopted a myriad of prevention and control measures. As the first country with the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chinese government has adopted a series of timely and strict prevention and control measures against the spread of the SARS-CoV-2, which has effectively slowed down the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 and created a valuable window for the international community to overcome the epidemic. China's experience in combating the COVID-19 has shown that building a community prevention and control system is essential to control the spread of coronavirus. As the backbone of the epidemic prevention and control system, the community prevention and control system plays an important role in improving the pattern of disorderly medical treatment, screening suspected patients, preventing the input of pathogens, ensuring residents' medical needs, stabilizing public sentiment, reducing disease fear, and maintaining residents' national security. At the same time, it also exposed the problems of the community prevention and control epidemic system in terms of infrastructure, human resources, and internal systems. Based on this, this article suggests that we should improve the hardware facilities of community, improve the internal mechanism of the community, strengthen the stability of the community talent team, improve the level of linkage between the community and other departments to prevent and control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, effectively use information technology and actively mobilize social forces to help community prevention and control COVID-19., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Background: Chronic diseases associated with diabetes threaten the health of Chinese people and contribute to poverty., Methods: Medical service utilization records of 78 124 visits by outpatients with diabetes to medical institutions in China's eastern region between 2013 and 2015 were randomly selected from the Medical Insurance Department (MID) database. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the average total per-visit, out-of-pocket (OOP), and medical insurance (MI) fund expenses between variables. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify possible risk factors affecting total per-visit medical expenses., Results: Average total per-visit medical expenses were 244.59, 285.56, and 435.33 yuan in primary, secondary, and tertiary medical institutions, respectively. Significant differences were found for average total per-visit medical expenses by year of visit, age, type of medical insurance, and levels of medical institutions. No significant differences were found for average total per-visit medical expenses by gender., Conclusion: The functions of medical networks at all levels should be clarified and the Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI) reimbursement ratio improved to ensure equal access to medical services irrespective of medical insurance type. Background: As an important means through which to promote Chinese health care reform, the family doctor policy has attracted attention from various fields. This study aimed to explore the factors influencing residents' decision to sign with family doctors, with a view to informing the changes necessary to encourage additional residents to do so, thereby enhancing the efficacy of primary health care system reform., Methods: The residents of five communities in Xianning, Hubei Province, were selected, by convenience sampling, to participate in the study. We developed and administered a questionnaire to collect data, from which we obtained 725 valid response sets. Socio-demographic characteristics were summarized using descriptive statistics; and Pearson chi-squared test and binary logistic regression were performed to identify the factors influencing residents' decision to sign with family doctors., Results: We found that the factors influencing residents' decision to sign include their education level, medical insurance, chronic diseases, medical treatment habits, awareness of the family doctor policy, perception of the medical skills of family doctors, and attitudes towards family doctors' signing services (P < .05)., Conclusion: To encourage more residents to sign with family doctors, we recommend the implementation of the following: increasing publicity for the family doctor policy, promoting the reasonable distribution of high-quality resources, augmenting the standard of general medical education, and improving the skills and competencies of family doctors., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)
