As the most-studied form of leadership across disciplines in both Western and Chinese contexts, transformational school leadership has the potential to suit diverse national and cultural contexts. Given the growing evidence showing the positive effects of transformational leadership on various school outcomes as it relates to school environment, teacher and student achievement, we wanted to explore the factors that gave rise to transformational leadership. The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the antecedents fostering transformational leadership in the contexts of both the United States and China. This paper reviews and discusses the empirical studies of the last two decades, concentrating on the variables that are antecedent to transformational leadership mainly in the educational context, but also in public management, business and psychology. Results show that transformational leadership is related to three sets of antecedents, which include: (1) the leader's qualities (e.g., self-efficacy, values, traits, emotional intelligence); (2) organizational features (e.g., organization fairness); and (3) the leader's colleagues' characteristics (e.g., follower's initial developmental level). Some antecedents were common to both contexts, while other antecedents appeared to be national context specific. The implications of the findings for future research and leader preparation in different national contexts are discussed.

A local long-lived convective system developed at midnight over inland South China, producing record-breaking rainfall in Guangzhou on 7 May 2017. This study examines the physical processes responsible for nocturnal convection initiation (CI) and growth. Observational analyses show that the CI occurs in the warm sector under weakly forced synoptic conditions at 500 hPa, while moderate but nocturnally enhanced low-level southeasterlies with a mesoscale moist tongue at 925 hPa intrude inland from the northern South China Sea. Convection-permitting model results show that mesoscale low-level convergence and increased moisture at the leading edge of the southeasterlies are favorable for CI dynamically and thermodynamically. Local ascent and potential instability are further enhanced by orographic lifting and warm moist air from the urban surface, respectively, which trigger convection in northern Guangzhou. The mesoscale moist tongue of southeasterly flows then meets convectively generated outflows, thereby maintaining strong updrafts and continuously triggering back-building convective cells in eastern Guangzhou. Sensitivity tests are conducted to estimate the relative roles of ambient southeasterly moist tongue and urban thermal effects. The southeasterly moist tongue provides moisture that is crucial for CI, while warm moist air from the urban surface is lifted at the leading edge of the southeasterlies and locally facilitates convection. Therefore, the mesoscale processes of lifting and moistening due to nocturnal southeasterlies and their strong interaction with the local factors (orographic lifting, urban heating, and cold-pool-related ascent) provide the sustained lifting and instability crucial for triggering the local long-lived convective systems. In vegetable production, Chinese cabbage can readily accumulate cadmium (Cd) into its edible parts and exceed food safety standards. However, there are still some ecotypes that respond differently to cadmium stress. This study aimed to investigate the differences of Cd-induced (0, 10, 50, 100, 200 µM) response under hydroponic culture between two Chinese cabbage ecotypes which were promoted in northeastern China from the characteristics of biomass, uptake kinetic, accumulation, and initial oxidative stress. In this paper, it was confirmed that Jinfeng (JF) was a Cd-tolerant cultivar and had low Cd accumulation in edible part, while Qiutian (QT) was Cd-sensitive, exhibiting a faster Cd uptake rate but lacking effective Cd detoxication mechanisms, and was severely damaged by 10 µM Cd treatment. Conversely, even at a high Cd concentration of 200 µM, Jinfeng had weaker biomass inhibition, lower root Cd affinity, more difficult root-to-leaf translocation, and stronger antioxidant enzyme activity than Qiutian. In conclusion, Jinfeng can endure mild Cd stress (<10 µM), and Qiutian can be used as a Cd indicator. This study provides reliable materials and related data support for vegetable production in areas with mild Cd pollution. Novelty statement: This work further investigates the unique features of low-Cd accumulator in Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) seedlings as an interesting material for vegetable production in areas with mild Cd pollution. It also explains the differences between Cd-tolerant and Cd-sensitive cultivars under different cadmium stress levels and how these differences can alter their response. With the increase of Cd concentration, Cd-tolerant cultivars compared to Cd-sensitive cultivars showed less biomass decrease, lower accumulation, lower TF, more chemically stable Cd in roots and more active antioxidant enzymes under the same Cd stress level. With the development of seedlings, the uptake of Cd in roots and the translocation to the leaves were effectively restricted by the poor Cd affinity of roots, the conversion of Cd chemical forms and the promotion of antioxidase activities, in a Cd-tolerant low accumulator, Jinfeng. Study Question: Can whole genome sequencing (WGS) offer a relatively cost-effective approach for embryonic genome-wide haplotyping and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) for monogenic disorders (PGT-M), aneuploidy (PGT-A) and structural rearrangements (PGT-SR)?Summary Answer: Reliable genome-wide haplotyping, PGT-M, PGT-A and PGT-SR could be performed by WGS with 10× depth of parental and 4× depth of embryonic sequencing data.What Is Known Already: Reduced representation genome sequencing with a genome-wide next-generation sequencing haplarithmisis-based solution has been verified as a generic approach for automated haplotyping and comprehensive PGT. Several low-depth massively parallel sequencing (MPS)-based methods for haplotyping and comprehensive PGT have been developed. However, an additional family member, such as a sibling, or a proband, is required for PGT-M haplotyping using low-depth MPS methods.Study Design, Size, Duration: In this study, 10 families that had undergone traditional IVF-PGT and 53 embryos, including 13 embryos from two PGT-SR families and 40 embryos from eight PGT-M families, were included to evaluate a WGS-based method. There were 24 blastomeres and 29 blastocysts in total. All embryos were used for PGT-A. Karyomapping validated the WGS results. Clinical outcomes of the 10 families were evaluated.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: A blastomere or a few trophectoderm cells from the blastocyst were biopsied, and multiple displacement amplification (MDA) was performed. MDA DNA and bulk DNA of family members were used for library construction. Libraries were sequenced, and data analysis, including haplotype inheritance deduction for PGT-M and PGT-SR and read-count analysis for PGT-A, was performed using an in-house pipeline. Haplotyping with a proband and parent-only haplotyping without additional family members were performed to assess the WGS methodology. Concordance analysis between the WGS results and traditional PGT methods was performed.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: For the 40 PGT-M and 53 PGT-A embryos, 100% concordance between the WGS and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-array results was observed, regardless of whether additional family members or a proband was included for PGT-M haplotyping. For the 13 embryos from the two PGT-SR families, the embryonic balanced translocation was detected and 100% concordance between WGS and MicroSeq with PCR-seq was demonstrated.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: The number of samples in this study was limited. In some cases, the reference embryo for PGT-M or PGT-SR parent-only haplotyping was not available owing to failed direct genotyping.Wider Implications Of the Findings: WGS-based PGT-A, PGT-M and PGT-SR offered a comprehensive PGT approach for haplotyping without the requirement for additional family members. Buses represent the main mode for intercity passenger transportation in China. In recent years, a multichannel ticketing strategy has been widely employed in the bus passenger transportation industry. However, the mechanisms and key drivers of the channels through which bus passengers purchase tickets are underexplored. Thus, the aim of this study is to empirically apply an integrated choice and latent variable (ICLV) approach to analyze ticketing channel choice behavior and the heterogeneous preferences of bus passengers. The variables incorporated in the model include the socioeconomic characteristics of passengers, trip attributes, and latent attitudes with 12 ordinal indicators. Based on the data of 1800 participants collected from the city of Beijing, China, this study develops a ticketing channel choice ICLV model merging a discrete choice model with a structural equation model. The key factors that affect the channel preference are further discussed through a comparison with a conventional multinomial logit (MNL) model. The results reveal that the three attitudinal variables have a significant influence on ticketing channel choice. Furthermore, this study indicates that perceptual differences exist due to various socioeconomic and trip characteristics. Personal privacy is a major obstacle that prevents passengers from choosing online channels, especially for older passengers and those with lower education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater plays a pivotal role in the water resources of Shicheng County; however, the issue of excessive fluoride content in groundwater and its associated health risks often goes unnoticed. Groundwater assumes a crucial role in the hydrological dynamics of Shicheng County; nevertheless, the matter concerning elevated levels of fluoride within groundwater and its accompanying health hazards frequently evades attention. The hydrogeochemical analysis, obscure comprehensive water quality assessment based on cloud model, and probabilistic human health risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulation were conducted on 34 collected water samples. The findings indicate that the predominant groundwater hydrochemical types are SO 4 ·Cl-Na and HCO 3 -Na. The processes of rock weathering and cation exchange play crucial roles in influencing water chemistry. Groundwater samples generally exhibit elevated concentrations of F - , surpassing the drinking water standard, primarily attributed to mineral dissolution. The concentrations of F - in more than 52.94% and 23.53% of the groundwater samples exceeded the acceptable non-carcinogenic risk limits for children and adults, respectively. Considering the inherent uncertainty in model parameters, it is anticipated that both children and adults will have a probability exceeding 49.36% and 30.50%, respectively, of being exposed to elevated levels of F ions in groundwater. The utilization of stochastic simulations, in contrast to deterministic methods, enables a more precise depiction of health risks. Cis-regulatory elements have an important role in human adaptation to the living environment. However, the lag in population genomic cohort studies and epigenomic studies, hinders the research in the adaptive analysis of cis-regulatory elements in human populations. In this study, we collected 4,013 unrelated individuals and performed a comprehensive analysis of adaptive selection of genome-wide cis-regulatory elements in the Han Chinese. In total, 12.34% of genomic regions are under the influence of adaptive selection, where 1.00% of enhancers and 2.06% of promoters are under positive selection, and 0.06% of enhancers and 0.02% of promoters are under balancing selection. Gene ontology enrichment analysis of these cis-regulatory elements under adaptive selection reveals that many positive selections in the Han Chinese occur in pathways involved in cell-cell adhesion processes, and many balancing selections are related to immune processes. Two classes of adaptive cis-regulatory elements related to cell adhesion were in-depth analyzed, one is the adaptive enhancers derived from neanderthal introgression, leads to lower hyaluronidase level in skin, and brings better performance on UV-radiation resistance to the Han Chinese. Another one is the cis-regulatory elements regulating wound healing, and the results suggest the positive selection inhibits coagulation and promotes angiogenesis and wound healing in the Han Chinese. Finally, we found that many pathogenic alleles, such as risky alleles of type 2 diabetes or schizophrenia, remain in the population due to the hitchhiking effect of positive selections. This study aims to understand the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the paediatric population during the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Shanghai. We retrospectively analysed the population-based epidemiological characteristics and clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children in Minhang District, Shanghai, based on the citywide surveillance system during the outbreak period in 2022 (March to May). During this time, a total of 63,969 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were notified in Minhang District, out of which 4,652 (7.3%) were children and adolescents <18 years. The incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections in children was 153 per 10,000. Of all paediatric cases, 50% reported to be clinically symptomatic within 1-3 days after PCR confirmation by parents or themselves, with 36.3% and 18.9% of paediatric cases reporting fever and cough. Also, 58.4% of paediatric cases had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 52.1% had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination. Our findings are informative for the implementation of appropriate measures to protect children from the threat of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Monozygotic (MZ) twins, considered genetically identical, cannot be distinguished using regular short tandem repeats (STR) typing, thus presenting a challenge for forensic geneticists. In paternity testing, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in nuclear DNA can help distinguish MZ twins. However, the unique features of the mitochondrial genome, such as high copy number, small genome size, and high substitution rate, make it a promising source for applications in forensic science., Methods: Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on blood samples, and bioinformatic analysis was used to distinguish between MZ twins. Amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR) was used to confirm the WGS results. This methodology was further applied to forensic samples from criminal cases. Amplicon sequencing was also performed to further exclude the innocent twin., Results: The monozygosity of the twins was confirmed using STR typing. Only one potential somatic mutation, m.6903 T > C (2.6%), in the mitochondrial genome of one of the twins was verified when the sequence depth was set to 2000-fold, while no other distinguishing locus in the nuclear genome was identified. By dividing the number of C-reads by total reads, WGS data confirmed the amount of the minor component C to be 2.6%, which was further confirmed by ARMS-PCR. In addition, the heterogeneous locus was used to identify samples obtained from four criminal cases for forensic testing. Two heterogeneous loci in the sperm DNA of the other twin were identified by amplicon sequencing, and the amount of minor component T in m.6935C > T and m.6938C > T was estimated to be 17.91% and 18.79%, respectively., Conclusion: The biological samples taken from the MZ twins were distinguished using a combination of WGS, allele-specific PCR, and deep-amplicon sequencing. Compared with nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA exhibited a higher potential for distinguishing between the MZ twins. The distinguishing feature of the mitochondrial DNA was the heterogeneous SNPs that occurred in only one twin. One SNP was further verified in the samples from the criminal cases and helped identify the perpetrator in case 1 and case 2. Furthermore, two heterogeneous SNPs found by amplicon sequencing helped to exclude the innocent twin in all four cases. Objective: The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of a 12-month lifestyle intervention in improving cardiovascular disease risk factors in community-based menopausal transition and early postmenopausal women in China., Methods: One hundred healthy menopausal transition and early postmenopausal women aged 40 to 60 years were randomly assigned to receive either lifestyle change intervention (n = 53) or usual care (n = 47). Menopause status was defined by the menstrual change criteria of the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop + 10 based on prospective menstrual calendars. Women in the intervention group were provided with a colorful booklet that included dietary and physical activity recommendations, were individually interviewed, and completed biophysical cardiovascular risk assessments at the Women's Health Center (Beijing, China). Women were encouraged to follow a healthy eating pattern and to increase their aerobic activity (moderate level, 3 d/wk, 40 min/d). Women in the control group continued their usual eating patterns and activities. Weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference-to-hip circumference ratio (WHR), waist circumference (WC), body composition, blood pressure (BP), blood glucose, and serum lipids were assessed at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months in both groups., Results: Women in the intervention group were observed to have significant decreases in weight, BMI, WC, WHR, systolic BP, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol compared with women in the control group. At 3 months, there were significant decreases in weight (-0.28 vs 0.68 kg, P = 0.002), BMI (-0.06 vs 0.44 kg/m2, P = 0.003), WC (-0.28 vs 1.43 cm, P = 0.001), and WHR (-0.01 vs 0.01, P = 0.045) in the intervention group compared with the control group. At 6 months, there were significant decreases in WC (-0.73 vs 1.02 cm, P = 0.012), WHR (-0.02 vs -0.003, P = 0.020), and systolic BP (-7.52 vs -0.63 mm Hg, P = 0.012) favoring the intervention group over the control group. At 12 months, there were significant decreases in total cholesterol (-0.07 vs 0.03 mmol/L, P = 0.045) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-0.13 vs 0.01 mmol/L, P = 0.022) in the intervention group versus the control group., Conclusions: Lifestyle intervention may be an effective means for reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors in menopausal transition and early postmenopausal women in China.
