Forensic post-mortem examinations of animals are carried out on suspicion of violation of European and national legislation. In Denmark, and probably also in other countries with large-scale cattle production, cattle are regularly submitted for forensic assessment. Unfortunately, only few studies of forensic pathology in cattle are available. This paper presents a retrospective study of forensic case files on Danish cattle from January 2010 to December 2021. The case files were characterized with respect to types of lesion, age assessments of lesions and other parameters such as age and sex. A total of 118 forensic case files had been archived and related to 132 cattle (14 weeks–20 years of age; 68% female, 30% male and 2% unknown sex) with 228 lesions. Locomotor disorders constituted the majority of lesions. However, cachexia/emaciation, skin ulcerations and overgrowth of cornual horn were also frequent. Most lesions were chronic (91%) and age assessments for more than 2 weeks were stated for 79% of the lesions. This indicates that in Denmark at least, there is a need to consider how cattle with locomotor disorders are treated in a timely manner in order to avoid prolonged futile treatment and, thereby, suffering. Grossly visible reparative granulation tissue and new bone formation were present in lesions of 1–2 weeks and longer duration. However, all age assessments were stated in broad time intervals due to the lack of scientifically based forensic studies of age assessments of lesions in cattle. Therefore, to improve age assessments in forensic cattle cases, studies concerning the chronology of tissue reparation in cattle are warranted. Blunt force trauma is a common homicide method, inflicted in three different ways: bodily force, assault with blunt objects of various types and falls from height. The objective of this study is to provide thorough information on blunt force homicides with data on the victims, the offenders, the surrounding circumstances, the injury methods, the extent of injuries, and survival time, which will help inform the inexperienced as well as the seasoned forensic pathologist in their daily work with death investigation and as expert witnesses in court. We have analyzed autopsy reports and available case files of 311 blunt force homicides, making up 21.9% of all homicides in Denmark during 1992–2016. Most victims and offenders were male. Altercation in the setting of nightlife and intoxication was common in male victims, while most female victims were killed in a domestic setting. Bodily force was the most common primary homicide method, followed by assault with a blunt object and fall from height. The head was the region that most often had external injuries, with no noteworthy difference between cases with bodily force and blunt objects. Two out of three victims had one or more lacerations, most often located on the head and more often on the front. Brain injury was the primary cause of death in at least 72.0% victims. Compared to bodily force victims of blunt object assault were especially prone to skull and brain injuries, had a higher trauma score, and more died at the crime scene and had a shorter survival time. Background: SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion applied to the death of an infant < 1 year of age after an extensive post-mortem investigation. From 1980 to 2018, a total of 870 infants have been autopsied at the Section of Forensic Pathology, Department of Forensic Medicine, UCPH, covering East Denmark. In the same period, Danish national guidelines for infant care have been revised to avoid infants dying of SIDS. Objective: This study aimed to describe trends in infant autopsies regarding cause and manner of death, gender, age, month of death, sleeping position, and bed-sharing. The trends were compared to the change in national SIDS guidelines during the period of this study. Design: Information from autopsy reports from 1980 to 2018 were collected into 55 categories designed specifically for this study. Data from 7 of these categories were chosen and processed in Excel for basic epidemiological comparison. Results: The trends show that most infants in the study die of natural manner and most predominant causes of death are SIDS, infection, and congenital malformations. A change in national guidelines in 1991 recommending supine- or side sleeping position coincided with a reduction in the overall infant mortality and cases of SIDS. The peak age in the cohort is 90 days, but stratification in decades shows the infants dying younger each decade. Through the study period, the number of infants found dead sleeping in the prone position has declined. Influenza virus and coronavirus pandemics regularly sweep the globe, at great cost of health and economy. Our aim was to conduct a PubMed search for autopsy studies on influenza and coronavirus to investigate the contribution of autopsies during pandemics, focussing on autopsy methods and procedures and the role of autopsy findings in pandemics. The retrieved autopsy studies generally relied on microscopy, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunostaining and electron microscopy. Most were small and reported on lung effects, including diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), pneumonia and tracheobronchitis. Antibiotic therapy has diminished a role for bacterial pneumonia, whereas obesity is an emerging risk factor. Autopsy studies have provided new insights into coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) treatments like anti‐coagulative therapy. Unfortunately, autopsies during pandemics are hampered by lack of guidelines, facilities and expertise for handling potentially infectious corpses and by widely varying recommendations for personal protective equipment and procedures. The Department of Forensic Pathology, at the Forensic Institute, at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark has, in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, initiated a prospective observational study on COVID‐19‐related deaths encompassing postmortem imaging, standardized autopsy procedures/reporting and extensive tissue sampling for histological, chemical, microbiological and genetic analysis. Since the 1990s, there has been a reduction in the homicide rate in Denmark and other Western countries. Our hypothesis is that part of the decrease in the sharp force homicide rate can be explained by better and faster medical treatment over time, and we explore this via stab wound homicides, the largest group of homicides in Denmark. To investigate our hypothesis we undertook an epidemiological study of 428 stab wound homicides in Denmark 1992–2016 based on autopsy reports with registration of stab wounds, quantification of injury severity, treatment intensity and survival time. During 1992–2016, there was a significant reduction in the annual number of victims with a single stab wound, but no reduction in victims with multiple stab wounds. Victims with single stab wounds reached the hospital more often, survived longer and had less severe injuries (New Injury Severity Score (NISS)) than victims with multiple stab wounds. Higher NISS correlated with shorter survival time for all the stab wound victims and for the subgroup that underwent medical treatment. During the 25-year study period, the proportion of victims who underwent surgery before dying increased threefold. The victims in the first half of the study period had shorter survival times than the victims in the last half. We concluded that better and faster medical treatment could partly be responsible for the observed decrease in the number of single stab wound homicides and thereby possibly also in the total number of stab wound homicides. Sharp force trauma is a common homicide method. The weapon is typically a knife, which is easily accessible and does not require special skills. We have analyzed all 471 sharp force homicides in Denmark during 1992–2016 with special focus on aspects that are relevant to forensic pathologists, including the distribution of wounds and organ injuries. Most homicides were committed inside with a kitchen knife. The front left thorax was the most common area to be affected by sharp force trauma. In 18.9% of the victims, there was only one sharp injury, the majority on the thorax. The most common trajectory for stab wounds was directly posterior with no deviation to the sides or up/down followed by directly anterior. The heart (including pericardium) and lungs (including hemo‐ and pneumothorax) had injuries in more than 75% of the victims. 67% of victims were males. Female victims had more sharp force injuries and defense wounds than male victims. Most females were killed in domestic homicides (73.7%), most commonly in partner killings (56.4%). In contrast, many male victims were killed in a setting of nightlife/intoxication (34.0%) most by a friend/acquaintance delivering a few stab wounds. The results clearly show strong sex differences in both victims and offenders. This could be useful for shaping policies and public opinion, and as a route for understanding the developments in interpersonal violence. Sudden unexpected death in the young continues to be an important unsolved challenge. A significant proportion of the deaths are suspected to be caused by inherited cardiac diseases and are referred to as sudden cardiac deaths (SCD). We performed targeted molecular testing of 70 deceased individuals under 40 years of age that after forensic autopsy were suspected to have died of SCD. The individuals were previously genetically investigated using smaller numbers of genes associated with specific cardiac diseases. In our previous studies, seven (10%) individuals had pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants according to the 2015 ACMG guidelines. In order to investigate the value of expanding the panel to 100 genes associated with cardiac diseases, we histopathologically re-examined the 70 suspected SCD cases and grouped them according to phenotypes into suspected cardiomyopathy (the cardiomyopathy group), left ventricular hypertrophy (the hypertrophy group) and structural normal hearts (the SUD group). DNA was captured with the Haloplex target enrichment system and sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq. We found that 11 (16%) individuals harboured pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants. In the cardiomyopathy, hypertrophy and SUD groups, 22%, 6% and 17% of the individuals, respectively, harboured pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants. Our findings show that testing of a broad panel of genes associated with cardiac diseases identify potential pathogenic variants of cardiac diseases in a significant proportion of SCD cases, and this may have important implications in family screening to prevent future deaths. Schizophrenia patients have higher mortality rates and lower life expectancy than the general population. However, forensic investigations of their deaths often fail to determine the cause of death, hindering prevention. As schizophrenia is a highly heritable condition and given recent advances in our understanding of the genetics of schizophrenia, it is now possible to investigate how genetic factors may contribute to mortality. We made use of findings from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to design a targeted panel (PsychPlex) for sequencing of exons of 451 genes near index single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified with GWAS. We sequenced the DNA of 95 deceased schizophrenia patients included in SURVIVE, a prospective, autopsy-based study of mentally ill persons in Denmark. We compared the allele frequencies of 1039 SNPs in these cases with the frequencies of 2000 Danes without psychiatric diseases and calculated their deleteriousness (CADD) scores. For 81 SNPs highly associated with schizophrenia and CADD scores above 15, expression profiles in the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project indicated that these variants were in exons, whose expressions are increased in several types of brain tissues, particularly in the cerebellum. Molecular pathway analysis indicated the involvement of 163 different pathways. As for rare SNP variants, most variants were scored as either benign or likely benign with an average of 17 variants of unknown significance per individual and no pathogenic variant. Purpose: This paper presents a proposed guideline for the use of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) during forensic dental identification. Currently, whole-body PMCT is widely used prior to autopsies for the diagnosis of fractures, organ changes, hemorrhages, and for the localization of foreign bodies, but it may also facilitate the odontological identification process in single cases and in cases involving multiple fatalities. Several studies have described the use of PMCT in forensic odontological work, but we have not found any comprehensive set of guidelines on how to perform a forensic odontological examination using PMCT. The aim was to develop guidelines for creating post-mortem dental charts during forensic odontological identification examinations using the standard functions of PMCT. Methods: A proposed guideline was developed from 15 selected cases examined at the Section of Forensic Pathology, Department of Forensic Medicine at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark from October 2011 to May 2012. Using the functionalities and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of OsiriX DICOM-viewer software (Pixmeo Sarl, Bernex, Geneva, Switzerland) we adjusted the contrast and brightness settings and developed a proposed guideline for creating PMCT-based dental charts. A four-step guideline was produced. Conclusion: In our casework, we are currently using the guidelines proposed herein. The use of PMCT has allowed us to target our clinical examinations, greatly improving their efficiency. Furthermore, PMCT allows the storage of data for later documentation and research. The 1990s 12-16% total autopsy rate in Denmark has until now declined to 4%, while in Finland, it has remained between 25 and 30%. The decision to proceed with a forensic autopsy is based on national legislation, but it can be assumed that the financing of autopsies influences the decision process. Only little is known about the possible differences between health economics of Finnish and Danish cause of death investigation systems. The aims of this article were to analyse costs and consequences of Finnish and Danish cause of death investigations, and to develop an alternative autopsy practice in Denmark with another cost profile. Data on cause of death investigation systems and costs were derived from Departments of Forensic Medicine, Departments of Pathology, and the National Police. Finnish and Danish autopsy rates were calculated in unnatural (accident, suicide, homicide and undetermined intent) and natural (disease) deaths, and used to develop an alternative autopsy practice in Denmark. Consequences for society were analysed. The estimated unit cost (€) for one forensic autopsy is 3.2 times lower in Finland than in Denmark (€1400 versus €4420), but in Finland the salaries for forensic pathologists working at the National Institute for Health and Welfare are not included in the unit cost. The unit cost for one medical autopsy is also lower in Finland than in Denmark; €700 versus €1070. In our alternative practice in Denmark, the forensic autopsy rate was increased from 2.2% to 8.5%, and the medical autopsy rate from 2.4% to 5.8%. Costs per 10,000 deaths were estimated to be 50% (±25%) higher than now; i.e. €3,678,724 (2,759,112-4,598,336), but would result in a lower unit cost for forensic autopsies €3,094 (2,320-3,868) and for medical autopsies €749 (562-936). This practice would produce a higher accuracy of national mortality statistics, which, consequently, would entail higher quality in public health, an accurate basis for decision-making in health politics, and better legislative safety in society. The implementation of this alternative practice in Denmark requires that legislation demands that forensic autopsy be performed if causality between unnatural death and cause of death cannot be clarified or if cause of death remains unknown. The Danish Health and Medicines Authority should provide guidelines that request a medical autopsy in natural deaths where more information about disease as a cause of death is needed. The majority of homicides in the world are caused by firearms and a good understanding of gunshot wounds is important for the forensic pathologist. We have analyzed all 315 homicides by gunshots in Denmark during 1992-2016 with focus on information relevant to forensic pathologists. Of the 1417 homicides in Denmark in 1992-2016, 315 (22.2%) had gunshot trauma as the primary homicide method. During 1992-2016, there has been a significant decrease in the number of gunshot homicides overall, of homicides committed with hunting weapons, and of domestic gunshot homicides. Most victims (70.5%) and offenders (93.7% of homicides with known offenders) were males. Male victims were significantly younger than female victims. Most victims were killed with handguns (43.8%) or shotguns (41.0%). Compared to all other weapons, the victims killed with shotguns had fewer entry wounds, a higher New Injury Severity Score (NISS), and a higher proportion of contact/close-range entry wounds. The head (58.1%) and thorax (46.7%) were often injured, with injuries to the head being more common in contact/close-range entry wounds. The results show that gunshot injuries in homicides are different from suicides and accidents and clearly are affected by the homicide type, the sex of the victim, and the weapon used and that these entities are intertwined. Our findings provide an evidence-based foundation for use in death investigations and for policy development in the area of interpersonal violence.

Background: Human-inflicted bruises on pigs are a violation of the law and affected tissue is regularly sent for forensic investigation. The authors aimed to evaluate the variation in inflammation within and between human-inflicted porcine bruises in order to determine the optimal sampling procedure., Methods: Skin and muscle tissues from the centre and ends of 21 bruises were evaluated histologically. Moreover, RNA was extracted from the subcutaneous fat tissue. The bruises were detected during meat inspection at the slaughter line, and all carcases were kept at 5°C for 12-24 hours before sampling., Results: The sampling site with the most infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages differed between bruises inflicted on the same pig and between bruises inflicted on more pigs within the same delivery. The extracted RNA had RIN (RNA integrity number) values from 3 to 6.5., Conclusions: Tissue samples should always be taken from both skin and underlying muscle tissue. Samples should be collected from several sites along each bruise, and all bruises should be sampled in order to include the site of maximum tissue damage and inflammation. Archival cerebral tissue from infants whose deaths were attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) from South Australia and Western Denmark were stained for β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP) and graded according to a simple scoring chart. The resulting APP scores were correlated with sleeping situation (shared vs. alone) showing a significantly higher amount of β-APP staining in the non-bed-sharing, than in the bed-sharing infants (Mann-Whitney, Australia: p = 0.0128, Denmark: p = 0.0014, Combined: p = 0.0031). There was also a marked but non-significant difference in sex distribution between bed-sharers and non-bed-sharers with a male to female ratio of 1:1 in the first group and 2:1 in the latter. Of 48 Australian and 76 Danish SIDS infants, β-APP staining was present in 116 (94%) cases. The eight negative cases were all from the Danish cohort. This study has shown that the amount of β-APP staining was significantly higher in infants who were sleeping alone compared to those who were bed-sharing with one or more adults, in both an Australian and Danish cohort of SIDS infants. Whether this results from differences in the speed with which these infants die, differences in lethal mechanisms involving possible accidental asphyxiation in shared sleepers, or differences in the number of previous hypoxic-ischemic events, remains to be clarified., (Copyright © 2014. Carbon monoxide (CO) inhalation is a well-known method of committing suicide. There has been a drastic increase in suicide by inhalation of CO, produced from burning charcoal, in some parts of Asia, and a few studies have reported an increased number of these deaths in Europe. CO-related deaths caused by charcoal burning have, to our knowledge, not been recorded in the Danish population before. In this retrospective study we present all autopsied cases of CO poisoning caused by charcoal burning in the period 2008-2012. 19 autopsied cases were identified, comprising 11 suicides, 4 accidents, and 2 cases of maternal/paternal filicide-suicide. The mean age of decedents was 38.2 years and the majority of the decedents were men. In 16 cases carboxyhemoglobin levels were above 50 % and in 14 cases we found distinctive cherry red livor mortis. Various concentrations of ethanol and drugs were found in 9 cases. Data suggest that this method of death has increased significantly in Denmark. Therefore, it is highly relevant to draw attention to the subject, to increase awareness as well as prevent future escalation.
