1. Network analysis reveals news press landscape and asymmetric user polarization

Abstract

Unlike traditional media, online news platforms allow users to consume content that suits their tastes and to facilitate interactions with other people. However, as more personalized consumption of information and interaction with like-minded users increase, ideological bias can inadvertently increase and contribute to the formation of echo chambers, reinforcing the polarization of opinions. Although the structural characteristics of polarization among different ideological groups in online spaces have been extensively studied, research into how these groups emotionally interact with each other has not been as thoroughly explored. From this perspective, we investigate both structural and affective polarization between news media user groups on Naver News, South Korea's largest online news portal, during the period of 2022 Korean presidential election. By utilizing the dataset comprising 333,014 articles and over 36 million user comments, we uncover two distinct groups of users characterized by opposing political leanings and reveal significant bias and polarization among them. Additionally, we reveal the existence of echo chambers within co-commenting networks and investigate the asymmetric affective interaction patterns between the two polarized groups. Classification task of news media articles based on the distinct comment response patterns support the notion that different political groups may employ distinct communication strategies. Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find the true comfort of the wearer by conceptualizing, formulating, and proving the relation between physiological and emotional parameters with clothing fit and fabric. A mixed-method research design was used, and the findings showed that physiological indicators such as heart rate are closely linked with user comfort. However, a significant change in emotional response indicated a definite relationship between different fabric and fit types. The research was conducted to discover the relation between true comfort parameters and clothing, which is unique to the field. The findings help us understand how fabric types and clothing fit types can affect physiological and emotional responses, providing the consumer with satisfactory clothing with the suitable properties needed.

Abstract

We introduce Nymeria - a large-scale, diverse, richly annotated human motion dataset collected in the wild with multiple multimodal egocentric devices. The dataset comes with a) full-body 3D motion ground truth; b) egocentric multimodal recordings from Project Aria devices with RGB, grayscale, eye-tracking cameras, IMUs, magnetometer, barometer, and microphones; and c) an additional "observer" device providing a third-person viewpoint. We compute world-aligned 6DoF transformations for all sensors, across devices and capture sessions. The dataset also provides 3D scene point clouds and calibrated gaze estimation. We derive a protocol to annotate hierarchical language descriptions of in-context human motion, from fine-grain pose narrations, to atomic actions and activity summarization. To the best of our knowledge, the Nymeria dataset is the world largest in-the-wild collection of human motion with natural and diverse activities; first of its kind to provide synchronized and localized multi-device multimodal egocentric data; and the world largest dataset with motion-language descriptions. It contains 1200 recordings of 300 hours of daily activities from 264 participants across 50 locations, travelling a total of 399Km. The motion-language descriptions provide 310.5K sentences in 8.64M words from a vocabulary size of 6545. To demonstrate the potential of the dataset we define key research tasks for egocentric body tracking, motion synthesis, and action recognition and evaluate several state-of-the-art baseline algorithms. Data and code will be open-sourced.

Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: While DNA methylation and gastric microbiome are each associated with gastric cancer (GC), their combined role in predicting GC remains unclear. This study investigated the potential of a combined DNA methylation and gastric microbiome signature to predict Helicobacter pylori-negative GC. METHODS: In this case-control study, we conducted quantitative methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction to measure the methylation levels of DKK3, SFRP1, EMX1, NKX6-1, MIR124-3, and TWIST1 in the gastric mucosa from 75 H. pylori-negative patients, including chronic gastritis (CG), intestinal metaplasia (IM), and GC. 5. Facilitating Human-LLM Collaboration through Factuality Scores and Source Attributions

Abstract

While humans increasingly rely on large language models (LLMs), they are susceptible to generating inaccurate or false information, also known as "hallucinations". Technical advancements have been made in algorithms that detect hallucinated content by assessing the factuality of the model's responses and attributing sections of those responses to specific source documents. However, there is limited research on how to effectively communicate this information to users in ways that will help them appropriately calibrate their trust toward LLMs. To address this issue, we conducted a scenario-based study (N=104) to systematically compare the impact of various design strategies for communicating factuality and source attribution on participants' ratings of trust, preferences, and ease in validating response accuracy. Our findings reveal that participants preferred a design in which phrases within a response were color-coded based on the computed factuality scores. Additionally, participants increased their trust ratings when relevant sections of the source material were highlighted or responses were annotated with reference numbers corresponding to those sources, compared to when they received no annotation in the source material. 6. Boosted Neural Decoders: Achieving Extreme Reliability of LDPC Codes for 6G Networks

Abstract

Ensuring extremely high reliability is essential for channel coding in 6G networks. The next-generation of ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (xURLLC) scenario within 6G networks requires a frame error rate (FER) below 10-9. However, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the standard in 5G new radio (NR), encounter a challenge known as the error floor phenomenon, which hinders to achieve such low rates. To tackle this problem, we introduce an innovative solution: boosted neural min-sum (NMS) decoder. This decoder operates identically to conventional NMS decoders, but is trained by novel training methods including: i) boosting learning with uncorrected vectors, ii) block-wise training schedule to address the vanishing gradient issue, iii) dynamic weight sharing to minimize the number of trainable weights, iv) transfer learning to reduce the required sample count, and v) data augmentation to expedite the sampling process. Leveraging these training strategies, the boosted NMS decoder achieves the state-of-the art performance in reducing the error floor as well as superior waterfall performance. Remarkably, we fulfill the 6G xURLLC requirement for 5G LDPC codes without the severe error floor. As multiple and heterogenous unmanned vehicle systems continue to play an increasingly important role in addressing complex missions in the real world, the need for effective cooperation among unmanned vehicles becomes paramount. The concept of autonomous cooperation, wherein unmanned vehicles cooperate without human intervention or human control, offers promising avenues for enhancing the efficiency and adaptability of intelligence of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. Despite the growing interests in this domain, as far as the authors are concerned, there exists a notable lack of comprehensive literature on defining explicit concept and classifying levels of autonomous cooperation of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. In this aspect, this article aims to define the explicit concept of autonomous cooperation of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. Furthermore, we provide a novel criterion to assess the technical maturity of the developed unmanned vehicle systems by classifying the autonomous cooperative levels of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems.

8. Fixed Node Determination and Analysis in Directed Acyclic Graphs of Structured Networks

Abstract

This paper explores the conditions for determining fixed nodes in structured networks, specifically focusing on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). We introduce several necessary and sufficient conditions for determining fixed nodes in $p$-layered DAGs. This is accomplished by defining the problem of maximum disjoint stems, based on the observation that all DAGs can be represented as hierarchical structures with a unique label for each layer. For structured networks, we discuss the importance of fixed nodes by considering their controllability against the variations of network parameters. Moreover, we present an efficient algorithm that simultaneously performs labeling and fixed node search for $p$-layered DAGs with an analysis of its time complexity. The results presented in this paper have implications for the analysis of controllability at the individual node level in structured networks.

9. Composition Rules for Strong Structural Controllability and Minimum Input Problem in Diffusively-Coupled Networks

Abstract

This paper presents new results and reinterpretation of existing conditions for strong structural controllability in a structured network determined by the zero/non-zero patterns of edges. For diffusively-coupled networks with self-loops, we first establish a necessary and sufficient condition for strong structural controllability, based on the concepts of dedicated and sharing nodes. Subsequently, we define several conditions for strong structural controllability across various graph types by decomposing them into disjoint path graphs. We further extend our findings by introducing a composition rule, facilitating the analysis of strong structural controllability in larger networks. This rule allows us to determine the strong structural controllability of connected graphs called pactus graphs (a generalization of the well-known cactus graph) by consideration of the strong structural controllability of its disjoint component graphs. In this process, we introduce the notion of a component input node, which is a state node that functions identically to an external input node. 10. CrossMPT: Cross-attention Message-Passing Transformer for Error Correcting Codes

Abstract

Error correcting codes~(ECCs) are indispensable for reliable transmission in communication systems. The recent advancements in deep learning have catalyzed the exploration of ECC decoders based on neural networks. Among these, transformer-based neural decoders have achieved state-of-the-art decoding performance. In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-attention Message-Passing Transformer~(CrossMPT). CrossMPT iteratively updates two types of input vectors (i.e., magnitude and syndrome vectors) using two masked cross-attention blocks. The mask matrices in these cross-attention blocks are determined by the code's parity-check matrix that delineates the relationship between magnitude and syndrome vectors. Our experimental results show that CrossMPT significantly outperforms existing neural network-based decoders, particularly in decoding low-density parity-check codes. Notably, CrossMPT also achieves a significant reduction in computational complexity, achieving over a 50\% decrease in its attention layers compared to the original transformer-based decoder, while retaining the computational complexity of the remaining layers., Comment: 13 pages

11. ESG Classification by Implicit Rule Learning via GPT-4

Abstract

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors are widely adopted as higher investment return indicators. Accordingly, ongoing efforts are being made to automate ESG evaluation with language models to extract signals from massive web text easily. However, recent approaches suffer from a lack of training data, as rating agencies keep their evaluation metrics confidential. This paper investigates whether state-of-the-art language models like GPT-4 can be guided to align with unknown ESG evaluation criteria through strategies such as prompting, chain-of-thought reasoning, and dynamic in-context learning. We demonstrate the efficacy of these approaches by ranking 2nd in the Shared-Task ML-ESG-3 Impact Type track for Korean without updating the model on the provided training data. We also explore how adjusting prompts impacts the ability of language models to address financial tasks leveraging smaller models with openly available weights. We observe longer general pre-training to correlate with enhanced performance in financial downstream tasks. Abstract

Perturbation-based explanation methods such as LIME and SHAP are commonly applied to text classification. This work focuses on their extension to generative language models. To address the challenges of text as output and long text inputs, we propose a general framework called MExGen that can be instantiated with different attribution algorithms. To handle text output, we introduce the notion of scalarizers for mapping text to real numbers and investigate multiple possibilities. To handle long inputs, we take a multi-level approach, proceeding from coarser levels of granularity to finer ones, and focus on algorithms with linear scaling in model queries. We conduct a systematic evaluation, both automated and human, of perturbation-based attribution methods for summarization and context-grounded question answering. The results show that our framework can provide more locally faithful explanations of generated outputs.

13. WoLF: Wide-scope Large Language Model Framework for CXR Understanding

Abstract

Significant methodological strides have been made toward Chest X-ray (CXR) understanding via modern vision-language models (VLMs), demonstrating impressive Visual Question Answering (VQA) and CXR report generation abilities. However, existing CXR understanding frameworks still possess several procedural caveats. (1) Previous methods solely use CXR reports, which are insufficient for comprehensive Visual Question Answering (VQA), especially when additional health-related data like medication history and prior diagnoses are needed. (2) Previous methods use raw CXR reports, which are often arbitrarily structured. While modern language models can understand various text formats, restructuring reports for clearer, organized anatomy-based information could enhance their usefulness. (3) Current evaluation methods for CXR-VQA primarily emphasize linguistic correctness, lacking the capability to offer nuanced assessments of the generated answers. In this work, to address the aforementioned caveats, we introduce WoLF, a Wide-scope Large Language Model Framework for CXR understanding. To resolve (1), we capture multi-faceted records of patients, which are utilized for accurate diagnoses in real-world clinical scenarios. Specifically, we adopt the Electronic Health Records (EHR) to generate instruction-following data suited for CXR understanding. Regarding (2), we enhance report generation performance by decoupling knowledge in CXR reports based on anatomical structure even within the attention step via masked attention. To address (3), we introduce an AI-evaluation protocol optimized for assessing the capabilities of LLM. 14. Synchronisation-Oriented Design Approach for Adaptive Control

Abstract

This study presents a synchronisation-oriented perspective towards adaptive control which views model-referenced adaptation as synchronisation between actual and virtual dynamic systems. In the context of adaptation, model reference adaptive control methods make the state response of the actual plant follow a reference model. In the context of synchronisation, consensus methods involving diffusive coupling induce a collective behaviour across multiple agents. We draw from the understanding about the two time-scale nature of synchronisation motivated by the study of blended dynamics. The synchronisation-oriented approach consists in the design of a coupling input to achieve desired closed-loop error dynamics followed by the input allocation process to shape the collective behaviour. We suggest that synchronisation can be a reasonable design principle allowing a more holistic and systematic approach to the design of adaptive control systems for improved transient characteristics. Most notably, the proposed approach enables not only constructive derivation but also substantial generalisation of the previously developed closed-loop reference model adaptive control method. Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Within the context of structured networks, this paper introduces the concept of the Fixed Strongly Structurally Controllable Subspace (FSSCS), enabling a comprehensive characterization of controllable subspaces. From a graph-theoretical viewpoint, the paper defines Fixed Strongly Structurally Controllable (FSSC) nodes based on the FSSCS concept and establishes the necessary and sufficient conditions for their identification. This paper proposes a method for determining the exact dimension of the Strongly Structurally Controllable Subspace (SSCS) in hierarchical directed acyclic graphs, employing a blend of graph-theoretical approaches and controllability matrix analyses. This approach not only facilitates the identification of FSSC nodes but also enhances our understanding of the robustness of node controllability against variations in network parameters within structured networks, marking a significant advancement in the field of strong structural controllability of individual nodes.

17. Operando Raman spectroscopy uncovers hydroxide and CO species enhance ethanol selectivity during pulsed CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract

Pulsed CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) has recently emerged as a facile way to in situ tune the product selectivity, in particular toward ethanol, without re-designing the catalytic system. However, in-depth mechanistic understanding requires comprehensive operando time-resolved studies to identify the kinetics and dynamics of the electrocatalytic interface. Here, we track the adsorbates and the catalyst state of pre-reduced Cu2O nanocubes ( ~ 30 nm) during pulsed CO2RR using sub-second time-resolved operando Raman spectroscopy. By screening a variety of product-steering pulse length conditions, we unravel the critical role of co-adsorbed OH and CO on the Cu surface next to the oxidative formation of Cu-Oad or CuOx/(OH)y species, impacting the kinetics of CO adsorption and boosting the ethanol selectivity. However, a too low OHad coverage following the formation of bulk-like Cu2O induces a significant increase in the C1 selectivity, while a too high OHad coverage poisons the surface for C-C coupling. Thus, we unveil the importance of co-adsorbed OH on the alcohol formation under CO2RR conditions and thereby, pave the way for improved catalyst design and operating conditions.

Abstract

The recent discovery of room-temperature ferromagnetism in 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials, such as Fe3GaTe2 (FGaT), has garnered significant interest in offering a robust platform for 2D spintronic applications. Various fundamental operations essential for the realization of 2D spintronics devices are experimentally confirmed using these materials at room temperature, such as current-induced magnetization switching or tunneling magnetoresistance. Nevertheless, the potential applications of magnetic skyrmions in FGaT systems at room temperature remain unexplored. In this work, the current-induced generation of magnetic skyrmions in FGaT flakes employing high-resolution magnetic transmission soft X-ray microscopy is introduced, supported by a feasible mechanism based on thermal effects. Furthermore, direct observation of the current-induced magnetic skyrmion motion at room temperature in FGaT flakes is presented with ultra-low threshold current density. This work highlights the potential of FGaT as a foundation for room-temperature-operating 2D skyrmion device applications.

Abstract

In phase-shifting profilometry (PSP), any motion during the acquisition of fringe patterns can introduce errors because it assumes both the object and measurement system are stationary. Therefore, we propose a method to pixel-wise reduce the errors when the measurement system is in motion due to a motorized linear stage. The proposed method introduces motion-induced error reduction algorithm, which leverages the motor's encoder and pinhole model of the camera and projector. 3D shape measurement is possible with only three fringe patterns by applying geometric constraints of the digital fringe projection system. We address the mismatch problem due to the motion-induced camera pixel disparities and reduce phase-shift errors. These processes are easy to implement and require low computational cost. Abstract

This paper considers an optimal energy management problem for a network of interconnected microgrids. A model predictive control (MPC) approach is used to avoid capacity constraint violation and to cope with uncertainties of forecasted power demands. By employing a dual ascent method and a proximal alternative direction multiplier method (ADMM), respectively, two distributed methods are designed to allow every agent using only local information to determine its own optimal control decisions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via numerical simulations.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

We propose automatic optimisation methods considering the geometry of matrix manifold for the normalised parameters of neural networks. Layerwise weight normalisation with respect to Frobenius norm is utilised to bound the Lipschitz constant and to enhance gradient reliability so that the trained networks are suitable for control applications. Our approach first initialises the network and normalises the data with respect to the $\ell^{2}$-$\ell^{2}$ gain of the initialised network. Then, the proposed algorithms take the update structure based on the exponential map on high-dimensional spheres. Given an update direction such as that of the negative Riemannian gradient, we propose two different ways to determine the stepsize for descent. The first algorithm utilises automatic differentiation of the objective function along the update curve defined on the combined manifold of spheres. The directional second-order derivative information can be utilised without requiring explicit construction of the Hessian. The second algorithm utilises the majorisation-minimisation framework via architecture-aware majorisation for neural networks.
