Background: COVID-19 has killed over 6 million people worldwide, making it the worst global health disaster since the 1918 influenza pandemic. Experts have worked to establish the source, track and analyse the disease, and produce treatment and preventative guidelines. Inactivated vaccines have little evidence of efficacy compared to mRNA and adenoviral vector vaccines; however, three doses of both mRNA and inactivated vaccines appear to provide significant and lasting protection against severe disease and mortality. This study examines inactivated vaccine effectiveness data by disease status, age, gender, primary immunisation, booster doses, and SARS-CoV2 virus types. Methods: We conducted a quantitative epidemiological meta-analysis study to assess the vaccine effectiveness of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines. Data extraction was performed on the selected studies, and data analysis was conducted using a random-effects model to determine consolidated assessments of vaccine effectiveness. This is a systematic review of the literature on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its impact on tourism and heritage in participating countries along the Silk Roads. China launched the BRI in 2013 with the aim of promoting global trade and stimulating economic growth through the development of infrastructure and cultural cooperation. This review examines studies for the period from 2013 to 2023, focusing on key themes such as tourist flows, destination development, urban renewal, heritage preservation, and cultural route revival. The systematic review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, incorporating 56 relevant documents that cover both tourism and heritage domains. The findings highlight substantial potential for the development of new tourism products and destinations, improved urban renewal, and the preservation of cultural heritage, provided that integrated policies, public-private collaboration, and equitable community participation frameworks are implemented with attention to ecological limits. However, the review also identifies significant challenges, including financial imbalances, uneven access to benefits, social disruption, cultural commodification, and environmental degradation. Addressing these issues requires careful, context-specific planning. The study concludes with a proposal for a future research agenda that includes exploring underrepresented regions, developing sustainable tourism models, and fostering interdisciplinary research to ensure a balanced approach to economic development and heritage preservation. This review's findings provide valuable insight for policymakers, tourism officials, and cultural heritage managers, guiding the development of policies that balance economic growth with the preservation of cultural and natural heritage sites. This research contributes to the academic discourse by elucidating the complex interplay between the BRI and the Silk Roads' tourism and heritage, offering a pathway for sustainable and inclusive growth.

Background: Chemically induced cirrhotic animal models are commonly used. However, they have limitations such as high mortalities and low yield of cirrhotic animals that limit their uses.Aims: To overcome limitations of the chemically induced cirrhotic animal model via combined administration of methotrexate (MTX) with CCl4 and decrease their commonly used doses depending on the proposed synergetic cirrhotic effect.Methods: Rats were divided into six groups: normal (4 weeks), normal (8 weeks), MTX, CCl4 (4 weeks), CCl4 (8 weeks), and MTX + CCl4 (4 weeks) groups. Animals’ hepatic morphology and histopathological characterization were explored. Hepatic Bcl2 and NF-κB-p65 tissue contents were determined using the immunostaining technique, and hepatic tissue damage, oxidative status, and inflammatory status biochemical parameters were determined.Results: CCl4 + MTX combined administration produced prominent cirrhotic liver changes, further confirmed by a substantial increase in oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters, whereas mortalities were significantly lower than in other treated groups.Conclusion: The present study introduced a new model that can significantly improve the major limitations of chemically induced cirrhotic animal models with new pathological features that mimic human cirrhosis. Compared to other chemically induced methods, the present model can save time, cost, and animal suffering.

Energy consumption has become a requirement in the modern world, and without it, the economies of developing nations cannot prosper. Consistent economic growth is a challenge for countries of all economic levels, not just the less developed ones. We test the EKC hypothesis by analyzing the relationships between GDP growth, energy consumption, agricultural output, and the consequences of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. From 1991 to 2016, we used panel and quantile regression analysis to compare emissions in nine developing countries with those in 13 developed countries. There is the beginning of a reverse U-shaped relationship between agricultural energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the verified EKC hypothesis paves the way for a watershed moment in the progress of industrialized nations’ economies. As an added bonus, agricultural results have a positive impact on CO2 emissions from using liquid fuels. It has a negative impact on CO2 emissions by 19.12% and causes a 4.802 percent increase in environmental degradation. Feed cropping, deforestation, biomass burning, and deep soil and cropping also have negative effects on the environment, especially in developing countries. There is a negative correlation between CO2 emissions and economic growth in developing countries and their energy consumption. Although the EKC hypothesis for CO2 emissions was rejected at lower quantiles, it was validated for Qatar, Canada, China, and other high-emitting economies according to the empirical estimation of quantile regression. The findings of this study have important policy implications for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, suggesting that policymakers account for the stage of economic growth currently being experienced when formulating measures to cut energy use and protect the environment. Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub and one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, has experienced remarkable urban growth due to rapid urbanization. The city has recently faced persistent urban flooding due to unsustainable growth and inadequate data for proper planning. Therefore, we analyzed urban growth and land cover change in Lagos, Nigeria, using multi-temporal datasets downloaded from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at an interval of 10 years from 1990–2020. We employed the maximum likelihood classification and post-classification change detection to analyze the city’s urban growth and change dynamics. The study revealed three phases of growth in Lagos and a substantial increase in the city’s built-up area from 496 km2 in 1990 to approximately 860 km2 in 2000. This area increased further to 1113 km2 in 2010, and presently over 1256 km2. The result also revealed a substantial decrease in the city’s vegetation, water bodies, and bare soil by approximately 398 km2, 246 km2, and 115 km2, respectively, between 1990 and 2020. These changes contribute to urban flooding, the prominent natural and human-induced disaster in the city. Therefore, this study’s findings provided the historical and scientific data for the effective planning, management, and sustainable development of the city.

Objectives Paediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.Design A multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.Setting 91 hospitals and cancer centres in 39 countries providing cancer treatment to paediatric patients between March and December 2020.Participants Patients were included if they were under the age of 18 years, and newly diagnosed with or undergoing active cancer treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms’ tumour, sarcoma, retinoblastoma, gliomas, medulloblastomas or neuroblastomas, in keeping with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.Main outcome measure All-cause mortality at 30 days and 90 days.Results 1660 patients were recruited. 219 children had changes to their treatment due to the pandemic. Patients in LMICs were primarily affected (n=182/219, 83.1%). The current era is notably characterized by the major advances in communication technologies. The increased connectivity has been transformative in terrestrial, space, and undersea applications. Nonetheless, the water medium imposes unique constraints on the signals that can be pursued for establishing wireless links. While numerous studies have been dedicated to tackling the challenges for underwater communication, little attention has been paid to effectively interfacing the underwater networks to remote entities. Particularly it has been conventionally assumed that a surface node will be deployed to act as a relay using acoustic links for underwater nodes and radio links for air-based communication. Yet, such an assumption could be, in fact, a hindrance in practice. The paper discusses alternative means by allowing communication across the air–water interface. Specifically, the optoacoustic effect, also referred to as photoacoustic effect, is being exploited as a means for achieving connectivity between underwater and airborne nodes. The paper provides background, discusses technical challenges, and summarizes progress. Open research problems are also highlighted.

One of the most important criteria for a city’s sustainability is climate adaptation. Simultaneously, traditional cities in West Asia have achieved harmony between architecture and the environment, depending on the experience and culture of the local community, indicating a fundamental stage of adaptation to the environment and climate. This research attempted to study and examine the traditional urban fabric, in order to diagnose its significance and ability to solve contemporary problems, such as the lack of comfortable and suitable urban housing environments in hot–dry climate areas, which cover most of West Asia. We used two research methods to create an integrated vision to investigate the indicators and their effect on urban form. Four case studies in the urban fabric and housing communities of West Asia’s hot–dry research areas were chosen for the analytical study. Furthermore, inductive analysis was carried out to determine the most critical sustainability parameters in the particular urban fabric. The climate response parameters of the study cities were evaluated using Ecotect simulation tools, and the determinants of sustainability indicators were quantitatively evaluated to assess each indicator’s impact on the sustainability of the urban fabric. Our findings have implications for assessing the relevance of climate adaptation in the sustainability of cities and their effectiveness in combating the impacts of climate change.

Rapid urban expansion and the alteration of global land use/land cover (LULC) patterns have contributed substantially to the modification of urban climate, due to variations in Land Surface Temperature (LST). In this study, the LULC change dynamics of Kano metropolis, Nigeria, were analysed over the last three decades, i.e., 1990–2020, using multispectral satellite data to understand the impact of urbanization on LST in the study area. The Maximum Likelihood classification method and the Mono-window algorithm were utilised in classifying land uses and retrieving LST data. Spectral indices comprising the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) were also computed. A linear regression analysis was employed in order to examine the correlation between land surface temperature and the various spectral indices. The results indicate significant LULC changes and urban expansion of 152.55 sq. km from 1991 to 2020. During the study period, the city’s barren land and water bodies declined by approximately 172.58 sq. km and 26.55 sq. km, respectively, while vegetation increased slightly by 46.58 sq. km. Further analysis showed a negative correlation between NDVI and LST with a Pearson determination coefficient (R2) of 0.6145, 0.5644, 0.5402, and 0.5184 in 1991, 2000, 2010, and 2020 respectively. NDBI correlated positively with LST, having an R2 of 0.4132 in 1991, 0.3965 in 2000, 0.3907 in 2010, and 0.3300 in 2020. The findings of this study provide critical climatic data useful to policy- and decision-makers in optimizing land use and mitigating the impact of urban heat through sustainable urban development.

Rapid urbanization in cities and urban centers has recently contributed to notable land use/land cover (LULC) changes, affecting both the climate and environment. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze changes in LULC and its spatiotemporal influence on the surface urban heat islands (UHI) in Abuja metropolis, Nigeria. To achieve this, we employed Multi-temporal Landsat data to monitor the study area’s LULC pattern and land surface temperature (LST) over the last 29 years. The study then analyzed the relationship between LULC, LST, and other vital spectral indices comprising NDVI and NDBI using correlation analysis. The results revealed a significant urban expansion with the transformation of 358.3 sq. km of natural surface into built-up areas. It further showed a considerable increase in the mean LST of Abuja metropolis from 30.65 °C in 1990 to 32.69 °C in 2019, with a notable increase of 2.53 °C between 2009 and 2019. The results also indicated an inverse relationship between LST and NDVI and a positive connection between LST and NDBI. This implies that urban expansion and vegetation decrease influences the development of surface UHI through increased LST. Therefore, the study’s findings will significantly help urban-planners and decision-makers implement sustainable land-use strategies and management for the city.

The overall objective of this study was to establish the effects of internal controls on the financial performance of Asiacell as a telecommunication company in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This was achieved by looking at the effect of control environment, risk assessment, information and communication, control activities and monitoring on the return on asset of the selected company. The study used both primary and secondary techniques to collect the data. In the model, the dependent variable is financial performance while the independent variables are the components of internal controls. After analyzing the audited financial statements and filling the questioners by the employees of the selected company, the findings of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between internal controls and financial performance. The dependent and the independent variables in the study indicated a relationship with control environment, risk assessment. Information and communication and control activities illustrated a positive relationship with the financial performance while monitoring showed a negative relationship with financial performance. The study also found that, Asiacell had invested on effective internal control systems, thus, it had a better financial performance as compared to the related firms that had a weak internal control system. The study further recommends that the governing body, possibly supported by the audit committee, should ensure that the internal control system is periodically monitored and evaluated by the respective managers.

To increase underwater acoustic signal detectability and conserve energy, nodes leverage directional transmissions. In addition, nodes operate in a three-dimensional (3D) environment that is categorized as inhomogeneous where a propagating signal changes its direction based on the observed sound speed profile (SSP). Coupling 3D directional transmission with frequent node drifts and the varying underwater SSP complicates the process of selecting suitable transmission angles to maintain underwater communication links. Fundamentally, utilizing directional transmission while nodes are drifting causes breaks in established communication links and thus nodes need to find new angles to reestablish these links. Moreover, selecting arbitrary transmission angles may lead to overlapping beams or result in leaving an underwater region uncovered. To tackle the abovementioned challenges, this paper proposes an autonomous beam selection approach that optimizes underwater communication by selecting non-overlapping beams while mitigating the possibility of missing a region, i.e., maximize coverage. Such optimization is achieved by utilizing a structured angle selection mechanism that accounts for the capability of the used transducer. Moreover, we introduce an algorithm suited for resource constrained nodes to classify rays into different types. Then we divide the underwater medium into regions where each region is identified by the limits of the coverage area of each ray type. Finally, we utilize the limits of these regions to aid nodes in selecting the best ray to reestablish communication with drifted nodes. We validate our contribution through simulation where actual SSPs are leveraged to validate the beam classification process.

Background: NIMA-related kinase 7 (NEK7) is a serine/threonine kinase that is required for cell cycle progression, particularly mitotic spindle formation and cytokinesis, and has been linked to various cancers. Furthermore, NEK7 modulates the NLRP3 inflammasome, which activates Caspase-1 and causes cell pyroptosis. A growing body of studies indicates that ginger has the ability to prevent and treat a variety of health issues. Methods: In this study, 383 distinct bioactive compounds were extracted from the LOTUS database from Zingiber officinale and were screened against NEK7 protein using the PyRx 0.8 software. The top six hits' physicochemical characteristics, molecular descriptors, and natural product-likeness ratings were assessed using the LOTUS database. Results: The compounds LTS0101379, LTS0022317, TS0094590, LTS0231343, LTS0085481, and LTS0110340 showed high affinity for NEK7, forming interactions with critical amino acid residues. Notably, these compounds had multiple interactions with amino acid residues similar to those of the control compound Dabrafenib. Furthermore, the molecular properties and descriptors of these compounds indicated favorable drug-like properties. Conclusion: These findings highlight the potential of these compounds as NEK7 inhibitors for cancer management, though additional experimental validation is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder characterized by depigmented skin regions caused by a loss of melanocytes. Although vitiligo's origin is unknown, environmental, immunological, and genetic factors are involved. In treating vitiligo, microneedling is an effective adjuvant that improves the administration and effectiveness of medications such as trichloroacetic acid, 5-fluorouracil, and latanoprost. There is currently little data regarding the combination that is both safe and effective. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of microneedling delivery of latanoprost versus microneedling delivery of 5-fluorouracil and microneedling delivery of Trichloroacetic acid 35% in induction of skin re-pigmentation in stable vitiligo. Methods: This non-randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 54 patients, 18-60 years old, with stable vitiligo. They were divided into; Group (A) patients treated with dermapen followed by 5% 5-fluorouracil, Group (B) patients treated with dermapen followed by latanoprost, and Group (C) patients treated with dermapen followed by Trichloroacetic acid 35%. Results: There was an increase in excellent response among the group compared to B&C but without statistical significance. Also, there was no statistically significant difference between the studied groups in time of starting response. There was an increase in the frequency of very satisfaction among group A compared to B&C but without statistical significance. Conclusion: The combination of microneedling with either 5-Flourouracil or latanoprost or Trichloroacetic acid 35% is safe and effective in treatment of localized stable vitiligo. Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2) plays a role in breaking down the components of the extracellular matrix, which allows cancer cells to advance and invade. Therefore, the inhibition of MMP2 shows potential as a promising strategy for treating cancer. Methods: This study employed computational screening to identify MMP2 inhibitors from a collection of 2,405 natural compounds. GLXC-26716, the co-crystal ligand of MMP2, served as the positive control. Virtual screening was performed using PyRx 8.0 software to find molecules that might inhibit the active site of MMP2. Results: The virtual screening process has identified five potential candidates: ZINC000000001412, ZINC000001612328, ZINC000001614079, ZINC000000119988, and ZINC0000000047553. These candidates were selected based on their strong binding affinities and interactions with MMP2. These compounds, which adhere to Lipinski's Rule of Five and have significant physicochemical properties, show promise as MMP2 inhibitors. Conclusion: The finding of this study indicates a preliminary investigation into an innovative approach for managing cancer that inhibits the invasion and dissemination of cancer cells.
