First Online: 22 October 2021, Emotions accompany our daily life, influence our interaction with products, and are essential to understanding human behavior through non-verbal communication. It becomes evident for designers the need to understand how products establish meaningful and emotional experiences, as well as work with tools that allow evaluating emotional responses. This article aims to evaluate the interaction of individuals with a cutlery object, through a case study. In this study, we applied Electroencephalography (EEG) – for the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative data, which allows us to obtain the physiological responses of individuals. The experiment consisted of three blocks of tasks: observing pictures of the product, observing the real product, and touching/handling the real product, based on a homogeneous sample of 11 participants. In the end, the participants answer a questionnaire. The results demonstrate that the questionnaires are an important assessment tool when correlated with other tools. It provided relevant information for the validation of the emotional response, being perceptible the typologies that evoked positive and negative effects, as well as the characteristics of the product that influenced this feeling. Regarding the EEG, the results showthat there are cognitive differences between the frequency bands and the positioning of the electrodes, for the different types of product. This work is part of the project “23 Design Methodology”, which describes the design process applied to creating two-dimensional polygonal artefacts for the construction of three-dimensional forms to support scenographic spaces and presents a design method applied to the educational activity. If, on the one hand, the design process and the design of the artefact are related. On the other hand, to justify its normative position regarding the design process, a design methodology was used that considered the versatility of the projected artefact. Several polygonal forms were explored as an enhancement of the research process. After obtaining the artefact’s final design, a workshop was prepared for students of the product design degree at the University of Minho. In this sense, the students, based on the presented work methodology, idealized and prepared a scenographic space for the show “Piano Caos”, organized by the Educational Service – Casa da Música. Digital technology plays a significant role in everyday life, being increasingly integrated at home, work and leisure activities. Its pervasiveness has been changing consumption habits and social interactions. As a result, the number of digital platforms and services grew exponentially and it is expected to continue to expand in future years. In a world that offers a wide range of digital products to people, it is crucial to develop meaningful products. Taking this into account, it seems important to focus on understanding which attributes should be considered in the development process of digital platforms and services to work towards optimal solutions for society. A sentence completion task was employed to uncover the motivations, emotions and beliefs of a small sample of individuals who work for a Digital Transformation company. The results highlighted the significance of content, usability, aesthetics, customization and trust. Furthermore, a reflection on the themes suggests that usability is foundational, that content and aesthetics arouse interest and customization elicits positive reactions. Remarkably, it was found that a lack of trust causes discomfort and may negatively impact the use of digital solutions., (undefined)

Este artigo faz parte de uma pesquisa multidisciplinar sobre valores e riscos de sistemas ciber-físicos (CPS) em andamento. Apresentamos um recorte da mesma, a partir da perspectiva do design. Com este foco, buscamos entender como os CPS, peças fundamentais da indústria 4.0, podem ser projetados de forma a serem não apenas funcionais, como também contribuirem para o bem-estar das pessoas. Um paralelo semântico foi feito a partir do levantamento bibliográfico sobre valores que são mais importantes num projeto de design, e num projeto de CPS especificamente, com a escala de bem-estar HEMA. Como resultado, é proposto um modelo conceitual teórico com 12 valores que servem como base para desenvolvimento de CPS com foco no bem-estar das pessoas. Por fim, apresentamos uma visão geral das etapas futuras da pesquisa, This article is part of an ongoing multidisciplinary research on the values and risks of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Here we present a snapshot of it, from the design point of view. With this focus in mind, we seek to understand how CPS, as the foundations of Industry 4.0, can be projected in a way that not only works, but also contributes, to people wellbeing. A semantic parallel was made from the bibliographical survey on the most important values in a design project, and in a CPS project specifically, with the HEMA wellbeing scale. As a result, a conceptual theoretical model is proposed with 12 values that serve as a basis for the development of the CPS with a focus on people wellbeing. Finally, we present an overview of future steps of the research.

O ser humano é um ser racional, mas também emocional. Seu inconsciente, englobando características como as emoções, as crenças e as percepções, interfere na tomada de decisão e é inerente às interações. O bem-estar, as experiências, a qualidade de vida, o engajamento e as situações emocionais são pontos tratados pelo design emocional e pelo design positivo. Todavia, a forma de captação dessas informações ainda precisa de atenção. Por sua vez, o Attrakdiff é um questionário de autorrelato, em escala de diferencial semântico, bipolar, constituído por 28 pares de palavras. Ele analisa a experiência do usuário, baseado em quatro dimensões (Atratividade, Qualidade Pragmática, Qualidade de Estimulação Hedônica e Qualidade de Identificação Hedônica). O método também pode ser encontrado na versão mini Attrakdiff, em que o questionário contempla 10 pares de palavras. Sua agilidade na aplicação quando comparado com outros métodos (como a Engenharia Kansei) é uma vantagem, mas a dificuldade em entender alguns termos e o tamanho do questionário são algumas de suas limitações. Diante disso, o presente estudo sugere o Attrakdiff-R, uma versão reduzida do original, contendo 18 pares de palavras. O método foi aplicado para 23 pessoas que trabalhavam em setores essenciais (bancária, industrial e de imprensa) e por isto estavam trabalhando presencialmente em pleno lockdown de março de 2021. O método teve consistência de acordo com o alfa de Cronbach, ele permitiu entender o usuário sob a perspectiva da experiência holística, possibilitando uma forma intermediária de abordagem. Além disso, a ferramenta converge como um possível questionário para entendimento do ser humano diante do design emocional e do design positivo.

The increased usage of available technologies and communication tools provided by the digital age offers numerous opportunities for fashion brands to connect with consumers. Although this matter is known in the literature, there is still much to explore on how to design digital products and experiences for and with emotion. This study focuses on the experience of eight fashion industry professionals through the use of a semi-structured interview as a research method. The higher education market is experiencing a duality between meeting financial and academic goals. In both perspectives, the search for student/consumer satisfaction is a reality. The methods for measuring student satisfaction, in the Brazilian scenario, are mostly based on marketing metrics, without a real understanding of the students' feelings and perceptions. Given this scenario, the question is whether there is a divergence in perception between the student and the former student and if there is any viable technique capable of measuring these issues. In a quantitative survey, with 256 students, 81 former students, and 47 professors, an adaptation of the SAM (Self-Assessment Manikin) scale was carried out, with reason-emotion humanoids and academic stimuli. The main result is that the SAM is a viable, fast and effective model. It addresses institutional technical issues from a personal perspective. Furthermore, the divergence of perception between the former students and the current students was found.

This article discusses methodologies based on EEG - electroencephalography, applied to ED - emotional design and consequently, to the relationship between the user and the product. The objective is to understand whether, based on the brain response, it is possible to identify the individual’s emotional factors when interacting with the products. The process by which users enjoy experiences when interacting with products is the result of a context of use, fundamental for companies as well as for designers in the design and development of more positive new products. In this way, it is crucial to approach different areas of design and engineering on multidisciplinary teams. EEG technology and ED are approached, based on practical cases as well as the evaluations of experiments carried out in the Psychological Neuroscience laboratory that validate the application of these concepts. Through this, it is expected that the contribution of the EEG and the self-report tools, will validate Wellington’s (2007) ethnographic assessment assumptions about motivation and engagement. As a methodology, they are expected to contribute to the creation tools that meet the new trends more focused on semantic values - ideological and playful, than on pragmatic values - practical and critical. Understanding the student’s perception in higher education goes far beyond student retention. Factors such as satisfaction, motivation and irritability points help not only in a more convergent service planning between the institution’s efforts in the face of student expectation, but also in better learning. The perceived quality is difficult to measure and subjective. This work aims to understand the perceived quality of the student and analyze the SERQUAL model for its application in higher education. The 5 dimensions of the model were correlated with academic pillars and the sub-items of each dimension were expanded, according to previous studies. The research was conducted with 15% of the universe of students from a higher education course, which represents 69 students, from a private institution. The results were validated in a focus group of 5 students using tools such as the Ishikawa diagram and the Interrelationship Diagram. As a result of the application it was diagnosed that students have a higher expectation than the service offered, which results in a perceived negative quality. Points such as ‘parking’ and ‘operational service’, which are not essential characteristics of the educational service, directly impact on the perception of quality and consequently on the student’s satisfaction. As a main result it was noticed that the method points out the problems that most bother the students. They tend to analyze the whole and camouflage items in the face of these stressful stimuli. The method proved to be an ally in the detection of problems of perceived felt quality, but that requires beyond the determination of the data to understand the root cause of the results.

This study describes the design process for the development of a concept for a smart mid-layer for fencing apparel, through the integration of flexible textile printed piezoresistive pressure sensors for tracking the performance of blade touch. Pressure sensors based on a 3-layer structure comprising electrodes and a piezoresistive layerwere produced and tested. The sensor is connected a data acquisition board (DAQ), which converts the analogue output voltage to a digital signal. Performance testswere done using software developed in LabVIEW. Compared to the standard electric gilet, this approach allows for a thinner and lighter design. Unlike the normal use of the vest, integrating this solution in a flat pattern piece inside the fencing jacket does not compromise its design and aesthetics. It allows eliminating a layer of clothing, developing a more ergonomic jacket and enables the future integration of wireless technology. First Online 23 October 2020., The perceived quality is subjective and based on a number of factors, including the user’s own experience. In turn, higher education has become a service industry with divergences in short-term (commercial) or medium/ long-term (pedagogical) actions. Thus, an analysis of perceived quality was made using the Attrakdiff method with 282 students from the humanities, exact and health areas (97 of them in production engineering), 81 former students of production engineering and 47 professors, all from the same institution higher education, located in Recife, Brazil. We sought to analyze whether there was a divergence of perceptions. The analysis was performed using the Description of word pairs and the Diagram of Average Values. At the end of the research, in a comparative analysis, it was possible to perceive that teachers and alumni are the ones that have the best perceived quality of the service and the students are the most rigorous. TheAttrakdiff method assists in understanding the holistic quality perception, through four dimensions. In the year 2020 many things changed with the SARSCOV- 2 pandemic, among so many changes at the end of March 2020, in the city of Recife, classes were suspended and returned only in remotemode. Aiming to deepen the Attrakdiff method, two groups of students were invited voluntarily to participate in the survey, answering about their perceptions over the course of nine months. The first group being accompanied in the first semester of 2020: April, start of the remote classes, and June—end of the academic semester. And the second group was accompanied in four moments in the second semester: September, at the end of academic enrollments; October, a little before the first week of academic tests; November, in the period between tests; and December, at the end of the semester.We had 143 valid questionnaires, subdivided in: 28 students in Abril, 17 in June, 18 in September, 33 in October, 30 in November and 17 in December. In this work, we present a study on the possible future of fencing clothing, based on a self-report inquiry-based research methodology asking about the needs, expectations and requirements of the users. It focuses on three issues: (i) identifying the importance of user requirements regarding functionality; (ii) identifying the importance of user design requirements; (iii) identify elements of future preference of the user. This research aims to identify and collect a set of information about features possible to improve in the design process, through a method divided into three parts: sample, script and analysis. Results revealed the lack of knowledge at the various age ranges about what smart clothes are. O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar o uso de duas ferramentas metodológicas de autorrelato, buscando compreender a diferença da experiência emocional de espectadores de Live Streaming Concert e se há uma contribuição para o bem-estar das pessoas num contexto de forma remota. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de formulário on-line, utilizando as técnicas de medição de autorrelato PANAS e PrEmo, verbal e não-verbal respectivamente, além de questionário para averiguar que características ou elementos presentes num Live Streaming Concert causam maior engajamento nos espectadores de forma a lhes proporcionar uma experiência emocional positiva. Foram coletadas respostas de pessoas residentes do Brasil, de diferentes regiões. Foi possível perceber que o uso das ferramentas pode auxiliar no entendimento da experiência emocional do ser humano.

A avareza, como um pecado capital, é o apego demasiado ao bem material e está atrelado ao comportamento e o consumo do colecionador. Este, por sua vez, sacraliza seus artefatos por rituais, organização e procedimento dando significado ao conjunto, partindo do coletivo ao particular e retomando ao coletivo. A materialização é um ato de consumo, com hábitos comportamentais e com preenchimento de lacunas emocionais. Este trabalho faz a conexão entre a coleção, o consumo e o comportamento do colecionador. Com uma pesquisa com 79 colecionadores comuns, ficou evidenciado que cada colecionador tem seus rituais diante de sua coleção e que elas têm representação simbólica e despertam uma gama de sentimentos e emoções positivas.

Advances in Affective Computing are improving the way practitioners collect and analyze data. Eye tracking technology has evolved and equipments that have emerged in the last few years are more affordable and easy to tackle. This has lead to an increasing application of eye tracking to several fields of research. Aware of the potential of this technology, re-searchers in Fashion are embracing it. Through a literature-based overview of the current state of research – which included peer-review journal articles between 2010 and 2018, studies were uncovered to understand how eye tracking is being applied. Results revealed that combining eye tracking with other methods makes it possible to triangulate different data sources, opening new paths for studying the processes that underlie how people ex-plore visual stimulus. This article addresses the process of emotional evaluation of a product, its relevance and suitability to a group of children from 3 to 5 years of age. It focuses on the role of emotions and feelings in human growth and emphasizes the notions of emotional design and positive design, which play a very important role in the stimulation of user experience and in the production of emotions and feelings that encourage civilizational progress. This is an exploratory work that aims to understand the emotions and feelings with a handmade toy, To OSMOPE - the entire team and Educator Alzira Mendes, in particular - for the enthusiastic availability and collaboration in the evaluation session. Given the premise that cycling encourages a healthy lifestyle and promotes well-being, this paper describes the design process for the development of a cycling garment, with embedded electrodes for heart rate measurement to further widen the possibilities of health and performance monitoring, in a practical and unobtru-sive way. Electrodes were produced and tested, using different textile materials and techniques. Emotion is a complex field with growing attention from several other fields of research. Recent scientific discoveries in Neuroscience and Affective Computing are providing insights on the most hidden and unconscious mental processes. By measuring what people experience when using a product, designers can gather useful data that aids them understanding their needs and expectations [1]. Due to the contribution of this new knowledge, Design faces new challenges and great opportunities to evolve. Although information on research methods for measuring emotions is readily accessible in books, scientific journals, websites, among others, no data was found in a coherent and comprehensive manner to manage all. As a result, this article is intended as a framework for three distinct methods for physiology measurement – Eye tracking, Galvanic Skin Response and Facial expression analysis, which resort to sophisticated sensor-based equipment to track specific functions of the human body, namely, pupil dilation, conductivity of the skin and facial behavior. These equipment are becoming affordable, less evasive and portable, making possible field experiments and remote research [2]. These methods were elected because they offer researchers unique paths to explore unconscious behavior. Thus, they are valuable to assess emotional states — prior studies found evidence of patterns in physiological responses for specific emotions [3]. In order to explore these issues, material from books and academic research was gathered and studied. Each method is described, some studies are pointed out and recommendations are given. The literature revealed that these methods provide valuable insights about bodily responses, but they have limitations and disadvantages. Furthermore, it requires technical expertise, knowledge about research planning and analysis of the acquired data sets. Nevertheless, published findings support that the true power of these methods unfolds as they are combined with each other. The main purpose of this article is to briefly inform designers and researchers about specific techniques and equipment available for emotion measurement in order to aid them in making more informed decisions. In addition, it is aimed to encourage different approaches in Design research in order to develop better products and experiences.
