3. Simultaneously Improved Efficiency and Stability in All-Polymer Solar Cells by a P–i–N Architecture

Abstract

All-polymer organic solar cells offer exceptional stability. Unfortunately, the use of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure has the intrinsic challenge to control the side-chain entanglement and backbone orientation to achieve sophisticated phase separation in all-polymer blends. Here, we revealed that the P-i-N structure can outperform the BHJ ones with a nearly 50% efficiency improvement, reaching a power conversion efficiency approaching 10%. This P-i-N structure can also provide an enhanced internal electric field and remarkably stable morphology under harsh thermal stress. We have further demonstrated generality of the P-i-N structure in several other all-polymer systems. Considering the adjustable polymer molecular weight and solubility, the P-i-N device structure can be more beneficial for all-polymer systems. With the design of more crystalline polymers, the antiquated P-i-N structure can further show its strength in all-polymer systems by simplified morphology control and improved carrier extraction, becoming a more favorite device structure than the dominant BHJ structure.

Abstract

Converting non‐visual light into photocurrent while maintaining high visual transparency is vital for semitransparent organic solar cells (ST‐OSCs) application, yet often challenging over insufficient invisible light‐harvesting. Herein, spectrally selective optical manipulation for ST‐OSCs with high visual light transparency and full‐spectral non‐visual light reflection is proposed by matching the optical admittance of ultrathin Ag films using ZnS and MgF2. The reflection of optically enhanced ST‐OSCs at the spectral region beyond the human eye's response spectrum is improved and the transmission in the visual region is simultaneously enhanced. By further integrating an anti‐reflective structure, the optimal structure boosts the average visible transmittance and power conversion efficiency of ST‐OSCs to 44.3% and 12.6%, respectively, yielding a record light utilization efficiency of 5.6%. Corresponding flexible ST‐OSCs with high mechanical stability implies that this work provides a facile and universal strategy for ST‐OSCs aiming at building integrated photovoltaics. Abstract

Photodiode‐type solar‐blind photodetectors (SBPDs) with the self‐powered feature hold great promise for applications in unattended secure communication, flame detection, and missile warning. However, the responsivity of SBPDs is usually limited due to the severe solar‐blind (SB) light extinction in substrates and charge transport layers. Herein, a spectrally selective hole extraction structure (SHE) is proposed for high‐efficiency perovskite SBPDs. The SHE consisting of a tandem Fabry–Perot cavity and energy‐level‐matched hole transport layer endows the device with narrowband absorption in the SB region and optimized charge extraction capability from the CsPbI2Br perovskite. The optimized SHE exhibits a peak transmittance of 27% at 255 nm and a half maximum at full width of 28 nm. Under SB light illumination, the champion device achieves a responsivity of 56.20 mA W−1 and a detectivity (D*) of 2.86 × 1013 Jones, which are the record values among the reported results. 10. Hot-electron emission-driven energy recycling in transparent plasmonic electrode for organic solar cells

Abstract

Plasmonic metal electrodes with subwavelength nanostructures are promising for enhancing light harvesting in photovoltaics. However, the nonradiative damping of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) during coupling with sunlight results in the conversion of the excited hot-electrons to heat, which limits the absorption of light and generation of photocurrent. Herein, an energy recycling strategy driven by hot-electron emission for recycling the SPP energy trapped in the plasmonic electrodes is proposed. A transparent silver-based plasmonic metal electrode (A-PME) with a periodic hexagonal nanopore array is constructed, which is combined with a luminescent organic emitter for radiative recombination of the injected hot-electrons. Owing to the suppressed SPP energy loss via broadband hot-electron emission, the A-PME achieves an optimized optical transmission with an average transmittance of over 80% from 380 to 1200 nm. Abstract

Using narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) can broaden the absorption spectrum of organic solar cells (OSCs) to the near‐infrared region. However, the simultaneously decreased extinction coefficient of the active layer at the blue region results in inevitable light escaping and energy loss. Herein, a blazed grating‐based device configuration consisting of a patterned rear electrode is employed to compensate for the low absorption of nonfullerene OSCs. Experimental results reveal that the normal incidence light, especially blue light, that bounces off the patterned rear electrode is concentrated in a large tilted angle and subsequently trapped in waveguide mode. Along with the excitation of surface plasmon polariton, the structured nonfullerene OSCs using a new‐designed PM6:M36 active layer obtain the broadband absorption enhancement with 1.5 times increase at the blue region. The optimized device achieves an 8.95% increase in photocurrent and a champion power conversion efficiency of approaching 18%, which is the highest reported value among all the devices based on A‐D‐A type NFAs. Abstract

All‐inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite has attracted great attention as an absorber for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its excellent thermal and light resistance. However, its device performance is restricted by the large energy level offset between CsPbI2Br and the most commonly used hole‐transporting layer (HTL). Herein, multicarbazolyl‐substituted benzonitrile (4t‐5CzBn) is inserted into the interface between CsPbI2Br and HTL to form a uniform stepped (0.24 eV) interfacial energy level structure, which reduces the energy loss and boosts the hole extraction of CsPbI2Br PSCs. The incorporation of 4t‐5CzBn induces the increase in open‐circuit voltage and fill factor from 1.256 V and 74.5% to 1.335 V and 82.3%, respectively. The optimized device achieves a power conversion efficiency of 17.34%, which is among the highest reported values of CsPbI2Br PSCs. Besides the energy level tuning effect, the tert‐butyl groups in 4t‐5CzBn improve the moisture‐resistance of CsPbI2Br PSCs. The unencapsulated device maintains over 75% of its initial efficiency after 700 h storage in air. These results demonstrate that the rational tuned energy level step benefits the performance improvement of CsPbI2Br PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Relative to electron donors for bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs), electron acceptors that absorb strongly in the visible and even near-infrared region are less well developed, which hinders the further development of OSCs. Fullerenes as traditional electron acceptors have relatively weak visible absorption and limited electronic tunability, which constrains the optical and electronic properties required of the donor. Here, high-performance fullerene-free OSCs based on a combination of a medium-bandgap polymer donor (FTAZ) and a narrow-bandgap nonfullerene acceptor (IDIC), which exhibit complementary absorption, matched energy levels, and blend with pure phases on the exciton diffusion length scale, are reported. The single-junction OSCs based on the FTAZ:IDIC blend exhibit power conversion efficiencies up to 12.5% with a certified value of 12.14%. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that exciting either the donor or the acceptor component efficiently generates mobile charges, which do not suffer from recombination to triplet states. Abstract

Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted continuous attention due to their outstanding advantages, such as tunability of detecting wavelength, low‐cost manufacturing, compatibility with lightweight and flexible devices, as well as ease of processing. Enormous efforts on performance improvement and application of OPDs have been devoted in the past decades. In this Review, recent advances in device architectures and operation mechanisms of phototransistor, photoconductor, and photodiode based OPDs are reviewed with a focus on the strategies aiming at performance improvement. The application of OPDs in spectrally selective detection, wearable devices, and integrated optoelectronics are also discussed.
