Hurricanes are one of the most devastating earth surface processes. In 2020 and 2021, Hurricanes Zeta and Ida pounded the Mississippi River Delta in two consecutive years, devastated South Louisiana, and raised tremendous concerns for scientists and stakeholders around the world. This study presents a high-resolution spatial-temporal analysis incorporating planialtimetric data acquired via LIDAR, drone, and satellite to investigate the shoreline dynamics near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, the eye of Ida at landfall, before and after the beach nourishment project and recent hurricane landfalls. The remote sensing analysis shows that the volume of the ~2 km studied beachfront was reduced by 240,858 m3 after consecutive landfalls of Hurricanes Zeta and Ida in 2020 and 2021, while 82,915 m3 of overwash fans were transported to the backbarrier areas. Overall, the studied beach front lost almost 40% of its volume in 2019, while the average dune crest height was reduced by over 1 m and the shoreline retreated ~60 m after the two hurricane strikes. Our spatial-temporal dataset suggests that the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority's (CPRA's) beach nourishment effort successfully stabilized the beach barrier at Port Fourchon during the hurricane-quiescent years but was not adequate to protect the shoreline at the Mississippi River Delta from intense hurricane landfalls. Our study supports the conclusion that, in the absence of further human intervention, Bay Champagne will likely disappear completely into the Gulf of Mexico within the next 40 years. In 2005 and 2008, Hurricanes Rita and Ike made landfalls as category 3 and 2 hurricanes to the west of Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (RWR) in southwestern Louisiana. In 2013, three ~30 cm sediment monoliths dominated by brown clay were recovered along a ~30 m transect perpendicular to the shoreline from the RWR. Each monolith contains two distinct light-colored calcareous storm deposits that are attributable to these two landfalling hurricanes. Loss-onignition and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were performed on all three sediment monoliths to study the sedimentological and geochemical characteristics of these two storm deposits. The geochemical results show that the storm deposits are characterized by higher-than-average values of Ca, Sr, Zr, and carbonates and low percentages of water and organics. In addition, remote sensing images show that the rate of average shoreline retreat at the RWR is ~14.5 m/yr from 1998 to 2017, and 19 m/year and 25.5 m/yr during the Hurricane Rita and Ike years, respectively. Both loss-on-ignition and XRF results also show that despite being a stronger storm, the Hurricane Rita layers are much thinner than those of Hurricane Ike in all monoliths. Remote sensing data support our interpretation that Hurricane Rita caused significant shoreline erosion and coastal recession in 2005, rendering the sampling locations at least 30 m closer to the ocean and thereby more susceptible to storm surges when Hurricane Ike struck in 2008. Thus, these results suggest that site-to-sea distance is an important factor in determining the thicknesses of storm deposits in coastal wetlands, particularly along shorelines undergoing rapid marine transgression. The hydrological and environmental histories of estuarine wetlands in southern Louisiana are not well-documented. To better understand their local developmental processes, a 59 cm sediment core (WMA-1) was extracted from a bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) swamp located approximately 800 m west of Lake Pontchartrain. This area has been heavily influenced by human activities, and is susceptible to inundation from storm surges from Lake Pontchartrain as well as fluvial and lacustrine processes. 210Pb analysis indicates that WMA-1 has a sedimentation rate of 0.39 cm/year, consistent with the detection of a 137Cs peak at 18 cm depth. Sedimentological and geochemical analyses reveal two distinct sedimentological facies: an organic-rich dark brown peat unit from 0 to 29 cm containing low concentrations of terrestrial elements (e.g., Ti, and Fe), and a clay unit from 29 to 59 cm with elevated concentrations of most elements (e.g., Sr, Cl, Ti, Mn, and Fe). The pollen assemblage in the clay section is dominated by TCT (mainly Taxodium), but it is replaced by Salix and wetland herbaceous taxa in the overlying peat. The Taxodium swamp was present at the site at least 150 years ago, and was replaced by Salix and other bottomland hardwood trees and wetland herbs due to a decrease in water level around AD 1940. While climate may have played a role, this hydrological change was most likely caused by the significant regional human activities during the last 100 years. Two thin clay layers (at 3–5 cm, 14–19 cm) embedded in the upper peat section were likely deposited from hurricanes Isaac (2012) and Betsy (1969): two events responsible for heavy rain and significant storm-surge flooding. Our findings suggest that human activities are capable of altering local wetland hydrology and ecology, while the clay layers represent hurricane-induced floods at the site during the past century. Relative sea-level (RSL) rise associated with decreased fluvial sediment discharge and increased hurricane activity have contributed to the high rate of shoreline retreat and threatened coastal ecosystems in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, USA. This study, based on QuickBird/drone images (2004–2019) and LIDAR data (1998–2013), analyzed the impacts of shoreline dynamics on mangroves (Avicennia germinans) and marshes before and after the initiation of a beach nourishment project in 2013. The coastal barrier and dune crest migrated landward between 1998 and 2013. Meanwhile, the dune crest height increased between 1998 and 2001, then decreased in 2013, probably due to hurricane impacts. The total sediment volume along this sandy coastal barrier presented an overall trend of decline in the 1998–2013 period, resulting in a wetlands loss of ~15.6 ha along 4 km of coastline. This has led to a landward sand migration onto muddy tidal flats occupied by Avicennia germinans (1.08 ha) and Spartina (14.52 ha). However, the beach nourishment project resulted in the advancement of the beach barrier from Nov/2012 to Jan/2015, followed by a relatively stable period between Jan/2015 and Mar/2019. Additionally, both the dune crest height and sediment volume increased between 2013 and 2019. This set of factors favored the establishment and expansion of mangroves (3.2 ha) and saltmarshes (25.4 ha) along the backbarrier environments after 2013, allowing the tidal flats to keep pace with the RSL rise. However, waves and currents caused shoreline erosion following the beach nourishment project between Oct/2017 and Nov/2019, threatening wetlands by resuming the long-term process of shoreline retreat. This study presents a 5200-year history of coastal environmental changes and shoreline fluctuations based on a multi-proxy sedimentary record developed from the eastern end of Louisiana's Chenier Plain. Palynological, loss-on ignition, grain-size, and X-ray fluorescence data for a 525 cm sedimentary core indicate five stages of ecosystem development in the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge since the mid-Holocene. Between 5190 and 4240 cal yr BP, the relative sea-level was much lower than the present level, and our study area was occupied by a baldcypress swamp. When the Sale-Cypremont subdelta complex formed at a western position approximately 4600 years ago, our study area was transformed to a maritime forest about 4240–3440 cal yr BP, suggesting shoreline progradation. When the Mississippi River delta lobe switched to more easterly positions during the Teche, St. Bernard, Lafourche, and Plaquemine-Balize complexes, our study site was transformed back to a freshwater swamp between 3440 and 1520 cal yr BP and then to a coastal marsh between 1520 and 300 cal yr BP. After the Atchafalaya-Wax Lake subdelta complex formed at a more westerly position again, the modern-day beach form at 300 cal yr BP. These coastal ecosystem developments suggest that shoreline retreat started at ~3440 cal yr BP and persisted to the present day. In addition, evidence of at least four possible paleohurricane events was found during the late Holocene. Our multi-proxy record demonstrates that shoreline fluctuation in southwestern Louisiana was tied to the Mississippi River Delta Switch since the mid-Holocene. Shoreline progradation occurred during the Sale-Cypremont subdelta phase ~5200–3500 years ago, when the sediment supply was high. Retrogradation occurred after ~3500 cal yr BP when the Mississippi River subdelta complexes occupied more easterly position, resulting in diminished sediment supply. A significant increase in the delivery of water and total suspended sediment load from the Atchafalaya River to the Gulf of Mexico is needed in order to sustain the southwestern Louisiana coastal wetlands. The northern Gulf of Mexico shoreline is rapidly retreating, and coastal features of the abandoned Mississippi River delta complexes are eroding and subsiding. Bay Champagne is located in the Caminada-Moreau headland, a region located west of the currently active delta that has one of the highest rates of retreat and land loss globally. As a result, the shoreline at Bay Champagne has retreated more than two kilometers in the past 130 years, causing a gradual transition from a stable, circular freshwater lake to a frequently disturbed, semi-circular backbarrier lagoon. Analyses of clastic layers in a series of sediment cores collected at this site over the past decade indicate the lake was less perturbed in the past and has become increasingly more sensitive to marine incursion events caused by tropical cyclones as the shoreline retreated. Geochemical and pollen analyses of the cores also reveal profound changes in environmental and chemical conditions at Bay Champagne over the past century. Through relating stratigraphy to spatial changes observed from satellite imagery, this study establishes a timeline of the transition of Bay Champagne from an inland lake to a backbarrier environment, and demonstrated that these changes have not occurred at a constant rate. These results provide a case-study of changing local environmental conditions in response to rapid shoreline retreat, and therefore serve as a model for future coastal changes for Louisiana and other Gulf coastal areas. Global warming has led to a tropicalization of ecosystems, especially in the northern hemisphere, where freeze-sensitive plants, such as Avicennia germinans , are expanding northward, exposing tropical species to greater annual climate extremes. The effects of this driver on the boreal limits of mangroves need to be investigated for projecting the fate of mangroves in the face of global warming. Based on QuickBird, aerial/drone images, and historic air/seawater temperatures, this work analyzed the 2017–2018 winter freeze impacts on mangroves of Bay Champagne, Louisiana, USA. This winter freeze, marked by 14 days of subfreezing daily minimum temperatures, degraded ~90% (111 ha) of the studied mangroves. This macroclimatic setting caused defoliation and dry branches on Avicennia trees. Such degradation occurred mainly in mangroves established after 2004, where trees of low heights (1–1.5 m) and density between 1000 and 10,000 trees/ha were present mainly on topographically lower tidal flats (13–26 cm above mean sea-level). By contrast, healthy Avicennia trees were typically taller (1.5–2.2 m), growing at intermediate-density (4000–8000 trees/ha) stands, and occupying higher grounds (20–46 cm) in the inner part of mangrove areas. Canopy height and tree density modulated the winter freeze damages on Avicennia trees, as these factors attenuated the wind impacts along a microclimatic gradient. The microtopography of tidal flats may have also influenced the Avicennia degradation. The recovery of mangroves was rapid (~1 year) and regulated by a microclimatic and microtopographic gradient. Winter freeze impacts on mangroves will probably be attenuated as the increase in the stature and density of mangrove trees. These processes could contribute to the continued northward expansion of mangroves. Winter temperature and sea-level position are critical factors affecting the global distribution of mangroves and saltmarshes. The replacement of saltmarshes by mangroves is expected due to global warming, reflecting the long-term natural trends in the Holocene and anthropogenic impacts since the 20th century. We documented the Holocene history of wetlands dynamics in the boreal limits of the American mangroves, located at Bay Champagne, Louisiana (USA), by integrating sedimentological, palynological, geochemical (δ13C and C\N), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data, and radiocarbon chronology from two sediment cores. The results indicated a freshwater lake environment with herbs and wetland ferns, as well as C 3 terrestrial plants, between ~8100 and ~6500 cal yr BP. This environment shifted into a lagoon and saltmarshes having sedimentary organic matter sourced from marine algae between ~6500 and ~1500 cal yr BP. In the final stage, washover sediments were deposited in the lagoon during the last ~1500 cal yr BP. Despite the increased marine influence over the last ~6500 cal yr BP, mangrove pollen were not recorded between ~8100 and ~1500 cal yr BP, suggesting that mangroves were absent in the study area during that time interval. Historical evidence and a comparative analysis of our multi-proxy data with other mangrove studies from the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and eastern South America revealed a gradual mangrove expansion from tropical to subtropical coasts of South and North America during the mid-late Holocene. The mangrove colonies at their current boreal (29° 09′ N) and austral (28° 29′ S) limits were established in the early and mid-20th century, respectively. This mangrove dynamics on a continental scale suggests that the poleward mangrove migration was likely caused by the warming climate during the Holocene. Mangrove canopy height (MCH) has been described as a leading characteristic of mangrove forests, protecting coastal economic interests from hurricanes. Meanwhile, winter temperature has been considered the main factor controlling the MCH along subtropical coastlines. However, the MCH in Cedar Key, Florida (∼12 m), is significantly higher than in Port Fourchon, Louisiana (∼2.5 m), even though these two subtropical locations have similar winter temperatures. Port Fourchon has been more frequently impacted by hurricanes than Cedar Key, suggesting that hurricanes may have limited the MCH in Port Fourchon rather than simply winter temperatures. This hypothesis was evaluated using novel high-resolution remote sensing techniques that tracked the MCH changes between 2002 and 2023. Results indicate that hurricanes were the limiting factor keeping the mean MCH at Port Fourchon to <1 m (2002-2013), as the absence of hurricane impacts between 2013 and 2018 allowed the mean MCH to increase by 60 cm despite the winter freezes in Jan/2014 and Jan/2018. Hurricanes Zeta (2020) and Ida (2021) caused a decrease in the mean MCH by 20 cm, breaking branches, defoliating the canopy, and toppling trees. The mean MCH (∼1.6 m) attained before Zeta and Ida has not yet been recovered as of August 2023 (∼1.4 m), suggesting a longer-lasting impact (>4 years) of hurricanes on mangroves than winter freezes (<1 year). The high frequency of hurricanes affecting mangroves at Port Fourchon has acted as a periodic "pruning," particularly of the tallest Avicennia trees, inhibiting their natural growth rates even during quiet periods following hurricane events (e.g., 12 cm/yr, 2013-2018).
