We report a measurement of a beam–target double-polarisation observable (E) for the γ→n→(p)→K+Σ−(p) reaction. The data were obtained impinging the circularly-polarised energy-tagged photon beam of Hall B at Jefferson Lab on a longitudinally-polarised frozen-spin hydrogen deuteride (HD) nuclear target. The E observable for an effective neutron target was determined for centre-of-mass energies 1.70≤W≤2.30 GeV, with reaction products detected over a wide angular acceptance by the CLAS spectrometer. These new double-polarisation data give unique constraints on the strange decays of excited neutron states. Inclusion of the new data within the Bonn-Gatchina theoretical model results in significant changes for the extracted photocouplings of a number of established nucleon resonances. Possible improvements in the PWA description of the experimental data with additional “missing” resonance states, including the N(2120)3/2− resonance, are also quantified.

Abstract We examine the differences in meteorological output from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model run at 270 m horizontal resolution using 10 m, 100 m and 1 km resolution 3D neighborhood morphological inputs and with no morphological inputs. We find that the spatial variability in temperature, humidity, and other meteorological variables across the city can vary with the resolution and the coverage of the 3D urban morphological input, and that larger differences occur between simulations run without 3D morphological input and those run with some type of 3D morphology. We also find that the inclusion of input-building-defined roughness length calculations would improve simulation results further. We show that these inputs produce different patterns of heat wave spatial heterogeneity across the city of Washington, DC. These findings suggest that understanding neighborhood level urban sustainability under extreme heat waves, especially for vulnerable neighborhoods, requires attention to the representation of surface terrain in numerical weather models.

Ullanlinna Narcolepsy Scale (UNS) is the most widely used scale for primary screening for narcolepsy. It has a high sensitivity (83.5 %) and specificity (84.1 %). However, the length of the scale and the time taken by patients to complete it may limit its use. The shortest scale for primary detection of narcolepsy type 1 is the Swiss Narcolepsy Scale (SNS), which also has a high sensitivity (89 %) and specificity (88 %). Objective: to validate the SNS in Russian language and compare it with English and German versions as well as with some other scales. Material and methods. 53 patients with narcolepsy type 1 were included. Narcolepsy was diagnosed according to the ICSD-3 criteria. The control group consisted of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (n = 71) and chronic insomnia (n = 31). Sensitivity and specificity of the Russian version of the scale (RU-SNS) were compared with UNS and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaires. Results. The mean score of the RU-SNS for patients with narcolepsy was – 33.64 ± 5.14. In the control group, the mean score was 29.75 ± 16.68. The sensitivity and specificity were 84.9 % and 95.1 %, respectively. For UNS, the mean score was 32.79 ± 9.87 in the narcolepsy group and 8.35 ± 4.84 in the control group. Sensitivity was 96.2 % and specificity – 84.3 %. For ESS, the mean score in narcolepsy group was 17.75 ± 4.28 and 8.7 ± 5.7 for controls. The sensitivity was estimated at 94.3 % and specificity at 61.8 %. Conclusion. The RU-SNS demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity, while the UNS also has high sensitivity but low specificity. ESS has high sensitivity but low specificity as it is only designed to detect pathological daytime sleepiness. Based on these data, the SNS can be used as a valid tool for the early diagnosis of narcolepsy type 1.

Food security is inherently linked to national security, as access to adequate and reliable food supplies is critical to social stability and economic prosperity. The current food production system and agricultural policies rely heavily on international supply chains, creating instead a dependence on external sources for food security, while internal sources have been declining for years due to territorial food specialization and monocrops. Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, global supply chains have experienced unprecedented disruptions due to a combination of factors. The lack of strategic planning to ensure food security continuity in the midst of the geopolitical landscape, supply chain disruption, and soil security overlooked, significantly increase the risk of food and agricultural input shortages, price volatility, and labor disruptions affecting both industrialized and developing countries. In addition, misunderstanding, undervaluation, and underestimation of securing soil among stakeholders, policymakers and legislation are significant factors that exacerbate the problem. As a result, threats to the supply chain compromise the pillars of food security in ways that affect countries unequally, potentially leading to social instability and threatening national and international security. By treating soil as the cornerstone of national security, countries can develop coherent soil policies and strategies. This approach could lead to the development of coordinated decisions and the implementation of a global agenda for sustainable agricultural practices, improve food security, and ensure long-term stability and resilience.This article aims to examine how securing soil emerges as a pivotal strategy for ensuring food security and fostering national and international security during times of disruption.

Ce travail s’est fixé comme objectif de contribuer à la connaissance d’une nouvelle plante adventice du genre Croton, de la famille des Euphorbiaceae pour la flore du Sénégal. La méthodologie de travail s’est basée sur la récolte d’une douzaine d’échantillons du nouveau taxon de Croton, mis sous presse et ramenés à l’Herbier Dakar. La comparaison des traits de caractères macro et micro-morphologiques de cette espèce du genre Croton avec ceux des spécimens du même genre de la flore du Sénégal, a montré qu’il s’agit d’une nouvelle espèce. L’identification de ce nouveau taxon a été facilitée par les flores disponibles dans l’herbier Dakar. Les résultats ont montré qu’il s’agit de Croton hirtus L'Hér. qui est une adventice originaire d’Amérique latine et qui s’est introduite en Afrique et en Asie tropicales. Abstract Background Prophylactic abdominal drainage is current standard practice after distal pancreatectomy (DP), with the aim to divert pancreatic fluid in case of a postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) aimed to prevent further complications as bleeding. Whereas POPF after pancreatoduodenectomy, by definition, involves infection due to anastomotic dehiscence, a POPF after DP is essentially sterile since the bowel is not opened and no anastomoses are created. Routine drainage after DP could potentially be omitted and this could even be beneficial because of the hypothetical prevention of drain-induced infections (Fisher, 2018). Abdominal drainage, moreover, should only be performed if it provides additional safety or comfort to the patient. In clinical practice, drains cause clear discomfort. One multicenter randomized controlled trial confirmed the safety of omitting abdominal drainage but did not stratify patients according to their risk of POPF and did not describe a standardized strategy for pancreatic transection. Therefore, a large pragmatic multicenter randomized controlled trial is required, with prespecified POPF risk groups and a homogeneous method of stump closure. The objective of the PANDORINA trial is to evaluate the non-inferiority of omitting routine intra-abdominal drainage after DP on postoperative morbidity (Clavien-Dindo score ≥ 3), and, secondarily, POPF grade B/C. Methods/design Binational multicenter randomized controlled non-inferiority trial, stratifying patients to high and low risk for POPF grade B/C and incorporating a standardized strategy for pancreatic transection. Two groups of 141 patients (282 in total) undergoing elective DP (either open or minimally invasive, with or without splenectomy). Primary outcome is postoperative rate of morbidity (Clavien-Dindo score ≥ 3), and the most relevant secondary outcome is grade B/C POPF. Other secondary outcomes include surgical reintervention, percutaneous catheter drainage, endoscopic catheter drainage, abdominal collections (not requiring drainage), wound infection, delayed gastric emptying, postpancreatectomy hemorrhage as defined by the international study group for pancreatic surgery (ISGPS) (Wente et al., 2007), length of stay (LOS), readmission within 90 days, in-hospital mortality, and 90-day mortality. Discussion PANDORINA is the first binational, multicenter, randomized controlled non-inferiority trial with the primary objective to evaluate the hypothesis that omitting prophylactic abdominal drainage after DP does not worsen the risk of postoperative severe complications (Wente et al., 2007; Bassi et al., 2017). Most of the published studies on drain placement after pancreatectomy focus on both pancreatoduodenectomy and DP, but these two entities present are associated with different complications and therefore deserve separate evaluation (McMillan et al., 2016; Pratt et al., 2006). The PANDORINA trial is innovative since it takes the preoperative risk on POPF into account based on the D-FRS and it warrants homogenous stump closing by using the same graded compression technique and same stapling device (de Pastena et al., 2022; Asbun and Stauffer, 2011).

The aim of this study was to better understand the potential impact of partial vs. complete renewal of the bulk fluid during drug release measurements from poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based implants. A “standard experimental set-up”, in which the implants were directly exposed to well agitated phosphate buffer pH 7.4 was used, as well as set-ups, in which the implants were embedded within agarose hydrogels (mimicking living tissue). The gels were exposed to well agitated phosphate buffer pH 7.4. Ibuprofen-loaded implants were prepared by hot melt extrusion. The systems were thoroughly characterized before and during drug release by optical and scanning electron microscopy, gravimetric analysis, pH and solubility measurements as well as gel permeation chromatography. The bulk fluid was either completely or partially replaced by fresh medium at each sampling time point. In all cases, sink conditions were provided in the agitated bulk fluids throughout the experiments. Interestingly, the agarose set-ups did not show any noteworthy impact of the bulk fluid sampling volume on the observed drug release patterns, whereas complete fluid renewal in the “standard set-up” led to accelerated drug release. This could be explained by the considerable fragility of the implants once substantial polymer swelling set on, transforming them into PLGA gels: Complete fluid renewal caused partial disintegration and damage of the highly swollen systems, decreasing the lengths of the diffusion pathways for the drug. The mechanical stress is very much reduced at low sampling volumes, or if the implants are embedded within agarose gels. Thus, great care must be taken when defining the conditions for in vitro drug release measurements from PLGA-based implants: Once substantial system swelling sets on, the devices become highly fragile.

Abstract Background Tenacibaculum maritimum is a fish pathogen known for causing serious damage to a broad range of wild and farmed marine fish populations worldwide. The recently sequenced genome of T. maritimum strain NCIMB 2154T provided unprecedented information on the possible molecular mechanisms involved in the virulence of this species. However, little is known about the dynamic of infection in vivo, and information is lacking on both the intrinsic host response (gene expression) and its associated microbiota. Here, we applied complementary omic approaches, including dual RNAseq and 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding sequencing using Nanopore and short-read Illumina technologies to unravel the host–pathogen interplay in an experimental infection system using the tropical fish Platax orbicularis as model. Results We showed that the infection of the host is characterised by an enhancement of functions associated with antibiotic and glucans catabolism functions but a reduction of sulfate assimilation process in T. maritimum. The fish host concurrently displays a large panel of immune effectors, notably involving innate response and triggering acute inflammatory response. In addition, our results suggest that fish activate an adaptive immune response visible through the stimulation of T-helper cells, Th17, with congruent reduction of Th2 and T-regulatory cells. Fish were, however, largely sensitive to infection, and less than 25% survived after 96 hpi. These surviving fish showed no evidence of stress (cortisol levels) or significant difference in microbiome diversity compared with controls at the same sampling time. The presence of T. maritimum in resistant fish skin and the total absence of any skin lesions suggest that these fish did not escape contact with the pathogen, but rather that some mechanisms prevented pathogens entry. In resistant individuals, we detected up-regulation of specific immune-related genes differentiating resistant individuals from controls at 96 hpi, which suggests a possible genomic basis of resistance, although no genetic variation in coding regions was found. Conclusion Here we focus in detail on the interplay between common fish pathogens and host immune response during experimental infection. We further highlight key actors of defence response, pathogenicity and possible genomic bases of fish resistance to T. maritimum.

Abstract Large-scale radiation emergency scenarios involving protracted low dose rate radiation exposure (e.g. a hidden radioactive source in a train) necessitate the development of high throughput methods for providing rapid individual dose estimates. During the RENEB (Running the European Network of Biodosimetry) 2019 exercise, four EDTA-blood samples were exposed to an Iridium-192 source (1.36 TBq, Tech-Ops 880 Sentinal) at varying distances and geometries. This resulted in protracted doses ranging between 0.2 and 2.4 Gy using dose rates of 1.5–40 mGy/min and exposure times of 1 or 2.5 h. Blood samples were exposed in thermo bottles that maintained temperatures between 39 and 27.7 °C. After exposure, EDTA-blood samples were transferred into PAXGene tubes to preserve RNA. RNA was isolated in one laboratory and aliquots of four blinded RNA were sent to another five teams for dose estimation based on gene expression changes. Using an X-ray machine, samples for two calibration curves (first: constant dose rate of 8.3 mGy/min and 0.5–8 h varying exposure times; second: varying dose rates of 0.5–8.3 mGy/min and 4 h exposure time) were generated for distribution. Assays were run in each laboratory according to locally established protocols using either a microarray platform (one team) or quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR, five teams). The qRT-PCR measurements were highly reproducible with coefficient of variation below 15% in ≥ 75% of measurements resulting in reported dose estimates ranging between 0 and 0.5 Gy in all samples and in all laboratories. Up to twofold reductions in RNA copy numbers per degree Celsius relative to 37 °C were observed. However, when irradiating independent samples equivalent to the blinded samples but increasing the combined exposure and incubation time to 4 h at 37 °C, expected gene expression changes corresponding to the absorbed doses were observed. Clearly, time and an optimal temperature of 37 °C must be allowed for the biological response to manifest as gene expression changes prior to running the gene expression assay. In conclusion, dose reconstructions based on gene expression measurements are highly reproducible across different techniques, protocols and laboratories. Even a radiation dose of 0.25 Gy protracted over 4 h (1 mGy/min) can be identified. These results demonstrate the importance of the incubation conditions and time span between radiation exposure and measurements of gene expression changes when using this method in a field exercise or real emergency situation.

Abstract Background The most common methods for measuring mobility in older adulthood include performance-based tests, such as the Timed-Up-and-Go and gait speed. While these measures have strong predictive validity for adverse outcomes, they are limited to assessing what older adults do in standardized settings, rather than what they do in their daily life. Life-space mobility, which is the ability to move within environments that expand from one’s home to the greater community, has been proposed as a more comprehensive measure of mobility. The aim of this study was to determine the association between modifiable factors and life-space mobility in older adults enrolled in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). Methods Life-space mobility was measured using the Life Space Index (LSI). Explanatory factors included physical, psychosocial and cognitive determinants, as well as pain, fatigue, driving status, nutrition, body mass index, smoking status, and vision. To estimate the association between the LSI and explanatory variables, univariate and multivariable ordinary least squares regression analyses were performed. Results All adults 65 years and older (n = 12,646) were included in the analysis. Fifty percent were women and the mean age was 73.0 (SD5.7). The mean LSI score was 80.5, indicating that, on average, the sample was able to move outside of their neighborhood independently. All explanatory variables were significantly associated with the LSI except for balance and memory. The top 3 variables that explained the most variation in the LSI were driving, social support and walking speed. Conclusion To our knowledge, this was the first study to examine the association between life-space mobility and a comprehensive set of modifiable factors that were selected based on a theoretical framework and existing research evidence. This study had two important messages. First, driving, social support and walking speed emerged as the most significant correlates of life-space mobility in older adults. Second, life-space mobility is multifactorial and interventions that are pragmatic in their design and testing are needed that consider the complexity involved. A multi-disciplinary approach to examining life-space mobility in older adults is needed to optimize opportunities for healthy aging and develop strategies that support mobility in older adulthood.

We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical and/or X-ray binary systems colocated with LAT sources also likely harbor gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to ≤11 known before Fermi. Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with six undetected in radio. Overall, ≥236 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power $\dot{E}$ decreases to its observed minimum near 10 ^33 erg s ^−1 , approaching the shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. The electronic catalog version provides gamma-ray pulsar ephemerides, properties, and fit results to guide and be compared with modeling results.

Objectives Computerised physician order entry (CPOE) systems facilitate the review of medication orders by pharmacists. Reports have emerged that show conception flaws or the misuse of CPOE systems generate prescribing errors. We aimed to characterise pharmacist interventions (PIs) triggered by prescribing errors identified as system-related errors (PISREs) in French hospitals.Design This was a cross-sectional observational study based on PIs prospectively documented in the Act-IP observatory database from January 2014 to December 2018.Setting PISREs from 319 French computerised healthcare facilities were analysed.Participants Among the 319 French hospitals, 232 (72.7%) performed SRE interventions, involving 652 (51%) pharmacists.Results Among the 331 678 PIs recorded, 27 058 were qualified as due to SREs (8.2%). The main drug-related problems associated with PISREs were supratherapeutic (27.5%) and subtherapeutic dosage (17.2%), non-conformity with guidelines/contraindications (22.4%) and improper administration (17.9%). The PI prescriber acceptation rate was 78.9% for SREs vs 67.6% for other types of errors. The PISRE ratio was estimated relative to the total number of PIs. The Walloon region of Belgium has launched a research project that aims at elaborating a methodology for automated, high-quality land cover mapping, based primarily on its yearly 0.25m orthophoto coverage. Whereas in urban areas an object-based (OBIA) approach has been the privileged path in the last years as it allows taking into account shape information relevant for the characterization of man-made constructions, such an approach has its limits in the rural and more natural areas due to increased difficulties for segmentation and less sharp boundaries, thus calling for a pixel-based approach. The project thus consists in developing a combination of methods, and to integrate their results through an ensemble fusion approach. As many of the more natural land cover classes have temporal profiles which cannot be detected in a one-date orthoimage, Sentinel 1 and 2 data are also included in order to take advantage of their higher spectral and temporal resolution. All methods are trained using existing regional databases. In a second step, we combine the different LC classification results by fusioning them into one high-accuracy (over 90% OA) product, using a series of different approaches ranging from rule-based to machine learning to the Dempster-Shafer method. The entire toolchain is based on free and open source software, mainly GRASS GIS and Orfeo ToolBox. Results indicate the importance of the quality of the individual classifications for the fusion results and justify the choice of combining OBIA and pixel-based approaches in order to avoid the pitfalls of each.

Introduction In First Episode Psychosis (FEP), Suicidal Behaviours (SB), Violent Behaviours (VB) and substance use are frequent respectively 10% to 30%, 34.5% and 50% (Pompili et al., 2011), (Tournier et al., 2013). The role of substance use in facilitating SB and VB is described (Large et al., 2011). Objectives We aim to evaluate the impact of substance use in FEP patients. Our hypothesis is that substance use is associated with more SB or VB before first admission. Methods First admission files of 45 patients diagnosed ICD10 F20 to F29 during the 2013-2018 period were retrospectively studied. SB, VB and substance use (Cannabis, alcohol and opiate/cocaine) before admission were collected. Correlation between SB and VB were tested with cannabis, alcohol, opiate/cocaine use with chi2 Pearson independance test. Results The frequencies of suicidal behaviours and violent behaviours were 25 % and 22.7 %. The frequencies of cannabis use, alcohol use, opiate/cocaine use were 56.1 %, 10 % and 16.3 %. A strong significant correlation was found between opiate/cocaine use and violent behaviour, p = 0.011 Chi2 was 6.471 DF 1. No other significant correlations were found. Conclusions Suicidal behaviours and violent behaviours are known to be more frequent in psychotic patients with addictive comorbidity. Our french rural hospital retrospective study confirms that violent behaviours in first admission psychotic patients are strongly associated with opiate/cocaine substance use comorbidity.

29th European Congress of Psychiatry (EPA 2021) „You can tell a good workman by his tools: The instruments of psychiatrists, psychologists and neurologists: Why so different?“ The term psychology („the study of the soul“) appeared for the first time in a printed book of Freigius in 1578, while the term neurology („the study of the form and function of the nervous system“) was coined by Willis in 1664 and that of psychiatry („the medical treatment of the soul“) by Reil in 1808. First physicians to devote entirely to neurology appeared in the midst of the 19th century in France, Germany, and England. Around this time neurology, (biological) psychiatry and (experimental) psychology converged to share similar roots in the brain. The three disciplines separated (again) at the beginning of the 20th century. Neurology remained for over 100 years mainly a diagnostic discipline, in which history and clinical examination were expected to lead to the identification of a topographic syndrome (or lesion) and eventually its etiology. In the last 30 years neurology underwent a revolution. While the importance (and validity) of phenotypical diagnoses remained, new (e.g. neuroimaging, genetic) tools have made precise diagnoses and causal treatments increasingly possible, transforming neurology into a treating discipline. The author will discuss why the separation between neurology, psychiatry and psychology is artificial (and even harmful for patients), how the multidimensional tools developed over the years by these disciplines can be of common interest, and what the EAN does to promote interdisciplinary scientific, educational, and political collaborations.
