1. Estimating Map Completeness in Robot Exploration

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method that, given a partial grid map of an indoor environment built by an autonomous mobile robot, estimates the amount of the explored area represented in the map, as well as whether the uncovered part is still worth being explored or not. Our method is based on a deep convolutional neural network trained on data from partially explored environments with annotations derived from the knowledge of the entire map (which is not available when the network is used for inference). We show how such a network can be used to define a stopping criterion to terminate the exploration process when it is no longer adding relevant details about the environment to the map, saving, on average, 40% of the total exploration time with respect to covering all the area of the environment., Comment: Under review at IEEE RAL

Abstract

Multi-Agent Pickup and Delivery (MAPD) is the problem of computing collision-free paths for a group of agents such that they can safely reach delivery locations from pickup ones. These locations are provided at runtime, making MAPD a combination between classical Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) and online task assignment. Current algorithms for MAPD do not consider many of the practical issues encountered in real applications: real agents often do not follow the planned paths perfectly, and may be subject to delays and failures. In this paper, we study the problem of MAPD with delays, and we present two solution approaches that provide robustness guarantees by planning paths that limit the effects of imperfect execution. In particular, we introduce two algorithms, k-TP and p-TP, both based on a decentralized algorithm typically used to solve MAPD, Token Passing (TP), which offer deterministic and probabilistic guarantees, respectively. Experimentally, we compare our algorithms against a version of TP enriched with online replanning. k-TP and p-TP provide robust solutions, significantly reducing the number of replans caused by delays, with little or no increase in solution cost and running time.

Abstract

While for a long-time emotional reaction and moral distress, have been primarily investigated for the possible outcomes of the nursing decision-making process rather than in terms of their role as antecedents of the final decision taken. The primary study's aim is to explore how inpatient nurses' decision-making takes place in different care settings, with a special focus on the role played by emotions during decision-making. The secondary aim is to explore the subjective experience of hospital nurses in relation to successful and unsuccessful decision-making situations.Multicentre qualitative study, consisting of three phases with different designs: participatory study, grounded theory study, and phenomenological study. Participants will be nurses and may be doctors with various levels of professional experience working in hospital, outpatient, or ward settings. Participants will be recruited through different sampling (purposive and convenience). Data will be collected through focus groups and in-depth interviews with nurses working in different hospital care settings. The researchers expect to find themes that will contribute to a better understanding of the role of emotions in decision-making. The results of this study have the potential of providing important implications to support nurses in the recognition and management of their emotions during the decision-making process.

10. Robust Structure Identification and Room Segmentation of Cluttered Indoor Environments from Occupancy Grid Maps

Abstract

Identifying the environment's structure, i.e., to detect core components as rooms and walls, can facilitate several tasks fundamental for the successful operation of indoor autonomous mobile robots, including semantic environment understanding. These robots often rely on 2D occupancy maps for core tasks such as localisation and motion and task planning. However, reliable identification of structure and room segmentation from 2D occupancy maps is still an open problem due to clutter (e.g., furniture and movable object), occlusions, and partial coverage. We propose a method for the RObust StructurE identification and ROom SEgmentation (ROSE^2 ) of 2D occupancy maps, which may be cluttered and incomplete. ROSE^2 identifies the main directions of walls and is resilient to clutter and partial observations, allowing to extract a clean, abstract geometrical floor-plan-like description of the environment, which is used to segment, i.e., to identify rooms in, the original occupancy grid map. ROSE^2 is tested in several real-world publicly-available cluttered maps obtained in different conditions. The results show how it can robustly identify the environment structure in 2D occupancy maps suffering from clutter and partial observations, while significantly improving room segmentation accuracy. 11. Predicting Performance of SLAM Algorithms

Abstract

Among the abilities that autonomous mobile robots should exhibit, map building and localization are definitely recognized as fundamental. Consequently, countless algorithms for solving the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) problem have been proposed. Currently, their evaluation is performed ex-post, according to outcomes obtained when running the algorithms on data collected by robots in real or simulated environments. In this paper, we present a novel method that allows the ex-ante prediction of the performance of a SLAM algorithm in an unseen environment, before it is actually run. Our method collects the performance of a SLAM algorithm in a number of simulated environments, builds a model that represents the relationship between the observed performance and some geometrical features of the environments, and exploits such model to predict the performance of the algorithm in an unseen environment starting from its features., Comment: Working preprint draft. Abstract

Abstract Background Acute pharyngitis is a frequent reason for primary care or emergency unit visits in children. Most available data on pharyngitis management come from primary care studies that demonstrate an underuse of microbiological tests, a tendency to over-prescribe antibiotics and a risk of antimicrobial resistance increase. However, a comprehensive understanding of acute pharyngitis management in emergency units is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of rapid antigen test use to diagnose acute pharyngitis, as well as other diagnostic approaches, the therapeutic attitude, and follow-up of children with this condition in the emergency units. Methods A multicentric national study was conducted in Italian emergency departments between April and June 2022. Results A total of 107 out of 131 invited units (response rate 82%), participated in the survey. The results showed that half of the units use a scoring system to diagnose pharyngitis, with the McIsaac score being the most commonly used. Most emergency units (56%) were not provided with a rapid antigen diagnostic test by their hospital, but the test was more frequently available in units visiting more than 10,000 children yearly (57% vs 33%, respectively, p = 0.02). Almost half (47%) of the units prescribe antibiotics in children with pharyngitis despite the lack of microbiologically confirmed cases of Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus. Finally, about 25% of units prescribe amoxicillin-clavulanic acid to treat Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus pharyngitis. Conclusions The study sheds light on the approach to pharyngitis in emergency units, providing valuable information to improve the appropriate management of acute pharyngitis in this setting. The routinary provision of rapid antigen tests in the hospitals could enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to pharyngitis.

The skin, the marvelous and highly complex covering of our organism, is omnipresent in the work of Laura Pugno. In this essay, treasuring above all the hypotheses formulated in one classic of psychoanalysis such as The Skin-Ego by Didier Anzieu and a volume by the anthropologist David Le Breton, we follow the minimal, humble deeds of the very young protagonist of When you will come, the second novel by the Roman writer, as well as a splendid allegorical-fantastic representation of the urgent need to mark defined limits in our liquid time (the adjective belongs, as is more than known, to Zygmunt Bauman). In an era of collapse of the symbolic, the epidermis – the organ that precisely draws the outline of our bodies – would seem to be the last limit left to us, the one from which to start again.

Abstract

We consider exploration tasks in which an autonomous mobile robot incrementally builds maps of initially unknown indoor environments. In such tasks, the robot makes a sequence of decisions on where to move next that, usually, are based on knowledge about the observed parts of the environment. In this paper, we present an approach that exploits a prediction of the geometric structure of the unknown parts of an environment to improve exploration performance. In particular, we leverage an existing method that reconstructs the layout of an environment starting from a partial grid map and that predicts the shape of partially observed rooms on the basis of geometric features representing the regularities of the indoor environment. Then, we originally employ the predicted layout to estimate the amount of new area the robot would observe from candidate locations in order to inform the selection of the next best location and to early stop the exploration when no further relevant area is expected to be discovered. Experimental activities show that our approach is able to effectively predict the layout of partially observed rooms and to use such knowledge to speed up the exploration.

Abstract

Multirobot systems for covering environments are increasingly used in applications like cleaning, industrial inspection, patrolling, and precision agriculture. The problem of covering a given environment using multiple robots can be naturally formulated and studied as a multi-Traveling Salesperson Problem (mTSP). In a mTSP, the environment is represented as a graph and the goal is to find tours (starting and ending at the same depot) for the robots in order to visit all the vertices with minimum global cost, namely the length of the longest tour. The mTSP is an NP-hard problem for which several approximation algorithms have been proposed. These algorithms usually assume generic environments, but tighter approximation bounds can be reached focusing on specific environments. In this paper, we address the case of environments composed of sub-parts, called modules, that can be reached from each other only through some linking structures. Examples are multi-floor buildings, in which the modules are the floors and the linking structures are the staircases or the elevators, and floors of large hotels or hospitals, in which the modules are the rooms and the linking structures are the corridors. We focus on linear modular environments, with the modules organized sequentially, presenting an efficient (with polynomial worst-case time complexity) algorithm that finds a solution for the mTSP whose cost is within a bounded distance from the cost of the optimal solution. The main idea of our algorithm is to allocate disjoint "blocks" of adjacent modules to the robots, in such a way that each module is covered by only one robot. We experimentally compare our algorithm against some state-of-the-art algorithms for solving mTSPs in generic environments and show that it is able to provide solutions with lower makespan and spending a computing time several orders of magnitude shorter., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Summary: Background: Identifying phenotypes in sepsis patients may enable precision medicine approaches. However, the generalisability of these phenotypes to specific patient populations is unclear. Given that paediatric cancer patients with sepsis have different host response and pathogen profiles and higher mortality rates when compared to non-cancer patients, we determined whether unique, reproducible, and clinically-relevant sepsis phenotypes exist in this specific patient population. Methods: We studied patients with underlying malignancies admitted with sepsis to one of 25 paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) participating in two large, multi-centre, observational cohorts from the European SCOTER study (n = 383 patients; study period between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2020) and the U.S. Novel Data-Driven Sepsis Phenotypes in Children study (n = 1898 patients; study period between January 1, 2012 and January 1, 2018). We independently used latent class analysis (LCA) in both cohorts to identify phenotypes using demographic, clinical, and laboratory data from the first 24 h of PICU admission. We then tested the association of the phenotypes with clinical outcomes in both cohorts. Findings: LCA identified two distinct phenotypes that were comparable across both cohorts. Phenotype 1 was characterised by lower serum bicarbonate and albumin, markedly increased lactate and hepatic, renal, and coagulation abnormalities when compared to phenotype 2. Abstract. Objectives. To test hypothesized associations between the ABO blood group (ABO-bg) system and the pathological features of prostate cancer (PCa). Material and methods. Between January 2013 and September 2019, 1173 patients underwent radical prostatectomy. Associations between ABO-bg levels and pathological features were evaluated using statistical methods. Results. Overall, 1149 consecutive patients were evaluated using the ABO-bg system, which was represented by O-bg (42.8%) and A-bg (41.3%), followed by B-bg (11.1%) and AB-bg (4.8%). Only positive surgical margins (PSMs) was correlated with ABO-bg (Pearson correlation coefficient, r = 0.071; p = 0.017), and the risk was increased in group-O (odds ratio [OR], 1.497; 95% confidence interval, 1.149–1.950; p = 0.003) versus non–O-bg. In clinical and pathological models, O-bg was at increased risk of PSM after the adjustment for prostate-specific antigen, percentage of biopsy-positive cores, and high surgical volume (adjusted OR, 1.546; 95% confidence interval, 1.180–2.026; p = 0.002); however, the adjusted OR did not change after the adjustment for tumor load and stage as well as high surgical volume. Conclusions. In clinical PCa, the risk of PSM was higher in O-bg versus non–O-bg patients after the adjustment for standard predictors. Confirmatory studies are needed to confirm the association between ABO-bg and unfavorable PCa features.

Abstract

Abstract Objective To discuss the results of the KETASER01 trial and the reasons for its failure, particularly in view of future studies. Methods KETASER01 is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, open‐label, sequentially designed, non‐profit Italian study that aimed to assess the efficacy of ketamine compared with conventional anesthetics in the treatment of refractory convulsive status epilepticus (RCSE) in children. Results During the 5‐year recruitment phase, a total of 76 RCSEs treated with third‐line therapy were observed in five of the 10 participating Centers; only 10 individuals (five for each study arm; five females, mean age 6.5 ± 6.3 years) were enrolled in the KETASER01 study. Two of the five patients (40%) in the experimental arm were successfully treated with ketamine and two of the five (40%) children in the control arm, where successfully treated with thiopental. In the remaining six (60%) enrolled patients, RCSE was not controlled by the randomized anesthetic(s). Significance The KETASER01 study was prematurely halted due to low eligibility of patients and no successful recruitment. No conclusions can be drawn regarding the objectives of the study. Here, we discuss the KETASER01 results and critically analyze the reasons for its failure in view of future trials.

Abstract

The problem of gas detection is relevant to many real-world applications, such as leak detection in industrial settings and landfill monitoring. Using mobile robots for gas detection has several advantages and can reduce danger for humans. In our work, we address the problem of planning a path for a mobile robotic platform equipped with a remote gas sensor, which minimizes the time to detect all gas sources in a given environment. We cast this problem as a coverage planning problem by defining a basic sensing operation -- a scan with the remote gas sensor -- as the field of "view" of the sensor. Given the computing effort required by previously proposed offline approaches, in this paper we suggest a online coverage algorithm, called Next-Best-Smell, adapted from the Next-Best-View class of exploration algorithms. Our algorithm evaluates candidate locations with a global utility function, which combines utility values for travel distance, information gain, and sensing time, using Multi-Criteria Decision Making. In our experiments, conducted both in simulation and with a real robot, we found the performance of the Next-Best-Smell approach to be comparable with that of the state-of-the-art offline algorithm, at much lower computational cost.

Abstract

Summary: Background: The benefits of facilitating breastmilk feeding and close contact between mother and neonate (family-centred care; FCC) in the perinatal period are well-established. The aim of this study was to determine how the delivery of FCC practices were impacted for neonates born to mothers with perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Neonates born to mothers with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy were identified from the ‘EsPnIC Covid paEdiatric NeonaTal REgistry’ (EPICENTRE) multinational cohort between 10 March 2020 and 20 October 2021. The EPICENTRE cohort collected prospective data on FCC practices. Rooming-in and breastmilk feeding practice were the main outcomes, and factors influencing each were determined. Other outcomes included mother-baby physical contact prior to separation and the pattern of FCC components relative to time and local site guidelines. Findings: 692 mother-baby dyads (13 sites, 10 countries) were analysed. 27 (5%) neonates were positive for SARS-CoV-2 (14 (52%) asymptomatic). Most sites had policies that encouraged FCC during perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection for most of the reporting period. 311 (46%) neonates roomed-in with their mother during the admission. Rooming-in increased over time from 23% in March–June 2020 to 74% in January–March 2021 (boreal season). 330 (93%) of the 369 separated neonates had no FCC physical contact with their mother prior, and 319 (86%) were asymptomatic. Maternal breastmilk was used for feeding in 354 (53%) neonates, increasing from 23% to 70% between March–June 2020 and January–March 2021. FCC was most impacted when mothers had symptomatic COVID-19 at birth. Interpretation: This is the largest report of global FCC practice during the COVID-19 pandemic to date. The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted FCC despite low perinatal transmission rates. Fortunately, clinicians appear to have adapted to allow more FCC delivery as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed.
