Improving anthocyanin stability is a major challenge for the food industry. Studies have revealed that the interaction with pectin through non-covalent bonds can improve the anthocyanin stability, thus showing the potential to alleviate the above challenges. However, the interactions are highly complex and diverse. Thus, analyzing the effect of this interaction on anthocyanin stability is essential to promote anthocyanin-pectin complexes application in functional foods. Pectin can interact with anthocyanins through covalent and non-covalent interactions, and these interactions are affected by their structure, the external environment, and the processing methods. Through their interaction with pectin, the thermal, color, and storage stability of anthocyanins are improved, enhancing their bioavailability in the gastrointestinal and facilitating their application range in food processing. This review provides a theoretical reference for improving anthocyanin stability and increasing the application range of anthocyanin-pectin complexes.

Despite no carbapenem use in food animals, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) perseveres within food animals, rising significant concerns regarding public health risks originating from these non-clinical reservoirs. To investigate the potential link between CRKP in food animals and its infections in humans, we conducted a cross-sectional study encompassing human clinical, meat products, and farm animals, in Qingdao city, Shandong province, China. We observed a relatively higher presence of CRKP among hospital inpatients (7.3%) compared to that in the meat products (2.7%) and farm animals (pig, 4.6%; chicken, 0.63%). Multilocus sequence typing and core-genome phylogenetic analyses confirm there is no evidence of farm animals and meat products in the clinical acquisition of K. pneumoniae isolates and carbapenem-resistant genes. However, potential transmission of K. pneumoniae of ST659 and IncX3 plasmid harbouring blaNDM-5 gene from pigs to pork and farm workers was observed. Our findings suggest a limited role of farm animals and meat products in the human clinical acquisition of K. pneumoniae, and the transmission of K. pneumoniae is more common within settings, than between them.

Homologous recombination defects (HRD) render cells fail to repair DNA double-strand break (DSB), which causes synthetic lethality in these cells with punch by poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi). Here, we reveal a receptor tyrosine kinase, AXL, whose inhibition leads to HRD in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. AXL is upregulated in HCC tumors, which is positively correlated with low survival rates. AXL knockdown or AXL inhibition by bemcentinib reduces HR efficiency in HCC cells, and AXL plays its role in HR repair through its kinase activity. Furthermore, we find that AXL interacts with RPA2, enhancing the recruitment of RPA2 to DNA damage sites. Mechanistically, AXL promotes the tyrosinization of RPA2 at tyrosine 9, promoting the phosphorylation of CHK1, thereby strengthens the HR repair ability in HCC cells to resist DNA damage. In conclusion, our results reveal that AXL is a promising therapeutic biomarker for HCC patients, and present that targeting AXL-RPA2-CHK1 pathway together with PARP inhibitor will be effective therapeutic strategy in HCC.

BackgroundPreimplantation genetic testing (PGT) allows for the evaluation of embryo genetic information prior to implantation, enabling the selection of normal embryos for transfer and ultimately leading to better pregnancy outcomes. In this study, we explored factors that influence clinical outcomes of patients undergoing PGT. The effects of blastocyst grading and biopsy dates on clinical outcomes were also analyzed.MethodsThe clinical data and pregnancy outcomes of 428 PGT cycles performed in the Reproductive Medicine Department of the Northern Theater General Hospital between January 2017 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis and nomograms were used to determine factors influencing pregnancy outcomes. The impact of D5 blastocysts (290 cycles) and D6 blastocysts (138 cycles) with different quality levels on clinical outcomes was also compared.ResultsMultifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that age, BMI, endometrial thickness, and embryo quality of women affected PGT clinical outcomes. Women aged 18.5 and endometrial thickness>1.0 cm had a significantly higher pregnancy success rate. Compared to that of D6 blastocyst biopsy, D5 blastocyst biopsy was associated with a higher pregnancy success rate but a similar live birth rate. No significant differences were observed in the pregnancy and live birth rates of D5 and D6 high-quality blastocysts.ConclusionTo achieve better pregnancy outcomes after PGT, considering blastocyst grading and biopsy dates when transferring embryos is essential for improving pregnancy outcomes. Furthermore, patients should adjust their BMI, endometrial receptivity, and endometrial thickness and pattern.

Abstract Although capacitive deionization (CDI) technology has been studied intensively for more than 20 years, its commercialization remains in the initial stage, which is partly caused by the insufficient knowledge exchange between academia and industry. This concept reviews multiple scaling‐up efforts in the CDI technology for treating real water streams, following a case‐by‐case fashion. While the cell architecture in pilot scales is limited to the membrane CDI, highlighting the necessary role of ion‐exchange components during scaling‐ups, different ways of electrode stacking, i. e., monopolar and bipolar, are available. The performance indicators of these CDI systems when treating real water streams are summarized to gain insights into industrial practices. Importantly, key discrepancies in cell components and performances between pilot‐scale and lab‐scale studies are emphasized. The main challenges in large‐scale CDI systems for industrial purposes are discussed, providing hints for a better integration of research and applications.

Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDS), characterized by succinate-CoA ligase deficiency and loss of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), is caused by specific variants in nuclear genes responsible for mtDNA maintenance. SUCLA2-related mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, type 5 (MTDPS-5), presents as a rare, severe early progressive encephalomyopathy. This report investigates a new family exhibiting clinical manifestations of MTDPS-5 and elucidates the genetic basis of this disorder. In two affected siblings, a novel maternally inherited nonsense variant [c.1234C>T (p.Arg412*)] in the SUCLA2 gene and a unique paternally inherited indel variant (g.48569263–48571020del1758insATGA) were identified. Additionally, the siblings exhibited blood mtDNA content lower than 33% compared to age-matched controls. These findings underscore the importance of assessing SUCLA2 variants in patients with severe early progressive encephalomyopathy, even in the absence of methylmalonic aciduria or mtDNA loss, thereby broaden the mutational spectrum of this gene.

ObjectivesSessile serrated lesions (SSLs) are precursors of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) and have distinct characteristics compared with conventional adenomas (CAs). Several lifestyle and environmental factors may play critical roles in the development of advanced lesions. Our aim is to describe the features of SSLs and CAs and further explore risk factors for advanced lesions.MethodsThis is an observational study that collected demographic, endoscopic, and histological data from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital among the inpatient population with pathologically reported as SSL or CA between 2015 and 2022. We analyzed the clinicopathology and endoscopic differences between SSL alone, CA alone, and synchronous SSL+CA groups, and identified risk factors using multiple regression analysis.ResultsA total of 9236 polyps from 6598 patients were included in the cohort. Abstract Background and purpose Chronic gastritis, especially that caused by helicobacter pylori (HP) infection, has been associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke. But the relationship between chronic gastritis and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains largely undetermined. This study aimed to determine the potential predictors for CSVD, with chronic gastritis and its proxies as alternatives. Method Patients aged 18 years or older with indications for electronic gastroscopy were enrolled. Presence of CSVD was evaluated with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results. Degree of CSVD was scored according to established criteria. Logistic regression analysis was used for identifying possible risk factors for CSVD. Results Of the 1191 enrolled patients, 757 (63.6%) were identified as with, and 434 (36.4%) as without CSVD. Multivariate analysis indicated that patients with chronic atrophic gastritis had an increased risk for CSVD than those without (adjusted odds ratio = 1.58; 95% CI, 1.08–2.32; P

The study aimed to address the challenges in understanding the privacy goals of differential privacy by analyzing the privacy controversies surrounding it in various fields.It began with the example of data correlation and highlighted the differing perspectives among scholars regarding the targets of privacy protection.In cases where records in a dataset were correlated, adversaries can exploit this correlation to infer sensitive information about individuals, thereby sparking a debate on whether this violates privacy protection.To investigate the influence of privacy theories in the legal domain on defining privacy, two mainstream privacy theories in the computer field were examined.The first theory, limited access to personal information, focuses on preventing others from accessing an individual’s sensitive information.According to this theory, privacy mechanisms should aim to prevent adversaries from accessing a user’s actual information.In contrast, the second theory, control over personal information, emphasizes an individual’s right to communicate personal information to others.This theory suggests that the disclosure of personal information due to the relevance of others sharing data should not be considered a breach of privacy.Then the controversies of differential privacy were analyzed in the fields of computer science, social science, ethics and human-computer interaction due to their different understandings of privacy.By exploring the privacy concept of differential privacy from a multidisciplinary perspective, this study helps readers gain a correct understanding of the privacy viewpoint and goals of differential privacy while enhancing their understanding of the concept of “privacy” itself.

Abstract Mutations in OTOFERLIN (OTOF) lead to the autosomal recessive deafness 9 (DFNB9). The efficacy of adeno‐associated virus (AAV)‐mediated OTOF gene replacement therapy is extensively validated in Otof‐deficient mice. However, the clinical safety and efficacy of AAV‐OTOF is not reported. Here, AAV‐OTOF is generated using good manufacturing practice and validated its efficacy and safety in mouse and non‐human primates in order to determine the optimal injection dose, volume, and administration route for clinical trials. Subsequently, AAV‐OTOF is delivered into one cochlea of a 5‐year‐old deaf patient and into the bilateral cochleae of an 8‐year‐old deaf patient with OTOF mutations. Obvious hearing improvement is detected by the auditory brainstem response (ABR) and the pure‐tone audiometry (PTA) in these two patients. Hearing in the injected ear of the 5‐year‐old patient can be restored to the normal range at 1 month after AAV‐OTOF injection, while the 8‐year‐old patient can hear the conversational sounds. Most importantly, the 5‐year‐old patient can hear and recognize speech only through the AAV‐OTOF‐injected ear. This study is the first to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of AAV‐OTOF in patients, expands and optimizes current OTOF‐related gene therapy and provides valuable information for further application of gene therapies for deafness.

Abstract As a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis (UC) imposes a significant burden on public healthcare worldwide due to its increasing morbidity. Chinese medicines are regarded as potent therapeutic agents for UC treatment with minimal side effects. In the present study, we sought to determine the novel role of a traditional medicine Qingre Xingyu (QRXY) recipe in the development of UC and aimed to contribute to the currently available knowledge about UC by exploring the downstream mechanism of QRXY recipe in UC. Mouse models of UC were established by injections with dextran sulphate sodium (DSS), where the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) was determined followed by an analysis of their interactions. The DSS-treated NLRP3 knockout (−/−) Caco-2 cell model was successfully constructed. The in vitro and in vivo effects of the QRXY recipe on UC were investigated with the determination of disease activity index (DAI), histopathological scores, transepithelial electrical resistance, FITC-dextran, as well as cell proliferation and apoptosis. In vivo and in vitro experiments indicated that the QRXY recipe reduced the degree of intestinal mucosal injury of UC mice and functional damage of DSS-induced Caco-2 cells by inhibition of the TNFα/NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1β pathway and M1 polarization of macrophages, and TNFα overexpression or NLRP3 knockdown could counterweigh the therapeutic effects of QRXY recipe. To conclude, our study elicited that QRXY inhibited the expression of TNFα and inactivated the NLRP3/Caspase-1/IL-1β pathway, thereby alleviating intestinal mucosal injury and relieving UC in mice.

Abstract China’s industrial process-related Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are growing rapidly and are already equivalent to 13–19% of energy-related emissions in the past three decades. Previous studies mainly focused on emissions from fossil fuel combustion, however, there are a broad range of misconceptions regarding the trend and source of process-related emissions. To effectively implement emission reduction policies, it is necessary to compile an accurate accounting of process-related GHG emissions. However, the incompleteness in scope, unsuitable emission factor, and delay in updates in the current emission inventory have led to inaccurate emission estimates and inefficient mitigation actions. Following the methodology provided by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we constructed a time series inventory of process-related GHG emissions for 15 industrial products from 1990–2020 in China. This emission inventory covers more than 90% of China’s process-related GHG emissions. In our study, emission factors were adjusted to refer to the industrial production process, technology, and raw material structure in China, which has led to increased accuracy of emission accounting. The dataset can help identify the sources of process-related GHG emissions in China and provide a data base for further policy implications.

Objective To analyze the changes of blood routine and platelet related parameters of the elderly apheresis platelet donors since the first donation, so as to ensure the health and platelet quality of the elderly apheresis donors. Methods From 2019 to 2021, a total of 69 apheresis platelet donors in our center, aged 55-60 years old, involving 3400 occasions of donation, were enrolled in this study. The change trends of blood routine and platelet related parameters before and after the age of 55 were retrospectively analyzed. One way ANOVA was used for group comparison, and Pearson correlation analysis of platelet parameters was performed. Results The values of blood routine and platelet related parameters were higher in men than in women (P0.05). As for the males in comparison of the parameters before 55 years old, WBC decreased significantly after 55 years of age (P0.05). The changes of PDW, MPV and P-LCR were consistent and showed a linear positive correlation. Conclusion The blood routine tests of the elderly apheresis platelet donors were all within the normal range and the proportion was relatively stable. Personalized blood donation schemes should be customized for the elderly blood donors and the health management of blood donors should be implemented.

The helicon plasma source is of great significance for the magnetoplasma rocket engine (MPRE) to be used as an effective propulsion device. In this paper, a multi-fluid, two-dimensional, axisymmetric model coupled with the electromagnetic field was developed to simulate the helicon plasma source in the MPRE. The simulation results demonstrate that the operation mode of the helicon plasma source in the MPRE gradually converts to a high-order wave mode and the resonance between the electromagnetic field and electrons is observed; due to the resonance, the deposit power density inside the plasma increases significantly, and the plasma density is two orders of magnitude higher than that in the inductively coupled plasma source. As the magnetic field intensity increases, the helicon plasma source enters into a high-order wave mode, which suggests that the MPRE can improve the utilization rate of the working medium by a stronger magnetic field.

The optimization of a transmission type bremsstrahlung conversion target was carried out with Monte Carlo code FLUKA for intense pulsed electron beams with electron energy of several hundred keV for maximum photon fluence. The photon emission intensity from electrons with energy ranging from 300 keV to 1 MeV on tungsten, tantalum and molybdenum targets was calculated with varied target thicknesses. The research revealed that higher target material element number and electron energy leads to increased photon fluence. For a certain target material, the target thickness with maximum photon emission fluence exhibits a linear relationship with the electron energy. With certain electron energy and target material, the thickness of the target plays a dominant role in increasing the transmission photon intensity, with small target thickness the photon flux is largely restricted by low energy loss of electrons for photon generation while thick targets may impose extra absorption for the generated photons. The spatial distribution of bremsstrahlung photon density was analyzed and the optimal target thicknesses for maximum bremsstrahlung photon fluence were derived versus electron energy on three target materials for a quick determination of optimal target design.

Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the most malignant tumors with high morbidity and mortality, especially colorectal cancer, which has become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Targeted drug treatment and precise endoscopic resection can significantly improve the overall survival rate and greatly extend the life span. Promising biomedical applications of hydrogels would represent hopeful therapeutic alternatives for patients with different kinds of diseases, particularly providing precise therapy for cancer patients. Although the intersection field of material science and biomedical science has made tremendous advances, major challenges remain. In this review, the application of hydrogel-based technology in cancer precision medicine is the focus of attention, which is the development trend of multidisciplinary cooperation in the future. First, we provide the current clinical landscape of hydrogel applications, and then we highlight precision oncology, including personalized drug treatment and accurate endoscopic intervention. Finally, we discuss major challenges for their clinical translation that have not yet been overcome and future perspectives on cancer precision medicine.

A time-saving, efficient, and environmentally friendly ultrasonic-microwave-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent (UMAE-NADES) extraction method was developed for the extraction of anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa. Eight different natural eutectic solvents were screened initially, and choline chloride-glycerol was selected as the extraction solvent. The extraction conditions were optimized using the response surface methodology, and the extraction rate of anthocyanins was higher than those achieved using the traditional ethanol method, natural deep eutectic solvent extraction method, and ultrasonic-microwave-assisted ethanol method. Six anthocyanins, including cyanidin-3-O-galactoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside, cyanidin-3-O-xyloside, cyanidin-3,5-O-dihexoside, and the dimer of cyanidin-hexoside were identified and extracted at a purity of 448.873 mg/g using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The compounds extracted using UMAE-NADES had higher antioxidant capacities than those extracted by the other three methods. The UMAE-NADES demonstrated significant efficiency toward the extraction of bioactive substances and has potential utility in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract Failing to consider the strong correlations between weights and topological properties in capacity-weighted networks renders test results on the scale-free property unreliable. According to the preferential attachment mechanism, existing high-degree nodes normally attract new nodes. However, in capacity-weighted networks, the weights of existing edges increase as the network grows. We propose an optimized simplification method and apply it to international trade networks. Our study covers more than 1200 product categories annually from 1995 to 2018. We find that, on average, 38%, 38% and 69% of product networks in export, import and total trade are scale-free. Furthermore, the scale-free characteristics differ depending on the technology. Counter to expectations, the exports of high-technology products are distributed worldwide rather than concentrated in a few developed countries. Our research extends the scale-free exploration of capacity-weighted networks and demonstrates that choosing appropriate filtering methods can clarify the properties of complex networks.

Abstract Background Parent-child separation is a considerable adversity for left-behind children (LBC), but there is little evidence on the association between detailed characteristics of parent-child separation and social-emotional development among LBC. This study examined the characteristics of parent-child separation and its impacts on developmental delay among under-3 LBC in poor rural China. Methods We used data from 811 LBC surveyed in five poor counties in rural China in 2018. Detailed characteristics of their parental migration were recalled by their primary caregivers in face-to-face interviews. The children’s social-emotional development was measured by using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional. Logistic regression was employed to examine the association of detailed characteristics of parent-child separation with early social-emotional problems after adjusting for the children’s and primary caregivers’ sociodemographic characteristics. Results 287 (35.4%) children were left behind by fathers and cared for by mothers (FM-MC), while 524 (64.6%) were left behind by both parents and cared for by grandparents (PM-GC). The rate of social-emotional problems among LBC was 36.8% (PM-GC vs FM-MC: 40.6% vs 29.5%; aOR 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.16). For paternal migration, the medians of the child’s age at the first migration and average duration per migration were 3 months (IQR: 1 to 9 months) and 4.48 months (IQR: 2.38 to 7.54 months), respectively. For maternal migration, the corresponding values were 9 months (IQR: 6 to 13 months) and 4.65 months (IQR: 2.71 to 7.62 months), respectively. On average, LBC had been separated from fathers for 72% of their life due to paternal migration and from mothers for 52% of their life due to maternal migration. No significant association was found between the detailed characteristics of paternal migration and social-emotional development among LBC, while social-emotional problems among LBC were significantly associated with the proportion of cumulative duration of maternal migration in the child’s lifetime (aOR 2.83; 95% CI: 1.13 to 7.10). Conclusions LBC under 3 years had a high risk of social-emotional problems in poor rural China. Cumulative exposure to maternal migration may be detrimental to LBC’s early social-emotional development. Programs are necessary to support these children as well as their families.

Empoasca onukii is a common tea plant pest with a preference for the color yellow. Past work has shown that host leaf color is a key cue for habitat location for E. onukii. Before studying the effect of foliage shape, size, or texture on habitat localization, it is necessary to determine the visual acuity and effective viewing distance of E. onukii. In this study, a combination of 3D microscopy and X-ray microtomography showed that visual acuity did not significantly differ between females and males, but there were significant differences in the visual acuity and optical sensitivity among five regions of E. onukii’s compound eyes. The dorsal ommatidia had the highest visual acuity at 0.28 cycles per degree (cpd) but the lowest optical sensitivity (0.02 μm2sr), which indicated a trade-off between visual resolution and optical sensitivity for E. onukii. The visual acuity determined from the behavioral experiment was 0.14 cpd; E. onukii exhibited low-resolution vision and could only distinguish the units in a yellow/red pattern within 30 cm. Therefore, visual acuity contributes to the limited ability of E. onukii to distinguish the visual details of a distant target, which might be perceived as a lump of blurred color of intermediate brightness.

Abstract Background Cryptic balanced translocations often evade detection by conventional cytogenetics. The preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) technique can be used to help carriers of balanced translocations give birth to healthy offspring; however, for carriers of cryptic balanced translocations, there is only one report about trying assisted reproduction using the PGT technique but with no pregnancy. Case presentation A couple had 3 births out of 4 pregnancies, and all died very young, with two of them having both cerebral palsy and glaucoma. The husband with oligoasthenospermia was found to be a cryptic balanced translocation carrier for t (9,13) (p24.3, q31.3) with G-banding, FISH (fluorescence in-situ hybridization), and MicroSeq techniques; live birth of a healthy baby girl was achieved with PGT/NGS (next-generation sequencing) for the couple. Conclusion Here, we report for the first time a successful live birth of a healthy baby through the PGT technique for a family in which the husband is a carrier of the cryptic balanced translocation t (9,13) (p24.3, q31.3), presumably causative for cerebral palsy and glaucoma. Our study showed that the PGT/NGS technique can effectively help families with a cryptic balanced translocation have healthy offspring.

In view of the fact that most of the existing range query schemes for fog-enhanced IoT cannot achieve both multi-dimensional query and privacy protection,a privacy-preserving multi-dimensional secure query scheme for fog-enhanced IIoT was proposed.Firstly,the multiple ranges to be queried were mapped into a certain query matrix.Then,auxiliary vectors were constructed to decompose the query matrix,and then the auxiliary vector was processed by BGN homomorphic encryption to form a query trapdoor.Finally,with the homomorphic computation utilized by an IoT device terminal,the query trapdoor could be matched to its sensor data.Spatial complexity could be effectively reduced with the used specific auxiliary vectors.The confidentiality of sensor data could be ensured and the privacy of user’s query mode could be protected by the homomorphic encryption property.Experiments results show that the computational and communication costs are relatively low.

AimTo characterize the clinical features of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) in China and compare differences between our Chinese cohort and Western cohorts.MethodsThis was a retrospective study of patients with AIP that was carried out in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital between January 2010 and April 2021. We included a total of 50 patients (46 males and 4 females) aged between 27 and 86 years who fulfilled the international Consensus Diagnostic (ICD) Criteria. For comparative purposes, we included data from seven representative Western cohorts.ResultWhen comparing Chinese and Western patients, we found that obstructive jaundice was the most frequent initial symptom (68 vs. 43%, P < 0.001). Extra-pancreatic organ involvement was more common in Chinese patients (68 vs. 30%, P < 0.001). Sclerosing cholangitis was the most frequent extrapancreatic lesion (48 vs. 24%, P = 0.001). The elevation of serum IgG4 was more obvious in our cohort (86 vs. 49%, P < 0.001). Conversely, the rates of ANA-positivity were significantly higher in Western populations (17 vs. 50%, P = 0.006). With regards to imaging, diffuse swelling was significantly more common in China (44 vs. 27%, P = 0.021). Steroid therapy was used more frequently in our Chinese patients (84 vs. 59%, P = 0.001). The steroid-response rate was also significantly higher in our Chinese patients (85 vs. 54%, P = 0.001); However, the rate of resection was higher in Western cohorts (2 vs. 31%, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the two populations with regards to recurrence rate (33 vs. 33%, P = 1.000).ConclusionThis study identified significant differences between Chinese and Western populations of patients with AIP. Within the Chinese population, AIP was more likely to have jaundice and extra-pancreatic organ involvement, and elevated serum IgG4 levels. Chinese patients were also showed favorable responses to treatment with glucocorticoids.

In recent decades, the “Grain-for-Green” project, wind-sand control, and water ecological civilization construction are major events affecting the ecological vulnerability in the Yellow River Basin. Based on the “exposure-sensitivity-adaptability” framework and earth observation data, this study proposes an ecological vulnerability evaluation index system that reflects the impacts of natural and human stressors and assesses the ecological vulnerability in the Yellow River Basin during different policy periods. The results show that the overall ecological vulnerability level shows a decreasing trend from 2001 to 2019 in the Yellow River Basin, despite a slight increase in 2015 due to the impact of the dry climate. Medium ecological vulnerability level prevails in the Yellow River Basin. The vulnerability levels have obvious geographical spatial variation. The northern areas in the upper reaches are most vulnerable. Ecological vulnerability in the midstream is better than that in downstream. Ecological restoration policies had an overall positive influence on ecological vulnerability improvement. From 2001 to 2010, the percentages of Heavy (0.60–0.70) and Very heavy (≥0.70) ecological vulnerability areas in upstream and midstream decreased by 13.3 % under the impact of priority forestry projects. The findings provide guidance for ecological restoration in the Yellow River Basin and the outlined approach is potentially transferable to assess the ecological vulnerability in other regions.

Uterine surgery is a common predisposing factor for uterine rupture, while an invasive mole that leads to uterine rupture is a rare clinical occurrence. Here, we report a case of a 31-year-old childless woman who underwent abortion after 53 days of pregnancy. She still experienced abdominal pain and scanty vaginal bleeding after the abortion. Her levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) were high, while ultrasound and MRI results revealed an enlarged uterus and a mass in the myometrium. During preparation for treatment, the gynecologist ruptured the uterus of the patient, leaving her shocked. Eventually the patient's uterus was removed the uterus and pathologically diagnosed as result is the an invasive mole.

Computing independent variable sets for polynomial ideals plays an important role in solving high-dimensional polynomial equations. The computation of a Gröbner basis for an ideal, with respect to a block lexicographical order in classic methods, is huge, and then an improved algorithm is given. Based on the quasi-Gröbner basis of the extended ideal, a criterion of assigning independent variables is gained. According to the criteria, a maximal independent variable set for a polynomial ideal can be computed by assigning indeterminates gradually. The key point of the algorithm is to reduce dimensions so that the unit of computation is one variable instead of a set, which turns a multivariate problem into a single-variable problem and turns the computation of rational function field into that of the fundamental number field. Hence, the computation complexity is reduced. The algorithm has been analysed by an example, and the results reveal that the algorithm is correct and effective.

To investigate whether complexes of cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and blueberry pectin (BP) can exert protective effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Caco-2 inflammatory cells, as well as the influence of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) processing on the activities of the complexes, for determining their anti-apoptosis in vitro. LPS-induced Caco-2 cells were treated with C3G-BP complexes with or without HHP treatment. Results showed that C3G-BP complexes (100–100 µg/mL) inhibited the depolarization of mitochondria and reduced the production of ROS, as demonstrated by the reduced mRNA expression of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-8; increased expression of IL-10; and reduced iNOS, COX-2, Bcl-2, and cleaved caspase-3 levels. These findings reveal that C3G-BP exerts anti-apoptosis effects by inhibiting several mediators and cytokines involved in the inflammatory process. Furthermore, HHP-treated C3G-BP complexes better reduced cell apoptosis than untreated complexes, owing to the high pressure-mediated alterations in the monosaccharide composition of the complexes. This study provides insights for the functional changes of anthocynin-pectin complexes during food processing applications.

Background: There is little direct or indirect evidence of the effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy on early childhood development.Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational cohort study in China from May 1 to October 31, 2020, that enrolled 135 mother-infant dyads: 57 dyads in the infection cohort and 78 in the non-infection cohort. Among all infants, 14.0% were preterm birth in the infection cohort and 6.4% in the non-infection cohort. Participants were followed by telephone interviews to collect demographic characteristics, medical records of coronavirus disease 2019, breastfeeding data, and early childhood development was assessed by the Age and Stage Questionnaire (ASQ-3) and Age and Stage Questionnaire Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE-2) Chinese versions at 3 months after childbirth. We used multivariable Poisson regression models to estimate the relative risk (RR) of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Multivariable linear regression models and a mediation model were used to test the direct and indirect associations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the ASQ-3 score. This study was approved by the Peking University Third Hospital Medical Science Research Ethics Committee (No. IRB00006761-M2020127).Results: In the infection cohort, 13.6% of the children showed social–emotional developmental delay, and 13.5% showed overall developmental delay. The corresponding rates in the non-infection cohort were 23.4 and 8.1%. Compared with the non-infection cohort, SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy did not increase the risk of social-emotional (RR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.51–1.49) or overall (RR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.60–1.73) developmental delay. The mediation model showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection indirectly affected the ASQ-3 score by increasing the length of mother–infant separation.Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 during late pregnancy did not increase the risk of developmental delay of the offspring 3 months after delivery. However, SARS-CoV-2 may have indirect effects on early childhood development by increasing mother-infant separation.

Objective: To investigate variation in the characteristics of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), brain activity, and intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) across the Alzheimer's disease spectrum (ADS).Methods: The study recruited 20 individuals in each of the following categories: Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and healthy control (HC). All participants completed the 3.0T resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) and arterial spin labeling scans in addition to neuropsychological tests. Additionally, the normalized CBF, regional homogeneity (ReHo), and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) of individual subjects were compared in the ADS. Moreover, the changes in intrinsic FC were investigated across the ADS using the abnormal rCBF regions as seeds and behavioral correlations. Finally, a support-vector classifier model of machine learning was used to distinguish individuals with ADS from HC.Results: Compared to the HC subjects, patients with AD showed the poorest level of rCBF in the left precuneus (LPCUN) and right middle frontal gyrus (RMFG) among all participants. In addition, there was a significant decrease in the ALFF in the bilateral posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and ReHo in the right PCC. Moreover, RMFG- and LPCUN-based FC analysis revealed that the altered FCs were primarily located in the posterior brain regions. Finally, a combination of altered rCBF, ALFF, and ReHo in posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus (PCC/PCUN) showed a better ability to differentiate ADS from HC, AD from SCD and MCI, but not MCI from SCD.Conclusions: The study demonstrated the significance of an altered rCBF and brain activity in the early stages of ADS. These findings, therefore, present a potential diagnostic neuroimaging-based biomarker in ADS. Additionally, the study provides a better understanding of the pathophysiology of AD.

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method is used to simulate the diffusion and ionization process of a two-dimensional energetic electron beam that is injected into the background gases under the sub-atmospheric pressure, and the characteristics of such plasmas are revealed. It is found that the penetration distance of the electron beam from the exit of the electron beam reduced to 10% of the maximum value at the axis is about 35 cm, whereas the envelope of the plasma distribution is like a spindle with the penetration distance of about 130 cm, under the pressure of 5 kPa. The gas pressure has a significant impact on the penetration distance of the electron beam and the plasma that is produced. The increase in gas pressure will reduce the penetration distance of the electron beam and the plasma because higher pressure will increase the collisional probability between the electrons and the gas molecules, and the energy transfer becomes stronger.

X-ray sources based on pulsed electron accelerators stimulate the development of bremsstrahlung converter designs. The numerical optimization of transmission-type X-ray targets for maximum X-ray output by pulsed electron beams was carried out in the present work. The targets featured a combination of a heavy element (tungsten or molybdenum) X-ray conversion layer and a titanium membrane that served as the vacuum window, thermal shielding for converter heat, and an electron dump. The energy spectrum of the electron beam generated via explosive emission was analyzed via the space-charge effect, and was utilized for the source sampling algorithm for electron transportation simulation with a Monte Carlo method for X-ray emission analysis. It was revealed that the transmission photon intensity of a mono-material target is primarily affected by the thickness of the target, and there exists an optimal target thickness within which the photon fluence is restricted by insufficient electron stopping; when exceeded, the extra thickness of the X-ray converter target imposes absorption and attenuates the generated X-ray. Analysis on dual-layer targets proved that this optimized converter target thickness, combined with a proper titanium window, produces the highest X-ray photon emissions.

Energy consumption in the residential sector is increasing rapidly in China. This study applies an integrated assessment model to investigate the adverse impacts of household energy consumption by various fuel types across rural and urban areas on age- and sex-specific premature deaths associated with PM _2.5 pollution at provincial levels for 2015. We further estimate the economic and health co-benefits of a switch from solid fuels to electricity within households. We find that energy consumed by Chinese urban households is nearly 1.6 times than that of rural households. However, premature deaths due to household energy usage is 1.1 times higher in rural areas compared to urban areas due to direct use of coal for heating in rural households. The majority of household consumption-related premature deaths are predominately in the Southern area of China due to the population size and aging population. By replacing coal and biomass with electricity, this paper estimates economic benefits equal to 0.09% (95% CI: 0.08%–0.1%) GDP for rural areas and 0.006% (0.005%–0.007%) of GDP for urban areas of China. The results suggest that mitigation measures such as the promotion and subsidization of cleaner fuels, modern stove within rural households would yield these potential significant economic benefits.

Abstract Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is highly heterogeneous in both clinical and genetic fields. Accurate mutation screening is very beneficial in improving clinical diagnosis and gene-specific treatment of RP patients. The reason for the difficulties in genetic diagnosis of RP is that the ethnic-specific mutation databases that contain both clinical and genetic information are largely insufficient. In this study, we recruited 98 small Han Chinese families clinically diagnosed as RP, including of 22 dominant, 19 recessive, 52 sporadic, and five X-linked. We then used whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis to detect mutations in the genes known for RP in 101 samples from these 98 families. In total, we identified 57 potential pathogenic mutations in 40 of the 98 (41%) families in 22 known RP genes, including 45 novel mutations. We detected mutations in 13 of the 22 (59%) typical autosomal dominant families, 8 of the 19 (42%) typical autosomal recessive families, 16 of the 52 (31%) sporadic small families, and four of the five (80%) X-linked families. Our results extended the mutation spectrum of known RP genes in Han Chinese, thus making a contribution to RP gene diagnosis and the pathogenetic study of RP genes.
