Coastal regions are sectors where human activities impact the marine ecosystem, and if necessary control measures are not taken, they can generate negative consequences for health and ecosystem services. Within the framework of the Pampa Azul initiative and under the One Health paradigm, the interconnection between the terrestrial and marine environments of the San Jorge Gulf and the adjacent north coast has been studied. In November, 2022, a campaign was carried out aboard the R/V "Mar Argentino" at thirty-four stations near the coast. There, for the first time, simultaneously with in-situ measurements of physical variables, macronutrients (NO 3 - , PO 4 -3 , Si(OH) 4 and NH 4 + ), particulate silica (BSi and LSi), trace metals in the particulate material (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe and Pb) and the phytoplankton community were analyzed. The results showed a high nutrient dynamic, with a significant influence of natural stratification and anthropogenic condition due to the discharge of effluents off the cities of Comodoro Rivadavia and Caleta Olivia. Under natural conditions, NO 3 - and Si(OH) 4 limited the surface primary production by 47 % and 41 %, respectively. Additionally, due to the anthropogenic contribution, NH 4 + concentration reached 3 μM, increasing the proliferation of nanophytoplankton, among other consequences. As a result of nutrient dynamics, the uptake of Si(OH) 4 , the growth rate of diatoms and their production of BSi were decoupled. Furthermore, a significant correlation between LSi and Fe in particulate matter was evidenced, opening new lines of research that relate dust storms to primary productivity in this marine environment. The 2023 Annual Symposium of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles hosted opportunities for researchers, scientists, and policy makers to reflect on the state of art of predicting fish distributions and consider the implications to the marine and aquatic environments of a changing climate. The outcome of one special interest group at the Symposium was a collection of questions, organized under five themes, which begin to capture the state of the field and identify priorities for research and management over the coming years. The five themes were Physiology, Mechanisms, Detect and Measure, Manage, and Wider Ecosystems. The questions, 25 of them, addressed concepts which remain poorly understood, are data deficient, and/or are likely to be impacted in measurable or profound ways by climate change. Moving from the first to the last theme, the questions expanded in the scope of their considerations, from specific processes within the individual to ecosystem-wide impacts, but no one question is bigger than any other: each is important in detecting, understanding, and predicting fish distributions, and each will be impacted by an aspect of climate change. In this way, our questions, particularly those concerning unknown mechanisms and data deficiencies, aimed to offer a guide to other researchers, managers, and policy makers in the prioritization of future work as a changing climate is expected to have complex and disperse impacts on fish populations and distributions that will require a coordinated effort to address., (© 2024 Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Southern right whales (SRWs, Eubalaena australis) have been observed feeding both at and below the surface (< 10 m) in Golfo Nuevo (42°42' S, 64°30' W), Península Valdés, Argentina, an area traditionally recognized as calving ground. In addition, we documented diving feeding behavior in SRWs during their stay in this gulf, which has not been previously described. We assessed this behavior using suction-cup-attached video-imaging tags (CRITTERCAMs) on individual whales. A total of eight CRITTERCAM deployments were successful, and feeding events were documented in all SRWs successfully equipped with CRITTERCAMs. The highest speeds occurred during the ascent phase, and the average diving time was 6 min 45 s ± 3 min 41 s for SRWs. Concurrently, zooplankton samples were collected from the subsurface and bottom of the water in areas where tagged whales dived to assess differences in composition, abundance, and biomass. Copepods dominated the upper layer, while euphausiids were more abundant in the deeper sample. Furthermore, zooplankton total biomass was five times higher at depth (2515.93 mg/m 3 ) compared to the subsurface (500.35 mg/m 3 ). Differences in zooplankton characteristics between depths, combined with CRITTERCAM videos, indicated that SRWs exploit high concentrations of organisms near the seafloor during daytime feeding dives. This study summarizes the concentration in dry weight (dw) of several metal(oid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn), as well as the abundance and characteristics of microplastics (MP) in wet weight (ww) of the soft tissues of clam Corbicula fluminea from Chubut River (Patagonia, Argentina). The contents of essential elements were in the following decreasing order: Zn > Mn > Cu > Ni; meanwhile, non-essential elements Cd, Cr and Pb were below the detection limit (<0.5 μg/g dw). A high mean concentration of As (6.1 ± 0.3 μg/g dw) was found, surpassing the maximum allowable limit established by the Argentine Food Code for bivalve molluscs. The number of MP ranged from 0.07 to 1.27 items/ind. and from 0.2 to 2.9 items/g ww. Fibers were the most common shape, mainly transparent. The size of MP ranged from 42 to 1917 μm, accounting for 62 % of MP between 50 and 450 μm. The dominant polymer was PET based on the results of Raman spectroscopy. Based on the widespread distribution of MP in the environment and the wide range of effects on organisms, it is necessary to develop long-term monitoring programs for MP contamination in different environmental matrices. Understanding the bioaccumulation of MP in bivalves is crucial to assess the potential risk to human health through consumption and to the ecosystem. Since the first introduction from North America more than a century ago, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have rapidly established self-sustaining populations in major river basins of Patagonia. Many generations later, only the freshwater resident life history is expressed in the Chubut and Negro rivers of northern Argentinian Patagonia, whereas both the resident and anadromous life histories are found in the Santa Cruz River of southern Argentina. Despite previous studies that have tried to identify the sources of these introduced populations, uncertainty still exists. Here we combined data from many single-nucleotide polymorphisms and microsatellite loci in O. mykiss populations from Argentina and North America to evaluate putative source populations, gene flow between Argentinian river basins, and genetic diversity differences between Argentinian and North American populations. We found that populations from northern and southern Patagonia are highly differentiated and have limited gene flow between them. Phylogeographic analysis also confirmed that they have separate origins, with the northern populations most closely related to the domesticated rainbow trout strains that are raised worldwide and the Santa Cruz River populations most closely related to North American populations from California and Oregon that have an anadromous component. In addition, fish with different life histories in the Santa Cruz River were found to constitute a single interbreeding population. No evidence was found of reduced genetic variation in introduced rainbow trout, suggesting multiple contributing sources. The increasing human population and associated urban waste pose a significant threat to wildlife. Our study focused on the Kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), known for opportunistic feeding in anthropogenic areas, particularly urban landfills. We assessed the physiological status of Kelp gulls at a landfill and compared it with gulls from a protected natural site. Results indicate that gulls from the anthropogenic site exhibited lower levels of key physiological parameters linked to diet, including triglycerides, total proteins, uric acid, plasmatic enzyme activity, body condition index, and leukocyte count, in comparison to their counterparts from the natural site. How Antarctic species are facing historical and new stressors remains under-surveyed and risks to wildlife are still largely unknown. Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae are well-known bioindicators and sentinels of Antarctic ecosystem changes, a true canary in the coal mine. Immuno-haematological parameters have been proved to detect stress in wild animals, given their rapid physiological response that allows them tracking environmental changes and thus inferring habitat quality. Here, we investigated variation in Erythrocyte Nuclear Abnormalities (ENAs) and White Blood Cells (WBCs) in penguins from three clustered colonies in the Ross Sea, evaluating immuno-haematological parameters according to geography, breeding stage, and individual penguin characteristics such as sex, body condition and nest quality. Concentrations of mercury (Hg) and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (as proxies of the penguin's trophic ecology) were analysed in feathers to investigate the association between stress biomarkers and Hg contamination in Adélie penguins. Colony and breeding stage were not supported as predictors of immuno-haematological parameters. ENAs and WBCs were respectively ∼30 % and ∼20 % higher in male than in female penguins. Body condition influenced WBCs, with penguins in the best condition having a ∼22 % higher level of WBCs than those in the worst condition. Nest position affected the proportion of micronuclei (MNs), with inner-nesting penguins having more than three times the proportion of MNs than penguins nesting in peripheral positions. Heterophils:Lymphocytes (H:L) ratio was not affected by any of the above predictors. Organotin compounds are persistent pollutants and are considered chemicals of high environmental concern. In the present study, the distribution and degradation of tributyltin were evaluated in field sediments and through an ex situ experiment. For this, sediment samples from two locations were analysed: Luis Piedrabuena Harbour, with higher maritime traffic, and Cerro Avanzado, which receives less impact from anthropogenic activities. The results indicated that pollution levels at Luis Piedrabuena Harbour have decreased compared with studies performed 9 years ago for the same area. On the contrary, traces of organotin compounds have been found for the first time at Cerro Avanzado. Moreover, the butyltin degradation index indicated that organotin compounds undergo an advanced degradation process in the collected samples at both sites. Ex situ experiments revealed a limited capacity of sediments to retain tributyltin, and suggested an active role of bioturbation activity in the degradation of these compounds. This study investigates the effects of different inorganic arsenic (As III) concentrations (0, 125, 500 and 1000 μg As/L) following two exposure times (7 and 14 days) on gills, digestive gland and muscle of scallop Aequipecten tehuelchus from Patagonia, Argentina. A biochemical approach was used to investigate oxidative stress-related parameters after different As concentrations and exposure times. Although the accumulation of As was of the same order of magnitude in all tissues, the results showed distinct tissue-specific oxidative responses to this metalloid. Furthermore, the variation in exposure time had no significant effect on As accumulation in any of the three tissues. In gills, despite no reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) were detected, there was an increase in catalase (CAT) activity and metallothionein (MT) levels. Conversely, digestive gland showed RONS production without a rise in CAT and glutathione S-transferases (GST) activities, but with an increase in MT levels. In muscle, RONS production and CAT activity kept constant or decreased, while MT levels remained unchanged. In addition, exposure time demonstrated its critical role in gills by influencing the response of CAT, GST and MT, particularly at high As concentrations, while exposure time did not affect the biochemical stress parameters in the digestive gland and muscle. Interestingly, neither concentration of As produced lipid damage, showing the effectiveness of the antioxidant mechanisms to avoid it. These results emphasize that A. tehuelchus exhibited no time-dependent effects in response to As exposure, while showing tissue-specific responses characterized by significant concentration-dependent effects of As. This study provides a comprehensive insight by considering the combined effects of time and concentration of a contaminant and distinguishing its effects on specific tissues, a dimension often overlooked in the existing literature. Marine pollution is considered a current driver of change in the oceans and despite the urgency to develop more studies, there is limited information in the southern hemisphere. This study aimed to analyze the levels and profiles of natural (MeO-PBDEs) and anthropogenic (BFRs: PBDEs, HBB, PBEB) organic brominated compounds in adipose tissue of two species of dolphins with different distribution and trophic requirements from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean; the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei). In addition, we aim to investigate maternal transfer and biological pattern relationship (sex, age, sexual maturity) in short-beaked common dolphin bioaccumulation. The levels of both groups of contaminants were in the same order of magnitude as those reported for other marine mammals on both a regional and global scale. BFRs profiles were dominated by BDE 28 and BDE 47 in short-beaked common dolphin and Fraser's dolphin, respectively, whereas 2-MeO-BDE 68 was the most abundant natural compound in both species. Evidence of maternal transfer, temporary increase in BDE 154 levels and no influence of sex, age, or sexual maturity on brominated compound concentration was observed in short-beaked common dolphin. This study fills a gap in the knowledge of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean providing new information on emerging organic pollutants bioavailability for dolphins and, therefore, for the different trophic webs. According to life-history theory, limited resources can result in trade-offs between costly physiological functions. Particularly, it can be expected that individuals present lower immune function, or an alternative immunological strategy, during their reproductive compared to their non-reproductive season. Here we investigate the link between reproduction and immunity in two sympatric marine fish species, the rockfish Sebastes oculatus and the sandperch Pinguipes brasilianus. The results showed lower values of total white blood cells and spleen index, but higher levels of natural antibodies (only in females) in reproductive rockfish compared to non-reproductive ones. On the other hand, reproductively active sandperch showed lower levels of natural antibodies and a higher neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and spleen index (only in males), compared to non-reproductive ones. Also, negative correlations between reproductive and immune parameters were observed in female rockfish at the individual level, but not in sandperch. Our results are consistent with the presence of different immunological strategies in reproductive and non-reproductive periods, with patterns that appear to be species-specific. This specificity suggests that various aspects of immunity might respond differentially to resource limitation, which could be associated with the disparate life-history strategies of the studied species. Alternatively, though not exclusively, the observed patterns could be driven by abiotic factors that characterize the reproductive season of each species (i.e., winter for rockfish, summer for sandperch). The effects of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella were investigated on growth, survival, and histopathology in larvae and spat of the Tehuelche scallop Aequipecten tehuelchus from Patagonia, Argentina. The study consisted of laboratory incubations of scallop larvae/spat with A. catenella, using environmentally realistic abundances of the dinoflagellate. Survival, growth, and histopathological effects were documented for scallop larvae/spat before, during, and after 7-day-long exposure to A. catenella. The scallops were grouped in flasks containing 0 (control), 20, 200, and 2000 cells mL -1 of A. catenella. The presence of A. catenella induced reduced larvae survival after 24 h, whereas a clear effect was observed after 3 days (survival of control larvae 95%, 72, and 79% for 20 and 200 cells mL -1 , respectively, and 43% for 2000 cells mL -1 ). The growth rates of the control larvae and those exposed to 20 mL -1  cells were significantly different from zero. Histopathological effects (melanization, loss of connective tissue, necrosis, and inflammatory responses) were observed in spat exposed to A. catenella. These effects were more pronounced at the highest dinoflagellate concentration. The search for plants with a high capacity to tolerate and accumulate metals is an important issue in phytoremediation. In this sense, this study was conducted in the halophyte Atriplex vulgatissima to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of lead (Pb, 50 and 100 μM) or zinc (Zn, 100 and 200 μM) on morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters as well as the accumulation patterns of this species. The results indicated that while essential metal Zn showed high translocation from roots to shoots (TF > 1), non-essential Pb was mainly accumulated in the roots (BCF>1). Regarding shape, both metals induced slenderness of the blade, but only Zn treatment reduced leaf size. No difference in biomass production and photosynthetic parameters was found between Pb and Zn treatments. Pb treatments did not show significant differences between treatments regarding water content (WC), pigment concentration, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPx), but did result in a decrease in catalase activity at 100 μM Pb. On the other hand, 200 μM Zn leads to a clear reduction in WC and pigment concentrations, along with an increase in SOD and GPx activities. In addition, ascorbate peroxidase (APx) activity showed a hormesis effect at 50 μM Pb and 100 μM Zn. Malondialdehyde increased with both Pb and Zn treatments. The integrated biological index (IBRv2) indicated that 200 μM Zn was the most affected treatment (IBRv2 = 19.02) and that under the same concentrations of metals (100 μM Pb or Zn), Pb treatments presented major stress (IBRv2 = 11.55). A. vulgatissima is a metallophyte with the potential for Pb phytostabilization and Zn phytoextraction, as well as a bioindicator of these metals. This paper explores the ethical considerations surrounding research on echinoderms, a group of invertebrates that has recently garnered attention in the scientific community. The importance of responsible animal handling and the need for an ethical framework that encompasses echinoderms are emphasized. The 3Rs principle, advocating for the replacement of conscious living vertebrates with non-sentient material in research, is discussed as a guiding tool in current animal research practices. As invertebrates are generally classified as non-sentient animals, the replacement dimension tends to favor them as prevalent models in experimental research. While it currently lacks the means to assess the mental states of invertebrates, there is undeniable evidence of social behavior in many species, suggesting that a lack of interactions with these organisms could potentially adversely affect their wellbeing. In the last few years, considerable progress has been made in developing an ethical framework that takes invertebrates into account, particularly cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms. In this context, we discuss the development of a broader conceptual framework of 5Rs that includes responsibility and respect, which may guide practices ensuring welfare in echinoderms, even in the absence of any particular normative.

The influence of the phytoplankton community in the light absorption budget was quantified in coastal waters of the North region of the San Jorge Gulf (Argentinian Patagonia). The phytoplanktonic composition and their absorption spectra were determined. Nanoflagellates and diatoms were the dominant groups. The toxigenic dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata was recorded in all the sampling sites. The optical characterization of the particulate material showed that 60 % of the absorption at 443 nm and 88 % of absorption at 675 nm was due to phytoplankton. The contributions of phytoplankton to total absorption at 443 nm wavelengths reached 50 %. The absorption by chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and non-algal particles (NAP) was predominant in turbulent waters (>60 %). This study shows the influence of submesoscale physical-biological interactions in the light absorption budget. In coastal wetlands the hydrological dynamics and in particular the groundwater flows play a critical role in the establishment of wetlands and in the transport of salts and nutrients. The aim of the work is to analyze the role that groundwater discharge has in the dynamics of the dissolved nutrients of the wetland associated with the coastal lagoon and marshes of the Punta Rasa Natural Reserve, which is located on the coastal sector of the southern end of the Río de la Plata estuary. A monitoring network in the form of transects was generated in order to define groundwater flows and take samples of dissolved species of N and P. The presence of sandy sediments with similar granulometric profiles in all geomorphological environments determines that the underground flow occurs in a homogeneous aquifer. From the dunes and beach ridges the fresh to brackish groundwater flows with a very low hydraulic gradient towards the marsh and coastal lagoon. The contributions of N and P would derive from the degradation of the organic matter of the environment, in the case of the marsh and coastal lagoon also from the tidal flow and discharge of groundwater, and possibly from atmospheric sources in the case of N. Since in all environments oxidizing conditions dominate, nitrification is the main process which is why the most abundant species of N is the NO 3 - . Under oxidizing conditions, P has a greater affinity for the sediments in which it is mostly retained, registering it in low concentrations in water. The discharge of groundwater from the dunes and beach ridges provides dissolved nutrients to the marsh and coastal lagoon. The wax ester (WE) and triacylglycerol (TAG) biosynthetic potential of marine microorganisms is poorly understood at the microbial community level. The goal of this work was to uncover the prevalence and diversity of bacteria with the potential to synthesize these neutral lipids in coastal sediments of two high latitude environments, and to characterize the gene clusters related to this process. Homolog sequences of the key enzyme, the wax ester synthase/acyl-CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase (WS/DGAT) were retrieved from 13 metagenomes, including subtidal and intertidal sediments of a Subantarctic environment (Ushuaia Bay, Argentina), and subtidal sediments of an Antarctic environment (Potter Cove, Antarctica). The abundance of WS/DGAT homolog sequences in the sediment metagenomes was 1.23 ± 0.42 times the abundance of 12 single-copy genes encoding ribosomal proteins, higher than in seawater (0.13 ± 0.31 times in 338 metagenomes). Homolog sequences were highly diverse, and were assigned to the Pseudomonadota, Actinomycetota, Bacteroidota and Acidobacteriota phyla. The genomic context of WS/DGAT homologs included sequences related to WE and TAG biosynthesis pathways, as well as to other related pathways such as fatty-acid metabolism, suggesting carbon recycling might drive the flux to neutral lipid synthesis. This is the first research that extensively compiles all the available scientific literature on the presence of trace metals (TMs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and plastic debris in Chondrichthyan species inhabiting South America (including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans), providing an insight into Chondrichthyans as bioindicators of pollutants as well as the impacts of pollutant exposure on the organisms. Seventy-three studies were published in South America between 1986 and 2022. While 68.5% focused on TMs, 17.8% on POPs, and 9.6% on plastic debris. Brazil and Argentina were at the top in terms of the number of publications; however, there is an absence of information regarding pollutants for Chondrichthyans in Venezuela, Guyana, and French Guiana. Of the 65 Chondrichthyan species reported, 98.5% belong to the Elasmobranch group, and 1.5% from the Holocephalans. Most studies focused on Chondrichthyans of economic importance, and the most analyzed organs were the muscle and liver. There is a lack of studies on Chondrichthyan species with low economic value and critical conservation status. Due to their ecological relevance, distribution, accessibility, high trophic position, capacity to accumulate high levels of pollutants, and the number of studies published, Prionace glauca and Mustelus schmitii seem to be adequate to serve as bioindicators. For TMs, POPs, and plastic debris there is a lack of studies focusing on the pollutant levels as well as their effect on Chondrichthyans. Accumulating reports of negative impacts of tourist activities on wildlife emphasize the importance of closely monitoring focal populations. Although some effects are readily noticed, more subtle ones such as changes in physiological functions of individuals might go overlooked. Based on evidence of altered physiology associated with ecotourism on Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus, here we performed an integrated assessment using a diverse physiological toolkit together with more traditional fitness-related measures to better understand mechanisms and potential consequences. Chicks exposed to tourism showed altered immune parameters and elevated flea prevalence, reinforcing previous findings. Tourism-exposed female, but not male, chicks also showed relatively lower hematocrit and plasma protein levels, providing evidence consistent with a sex-specific response to tourist visitation. Physiological alterations detected in tourism-exposed young chicks (week 1-2) were maintained and the effect on flea infestation increased during the study period (week 4-5 of post-hatch). Despite the effects on physiology, these did not seem to translate into immediate fitness costs. No detectable tourism effects were found on brood sex ratios, chick growth and body condition, and survival until week 5-6 post-hatch. We detected no effects on reproductive output and only a marginal effect on nest survival during incubation despite previous reports of tourism-associated alterations in stress indices of adults. This disconnection could result if the physiological changes are not strong enough to impact fitness, if effects balance each other out, or if changes are part of a copying strategy. Alternatively, the physiological alterations might only show impacts later in the brooding cycle or even after chick emancipation from their parents. Satellite Image Time Series are becoming increasingly available and will continue to do so in the coming years thanks to the launch of space missions which aim to provide a high spatial resolution coverage of the Earth every few days. Bio-optical characteristics and their variation over time have been poorly studied in the Patagonian shelf. In this paper, we present the trends of time series analysis from satellite images that allows us to interpret the variations of bio-optical properties throughout time and their implications for planktonic organisms. The annual and seasonal trends of six variables were analyzed for two different gulfs, Nuevo and San José, in northern Patagonia from January 2003-December 2021. We present the dynamic temporal changes of chlorophyll a (Chla-sat), phytoplankton absorption (Ab&#95;phy), detritus absorption as well as environmental features changes for the sea surface temperature (SST), depth of the euphotic zone (Z&#95;eu) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). We found positive trends for SST, Ab&#95;phy at 443 nm and PAR, but negative for Z&#95;eu in Nuevo and San José gulfs. The positive trendlines for SST and negative for Z&#95;eu suggest less availability of nutrients and light. We investigated changes in the structure of coastal fish assemblages in Northern Patagonia, Southwestern Atlantic, by using baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS) deployed at increasing distances from rocky reefs: 0-5 m, 15-20 m and 50-60 m. We estimated species richness and abundance (total and by preferred habitat type) and searched for diagnostic species in each distance range. We recorded 14 taxa across 11 families in 19 areas surveyed. Species richness and abundance were higher on reef ledges and decreased with distance from them, at a finer spatial scale than previously reported. Acanthistius patachonicus and Sebastes oculatus were indicative of reef ledges; they were less abundant at 15-20 m and disappeared at 50-60 m. Callorinchus callorynchus and Odontesthes spp. occurred only at distances >15-20 m from the reefs, while Galeorhinus galeus was distributed homogeneously throughout the surveyed area. A key in species conservation is understanding the amount and distribution of genetic diversity and how environmental changes that occurred in the recent past may have influenced current patterns of population structure. Commerson's dolphin, Cephalorhynchus commersonii, has two subspecies, one of which is endemic to South America (C. commersonii commersonii) and little is known about its population genetics. Our objective was to investigate the population genetics of this subspecies throughout its distribution. Using 70 skin samples and information available in GenBank, 308 mitochondrial DNA sequences and 28 species-specific microsatellites were analyzed. The species presented low genetic diversity when compared to other dolphin species, but was consistent with other species within the genus. Strong population structure based on mitochondrial DNA was exhibited throughout its entire distribution, a pattern consistent with female philopatry. However, this pattern was not detected when using microsatellites, suggesting male-mediated gene flow. Demographic tests suggested a population expansion beginning approximately 15,000 years ago, after the Last Glacial Maximum. In a climate change scenario, we recommended considering each sampling location as an independent population management unit in order to evaluate the impact of possible environmental changes on the distribution of genetic information within the species., (© 2022. Oviparous elasmobranch embryos (Chondrichthyes) have been the focus of several embryological studies; they are useful models for studying early ontogeny in vertebrates, as can help explore the existence of common developmental patterns among species. Skates (Rajiformes) are the most speciose order of oviparous elasmobranchs, however, few studies are focused on embryo development and only based on one skate family: Rajidae. Here, we extended the study of embryo development to other skate family, Arhynchobatidae, which represent about 1/3 of all skate species. Three adult female bignose fanskates (Sympterygia acuta) were held in captivity in order to provide the first complete embryonic development timeline for any species within the Arhynchobatidae family. Our results allowed further comparisons at the embryonic scale of different oviparous elasmobranch families, providing an updated cross-species overview of the early ontogeny. Incubation in S. acuta lasted 97 ± 1.4 days at 11-21.7 °C, and hatching size was 93.2 ± 0.2 mm in total length and 49.2 ± 0.3 mm in disc width. Early embryos of S. acuta were anatomically similar to other oviparous elasmobranch embryos, with several structures appearing at the same time, but late embryonic development was comparatively delayed. The late resorption of both the external yolk sac and the external gill filaments, and also the delay in the slit opening could indicate a low metabolic demand in S. acuta, which would probably be coupled with its seasonal reproductive cycle. Some structures such as external gill filaments and claspers appeared at a similar time in some species of Rajidae and also in Arhynchobatidae, but at different times in species of the same family, showing an inconsistency also found within shark families. This is the first report of anthropogenic particles (APs), including microplastics and synthetic, semi-synthetic and anthropogenically-altered natural fibers, in water and sediment of the Chubut River estuary. This river is the main source of freshwater in Chubut Province (Patagonia, Argentina), where wastes and pollutants are poured and finally end in the Atlantic Ocean. The average concentration in surface and bottom water samples was 5.5 items/L, while in sediment was 175.4 items/kg dw. Raman's analysis identified particles dominated by polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (35.5 %), dye signature only (18.5) and anthropogenic cellulose (10 %). Fibers were the prevalent shape (83 %), and the chemical identification evidenced a textile origin. The highest APs concentration was found in sediments from the site with the finest grain size and the greatest amount of organic matter. Mercury pollution is a serious global environmental issue and the characterization of its distribution and its driving forces should be urgently included in research agendas. We report unusually high mercury (Hg) concentrations (>5 μg/g) along with stable isotopes values in feathers of southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome) from colonies in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. We found a highly heterogenous prevalence of Hg throughout the study area and over a three-fold higher mean Hg concentration in southernmost colonies. Variation in Hg concentrations among colonies is primarily explained by site, rather than by trophic position. We provide further support to the existence of a Hg hotspot in the food web of the Patagonian Shelf and spatially restrict it to the southern tip of South America. This study evaluates the reproductive and ecological similarity between loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) two species of sea turtles on the southern coast of Bahia (Brazil) during two breeding seasons (October to April 2013 to 2015). The study covers a 10-km area composed of three beaches, Pompilho, Itacarezinho and Patizeiro beach, which are 5, 3, and 2 km long, respectively. Daily field surveys were performed for 102 days to assess patterns between the studied species, using the non-metric multidimensional scaling order and the Spearman correlation analysis to obtain the oviposition pattern of the two species. Moreover, Kruskall-Wallys tests were performed to review the differences in the number of hatchlings on the three beaches. The NMDS proved the species are very similar from an ecological perspective since as there were three clear groupings in terms of the number of hatchlings on the three beaches. With reference to the number of nests, a negative correlation was observed in the two species. Regarding the hatching activity of both species on the three beaches studied, a larger amount of C. caretta and E. imbricata hatchlings was found on Pompilho beach, followed by Patizeiro and Itacarézinho. These findings influence management strategies to reduce anthropogenic impact and contribute to the conservation of these two endangered sea turtle species.

A particularly concerning outcome of environmental pollution is the disturbance of reproductive processes. However, studies on the impacts of pollution on the reproductive health of fish inhabiting South American environments are limited. We studied the impact of anthropogenic pollution on the reproductive health of two sympatric Patagonian marine fish species with different reproductive strategies: the live-bearing rockfish Sebastes oculatus and the egg-laying Brazilian sandperch Pinguipes brasilianus. Our findings reveal that both species presented some degree of reproductive disturbance when inhabiting an affected site, but the specific alterations differed depending on the species, sex, and season. During the reproductive season, 17β-estradiol levels were elevated in females of both species living in polluted areas, while no differences in androgen levels were observed in either species or season. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was affected in both sexes of S. oculatus during the non-reproductive season, while the gonadal stages were mainly affected in both sexes of P. brasilianus. No signs of intersex condition were observed. Our results highlight the importance of including diverse reproductive parameters to better understand anthropogenic effects on wild animals. We aimed to describe how debris originated from coastal cities and fisheries circulates and accumulates along the Argentine continental shelf and its potential interaction with southern giant petrels (SGP, Macronectes giganteus). We used tracking data of 31 SGPs (adults and juveniles) from Patagonian colonies. Lagrangian simulations of particles were released from coastal cities and fisheries. Oceanographic features together with plastic input generated a corridor of debris through the Argentine shelf with areas of high debris accumulation, exposing SGP to plastic consumption. During chick provisioning trips 93.9% of petrel's locations overlapped with areas of plastic accumulation. Although early developmental stages were more exposed to particles from cities, the exposure of petrels (all classes) to debris from fisheries was 10% higher than from cities. Measures to reduce debris from fisheries, would reduce plastic ingestion by giant petrels. The toxicity of microplastic particles (MPs) on aquatic environments has been widely reported; however, their effects on protists are still contradictory. For example, it is unclear if cell size and cell wall have a role in shaping the response of flagellates to MPs. In this study, seven marine flagellated microalgae (six Dinoflagellates and one Raphidophyceae) were incubated with 10 mg L -1 MPs (polystyrene plastic micro-spheres, 1 μm diameter) to address the above question by measuring different response variables, i.e., growth, optimal photochemical efficiency (F v /F m ), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and cell morphology. The effect of MPs on growth and F v /F m showed species-specificity effects. Maximum and minimum MPs-induced inhibitions were detected in Karenia mikimotoi (76.43%) and Akashiwo sanguinea (10.16%), respectively, while the rest of the species showed intermediate responses. The presence of MPs was associated with an average reduction of Chl-a content in most cases and with a higher superoxide dismutase activity in all cases. Seven species were classified into two groups by the variation of Chl-a under MPs treatment. One group (Prorocentrum minimum and Karenia mikimotoi) showed increased Chl-a, while the other (P. donghaiense, P. micans, Alexandrium tamarense, Akashiwo sanguinea, Heterosigma akashiwo) showed decreased Chl-a content. The MPs-induced growth inhibition was negatively correlated with cell size in the latter group. SEM images further indicated that MPs-induced malformation in the smaller cells (e.g., P. donghaiense and K. mikimotoi) was more severe than the bigger cells (e.g., A. sanguinea and P. micans), probably due to a relatively higher ratio of the cell surface to cell volume in the former. These results implicate that the effect of MPs on marine flagellated microalgae was related to the cell size among most species but not cell wall. Understanding the recovery of whale populations is critical for developing population-management and conservation strategies. The southern right whale (SRW) Eubalena australis was one of the baleen whale species that has experienced centuries of exploitation. We assess here for the first time the population dynamics of the SRW from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean at the regional level to measure numerically the effect of whaling and estimate the population trend and recovery level after depletion. We reconstructed the catch history of whaling for the period 1670-1973 by an extensive review of different literature sources and developed a Bayesian state-space model to estimate the demographic parameters. The population trajectory indicated that the pre-exploitation abundance was close to 58,000 individuals (median = 58,212; 95% CI = 33,329-100,920). The abundance dropped to its lowest abundance levels in the 1830s when fewer than 2,000 individuals remained. The current median population abundance was estimated at 4,742 whales (95% CI = 3,853-6,013), suggesting that the SRW population remains small relative to its pre-exploitation abundance (median depletion P 2021 8.7%). We estimated that close to 36% of the SRW population visits the waters of the Península Valdés, the main breeding ground, every year. Our results provide insights into the severity of the whaling operation in the southwestern Atlantic along with the population´s response at low densities, thus contributing to understand the observed differences in population trends over the distributional range of the species worldwide., (© 2022. Mechanisms promoting coexistence between closely related species are fundamental for maintaining species diversity. Mechanisms of niche differentiation include allochrony which offsets the peak timing of resource utilisation between species. Many studies focus on spatial and temporal niche partitioning during the breeding season, few have investigated the role allochrony plays in influencing interspecific segregation of foraging distribution and ecology between congeneric species during the non-breeding season. We investigated the non-breeding migrations of Snares (Eudyptes robustus) and Fiordland penguins (Eudyptes pachyrhynchus), closely related species breeding between 100-350 km apart whose migration phenology differs by two months. Using light geolocation tracking, we examined the degree of overlap given the observed allochrony and a hypothetical scenario where the species commence migration simultaneously. We found that Fiordland penguins migrated to the Sub-Antarctic Frontal Zone and Polar Frontal Zone in the austral autumn whereas Snares penguins disperse westwards staying north of the Sub-Tropical Front in the austral winter. Our results suggest that allochrony is likely to be at the root of segregation because the relative profitability of the different water masses that the penguins forage in changes seasonally which results in the two species utilising different areas over their core non-breeding periods. Furthermore, allochrony reduces relatively higher levels of spatiotemporal overlap during the departure and arrival periods, when the close proximity of the two species' colonies would cause the birds to congregate in similar areas, resulting in high interspecific competition just before the breeding season. Available evidence from other studies suggests that the shift in phenology between these species has arisen from adaptive radiation and phenological matching to the seasonality of local resource availability during the breeding season and reduced competitive overlap over the non-breeding season is likely to be an incidental outcome., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist. The dynamics of phytoplankton across a seasonal frontal system formed in San José Gulf (SJG, Patagonia Argentina) and in neighbouring shelf waters was assessed based on bio-optical satellite data (2003-2018) and spring and summer in situ samplings. Bio-optical properties of the water masses on the eastern (ED) and western (WD) domains of the seasonal frontal system of SJG showed clear differences: the year-round-vertically-mixed waters from the WD, strongly connected with the adjacent shelf waters, evidenced a brief and strong single phytoplankton bloom, while those from the ED, showing lower exchange with shelf waters and a strong vertical stratification during the warm season, displayed an earlier and long-lasting spring phytoplankton bloom, followed by a late-summer and autumn bloom, both associated with the development and erosion of the seasonal thermocline. Waters from the entire system are optically influenced by the absorption of coloured dissolved organic matter and detritus (cdom + detritus), suggesting a strong sediment load contribution from the continent and the seabed. To remark, a strong correlation between satellite chlorophyll-a (Chla-sat) and absorption by phytoplankton (aphy 443 ) in the outer shelf waters differs from the weak correlation of those variables in the gulf's water masses, whose optical parameters are more complex. In situ Chla records may indicate wind-driven upwelling and downwelling areas in the northern and southern coasts of the ED. Dissolved nitrogen was identified as the limiting macronutrient for phytoplankton growth in the ED during summer. In waters off Península Valdés (PV), Argentina, southern right whales (SRW, Eubalaena australis) are occasionally exposed to domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin produced by diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Domoic acid toxicity in marine mammals can cause gastrointestinal and neurological clinical signs, alterations in hematologic and endocrine variables, and can be fatal in extreme cases. In this study, we validated an enzyme immunoassay to quantify fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGCm) in 16 SRW fecal samples from live and dead stranded whales in PV from 2013 to 2018 and assessed fGCm levels associated with DA exposure. Overall, fGCm levels were significantly lower in SRWs with detectable fecal DA (n = 3) as compared to SRWs with undetectable fecal DA levels (n = 13). The highest fecal DA was observed in a live lactating female, which had low fGCm compared to the other lactating females studied. The highest fGCm was observed in a lactating female with undetectable DA; interestingly, at the time of sample collection, this female was sighted with two calves, an extremely unusual occurrence in this species. Though the sample size of these exceptionally rare breeding-season fecal samples was unavoidably small, our study provides evidence of potential adrenal alterations in whales exposed to an environmental neurotoxin such as DA., (© 2021. Background: Temperate rocky reefs in the SW Atlantic are productive areas that support highly diverse communities of invertebrates, algae and fishes. Rocky outcrops form complex structures which offer a diversity of microhabitats that lead to a great variety of co-existing species. Subtidal biodiversity within the Natural Protected Area Península Valdés is largely unexplored and studies are mainly limited to fish. A total of 560 high definition photoquadrats from seven rocky reefs (1-25 m depth) at Punta Pardelas were obtained during March 2019. In total, 4491 occurrences were recorded and identified to phyla (n = 2), superclasses (n = 1), classes (n = 5), subclasses (n = 2), orders (n = 2), families (n = 1), subfamilies (n = 1), genera (n = 10) and species (n = 43) levels. This dataset was developed to provide a baseline inventory of Punta Pardelas inside the Natural Protected Area, that was only partially reported more than 50 years ago. Such data represent the first step towards monitoring these less-accessible ecosystems., New Information: Most of the available information about Atlantic Patagonian marine biodiversity is related to rocky intertidal communities or rocky reef fish communities. Despite having more than 4000 km of coastline, in the last 20 years only four studies have focused on subtidal benthic communities from shallow rocky reefs in Argentina (Genzano et al. 2011, Rechimont et al. 2013, Bravo et al. 2015, Bravo et al. 2020a). However, none of them described the epi-benthic community of different surface orientations on the rocky reefs. This dataset includes several surface orientations (i.e. horizontal, vertical, overhang and cave floor) and their microhabitats. We found almost double the number of taxa previously reported for the area. Through stratified sampling of different surface orientations, we recorded species that are often overlooked and thus registered as part of the existing biodiversity. For example, overhang surfaces in our study showed a unique assemblage and a great diversity of sponges. The system formed by a still-unidentified rhizocephalan infecting the Patagonian stone crab Danielethus (Platyxanthus) patagonicus (A. Milne-Edwards, 1879) was analyzed in northern Patagonia. Out of 3222 crabs sampled, mean prevalence of externae was 2.1%, while corrected mean prevalence based on observations of externae, scars or other indicators of infection was slightly higher (3.01%; N = 2100). Prevalence was higher in males (4.47%) than in females (1.44%). Parasitized males were morphologically feminized, while females showed no hyper-feminization. Although most parasitized crabs showed only 1 externa, 2 externae were observed in some individuals. The parasite externae were only present in intermediate-sized crabs (26.6-99.7 cm carapace width). While scanning electron microscopy images allowed detection of the 'smooth-surface-balloon' type of retinacula on the inner surface of the externae, typical of the Sacculinidae and Peltogastridae, the position of the mantle opening relative to the stalk, the receptacle location and the shape of the externae suggest that the parasite belongs to either the genus Sacculina or to the recently erected Parasacculina (Polyascidae).

The relationship between fish functional diversity and fishing levels at which its baselines shift is important to identify the consequences of fishing in ecosystem functioning. For the first time, the authors of this study implemented a trait-based approach in the Argentine Patagonian Sea to identify the vulnerability and spatiotemporal changes in functional diversity of fish assemblages incidentally captured by a trawling fleet targeting the Argentine red shrimp Pleoticus muelleri (Spence Bate, 1888) between 2003 and 2014. The authors coupled seven fish trophic traits to a reconstructed fish assemblage for the study area and by-catch and evaluated changes in fish species richness and four complementary functional diversity measures (functional richness, redundancy, dispersion and community trait values) along with fishing intensity, temporal use, latitudinal location and depth of fishing grounds, and vessel length. Resident fishes larger than 30 cm in length, with depressed and fusiform bodies, intermediate to high trophic levels, and feeding in benthic, demersal and midwater areas were vulnerable to by-catch. In addition, fish assemblages exhibited a low functional trait redundancy, likely related to species influxes in a biogeographic ecotone with tropicalisation signs. Significant increases in fish trait richness and dispersion poleward and deep suggested new functional roles in these grounds, matching trends in community body size, reproductive load, maximum depth and trophic level. Finally, a temporal increase in fish species and functional trait removal in fishing grounds led to trait homogenisation since 2003. Yeasts play a crucial role in brewing. During fermentation, besides ethanol and carbon dioxide, yeasts produce a considerable number of organic compounds, which are essential for beer flavor. In particular, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces pastorianus are traditionally used in the production of ale and lager beers, respectively. Nowadays, the continuous growth of the craft beer market motivates the production of differential and innovative beers; leading specialists and brewers focus on non-conventional yeasts as tools for new product development. In this work, we describe the potential application of non-conventional yeast species such as those of the genera Brettanomyces, Torulaspora, Lachancea, Wickerhamomyces, Pichia and Mrakia in the craft brewing industry, as well as non-traditional brewing yeasts of the Saccharomyces genus. Furthermore, the fermentation conditions of these non-conventional yeasts are discussed, along with their abilities to assimilate and metabolize diverse wort components providing differential characteristics to the final product. In summary, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art of non-conventional yeasts, which is highly relevant for their application in the production of novel craft beers including flavored beers, non-alcoholic beers, low-calorie beers and functional beers., (Copyright © 2021 Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. Diphyllobothriosis caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum) is an emerging parasitic disease reported also from non-endemic areas, including Europe (Spain). The origin of these human cases is unknown but should be related to fresh marine fish imported from endemic areas. In this study, we molecularly confirmed common dolphins Delphinus delphis off Argentina as euparatenic transit hosts of A. pacificus. Preliminary analysis of their stomach content, together with data from previous studies from the Southwest Atlantic, showed that common dolphins feed almost exclusively on schooling Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita. Therefore, we suggest that Argentine hake and Argentine anchovy may represent the intermediate hosts of A. pacificus in the Southwest Atlantic, but also in Europe to where M. hubbsi is imported on ice (unfrozen)., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

A relevant and current aspect of wastewater treatment systems is related to the processes of the nitrogen cycle that results in its elimination in gaseous forms. In the present study, we report the first measurements of nitrate-reducing rate (NRR) at lab-scale, using the flow-through reactor technique with sludge of a sewage stabilization pond system located in Patagonia (Argentina). Sludge was collected from Inlet and Outlet areas, in winter and summer. The sludge was characterized by having high moisture content (>94%) and organic matter concentration greater than 37%. The nitrate reduction experimental dates fitted significantly to the Michaelis-Menten model, allowing the estimation of the parameters that regulate the NR kinetics. The maximum potential nitrate reduction rate (R max ) showed great variability, registering a maximum of 131.6 μmol-N·gdw -1 ·h -1 (Outlet-Summer) and a minimum of 4.1 μmol-N·gdw -1 ·h -1 (Inlet-Winter). The lowest half saturation constant (K m ) was recorded in the Inlet sludge during the winter (6.1 mg N-NO 3 - ·L -1 ), which indicates a greater affinity for nitrate of this bacterial consortium. An unusually high activity of NR was registered, being higher with sludge from the Outlet zone and with summer temperature. In full-scale ponds, the NR activity could explain a relevant part of the nitrogen removal that involves the escape of gaseous forms.

Background : Echinochrome A (EchA) is a pigment from sea urchins. EchA is a polyhydroxylated 1,4-naphthoquinone that contains several hydroxyl groups appropriate for free-radical scavenging and preventing redox imbalance. EchA is the most studied molecule of this family and is an active principle approved to be used in humans, usually for cardiopathies and glaucoma. EchA is used as a pharmaceutical drug. Methods : A comprehensive literature and patent search review was undertaken using PubMed, as well as Google Scholar and Espacenet search engines to review these areas. Conclusions : In the bloodstream, EchA can mediate cellular responses, act as a radical scavenger, and activate the glutathione pathway. It decreases ROS imbalance, prevents and limits lipid peroxidation, and enhances mitochondrial functions. Most importantly, EchA contributes to the modulation of the immune system. EchA can regulate the generation of regulatory T cells, inhibit pro-inflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 cytokine production, while slightly reducing IL-8, TNF-α, INF-α, and NKT, thus correcting immune imbalance. These characteristics suggest that EchA is a candidate drug to alleviate the cytokine storm syndrome (CSS).

Blooms of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST), generate serious socio-economic consequences for mariculture in Chile, especially for the production of Mytilus chilensis and other bivalves. Palliative strategies, such as the depuration of mussels in enriched water with chitosan offer encouraging prospects against the advance of contaminated areas and toxin persistence. Adult mussels were fed with A. catenella for 20 days and then were allowed to depurate using chitosan as facilitator, for the same period. Intoxicated mussels showed a reduction in feeding activity and rapid PST accumulation in 20 days (C = 451.5t + 1,673.6, R 2  = 0.55 p = 0.008). Not enough evidence was found to indicate a positive effect of chitosan in mussel depuration after 20 days (C = -311.1t + 8,462.4, R 2  = 0.8 p = 0.001). At the end of the study, toxicity was higher than 800 μg STX eq kg -1 . C2 and GTX4 analogues were the most abundant in the dinoflagellate strain, while C2 and C1 were the most accumulated in mussels. The presence of C1 was notorious during depuration, as the persistence of GTX2,3. GTX5 was only detected in A. catenella, while STX was only present in mussels. Mussel sensitivity to the presence of the toxic dinoflagellate was observed in the present study. In this work we report Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) crassicollis from Patagonia, Argentina. Specimens were collected from the small intestine of a charadriid shorebird with Neotropical distribution, the Two-banded Plover ( Charadrius falklandicus ). Both morphological and molecular characterization, plus pathological aspect of this species is provided. Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) crassicollis is characterized by having a proboscis with 18-20 longitudinal rows of hooks and 11-14 hooks per row. Sequences of the small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA were obtained and compared with other sequences available in GenBank. Phylogenetic analyses inferred with each molecular marker consistently showed that P. (P.) crassicollis is sister taxa to Plagiorhynchus (Plagiorhynchus) aznari , a parasite of the long-billed curlew ( Numenius americanus ) from northern Mexico. Pathologic findings associated with the parasites include ulcerative enteritis, granulomatous inflammation, diffuse lymphocytic infiltration, serositis, and peritonitis. This record expands the host and geographical record of P. (P . ) crassicollis , provide baseline information on its pathological aspects, and represents the first molecular characterization of P. crassicollis in the Neotropics., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2021 The Authors. Extracellular proteolytic extracts from the haloalkalitolerant strain Alkalihalobacillus patagoniensis PAT 05 T have proved highly efficient to reduce wool felting, as part of an ecofriendly treatment suitable for organic wool. In the present study, we identified the extracellular proteases produced by PAT 05 T and we optimized its growth conditions for protease production through statistical methods. A total of 191 proteins were identified in PAT 05 T culture supernatants through mass spectrometry analysis. Three of the 6 detected extracellular proteases belonged to the serine-endopeptidase family S8 (EC 3.4.21); two of them showed 86.3 and 67.9% identity with an alkaline protease from Bacillus alcalophilus and another one showed 50.4% identity with Bacillopeptidase F. The other 3 proteases exhibited 55.3, 49.4 and 61.1% identity with D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase DacF, D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase DacC and endopeptidase LytE, respectively. Using a Fractional Factorial Design followed by a Central Composite Design optimization, a twofold increase in protease production was reached. NaCl concentration was the most influential factor on protease production. The usefulness of PAT 05 T extracellular proteolytic extracts to reduce wool felting was possible associated with the activity of the serine-endopeptidases closely related to highly alkaline keratinolytic proteases. The other identified proteases could cooperate, improving protein hydrolysis. This study provided valuable information for the exploitation of PAT 05 T proteases which have potential for the valorization of organic wool as well as for other industrial applications.
