It is shown in this article that for any $S \in \{\mathcal{SS}_{n}, \mathcal{LS}_{n}, {RLS}_{n}(p), {RSS}_{n}(p)\}$, $S$ is abundant and idempotent generated for all values of $n$. Moreover, the ranks of the Rees quotients ${RLS}_{n}(p)$ and ${RSS}_{n}(p)$ are shown to be equal to the ranks of the two-sided ideals $K(n,p)$ and $M(n,p)$, respectively. Finally, these ranks are computed to be $\sum\limits_{k=p}^{n} \binom{n}{k} \binom{k-1}{p-1}$ and $\binom{n-1}{p-1}2^{n-p}$, respectively.

Dark patterns in user interfaces represent deceptive design practices intended to manipulate users' behavior, often leading to unintended consequences such as coerced purchases, involuntary data disclosures, or user frustration. Detecting and mitigating these dark patterns is crucial for promoting transparency, trust, and ethical design practices in digital environments. This paper proposes a novel approach for detecting dark patterns in user interfaces using logistic regression and bag-of-words representation. Our methodology involves collecting a diverse dataset of user interface text samples, preprocessing the data, extracting text features using the bag-of-words representation, training a logistic regression model, and evaluating its performance using various metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC). Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in accurately identifying instances of dark patterns, with high predictive performance and robustness to variations in dataset composition and model parameters. The insights gained from this study contribute to the growing body of knowledge on dark patterns detection and classification, offering practical implications for designers, developers, and policymakers in promoting ethical design practices and protecting user rights in digital environments.

We conducted a search for new ultracool companions to nearby white dwarfs using multiple methods, including the analysis of colors and examination of images in both the optical and the infrared. Through this process, we identified fifty-one previously unrecognized systems with candidate ultracool companions. Thirty-one of these systems are resolved in at least one catalog, and all but six are confirmed as co-moving companions via common proper motion and consistent parallax measurements (when available). We have followed up four co-moving companions with near-infrared spectroscopy and confirm their ultracool nature. The remaining twenty candidates are unresolved, but show clear signs of infrared excess which is most likely due to the presence of a cold, low-mass companion or a dusty circumstellar disk. Three of these unresolved systems have existing optical spectra that clearly show the presence of a cool stellar companion to the white dwarf primary via spectral decomposition. In this paper, we introduce the Actions and Objects Pathways (AOPath) for out-of-domain generalization in video question answering tasks. AOPath leverages features from a large pretrained model to enhance generalizability without the need for explicit training on the unseen domains. Inspired by human brain, AOPath dissociates the pretrained features into action and object features, and subsequently processes them through separate reasoning pathways. It utilizes a novel module which converts out-of-domain features into domain-agnostic features without introducing any trainable weights. We validate the proposed approach on the TVQA dataset, which is partitioned into multiple subsets based on genre to facilitate the assessment of generalizability. The proposed approach demonstrates 5% and 4% superior performance over conventional classifiers on out-of-domain and in-domain datasets, respectively. It also outperforms prior methods that involve training millions of parameters, whereas the proposed approach trains very few parameters.

Recent advancements in large language model(LLM) performance on medical multiple choice question (MCQ) benchmarks have stimulated interest from healthcare providers and patients globally. Particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) facing acute physician shortages and lack of specialists, LLMs offer a potentially scalable pathway to enhance healthcare access and reduce costs. However, their effectiveness in the Global South, especially across the African continent, remains to be established. In this work, we introduce AfriMed-QA, the first large scale Pan-African English multi-specialty medical Question-Answering (QA) dataset, 15,000 questions (open and closed-ended) sourced from over 60 medical schools across 16 countries, covering 32 medical specialties. We further evaluate 30 LLMs across multiple axes including correctness and demographic bias. Our findings show significant performance variation across specialties and geographies, MCQ performance clearly lags USMLE (MedQA). We find that biomedical LLMs underperform general models and smaller edge-friendly LLMs struggle to achieve a passing score. Interestingly, human evaluations show a consistent consumer preference for LLM answers and explanations when compared with clinician answers.

Over a decade there has been a rapid growth in Nigerian educational system particularly higher education. Various institutions have come up both from public and private sector offering many of courses both under and post graduate students. Therefore, rates of students enroll for higher educational institutions in Nigeria have also increased. Hence it is very important to understand the roles play by data mining in analyzing the collected data of students and their academic progression. It is a concern for today's education system and this gap has to be identified and properly addressed to the learning community. Data Mining it helps in various ways to resolve issues face in predictions students and staff performances within Nigerian education system. This paperwork we discuss the roles of Data Mining tools and techniques which can be used effectively in resolving issues in some functional unit of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Chest X-rays (X-ray images) have been proven to be effective for the diagnosis of chest diseases, including Pneumonia, Lung Opacity, and COVID-19. However, relying on traditional medical methods for diagnosis from X-ray images is prone to delays and inaccuracies because the medical personnel who evaluate the X-ray images may have preconceived biases. For this reason, researchers have proposed the use of deep learning-based techniques to facilitate the diagnosis process. The preeminent method is the use of sophisticated Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In this paper, we propose a novel detection model named \textbf{AttCDCNet} for the task of X-ray image diagnosis, enhancing the popular DenseNet121 model by adding an attention block to help the model focus on the most relevant regions, using focal loss as a loss function to overcome the imbalance of the dataset problem, and utilizing depth-wise convolution to reduce the parameters to make the model lighter. Through extensive experimental evaluations, the proposed model demonstrates exceptional performance, showing better results than the original DenseNet121. The proposed model achieved an accuracy, precision and recall of 94.94%, 95.14% and 94.53%, respectively, on the COVID-19 Radiography Dataset.

Binary program vulnerability detection is critical for software security, yet existing deep learning approaches often rely on source code analysis, limiting their ability to detect unknown vulnerabilities. To address this, we propose VulCatch, a binary-level vulnerability detection framework. VulCatch introduces a Synergy Decompilation Module (SDM) and Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KAN) to transform raw binary code into pseudocode using CodeT5, preserving high-level semantics for deep analysis with tools like Ghidra and IDA. KAN further enhances feature transformation, enabling the detection of complex vulnerabilities. VulCatch employs word2vec, Inception Blocks, BiLSTM Attention, and Residual connections to achieve high detection accuracy (98.88%) and precision (97.92%), while minimizing false positives (1.56%) and false negatives (2.71%) across seven CVE datasets.

Effective management of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) is crucial for sustainable development, as the industry accounts for 40% of the waste generated globally. The effectiveness of the C&DW management relies on the proper quantification of C&DW to be generated. Despite demolition activities having larger contributions to C&DW generation, extant studies have focused on construction waste. The few extant studies on demolition are often from the regional level perspective and provide no circularity insights. Thus, this study advances demolition quantification via Variable Modelling (VM) with Machine Learning (ML). The demolition dataset of 2280 projects were leveraged for the ML modelling, with XGBoost model emerging as the best (based on the Copeland algorithm), achieving R2 of 0.9977 and a Mean Absolute Error of 5.0910 on the testing dataset. Through the integration of the ML model with Building Information Modelling (BIM), the study developed a system for predicting quantities of recyclable and landfill materials from building demolitions. This provides detailed insights into the circularity of demolition waste and facilitates better planning and management. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method highlighted the implications of the features for demolition waste circularity. The study contributes to empirical studies on pre-demolition auditing at the project level and provides practical tools for implementation. The widespread adoption of ML systems across critical domains like hiring, finance, and healthcare raises growing concerns about their potential for discriminatory decision-making based on protected attributes. While efforts to ensure fairness during development are crucial, they leave deployed ML systems vulnerable to potentially exhibiting discrimination during their operations. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework for on-the-fly tracking and correction of discrimination in deployed ML systems. Leveraging counterfactual explanations, the framework continuously monitors the predictions made by an ML system and flags discriminatory outcomes. When flagged, post-hoc explanations related to the original prediction and the counterfactual alternatives are presented to a human reviewer for real-time intervention. This human-in-the-loop approach empowers reviewers to accept or override the ML system decision, enabling fair and responsible ML operation under dynamic settings. Zero-shot text learning enables text classifiers to handle unseen classes efficiently, alleviating the need for task-specific training data. A simple approach often relies on comparing embeddings of query (text) to those of potential classes. However, the embeddings of a simple query sometimes lack rich contextual information, which hinders the classification performance. Traditionally, this has been addressed by improving the embedding model with expensive training. We introduce QZero, a novel training-free knowledge augmentation approach that reformulates queries by retrieving supporting categories from Wikipedia to improve zero-shot text classification performance. Our experiments across six diverse datasets demonstrate that QZero enhances performance for state-of-the-art static and contextual embedding models without the need for retraining. Notably, in News and medical topic classification tasks, QZero improves the performance of even the largest OpenAI embedding model by at least 5% and 3%, respectively. Acting as a knowledge amplifier, QZero enables small word embedding models to achieve performance levels comparable to those of larger contextual models, offering the potential for significant computational savings. Additionally, QZero offers meaningful insights that illuminate query context and verify topic relevance, aiding in understanding model predictions. Overall, QZero improves embedding-based zero-shot classifiers while maintaining their simplicity. The antenna consists of a rectangular microstrip with a fractal Tshaped slot, cut at the rear of the microstrip to provide an air gap for an improved radiation pattern.

Internet of Things (IoT) is an ever-evolving technological paradigm that is reshaping industries and societies globally. Real-time data collection, analysis, and decision-making facilitated by localization solutions form the foundation for location-based services, enabling them to support critical functions within diverse IoT ecosystems. However, most existing works on localization focus on single environment, resulting in the development of multiple models to support multiple environments. In the context of smart cities, these raise costs and complexity due to the dynamicity of such environments. To address these challenges, this paper presents a unified indoor-outdoor localization solution that leverages transfer learning (TL) schemes to build a single deep learning model. The model accurately predicts the localization of IoT devices in diverse environments.
