4. e-Genia3 An AgentSpeak extension for empathic agents

Abstract

In this paper, we present e-Genia3 an extension of AgentSpeak to provide support to the development of empathic agents. The new extension modifies the agent's reasoning processes to select plans according to the analyzed event and the affective state and personality of the agent. In addition, our proposal allows a software agent to simulate the distinction between self and other agents through two different event appraisal processes: the empathic appraisal process, for eliciting emotions as a response to other agents emotions, and the regular affective appraisal process for other non-empathic affective events. The empathic regulation process adapts the elicited empathic emotion based on intrapersonal factors (e.g., the agent's personality and affective memory) and interpersonal characteristics of the agent (e.g., the affective link between the agents). The use of a memory of past events and their corresponding elicited emotions allows the maintaining of an affective link to support long-term empathic interaction between agents.

Abstract

In this article we study the impact of the negotiation environment on the performance of several intra-team strategies (team dynamics) for agent-based negotiation teams that negotiate with an opponent. An agent-based negotiation team is a group of agents that joins together as a party because they share common interests in the negotiation at hand. It is experimentally shown how negotiation environment conditions like the deadline of both parties, the concession speed of the opponent, similarity among team members, and team size affect performance metrics like the minimum utility of team members, the average utility of team members, and the number of negotiation rounds. Abstract

In this article, an agent-based negotiation model for negotiation teams that negotiate a deal with an opponent is presented. Agent-based negotiation teams are groups of agents that join together as a single negotiation party because they share an interest that is related to the negotiation process. The model relies on a trusted mediator that coordinates and helps team members in the decisions that they have to take during the negotiation process: which offer is sent to the opponent, and whether the offers received from the opponent are accepted. The main strength of the proposed negotiation model is the fact that it guarantees unanimity within team decisions since decisions report a utility to team members that is greater than or equal to their aspiration levels at each negotiation round. This work analyzes how unanimous decisions are taken within the team and the robustness of the model against different types of manipulations. Abstract

Ambient Intelligence aims to offer personalized services and easier ways of interaction between people and systems. Since several users and systems may coexist in these environments, it is quite possible that entities with opposing preferences need to cooperate to reach their respective goals. Automated negotiation is pointed as one of the mechanisms that may provide a solution to this kind of problems. In this article, a multi-issue bilateral bargaining model for Ambient Intelligence domains is presented where it is assumed that agents have computational bounded resources and do not know their opponents' preferences. The main goal of this work is to provide negotiation models that obtain efficient agreements while maintaining the computational cost low. A niching genetic algorithm is used before the negotiation process to sample one's own utility function (self-sampling). During the negotiation process, genetic operators are applied over the opponent's and one's own offers in order to sample new offers that are interesting for both parties. Results show that the proposed model is capable of outperforming similarity heuristics which only sample before the negotiation process and of obtaining similar results to similarity heuristics which have access to all of the possible offers., Comment: Information Sciences, 2013

Abstract

An agent-based negotiation team is a group of interdependent agents that join together as a single negotiation party due to their shared interests in the negotiation at hand. The reasons to employ an agent-based negotiation team may vary: (i) more computation and parallelization capabilities, (ii) unite agents with different expertise and skills whose joint work makes it possible to tackle complex negotiation domains, (iii) the necessity to represent different stakeholders or different preferences in the same party (e.g., organizations, countries, and married couple). The topic of agent-based negotiation teams has been recently introduced in multi-agent research. Therefore, it is necessary to identify good practices, challenges, and related research that may help in advancing the state-of-the-art in agent-based negotiation teams. For that reason, in this article we review the tasks to be carried out by agent-based negotiation teams. Each task is analyzed and related with current advances in different research areas. Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new computational model for affective knowledge representation that will be used for affective agents located in a multicultural environment. To this end, we present the results of two experiments, the first of which determines the most appropriate labels to define the pleasure-arousal dimensions in the culture and language of the agent's location. As an example, we use the Portuguese and Swedish languages. The second experiment identifies the most suitable values of pleasure-arousal dimensions for each emotion expressed in these example languages. The results obtained are compared with a previous model developed for agents interacting with European Spanish-speaking people. Results show significant differences in the values of pleasure and arousal associated with emotions across languages and cultures. The results also show no significant differences in gender or age when associating levels of pleasure-arousal to emotions. We propose two applications of these representation models, such as a model of an agent capable of adapting its affective behavior to different cultural environments and a human-aware planning scenario in which the agent uses this dimensional representation to recognize the user's affective state and select the best strategy to redirect that affective state to the target state.

34. A Multidimensional Culturally Adapted Representation of Emotions for Affective Computational Simulation and Recognition.

Abstract

One of the main challenges in affective computing is the development of models to represent the information that is inherent to emotions. It is necessary to consider that the terms used by humans to name emotions depend on the culture and language used. This article presents an experiment-based method to represent and adapt emotion terms to different cultural environments. We propose using circular boxplots to analyze the distribution of emotions in the Pleasure-Arousal space. From the results of this analysis, we define a new cross-cultural representation model of emotions in which each emotion term is assigned to an area in the Pleasure-Arousal space. An emotion is represented by a vector in which the direction indicates the type, and the module indicates the intensity of the emotion. We propose two methods based on fuzzy logic to represent and express emotions: the emotion representation process in which the term associated with the recognized emotion is defuzzified and projected as a vector in the Pleasure-Arousal space; and the emotion expression process in which a fuzzification of the vector is produced, generating a fuzzy emotion term that is adapted to the culture and language in which the emotion will be used. Abstract

This volume gathers the peer-reviewed papers presented at the ninth edition of the International Workshop on Service-oriented, Holonic and Multi-Agent Manufacturing Systems for the Industry of the Future, SOHOMA 2019 organized on 3–4 October 2019 by Universitat Politècnica de València in collaboration with University Politehnica of Bucharest (the CIMR Research Centre in Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Robotics), Polytechnic University Hauts-de-France (the LAMIH Laboratory of Industrial and Human–Automation Control, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science) and Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (the CeDRI Research Centre in Digitalization and Intelligent Robotics).
