Abstract

The Eocene Jahrum Formation in High Zagros was studied in Kuh-e- Soukhteh and North Gahrou sections (southwest of Shahrekord region, Chahar-mahal Bakhtiari Province). This formation, composed of limestone, marl, and dolomitic limestone (dolostone), accumulated on a marine platform within the Neo-Tethys ocean realm. It yields a rich foraminiferal fauna, in which three larger benthic foraminiferal assemblage zones were identified. Two assemblage zones in the North Gahrou section were correlated to the Ypresian and Bartonian, and one assemblage zone is represented in the Kuh-e- Soukhteh section and assigned to the Bartonian. In addition, three other groups of benthic foraminiferal associations have been identified based on test wall type (porcellaneous, agglutinate, hyaline) and paleogeographical significance. A discontinuity marked by a hiatus from Cuisian to Lutetian in the North Gahrou section was most probably due to a concealed fault. According to microscopic textures and distribution of benthic foraminifera and other components (peloids, intraclasts, etc.), a gentle depth gradient from the inner ramp to the proximal outer ramp may be reconstructed.

Abstract

The New Caledonia Ophiolite is cross-cut by coarse- to medium-grained pyroxenite and hornblende gabbro/diorite dykes intruded between 55.5 and 50 Ma (U–Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar hornblende), whereas the finer grained dolerites of tholeiitic affinity are younger (50–47 Ma). The production of hornblende gabbros/diorites was modelled by moderate degrees (20–40%) of partial melting of the high-temperature amphibolites of the metamorphic sole. The end-member compositions (hornblendites and anorthosites) resulted from solid-state phase segregation of crystal mushes within tectonically active magmatic conduits. Cascade reactions of the slab melts with mantle wedge peridotites successively formed clinoenstatite-bearing boninite magmas, which fed gabbronorite cumulate lenses at the mantle–crust transition; in turn, the clinoenstatite-bearing boninite melts reacted with peridotites to form websterites. The youngest magmas (of tholeiitic affinity) appeared c. 6 Myr after the inception of subduction when the cooler subducting slab plunged more steeply. Incipient slab retreat allowed corner flow, triggering low-pressure hydrous melting of the uplifted asthenosphere. The early stages of forearc magmatism were closely associated with transcurrent shear zones, which recorded oblique subduction inception. The early Eocene tectonic and magmatic features of the New Caledonia Ophiolite provide evidence for a north- or NE-dipping hot (forced) subduction zone in the SW Pacific, notably distinct from the slightly younger west-dipping Izu-Bonin–Marianna cold (spontaneous) subduction system. Abstract

Aim: Although New Caledonia (NC) is now considered an oceanic island that emerged ca. 60 Ma, a few terrestrial clades are significantly older, raising the question of the origin of these groups. Classically, old lineages on more recent islands are hypothesized to originate through a process of hopping on now‐vanished islands (i.e., island‐hopping hypothesis) or other territories. We aim to test this hypothesis by studying a group of cockroaches with several lineages found in NC. Location: New Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia. Taxon: Insects: Blattodea. Methods: We generated a dated phylogeny for blattid cockroaches (Blattidae and Tryonicidae) using Bayesian inference along with fossil calibrations. We reviewed studies on the palaeogeography of the Southwest Pacific region, including hypotheses about the existence of yet‐to‐be‐discovered past islands, and constructed biogeographical tests accordingly. We computed ancestral area estimation under different models in BioGeoBEARS (DEC, BAYAREALIKE, DIVALIKE, with or without +J) to test the role of an island‐hopping hypothesis in the establishment of NC blattid fauna. Results: We find divergence times older than 60 Ma for two NC clades. We show that these 'old' endemic lineages can partially be explained by indirect dispersal from Australia or New Zealand through now disappeared islands. Alternative hypotheses suggest multiple independent colonizations of NC from Antarctica or Australia. Main Conclusions: Our results indicate that island‐hopping may explain the presence of old groups in NC. The island‐hopping hypothesis is nonetheless only supported for a period‐area from which geological evidence is ambiguous. Our work highlights both the fruitful interactions between geology and biogeography and the underlying difficulties. Abstract

International audience; The structural analysis of the metamorphic belt and allochthonous terranes, which represent the lower and upper plates of the Eocene subduction/obduction complex of New Caledonia respectively, unravels a multi-step evolution. At subduction inception, the originally N-S trending northern Norfolk/New Caledonia Ridge was moving northward as recorded by sheared lower Eocene dykes of the Peridotite Nappe. Fast exhumation of the fore-arc mantle in transtensional conditions was recorded by the injection of fore-arc magmas through fast-cooling peridotites, followed by the occurrence of antigorite- and tremolite-bearing crack seals in small-scale transcurrent or oblique-slip faults. Meanwhile, slices of the oceanic crust of the lower plate were scrapped off and accumulated in the fore-arc region while some elements were dragged down into the subduction zone and contributed to the formation of eclogite facies mélange. When the tip of the New Caledonia Ridge reached the trench, it progressively jammed the subduction. Meanwhile, the oblique slip and coeval rotation of the arc due to the opening of the north Loyalty back-arc basin provoked the dextral transcurrent folding of already accreted ocean crust slices and metamorphic units on the course of exhumation. Bulk counterclockwise rotation of 56° ± 5° was recorded in the foreland basin by paleomagnetic data of sediments from the 45–35 Ma time interval. The final obduction of fore-arc peridotites occurred with top-to-the-SW kinematics when the island had already reached its present orientation.

Abstract

International audience; The ophiolite of New Caledonia (Southwest Pacific), known as the Peridotite Nappe, has been subject to tropical weathering since its emersion during the Oligocene. Silica veins at the base of the weathering profile and magnesite veins along the serpentine sole structurally ≈ 400 – 800 m beneath the laterites are attributed to downward infiltration of meteoric waters enriched in dissolved atmospheric CO2, carrying Mg and Si released by lateritization of the peridotite. The O and C isotope composition of magnesite and the O isotope composition of silica veins confirm this model. Clumped isotope thermometry on magnesite veins (Δ47) coupled with routine O and C stable isotope data are consistent with low-temperature precipitation of magnesite (26°C - 42°C). On the other hand, temperatures of quartz formation (40°C – 95°C) are higher than expected for a lateritization process. Heat released by exothermic serpentinization and/or ascent of fluids from the serpentine sole are required to explain this difference. These results and discussion are presented in Quesnel et al. (2013), Quesnel et al. (2016), Cathelineau et al. (2017). Locally, listvenites of the serpentinite sole contain a variety of silica phases associated with magnesite. These rocks have low δ18OMgs values (19.5 to 22‰) compared to meteoric-derived magnesite veins (27.5 to 30‰), a feature that suggests the involvement of deep-seated fluids. The δ18O values of quartz span a large range of values, some of which are lower than those of quartz from the weathering profile. The homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions within a hydrothermal quartz vein have a consistent range from 145 to 225°C. Listvenites are thus likely related to the upward circulation of deep-seated fluids perhaps during the nappe emplacement (late Eocene – early Oligocene) or in association with granitic magmatism (Oligocene). The oxygen isotope compositions of magnesite and quartz thus record a variety of conditions, which relate to the evolution of Peridotite Nappe, including obduction, magmatism and lateritization.

Abstract

The Poya Terrane of New Caledonia is a composite lithotectonic unit made of i) Campanian-Paleocene E-MORB and BABB-type basalts and abyssal argillite (Poya Terrane Basalts); and ii) Coniacian-Santonian sandstone, turbidites and abyssal argillite (Kone Facies) intruded by Early Eocene E-MORB sills. Remapping reveals that the Kone Facies is more extensive than previously thought. Petrography and detrital zircons provenance show that Kone Facies sediments have the same provenance as coeval autochthonous sediments, albeit with more abundant contemporaneous zircons. They accumulated on the eastern continental slope of the Norfolk Ridge, and eventually mixed with abyssal argillite. Temporally, sill emplacement is related to subduction inception at ca. 56 Ma. We postulate that either: i) E-MORB intrusion was related to transcurrent thinning of the down going plate; or, ii) the “enriched” (off axis?) partial melt zone of the ancient ridge swept the lower plate, generating E-MORBs in the upper crust, and sills in passive margin sediments before it became extinct. Sliced marginal basin upper crust, and thereafter passive margin sediments and associated dolerites were obliquely accreted to the fore-arc, and partially subducted and recrystallized into the blueschist facies. The Poya Terrane was eventually thrust onto the Norfolk Ridge and its debris fed mid- to Late Eocene syntectonic basins. Meanwhile, mafic portions of the Poya Terrane were subducted and recrystallized into the eclogite facies, mixed with serpentinite to form the Pouebo mélange, and were exhumed in the fore-arc region. Finally, Late Oligocene faulting and hydrothermal events overprinted the NE part of the terrane.

Abstract

The OCBIL theory comprises a set of hypotheses to comprehend the biota of old, climatically buffered, infertile landscapes (OCBILs). Here, we review evidence from the literature to evaluate the extent to which this theory could apply to the biodiversity hotspot of New Caledonia. We present geological, pedological and climatic evidence suggesting how the island might qualify as an OCBIL. The predictions of OCBIL theory are then reviewed in the context of New Caledonia. There is evidence for a high rate of micro-endemism, accumulation of relict lineages, a high incidence of dioecy, myrmecochory and nutritional specializations in plants. New Caledonian vegetation also exhibits several types of monodominant formations that reveal the importance of disturbances on the island. Fires and tropical storms are likely to be important factors that contribute to the dynamic of New Caledonian ecosystems. Although naturally infertile, there is archaeological evidence that humans developed specific horticultural practices in the ultramafic landscapes of New Caledonia. Further comparisons between New Caledonia and other areas of the world, such as South Africa and Southwest Australia, are desirable, to develop the OCBIL theory into a more robust and generalized, testable framework and to determine the most efficient strategies to preserve their outstanding biodiversity. Abstract

The island of New Caledonia is the second largest rock exposure of the continent Zealandia. The New Caledonian basement rocks have been interpreted as representing a late Paleozoic to Mesozoic intra-oceanic arc system that was possibly correlative to contemporaneous terranes in eastern Australia and New Zealand. In order to understand tectonic relationships between the basement rocks of New Caledonia and other eastern Gondwanan terranes, we obtained >2200 new U-Pb ages of detrital zircon grains from New Caledonia. Our new results, combined with a synthesis of previously published geochronological data, show abundant pre-Mesozoic zircon ages, but an absence of Early Permian to Middle Triassic ages characteristic of eastern Gondwana magmatism. The results thus suggest that the detritus of the New Caledonian basement was derived from a local Paleozoic continental fragment that was rifted from the margin of Gondwana, most likely in the Early Permian. The results imply that dispersal of the Gondwanan margins started earlier than the Late Cretaceous opening of the Tasman and Coral seas, consistent with the Mesozoic endemism of both New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Abstract

Le programme « Fonctionnement des petits bassins versant miniers » avait pour objectifs d'améliorer la compréhension du fonctionnement hydrologique et sédimentaire des petits bassins versants miniers, et d'apporter une base de connaissances sur la problématique posée de la quantification et de la qualification des flux liquides et solides issus des petits bassins versants miniers néo-calédoniens. Toutes les modélisations effectuées ont pour finalité de mettre à disposition des mineurs des outils leur permettant de connaître l’efficacité de leurs plans de gestion des eaux et d’affiner le dimensionnement des ouvrages.- Ce volume II compile l’ensemble des contributions pluridisciplinaires des différents partenaires du consortium scientifique sous forme de rapports thématiques. Il complète la synthèse des résultats du programme (Volume I).- A la suite de ces travaux, un guide méthodologique pour le "suivi hydrologique et sédimentaire des petits bassins versants miniers de Nouvelle-Calédonie" a également été édité.

Abstract

Le programme « Fonctionnement des petits bassins versant miniers » a fait l’objet d’unerestitution publique le 2 Décembre 2014. Parallèlement à cette restitution, un rapportscientifique a été produit, regroupant l’ensemble des contributions des différentspartenaires du consortium scientifique. Le lecteur de la présente synthèse pourrautilement s’y référer pour obtenir les éléments d’information dont il pourrait avoir besoin pourcompléter ceux qui vont être présentés dans ce rapport, sous un format volontairementréduit.L’objectif du présent document est de présenter à l’attention prioritaire de la professionet des services techniques des collectivités, les résultats essentiels que l’on peutdégager des efforts de recherche réalisés dans le cadre du programme, les avancéesobtenues, mais aussi les difficultés rencontrées et les actions restant à produire pourconforter les acquis du programme. Le formalisme propre aux publications scientifiquessera donc volontairement réduit et la présentation ne se veut pas exhaustive desrésultats produits par le programme. Elle gomme volontairement la majeure partie desdéveloppements méthodologiques et les raisonnements scientifiques qui seront à rechercherdans le rapport détaillé.Le rapport de synthèse est articulé en deux volets principaux :• Le premier est consacré à la présentation générale du programme, de ses acteurs, deleurs rôles respectifs, des zones étudiées et du planning des études tel qu’il a étécontractualisé ;• Le second décrit les résultats essentiels regroupés sous quatre rubriques : l’hydrologieminière, les modélisations, le programme de transfert et de formation, et les autresrésultats.Un court chapitre de conclusion s’efforcera de faire le bilan du programme en précisant lesdifficultés rencontrées et les pistes conseillées pour tirer un maximum de profits des résultatsengrangés.
