1. A Principal Components Analysis-Based Method for the Detection of Cannabis Plants Using Representation Data by Remote Sensing

Abstract

Integrating the representation of the territory, through airborne remote sensing activities with hyperspectral and visible sensors, and managing complex data through dimensionality reduction for the identification of cannabis plantations, in Albania, is the focus of the research proposed by the multidisciplinary group of the Benecon University Consortium. In this study, principal components analysis (PCA) was used to remove redundant spectral information from multiband datasets. This makes it easier to identify the most prevalent spectral characteristics in most bands and those that are specific to only a few bands. The survey and airborne monitoring by hyperspectral sensors is carried out with an Itres CASI 1500 sensor owned by Benecon, characterized by a spectral range of 380–1050 nm and 288 configurable channels. The spectral configuration adopted for the research was developed specifically to maximize the spectral separability of cannabis. The ground resolution of the georeferenced cartographic data varies according to the flight planning, inserted in the aerial platform of an Italian Guardia di Finanza’s aircraft, in relation to the orography of the sites under investigation. The geodatabase, wherein the processing of hyperspectral and visible images converge, contains ancillary data such as digital aeronautical maps, digital terrain models, color orthophoto, topographic data and in any case a significant amount of data so that they can be processed synergistically. The goal is to create maps and predictive scenarios, through the application of the spectral angle mapper algorithm, of the cannabis plantations scattered throughout the area. The protocol consists of comparing the spectral data acquired with the CASI1500 airborne sensor and the spectral signature of the cannabis leaves that have been acquired in the laboratory with ASD Fieldspec PRO FR spectrometers. These scientific studies have demonstrated how it is possible to achieve ex ante control of the evolution of the phenomenon itself for monitoring the cultivation of cannabis plantations.

Abstract

The urbanization processes that have developed in recent years have caused profound impacts on urban spaces’ surfaces, due to careless maintenance actions and impacts of climate change. The alterations of the ancient construction solutions have limited the permeability of the historic paving stones, causing the urban heat island. The waterproof, asphalted and cemented surfaces absorb heat with a consequent decrease in evapo-breathable phenomena and modification of the natural water cycle. In fact, the infiltration capacity of surface waters decreases, the volumes and the aggressiveness of the run-off water increase. In addition, it increases the transformation of pollutants causing the phenomenon of urban smog. The use of ancient construction solutions provided dry installation systems in a logic of respect for the environment that anticipated the times. The historical reading and the awareness of the efficiency of the solution are the premise in the choice of maintenance and restoration of urban surfaces to ensure the increase of permeability. Dry solutions and green technologies, combined with the choice of suitable materials, minimizes the impact on the drainage network, in line with the concept of low impact development, returning meteoric water to the atmosphere through evaporation and improving the microclimate. The rationalization of proposed interventions can be measured by parametric assessment of environmental health.

Abstract

Cultural landscape in the inner areas has peculiarities that distinguish it from medium-large cities, for social, cultural, environmental, economic aspects. It is affected by extreme global (climate crisis, scarcity of resources, migration, weakening of social capital, etc.) and local risks (depopulation, uncontrolled exploitation of the territory, erosion of cultural capital and identity of places, degradation of the landscape, etc.). In recent years, new socio-economic and cultural dynamics concern inner areas. Despite of an increased exodus towards the cities, in fact, there is a spontaneous cultural process, carried out above all by "new inhabitants" and at the same time a growing attention by the European and national institutions towards these territories. The traditional tools for the knowledge, design and management of the territory are sectoral and lack an integrated and dynamic vision for dealing with the different challenges and changes of the inner areas. The approach of "resilience thinking" can represent an effective tool and a new frontier of knowledge. The research proposes a Resilience Laboratory aimed at a complex and dynamic knowledge, at the assessment of the settlement system's ability to respond to the global and local threats, at the design of support tools in the adaptive management, at the involvement and training of citizens and stakeholders in the care and control of the territory.

Abstract

International audience; Cultural heritage belonging to religious institutions represents a significant part of the whole artistic estate of our country. Today, one of the main problem affecting the church properties is in the abandoning of those places - due both to the loosing of their old use and their closing to the public. The perspective for this kind of heritage is sometimes to get a new function, or to suffer degradation and demolition. Religious architectures are still today an exceptional part of the landscape. They survived through many centuries, even if they lost their original dedicated value. The religious heritage was part of a cultural and perceptive net that is still today an immaterial inheritance, as we can see it in the landscape nowadays. This kind of approach, based on a multidisciplinary contribution, allows the understanding of traces continuity in landscapes. And even traces that today are lost, they are still part of a cultural set. Thankfully to devotional paths, we are able to recreate the ancient images of places and their territorial value. A good governance model has to be done carefully with the support of multidisciplinary analysis. Especially in case of religious heritage it's important to enhance the immaterial aspect, sometimes even more than the material one.
