Abstract

Use of Mathematical Morphology (MM) based filters to detect faults in power systems have been discussed in recent literature. These studies have been predominantly focused on AC systems and associated arc faults. However, fault detection applications based on MM filtering in DC systems have not been adequately discussed. This paper presents how MM based filtering techniques and its composite operations could be used to successfully detect arc faults in a PV system. Throughout the analysis, series and parallel arc fault signatures obtained from an actual PV system with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is used. Effect of MM parameters on detection sensitivity is explained.

Abstract

In the studies of the urban Roman baths carried out, the water supply is one of the least addressed issues. Although water was the decisive element for the functioning of the Roman baths (whether large or small), in most of the editions (general or on specific monuments) the attention was focused above all on technical-functional aspects (such as heating techniques), decorative (pertaining to flooring and covering wall, as well as sculptural material) or social (such as the role in Roman society). But the water supply of thermal baths built in urban areas is a subject not evaluated in its complexity, which instead needs to be examined with particular attention. The most emblematic case in this regard is constituted by the Baths of Agrippa, the first urban public spa, inaugurated in 12 BC contextually with the construction of the Aqua Virgo, the first aqueduct useful to serve the Campo Marzio, in 19 BC. Undoubtedly, the progressive construction of aqueducts in cities in Italy (as well as in the provinces) starting from the Augustan age constituted a decisive opportunity in many cases for the construction of new baths, but the aqueducts-baths association, however, it was by no means a fixed rule. By analyzing some cities of Roman Italy, it is clear that urban baths have often used water supply methods other than connection to public aqueducts. These cases, duly analyzed, offer not only an articulated picture of the baths-water relationship, but also consequences that are not secondary at a topographical, architectural as well as economic level.

Abstract

The hysteresis of the open-circuit voltage as a function of the state-of-charge in a 20 Ah lithium-iron-phosphate battery is investigated starting from pulsed-current experiments at a fixed temperature and ageing state, in order to derive a model that may reproduce well the battery behaviour. The hysteretic behaviour is modelled with the classical Preisach model used in magnetic materials. The paper shows that the Preisach model can successfully be applied to the lithium-ion battery hysteresis. First, the model is discretised by using the Everett function and identified by means of experiments, in which first-order reversal branches are measured. Then, the model is simulated and compared to some experimental data collected with different current profiles and to a one-state variable model previously used in the literature. The results show that the hysteresis is well reproduced with rms errors around 2%. The advantages of the Preisach-based method, when compared to other models, are the formal and repeatable identification procedure and the limited computational resources needed for the model simulation that makes it appropriate for the online implementation on low-complexity hardware platforms.

Abstract

U-PHOS Project aims at analysing and characterising the behaviour of a large diameter Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) on board REXUS 22 sounding rocket. A PHP is a passive thermal control device where the heat is efficiently transported by means of the self-sustained oscillatory fluid motion driven by the phase change phenomena. Since, in milli-gravity conditions, buoyancy forces become less intense, the PHP diameter may be increased still maintaining the slug/plug typical flow pattern. Consequently, the PHP heat power capability may be increased too. U-PHOS aims at proving that a large diameter PHP effectively works in milli-g conditions by characterizing its thermal response during a sounding rocket flight. The actual PHP tube is made of aluminum (3 mm inner diameter, filled with FC-72), heated at the evaporator by a compact electrical resistance, cooled at the condenser by a Phase Change Material (PCM) embedded in a metallic foam. The tube wall temperatures are recorded by means of Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors; the local fluid pressure is acquired by means of a pressure transducer. The present work intends to report the actual status of the project, focusing in particular on the experiment improvements with respect to the previous campaign.
