We have prepared and characterized atomically well-defined model systems for ceria-supported Pt–Co core–shell catalysts. Pt@Co and Co@Pt core–shell nanostructures were grown on well-ordered CeO2(111) films on Cu(111) by physical vapour deposition of Pt and Co metals in ultrahigh vacuum and investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The deposition of Co onto CeO2(111) yields Co–CeO2(111) solid solution at low Co coverage (0.5 ML), followed by the growth of metallic Co nanoparticles at higher Co coverages. Both Pt@Co and Co@Pt model structures are stable against sintering in the temperature range between 300 and 500 K. After annealing at 500 K, the Pt@Co nanostructure contains nearly pure Co-shell while the Pt-shell in the Co@Pt is partially covered by metallic Co. Above 550 K, the re-ordering in the near surface regions yields a subsurface Pt–Co alloy and Pt-rich shells in both Pt@Co and Co@Pt nanostructures. In the case of Co@Pt nanoparticles, the chemical ordering in the near surface region depends on the initial thickness of the deposited Pt-shell. Annealing of the Co@Pt nanostructures in the presence of O2 triggers the decomposition of Pt–Co alloy along with the oxidation of Co, regardless of the thickness of the initial Pt-shell. Progressive oxidation of Co coupled with adsorbate-induced Co segregation leads to the formation of thick CoO layers on the surfaces of the supported Co@Pt nanostructures. This process is accompanied by the disintegration of the CeO2(111) film and encapsulation of oxidized Co@Pt nanostructures by CeO2 upon annealing in O2 above 550 K. Notably, during oxidation and reduction cycles with O2 and H2 at different temperatures, the changes in the structure and chemical composition of supported Co@Pt nanostructures were driven mainly by oxidation while reduction treatments had little effect regardless of the initial thickness of the Pt-shell.

Quantitative assessment of the charge transfer phenomena in cobalt oxides and cobalt complexes is essential for the design of advanced catalytic materials. We propose a method for the evaluation of the oxidation state of cobalt oxides with mixed valence states using resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The method is based on the calculation of the resonant enhancement ratio (RER) from the heights of the resonant features associated with the Co3+ and Co2+ states. The nature of the corresponding states was corroborated by means of density functional calculations. We employed a well-ordered Co3O4(111) film to calibrate the RER with respect to the atomic Co3+/Co2+ ratio. The method was applied to monitor the reduction of a well-ordered Co3O4(111) film to CoO(111) upon annealing under exposure to isopropanol. We demonstrate that this method yields the stoichiometry of cobalt oxides at a level of accuracy that cannot be achieved when fitting the Co 2p core level spectra.

Achieving high stability of supported noble metal nanoparticles with respect to sintering is one of the major challenges in electrocatalysis. In this study, we explored the role of metal–support interaction in stabilizing the morphology of a well-defined model electrode consisting of Pt nanoparticles supported on well-ordered Co3O4(111) films on Ir(100). We employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy coupled with an electrochemical cell to analyze changes in the oxidation states of both the supported Pt nanoparticles and Co3O4(111) support as a function of electrode potential. We found that immersion into the aqueous electrolyte at pH 10 (phosphate buffer) has no effect on the integrity and chemical composition of the Co3O4(111) film in a potential window between 0.5 and 1.4 VRHE. At lower potentials, reduction of the Co3O4(111) to Co(OH)2 and metallic Co is accompanied by rapid dissolution of the film. The decomposition mechanisms of ethanol and ethylene glycol on well-ordered stoichiometric CeO2(111) and partially reduced CeO2−x (111) films were investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, and temperature programmed desorption. Both alcohols partially deprotonate upon adsorption at 150 K and subsequent annealing yielding stable ethoxy and ethylenedioxy species. The C–C bond scission in both ethoxy and ethylenedioxy species on stoichiometric CeO2(111) involves formation of acetaldehyde-like intermediates and yields CO and CO2 accompanied by desorption of acetaldehyde, H2O, and H2. This decomposition pathway leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies. In the presence of oxygen vacancies, C–O bond scission in ethoxy species yields C2H4. In contrast, C–C bond scission in ethylenedioxy species on the partially reduced CeO2−x (111) is favored with respect to C–O bond scission and yields methanol, formaldehyde, and CO accompanied by the desorption of H2O and H2. Still, scission of C–O bonds on both sides of the ethylenedioxy species yields minor amounts of accompanying C2H4 and C2H2. C–O bond scission is coupled with a partial recovery of the lattice oxygen in competition with its removal in the form of water.

Electrocatalysis is at the heart of our future transition to a renewable energy system. Most energy storage and conversion technologies for renewables rely on electrocatalytic processes and, with increasing availability of cheap electrical energy from renewables, chemical production will witness electrification in the near future1-3. However, our fundamental understanding of electrocatalysis lags behind the field of classical heterogeneous catalysis that has been the dominating chemical technology for a long time. Here, we describe a new strategy to advance fundamental studies on electrocatalytic materials. We propose to 'electrify' complex oxide-based model catalysts made by surface science methods to explore electrocatalytic reactions in liquid electrolytes. We demonstrate the feasibility of this concept by transferring an atomically defined platinum/cobalt oxide model catalyst into the electrochemical environment while preserving its atomic surface structure. Using this approach, we explore particle size effects and identify hitherto unknown metal-support interactions that stabilize oxidized platinum at the nanoparticle interface. The metal-support interactions open a new synergistic reaction pathway that involves both metallic and oxidized platinum. Our results illustrate the potential of the concept, which makes available a systematic approach to build atomically defined model electrodes for fundamental electrocatalytic studies.

The interplay between the metal-support interaction and stability with respect to sintering has been investigated for Pt nanoparticles supported on well-ordered Co3O4(111)/Ir(100) films in UHV and under oxidizing conditions by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) and near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP XPS). The electronic metal-support interaction between Pt and Co3O4(111) associated with charge transfer results in partial reduction of Co3O4(111) yielding partially oxidized Ptδ+ species at the interface. The stability of the supported Pt particles is coupled with the oxidation state of Ptδ+ species, which can be reduced or oxidized depending on the Pt coverage and reactive environment. Annealing of Pt/Co3O4(111)/Ir(100) in UHV triggers the reduction of Ptδ+ species. At higher temperature, reverse spillover of oxygen to the Pt nanoparticles is accompanied by reduction of Co3O4(111). Under these conditions, the oxidation state of Ptδ+ species depends strongly on Pt coverage. Thus, at low Pt coverage (0.3 ML Pt), Ptδ+ is converted to Pt4+, at intermediate coverage (1.3 ML Pt), Ptδ+ remains stable, and at high Pt coverage (1.93 ML), Ptδ+ is reduced to Pt0. Sintering of Pt particles is associated with the reduction of the Ptδ+ species. This process is prevented under oxidizing conditions due to the formation of an interfacial oxide PtOx. The formation of an interfacial PtOx is observed at 300 K under exposure to 1 × 10−6 mbar O2 at Pt coverages below 1.3 ML. Using NAP XPS, we observe the formation of an interfacial PtOx at high Pt coverage (2.0 ML) in an oxygen atmosphere (1 mbar) at 300 K while the formation of surface PtOx is kinetically hindered and occurs above 550 K only.

The stability and the conversion of atomically dispersed Pt2+ species to sub-nanometer Pt particles have been investigated as a function of the Sn concentration in Pt–CeO2 films by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, and angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with density functional calculations. The deposition of Sn onto the Pt–CeO2 films triggers the reduction of Ce4+ cations to Ce3+ yielding Sn2+ cations. Consecutively, the redox coupling between the Ce3+ and Pt2+ species triggers the reduction of Pt2+ species yielding sub-nanometer Pt particles. The onset of reduction of Pt2+ species is directly related to the concentration of Ce3+ centers which, in turn, is controlled by the concentration of Sn2+ cations in the Pt–CeO2 film. On average, the formation of 6Ce3+ centers corresponding to the adsorption of 3Sn atoms gives rise to the reduction of one Pt2+ species. The analysis of the depth distribution of Sn atoms in the Pt–CeO2 films revealed preferential adsorption of Sn2+ at the surface followed by diffusion of Sn2+ ions into the bulk at higher Sn coverages. Density functional modeling suggested that the adsorption of three Sn atoms in the vicinity of the Pt2+ species results in a rearrangement of the local coordination accompanied by substantial destabilization of the Pt2+ species followed by its conversion to Pt0 atoms. The formation of sub-nanometer Pt particles is coupled with re-oxidation of two Ce3+ centers per one Pt2+ species reduced. Annealing of the Pt–CeO2 films in the presence of metallic Sn also leads to the reduction of the Pt2+ species due to thermally triggered oxidation of metallic Sn residues followed by diffusion of Sn2+ into the bulk. Annealing of the Pt–CeO2 films to temperatures above 600 K results in a loss of Sn yielding sub-nanometer Pt particles supported on nearly stoichiometric and Sn-free CeO2 films.

Iridium-based materials are among the most active bifunctional catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis. We have investigated the properties of atomically defined Ir/CeO2(111) model systems supported on Cu(111) and Ru(0001) by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy, and temperature programmed desorption. Electronic metal-support interactions in the Ir/CeO2(111) system are accompanied by charge transfer and partial reduction of CeO2(111). The magnitude of the charge transfer depends strongly on the Ir coverage. The Ir/CeO2(111) system is stable against sintering upon annealing to 600 K in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Annealing of Ir/CeO2(111) in UHV triggers the reverse oxygen spillover above 450 K. The interaction of hydrogen with Ir/CeO2(111) involves hydrogen spillover and reversible spillover between 100 and 400 K accompanied by the formation of water above 190 K. Formation of water coupled with the strong reduction of CeO2(111) represents the dominant reaction channel upon annealing in H2 above 450 K. The interaction of Ir/CeO2(111) with oxygen has been investigated at moderate and NAP conditions. Additionally, the formation and stability of iridium oxide prepared by deposition of Ir in oxygen atmosphere was investigated upon annealing in UHV and under exposure to H2. The oxidation of Ir nanoparticles under NAP conditions yields stable IrOx nanoparticles. The stability of Ir and IrOx nanoparticles under oxidizing conditions is hampered, however, by encapsulation by cerium oxide above 450 K and additionally by copper and ruthenium oxides under NAP conditions.

The stability of atomically dispersed Pt2+ species on the surface of nanostructured CeO2 films during the reaction with methanol has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The isolated Pt2+ species were prepared at low Pt concentration in Pt–CeO2 film. Additionally, Pt2+ species coexisting with metallic Pt particles were prepared at high Pt concentration. We found that adsorption of methanol yields similar decomposition products regardless of Pt concentration in Pt–CeO2 films. A small number of oxygen vacancies formed during the methanol decomposition can be replenished in the Pt–CeO2 film with low Pt concentration by diffusion of oxygen from the bulk. In the presence of supported Pt particles, a higher number of oxygen vacancies leads to a partial reduction of the Pt2+ species. The isolated Pt2+ species are reduced under rather strongly reducing conditions only, i.e. during annealing under continuous exposure to methanol. Reduction of isolated Pt2+ species results in the formation of ultra-small Pt particles containing around 25 atoms per particle or less. Such ultra-small Pt particles demonstrate excellent stability against sintering during annealing of Pt–CeO2 film with low Pt concentration under reducing conditions.

The stability and atomic ordering in Pt–Sn nanoalloys supported on CeO2 thin films have been studied by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional calculations. Using CO molecules as a probe, we explored the development of the surface structure of supported Pt–Sn nanoalloys with respect to a reference Pt/CeO2 model system. We found a significant decrease in the density of CO adsorption sites on supported Pt–Sn nanoalloys caused by Sn segregation to the surface upon annealing. Additionally, we found that atomic ordering in Pt–Sn nanoalloys is driven by the balance between the surface segregation energy of Sn atoms and the energy of heteroatomic bond formation. Our calculations demonstrate a clear tendency for Sn segregation to the nanoalloy surface. For Pt105Sn35 and Pt1097Sn386 nanoparticles, we calculated a surface stoichiometry of Pt2Sn which is only slightly dependent on temperature in thermodynamic equilibrium. The analysis of Bader charges in Pt–Sn nanoalloys revealed a strong correlation between the charge and the coordination number of Sn atoms with respect to Pt neighbors. In particular, the magnitude of the charge transfer from Sn to Pt increases as a function of the Sn coordination number.

We have investigated the stability and the reactivity of atomically dispersed Pt, Pd, and Ni species on nanostructured CeO2 films by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional calculations. All three metals reveal specific similarities associated with the high adsorption energy of atomically dispersed Pt2+, Pd2+, and Ni2+ species that exceeds the corresponding cohesive energies of the bulk metals. The corresponding Pt–CeO2, Pd–CeO2, and Ni–CeO2 model catalysts have been prepared in the form of thin films on CeO2(111)/Cu(111) substrates and investigated experimentally under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The atomically dispersed Pt2+, Pd2+, and Ni2+ species were formed exclusively at low concentrations of the corresponding metals. Adsorption and decomposition of acetic acid were studied by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption on Pt/CeO2(111) model catalysts prepared on Cu(111). Reference experiments under identical conditions were performed on stoichiometric CeO2(111), partially reduced CeO2–x, and oxygen pre-exposed O/Pt/CeO2(111)/Cu(111). The principal species formed on all samples during adsorption of acetic acid at 150 K were acetate and molecularly adsorbed acetic acid. On the basis of the differences in the splitting between the methyl and carboxyl/carboxylate groups in the C 1s spectra, we identified the adsorption sites for acetate and molecularly adsorbed acetic acid on Pt/CeO2. During annealing, we detected an increase in the concentration of acetate on CeO2(111) support exclusively in the presence of supported Pt particles. The reactivity of atomically dispersed Pt(2+) species on the surface of nanostructured CeO2 films and the mechanism of H2 activation on these sites have been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional calculations. Isolated Pt(2+) sites are found to be inactive towards H2 dissociation due to high activation energy required for H-H bond scission. Trace amounts of metallic Pt are necessary to initiate H2 dissociation on Pt-CeO2 films. H2 dissociation triggers the reduction of Ce(4+) cations which, in turn, is coupled with the reduction of Pt(2+) species. The mechanism of Pt(2+) reduction involves reverse oxygen spillover and formation of oxygen vacancies on Pt-CeO2 films. Our calculations suggest the existence of a threshold concentration of oxygen vacancies associated with the onset of Pt(2+) reduction.

The formation of a supported Pt–Sn nanoalloy upon reactive metal–oxide interaction between Pt nanoparticles and a Sn–CeO2 substrate has been investigated by means of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and resonant photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional modeling. It was found that Pt deposition onto a Sn–CeO2 substrate triggers the reduction of Sn2+ cations yielding Pt–Sn nanoalloys at 300 K under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Three distinct stages of Pt–Sn nanoalloy formation were identified associated with the growth of (I) ultra-small monometallic Pt particles on a Sn–CeO2 substrate, (II) Pt–Sn nanoalloys on a Sn–CeO2 substrate, and (III) Pt–Sn nanoalloys on a stoichiometric CeO2 substrate. These findings suggest the existence of a critical size of monometallic Pt particles above which the formation of a Pt–Sn nanoalloy becomes favorable. In this respect, density functional modeling revealed a strong dependence of the formation energy of the PtxSn nanoalloy on the size of the Pt particle. Additionally, the thermodynamically favorable bulk and surface Pt/Sn stoichiometries were identified as two parameters that determine the composition of the supported Pt–Sn nanoalloys and limit the extraction of Sn2+ from the Sn–CeO2 substrate. Primarily, the formation of a bulk Pt3Sn alloy phase drives the growth of the Pt–Sn nanoalloy upon Pt deposition at 300 K. Upon annealing, Sn segregation on the surface of the Pt–Sn nanoalloy promotes further extraction of Sn2+ until the thermodynamically stable Pt/Sn concentration ratios of 3 for the bulk and approximately 1.6 for the surface are reached.

Electronic interactions between metal nanoparticles and oxide supports control the functionality of nanomaterials, for example, the stability, the activity, and the selectivity of catalysts.1-5 Such interactions involve electron transfer across the metal/support interface. In this work we quantify this charge transfer on a well-defined platinum/ceria catalyst at particle sizes relevant for heterogeneous catalysis. Combining synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional calculations we show that the charge transfer per Pt atom is largest for Pt particles of around 50 atoms. Here, approximately 1 electron is transferred per 10 Pt atoms from the nanoparticle to the support. For larger particles, the charge transfer reaches its intrinsic limit set by the support. For smaller particles charge transfer is partially suppressed by nucleation at defects. These mechanistic and quantitative insights into charge transfer will help to make better use of particle size effects and electronic metal support interactions in metal/oxide nanomaterials.
