1. Computational homogenization of higher-order electro-mechanical materials with built-in generalized periodicity conditions

Abstract

We present a formulation for high-order generalized periodicity conditions in the context of a high-order electromechanical theory including flexoelectricity, strain gradient elasticity and gradient dielectricity, with the goal of studying periodic architected metamaterials. Such theory results in fourth-order governing partial differential equations, and the periodicity conditions involve continuity across the periodic boundary of primal fields (displacement and electric potential) and their normal derivatives, continuity of the corresponding dual generalized forces (tractions, double tractions, surface charge density and double surface charge density). Rather than imposing these conditions numerically as explicit constraints, we develop an approximation space which fulfils generalized periodicity by construction. Our method naturally allows us to impose general macroscopic fields (strains/stresses and electric fields/electric displacements) along arbitrary directions, enabling the characterization of the material anisotropy. We apply the proposed method to study periodic architected metamaterials with apparent piezoelectricity. We first verify the method by directly comparing the results with a large periodic structure, then apply it to evaluate the anisotropic apparently piezoelectricity of a geometrically polarized 2D lattice, and finally demonstrate the application of the method in a 3D architected metamaterial.

Abstract

We first revisit the mathematical modeling of the flexoelectric effect in the context of continuum mechanics at infinitesimal deformations. We establish and clarify the relation between the different formulations, point out theoretical and numerical issues related to the resulting boundary value problems, and present the natural extension to finite deformations. We then present a simple B-spline based computational technique to numerically solve the associated boundary value problems, which can be extended to handle unfitted meshes, hence allowing for arbitrarily-shaped geometries. Several numerical examples illustrate the flexoelectric effect in simple benchmark setups, as well as in new flexoelectric devices and metamaterials engineered for sensing or actuation. Abstract

The partition of the ecological niche can enhance the coexistence of predators due to differences in how they exploit three main resources: food, space, and time, the latter being an axis that often remains unexplored. We studied niche segregation in a Mediterranean mesocarnivore community composed by Vulpes vulpes, Genetta genetta, Meles meles, and Herpestes ichneumon, addressing simultaneously different niche axes: the temporal, trophic, and spatial axes. We assessed temporal segregation between mesopredators and prey and between potential competitors, using camera trap data between 2018 and 2020 in a Mediterranean landscape in Southern Spain. We deployed camera traps in 35 stations in three sites with varying vegetation cover within Doñana National Park. We further examined the spatial overlap in activity centers and trophic preferences between potential competitors using diet information from studies performed in the study area. We found an overall temporal segregation between trophic generalist species, with species showing higher temporal overlap differing in their trophic preferences and/or showing limited spatial overlap. Furthermore, we observed an overall high overlap between the activity patterns of predators and their major prey in the area (the common genet vs. small mammals and the red fox vs. European rabbit). Our study suggests that coexistence of the different species that compose the mesocarnivore assemblage in Mediterranean landscapes can be facilitated by subtle differences along the three main niche axes, with temporal segregation being a most pronounced mechanism. Our findings reinforce the idea that the coexistence mechanisms underlying community structure are multidimensional.

Abstract

Introduction: "Cluster suicides," also known as "suicide clusters," refer to a phenomenon in which a series of suicides occur within a specific community, group, or geographic area within a relatively short period of time. These suicides often appear to be interconnected, either through imitation or contagion, and may involve individuals who have some form of social or emotional connection to each other. Objectives: - Understanding the definition and characteristics of cluster suicides. - Analyzing common risk factors and triggers in cluster suicide cases. - Evaluating prevention and support strategies for affected individuals and communities. Methods: We conduct an analysis of this concept based on a sample of suicides that occurred in a Spanish region over an 8-year period (2015-2022). Introduction: Crisis resolution teams (CRTs) are a crucial component of mental health care, providing timely support to individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. This abstract delves into the concept of crisis and seeks to identify the patients who stand to benefit from these specialized services. Objectives: Defining crisis within the context of CRTs can be complex. It encompasses not only immediate emergencies but also broader mental health distress. Research suggests that suitable candidates for CRT interventions are those facing acute mental health crises : This includes individuals experiencing suicidal ideation, severe agitation, or severe emotional distress. La "Escala de Evaluación de Resolución de Crisis" (Crisis Resolution Team Assessment Tool, CRTAT) de Sonia Johnson es una herramienta diseñada para para medir la efectividad de los CRT y la duración de la intervención en crisis. Establece un límite de seis semanas como el período máximo durante el cual se debe ofrecer la atención en crisis. "Habitar-se durant la fertilitat. Procés creatiu al voltant del cicle menstrual" és un treball de recerca artística introspectiva en el qual s'explica el procés de creació de l'obra "El ser des del cicle menstrual". A través de la multidisciplinarietat artística, tant personal com d'influències i referents propis d'artistes feministes, es presenta la gralla dins d'una perfomance, creant aquesta nova obra. El treball també busca reivindicar la importància del creixement personal dins els processos creatius, i visibilitzar la cicle menstrual des d'una vessant social, tenint en compte el tabú que l'acompanya. "Habitar-se durant la fertilitat. Procés creatiu al voltant del cicle menstrual" es un trabajo de búsqueda artística introspectiva en el que se explica el proceso creativo de la obra "El ser des del cicle menstrual". Mediante la multidisciplinariedad artística, tanto personal como de influencias y referentes propios de artistas feministas, se presenta la gralla dentro de una performance, creando esta nueva obra. El trabajo también busca reivindicar la importancia del crecimiento personal dentro de los procesos creativos, i visibilizar el ciclo menstrual desde una vertiente social, teniendo en cuenta el tabú que le acompaña. Procés creatiu al voltant del cicle menstrual" is a work of introspective artistic research in which the creative process of the work "El ser des del cicle menstrual" is explained. The work also seeks to vindicate the Importance of personal growth within creative processes and make the menstrual cycle visible from a social point of view, bearing in mind the taboo that accompanies it.

24. Eigenstate versus Zeeman‐based approaches to the solid effect

Abstract

The solid effect is one of the simplest and most effective mechanisms for dynamic nuclear polarization. It involves the exchange of polarization between one electron and one nuclear spin coupled via the hyperfine interaction. Even for such a small spin system, the theoretical understanding is complicated by the contact with the lattice and the microwave irradiation. Both being weak, they can be treated within perturbation theory. In this work, we analyze the two most popular perturbation schemes: the Zeeman and the eigenstate-based approaches, which differ in the way the hyperfine interaction is treated. For both schemes, we derive from first principles an effective Liouville equation that describes the density matrix of the spin system; we then study numerically the behavior of the nuclear polarization for several values of the hyperfine coupling. In general, we obtain that the Zeeman-based approach underestimates the value of the nuclear polarization. By performing a projection onto the diagonal part of the spin-system density matrix, we are able to understand the origin of the discrepancy, which is due to the presence of parasite leakage transitions appearing whenever the Zeeman basis is employed.

Abstract

Cellular Automata (CA) models have been applied to different fields of knowledge, from cryptography, arts, to the modelling and simulation of complex systems. In the latter area, however, sometimes the ability to properly represent complex interacting but distinct dynamics taking place within a given area is limited by the need of calibrating models in which the number of necessary parameters grows. Hidden costs related to the identification of specific values or plausible ranges for parameters can become overwhelming. Here we model the assembly process of plant communities after fire. The number of elements of plant communities (plants of different species) and processes involved (seed dispersal, plant recruitment, competence, etc.) require a high degree of parameterization because all those processes have great relevance on the evolution of the system, for instance during post-fire recovery. The fire, aside negative effects, releases a number of resources (space, nutrients,..) making them easily available for plants, which promptly use those resources so they are no longer available to other plants after a period of time which usually ranges from months to years. In the meantime, the plasticity of species in relation to fire and environment and the interactions among species determine the direction of changes to occur. In this work we present a novel approach to the assembly of plant communities after fire using CA. In particular we gather the preliminary results of their application and give a feasible way to optimize the parameterization of the model.

Abstract

Background— Patients with kidney disease have disordered bone and mineral metabolism, including elevated serum concentrations of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23). These elevated concentrations are associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The objective was to determine the effects of the calcimimetic cinacalcet (versus placebo) on reducing serum FGF23 and whether changes in FGF23 are associated with death and cardiovascular events. Methods and Results— This was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial comparing cinacalcet to placebo in addition to conventional therapy (phosphate binders/vitamin D) in patients receiving hemodialysis with secondary hyperparathyroidism (intact parathyroid hormone ≥300 pg/mL). The primary study end point was time to death or a first nonfatal cardiovascular event (myocardial infarction, hospitalization for angina, heart failure, or a peripheral vascular event). This analysis included 2985 patients (77% of randomized) with serum samples at baseline and 2602 patients (67%) with samples at both baseline and week 20. The results demonstrated that a significantly larger proportion of patients randomized to cinacalcet had ≥30% (68% versus 28%) reductions in FGF23. Among patients randomized to cinacalcet, a ≥30% reduction in FGF23 between baseline and week 20 was associated with a nominally significant reduction in the primary composite end point (relative hazard, 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.69–0.98), cardiovascular mortality (relative hazard, 0.66; 95% confidence interval, 0.50–0.87), sudden cardiac death (relative hazard, 0.57; 95% confidence interval, 0.37–0.86), and heart failure (relative hazard, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.48–0.99). Conclusions— Treatment with cinacalcet significantly lowers serum FGF23. Treatment-induced reductions in serum FGF23 are associated with lower rates of cardiovascular death and major cardiovascular events. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov . Abstract

La descoberta de la teoria de les neurones mirall com a substrat neurològic de la conducta imitativa, l’empatia i elsentit de jo, i el dèficit d’aquests aspectes en les persones amb autisme, revaloritza l’ús de la imitació en psicoteràpia. Es presenta la integració de la imitació no verbal i vocàlica en el disseny d’un tractament psicoanalític de 20 sessions, adreçata infants de 4 anys amb autisme sever. S’expliquen amb vinyetes clíniques diferents moments de la intervenció. Es reflexiona sobre l’ús de tècniques adequades per a cada pacient en funció de la seva psicopatologia i moment maduratiu.

Abstract

Cellular Automata (CA) models have been applied to different fields of knowledge, from cryptography, arts, to the modelling and simulation of complex systems. In the latter area, however, sometimes the ability to properly represent complex interacting but distinct dynamics taking place within a given area is limited by the need of calibrating models in which the number of necessary parameters grows. Hidden costs related to the identification of specific values or plausible ranges for parameters can become overwhelming. Here we model the assembly process of plant communities after fire. The number of elements of plant communities (plants of different species) and processes involved (seed dispersal, plant recruitment, competence, etc.) require a high degree of parameterization because all those processes have great relevance on the evolution of the system, for instance during post-fire recovery. The fire, aside negative effects, releases a number of resources (space, nutrients, ...) making them easily available for plants, which promptly use those resources so they are no longer available to other plants after a period of time which usually ranges from months to years. In the meantime, the plasticity of species in relation to fire and environment and the interactions among species determine the direction of changes to occur. In this work we present a novel approach to the assembly of plant communities after fire using CA. In particular we gather the preliminary results of their application and give a feasible way to optimize the parameterization of the model.

Abstract

The automotive industry is constantly involved in the development of new projects aimed at reducing weight, fuel consumptions and costs while improving passengers¿ safety. In order to achieve these increasing demands, Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) have been introduced in recent years reducing vehicle structure weights and improving the crashworthiness. With the increase in the bearing capacity of crash-relevant structural components, the sheet metal joining techniques such as adhesive bonding and resistance spot welding (RSW) become critical. In order to develop the vehicle structure in these new projects, full-vehicle crash finite element simulations are usually performed. Simplified beam-like models are currently used in these simulations (with thousands of spot welds) to represent RSW joints response. The maximum bearing force of these models are fitted using large experimental campaigns, considering all the main factors that have the highest influence on the fracture response of a welded joint. The objective of this thesis is twofold: (1) to develop a model that is able to partially replace the extensive experimental campaign in providing parameters for the crash simulation simplified spot weld models, and (2) to gain understanding of spot weld joints failure response in order to improve the current simplified models. To achieve these objectives, a detailed spot weld model for the prediction of spot weld failure in joints in AHSS sheets is presented. The presented model includes a definition of the local material properties as well as the geometry features of a spot weld. In addition, an industrially suited fracture criterion, i.e. robust and without a long-term calibration, is used for the prediction of maximum force. An energetic fracture criterion based on the use of elastic-plastic fracture-mechanics is identified as the better suited for the prediction of spot weld failure and joint bearing capacity. The J-integral is evaluated in the weld notch and this value is compared with a material parameter, the fracture toughness, in order to obtain the joint maximum force. The presented detailed FE spot weld model is validated to joints of two different steel grades of the AHSS family usually present in the current vehicle structure, a hot formed martensitic boron-alloyed steel (22MnB5) and a cold formed dual phase steel (DP 980). The validation is performed comparing the results obtained with the finite element model and the experimental results extracted from an extensive loading test experimental campaign where the main factors that have an influence in the spot weld fracture response are considered. The obtained simulated critical forces of the loading tests present good agreement with the experimental ones in all tested configurations. Finally, based on the presented finite element spot weld model, some recommendations are exposed for extending the model for new combinations and loading conditions. The proposed procedure can be used to reduce the long-term characterization campaigns used to calibrate the joints of a new AHSS grade, where fracture is triggered by stress concentration ahead of a notch. Furthermore, some recommendations for the future structure design are given taking into account the information obtained with the present model., La industria del automóvil está constantemente involucrada en el desarrollo de nuevos proyectos persiguiendo la reducción de pesos, consumos de combustible y costes, así como mejoras en seguridad. Par alcanzar estas demandas, en los últimos años los llamados aceros avanzados de muy alta resistencia (AHSS) se han introducido reduciendo el peso de la estructura de los vehículos y mejorando su respuesta en caso de accidente. Con la mejora de la resistencia de los componentes estructurales relevantes durante un impacto a alta velocidad, las técnicas de unión de chapas de metal, como los adhesivos o los puntos de soldadura por resistencia (RSW), han pasado a tener un papel crucial. Para desarrollar la estructura de estos nuevos proyectos, se realizan habitualmente simulaciones de elementos finitos de vehículo completo. En estas simulaciones, con miles de puntos de soldadura, se usan modelos simplificados en los que la fuerza máxima según la unión y el caso de carga es obtenida mediante extensas campañas experimentales. Esta tesis tiene dos objetivos principales: (1) desarrollo de un modelo capaz de reemplazar parcialmente las extensas campañas experimentales que proveen de parámetros a los modelos simplificados de puntos de soldadura usados para la simulación de choque, (2) mejor comprensión de la respuesta a fallo de las uniones soldadas por puntos para mejorar los actuales modelos simplificados. Par cumplir estos objetivos se presenta un modelo detallado de elementos finitos. El modelo incluye la definición de las propiedades mecánicas locales así como las características geométricas de un punto de soldadura. Además, para la predicción de la fuerza máxima se aplica un criterio de fractura adecuado a la industria, es decir, robusto y a la vez sin la necesidad de una larga calibración. Se identifica un criterio energético de fractura basado en la mecánica de fractura elasto-plástica como el más adecuado para obtener la capacidad de carga de las uniones. La fuerza máxima de las uniones se obtiene al evaluar la concentración de tensiones alrededor de la entalla de soldadura mediante la integral J y comparándola con un parámetro del material (tenacidad de fractura). El modelo presentado es validado para uniones soldadas de dos tipos de aceros de la familia de los AHSS presentes habitualmente en la estructura de los vehículos modernos, un acero martensítico al boro estampado en caliente (22MnB5) y un acero de fase dual de estampación en frio (DP 980). Esta validación se realiza comparando los resultados de fuerza máximas obtenidos por el modelo de elementos finitos con los resultados experimentales obtenidos de una extensa campaña experimental donde se tienen en cuenta los principales factoras que tienen influencia en la fractura. Los resultados de las fuerzas críticas obtenidas de los ensayos experimentales de carga presentan una gran concordancia con la simulación para todas las configuraciones testeadas. Finalmente, basándose en el modelo detallado presentado se proponen algunas recomendaciones para extenderlo para nuevas combinaciones y condiciones de carga, así como recomendaciones sobre el diseño de estructuras teniendo en cuenta como se cargas los puntos de soldadura en distintas condiciones. El procedimiento propuesto puede ser usado para reducir las extensas campañas experimentales empleadas en la caracterización de uniones en nuevos tipos de aceros de alta resistencia, donde la fractura es desencadenada por concentración de tensiones alrededor de la entalla de soldadura.

Abstract

Fracture mechanics of brittle materials has focused on bulk materials with isotropic surface energy. In this situation different physical principles for crack path selection are very similar or even equivalent. The situation is radically different when considering crack propagation in brittle materials with anisotropic surface energy. Such materials are important in applications involving single crystals, extruded polymers, or geological and organic materials. When this anisotropy is strong, the phenomenology of crack propagation becomes very rich, with forbidden crack propagation directions or complex sawtooth crack patterns. Thus, this situation interrogates fundamental issues in fracture mechanics, including the principles behind the selection of crack direction. Similarly, tearing of brittle thin elastic sheets, ubiquitous in nature, technology and daily life, challenges our understanding of fracture. Since tearing typically involves large geometric nonlinearity, it is not clear whether the stress intensity factors are meaningful or if and how they determine crack propagation. Geometry, together with the interplay between stretching and bending deformation, leads to complex behaviors, restricting analytical approximate solutions to very simplified settings and specific parameter regimes. In both situations, a rich and nontrivial experimental record has been successfully understood in terms of simple energetic models. However, general modeling approaches to either fracture in the presence of strong surface energy anisotropy or to tearing, capable of exploring new physics, have been lacking. The success of energetic simple models suggests that variational theories of brittle fracture may provide a unifying and general framework capable of dealing with the more general situations considered here. To address fracture in materials with strongly anisotropic surface energy, we propose a variational phase-field model resorting to the extended Cahn-Hilliard framework proposed in the context of crystal growth. Previous phase-field models for anisotropic fracture were formulated in a framework only allowing for weak anisotropy. We implement numerically our higher-order phase-field model with smooth local maximum entropy approximants in a direct Galerkin method. The numerical results exhibit all the features of strongly anisotropic fracture, and reproduce strikingly well recent experimental observations. To explore tearing of thin films, we develop a geometrically exact model and a computational framework coupling elasticity (stretching and bending), fracture, and adhesion to a substrate. We numerically implement the model with subdivision surface finite elements. Our simulations qualitatively and quantitatively reproduced the crack patterns observed in tearing experiments. Finally, we examine how shell geometry affects fracture. As suggested by previous results and our own phase-field simulations, shell shape dramatically affects crack evolution and the effective toughness of the shell structure. To gain insight and eventually develop new concepts for optimizing the design of thin shell structures, we derive the configurational force conjugate to crack extension for Koiter's linear thin shell theory. We identify the conservative contribution to this force through an Eshelby tensor, as well as non-conservative contributions arising from curvature., La mécanica de fractura frágil se ha centrado en materiales tridimensionales con una energía de superficie isotrópica. En esta situación, los diferentes principios para la selección del camino de la fisura son muy similares, o incluso equivalentes. La situación es radicalmente opuesta cuando se considera la propagación de fisuras en medios con energía de superficie anisótropa. Estos materiales son importantes en aplicaciones que involucran materiales cristalinos, polímeros extrudidos, o materiales orgánicos y geológicos. Cuando la anisotropía es fuerte, el fenómeno de la propagación de fisuras es muy rico, con direcciones de propagación prohibidas o complejos patrones de ruptura en dientes de sierra. Por tanto, esta situación plantea cuestiones fundamentales en la mecánica de la fractura, incluyendo los principios de selección de la dirección de propagación de la fractura. Igualmente, el proceso de rasgado de láminas delgadas y frágiles, comunes en la naturaleza, la tecnología y la vida diaria, desafía nuestro entendimiento de la fractura. Dado que el rasgado de estas láminas típicamente involucra grandes no linealidades geométricas, no está claro si los factores de intensidad de esfuerzos son válidos o si, y en tal caso cómo determinan la propagación de fisuras. La interacción entre la geometría, las deformaciones y la curvatura da lugar a comportamientos complejos, lo que restringe las soluciones analíticas aproximadas a ejemplos muy simplificados y a regímenes de parámetros limitados. En ambas situaciones, se han podido interpretar experimentos no triviales con modelos energéticos simples. Sin embargo, no se ha profundizado en modelos generales de fractura en presencia de energía de superficie fuertemente anisótropa o en láminas delgadas, ambas interesantes por su capacidad para explorar nueva física. El mencionado éxito de los modelos energéticos simplificados sugiere que las teorías variacionales de fractura en medios frágiles pueden proveer un marco unificador para considerar situaciones más generales, como las que se consideran en este trabajo. Para caracterizar la fractura en materiales con energía de superficie fuertemente anisótropa, proponemos un modelo variacional de campo de fase basado en el modelo extendido de Cahn-Hilliard. Los modelos de campo de fase existentes para la fractura anisótropa fueron formulados en un contexto que sólo admite anisotropía débil. En este trabajo, implementamos numéricamente nuestro modelo de campo de fase de alto orden con aproximantes locales de máxima entropía en un método directo de Garlerkin. Los resultados numéricos muestran todas las características de fractura con anisotropía fuerte, y reproducen llamativamente bien las últimas observaciones experimentales. Para explorar el rasgado de láminas delgadas, desarrollamos un modelo geométricamente exacto y un esquema computacional que acopla elasticidad (estiramiento y flexión), fractura, y la adhesión a un substrato. Implementamos numéricamente el modelo con elementos finitos basados en superficies de subdivisión. Nuestras simulaciones reproducen los patrones de ruptura, tanto cualitativamente como cuantitativamente, observados en los experimentos de rasgado. Finalmente, examinamos cómo la geometría de la lámina afecta la fractura. Como ha sido sugerido en resultados previos y en nuestras propias simulaciones de campo de fase, la forma de la lámina afecta dramáticamente la evolución de fisuras y la resistencia efectiva del material. Para comprender mejor estos fenómenos y con el objetivo de desarrollar nuevos conceptos para la optimización del diseño de estructuras de láminas delgadas, derivamos la fuerza configuracional conjugada a la extensión de la fractura para la teoría lineal de láminas delgadas de Koiter. Identificamos las contribuciones conservativas a esta fuerza a través del tensor de Eshelby, así como las contriuciones no conservativas que aparecen por el efecto de la curvatura.

Abstract

Background andobjectivesThecalcimimeticcinacalcet reduced therisk of death or cardiovascular (CV) events in older, but not younger, patients with moderate to severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) who were receiving hemodialysis. To determine whether the lower risk in younger patients might be due to lower baseline CV risk and more frequent use of cointerventions that reduce parathyroid hormone (kidney transplantation, parathyroidectomy, and commercial cinacalcet use), this study examined the effects of cinacalcet in older ($65 years, n=1005) and younger (,65 years, n=2878) patients. Design, setting, participants, & measurements Evaluation of Cinacalcet HCl Therapy to Lower Cardiovascular Events (EVOLVE) was a global, multicenter, randomized placebo-controlled trial in 3883 prevalent patients on hemodialysis, whose outcomes included death, major CV events, and development of severe unremitting HPT. The age subgroup analysis was prespecified. ResultsOlderpatients hadhigher baselineprevalenceof diabetesmellitusandCV comorbidity. Annualizedrates of kidney transplantation and parathyroidectomy were .3-fold higher in younger relative to older patients and were more frequent in patients randomized to placebo. In older patients, the adjusted relative hazard (95% confidence interval) for the primary composite (CV) end point (cinacalcet versus placebo) was 0.70 (0.60 to 0.81); in younger patients, the relative hazard was 0.97 (0.86 to 1.09). Corresponding adjusted relative hazards for mortality were 0.68 (0.51 to 0.81) and 0.99 (0.86 to 1.13). Reduction in the risk of severe unremitting HPT was similar in both groups. Conclusions In the EVOLVE trial, cinacalcet decreased the risk of death and of major CV events in older, but not younger, patients with moderate to severe HPT who were receiving hemodialysis. Effect modification by age may be partly explained by differences in underlying CV risk and differential application of cointerventions that reduce parathyroid hormone. Abstract

Background and Objectives: Problematic video game use is a source of concern. In addictions, difficulties with emotional regulation have become an important variable of interest. However, their study in relation to problematic video game use remains insufficient., Methods: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines; 322 studies were screened, resulting in a final sample of k = 18 studies. The methodological quality of these studies was rated as moderate according to the McMaster Critical Review Form for Quantitative studies (CRF-Q)., Results: There is evidence of relationship between different facets of emotional regulation and the presence of problematic video game use. Particularly, video games serve as escape strategy for suppressing emotional expression. There is no consensus regarding the nature of the relationship between emotional regulation, psychopathology, and problematic video game use, with various proposals suggesting moderation and mediation. There is also no consensus regarding the mediation of gender in the relationship between emotional dysregulation and problematic video game use. The level of certainty regarding the validity of the results was moderate., Discussion and Conclusions: Emotional dysregulation plays a role in problematic video game use, especially through strategies as emotional suppression, and lack of abilities to understand and control emotions. It is important to consider emotional regulation as a potential target for research and intervention in clinical populations., Scientific Significance: We review the largest sample of papers on problem gaming and emotion regulation to date. 44. A multi-proxy stalagmite record indicates a shift in forcing of twentieth century drought events in Normandy.

Abstract

Drought events are increasingly impacting Europe. The study of past droughts helps disentangle the different factors that trigger hydrological drought, helping to forecast future drought severity. Here we identify the historical drought events of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in geochemical records of a stalagmite from Caumont cave in Northern France and develop a mechanistic understanding of their root causes. Subannually-resolved stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C) and trace element data are directly compared with historical climatic records. δ 13 C, Mg, and Sr peaks align well with most of the historical drought events of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The comparison reveals a good correspondence between summer effective rainfall and δ 13 C, Mg, and Sr concentrations. Further comparison of geochemical records with the precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) reveals a change in the drought forcings for the past two decades. During most of the twentieth century, droughts appear driven by a pluvial regime, whereas since the late 1990s, drought was driven by higher evapotranspiration due to increased temperature., (© 2024. 45. Drivers of Wolf Activity in a Human-Dominated Landscape and Its Individual Variability Toward Anthropogenic Disturbance.

Abstract

Wolves ( Canis lupus) exhibit contrasted activity patterns along their distribution range. The shift from diurnal to nocturnal habits within and among populations appears to be primarily driven by localized levels of human activity, with ambivalent responses toward such disturbance reported among populations. Yet, the drivers and the underlying individual variability of temporal avoidance patterns toward human remains unexplored. We equipped 26 wolves with GPS-GSM collars, obtaining 54,721 locations. We used step lengths, turning angles, and accelerometer data from recorded locations to infer activity through hidden Markov models (Conners, M. G., T. Michelot, E. I. Heywood, et al. 2021. "Hidden Markov Models Identify Major Movement Modes in Accelerometer and Magnetometer Data From Four Albatross Species." Movement Ecology 9, no. 1: 1-16.). We further explored the probability of activity as a function of a set of proxies of anthropogenic disturbance at different spatial scales and its interaction with different periods of the day by fitting population-level and individual-based hidden Markov models. Wolves were predominantly active during dusk and night, yet variations in activity emerged among individuals across day periods. We did not find clear population-level effects of anthropogenic disturbance predictors, as these were masked by a wide range of individual-specific responses, which varied from positive to negative, with inter-individual variability in responses changing according to different predictors and periods of the day. Our results suggest a non-uniform strategy of wolves in adapting their behavior to human-dominated environments, further underscoring the role of vegetation patches acting as functional refuge cover for buffering the effects of anthropogenic disturbance and boosting the persistence of the species in human-dominated landscapes. This study, for the first time, reveals the individual variability in wolf responses to human disturbance. By fitting hidden Markov models to data from GPS-GSM collars deployed on 26 wolves, we found significant variation between individuals in their responses to different levels of anthropogenic pressure and across different times of day, highlighting a non-uniform strategy for coping with perturbations in human-dominated landscapes. Abstract

Background: Anticholinergic (AC) and sedative medications are a risk factor for cognitive impairment. This study sought to characterize AC and sedative use in older patients seen for outpatient neuropsychological evaluation and evaluate their associations with different cognitive domains. We hypothesized that AC and sedative use would be associated with worse attention/processing speed (AP), executive functioning (EF), and memory., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional chart review of 392 patients (mean [M] age = 72 ± 7.7 years, range = 54-91). Medications were characterized by number of AC medications (≥1 on the Anticholinergic Cognitive Burden Scale [ACB]), number of sedative medications, and polypharmacy (≥5 daily medications). Demographically adjusted composites were calculated for AP, EF, and memory. Bivariate Pearson correlations assessed relationships between medication use and cognition. Multivariate linear regressions evaluated significant medication-cognition associations, controlling for total medications, medical comorbidities, and estimated premorbid cognitive functioning., Results: Polypharmacy was common (80%; n = 314). Most patients (70%; n = 275) used ≥1 sedative medications (range = 0-9). Over half (63%; n = 248) used ≥1 AC drugs (range = 0-7), yet ACB scores were ≤2 in 74% of patients. Sedative use was negatively correlated with AP (r = -0.134, p = 0.008) and EF (r = -0.105, p = 0.04). ACB scores were negatively correlated with AP (r = -0.106, p = 0.037). Sedatives and a priori covariates significantly predicted AP performance (R 2  = 0.127, p < 0.001); using more sedative medications was uniquely associated with worse AP (β = -0.426, p = 0.049). No significant associations were found with memory., Conclusion: AC and sedative medications and polypharmacy were prevalent in this sample of older patients. Though both drug classes had negative relationships with AP and EF, sedatives had a particularly negative association with AP. Contrary to our hypotheses, memory was not associated with medication use; however, anticholinergic burden was low within the sample, and AP and EF deficits may masquerade as memory problems., (© 2024 The American Geriatrics Society.)

47. Multidisciplinary Approach in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Twin Anemia Polycythemia Sequence in Monochorionic Twin Pregnancies: Case Report.

Abstract

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) in monochorionic twin pregnancies is a potentially serious complication caused by unidirectional vascular anastomoses in the placenta, resulting in one anemic donor twin and one polycythemic recipient twin. Diagnosis of this condition is achieved through Doppler ultrasound assessment of the difference between the MoM of the peak systolic velocity of the middle cerebral artery between the twins, establishing the diagnosis with a delta value >0.5 MoM. Management of this situation is individualized and may include intrauterine transfusions, intrauterine laser treatment, and expectant management through ultrasound monitoring of both fetuses to prevent complications. In severe cases, pregnancy termination may be necessary. It is essential that these pregnancies are managed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including obstetricians specialized in fetal medicine and neonatologists, to ensure the best possible outcome for both the mother and the fetuses. Early detection and treatment are crucial in the management of pregnancies complicated by twin anemia-polycythemia sequence. The main objective of this article is to conduct a review of the existing literature on the anemia-polycythemia sequence in monochorionic pregnancies, emphasizing the exceptional nature of the presented case due to its spontaneous occurrence, which has a very low prevalence compared to post-laser TAPS cases. It also discusses the different treatment options, highlighting the importance of expectant management and individualization in each case.

Abstract

Mounting evidence from animal models and human studies indicates that psychostimulants can significantly affect social behaviors. This is not surprising considering that the neural circuits underlying the regulation and expression of social behaviors are highly overlapped with those targeted by psychostimulants, which in most cases have strong rewarding and, consequently, addictive properties. In the present work, we provide an overview regarding the effects of illicit and prescription psychostimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, methylphenidate or modafinil, upon social behaviors such as social play, maternal behavior, aggression, pair bonding and social cognition and how psychostimulants in both animals and humans alter them. Abstract

Atrial fibrillation is the most frequent chronic arrhythmia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Oral anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists and now direct oral anticoagulants have been and are the fundamental pillars for the prevention of thromboembolic events. However, there are no randomized clinical trials on the risk-benefit profile of oral anticoagulation in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 on peritoneal dialysis and there is little evidence in the literature in this population. The objective of our study was to know the prevalence, treatment and professionals involved in the management of atrial fibrillation in peritoneal dialysis patients. For this purpose, we performed a descriptive analysis through a survey sent to different peritoneal dialysis units in Spain. A total of 1,403 patients on peritoneal dialysis were included in the study, of whom 186 (13.2%) had non-valvular atrial fibrillation. In addition, the assessment of the scores of thromboembolic and bleeding risks for the indication of oral anticoagulation was mainly carried out by the cardiologist (60% of the units), as well as its prescription (cardiologist 47% or in consensus with the nephrologist 43%). In summary, patients on peritoneal dialysis have a remarkable prevalence of non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Patients frequently receive oral anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists, as well as direct oral anticoagulants. The data obtained regarding the scores used for the assessment of thromboembolic and bleeding risk, treatment and involvement by Nephrology indicates that there is a need for training and involvement of the nephrologist in this pathology., (Copyright © 2024. 50. Switchable tribology of ferroelectrics.

Abstract

Switchable tribological properties of ferroelectrics offer an alternative route to visualize and control ferroelectric domains. Here, we observe the switchable friction and wear behavior of ferroelectrics using a nanoscale scanning probe-down domains have lower friction coefficients and show slower wear rates than up domains and can be used as smart masks. This asymmetry is enabled by flexoelectrically coupled polarization in the up and down domains under a sufficiently high contact force. Moreover, we determine that this polarization-sensitive tribological asymmetry is widely applicable across various ferroelectrics with different chemical compositions and crystalline symmetry. Finally, using this switchable tribology and multi-pass patterning with a domain-based dynamic smart mask, we demonstrate three-dimensional nanostructuring exploiting the asymmetric wear rates of up and down domains, which can, furthermore, be scaled up to technologically relevant (mm-cm) size.
