Diamond single crystals could be an attractive nonlinear THz source due to the materials high damage threshold, high transparency and THz-NIR phase matching ability. However, the buildup of second order nonlinear fields is restricted due to the centrosymmetric structure of the crystal. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear broadband THz emission due to optical rectification from diamond single crystals induced by embedded symmetry breaking nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. The nonlinear temporal and spectral emission properties of the crystal are examined using THz time domain spectroscopy after pumping with NIR femtosecond pulses. The diamond-NV cell structure was also examined using density functional theory (DFT). Recent years have seen significant growth of quantum technologies, and specifically quantum sensing, both in terms of the capabilities of advanced platforms and their applications. One of the leading platforms in this context is nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond, providing versatile, high-sensitivity, and high-resolution magnetic sensing. Nevertheless, current schemes for spin resonance magnetic sensing (as applied by NV quantum sensing) suffer from tradeoffs associated with sensitivity, dynamic range, and bandwidth. Here we address this issue, and implement machine learning tools to enhance NV magnetic sensing in terms of the sensitivity/bandwidth tradeoff in large dynamic range scenarios. We experimentally demonstrate this new approach, reaching an improvement in the relevant figure of merit by a factor of up to 5. The study of coherence dynamics in open quantum systems, specifically addressing various physical realizations of quantum systems and environments, is a long-standing and central pillar of quantum science and technology. As such, a large body of work establishes a firm theoretical understanding of these processes. Nevertheless, a fundamental aspect of decoherence dynamics, namely the central limit theorem of qubit dephasing in the central spin model, which leads to a Gaussian approximation, lacks formal proof in realistically relevant scenarios. Here we prove this approximation for a bath depicted by an Ising spin system, in the presence of disorder and several (most relevant) functional forms of qubit-bath coupling. Importantly, we show that in certain cases, namely for short-range (exponentially decaying) coupling, this approximation breaks. These results provide a theoretical framework for studying decoherence dynamics in various systems and lead to insights into dephasing behavior with implications for applications in quantum information, quantum computing, and other quantum technologies.

Understanding the dynamics of dissipative quantum systems, particularly beyond the weak coupling approximation, is central to various quantum applications. While numerically exact methods provide accurate solutions, they often lack the analytical insight provided by theoretical approaches. In this study, we employ the recently-developed method dubbed the effective Hamiltonian theory to understand the dynamics of system-bath configurations without resorting to a perturbative description of the system-bath coupling energy. Through a combination of mapping steps and truncation, the effective Hamiltonian theory offers both analytical insights into signatures of strong couplings in open quantum systems and a straightforward path for numerical simulations. To validate the accuracy of the method, we apply it to two canonical models: a single spin immersed in a bosonic bath and two noninteracting spins in a common bath. In both cases, we study the transient regime and the steady state limit at nonzero temperature, and spanning system-bath interactions from the weak to the strong regime. By comparing the results of the effective Hamiltonian theory with numerically exact simulations, we show that although the former overlooks non-Markovian features in the transient equilibration dynamics, it correctly captures non-perturbative bath-generated couplings between otherwise non-interacting spins as observed in their synchronization dynamics and correlations. Altogether, the effective Hamiltonian theory offers a powerful approach to understanding strong coupling dynamics and thermodynamics, capturing the signatures of such interactions in both relaxation dynamics and in the steady state limit., Comment: Journal version

Complex quantum systems and their various applications are susceptible to noise of coherent and incoherent nature. Characterization of noise and its sources is an open, key challenge in quantum technology applications, especially in terms of distinguishing between inherent incoherent noise and systematic coherent errors. In this paper, we study a scheme of repeated sequential measurements that enables the characterization of incoherent errors by reducing the effects of coherent errors. We demonstrate this approach using a coherently controlled Nitrogen Vacancy in diamond, coupled to both a natural nuclear spin bath (non-Markovian) and to experimentally controlled relaxation through an optical pumping process (nearly Markovian). Our results show mitigation of coherent errors both for Markovian and Non-Markovian incoherent noise profiles. We apply this scheme to the estimation of the dephasing time ($T_2^*$) due to incoherent noise. We observe an improved robustness against coherent errors in the estimation of dephasing time ($T_2^*$) compared to the standard (Ramsey) measurement.

Quantum sensing using local defects in solid-state systems has gained significant attention over the past several years, with impressive results demonstrated both in Academia and in Industry. Specifically, employing large volume and high density ensembles for beyond state-of-the-art sensitives is of clear interest. A major obstacle for achieving such record sensitivities is associated with the need to realize strong, homogeneous driving of the sensor defects. Here we focus on high-frequency microwave sensing using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, and develop a modified split-ring resonator design to address this issue. We demonstrate enhanced drive strengths and homogeneities over large volumes compared to previous results, with prospects for enabling the desired sensitivities. We reach Rabi frequencies of up to 18 [MHz] with an efficiency ratio of 2 [$Gauss/\sqrt{Watt}$], along with an inhomogeneity of $<0.7\%$ in a volume of $0.1\:mm^3$.

We provide a critical overview of the theory of the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, i.e., phenomena in which the chirality of molecular species imparts significant spin selectivity to various electron processes. Based on discussions in a recently held workshop, and further work published since, we review the status of CISS effects - in electron transmission, electron transport, and chemical reactions. For each, we provide a detailed discussion of the state-of-the-art in theoretical understanding and identify remaining challenges and research opportunities.

Quantum computation and simulation requires strong coherent coupling between qubits, which may be spatially separated. Achieving this coupling for solid-state based spin qubits is a long-standing challenge. Here we theoretically investigate a method for achieving such coupling, based on superconducting nano-structures designed to channel the magnetic flux created by the qubits. We detail semi-classical analytical calculations and simulations of the magnetic field created by a magnetic dipole, depicting the spin qubit, positioned directly below nanofabricated apertures in a superconducting layer. We show that such structures could channel the magnetic flux, enhancing the dipole-dipole interaction between spin qubits and changing its scaling with distance, thus potentially paving the way for controllably engineering an interacting spin system.

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have been demonstrated as useful magnetic sensors, in particular for measuring spin fluctuations, achieving high sensitivity and spatial resolution. These abilities can be used to explore various biological and chemical processes, catalyzed by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Here we demonstrate a novel approach to measure and quantify Hydroxyl radicals with high spatial resolution, using the fluorescence difference between NV charged states. According to the results, the achieved NV sensitivity is $11 \pm 4 \frac{nM}{\sqrt Hz}$, realized in-situ without spin labels and localized to a volume of $\sim 10$ picoliter.

When an electron passes through a chiral molecule there is a high probability for a correlation between the momentum and spin of the charge, thus leading to spin polarized current. This phenomenon is known as the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. One of the most surprising experimental results recently demonstrated is that magnetization reversal in a ferromagnet (FM) with perpendicular anisotropy can be realized solely by chemisorbing a chiral molecular monolayer without applying any current or external magnetic field. This result raises the currently open question of whether this effect is due to the bonding event, held by the ferromagnet, or a long timescale effect stabilized by exchange interactions. In this work we have performed vectorial magnetic field measurements of the magnetization reorientation of a ferromagnetic layer exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy due to CISS using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, and followed the time dynamics of this effect. In parallel, we have measured the molecular monolayer tilt angle in order to find a correlation between the time dependence of the magnetization re-orientation and the change of the tilt angle of the molecular monolayer. We have identified that changes in the magnetization direction correspond to changes of the molecular monolayer tilt angle, providing evidence for a long-timescale characteristic of the induced magnetization reorientation. This suggests that the CISS effect has an effect over long-timescales which we attribute to exchange interactions. These results offer significant insights into the fundamental processes underlying the CISS effect, contributing to the implementation of CISS in state-of-the-art applications such as spintronic and magnetic memory devices., Comment: I. The vast research conducted on Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond in recent years opened the door for a wide range of NV based applications. However, some properties of the NV center dynamics and energy levels remain unknown. In this work, we propose a charge conversion pulsed sequence scheme for locating the NV center singlet manifold energy level, by multi-color excitation using a tunable laser. Spin bath polarization is the key to enhancing the sensitivity of quantum sensing and information processing. Significant effort has been invested in identifying the consequences of quantumness and its control for spin-bath polarization. Here, by contrast, we focus on the adverse role of quantum correlations (entanglement) in a spin bath that can impede its cooling in many realistic scenarios. We propose to remove this impediment by modified cooling schemes, incorporating probe-induced disentanglement via alternating, non-commuting probe-bath interactions, so as to suppress the buildup of quantum correlations in the bath. The resulting bath polarization is thereby exponentially enhanced. We propose a scheme for sensing of an oscillating field in systems with large inhomogeneous broadening and driving field variation by applying sequences of phased, adiabatic, chirped pulses. The latter act as a double filter for dynamical decoupling, where the adiabatic changes of the mixing angle during the pulses rectify the signal and partially remove frequency noise. The sudden changes between the pulses act as instantaneous $\pi$ pulses in the adiabatic basis for additional noise suppression. We also use the pulses' phases to correct for other errors, e.g., due to non-adiabatic couplings. Our technique improves significantly the coherence time in comparison to standard XY8 dynamical decoupling in realistic simulations in NV centers with large inhomogeneous broadening and is suitable for experimental implementations with substantial driving field inhomogeneity. Beyond the theoretical proposal, we also present proof-of-principle experimental results for quantum sensing of an oscillating field in NV centers in diamond, demonstrating superior performance compared to the standard technique.

Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been used in recent years for a wide range of applications, from nano-scale NMR to quantum computation. These applications depend strongly on the efficient readout of the NV center's spin state, which is currently limited. Here we suggest a method of reading the NV center's spin state, using the weak optical transition in the singlet manifold. We numerically calculate the number of photons collected from each spin state using this technique, and show that an order of magnitude enhancement in spin readout signal-to-noise ratio is expected, making single-shot spin readout within reach. Thus, this method could lead to an order of magnitude enhancement in sensitivity for ubiquitous NV based sensing applications, and remove a major obstacle from using NVs for quantum information processing.

We show that microwave-driven NV centers can function as topological mode switches by utilizing a special degeneracy called an exceptional point (EP). By tuning the intensities and frequencies of the driving fields, we find an EP---where two normal modes of the system coalesce---and, then, use it to simulate the dynamics and demonstrate topological and non-reciprocal mode switching. By comparing density matrices of the input and output states, we find that the quantum correlations decrease by three orders of magnitude at room temperature, and discuss ways for improving this result. This work extends the theory of topological mode switches (originally derived for pure states) to mixed states and is, therefore, applicable to general open quantum systems. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of solid-state spin decoherence in an electronic spin bath, focusing specifically on ensembles of nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond and the associated substitutional nitrogen spin bath. We perform measurements of NV spin free induction decay times $T_2^*$ and spin-echo coherence times $T_2$ in 25 diamond samples with nitrogen concentrations [N] ranging from 0.01 to 300\,ppm. We introduce a microscopic model and perform numerical simulations to quantitatively explain the degradation of both $T_2^*$ and $T_2$ over four orders of magnitude in [N]. Our results resolve a long-standing discrepancy observed in NV $T_2$ experiments, enabling us to describe NV ensemble spin coherence decay shapes as emerging consistently from the contribution of many individual NV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + supplement

Spin-bath noise characterization, which is typically performed by multi-pulse control sequences, is essential for understanding most spin dynamics in the solid-state. Here, we theoretically propose a method for extracting the characteristic parameters of a noise source with a known spectrum, using a single modified Hahn-echo sequence. By varying the application time of the pulse, measuring the coherence curves of an addressable spin, and fitting the decay coefficients to a theoretical function derived by us, we extract parameters characterizing the physical nature of the noise. Assuming a Lorentzian noise spectrum, we illustrate this method for extracting the correlation time of a bath of nitrogen paramagnetic impurities in diamond, and its coupling strength to the addressable spin of a nitrogen-vacancy center. Considering a realistic experimental scenario with $5\%$ measurement error, the parameters can be extracted with an accuracy of $\sim 10 \%$. The scheme is effective for samples having a natural homogeneous coherence time ($T_2$) up to two orders of magnitude greater than the inhomogeneous coherence time ($T_2^*$), and mitigates technical noise when further averaging is irrelevant. Beyond its potential for reducing experiment times by an order-of-magnitude, such single-pulse noise characterization could minimize the effects of long time-scale drifts and accumulating pulse imperfections and numerical errors.

Understanding the physical origin of noise affecting quantum systems is important for nearly every quantum application. Quantum noise spectroscopy has been employed in various quantum systems, such as superconducting qubits, NV centers and trapped ions. Traditional spectroscopy methods are usually efficient in measuring noise spectra with mostly monotonically decaying contributions. However, there are important scenarios in which the noise spectrum is broadband and non-monotonous, thus posing a challenge to existing noise spectroscopy schemes. Here, we compare several methods for noise spectroscopy: spectral decomposition based on the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) sequence, the recently presented DYnamic Sensitivity COntrol (DYSCO) sequence and a modified DYSCO sequence with a Gaussian envelope (gDYSCO). The performance of the sequences is quantified by analytic and numeric determination of the frequency resolution, bandwidth and sensitivity, revealing a supremacy of gDYSCO to reconstruct non-trivial features. Utilizing an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond coupled to a high density $^{13}$C nuclear spin environment, we experimentally confirm our findings. The combination of the presented schemes offers potential to record high quality noise spectra as a prerequisite to generate quantum systems unlimited by their spin-bath environment.

The coupling between defects in diamond and a superconducting microwave resonator is studied in the nonlinear regime. Both negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy and P1 defects are explored. The measured cavity mode response exhibits strong nonlinearity near a spin resonance. Data is compared with theoretical predictions and a good agreement is obtained in a wide range of externally controlled parameters. The nonlinear effect under study in the current paper is expected to play a role in any cavity-based magnetic resonance imaging technique and to impose a fundamental limit upon its sensitivity., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

It was recently demonstrated that bulk nuclear polarization can be obtained using Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) color centers in diamonds, even at ambient conditions. This is based on the optical polarization of the NV electron spin, and using several polarization transfer methods. One such method is the NOVEL sequence, where a spin-locked sequence is applied on the NV spin, with a microwave power equal to the nuclear precession frequency. This was performed at relatively high fields, to allow for both polarization transfer and noise decoupling. As a result, this scheme requires accurate magnetic field alignment in order preserve the NV properties. Such a requirement may be undesired or impractical in many practical scenareios. Here we present a new sequence, termed the refocused NOVEL, which can be used for polarization transfer (and detection) even at low fields. Numerical simulations are performed, taking into account both the spin Hamiltonian and spin-decoherence, and we show that, under realistic parameters, it can outperform the NOVEL sequence.

Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond have emerged as promising quantum solid-state systems, with applications ranging from quantum information processing to magnetic sensing. One of the most useful properties of NVs is the ability to read their ground-state spin projection optically at room temperature. This work provides a theoretical analysis of Purcell enhanced NV optical coupling, through which we find optimal parameters for maximal Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the optical spin-state readout. We conclude that a combined increase in spontaneous emission (through Purcell enhancement) and in optical excitation could significantly increase the readout SNR.

We demonstrate significant improvements of the spin coherence time of a dense ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond through optimized dynamical decoupling (DD). Cooling the sample down to $77$ K suppresses longitudinal spin relaxation $T_1$ effects and DD microwave pulses are used to increase the transverse coherence time $T_2$ from $\sim 0.7$ ms up to $\sim 30$ ms. We extend previous work of single-axis (CPMG) DD towards the preservation of arbitrary spin states. Following a theoretical and experimental characterization of pulse and detuning errors, we compare the performance of various DD protocols. We identify that the optimal control scheme for preserving an arbitrary spin state is a recursive protocol, the concatenated version of the XY8 pulse sequence. The improved spin coherence might have an immediate impact on improvements of the sensitivities of AC magnetometry. Moreover, the protocol can be used on denser diamond samples to increase coherence times up to NV-NV interaction time scales, a major step towards the creation of quantum collective NV spin states.
