Background: Parents of twins appear to be at increased risk of postpartum depression (PPD), yet little is known about the magnitude and timing of onset in the postpartum period compared to singleton parents. Methods: We conducted a cohort study using the Danish nationwide health registers. We defined a study population of parents that is, mothers and fathers of all twin and singleton livebirths between 1997 and 2019. Postpartum depression was defined as incident depression diagnosis or a redeemed antidepressant prescription from childbirth through 365 days postpartum. We performed a parametric time‐to‐event analysis based on Poisson regression. The time scale was time since birth, modeled using restricted cubic splines. From this we estimated the hazard ratio (HR) representing the momentary risk, and the cumulative risk ratio (RR) over the first year postpartum, in twin compared to singleton parents. Results: The study population was based on 27,095 twin and 1,350,046 singleton births. In adjusted analyses, the HR of twins compared to singletons was highest around 2 months postpartum (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.10–1.49) for mothers, and around 6 months (1.20, 95% CI 1.02–1.42) for fathers. The 6 months adjusted cumulative RR of PPD in twins compared to singletons was 1.24 (95% CI 1.10–1.40) for mothers and 1.11 (95% CI 0.95–1.30) for fathers. Conclusions: Twin mothers had increased risk of PPD compared to singleton mothers, which was driven by an immediate increase after childbirth. The risk among twin fathers was not increased immediately after childbirth, but we found slightly elevated risk around 6 months postpartum. This could suggest diverse patterns of PPD symptomatology in twin parents compared to singleton parents and between mothers and fathers. In the wake of China's "Double Reduction" policy, the prohibition of after-school tutoring centers has led to a rise in parental assistance in their children's homework, concurrently elevating parental anxiety as homework assistant. This research aims to explore the effect of parental self-efficacy on the parental anxiety as homework assistant of elementary students in the context of China's "Double Reduction" policy, particularly focusing on the mediating role of effective homework management by parents. Through a questionnaire survey involving 1032 parents of first through sixth graders in China, this study discovered a significant effect of parental self-efficacy on parental anxiety as homework assistant. It was observed that environment–time and motivation–emotion management mediated the relationship between their self-efficacy and parental anxiety as homework assistant. Notably, a high degree of parental self-efficacy tends to exacerbate educational anxiety by enhancing their focus on environment–time management, while simultaneously, it can mitigate this anxiety by cultivating better motivation–emotion management. This study explores the factors shaping foster care workers’ (FCWs) guidance on shared parenthood between biological parents and foster carers in long-term placements. Using a qualitative longitudinal analysis of interviews with nine FCWs over 6–10 months, four influencing factors were identified: organizational, professional, case-specific, and interpersonal. Organizational factors proved most decisive, leading FCWs to adopt a cautious, incremental approach, while individual assumptions about power, trust, and truth shaped other factors. Policy should consider the balance between stability and shared parenthood. FCWs are encouraged to deepen their understanding of these dynamics to leverage opportunities and mitigate blind spots. This study examined if considerably different caregiving experiences in infancy influence socio–emotional development later in childhood. We included children aged 6–9 years who were, immediately after birth, placed in quality state-run institutions (N = 24) or quality state–run foster care with one family (N = 23). All children have lived in stable families since their adoption before 15 months of age. Children in the comparison group have always lived with their biological parents (N = 25). We found that the previously institutionalized group had significantly more behavioral problems, more dissociative symptoms, and lower empathic behavior scores than the comparison group. The previously fostered group also exhibited more behavioral problems and dissociative symptoms than the comparison group but, notably, significantly fewer behavioral problems than the previously institutionalized group. The findings underscore the beneficial role of foster care compared to institutional care and that quality and consistency of early caregiving play a crucial role in later socio-emotional development. While previous research has focused mainly on mothers, suggesting that dispositional and couple factors influence parental burnout more than sociodemographic factors, little is known about fathers’ experiences and the influence of personality and couple functioning on parental burnout.This cross-sectional study examined the impact of personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale – Brief Form 2.0) and the moderating role of parenting alliance (Parenting Alliance Measure) on parental burnout (Parental Burnout Assessment) among 434 cisgender heterosexual first-time parents (345 primary caregiving mothers: Mage = 38.03, SD = 6.20; 89 secondary caregiving fathers: Mage = 38.29, SD = 6.85) with children aged 0–12 months (49.54% assigned females at birth).Fathers reported lower parental burnout and higher parenting alliance compared to mothers. Greater impairments in self-functioning were associated with increased parental burnout, particularly in mothers. Parenting alliance moderated this relationship; lower perceived parenting alliance amplified the negative impact of self-functioning impairments on parental burnout for both mothers and fathers. Interpersonal functioning did not significantly predict parental burnout.Tailored interventions, especially perinatally, should aim at strengthening parenting alliance and enhancing mothers’ and fathers’ self-functioning, with future research exploring diverse family and cultural contexts for comprehensive intervention strategies. Background: According to recent estimates, around 30 million people have taken Direct-to-Consumer DNA ancestry tests, typically marketed as a fun, harmless and exciting process of discovery. These tests estimate a user's ethnic ancestry, also matching users with biological relations on their database. This matching can produce a surprising 'not parent expected' discovery, where a user learns that an assumed parent (typically the father) is not a biological parent. Such news may negatively affect mental health, self-identity and familial relationships, while prompting the utilization of putatively helpful resources by affected individuals. However, there is a lack of research on this topic. Thus, this study aimed to document the psychosocial experience of adults who have learnt that an assumed parent is not a biological parent via a Direct-to-Consumer DNA ancestry test. Specific objectives include investigating and understanding impact on mental health, familial relationships and subsequent resources mobilized. Methods: To meet these objectives, we conducted an inductive qualitative study, allowing for the documentation of common experiences and perspectives. This involved 52 semi-structured interviews with affected individuals, analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: This resulted in five overlapping themes, namely (i) participants typically described their experience as an extraordinary shock that had a negative impact on their mental health, with some exceptions; (ii) the experience typically led to a severe and troubling disruption of their self-identity, with some exceptions; (iii) the news often ruptured extant familial relationships, especially with the mother, and any experiences with the new biological family were mixed; (iv) participants sought support from a variety of resources including spouses, siblings, and online peer support groups, which were generally considered helpful, with some exceptions; and (v) many participants consulted mental health professionals, who were sometimes considered supportive, but some participants noted that they were ill-equipped to help. Common across these themes were issues of grief, loss and trauma. Conclusions: This study reveals an expanding, vulnerable, and under-researched population facing unique stressors, that may be at high risk of developing a psychiatric disorder. Background: Stillbirth occurs at a rate of 3.0 per thousand in Sweden. However, few studies have focused on the initial experiences of parents facing a stillbirth. The aim of this qualitative study is to deepen and broadly explore parents' initial experiences, perceptions, internal processes and strategies from the moment of suspicion or awareness of stillbirth until one month after the event. Methods: Ten individual in-depth interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2023, and data were evaluated using thematic network analysis. Results: Two key themes emerged: 'Following the journey – from suspicion to acceptance' and 'Support, structured activities and processes after stillbirth'. These themes captured the significant consequences of a sudden, unexpected and devastating end to pregnancy. The suspicion and eventual diagnosis of stillbirth were initially associated with sudden discomfort, fear, overwhelming grief, and intense pain. Nevertheless, a vaginal birth was regarded as the optimal mode of delivery for both physical and emotional wellbeing. Caring for the stillborn baby through physical proximity for an extended period of time helped parents comprehend and cope with their grief, while also affirming their sense of parenthood. Conclusions: This study sheds light on the profound and devastating impact of stillbirth on parents who are confronted with the loss of their long-awaited and cherished baby. The intense grief and pain experienced by parents during the first month after stillbirth were described as an ongoing heavy burden, persisting day and night, and reflected in poor/very poor mental health. Despite the immense challenges faced by parents, the study highlights the importance of developing individual coping strategies to deal with this tragic and irreversible life-changing event. Individuals who perceive the caregiving they received from their parents as more caring tend to bond better with their infants and show more sensitive parenting behaviors. Early caregiving experiences are also related to differences in the functions of hormonal systems, including the oxytocinergic system. The current study examined how perceptions of childhood maternal care relate to parenting behaviors, oxytocin levels, and neural responses to infant stimuli. Perceived childhood maternal care was measured using the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) for 54 first-time birthing parents. Salivary oxytocin and observations of parenting behaviors were assessed during parent–infant play at 3.5 months postpartum. Neural activation while listening to infant cry was measured with fMRI. More positive perceptions of childhood maternal care and higher oxytocin were interactively related to greater anterior cingulate activation to own infant's cry. Higher oxytocin levels were associated with reduced left cuneus activation in response to own infant's cry when compared with control cry and matched noise. Findings suggested that positive memories of childhood caregiving may have protective functions for birthing parents with high oxytocin levels during the early postpartum period, a time when parents need to manage increased stress and form an exclusive bond with their baby. Different types of early-life adversity (ELA) have been associated with children's brain structure and function. However, understanding the disparate influence of distinct adversity exposures on the developing brain remains a major challenge. This study investigates the neural correlates of 10 robust dimensions of ELA identified through exploratory factor analysis in a large community sample of youth from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Brain age models were trained, validated, and tested separately on T1-weighted (n = 9524), diffusion tensor (n = 8834), and resting-state functional (n = 8233) magnetic resonance imaging data from two time points (mean age = 10.7 years, SD = 1.2, age range = 8.9–13.8 years). Bayesian multilevel modeling supported distinct associations between different types of ELA exposures and younger- and older-looking brains. Dimensions generally related to emotional neglect, such as lack of primary and secondary caregiver support and lack of caregiver supervision, were associated with lower brain age gaps, i.e., younger-looking brains. In contrast, dimensions generally related to caregiver psychopathology, trauma exposure, family aggression, substance use and separation from biological parent, and socioeconomic disadvantage and neighborhood safety were associated with higher brain age gaps, i.e., older-looking brains. The findings suggest that dimensions of ELA are differentially associated with distinct neurodevelopmental patterns, indicative of dimension-specific delayed and accelerated brain maturation. To call to attention the often-overlooked aspect of pediatric transgender care: the importance of fertility preservation prior to instituting gender-affirming therapy. The transgender population has long been marginalized by society. Societal stigmata, fear to seek care, and dearth of provider knowledge regarding transgender health issues have caused disparities to widen. Gender-affirming procedures and hormone therapy affect the long-term reproductive potential of transgender individuals. While cost concerns and insurance coverage regarding oncofertility is a prominent area of discussion, the transgender community is often excluded. Sixteen genetically XY females, followed by their multidisciplinary transgender care teams, were interested in starting hormone therapy due to impending onset and/or progression of puberty. Their physicians were aware of fertility struggles after undergoing hormone therapy and therefore referred to urology. Sperm cryopreservation via open gonadal biopsy, testicular tissue cryopreservation (TTC), and semen sample (when age/maturity-appropriate) were discussed. Though requiring surgery, biopsy/TTC relieves patients of the psychological impact of semen sample production. Under IRB approval, 15 patients (median age 12 years, range 10-16 years) underwent TTC (Fig. 1). One patient (aged years) opted for semen sample. All patients had success with spermatogonial stem cells cryopreserved for future patient use. With more individuals beginning medical and surgical therapy at a younger age, fertility preservation discussions are essential but often overlooked, depriving these individuals the joy of becoming a biological parent. Background: Postpartum hospital care and individualized discharge preparedness should be part of person-focused health services. Yet, there are limited descriptions of birthing parents' experiences to identify clinical practice strengths and opportunities to improve systems of care. Objective: To explore birthing parents' perspectives on supportive healthcare practices and areas for improvement around postpartum hospital discharge. Methods: In this mixed-methods study, participants completed an online questionnaire and a semistructured, telephone interview at 2 to 3 weeks postpartum. Researchers summarized responses to 2 quantitative questions and conducted a thematic content analysis of interview data. Results: Forty birthing parents participated (90% non-White). According to quantitative responses, most birthing parents were prepared to be discharged (82.5%). Responses to the interview generated 6 broad factors related to postpartum hospital discharge preparedness: inpatient postpartum support, physical and emotional health, patient priorities and agency, clear and relevant information, holistic care, and scheduling and continuity of care. Researchers further identified themes around specific healthcare practices participants described to be supportive and opportunities for improvement. Conclusion: Birthing parents articulated multiple contributors to their preparation for postpartum hospital discharge. Infant adoption is an association that occurs between an adult individual and a dependent infant and occurs most often when lactating females care for a nutritionally dependent infant that is not her offspring. Adult females are often involved in adoption; while, direct infant care by males occurs in less than 5% of all mammalian species. We report the first record of adoption by wild male adults of Alouatta caraya, a platyrrhine primate species that does not typically participate in parental care. We observed two independent cases of adoption, in two different groups (G1, G2) at the Corrientes Biological Station, Argentina. After the death of two adult females with dependent infants, one adult male adopted an orphan in each group. We recorded the activity of the adoptive males and the two infants. During this period, adoptive males expressed parental care behaviors toward infants. However, after 38 days in G1 and 53 days in G2, both infants died. Based on our continuous monitoring of study groups, we suggest that adoptive males are the biological parents of the orphaned infants. As such, kin selection may explain the care of the infants. However, another explanation could be group familiarity, which refers to the social bonds and cohesion that develop among individuals within a group, even if they are not genetically related. An adult male, although not genetically related to the infants, may take care of them due to the cohesion and relationships established within the group during his period of residence. Background: Pure partial trisomy 16q12.1q22.1 is a rare chromosome copy number variant (CNV). The primary clinical phenotypes associated with this syndrome include abnormal facial morphology, global developmental delay (GDD), short stature, and reported predisposing factors for atypical behavior, autism, the development of learning disabilities, and neuropsychiatric disorders. The dosage-sensitive genes associated with partial trisomy are not disclosed preventing to establish a genotype-phenotype correlation. Methods: We report a case of a Chinese patient diagnosed with GDD and an abnormal facial shape, who was found to have partial trisomy 16 through karyotyping and high-throughput sequencing analysis. Karyotype and CNV tracing analyses were also conducted on the biological parents of the patient to assess for any chromosomal structural abnormalities. Additionally, we included 29 patients with pure partial trisomy 16q, reported in the DECIPHER database and the literature. We and performed a genotype-phenotype correlation analysis. Results: The proband, a 2-year-old female, was found to have a de novo 21.96 Mb duplication located between 16q12.1q22.1, with no other deletions observed on other chromosomes, indicating a pure partial trisomy of 16q. Through genotype and phenotype analysis of 29 individuals, we found that patients with the duplicated region located at the distal region of 16q may exhibit more severe symptoms than those with duplication at the proximal region; however, no relationship was identified between phenotype and the size of the duplicated segment. Conclusion: We report, for the first time, a patient with partial trisomy 16q validated by multiple genetic tests, including CNV-seq, whole exome sequencing (WES), and karyotyping. It is speculated that partial trisomy of 16q may be associated with continuous gene duplication. Background: Respectful, equitable, and supportive health care team interactions with patients and their companions are a key part of quality health care services. Despite the importance of communication and other aspects of engagement during inpatient postpartum care, little is known about how care is experienced during this period from families' perspectives. Methods: This study collected video and audio data with 15 birthing families (n = 9 English-speaking and n = 6 Spanish-speaking) and their health care team members during inpatient postpartum care in a southeastern United States academic medical center. This analysis quantifies health care team member presence in family hospital rooms, assesses linguistic appropriateness of health care team member verbal communication, and describes birthing parent and companion verbal reactions to health care team member interactions. A behavioral taxonomy was applied to identify these codes in the 12 h prior to hospital discharge. Additionally, we transcribed the birthing parent and companion verbal reactions for 10-minutes each time the health care team member departed their room. This content was inductively coded to identify topics and develop themes. Results: A total of 160 h of video and audio data were coded across 15 participating families for this analysis. There were 19.9 h of missing data in the 12 h prior to hospital discharge due to equipment being turned off across five participants. At least one health care team member was present in the postnatal unit rooms within the observation period in 200 instances (median 13 times, range 5 to 19 times per participating family). Communication with Spanish-speaking birthing parents was linguistically appropriate for between 20.0% and 75.0% of interactions. Following health care team member presence, birthing parent and companion reactions were indeterminate 1 time, no verbal reaction 107 times, positive 25 times, confused 38 times, and negative 52 times. Many parents expressed more than one reaction. Reaction topics included clarity of information provided, postpartum pain management, hospital discharge coordination, health care team member conduct, and access to supplies. Conclusion: There are strengths in postpartum patient engagement as well as areas for health care team improvement. More appropriate communication including setting of clearer expectations surrounding various aspects of services on the postnatal unit may improve patient experiences. As a part of this improved quality of inpatient postpartum care, consistent utilization of interpretation services could decrease patient confusion, enable shared decision-making, and promote positive patient-provider relationships. Parents have reported increased symptoms of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluated changes in mental health and addiction (MHA)-related health service use among mothers and other birthing parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a repeated cross-sectional study using health administrative data in Ontario, Canada. The population included all mothers and birthing parents (≥1 child aged 1–18, no children <1 to exclude postpartum parents) between January 2016 and December 2021. We compared rates of MHA-related outpatient physician visits, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits during COVID-19 (March 2020–December 2021) to pre-COVID-19 (pre-March 2020). MHA-related outpatient visit rates increased by 17 % (rate ratio (RR) 1.17, 95 % CI 1.16–1.18) during COVID-19. Monthly utilization rates remained higher than expected across the COVID-19 period. MHA-related ED visit rates remained lower than expected during COVID-19, while MHA-related hospitalization rates returned to expected levels by August 2020. The largest relative increases in MHA-related outpatient visits during COVID-19 were in mothers and other birthing parents living in higher income (RR 1.20, 95 % CI 1.19–1.22) or urban areas (RR 1.20, 95 % CI 1.18–1.21), with children aged 1–3 years (RR 1.23, 95 % CI 1.20–1.25) and with no history of MHA-related health service use (RR 1.20, 95 % CI 1.19–1.21). This study only captured physician-delivered MHA-related health service use. The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increase in MHA-related outpatient visits among mothers and other birthing parents. Māori are the Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, New Zealand, and, similar to other Indigenous populations, face significant health inequities. Of concern, Māori mothers and birthing parents experience persistent and grave mental health inequities within the perinatal period relative to other ethnic groups. Indigenous research participants who have mental illness and who are also pregnant or in the early stages of parenting present intersecting ethical dilemmas for researchers working with research participants in situations of vulnerability. Given the known historical harms that culturally unsafe research has previously caused Indigenous peoples, it is crucial that research approaches with Indigenous mothers and birthing parents who have experienced mental illness are culturally safe and ethically sound. Kaupapa Māori research provides a framework to decolonise research processes and create the conditions for the cultural safety of the researcher and research participants. Kaupapa Māori research is grounded in a philosophy of relationship and a mutual recognition of the mana (dignity, prestige) of both researcher and participant. Engaging in culturally safe and responsive research with Māori can address power imbalances and ensure that the priorities of Māori communities are centred within the research. This paper details the application of a Kaupapa Māori research methodology used within qualitative research with Māori mothers and birthing parents experiencing perinatal mental illness and is structured in three parts. The first section situates Kaupapa Māori methodology in relation to the context of Māori mothers and birthing parents experiencing perinatal mental illness, providing a rationale for the research. The second section describes the application of Kaupapa Māori methodology within the research project. ABSTRACT This empirical study in the jurisdiction of New South Wales, Australia, explores the complex and unenviable processes legal actors undertake when making decisions about removing infants from their birth parents. Professionals from legal, statutory child protection and health contexts were interviewed regarding their experiences and perspectives about legal decision‐making practices when placing infants in out‐of‐home care (OOHC). Informed by vulnerability theory, analysis of the interview data found that government apparatuses designed to protect vulnerable infants can sometimes have the paradoxical effect of increasing overall infant vulnerability. Findings suggest a need for wider‐ranging research regarding how international and domestic law might be improved to better recognize the unique developmental status and vulnerabilities of infants in the child protection system. Parents who have been exposed to trauma face distinct challenges in parenting that can lead to negative child developmental outcomes and intergenerational transmission of trauma. Parenting programs for traumatized parents seem promising, but the existing evidence on their effectiveness has not yet been synthesized. This study aimed to examine the overall effect of trauma-informed parenting programs on (a) parenting and (b) parental mental health outcomes by conducting two three-level meta-analyses. Moderator analyses were performed to identify whether program components, delivery techniques, and other study and program characteristics were associated with effectiveness. A literature search conducted up to August 2024 yielded 15 studies reporting on 110 effect sizes. Significant overall effects were found of trauma-informed parenting programs on both parenting outcomes (d = 0.75, 95% CIs = [0.09, 1.15], p =.027) and parental mental health outcomes (d = 0.21, 95% CIs = [0.09, 0.32], p <.001). The first meta-analysis on parenting found no significant moderators, while the second meta-analysis on parental mental health indicated that programs emphasizing child disciplining skills yielded smaller effects (d = 0.04) compared to programs without this component (d = 0.31). Programs using modeling techniques yielded larger effects (d = 0.32) compared to programs without (d = 0.14). Larger program effects on parental mental health were also found for programs with longer durations and when individual sessions were used. Engagement in Early Intervention (EI) and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) helps to support the development of very young children who might demonstrate delays or other challenges. Research documents underutilization of these essential childhood services. To understand how to increase engagement in EI and ECSE among eligible families, research is needed to identify barriers and facilitators associated with enrollment. The current study examined the relation between proposed barriers and service access outcomes (i.e., child age of delay identification, age at service provision, total number of EI/ECSE hours, and the total types of EI/ECSE services) reported by parents of birth to six-year olds (n = 60). Results revealed higher parent advocacy was significantly related to a younger age of service enrollment and a larger total number of intervention types used. Development and Psychopathology has been a premier resource for understanding stressful childhood experiences and the intergenerational continuity of psychopathology. Building on that tradition, we examined the unique and joint influences of maternal stress on children's effortful control (age 7) and externalizing behavior (age 11) as transmitted via genetics, the prenatal environment, and the postnatal environment. The sample included N = 561 adopted children and their biological and adoptive parents. Path models identified a direct effect of biological mother life stress on children's effortful control (β = −.08) and an indirect effect of her life stress on child externalizing behavior via effortful control (β =.52), but no main or indirect effects of biological parent psychopathology, prenatal stress, or adoptive mother adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Adoptive mother ACES amplified the association between biological mother life stress and child effortful control (β = −.08), externalizing behavior (β = 1.41), and the indirect effect via effortful control, strengthening associations when adoptive mothers reported average or high ACES during their own childhoods. Results suggest that novel study designs are needed to enhance the understanding of how life stress gets "under the skin" to affect psychopathology in the offspring of adults who have experienced stress. Objective: Mother Baby Units provide mental health care to parents experiencing severe perinatal mental illness. The majority of admitted parents identify as mothers and are the birthing parent and primary caregiver for their infants. However, there is increasing recognition of transgender and gender diverse people who birth and parent infants, as well as awareness of the mental health needs of fathers, people in same-sex relationships, and other non-birthing parents. As such there are moves to use ungendered language for health services including renaming these units as Parent Baby Units. This paper explores this debate, critically reflecting on emergent tensions. Conclusion: Movements towards, and resistance against, changing language in perinatal mental health care are attempts to ensure the visibility of groups within mainstream services. This study included implementation of a half diallel crosses among ten genotypes of durum wheat in 2020-2021. The next growing season 2021-2022, first generation and the parents have been planted at the Agricultural Research Station of Koya/ Erbil by using Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The grain yield trait and its components were studied. General combining ability (G.C.A.) and specific combining ability (S.C.A.) and gene effects were estimated. The results revealed that parent (9) had desirable and high G.C.A. effects for all traits except of plant-height, while the cross (8×10) showed desirable S.C.A. effects for all traits. The additive variance (σ²A) was higher than dominant (σ²D) for the plant-height and number of grains/ spike. And the dominant variance was higher for the rest traits. High values of heritability in both broad sense (H2 b.s.) and narrow sense (H2 n.s.) were recorded for plant-height and number of grains/ spike. Average degree of dominance was greater than one for flag-leaf area, number of spikes/plant, 1000 grain weight and grain yield/plant. This article focuses on Israeli single gay fathers' reproductive choices. Thematic analysis of 13 in-depth semi-structured interviews with Israeli single gay fathers yielded two themes related to their reproductive choice. The first theme pertains to their decision to become single fathers. Three dimensions were prominent in the participants' decision to pursue lone parenthood: the choice to fulfill parenthood as gay men; the choice to separate parenthood from couplehood; and the view of single parenthood as empowerment. The second theme pertained to the fathers' decision to use surrogacy, which was influenced by three key factors: the desire to parent a biological child, the desire for exclusive fatherhood, and the perceived advantages of surrogacy for single fathers. The findings indicate that the fathers narrated their reproductive experiences in terms of choice and autonomy, while negotiating with dominant concepts of parenthood as a two-parent, heteronormative and biogenetic phenomenon. These men referred to the challenge they posed to some of these concepts and the social barriers they encountered as factors that facilitated their coping skills in lone parenthood, thereby enhancing their agency. This research discusses how the 20th century was marked by eugenic policies that influenced decision-making regarding the control of leprosy and, particularly, the fate of the "healthy" children of patients living in isolation at the Santo Antônio do Prata Leprosarium, located in the rural area of Igarapé-Açu, Pará, Brazil. The children of leprosy patients were segregated from their parents at birth and cared for by others. This family separation was a prophylactic attempt to prevent the transmission of the disease from parents to children, as parents were not prohibited from reproducing. However, allowing children to remain with their parents posed significant risks to the cycle of contagion that authorities sought to combat during that period. Thus, this research undertakes a bibliographic analysis of documents from that time--primarily Lazarópolis do Prata by Heraclides de Souza Araújo, which provides a detailed depiction of how leprosy was perceived as a societal threat. Contemporary bibliographies, such as Del Cont, (2008), Louzada (1942), Pacheco (2018), and Souza (2006), are also utilized, along with a qualitative approach, to deepen the discussion on the relationship between prophylaxis and the segregation of these children into spaces designed to break the disease's transmission cycle. In the last decade, there has been an increased focus on child protection cases in the European Court of Human Rights. The heightened attention on child protection underscores the actuality of children's rights, rendering it an interesting area for researchers in fields such as children's rights, child protection, or international relations. All judgments from the Court are public. Research on social media data has shown that public data is not necessarily intended for the public. Moreover, in child protection cases, the child is rarely a part of the case. It is the biological parents against the domestic authorities. Nevertheless, the situation the case revolves around includes the child, making the child an indirect part of the judgment. There is little research on the ethical considerations of indirectly involving children in research on court judgments. However, there is abundant research on ethical considerations in researching public data, specifically social media data. By drawing on research on ethical considerations in the use of social media data, this article delves into the ethical consequences of including children indirectly in research. Violent crimes and domestic violence are notoriously high in South Africa, which leaves many children defenceless to struggle with emotions such as loneliness and sadness. The healthy development and socialisation of children can be difficult in a society characterised by domestic tribulations, poverty, crime, single-parent homes, and absent parents. In South Africa, children often do not co-reside with their biological parents, mainly due to labour migration and low marital rates. Divorce and long working hours for parents also contribute to limited family interaction. Many children are raised by grandparents or older siblings and relatives, especially in rural areas. Due to these and other factors, children experience poor parental attachment, loss, sadness and loneliness, which impact their general well-being. These correlator factors often contribute to weak outer and inner containment, which are essential for a young person to develop sustained lawabiding behaviour. Being sad and lonely often prompts issues such as delinquency, violence, insecurity, insufficient self-control, and bullying. Reckless' containment theory shows that these behaviours often stem from the absence of the inner and outer controls that are necessary for the development of normative behaviour. Healthy bonding with and attachment to significant others are also important to the development of normative behaviour. In this contribution, the findings from a study conducted in Limpopo, South Africa, are discussed. The qualitative research study involved asking 373 children, between the ages of eight and nine years, to draw and narrate what made them sad. The researchers wanted to determine the specific challenges that young South African children face. In line with the interpretivist paradigm, it was also important to determine what these children regarded as sad and challenging situations, to understand their unique perspectives and life worlds. The study was therefore guided by the research question: What challenges do young South African children face in their daily lives? Findings revealed that exposure to bullying, loss, inadequate attachment, and crime can cause the development of weak inner and outer containment, which might lead to future misbehaviour, poor self-control, incorrigible actions, and bullying behaviour. Many Americans believe that a breakdown in the "traditional" two‐married‐parent family and the rise in single‐parent families are responsible for persistent family inequality. The general argument is that children do best when they are raised by both biological parents. Evidence increasingly calls into question conventional wisdom about the universal benefits of the two‐parent family, yet mainstream approaches to studying family structure continue to reinforce oversimplistic interpretations of the impact of family structure on well‐being. In this article, we reconsider long‐standing assumptions about the superiority of the heteropatriarchal two‐married‐parent family using historical and contemporary evidence to offset the stagnant theorizing in the study of family structure. We argue that, in pursuit of better science, family researchers must commit to theoretical approaches that move us beyond conventional perspectives of families toward critical perspectives that guide more nuanced, holistic, and contextualized analyses of how family structure actually operates in people's lives. Objectives: We evaluated associations between changes in dental anxiety and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in parents of the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study. Methods: Two-year dental anxiety trajectories measured with Modified Dental Anxiety Scale from gestational weeks (gw) 14 and 34, and 3 and 24 months after birth were used. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Health Impact Profile 14-item questionnaire at gw34 and 4 years. Changes in the OHRQoL sum and dimension scores according to dental anxiety trajectories were analyzed with the Jonckheere–Terpstra test separately for mothers (n = 998) and fathers (n = 513). Results: Overall, OHRQoL decreased in all dental anxiety trajectory groups except the High decreasing group in mothers and in fathers. The decline in the overall OHRQoL was greatest in the Stable high trajectory group for both parents. In fathers, OHRQoL increased considerably but not statistically significantly in the High decreasing trajectory group. The changes in OHRQoL dimensions Psychological discomfort and Handicap differed according to dental anxiety trajectories for both of mothers and fathers, and also for the dimension Psychological disability for mothers. Conclusions: These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions in treating high dental anxiety and in preventing the increase in dental anxiety to improve oral health outcomes such as OHRQoL. Aim Method Results Interpretation To explore parents' experiences of early screening for cerebral palsy (CP) in three Australian states.This is a qualitative description study using semi‐structured interviews. Participants were parents of children who had CP (n = 5), or high risk of CP (n = 10), or no CP (n = 11) at 2 years, and had completed early screening for CP. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.Three themes describe parents' experiences of early screening. (1) ‘A new, destabilized world’ explores how parents are thrown into an unexpected parenting pathway with the birth of an infant at high risk of having developmental challenges. (2) ‘Early is best … but not easy’ explores parents' desire for information, screening, and developmental support, to be delivered as early as possible, even when this was experienced as emotionally challenging. (3) ‘Trying to reach stable ground’ describes the resources and actions parents used to move forward and reach a place of stability and control. These included access to knowledge, proactive ‘next steps’, and supportive relationships with health‐care professionals.Parents valued and desired early information and support for their child regardless of a diagnosis of CP. Modern cultural evolution theory adopts a variety of concepts and methods developed in mathematical biology, in particular population genetics theory. In addition to forward-looking approaches such as two-locus models, backward-looking approaches such as coalescent theory, which describe ancestral states of the current population, have played an important role in population genetics. Here, we show how forward and backward approaches can be applied to two examples in cultural evolution. The first example deals with the number of cultural traits, which can be analyzed by a backward approach. Cultural coalescent theory illustrates many unique aspects of cultural processes such as information transfer (i.e., social learning) from many donors (“cultural parents”), including or excluding the biological parents. Theory predicts that many cultural traits of intermediate (or higher) frequency (popularity) can exist that are surprisingly old. Many unsolved issues remain, however, such as how to incorporate social structure as well as natural and/or cultural selection, which we believe to be an urgent agenda. The second example is the punishment of sibling incest, a problem to which cultural coalescent theory cannot currently be usefully applied. By analyzing forward recursions, we show that punishment is ineffective in suppressing incest, unless the incestuous inclination is diminished by the presence of punishers. When children are placed into foster care, they experience separations from their primary attachment figures. Visitations are often arranged to provide ongoing birth parent-child contact. These visitations are complicated, though, because young children typically show a range of confusing behaviors when reunited. Fostering Relationships is a brief intervention designed to enhance visitation for the child, birth parent, and foster parent. We examined the effectiveness of the Fostering Relationships intervention through single subject analyses. We examined whether birth parents followed their child’s lead during visitation sessions significantly more than they did not follow their child’s lead. Six of seven birth parents who received the Fostering Relationships intervention followed their child’s lead significantly more often than not, whereas only one of four of the control parents did so. ABSTRACT Introduction Methods Results Conclusions Research on parenting stress in adoptive parents during the early years post‐placement reveals significant variability, yet few studies examine both parent‐ and child‐related factors. This study investigates the role of the personality dimension of self‐criticism and perceived negative child emotionality in relation to parenting stress during the first four years after transnational adoption. Additionally, it explores the moderating effect of child age at placement, a key factor associated with early adversity.Drawing upon a longitudinal five‐wave dataset in the first 4 years after the child arrived in the adoptive family, this study used multi‐informant data of 96 adoptive mothers and fathers of transnationally adopted children (mean child age at placement = 13.48 months). Data were analyzed using a multilevel structural equation modeling approach.Parents' self‐criticism was positively associated with parenting stress at the between‐parent level. At the within‐parent level, year‐to‐year fluctuations in both parents' self‐criticism and perceived child's negative emotionality were positively associated with corresponding fluctuations in parenting stress. Child age at placement did not moderate any of these associations.Overall, this study yielded convincing evidence for the dynamic nature of parenting stress in the first years after child placement, the role of parental self‐criticism, and the child's perceived negative emotionality herein. Birth complications add additional stress on lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (LBTQ) parents, as they also must navigate hetero- and cisnormative assumptions, being subject to othering, and negative attitudes from healthcare staff.To explore LBTQ parents’ experiences of bonding with their child following a complicated birth.Semi-structured interviews with 22 birthing and non-birthing parents. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis.The results describe obstructive and facilitating factors. Being traumatised was the main obstacle for mentally engaging with the baby. A focus on physical injuries and healing hindered caretaking and bonding for birthing parents. Stress related to their parental role was obstructive for some non-birthing parents, who struggled to find space to process their own experiences when the partner and/or child was not well. Other non-birthing parents experienced a head start in the bonding process when their partner was injured. Some birthing parents had positive bonding experiences despite the birth complications, as they felt an alliance with their child in the harsh situation.Complicated births and minority stressors can increase the risk of bonding difficulties and mental ill-health. Introduction: Parental suicide attempts and suicide death increase suicide risk in their offspring. High levels of impulsivity have been observed in families at high risk for suicide. Impulsivity, a highly heritable trait that is especially elevated in childhood, is frequently measured with the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, which includes negative urgency, positive urgency, sensation seeking, premeditation, and perseverance. Our study examined the association between the UPPS-P facets and suicide ideation (without suicide attempts) and suicide attempts at baseline and first-time endorsement within the next two years in childhood. We also examined how the UPPS-P facets mediated the association between parental suicide attempts and suicide death and offspring first-time suicide ideation and attempts at follow-up. Methods: The sample was 9,194 children (48.4% female; 9-10 years old) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, assessed yearly three times. At Time 1 (T1), caregivers reported on suicide attempts and suicide deaths (combined) of the biological parents. Caregivers and children reported on suicide ideation and attempts in the KSADS-PL DSM-5 at each time point, T1 and follow-up (T2 and/or T3). The Short UPPS-P Scale (child-report) assessed the impulsivity facets at T1, which were computed as latent variables. Results: At T1, 6.7% of children had a parent who had attempted or died by suicide. Most UPPS-P facets were associated with suicide ideation and attempts at T1 and T2/T3. In adjusted models, parental suicide attempts and suicide death were associated with offspring negative and positive urgency. In mediation models, parental suicide attempts and suicide death had an indirect effect on offspring first-time suicide ideation at T2/T3 through negative urgency (OR = 1.04; 95% CI, 1.01-1.08) and positive urgency (OR = 1.03, 95% CI, 1.01-1.05). Similar results were found for first-time suicide attempts at T2/T3. Discussion: Our findings support an impulsive pathway in the familial transmission of suicide risk. For all youth, interventions that target multiple UPPS-P facets may help prevent or reduce suicide risk. For offspring whose parents have attempted or died by suicide, clinicians should pay particular attention to children who impulsively act on extreme emotions, as they may be at higher suicide risk. Parental choice remains a central theme in education policy in England. Parents have the right to choose how their children are educated. For some families this choice is surrendered, with volition and intention, to their local authority which allocates school places after parents, statutory guardians and families have made their decisions. Where applicable, after parents have selected mainstream education for children with SEND, their child might be evaluated, and a recommendation made for their child to undergo a managed move; typically to join a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) or Alternative Provision (AP). In this think piece, we advocate for PRUs and APs to sit alongside mainstream and special education schools to offer a more balanced first choice for parents. This means PRUs and APs are not 'othered' in this choice offer for parents. There are academic, psycho‐social, emotional, well‐being and self‐affirming complexities which could, and quite frankly, tend to result in the pupils and students accessing settings such as these which appear to be othered in this way. Feeling loved by one's parents is critical for children's health and well‐being. How can such feelings be fostered? A vital feature of loving interactions is reciprocal self‐disclosure, where individuals disclose intimate information about themselves. In a proof‐of‐concept experiment, we examined whether encouraging reciprocal self‐disclosure in parent‐child dyads would make children feel more loved during the conversation. Participants were 218 children (ages 8–13, 50% girls, 94% Dutch) and one of their parents (ages 28–56, 62% women, 90% Dutch). Parent‐child dyads received a list of 14 questions and took turns asking them each other for 9 min. Dyads were assigned randomly to engage in self‐disclosure (questions invoking escalated intimacy) or small talk (questions invoking minimal intimacy). Before and after, children reported how loved they felt by their parent during the conversation. Self‐disclosure made children feel more loved during the conversation than did small talk. Compared to small talk, self‐disclosure did not instigate conversations that were lengthier or more positive; rather, it instigated conversations that were more emotionally charged (reflecting anger, anxiety, and sadness), social (discussing family and friends), reflective (creating insight), and meaningful (addressing deeply personal topics, including the passing of loved ones). The dyad's gender composition did not significantly moderate these effects. Our research suggests that reciprocal self‐disclosure can make children feel more loved in the moment, uncovers linguistic signatures of reciprocal self‐disclosure, and offers developmental scientists a tool to examine causal effects of reciprocal self‐disclosure in parent‐child dyads. This study examined gene–environment correlation (rGE) in intellectual and academic development in 561 U.S.‐based adoptees (57% male; 56% non‐Latinx White, 19% multiracial, 13% Black or African American, 11% Latinx) and their birth and adoptive parents between 2003 and 2017. Birth mother intellectual and academic performance predicted adoptive mother warmth at child age 6 (β =.14, p =.038) and 7 (β =.12, p =.040) but not 4.5 years, and adoptive father warmth at 7 (β =.18, p =.007) but not 4.5 or 6 years. These rGE effects were not mediated by children's language. Contrary to theory that rGE accounts for increasing heritability of intellectual ability, parenting did not mediate genetic effects on children's language or academic performance. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to one in five mothers and birthing parents, yet just 10% receive evidence‐based care. This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine if a synchronous online 9‐week group cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention delivered by mothers who have recovered from postpartum depression (i.e., peers) could effectively improve PPD and its comorbidities. Methods: Participants (n = 183) in this study lived in Ontario, Canada, were ≥18 years‐old, had an infant <12 months, were fluent in English, and scored ≥10 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). They were randomized to experimental (received intervention plus treatment as usual (TAU)) or waitlist control (TAU plus the intervention after a 9‐week wait) groups. Depression, anxiety, social support, mother‐infant bonding, and infant temperament were assessed at baseline and 9 weeks later. Outcomes were assessed in the experimental group 3 months post‐intervention to assess stability. Results: Statistically significant reductions were observed in EPDS (B = 5.99; p < 0.001; d = 1.32) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire‐7 scores (B = 5.94; p < 0.001; d = 1.22), improvements that remained stable 3 months post‐intervention in the experimental group. Maternal social support (p = 0.02; d = 0.40), infant‐focused anxiety (p = 0.02; d = 0.54), and infant negative emotionality (p < 0.01; d = 0.23) also improved post‐intervention and remained stable 3 months later. Conclusion: Online peer‐delivered group CBT for PPD can effectively treat PPD and anxiety, and improve social support, infant‐focused anxiety, and negative emotionality in infants. • AVs can be a suitable mobility option for unaccompanied child transportation for a majority of parents in our study. • Parents wanted to train their children and gain first-hand experience with the autoELF vehicle before allowing them to use the autoELF vehicle unaccompanied. • Parents would like to replace most of the previously accompanied car journeys to the children's leisure activities with the autoELF vehicle. • Only two parents cited school commuting as a use case for the autoELF vehicle and AVs in general. • Parents cited self-responsibility and the ability to regulate emotions as the two most important skills for children to be able to use the autoELF vehicle unaccompanied. Driverless or autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to address children's mobility disadvantage by enabling them to become more independent from their parents and other adult drivers before they reach the legal age for obtaining a driver's license. In an online contextual interview study, we interviewed N =22 parents of underage children from Germany to investigate their willingness to use AVs for unaccompanied transportation of their children. The goal of the interview study was to investigate whether AVs are a suitable option to support unaccompanied transportation of children from the parents' perspective and how these AVs should be designed considering the parents' concerns and needs. In contrast to former acceptance studies, we familiarized the participants with an existing AV concept called autoELF. We created a user scenario to enable the parents to better imagine the situation. In the study, parents first described their children's current mobility in a normal week. Parents were then asked about the expected benefits, concerns, child-related prerequisites and technical requirements for using AVs, as well as the possibilities for integrating AVs into their family's mobility. Results showed that AVs can be a solution to provide children with unaccompanied transportation. In contrast to previous studies, the majority of parents interviewed in this study were willing to use the AV for the transportation of unaccompanied children, but only after parents had gained initial experience with the vehicle and trained their children in its use. Regarding the unaccompanied use by their children, parents based their consent to use the AV on their children's emotional and cognitive abilities rather than on their age. In their children's daily mobility, parents intended to replace most of the previously accompanied car journeys during leisure time with the autoELF vehicle without compromising their children's active mobility, such as walking or bicycling. In contrast to previous literature, only a few parents cited school commuting as a use case for the autoELF vehicle. Our qualitative interview study highlights the potential of AVs for unaccompanied child transportation. Moreover, it stresses the importance to use specific, tangible concept when investigating family AVs. Individuals with a family history of alcohol or other substance use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing alcohol and other substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) compared to individuals with no such family histories (FH−). FH+ young adults have blunted stress reactivity, lower cognitive performance and altered frontal white matter microstructure compared to FH− controls. We hypothesized that family history of AUD/SUD disrupts neuroendocrine regulation of the immune system in FH+ individuals, resulting in altered blood immune cell composition, inflammation and neurocognitive alterations that, ultimately, increases risk for AUD/SUD and associated psychopathology. We examined white blood cell (WBC) parameters derived from complete blood counts in FH+ (n = 37) and FH− (n = 77) young adults without AUD/SUD to test if immune system dysregulation is present in FH+ individuals. The total WBC count, number of neutrophils and number of monocytes and associated systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) were significantly increased in the FH+ group. Further, WBC, neutrophil, monocyte counts and SIRI values were all positively correlated with FH density (number of biological parents and grandparents with AUD/SUD). These novel data are the first to identify an association between family history of AUD/SUD and increased circulating leukocytes, which is likely indicative of immune dysregulation in FH+ young adults prior to onset of AUD/SUD. Additional studies are warranted to characterize the functional relevance of the observed immune cell composition in FH+ individuals, but the notion that inexpensive and widely available blood tests may help identify addiction risk could be transformative. Introduction: Toddlers are vulnerable to injury. In this phase, toddlers are curious and enjoy exploring the environment, but their understanding and ability to react to danger are limited. Toddlers are active and start to enjoy playing outside. They develop fine motor skills and begin to grasp, open doors, or throw objects around. This study aims to identify factors associated with the risk of injury in toddlers. Materials and methods: Descriptive quantitative research type with a cross-sectional approach. The research location was at Posyandu Sukajaya, Rajabasa Jaya Village, Lampung - Indonesia. Respondents were 30 parents of toddlers selected using a Simple random sampling technique. Respondent inclusion criteria: biological parents and owning a private house. Data collection using the interview method using a questionnaire. In this study, univariate data analysis using frequency distribution. Bivariate analysis to determine factors associated with injury risk in toddlers using Chi-square. Results: Characteristics of toddlers: Gender: Boys 14 (46.6%), Girls 16 (53.4%). The incidence of injury to children under five was 16 (53.3%), types of injury: Falls 12 (40%), injuries 3 (10%), burns 3 (10%). Child Growth and Development Status: Normal 25 (83.3%) and Growth and Development Disorders (16.7%). Mother's knowledge about injury risk: 70% good and 30% poor. There is a significant relationship between gender (p-value 0.010) and maternal knowledge (0.001) with the risk of injury to toddlers. There is no significant relationship between a child's growth and development status and the risk of injury to toddlers (p-value: 0.513). Conclusion: Nurses should provide anticipatory guidance and assistance to families to prevent the risk of injury to toddlers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Creating a new family unit can be challenging for biological parents and stepparents as roles and responsabilities need to be redefined for each member. Recognized as a key component for families, coparenting was rarely investigated in stepfamily. The aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of coparenting in the link between parenting and stepparenting role difficulties and the child's adjustment. 57 stepcouples filled out questionnaires about the difficulties in parenting or stepparenting roles, coparenting relationships, and the children's adjustment. We used a moderating model to understand the effect of coparenting on the links between these variables. Results showed that coparenting integrity moderated the link between parenting role difficulties and children's difficulties, but no significant results were found for coparenting conflict or for stepparents. These findings highlight the importance of parental behaviors regarding coparenting integrity and their effect on the child's adjustment, in stepfamilies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Studies on demography, reproductive traits, and genetic diversity in Charolais cattle are scarce in Ecuador. The evolution of the population structure, reproductive performance, inbreeding, and diversity loss were analyzed through official pedigree records based on the two types of existing herd books in Ecuadorian Charolais cattle as part of a model for application in other cattle breeds. The results from our study showed that the application of different breeding methods using genetically top-rated individuals influenced the inbreeding rates and genetic diversity loss over time, which could be minimized using foreign genetic resources in the current Ecuadorian Charolais cattle population. The objective was to evaluate the evolution of the population structure, reproductive performance, inbreeding, and genetic diversity in Charolais cattle. Official genealogical information from the Ecuadorian Charolais Association was divided into five populations: (a) historical (total), (b) 2008–2012 (natural mating period), (c) 2013–2017 (natural mating + artificial insemination period), (d) 2018–2022 (artificial insemination + embryo transfer period), and (e) the reference (known sires and dams) from which the population structure was evaluated using pedigree completeness and the generation interval (GI). Meanwhile, for genetic diversity (GD), inbreeding (F), average relatedness (AR), and the effective population size (Ne) were estimated. The gene origin probability (number of founders, effective number of founders/ancestors, and number of founder genomes) explaining genetic variability, reproductive efficiency, the number of offspring per sire and dam, and the average ages of parents at the birth of their offspring were determined. The database was analyzed using the ENDOG, POPREP, and CFC software programs. The results indicate that pedigree completeness and the GI decreased over time among populations, although the first generation showed higher values. The sire gametic pathway was greater in all populations. F increased over time, although not markedly. Although Ne variations were observed, the levels remained above the recommended limit value. The GD loss increased progressively over time although the most recent population was not significantly affected. Finally, the female reproductive efficiency increased over time as well. In conclusion, the Charolais cattle GI should be reduced. After 2012, the use of Assisted Reproductive Technologies and breeding schemes raised the GD loss. Congenital syphilis is a re-emerging infectious threat in areas of North America. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively describe the rate of decline of nontreponemal (rapid plasma reagin, RPR) titers in pregnant persons with syphilis and their infants. In a retrospective review, we included 120 pregnant persons with 563 reactive RPR measurements (median 5, range 2 to 11 per person) and 35 infants with 81 RPR measurements (median 2, range 2 to 6 per infant). First-order decay, second-order decay, and a mathematical model representing functional FcRn-mediated antibody recycling were fitted to individual patient RPR trajectories. The RPR titers decreased with a median half-life of 39 days (IQR 28–59) and 27 days (IQR 17–41) in birthing parents and infants, respectively. The half-life varied with the initial RPR titer, suggesting that the kinetics of RPR decline was not first-order. A mathematical model accounting for saturable antibody recycling explained the longevity of RPR reactivity, predicted the observed non-linear kinetics, and fit the empiric data well. In summary, RPR titers decline with a half-life of roughly one month; however, the elimination does not follow first-order kinetics. Saturable antibody recycling may explain the prolonged and non-linear elimination of nontreponemal antibodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mining activity is an important source of heavy metals in agricultural soils, threatening food safety and human health. In the present study, an integrated approach of Nemerow pollution index (PN), Geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (PERI), principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to comprehensively illustrate the pollution, potential ecological risk, and sources of heavy metals in agricultural soils surrounding a legacy Pb-Zn mine. The agricultural soils were seriously polluted and suffered high risks of heavy metals with the order of Cd > Pb > Hg > As > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr. According to the PMF model, Cd (85.5%) and Zn (15.9%) originated from irrigation of polluted water. As (76.2%) and Pb (26.4%) were related to Pb/Zn ores transportation. Pb (52.5%), Zn (51.1%), and Cu (38.8%) were associated with atmospheric deposition during Pb-Zn mining. Hg (67.3%) was mainly from agricultural sources. Cr (59.5%), Ni (59%), and Cu (28.7%) came from the natural parent materials. Pb-Zn mining activity was the priority source accounting for 57.7% of heavy metals pollution in the agricultural soil. Additionally, agricultural and natural sources contributed 19.8% and 22.5%, respectively. These results provide valuable information for future prevention, remediation, and management of soil heavy metals pollution surrounding the Pb-Zn mining region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Perceived social support plays a crucial role in adolescent development, health, well-being, and resilience. Understanding the factors associated with perceived social support among adolescents is essential for designing effective interventions. However, research in this area, particularly within specific contexts, remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to identify the factors associated with perceived social support among adolescents in the Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia Regional State. Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 1172 adolescents selected through a stratified multi-stage sampling method. Structured face-to-face interviews were employed for data collection. Summary statistics were utilized for data presentation. Multiple linear regressions were then performed to identify factors associated with perceived social support. The strength and direction of associations were presented using b coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The level of statistical significance was set at alpha 5%. Result: The total mean for perceived social support among adolescents was 57.02 ± 12.68. Adolescents living with their biological parents reported significantly higher levels of perceived social support (b = 4.17, 95% CI: 2.00 to 6.34) compared to their counterparts. Similarly, adolescents engaged in paid work within the last 12 months reported higher perceived social support (b = 3.43, 95% CI: 1.39 to 5.46). Higher levels of parental monitoring were also associated with increased perceived social support (b = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.23 to 4.82). Additionally, adolescents who perceived risks for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems reported higher levels of perceived social support (b = 2.76, 95% CI: 0.84 to 4.69). Moreover, adolescents with good knowledge about SRH rights exhibited increased perceived social support (b = 2.46, 95% CI: 0.89 to 4.02). Furthermore, adolescents residing in rural areas reported higher levels of perceived social support compared to those in urban areas (b = 1.56, 95% CI: 0.16 to 3.11) Conclusion: The findings of this study reveal that factors such as living arrangements, employment status, parental monitoring, perceived risks for SRH problems, knowledge about SRH rights, and geographical context emerged as important predictors of perceived social support.
