—The paper concerns the sediment sequence, which is widespread in the Yenisei valley and in the Tuva and Minusa depressions and also present in the valleys of the southern Chulym plain. The sediments of this sequence were previously described as “Neogene mud-shedding”, as well as moraines, alluvial fan deposits, alluvium of Middle Pleistocene high terraces, and lacustrine sediments. The giant ripple marks on the Upper Yenisei terraces was commonly interpreted as ribbed moraines; however, in recent studies, these ridges have been repeatedly referred to as marks of giant current ripples. Besides, some recently published papers provide description of geology of this sequence fragments suggesting its deposition by cataclysmic floods. Geomorphological analysis of the area shows Pleistocene glaciers to have been localized within the medium–high mountainous areas. The glaciers did not reach the Tuva and Minusa depressions and occupied large areas only in the Todzha basin and on the periphery of the Darkhat basin, forming a glacial dam at its outlet, which resulted in glacial-dammed lakes filling the basin completely. These lakes outburst, and the resultant flooding led to the deposition of megaflood sediments, which we refer to here as the Upper Yenisei sediment sequence. A detailed analysis of its facies architecture revealed similarity of these sediments to those of the Sal’dzhar and Inya sequences in Gorny Altai. Most of the Upper Yenisei megaflood sediments are localized in topographic lows of the Tuva and Minusa depressions. Beyond the Altai–Sayan mountainous area, the megaflood sediments of the Upper Yenisei sequence compose high terraces of the Yenisei, Chulym, Chet’, and Kiya rivers in the southern Chulym plain. The formation of Upper Yenisei sequence dates to the first half of the Late Pleistocene, inasmuch as it contains inset alluvial sediments of the second terrace of the Yenisei River. The available data allow suggesting that the Upper Yenisei sequence formed in the first Late Pleistocene regional glaciation. The Sal’dzhar sequence in Gorny Altai and the fourth terrace of the Ob’ River on the Fore-Altai plain are stratigraphic analogs of the Upper Yenisei sequence. The Upper Yenisei and Sal’dzhar sequences can thus be considered future regional markers serving as a link for the local stratigraphic schemes of the Altai–Sayan mountainous area and adjacent West Siberian plains. The results obtained call for verification by geochronological dating, first of all, by modern luminescence dating methods covering a wider chronological interval than radiocarbon dating.

The Coregonus lavaretus (Linnaeus, 1758) complex is a morphologically and genetically diverse group of whitefish. Its taxonomic structure has been controversial for almost a century. At least 25 forms of C. lavaretus have been described in Siberia, but there is still no consensus on their intraspecific structure and taxonomy. Coregonus lavaretus pidschian (Gmelin, 1789) was described as a subspecies of C. lavaretus. Recently, it was assumed that this subspecies is also a complex. The purpose of this study was to compare the distributions of pidschian-like whitefish haplotypes in two basins of large Siberian rivers, Yenisei and Lena, and to assess the gene flow between basins of these rivers, which were connected after the last glaciation. The sequence of the following mitochondrial DNA genes, 16S rRNA (partial), tRNA-Leu (full), NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (full), tRNA-Ile (full), and tRNA-Gln (partial), were used for the inference of intraspecific genetic structure of C. l. pidschian. Whitefish haplotypes were clustered into two groups according to their distribution between two large Siberian river basins; however, there were shared haplotypes indicating events of migration and hybridization, which could occur when Bolshoi Yenisei and Lena river systems were connected after the last glaciation (the Late Pleistocene). info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

This study is a pioneering attempt to count microplastics (MPs) in the Yenisei River system to clarify the role of Siberian Rivers in the transport of MPs to the Arctic Ocean. The average MPs content in the surface water of the Yenisei large tributary, the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River, varied from 1.20 ± 0.70 to 4.53 ± 2.04 items/m3, tending to increase along the watercourse (p < 0.05). Concentrations of MPs in bottom sediments of the two rivers were 235 ± 83.0 to 543 ± 94.1 with no tendency of downstream increasing. Linear association (r = 0.952) between average organic matter content and average counts of MPs in bottom sediments occurred. Presumably MPs originated from the daily activities of the in-situ population. Further spatial-temporal studies are needed to estimate the riverine MPs fluxes into the Eurasian Arctic seas.

Анализируется применение термина «Средняя Сибирь» в отечественной литературе. Делается вывод об устойчивом применении его в геолого-географической, исторической научной литературе, показываются значительные расхождения в понимании содержания самого термина специалистами разных наук. Отмечается также разрушение прежней структуры экономического районирования Северной Азии, изменение территорий федеральных округов, уход в историю из административного употребления понятий «Западная Сибирь», «Восточная Сибирь», «Средняя Сибирь».

Представлены современные сведения о кормовой базе (зообентос) и ихтиофауне в р. Енисей (верхнее и среднее течение) и его притоках (рр. Кан, Агул, Кунгус, Мана, Абакан). Установлено, что в донной фауне преобладают литореофильные организмы, представленные личинками насекомых. Енисей характеризовался низкой биомассой в верховье (4,2 г/м2) и максимальной на участке от плотины Майнской ГЭС до г. Абакан (19,5 г/м2), где в массе развиваются амфиподы байкальского происхождения. В притоках Енисея распределение биомассы зависело от таксономической структуры донных сообществ. В рр. Мана и Кан биомасса составила 12,3 и 10,8 г/м2 соответственно при доминировании ручейников. В рр. Абакан, Агул и Кунгус биомасса в среднем не превышала 8 г/м2, основной вклад вносили веснянки. На основе количественных показателей зообентоса определена рыбопродуктивность водотоков, обозначены объекты искусственного воспроизводства и рассчитан предельно допустимый объем вселения молоди рыб. Приоритетными объектами искусственного воспроизводства признаны стерлядь, обыкновенный таймень, сиг, сибирский осетр, ленок, хариус сибирский. Наибольшей приемной емкостью обладает р. Енисей (на участке от плотины Красноярской ГЭС до р. Ангары), наименьшей – р. Агул и ее приток р. Кунгус. Рыбохозяйственный потенциал исследованных водотоков очень высок. Однако для восстановления популяций ценных для региона видов рыб недостаточно только искусственного воспроизводства. Необходим комплекс мер, включающий охрану водных биоресурсов и рациональную организацию промысла.

The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus Linnaeus, 1758) is a relatively small sturgeon widely distributed in Eurasian rivers from the Danube to the Yenisei. During the twentieth century, all wild sterlet populations have declined due to anthropogenic factors including: overfishing, poaching, construction of dams, and pollution. Despite the necessity of characterization both wild and captive stocks, few studies of population genetics have been performed thus far. Here we studied the genetic diversity and geographic structure of sterlet populations across the eastern range – Ob-Irtysh and Yenisei basins – by sequencing a 628-bp fragment of mitochondrial DNA control region. We identified 98 new haplotypes, delineated 12 haplogroups and estimated the time of basal haplogroup divergence within the species as over 8 million years ago. Our data suggest that Ob-Irtysh and Yenisei populations are isolated from each other and much lower genetic diversity is present in the Yenisei population than in the Ob-Irtysh population. Our data imply that sterlet populations in Siberian rivers underwent bottleneck or fragmentation, followed by subsequent population expansion. The data obtained here are important for sterlet population monitoring and restocking management.

Представлены результаты изучения формирования фитопланктонного сообщества и флуоресцентных характеристик вод в условиях сброса высоконапорной Красноярской ГЭС. Сезонные и межгодовые изменения фитопланктона оценивали на основе численности и биомассы клеток фитопланктона, а также концентрации хлорофилла а. Выявлены закономерности сезонных сукцессий и межгодовых вариаций структурно-функциональных характеристик фитопланктона. Обнаружено, что основу флористического списка в реке Енисей составляют диатомовые водоросли (66% от общего видового состава), преобладающие в планктоне во все сезоны года. Наибольший вклад в общую численность и биомассу фитопланктона вносят нанофитопланктон (2–20 мкм) и микрофитопланктон (20–64 мкм). В комплекс доминантов в ранневесенний период входили Diatoma vulgare Bory и Hannaea arcus(Ehrb.) Patr., в летний – Aulacoseira islandica (O. Müll.) Sim. и Cyclotella radiosa (Grun.) Lemm., позднелетний – Fragilaria crotonensis Kitt. Вместе с тем на фоне увеличивающегося видового разнообразия и интенсивного развития водорослей в весенне-летний период отмечен спад концентрации хлорофилла а. Установлено, что во все рассматриваемые годы пики численности и биомассы фитопланктона приходятся на июнь за счет колониальных диатомовых водорослей, попадающих в нижний бьеф со стоком из верхнего бьефа.

The article offers a general view of the graylings (Thymallidae) from the largest Siberian river basins, namely those of the Ob and Yenisei, including the Khantayskoye and Baikal Lakes. It provides data on some of the most important morphological features. It is shown that it is erroneous to consider the graylings only within the subspecies Thymallus arcticus arcticus. The reservoirs of the Altai-Sayan highlands, which drain to the north into the inland waters of Mongolia, should also be considered, as one of the two major centres of speciation and morphogenesis for graylings.

Results of long-term hydrobiological monitoring for the Yenisei river section from the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station dam to the village Zotino (Turukhansk district of the Krasnoyarsk region) are considered. Researching of zoobenthos showed significant changes of its structure after the Krasnoyarsk HPP dam construction. In particular, the proportion of amphipods (crustaceans) in the zoobenthos biomass increased by 10 times. In the expeditionary studies, seven species of amphipods were identified, but it should be noted that only two species develop and clearly dominate among them. Data obtained during the hydrobiological research formed the basis of geospatial database developed as a result of the work. The geospatial database with the observation results is available in the ICM SB RAS geoportal. The geoportal services provide data visualization in the form of interactive thematic maps, information about the objects on the map as “tooltips”, information downloading in tabular form, direct access to the data through the web mapping services. Information and analytical support for the monitoring system based on the considered approach can simplify access to the needed information, provide new opportunities for analysis and modeling, promote the development of cross-disciplinary researches.
