Abstract

RESUMEN El boro (B) es un micronutriente esencial para la mayoría de las plantas, pero es muy tóxico a altas concentraciones. En éste trabajo se evaluó la actividad transcripcional de tres genes relacionados al estrés, en condiciones de exceso de B, utilizando el tomate Poncho Negro, un cultivar originario del valle de Lluta (Arica, Chile), el cual crece y se desarrolla en ambientes con concentraciones muy altas B. Plántulas de tomate Poncho Negro, crecidas en hidroponía, fueron estresadas con un exceso de 30 ppm de B y muestras de raíz y hoja fueron colectadas a las 3 y 96 h. Se analizó la actividad de tres genes relacionados al estrés Hsp90, MT y GR, mediante de PCR en tiempo real. Una marcada diferencia en la respuesta molecular fue observada entre hojas y raíces. En hojas, los tres genes fueron sobre-expresados en respuesta al exceso B. En raíces, la actividad de Hsp90 disminuye, MT aumenta y GR1 no cambia su actividad bajo un estrés inducido por un exceso de B. La activación de estos genes puede indi car la participación de genes involucrados en procesos estrés oxidativo como una respuesta temprana a un estrés por B y puede representar un mecanismo complementario al transporte de B. ABSTRACT Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient for higher plants, but is very toxic at higher concentrations. This study evaluated the tran-scriptional activity of three stress-related genes under conditions of excess B in Solanum lycopersicum cv Poncho Negro, a cultivar originating from the Lluta Valley (Arica, Chile), where it grows in environments with very high concentrations of B. Poncho Negro tomato seedlings were grown under hydroponic conditions and stressed with B (20 ppm); root and leaf samples were collected at 3 and 96 h after stress. The activity of three stress-related genes, Hsp90, MT and GR, was analyzed by quantitative reverse transcrip-tion PCR. A marked differential molecular response was observed between leaves and roots. The three genes were overexpressed in leaves in response to B, while in roots Hsp90 decreased, MT increased and GR1 did not change its activity. Activation of these genes may indicate participation of genes involved in stress oxidative processes as an early response to B stress and may represent a complementary mechanism to boron transport.

Abstract

Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) is important for its high protein content, as the nutritional value of its grain is due partly to the amount of protein higher than that of other cereals. Grains form in the inflorescences and their architecture depend on whether growth is determinate or indeterminate. By means of scanning electron microscopy and thinning techniques, we obtained images of the morphological changes of the apical meristem during the life cycle of the plant. That tissue remained undifferentiated in the indeterminate phenotype and the inflorescence was spiked, the apical meristem stopped its activity with the formation of each terminal flower, originating a synchronized development. The development of the inflorescence in determinate growth did not present phenological overlap. The branches of this last phenotype were shorter. The seeds of plants with determinate growth were heavier than those of indeterminate growth. The study of apical meristem morphology could be the basis for the analysis of morphogenetic aspects of development, which at the same time are support for the genetic improvement and agronomic management of A. hypochondriacus. Abstract

The pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important crop in Mexico due to its growing demand in recent years. Therefore, alternatives should be sought to increase their production, one of them is the use of growth regulators, of which gibberellins are important growth regulators involved in mooring and fruit development, flowering, cell elongation and expansion in plants. In order to evaluate the effect of the application of gibberellins (GA3) on the yield of jalapeño pepper produced in greenhouse, the present investigation was carried out in two successive experiments. In experiment 1, five doses of gibberellins were evaluated: 0 (control), 10, 30, 50 and 500 mg L-1 that were sprayed in one and two applications. The fertilization in this experiment was with nutritive solution (N, P, K and microelements). In experiment 2 the same doses of GA3 were evaluated, also in one and two applications, but the fertilization was carried out with calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate soluble in water. In experiment 1, no increase in yield was detected. In contrast, in experiment 2, the 10 mg L-1 dose of GA3 in combination with the fertilization with calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate increased the yield of jalapeño pepper. 28. Quality of the parenchymatous tissue of Opuntiaand its use in the development of set yogurt

Abstract

In this study, the nutraceutical characteristics of the parenchymatous tissue powder of Opuntia robustawere studied, and in yogurt supplemented with parenchymatous tissue powder, the nutraceutical, physicochemical and textural characteristics were evaluated. The functional properties indicated that the parenchymatous tissue powder of Opuntia robustahad a high water holding capacity (4.2 g water/g powder) and medium oil holding capacity (1.3 g oil/g powder), while the highest emulsifying property was reached in the 4% solution. The antioxidant activity of the parenchymatous tissue powder is similar to those reported by other authors, and for this reason, it could be used as an ingredient in foodstuff elaboration. The yogurt supplemented with the parenchymatous tissue powder of Opuntia robustarevealed that the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were higher than those in the yogurt control and increased the moisture content of the samples. The addition of parenchymatous tissue powder in the yogurt generated particles with a compact, dense and flaky structure, while in the yogurt samples without parenchymatous tissue powder, a higher porosity level was observed. A more intense yellowish and dark color in parenchymatous tissue powder-fortified yogurts compared to the control was observed; an increase in the adhesive force value was found when only parenchymatous tissue powder was added as an ingredient of fortification. The results of this study thereby demonstrate that parenchymatous tissue powder is a good candidate for the supplementation of yogurt and other foodstuffs.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCysteine-rich receptor-like protein kinases (CRKs) are transmembrane proteins containing two domains of unknown function 26 (DUF26) RLKs in their ectodomain. Despite that CRKs control important aspects of plant development, only few proteins have functionally been characterized. In this work, we analyzed the function of CRK33 by characterizing two insertional lines. The stomatal density and stomatal index were decreased in crk33-2and crk33-3plants in comparison to wild-type plants, correlating with a decreased transpiration in transgenic plants and a higher drought tolerance. Furthermore, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance changed. Finally, all four stomata cell fate genes were upregulated, especially the expression of TMMand SPCHin the mutant background, suggesting a role for CRK33 in stomatal spacing.
