This paper explores the implications of representations of places as 'diverse', particularly for those who live in them. Arising from an interdisciplinary research project, the paper takes one neighbourhood in Manchester (Cheetham Hill) and explores some of the narratives about it produced by residents and those who have a 'professional' stake in the area. These are put in the context of public narratives of the area, as well as Census data. The paper examines how different types of data generate different stories and how different methodological approaches can produce varied understandings of place, which have implications for how a place comes to be known and for the potential impact on the distribution of resources. This paper analyses the factors central to the practices and realities of historical educational support for destitute and neglected children in the Manchester Certified Industrial Schools (MCIS) to determine how the schools acted to support the lives of children who were removed from parental guardianship. In nineteenth-century England, the most vulnerable children, destitute and often neglected (specifically, those considered to have improper guardianship), posed a serious challenge to public order in urban society. This study employs primary records to trace the experiences of four children during and after MCIS enrolment. Prior to the current study, none of these records had been used in research. The analysis of records demonstrates that MCIS officers supported and followed up students even after they were discharged to help them survive without their parents and become conventional members of society. We use the Capabilities Approach to understand the ways in which e-scooters, as transportation resources, provide qualities that contribute to the ability of the transport system to enable people to participate in society. Government-led trials have been taking place in the UK since autumn 2020, focused on the provision of sharing schemes and with the intention of creating an evidence base on usership and contextual issues. This paper draws from a mixed-methods study in Greater Manchester, combining online surveys, reference groups and qualitative interviews. The findings suggest that e-scooters have a potential role in expanding the reach and boosting the reliability and flexibility of the transport system. Their relationship with safety is complex. Road safety concerns and issues relating to sharing space present barriers. Conversely, in relation to personal safety, e-scooters provide an alternative to walking through areas in which people may otherwise feel unsafe. For some, e-scooters offer a more affordable alternative to public transport and ride-hailing, but the unpredictability of cost, stemming from the per-minute costing model, can pose challenges for others. The low level of exertion can distinguish e-scooters from other micromobility options and, whilst some might therefore question their value in health terms when compared with other active modes of transport, people with conditions that mean they need to carefully manage their energy expenditure can therefore find e-scooters useful. Certain kinds of death that have been touristified and packaged as commodities have been referred to as 'dark tourism'. It is here where tragic memories are retailed as kitsch mementos in a society of the spectacle. Whilst death has long been an article of trade, commodification within dark tourism, including kitschification and semiotic appropriation of icons, and its interrelationship with placemaking has been overlooked in the literature. The purpose of our paper, therefore, is to outline the spectacle of atrocity and, in so doing, explore commercialisation of the dead within visitor economies. Drawing upon notions of commodification, placemaking, kitschification and semiotics, we construct an original conceptual model in order to lay a scholarly route map for future empirical research. To provide specific contextualisation, we offer a mini-case study from the 2017 terrorist attack at the Ariana Grande concert and its subsequent 'tragic placemaking' of Manchester, UK. Reflecting on a photo-elicitation project linked to a major exhibition of Shirley Baker's photos of Manchester and Salford in the 1960s and 1970s, this paper explores relationships between people and the photos that purportedly represent the communities of their childhoods. It addresses neglected questions about how documentary photos contribute to the construction of memory and about how personal memories might animate found photos. The article proposes that it is useful to describe relationships between people and photos using terminology that characterises connections between people. 'Intimate' relationships are the focus of this discussion; these occur when people have a personal connection, and feel close, to a photo. Intimate relationships were forged with Baker's photos in part because of their mnemonic power. Their utility as memory materials was not simply that they prompted remembering, including re-enactment of belonging in place, but that they did important work for participants by facilitating the composition of narratives about the self, past and present. Baker's photography collection is one of several, typically underused photographic sources in local archives, representing everyday life in post#-war Britain. Understanding how people relate to documentary photos that purportedly represent their lives, enables more effective use of found photos as sources in academic and community history contexts. This paper presents a case study of students’ experiences of the House system, an innovative scheme introduced for business students, aiming to enhance student experience. The findings are based on a survey of 350 students and 4 group interviews. Analysis of the findings, both statistical and qualitative, indicated perceived clear benefits for the House system, including making friendships, being mentored by supportive staff and skills development. However, they also perceived disadvantages, particularly with regard to unawareness of the system, and limited extra-curriculum and employability activities. The paper concludes that active participation in the House system has a potentially useful role in creating a meaningful and collaborative environment amongst students and staff. Repeated studies of urban regeneration have focused on the displacement of working class residents, but those who remain living in sites of urban change have received less attention. To attend to this gap, this paper focuses on the lives of long-standing residents in East Manchester, a site of urban regeneration, and examines their views of urban change. Ethnographic research reveals how the demolition and rebuilding of new houses has resulted in a deep sense of uncertainty. Drawing on anthropological theories of materiality, the analysis makes an original contribution to debates about urban regeneration, showing how social and material relations have been reconfigured and arguing that this in turn has created new meanings about the home. Extensive measurements of the urban heat island (UHI), where the urban areas stay warmer than rural areas, have been made for Manchester, over a year. From these adjustment factors have been derived for the new CIBSE Guide A, A2 External design data. The paper briefly outlines the theory behind the UHI and the details of the measurements. It then outlines the method of adjustment for CIBSE calculations for thermal response and plant sizing calculations. Some interesting features of the data are discussed such as the Manchester UHI being comparable to that of London and that it is increasing.Practical applications: Most buildings that building services engineers and other building designers are involved with are in urban or city centres. However, the weather data for their designs are based on near-rural weather data which does not include the urban heat island effect. Skills policy has consistently played a central part in Greater Manchester’s (GM) vision for devolution. From New Labour in the late 1990s to the Conservatives following their General Election victory in May 2015, GM’s leaders have lobbied Westminster for devolved powers over a wide range of areas. Skills policy and funding has been at the heart of this vision for the city and its wider region. This paper explores the rationale for doing so as well as providing an account of how decisions have been made at both the local and national level. Key players and policy moments are described as this is an account of ‘policy actors’ and ‘policy windows’. From Sir Howard Bernstein and Sir Richard Leese to Tony Blair and George Osborne, this has been a story of preparation and persistence but also of the identification and seizing of key moments and opportunities. The paper also considers the present and the approaching future, the precise powers that are now being established and the new models of democratic accountability that surround them. It is accepted that electricity networks need to grow in scale and scope to facilitate decarbonisation. It is also accepted that infrastructural change is incremental. Yet, the incremental delivery of network capacity and the relevance of this for energy transitions have received little attention. Instead, broader, evolutionary accounts of change predominate. Opportunities therefore remain to conceptualise and study the incrementality of network growth and to consider the implications of this for energy transitions. I conceptualise investment in network capacity as an outcome of infrastructural refraction: as emergent of varied and unevenly distributed histories and geographies of electrification beaming through and being refracted by the prism of socio-technical infrastructure in ways that condition the sited reconstitution of network capacities. Examining practices of translation, enacted by network operators, provides a method of revealing the constitutive details and dynamic of infrastructural refraction. A case study focused on the technological framing of the delivery of a 33 kV substation in Central Manchester is explored. The analysis stresses the importance of examining the contingencies of investment in capacity. In the context of increasing international mobility in higher education, educators experience multiple challenges in the classroom. In the UK, policy discourses often frame international students as desirable resources. However, international students are frequently problematised as in academic deficit. Cultural reasons are posited for different patterns of participation in seminar discussions and critical engagement. This deficit narrative is neo-imperialist. A critical and ethical pedagogy should position international students as equals and as co-contributors. This article suggests that by changing pedagogical structures of traditional higher education classroom in the UK, subverting norms for epistemological interactions, international students can be empowered to engage actively and critically. This approach draws on the principles of Active Blended Learning to develop an ethical pedagogy, with equitable epistemic access for internationally mobile students. After finishing high school in Pinsk, Russia, Chaim Weizmann studied two semesters in the Technical University of Darmstadt, returned home for a year, and in 1895 registered as a chemistry student at the Charlottenburg Technical University at Berlin. He studied and worked in the research group of A. Bistrzycki on synthetic dyestuffs and received a patent in the field. He graduated after 3 years and followed Bistrzycki to Freiburg, Switzerland, where he received in January 1899 a Ph.D. degree with a grade of Magna cum laude. He became a Privatdocent at the University of Geneva, worked in Prof. C. Graebe's group, published papers and patents and sold patents. In 1904, he moved to the University of Manchester in the UK and collaborated with Prof. William Henry Perkin Jr. in research on synthetic dyestuffs and natural products, and started to work with him on the synthesis of acetone by fermentation. He failed to be nominated to Perkin's chair when Perkin left in 1913, but became a Reader and head of the biochemistry laboratory. After a conflict with Perkin, he continued alone with the acetone synthesis project, found a bacterium that fermented the starch of corn, potatoes, and chestnuts to acetone and butyl alcohol, which was more efficient than a bacterium found by Perkin and co-workers. The urgent need for acetone in World War One for military purpose and the high yield of his bacterium in acetone-producing fermentation, compared with the bacterium of his competitors, made Weizmann's process the favored one by the British military during the war. Weizmann scaled up acetone production and increased its yield by increasing the sophistication of the process by using a high degree of sterilization. For his contributions he is regarded as the father of industrial biotechnology. His contribution to the war effort opened the door to the British leadership in his Zionistic activity. This paper uses 16 years of targeted fieldwork on excavating workers’ housing in the Manchester region, UK, to assess a variety of research approaches to the investigation of urban industrial housing of the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Manchester was one of the ‘shock’ cities of industrial Britain, and a honey pot for social commentary during the Victorian period. Using data from more than 30 excavation sites, it looks at the way in which archaeological evidence can be used to explore issues around house build quality, overcrowding, sanitation and disease, and reconstructing households from their material remains. Manchester's reputation for poor living conditions during the industrialising period was crystallised around the comments of contemporary social commentators from Engels to Gaskell. Yet, the archaeological evidence reviewed in this article demonstrates the value of archaeological approaches in challenging and testing such views through detailed case studies. More importantly, it shows that archaeological material can be used to study directly features of the new industrialised form of urban living, providing a set of research questions applicable across the industrial urban workers’ housing of Britain. This article examines four major Financial Fair Play (FFP) cases that have come before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Although significant previous work has addressed FFP in European football, there is a major gap where its treatment at the CAS is concerned. In addition to creating substantial holes in the effectiveness of FFP regulations, the progression of the four cases discussed have let some of FFP's most egregious offenders avoid sanctions they would consider damaging. In considering two especially important cases, this article argues that Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City have provided ample guidance for transforming mediocre clubs through disguised equity infusions to circumvent FFP until a sustainable revenue structure is created. For the CAS, the case line resulting in major FFP offending clubs escaping meaningful sanctions builds upon a body of anti-doping jurisprudence that has had the effect of shifting the cost-benefit analysis of rule breaking. Local Government in England has long bridled at the restraints on its activities imposed by an over centralised state. Yet now, with the Government proposing to devolve powers and responsibilities to newly established city region governance arrangements, is it a case of be careful what you wish for? In this paper we argue that the devolution from central government to local city regions marks the end of the old ‘politics as usual’ approach that has underpinned the resilience and effectiveness of the local government institution but failed to engage and energise local politics. In this context we pay particular attention to the Manchester model as the ‘poster city’ for devolution yet we question if even this model is sufficient to re-cast local relationships between market and state and state and citizen to enable devolution to bring real economic and social benefits to all in the city region. This paper investigates the role that flagship developments are having in the regeneration agenda of cities experiencing urban shrinkage. It focuses on Manchester, archetypical example of a post-industrial shrinking city that has been able to return to the growth paradigm. Using an exploratory case study methodology, this paper analyses the spillover effects of pro-growth approaches tackling urban shrinkage. It first compiles and critically assesses its multiple flagship developments, in order to study Manchester's decay process by opposing it to the initiatives that are coping with it. It will then go on to analyse the social consequences of those initiatives and to examine the factors that can burden the city's further development. The paper argues that even though Manchester has performed well in the political game, and cosmetically improved certain areas, its flagship developments have not been able to fix the economic or social problems derived from its decay. The urban heat island intensity (difference between a semi-rural and urban dry bulb air temperature, urban heat island intensity) has been analysed for Manchester using data from 1996 to 2011. The semi-rural sites were airfields and the urban site was 2 km from the centre of Manchester. Although the urban site was not as developed as the city centre it showed a significant urban heat island intensity. A stochastic model developed from the data showed that the maximum mean daily value would be about 6℃ which compared well with more detailed measurements. However, there was a highly significant trend of increasing urban heat island intensity which by the end of the century could add 2.4 K to the predicted climate change increase. An analysis of the urban morphology showed that the urban site had indeed become more urban over 9 years of the study, losing green spaces which mitigate against the urban heat island intensity.Practical application: The results from this paper will allow building and HVAC designers to consider the increase in the urban heat island in their designs when using future weather data. Although the results are for Manchester, similar trends may well apply to other similar-sized cities. Designers should consider the future weather data available, as their buildings will last for a considerable time so they should be as future-proofed as possible. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

It took 5 years to reach a position where un-grooved asphalt concrete is now considered a viable alternative to grooved asphalt concrete for airfield pavements in the UK. The main challenges during the initial introduction of this 'new' French-designed material were some reservations from the UK aviation industry to the application of previously unused types of asphalt, local and historical practice, and regulations. This paper presents an insight into the stages of approach adopted during the introduction of a new family of asphalt concrete which negates the need for grooving, the main challenges and achievements of the project team, together with some technical data related to design, project specification and long-term performance monitoring. The approach that was adopted and the findings presented in this paper successfully convinced some UK airport operators and managers to adopt un-grooved asphalt concrete as their runway surface course of choice. Records to date demonstrating the ability of well-designed surfacing material to maintain very good friction characteristics since the opening of the respective runways are also presented; this includes a case study on the most recent resurfacing work at Manchester airport's principal runway. Contemporary Manchester is recognized internationally as a footballing city, with both Manchester United and Manchester City acknowledged as prominent clubs. However, the city has not always been a force in the game, nor has the game always been important across Manchester’s social spectrum. This paper examines how Manchester first became established as a footballing city, identifying that success in the FA Cup in 1904 stimulated interest in the game and considers how the legacy of that victory enabled the game to develop in terms of participation and spectating. It also considers the social mix of attendees at professional games in the city, and closes by concluding that footballing success generated increased interest and was the catalyst for improvement in the infrastructure for both participation and attendance, enabling Manchester’s footballing identity to become established. Focusing on three dance works and an autoethnographic account of a site-specific performance in Manchester, UK, this paper explores how contemporary site-specific dance can alter the meaning, practice, and feeling of urban spaces. Philippe Saire's Cartographies (2012) reveals the ludic and sensual potentialities of the city, Wayne Sables's Traffic (2004) foregrounds urban rhythms of place, and a piece by the Guerilla Dance Project (2010) highlights overlooked habitual practices in familiar space. The first BBC radio programme for children in Britain was broadcast on November 15, 1922, by 2ZY in Manchester, on the second day of the BBC's operation. 2ZY was run by wireless manufacturer, Metropolitan Vickers, and staff studied American radio before creating Kiddies Corner, one of forerunners of the BBC's highly successful Children's Hour. This article uses archive documents to trace how American radio influenced the launch of children's broadcasting in Manchester. An analysis of programme listings evaluates how the BBC served children on its three stations, 2ZY, 5IT (Birmingham) and 2LO (London), during the first six weeks of official broadcasting, and suggests Manchester led the field. Presently, there are a growing number of ethnic minority students in the primary schools in northwest England. Through sociocultural theory, this paper examines student and parent perspectives of their experiences in the schools. Using a qualitative methodology, including observation, in-depth interviews, and field notes this case study focused on children of ethnic minority parents from a primary school in the northwest of England. Specifically, this study investigates the perspectives of ethnic minority students and their parents while identifying the pedagogical knowledge and strategies already being used by teachers and schools who work with ethnic minority students. Foundational to this research is the belief that ethnic minority families and teachers need to make concerted, intentional efforts to engage in and acquire appropriate knowledge for building effective, communicative relationships in order to benefit student achievement. Purpose: The pressure exerted on a squash player is a consequence of the quality of a shot coupled with the ability of the player to return the ball, namely, the coupling of the two players' situation awareness (SA) abilities. SA refers to an awareness of all relevant sources of information, the ability to synthesize this information using domain knowledge and the ability to physically respond to a situation. Methods: Matches involving the two best players in the world (n = 9) at the 2011 Rowe British Grand Prix, held in Manchester, United Kingdom were recorded and processed using Tracker software. Shot type, ball location, players' positions on court and movement parameters between the time an opponent played a shot prior to the player's shot to the time of the opponent's following shot were captured 25 times per second. All shots (excluding serves and rally ending shots) produced five main SA clusters, similar to those presented by Murray et al. (2018), except a greater proportion of shots were categorized in the greater pressure clusters and less in the lower pressure ones. Results: Individual matches were presented using cluster performance profile infographics which demonstrated how individual player's performance profiles differed between matches. Conclusion: It is suggested that it is the coupling, of the two player's behaviors, that makes the examination of tactics so challenging. This inherently means that performance profiles vary in subtle ways, making consistent profiles that are independent of the opponent very unlikely for elite players. Abstract Higher air temperatures in large cities like Manchester, UK, reduce human thermal comfort. In this paper, the impact of land cover on microclimate, and consequently on indoor thermal comfort is studied. Through different stages, field measurements and computer modelling were carried out for a heat wave episode in summer 2017 in Manchester: First, the urban heat island (UHI) was measured between the city centre of Manchester and the campus of the University of Salford (between May to October 2017). Maximum detected UHI was 2.3 °C at 4:00, during the hottest day of the year. Parallel measurements within the university campus showed that the park was 0.9 °C cooler than the paved areas (maximum cooling effect was 3.6 °C at 14:45). Finally, the impact of the current land cover of the campus, and a greener land cover (as a renaturing scenario) with more planted trees on indoor thermal comfort of a house within the campus were studied. It was found that by adding 17% more trees to the campus, indoor thermal comfort was improved by 20.8% during the hottest day of 2017 in Manchester. Research on the playing patterns of Manchester City, particularly under Pep Guardiola's guidance, is limited. Existing studies do not investigate the associations between the offensive phase's initial actions (interceptions, tackles, defensive behavior followed by a pass) and other elements of the attacking phase, such as pitch space positions (zones) and goals. This study goes beyond subjective observation and applies lag-sequential analysis on Manchester City's 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League group stage matches. Behaviors were recorded using the SoccerEye Observational Instrument and software. The data was analyzed using the Sequential Data Interchange Standard-Generalized Sequential Querier (SDIS-GSEQ) and Microsoft Excel. Of the 417 offensive phase starts, 30.7% began with an interception, 8.2% with a tackle, and 29.5% with defensive behavior followed by a pass. Zone 5 (central middefensive sector) had a positive association (z=4.1) with interceptions, while zone 8 (central mid-offensive sector) had a positive association (z=2.67) with defensive behavior followed by a pass. Zones 3 (right defensive sector) and 12 (right offensive sector) showed a positive association with tackles (z=2.96 and z=3.36, respectively). Interceptions (z=-2.61) and defensive behavior followed by a pass (z=-4.46) were inhibited in zone 2. The paper examines aspects of the career of Professor Sir Horace Lamb, FRS, a highly regarded classical fluid mechanicist, who, over a period of some thirty-five years at Manchester, made notable contributions in research, in education and in wise administration at both national and university levels. The article reveals the unusual sequence of events that led to his removing from Adelaide, South Australia, where he had served for nine years as the Elder Professor of Mathematics, to Manchester where he frequently interacted (sometimes rather coolly) with Manchester's other outstanding fluid mechanicist of the period, Osborne Reynolds. The urban heat island intensity is the difference in temperature between a site close to the centre of a city and a site close to but outside the city (the rural site). The urban heat island intensity varies continuously throughout the day and is strongly dependent on the weather conditions at the time. The most important weather parameters are the wind speed, the cloud cover and the solar radiation. We have developed an empirical model for the urban heat island intensity and applied it to a site near the centre of Manchester and a rural site at Rostherne, approximately 17 km away. Weather data from the Met Office station at Rostherne are available from the British Atmospheric Data Centre. Our model uses the measured wind speed, the measured cloud cover and the measured solar radiation from Rostherne. The parameters of the model are adjusted to give a best fit to the measured urban heat island intensity for the year 2014. The model is then used to predict the hourly urban heat island intensity for the first six months of 2015, obtaining good results especially as the values of the parameters are not changed throughout the year and the model does not make use of the temperatures at either site. The accuracy of the model is such that if used for a basic heating and cooling load calculations the accuracy of the annual demand is high.Practical applications: Many buildings that building services engineers and other building designers design are in urban or city centres. However, the weather data for their designs are based on near-rural weather data which do not include the urban heat island effect. This paper describes a method to ascertain the urban heat island effect in the centre of Manchester. A designer could apply this for Manchester and as an initial indication to other similar urban areas. This papers attempts to quantify the equity effect of a hypothesized economic instrument, a carbon charge on car commuters, for reducing carbon dioxide emissions produced by commuters on airport surface access. Manchester Airport is taken as a case study using staff Survey data from 2008 and 2010. Consumer welfare change is analysed for measuring the equity effects of carbon charge by user group, which considers the changes of travel mode choice, the carbon dioxide emissions reduction, the revenue from a carbon charge and how it is distributed. First, the individual carbon footprint in terms of gram passenger kilometre, and the damage cost of carbon by commuters on airport surface access are estimated. Next, the impact of carbon charge on travel behaviour is investigated by the nested logit model. Finally, the net effect of carbon charges is assessed by travel mode user, gender, job type, and age group. The results show some impacts of the carbon charge on car users and carbon reduction, and the positive effects on lower income group and less carbon commuters. The quantified results provide the evidences for the mitigation policies to combine monetary incentives with disincentives for travel behaviour change, and demonstrate the different equity effects among commuter groups. The problem of the working-class female shoplifter emerged prominently within press and police discourse in interwar Manchester following a dramatic shift in the city's retail culture. Providing the first non-metropolitan study of shoplifting in early twentieth-century Britain, this research identifies how the new retail culture was blamed for attracting shoplifters to Manchester. It addresses depictions of shoplifters from the late 1920s in relation to narratives about young working-class women's increased autonomy, and shows how in the 1930s the city centre was depicted as vulnerable to the geographical mobility and misbehaviour of older, married working-class women, in light of access to the motorcar and advances in public transport. A focus on their illicit access to consumer culture, rather than concerns about sexuality, moves away from a portrayal of working-class women as vulnerable and heavily policed in cities and instead suggests that interwar shoplifting discourse reflected a sense that poorer women had greater freedoms in the post-1918 city. The role of shopping culture helped working-class women gain increased visibility in the urban sphere in similar ways to those experienced by more affluent women in the pre-1918 cityscape. In the nineteenth century, the British government at home and in the empire promoted the development of public health systems to contain epidemic diseases. By the early twentieth century, the government turned its focus increasingly to children's physical fitness and, in turn, society's capacity for both labour and military power. Given the role that women played in reproducing the nation's prospective power, women were perceived to need intervention not only for their own sake but also for the well-being of the nation's next generation. This essay considers the historical moment when government officials, social reformers and physicians realised that they needed mothers to live for their nations and states to survive. After reviewing discourses shared by social reformers and government officials in Bombay and Manchester, the essay considers the records of St. Mary's Hospital and the Nowrosjee Wadia Maternity Hospital to explore the role of physicians in the medicalisation of maternal mortality. Background: A 2017 terrorist attack in Manchester, UK, affected large numbers of adults and young people. During the response phase (first seven weeks), a multi-sector collaborative co-ordinated a decentralised response. In the subsequent recovery phase they implemented a centralised assertive outreach programme, 'The Resilience Hub', to screen and refer those affected. We present a process evaluation conducted after 1 year. Methods: Case study, involving a logic modelling approach, aggregate routine data, and semi-structured interviews topic guides based on the Inter-Agency Collaboration Framework and May's Normalisation Process Theory. Leaders from health, education and voluntary sectors (n = 21) and frontline Resilience Hub workers (n = 6) were sampled for maximum variation or theoretically, then consented and interviewed. Framework analysis of transcripts was undertaken by two researchers. Results: Devolved government, a collaborative culture, and existing clinical networks meant that, in the response phase, a collaboration was quickly established between health and education. All but one leader evaluated the response positively, although they were not involved in pre-disaster statutory planning. However, despite overwhelming positive feedback there were clear difficulties. (1) Some voluntary sector colleagues felt that it took some time for them to be involved. (2) Other VCSE organisations were accused of inappropriate, harmful use of early intervention. (3) The health sector were accused of overlooking those below the threshold for clinical treatment. (4) There was a perception that there were barriers to information sharing across organisations, which was particularly evident in relation to attempts to outreach to first responders and other professionals who may have been affected by the incident. (5) Hub workers encountered barriers to referring people who live outside of Greater Manchester. After 1 year of the recovery phase, 877 children and young people and 2375 adults had completed screening via the Resilience Hub, 79% of whom lived outside Greater Manchester. Conclusions: The psychosocial response to terrorist attacks and other contingencies should be planned and practiced before the event, including reviews of communications, protocols, data sharing procedures and workforce capacity. This article evaluates the cultural politics of waterfront heritage in regenerating Manchester, UK, in order to understand why the benefits envisaged for local communities have not been fully realised. Analysing a database of texts produced for an EU cultural heritage project (2015–2017) we find there is no lack of rich and diverse cultural heritage in Manchester, produced by a broad range of people. Using Lefebvre's ideas about the social production of space we explore how, nonetheless, waterfronts as heritage spaces are produced in ways that exclude that variety, and thus place and displace people, socially as well as bodily. We propose a role for geolocated mobile apps for spatialised heritage storytelling to enable communities to make their mark on official, imposed representations of space. Our analysis has relevance for cities across the globe, as governments, investors, redevelopment quangos and others seek to use urban waterways as heritage assets to reinvigorate former industrial areas, without adequate appreciation of their full range of cultural meanings. This article examines the actions of Mancunians who either supported or opposed abolitionism between the years 1792 and 1807. A central part of this article is an exploration of the individual signatories (and associated addresses and businesses) who attached their names to the Manchester pro- and antislavery petitions of 1806. This is achieved by using historical geographic information systems (GIS) to understand and plot patterns of opposing ideologies throughout the city in order to present the idea that the ideology expanded beyond social clubs, parlours, and published materials. The notion that two opposing sides of the slavery debate often occupied the same space is investigated. Journalists in Manchester have reported on homelessness with the intention of highlighting a problem, persuading a charitable response and encouraging legislative intervention. They serve as the way for readers, who may not spend time among the homeless, to observe and understand. This article argues that the representation is restricted by the ideological arena in which journalists work. It posits that by utilizing Fredric Jameson's interpretive horizons methodology, the political unconscious of copy can be unearthed to reveal the acceptance of the inevitability of homelessness, which has been internalized and reconfigured in stories about the topic. It argues that it is possible to reveal the strategies of containment unconsciously employed, which conceal the relationship between labour and value, and ultimately defend the status quo, despite the intentions of journalists and publications. It further posits that the systemic, societal causes of homelessness are ultimately unchallenged, with the experience unconsciously mediated by the journalists and shared with an audience treated as fellow observers. Places are more than mere locations indicated by coordinates on a map. They are sites invested with meaning that arises out of mobile, embodied, sensuous experience. The construction of place is explored here in the context of participatory, embodied, sensory ethnographic research. I curated a series of ethnographic engagements with international students who were newly arrived in the city of Manchester, England. A participatory, embodied, sensory ethnographic method was used to explore ways in which meaningful places are constructed through the body and senses. This article reports on walking interviews with Tala (from Zambia), Ann (from Romania), Al (from Tunisia), Abbie (from Spain), and her guide dog Tori (from the U.S.), to explore their corporeal and sensuous engagements with their new city, using a combination of transcribed interviews and other, less language-based products of our engagements (photography, artifacts, soundscapes).
