Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions cause significant impacts on the environment and must therefore be controlled even more stringently. This requires the development of cost-effective removal strategies which simultaneously create value-added by-products or energy from the waste. This study aims to treat gaseous nitric oxide (NO) by hollow-fibre membrane biofilm reactor (HFMBfR) in the presence of nitrite (NO2-) and evaluate nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions formed as an intermediate product during the denitrification process. Accumulated N2O can be utilised in methane oxidation as an oxidant to produce energy. In the first stage of the study, the HFMBfR was operated by feeding only gaseous NO as the nitrogen source. During this period, the best performance was achieved with 92% NO removal efficiency (RE). In the second stage, both NO gas and NO2- were supplied to the system, and 91% NO and 99% NO2- reduction were achieved simultaneously with the maximum N2O generation of 386 +/- 31 ppm. Lower influent carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios, such as 4.5 and 2.0, and higher NO2- -N loading rate of 158 mg N day(-1) favoured N2O generation. An improved NO removal rate and N2O accumulation were seen with the increasing amount of PO43- in the medium. The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that Alicycliphilus denitrificans and Pseudomonas putida were the dominant species. The study shows that an HFMBfR can be successfully used to eliminate both NO2- and gaseous NO and simultaneously generate N2O by adjusting the system parameters such as C/N ratio, NO2- and PO43- loading.

Bu çalışma, baca gazı emisyonlarındaki azot oksit (NO) kirliliğinin giderilmesi için biyolojik bir hava kirliliği kontrol teknolojisinin geliştirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Arıtma teknolojisi, NO'nun yüksek kütle transfer verimine sahip içi boşluklu lif membran biyofilm reaktör (HFMB) kullanılarak biyolojik denitrifikasyon ile azot gazına indirgenmesine dayanmaktadır. Bu amaçla iki farklı membran malzemesi kullanılarak hazırlanan biyoreaktörlerde NO giderimi araştırılmıştır. Çalışmanın ilk kısmında mikro gözenekli PVDF membran, NO ile bağ yaptığı bilinen demir porfirin ile modifiye edilerek reaktörde kullanılmıştır. Bu sayede, NO içi boşluklu lif membran içerisinden dışarıdaki biyofilm ve suya doğru transfer olurken demir porfirin ile yapacağı bağ yardımıyla reaktörde kalış süresi arttırılacaktır. Modifiye edilen membran yüzeyi temas açısı ölçer, FTIR, SEM, EDS ve XPS teknikleri kullanılarak karakterize edilmiştir. Maksimum verim modifiye edilmiş PVDF ile %97.7, modifiye edilmemiş PVDF membran biyofilm reaktörde ise %86.3 olarak elde edilmiştir. 403.1 mg/m2·gün NO giriş yükleme hızlarında porfirin modifiyeli PVDF membrane biyofilm reaktör, NO giderim hızını 348 mg NO/m2·gün'den 372.1 mg NO/m2·gün'e arttırmıştır. 16S rRNA tür analizi sonucunda reaktör içerisinde Dysgonomonas gadei'nin baskın bir tür olduğu gözlenmiştir.İkinci aşamada ise gözeneksiz PDMS membran kullanılarak farklı gaz işletme şartlarında membran biyofilm reaktörün NO giderim performansı incelenmiştir. Membran biyofilm reaktörler açık uçlu ya da kapalı uçlu olarak işletilebilmektedir. Bu çalışmada membran biyofilm reaktörün kesikli olarak açık uç, kapalı uç şeklinde dönüştürülerek biyolojik NO denitrifikasyonunda kullanılması için önerilmiştir. Maksimum giderim verimi %91 ve giderim hızı 40 mg NO/m2·gün olarak elde edilmiştir. Reaktörün gaz besleme modu sürekli açık uçlu işletilmesi yerine kesikli olarak açık uç/kapalı uç şeklinde değiştirildiğinde giderim verimine %51 oranında katkı sağladığı görülmüştür. This dissertation aims to develop a new biological air pollution control technology for the treatment of NO in flue gases. The technology based on biological reduction of NO to nitrogen in a hollow fiber membrane biofilm reactor (HFMB) which provides higher mass transfer efficiency. In this dissertation, NO removal performance of HFMB designed with two different membrane materials was investigated. In the first part of the study, microporous PVDF membrane modified with iron-porphyrin, which has high affinity to NO, was used in the reactor. Thus, the retention time of NO during diffusion from lumen of the hollow fiber towards biofilm and liquid side can be increased in the reactor via binding to iron-porphyrin. Surface of the modified membrane was characterized by contact angle goniometer, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and XPS. The maximum removal efficiency of modified PVDF and unmodified PVDF based HFMB was achieved as 97.7% and 86.3%, respectively. Porphyrin modified PVDF based HFMB increased the elimination capacity from 348 mg NO/m2·day to 372.1 mg NO/m2·day at an inlet NO loading rate of 403.1 mg/m2·day. As a result of 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, Dysgonomonas gadei was observed as the most predominant species in the reactor.In the second part of the study, non-porous PDMS mebrane was used to investigate NO removal performance of HFMB under different gas supplying mode. Membrane biofilm reactor can be operated in open-end and closed-end gas supplying mode. In this study, periodic change of gas supplying mode from open-end to closed-end of HFMB for NO denitrification was suggested. The maximum removal efficiency was achieved as 91% with an elimination capacity of 40 mg NO/m2·day. The change in gas supplying strategy from continous open-end mode to periodical open-end/closed-end mode enhanced the removal efficiency an additional 51%. 109
