Background:Congenitalheartdiseaseisacommonbirthdefectratherthanapaediatricdisease.Parentsoftendiscoverthisdiseaseaftertheirchildren'sbirthandthenoftenlearnthatcardiacsurgeryistheonlysolution.Achild'sadmissiontoapaediatriccardiacintensivecareunit(PCICU)mayleadtohighlevelsofstress,anxi-etyanddepressioninparents.Objectives:Todescribethelivedexperiencesofmothersandfathersduringtheirchildren'sconfinementinaPCICU.Methods:Aphenomenologicalstudywasconducted.Thismethodcombinesdescriptivefeatures(Husserlian)andinterpretivephenomenology(Gadamerian).ThesubjectswereinterviewedwithopenquestionstoallowthemfullfreedomofexpressionandwereaskedtodescribetheirexperienceswhentheirchildrenwereadmittedtothePCICU.Eachinterviewwasaudio-recordedandlastedbetween20and60minutes.Theresearchersinvolvedintheanalysiseachindependentlyimmersedthemselvesinthedatabyreadingandre-readingthetranscriptsinordertogainasenseofthewholedataset.Theextrapolationofthethemesfol-lowed.Theindividualresearcherscomparedthevariousextrapolatedthemes.Results:Weenrolled16participants.Threemainthemesemerged:1)thefearofthepotentiallossoftheirchildren,(2)thefeelingofhavinglosttheirrolesasparentsand(3)thedesiretoreceivemoreinformationandbeanactivepartofthetreatmentprocess.Conclusion:Achild'sadmissiontoaPCICUrequireshealthcarestafftotakecareofthechild'sfamilymembersaswell.Knowingaboutmothers’andfathers’experiencesiscrucialinimplementingaholisticandmultidis-ciplinaryprocessofcare.
