1. Investigating the impact of a window air conditioner with H-14 HEPA filter on lessening SARS-COV-2 aerosols

Abstract: Abstract This research breaks new ground by proposing a unique solution to combat SARS-COV-2 aerosols: modifying a readily available window air conditioner’s indoor blower to accommodate a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. While traditional public health measures like lockdowns and mask-wearing remain crucial, this study explores an innovative engineering approach to air purification within homes and offices. The widespread impact of COVID-19 across various sectors—agriculture, manufacturing, finance, and more—necessitates exploring diverse solutions. Current efforts to utilize HEPA filters in HVAC systems face limitations. These filters, while highly effective at capturing airborne particles, increasingly impede airflow and require substantial pressure, posing challenges for standard HVAC systems to maintain efficient operation. This study addresses this critical gap by proposing a targeted modification to a specific window air conditioner (AC) model (GJC07AF-K3RNB9D) to incorporate an H-14 HEPA filter. Utilizing cutting-edge design tool (CF-TURBO) and advanced simulation software (STARCCM +), the research will provide a new blower specifically optimized for this application. This virtual testing will meticulously evaluate the modified system’s performance, ensure optimal airflow, predict noise levels, and identify any potential design flaws before implementing the modification in a physical prototype. The success of this study could pave the way for the development of increasingly efficient and accessible HEPA-based air purification solutions for everyday use, particularly in areas with limited resources. Furthermore, this research can be a valuable foundation for future work aimed to increasingly improve indoor air quality (IAQ).

2. HPLC fingerprint profile, in-vitro cytotoxicity and anti-herpes simplex virus activity of methanol extract from Strophanthus hispidus DC (Stem bark).

Abstract: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is quite common in adults and neonates and is associated with oral mucocutaneous lesions and/or genital infections. Therefore, the aim of this present study was to determine the in-vitro cytotoxicity and anti-herpes simplex virus (1 and 2) activity of methanol extract of Strophanthus hispidus (S. hispidus ) DC (Stem bark) and his HPLC fingerprint profile. The cytotoxicity test on Vero cells was performed by MTT assay and various concentrations of extract less than the maximum nontoxic concentration were used against Vero cells for anti-HSV-1 and ant-HSV-2 effects by plaque assay. The CC50 values of methanolic extracts of S. hispidus (stem bark) and acyclovir against Vero cells were 94.46 µg/mL and 118.78 µg/mL, respectively. Whereas the EC50 and selectivity index values of this extract against herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2 strains were 36.60 µg/mL (SI=2.58) and 39.47 µg/mL (SI=2.39), respectively. HPLC finger-printing of this extract was developed and showed seven major compounds including ascorbic acid, quercetin, resorcinol and gallic acid represented in large amount. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of Strophanthus hispidus DC(stem bark) has good antiherpetic activity against HSV- 1 and HSV-2 but it is also highly toxic. Therefore, it will be important to separate toxic molecules from those responsible of the antiherpetic activity by bio guided fractionation procedures.

Abstract: Abstract Designing an organic polymer photocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution with visible and near-infrared (NIR) light activity is still a major challenge. Unlike the common behavior of gradually increasing the charge recombination while shrinking the bandgap, we present here a series of polymer nanoparticles (Pdots) based on ITIC and BTIC units with different π-linkers between the acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) repeated moieties of the polymer. These polymers act as an efficient single polymer photocatalyst for H2 evolution under both visible and NIR light, without combining or hybridizing with other materials. Importantly, the difluorothiophene (ThF) π-linker facilitates the charge transfer between acceptors of different repeated moieties (A-D-A-(π-Linker)-A-D-A), leading to the enhancement of charge separation between D and A. As a result, the PITIC-ThF Pdots exhibit superior hydrogen evolution rates of 279 µmol/h and 20.5 µmol/h with visible (>420 nm) and NIR (>780 nm) light irradiation, respectively. Furthermore, PITIC-ThF Pdots exhibit a promising apparent quantum yield (AQY) at 700 nm (4.76%).

Abstract: Abstract Background Previous meta-analyses estimating the prevalence of the post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) were confounded by the lack of negative control groups. This may result in an overestimation of the prevalence of those experiencing PCC, as these symptoms are non-specific and common in the general population. In this study, we aimed to compare the burden of persistent symptoms among COVID-19 survivors relative to COVID-19-negative controls. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted using the following databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) until July 2023 for comparative studies that examined the prevalence of persistent symptoms in COVID-19 survivors. Given that many of the symptoms among COVID-19 survivors overlap with post-hospitalization syndrome and post-intensive care syndrome, we included studies that compare the prevalence of persistent symptoms in hospitalized COVID-19 patients relative to non-COVID-19 hospitalized patients and in non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients relative to healthy controls that reported outcomes after at least 3 months since infection. The results of the meta-analysis were reported as odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval based on the random effects model. Results Twenty articles were included in this study. Our analysis of symptomatology in non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to negative controls revealed that the majority of symptoms examined were not related to COVID-19 infection and appeared equally prevalent in both cohorts. 5. Valorization of Afzelia bella oilseeds cake in bioethanol production using 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ionic liquid and dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment

Abstract: The use of renewable feedstocks and the variability of lignocellulosic feedstocks generating fermentable sugars also offer the advantages of the most abundant, sustainable and competitive non-food biomass. The aim of this study is to valorize the oilcake obtained from non-conventional Congolese Afzelia bella oilseeds, after extraction of the oil used in biodiesel production. The conversion of A. bella oilseeds cake into ethanol was carried out using the two methods of pretreatment (with the synthesized ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride and dilute sulfuric acid), followed by hydrolysis with dilute sulfuric acid and fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The lignocellulosic composition of the sample was 47.98% cellulose, 28.15% hemicellulose and 22.3% lignin. Pretreatment with 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride (ionic liquid) showed an increase in cellulose content of around 4.25% and hemicellulose content of around 7.7%, with simultaneous delignification of 12.25%. In contrast, with dilute sulfuric acid, the lignin and cellulose content of the sample fell to 3.88% and 1.88% respectively. Hemicellulose content, on the other hand, increased by only 3.58%. After dilute acid hydrolysis (5% H2SO4), the values for total reducing sugar, glucose and xylose were 66.06±1.34 mg.g-1; 36.25 ± 1.2 mg.g-1 and 29.71 ± 0.6 mg.g-1 respectively. The percentage conversion of sugars was 55.16 ± 0.5% for cellulose to glucose and 53.76 ± 0.75% for hemicellulose to xylose. The hydrolyzed product of the complex polysaccharide was then converted to ethanol using commercial yeast. Results showed an ethanol yield of around 10.3%, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results confirmed bioethanol production. A. bella oilseeds cakes are therefore a potential source for ethanol production.

6. Evaluation of vertical accuracy of TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Model in Egypt

Abstract: The study conducted aimed to examine the accuracy of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in Egypt, specifically the TanDEM-X mission's 30 m and 12 m resolution DEMs and the SRTM DEM with a 30 m resolution. The accuracy of DEMs is essential for various civil engineering and surveying applications, especially in geoscience applications. To ensure the comparison's accuracy, the study used ellipsoidal heights instead of orthometric heights, preventing errors caused by global geopotential models in the conversion process. The evaluation of the three DEMs was carried out using 352 GNSS points. The findings indicate that both TanDEM-X DEMs with 30 m and 12 m resolutions outperform the SRTM 30 m in terms of vertical accuracy, making them ideal for geomatic applications that require higher-resolution DEMs. The TanDEM-X 30 m generates a standard deviation (STD) and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of approximately 3.03 m and 3.45 m, respectively. On the other hand, the TanDEM-X 12 m generates an STD and RMSE of approximately 2.86 m and 3.18 m, respectively. Comparatively, the SRTM 30 m produces an STD and RMSE of approximately 4.67 m and 5.35 m, respectively.

7. Marine gravity modelling from SARAL/AltiKA data using the Least Square Collocation for the Red Sea

Abstract: Marine gravity has been modeled using satellite radar altimetry for more than two decades. However, the accuracy of the predicted gravity field is constrained by the range precision and spatial coverage of the altimetry observations. The objective of this research is to enhance the gravity field over the Red Sea by utilizing the Least Square Collocation (LSC) algorithm with SARAL/AltiKA mission observations. The marine gravity field in the Red Sea was determined by using observed Sea Surface Heights (SSHs) obtained from the SARAL/AltiKA mission. The Remove-Compute-Restore (RCR) technique, the Residual Terrain Modelling (RTM) reduction method, and the LSC technique are used to estimate the marine gravity. To evaluate the accuracy of the SARAL/AltiKA predicted model, it was compared against two global altimetry gravity models (DTU21 and SSv29.1) using 42331 shipborne gravity measurements over the Red Sea. The SARAL/AltiKA predicted model showed the best results, with root mean square error and standard deviation values of 6.29 and 5.93 mGal, respectively. The impact of bathymetry depths on the SARAL/AltiKA predicted gravity model accuracy was also investigated. The SARAL/AltiKA predicted gravity model produced better results for water depths up to 1000 m when compared with shipborne data, while the SSv29.1 model performed better for depths between 1000 and 3000 m due to the performance of the residual slopes of the SSH estimation technique used in the deep areas.

8. Study of Cosavirus, Salivirus, and Bufavirus viruses in children with acute gastroenteritis

Abstract: Abstract Background Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children represents a health problem. Besides common enteric viruses such as rotavirus and adenovirus, new viruses such as cosavirus, salivirus, and bufavirus may be associated with AGE. The objective of the study was to detect cosavirus, salivirus, and bufavirus viruses in children below 5 years with acute gastroenteritis by the use of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) besides detection of rotavirus and adenovirus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Method The study included 150 children ≤ 5 years with community-acquired diarrhea. Stool samples from children were subjected for the detection of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens by ELISA and for detection of buvavirus, salivirus, and cosavirus by real-time PCR. Results The commonest virus detected in the stool samples of children with AGE was rotavirus 31.3% followed by adenovirus 24%. Among the new viruses studied, salivirus was detected in six samples (4.0%), buvavirus was detected in four samples (2.7%), and cosavirus was detected in two samples (1.3%). The mixed rotavirus detection with studied viruses was 23.4% for adenovirus, 4.3% for calicivirus, and 2.1% for bocavirus, and none of the detected cosavirus was associated with rotavirus. In the studied children, at least one of the new viruses was detected in ten children (6.7%). Buvavirus, salivirus, and cosavirus were detected as a single virus (0.7%) in the children with acute gastroenteritis and buvavirus was detected with cosavirus without other viruses in one sample (0.7%). Conclusion The study reports the occurrence of buvavirus, cosavirus, and salivirus in the pediatric patients with community-acquired acute gastroenteritis. There was a high prevalence of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens in those patients with low positivity for buvavirus, cosavirus, and salivirus viruses. There is a need for a large cohort study to study the prevalence of buvavirus, cosavirus, and salivirus in pediatrics with acute gastroenteritis and to validate their association with the disease.

9. Synthesis, in-vitro antitubercular, antifungal activities and in silico molecular docking study of Chalcone derivatives from 1-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl)-3-(substituted-phenyl)-2-propenone.

Abstract: Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major global health problems and faced to the increased resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains against existing antitubercular agents, it is important to look for new antitubercular drugs. Aims: The goal of this work was to synthesize four chalcones derivatives from 1-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(substituted-phenyl)-2-propenone, then evaluate their antitubercular and antifungal activities by standard computational and biological methods. Methods: These chalcones were synthesized by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation and their structures have been determined by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR 1H and 13C) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The in vitroantimycobacterial and antifungal assays were carried out by the microdilution method against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (ATCC 27294), H37Ra (ATCC 25177), and Candida albicans (MTCC 1637), respectively. The molecular docking of these chalcones was performed by AutoDock vina program using Mycobacterial tuberculosis Thymidylate Kinase (PDB ID: 1G3U) and dihydrofolate reductase (PDB ID 1AI9) as target ligand. Results: All synthesized chalcones showed good and moderated antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (virulent strains ATCC 27294), H37Ra (the attenuated strains ATCC 25177) with a range of MICs ranging from 4 to 64 µg/mL. Regarding antifungal activity, all synthesized chalcones were active against Candida albicans strains (MTCC 1637) with a range of MICs ranging from 16 to 128 µg/mL. Based on absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties, all chalcones synthetized satisfied the Lipinski rule. Conclusion: The results suggest that the synthesized chalcones, especially the (E)-3-(4- (dimethylamino) phenyl)-1-(2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethoxyphenyl) prop-2-en-1-one could be used, after in vivo and clinical tests, like antitubercular and antifungal supplement or even replace current drug therapies.

10. Refinement of the Kuwait geoid using the modified Stokes' kernel and Airy-Heiskanen isostatic reduction for GIS and geomatics applications

Abstract: Orthometric heights are important for various applications such as GIS, geomatics, engineering, and geoscience. The ellipsoidal heights can be computed by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as an accurate, rapid, and efficient method for height determination. The accurate geoid is essential to convert the ellipsoidal heights from GNSS to orthometric heights. The research developed a new geoid called “KW-FWGM2022″ specifically for Kuwait. We used a composite global geopotential model from SPW R5 with EGM2008 and the digital elevation model from SRTM1. The Wong and Gore modified with Airy-Heiskanen topographic-isotactic reduction were used to compute the geoid model. To assess the accuracy of the KW-FWGM2022 geoid, GNSS/leveling stations were used and the assessment showed that the model's accuracy was better than 1.8 cm as a standard deviation. This demonstrates that the KW-FWGM2022 geoid model is highly accurate and suitable for use in various GIS and Geomatics applications in Kuwait.

11. Assessment of changing satellite gravity mission architectures using terrestrial gravity and GNSS-leveling data in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This research investigates the effect of the ‘future’ gravity mission (FGM) architectures i.e. Bender, Helix, Pendulum, and Cartwheel up to spherical harmonics (SH) degree/order (d/o) 120/120 to improve the estimation of the gravitational field in the Saudi Arabia. For this purpose, we evaluate ground-truth gravity anomalies and GNSS/Leveling data with the satellite-based gravity models of each aforementioned FGMs. The comparison with gravity anomalies given by the FGM provides refinements of about 57 – 61 μGal with respect to (w.r.t.) those of GRACE- and GOCE-based GGMs. The comparison with GNSS/Leveling indicates that the least differences in terms of standard deviations (STD) of geoid heights are provided by the Bender-type FGM that provides the overall least STD differences of about 62.58 cm w.r.t. the GRACE- and GOCE-based GGMs, that provide STD differences of about 62.88 cm and 62.62 cm, respectively. The outcome of this study shows that implementing additional gravity information in different flight directions of the proposed FGMs (i.e along-track, cross-track, and radial) showed slight improvement (sub of a millimeter).

Abstract: Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

14. Skip Metastasis in Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Is it Predictable?

Abstract: Background: Cervical lymph node metastasis is a prognostic factor in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Metastasizing PTC to cervical lymph nodes is very common and occurs in 30-80% of patients. Aim: To investigate the risk factors of skip lateral lymph node metastasis in PTC patients. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a single institution and included PTC patients treated in the period between 2018 and 2021. All patients with PTC who underwent total thyroidectomy with central and lateral block neck dissection were reviewed for skip metastases which was confirmed by histopathologic examination. Results: During the study period, 267 patients with PTC underwent total thyroidectomy with central and/or lateral block neck dissection. Among them, only 64 patients matched the study inclusion criteria and their pathology was reviewed for skip metastases. Thirteen (20.3%) patients showed skip metastases. Their mean (±SD) age was 50.1 (±16.7) years and 8 (61.5%) were females. Only age ≥40 years and tumor size ≤0.5 cm differed significantly between patients with skip metastasis and those without. Conclusions: The results support the conduction of a prospective multi-centric study with a larger sample size to better understand the risk factors for developing skip metastasis in PTC. This would help in selecting patients with a risk for skip metastasis.

Abstract: Since 2010, a slew of new satellite altimetry missions has started providing gravity data generated from altimetry with worldwide coverage and high quality that rivals shipborne gravity measurements in several areas. As a result, worldwide offshore high-resolution gravity fields have considerably improved. This paper aims to compare two altimetry gravity models i.e. DTU21 and SSv29.1 with shipborne gravity measurements to evaluate their accuracies over the Red Sea. At first, the DTU21 and SSv29.1 altimetry models were compared with the shipborne data at different water depths to evaluate the impact of bathymetry depths on the accuracy. The corresponding results revealed that the DTU21 gravity model gave the best results in the comparison of all shipborne with a standard deviation (s.d.) of 7.37 mGal and a Root Mean Square (RMS) of 8.73 mGal, while the SSv29.1 model achieve an s.d. of 8.50 mGal and an RMS of 8.81 mGal. In water depths less than 1000 m the DTU21 model gives the best results in terms of s.d. and RMS, while the SSv29.1 model achieves better results at water depths ranging between 1000 m and 3000 m.

Matériels et méthodes -Dans notre étude, prospective et comparative, 57 patients ont subi une chirurgie cardiaque, répartis en 2 groupes, 30 patients opérés par sternotomie médiane verticale et 27 patients opérés par chirurgie mini-invasive vidéo-assistée. Les données préopératoires, opératoires et postopératoires ont été collectées et analysées. Résultats - l’âge moyen est 49.5+16.3 ans dans le groupe mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et 43.4+16.7 dans le groupe sternotomie médiane verticale. Le signe le plus fréquent était la dyspnée. Les patients asymptomatiques représentent 11% dans le groupe sternotomie médiane verticale et 43% dans le groupe mini-invasive vidéo-assistée.La chirurgie de la valve mitrale dans 63% patients opérés par la mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et 66.6% par sternotomie médiane verticale. La moyenne du temps de la circulation extracorporelle était de119.52+44.5 min dans le groupe mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et 84.53+34.2 min dans l’autre groupe. La moyenne du clampage aortique dans le groupe mini-invasive vidéo-assistée était 94.56+40.8 min et dans le groupe sternotomie médiane verticale était de 59.53+25.5 min. La moyenne de ventilation mécanique était de 4.7+1.8 heures dans le groupe mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et de 7.9±2.4 heures dans le groupe sternotomie médiane verticale. La douleur post-opératoire disparait dans (73%) des cas au 2ème jour postopératoire en mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et dans (70%) au 5ème jour en sternotomie médiance verticale. La moyenne de séjour hospitalier 8.67+3.8 jours en mini-invasive vidéo-assistée et de 13.8+5.0jours en sternotomie médiane verticale. La reprise des activités physiques était très précoce après une chirurgie mini-invasive. Conclusion -la procédure mini-invasive vidéo-assistée est une alternative simple, sûre et efficace. D’excellents résultats sont obtenus avec une faible morbidité. Cette procédure offre une convalescence rapide. English Abstract: Background-Vertical median sternotomy has been the best approach to cardiac surgery. While the conventional approach is traumatic, with many complications, using a video camera in surgery offers smaller incisions. Methods - Our study was a prospective and comparative one. Our sample consisted of 57 patients, divided into 2 groups, including 30 patients operated by vertical median sternomtomy and 27 patients operated by minimally invasive video-assisted surgery. Faster recovery of physical activities after minimally invasive surgery was reported. Conclusion - The minimally invasive video-assisted is a simpler, safer and more effective procedure with excellent results and low morbidity. This procedure results in a short -er recovery time.

17. Gaming behavior disorder and its association with social phobia during COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study among the young Arabs

Abstract: BackgroundGaming addiction is a compulsive mental health condition that can have severe negative consequences on a person’s life. As online gaming has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have shown a heightened risk of mental health issues. This study aims to assess the prevalence of severe phobia and addiction to online gaming among Arab adolescents and identify risk factors associated with these disorders.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted across 11 Arab nations. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling through an online survey distributed on social media platforms in 11 Arab countries. The survey included demographic questions, the Nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS-SF9) to measure participants’ online gaming addiction, the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), and questions assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of internet gaming addiction. The data were analyzed using SPSS win statistical package version 26.ResultsOut of 2,458 participants, 2,237 were included in the sample due to non-response and missing data. The average age of the participants was 19.9 ± 4.8 years, and the majority were Egyptian and unmarried. 69% of the participants reported playing more than usual since the COVID-19 pandemic, as they were confined to their homes. Higher social phobia scores were associated with being single, male, and Egyptian. Participants from Egypt and those who felt that the pandemic significantly increased their gaming time had higher scores for online gaming addiction. Several major criteria, such as playing hours per day and beginning gaming at an early age, were associated with a higher level of online gaming addiction with social phobia.ConclusionThe study’s findings suggest that there is a high prevalence of internet gaming addiction among Arab adolescents and young adults who play online games. The results also indicate a significant association between social phobia and several sociodemographic factors, which may inform future interventions and treatments for individuals with gaming addiction and social phobia.

Abstract: The goal of this research is to assess the accuracy of the global geopotential models (GGMs) from 2018 until the present in the Red Sea. The assessment was done by using the gravitational spectral analysis of models with each other and with the comparison with the shipborne gravity anomalies gathered along the Red Sea. In this study, combined models such as (XGM2019e 2159, SGG-UGM 2 and SGG-UGM 1) and satellite-only models such as (GOSG01S, IGGT R1C, Grace02k, DIR R6, GOCO06s, TIM R6 and Grace2018s) are studied. Firstly, all studied GGMs were subjected to gravitational spectral analysis. The statistical results indicate that the combined models outperform the satellite-only models before overcoming the spectral gap. The DIR R6 model is the most reliable of the satellite-only GGMs investigated in this study, exhibiting superior behaviour in all aspects when compared to the other satellite-only GGMs. In addition, the SGG-UGM 2 model is the best of the combined model of this research. Nonetheless, The DIR R6 model showed the best results in band gravitational analysis with spectral enhancement technique.

Abstract: The most common inherited condition that results in death, particularly in those of Caucasian heritage, is cystic fibrosis (CF). Of all the young adults diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, 20% will develop hyperglycemia as a complication, later classified as a disease associated with cystic fibrosis. Impaired insulin secretion and glucose intolerance represent the primary mechanisms associated with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and cystic fibrosis. Oxidative stress represents the imbalance between oxygen-reactive species and antioxidant defense mechanisms. This pathogenic mechanism is vital in triggering other chronic diseases, including cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. It is essential to understand oxidative stress and the significant impact it has on CFRD. This way, therapies can be individually adjusted and tailored to each patient’s needs. This review aims to understand the connection between CFRD and oxidative stress. As a subsidiary element, we analyzed the effects of glycemic balance on complications and their evolution over time, providing insights into their potential benefits in mitigating oxidative stress-associated complications.

Abstract: Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a destructive disease that causes significant yield losses in wheat production worldwide, including in Egypt. The use of biocontrol agents is among the best eco-friendly management strategies to control this disease, as they are more sustainable and environmentally friendly than traditional chemical control methods. In a comparative analysis, antioxidant enzyme activity and various management approaches were compared with two bacterial biocontrol agents, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas putida. This study showed the remarkable efficacy of endophytic bacteria, B. subtilis and P. putida, in mitigating wheat stripe rust infection across three wheat varieties, namely Misr1, Gimmeiza11, and Sids12. B. subtilis exhibited superior performance compared to P. putida, resulting in infection types of 1 and 2.66, respectively, following inoculation. The highest reduction rate was observed with Tilit fungicide (500 ppm), followed by B. subtilis and Salicylic acid (1000 ppm), respectively. Variations in wheat varieties’ response to Pst infection were observed, with Misr1 exhibiting the lowest infection and Sids12 showing high susceptibility. Among the tested inducers, Salicylic acid demonstrated the greatest reduction in disease infection, followed by Indole acetic acid, while Oxalic acid exhibited the lowest decrease. Additionally, the study evaluated the activities of five antioxidant enzymes, including Catalase, Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POX), in the wheat-stripe rust interaction under different integrated management approaches. The wheat variety Misr1 treated with Tilit (500 ppm), B. subtilis, Salicylic acid, Montoro (500 ppm), and P. putida exhibited the highest increase in all enzymatic activities. These findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of B. subtilis and P. putida as biocontrol agents for wheat stripe rust control in Egypt, emphasizing their potential role in sustainable, integrated, and environmentally friendly management practices.

Abstract: Objectives Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (PIs) are a source of morbidity and mortality, and many are potentially preventable.Design This study prospectively evaluated the prevalence and the associated factors of PIs in adult critical care patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) in the UK.Setting This service evaluation was part of a larger, international, single-day point prevalence study of PIs in adult ICU patients. Training was provided to healthcare givers using an electronic platform to ensure standardised recognition and staging of PIs across all sites.Participants The characteristics of the ICUs were recorded before the survey; deidentified patient data were collected using a case report form and uploaded onto a secure online platform.Primary and secondary outcome measures Factors associated with ICU-acquired PIs in the UK were analysed descriptively and using mixed multiple logistic regression analysis.Results Data from 1312 adult patients admitted to 94 UK ICUs were collected. The proportion of individuals with at least one PI was 16% (211 out of 1312 patients), of whom 8.8% (n=115/1312) acquired one or more PIs in the ICU and 7.3% (n=96/1312) prior to ICU admission. The total number of PIs was 311, of which 148 (47.6%) were acquired in the ICU. The location of majority of these PIs was the sacral area, followed by the heels. Braden score and prior length of ICU stay were associated with PI development.Conclusions The prevalence and the stage of severity of PIs were generally low in adult critically ill patients admitted to participating UK ICUs during the study period. However, PIs are a problem in an important minority of patients. Lower Braden score and longer length of ICU stay were associated with the development of injuries; most ICUs assess risk using tools which do not account for this.Trial registration number NCT03270345.

Abstract: Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is considered a sustainable and environmentally friendly technology for using solar energy to produce fresh water, which is a crucial resource for the existence of human life. Porous membranes are widely used in SDIE owing to their porous structure, which is highly suitable for this kind of photothermal material and allows an efficient supply of water and escape of vapor during the evaporation process. Electrospinning is perhaps the most versatile technique to produce highly porous structures of nanofiber membranes with a large surface-to-volume ratio, high porosity, low density, and many advantages. Nevertheless, acquiring a stronger background on the initial research questions in this enticing field of research needs further investigation. Typically, for the enhancement of process control, the impact of flow rate on the morphology of the prepared membrane is quite important. This research article has two-fold objectives: firstly, it discusses the fundamental description of the photothermal conversion mechanism of polymer-based photothermal materials for water treatment. A systematic investigation supported by previous studies revealing the working mechanism and the design of solar-driven interfacial evaporation has been provided. On the other hand, our interim experimental results elaborate on the influence of process conditions such as electrospinning parameters on the structural morphology and diameter of fabricated electrospun nanofibers produced by using the coaxial electrospinning setup in our lab. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the morphology of the electrospun nanofibers. Our introductory results provide a useful insight into tuning the necessary process parameters to fabricate electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membranes by electrospinning technique. From our preliminary results after the three processing experiments, it is revealed that a polymer concentration of 10% wt., an applied voltage of 20 kV, a tip-to-collector distance of 18 cm, and a flow rate of 0.8 mL/h produce the optimum nanofiber membranes with a uniform structure and a diameter in the range 304–394 nm. The variation in the diameter of nanofibers in the three processing conditions is endowed by the regulation of the initiating droplet extruded from the tip of the metallic needle (syringe jet) to the collector using the electrospinning setup.

25. A High-Resolution Gravimetric Geoid Model for Kuwait Using the Least-Squares Collocation

Abstract: A new gravimetric geoid model, the KW-FLGM2021, is developed for Kuwait in this study. This new geoid model is driven by a combination of the XGM2019e-combined global geopotential model (GGM), terrestrial gravity, and the SRTM 3 global digital elevation model with a spatial resolution of three arc seconds. The KW-FLGM2021 has been computed by using the technique of Least Squares Collocation (LSC) with Remove-Compute-Restore (RCR) procedure. To evaluate the external accuracy of the KW-FLGM2021 gravimetric geoid model, GPS/leveling data were used. As a result of this evaluation, the residual of geoid heights obtained from the KW-FLGM2021 geoid model is 2.2 cm. The KW-FLGM2021 is possible to be recommended as the first accurate geoid model for Kuwait.

In this contribution, the sixth release of GRACE-FO (RL06) level-2 products applying DDK5 (decorrelation filter) were used to detect water mass variations for the Nile River Basin (NRB) in Africa and the Mega Aquifer System (MAS) in Asia. The following approach was implemented to detect the mass variation over the NRB and MAS: (1) TWS mass (June 2018–June 2021) was estimated by converting the spherical harmonic coefficients from the decorrelation filter DDK 5 of the GRACE-FO Level-2 RL06 products into equivalent water heights, where the TWS had been re-produced after removing the mean temporal signal (2) Precipitation data from Global Precipitation Climatology Project was used to investigate the pattern of change over the study area. Our findings include: (1) during the GRACE-FO period, the mass variations extracted from the RL06-DDK5 solutions from the three official centers—CSR, JPL, and GFZ—were found to be consistent with each other, (2) The NRB showed substantial temporal TWS variations, given a basin average of about 6 cm in 2019 and about 12 cm in 2020 between September and November and a lower basin average of about −9 cm in 2019 and −6 cm in 2020 in the wet seasons between March and May, while mass variations for the MAS had a relatively weaker temporal TWS magnitude, (3) the observed seasonal signal over the NRB was attributed to the high intensity of the precipitation events over the NRB (AAP: 1000–1800 mm yr−1), whereas the lack of the seasonal TWS signal over the MAS was due to the low intensity of the precipitation events over the MAS (AAP:180–500 mm yr−1).

27. Vascular endothelial growth factor and pulmonary hypertension in children with beta thalassemia major

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to illustrate the association between vascular endothelial growth factor level and pulmonary artery hypertension in children with β‐thalassemia major. Method: This case–control study was conducted on 116 children with β‐thalassemia major; 58 of them had pulmonary artery hypertension. They were compared to 58 healthy children who were age and sex‐matched (control group). Serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and echocardiographic assessment were done for all children. Results: Vascular endothelial growth factor serum level was significantly higher in children with β‐thalassemia major with pulmonary artery hypertension than in those without pulmonary artery hypertension, as well as in control groups (p 169 pg/mL had 93.1% sensitivity and 93.1% specificity for the presence of pulmonary artery hypertension in children with β‐thalassemia major. Conclusion: Elevated vascular endothelial growth factor serum level is associated with pulmonary artery hypertension in children with β‐thalassemia. Resumo: Objetivo: A finalidade deste estudo foi exemplificar a associação entre o nível de fator de crescimento endotelial vascular e a hipertensão arterial pulmonar em crianças com talassemia beta maior. Método: Este estudo caso‐controle foi realizado em 116 crianças com talassemia beta maior; 58 das quais apresentaram hipertensão arterial pulmonar em comparação com 58 crianças saudáveis pareadas por idade e sexo (grupo de controle). Os níveis séricos do fator de crescimento endotelial vascular e a avaliação ecocardiográfica foram realizados em todas as crianças. Resultados: O nível sérico do fator de crescimento endotelial vascular foi significativamente maior em crianças com talassemia beta maior com hipertensão arterial pulmonar que as crianças sem hipertensão arterial pulmonar e os grupos de controle (p 169 (pg/mL) apresentou 93,1% de sensibilidade e 93,1% de especificidade na presença de hipertensão arterial pulmonar em crianças com talassemia beta maior. Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant status of plasma vitamin E and plasma and intracellular coenzyme Q10 in children with type 1 diabetes. Method: This case–control study was conducted on 72 children with type 1 diabetes and compared to 48 healthy children, who were age, sex, and ethnicity‐matched. The diabetic children were divided according to their glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c %) into two groups: poor and good glycemic control groups. All children underwent full history taking, clinical examination, and laboratory measurement of complete blood count, A1c %, plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, and vitamin E levels and coenzyme Q10 levels in plasma, erythrocytes, and platelets. Results: Children with poor glycemic control showed significantly higher plasma vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, triglycerides, low‐density lipoproteins, waist circumference/height ratio, cholesterol levels, and lower high‐density lipoproteins and platelet coenzyme Q10 redox status in comparison to those with good glycemic control and the control group (p

Abstract: Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, there is a lack of data available about SSI in children worldwide, especially from low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SSI in children and associations between SSI and morbidity across human development settings.Methods A multicentre, international, prospective, validated cohort study of children aged under 16 years undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty gastrointestinal surgery. Any hospital in the world providing paediatric surgery was eligible to contribute data between January and July 2016. The primary outcome was the incidence of SSI by 30 days. Relationships between explanatory variables and SSI were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Countries were stratified into high development, middle development and low development groups using the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI).Results Of 1159 children across 181 hospitals in 51 countries, 523 (45·1%) children were from high HDI, 397 (34·2%) from middle HDI and 239 (20·6%) from low HDI countries. The 30-day SSI rate was 6.3% (33/523) in high HDI, 12·8% (51/397) in middle HDI and 24·7% (59/239) in low HDI countries. SSI was associated with higher incidence of 30-day mortality, intervention, organ-space infection and other HAIs, with the highest rates seen in low HDI countries. Median length of stay in patients who had an SSI was longer (7.0 days), compared with 3.0 days in patients who did not have an SSI. Use of laparoscopy was associated with significantly lower SSI rates, even after accounting for HDI.Conclusion The odds of SSI in children is nearly four times greater in low HDI compared with high HDI countries. Policies to reduce SSI should be prioritised as part of the wider global agenda.

Abstract: Background: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a newly emerged coronavirus that is associated with a severe respiratory disease in humans in the Middle East. The epidemiological profiles of the MERS-CoV infections suggest zoonotic transmission from an animal reservoir to humans. Methods: This study was designed to investigate animal herds associated with Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-infected patients in Saudi Arabia, during the last three years (2014–2016). Nasal swabs and serum samples from 584 dromedary camels, 39 sheep, 51 goats, and 2 cattle were collected. Nasal samples from camels, sheep, goats, and cattle were examined by real-time reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) to detect MERS-CoV RNA, and the Anti-MERS ELISA assay was performed to detect camel humeral immune response (IgG) to MERS-CoV S1 antigen infection. The complete genome sequencing of ten MERS-CoV camel isolates and phylogenetic analysis was performed. Results: The data indicated that seventy-five dromedary camels were positive for MERS-CoV RNA; the virus was not detected in sheep, goats, and cattle. MERS-CoV RNA from infected camels was not detected beyond 2 weeks after the first positive result was detected in nasal swabs obtained from infected camels. Anti-MERS ELISA assays showed that 70.9% of camels related to human cases had antibodies to MERS-CoV. The full genome sequences of the ten MERS-CoV camel isolates were identical to their corresponding patients and were grouped together within the larger MERS-CoV sequences cluster for human and camel isolates reported form the Arabian Peninsula. Conclusions: These findings indicate that camels are a significant reservoir for the maintenance of MERS-CoVs, and they are an important source of human infection with MERS. Abstract: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, in which asthmatic patients present with different clinical phenotypes, variable endotypes, and different response to asthma medicines. Thus, we are faced with an asthma paradox; asthma is diagnosed subjectively by clinical history and treated with biologically active drugs. To solve this paradox, we need objective airway biomarkers to tailor the proper medications to the proper patient. Biomarkers should have one or more of the following characteristics: 1) could differentiate poor symptoms perceivers from over-perceivers, 2) could predict disease activity and hence disease outcome, 3) could clarify asthma phenotype responders from non-responders, and finally 4) could characterize different clinical asthma phenotypes. Therefore, we have conducted a review of literature trying to apply those four parameters to different airway inflammatory biomarkers. We found that FeNO fulfilled the four proposed clinical parameters of airway inflammatory biomarkers whereas; serum periostin was the single best systemic biomarker of airway luminal and tissue eosinophilia in severe uncontrolled TH2 asthma phenotype. Thus, this may be considered a trial towards tailoring the proper medication to the proper patient. However, application of biomarkers in clinical practice requires easier and cheaper techniques together with standardized methods for sample collection and analysis.
