Abstract

The pulverization of lithium metal electrodes during cycling recently has been suppressed through various techniques, but the issue of irreversible consumption of the electrolyte remains a critical challenge, hindering the progress of energy-dense lithium metal batteries. Here, we design a single-ion-conductor-based composite layer on the lithium metal electrode, which significantly reduces the liquid electrolyte loss via adjusting the solvation environment of moving Li+ in the layer. A Li||Ni0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 pouch cell with a thin lithium metal (N/P of 2.15), high loading cathode (21.5 mg cm-2), and carbonate electrolyte achieves 400 cycles at the electrolyte to capacity ratio of 2.15 g Ah-1 (2.44 g Ah-1 including mass of composite layer) or 100 cycles at 1.28 g Ah-1 (1.57 g Ah-1 including mass of composite layer) under a stack pressure of 280 kPa (0.2 C charge with a constant voltage charge at 4.3 V to 0.05 C and 1.0 C discharge within a voltage window of 4.3 V to 3.0 V). The rational design of the single-ion-conductor-based composite layer demonstrated in this work provides a way forward for constructing energy-dense rechargeable lithium metal batteries with minimal electrolyte content.

18. The value of the sacroiliac joint area as a new morphological parameter of ankylosing spondylitis.

Abstract

A narrowed sacroiliac joint (SIJ) space has been considered to be a major morphologic parameter of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Previous studies revealed that the sacroiliac joint thickness (SIJT) correlated with AS in patients. However, irregular narrowing is different from thickness. Thus, we devised a method using the sacroiliac joint cross-sectional area (SIJA) as a new morphological parameter for use in evaluating AS. We hypothesized that the SIJA is a key morphologic parameter in diagnosing AS. SIJ samples were collected from 107 patients with AS, and from 85 control subjects who underwent SIJ-view X-rays that revealed no evidence of AS. We measured the SIJT and SIJA at the SIJ margin on X-rays using our picture archiving and communications system. The SIJT was measured at the narrowest point between the sacrum and the ilium. The SIJA was measured as the entire cross-sectional joint space area of the SIJ in the X-ray images. The average SIJT was 3.09 ± 0.61 mm in the control group, and 1.59 ± 0.52 mm in the AS group. Abstract

There has been a longstanding expectation that the optical resolution embodiment of photoacoustic tomography could have a substantial impact on gastrointestinal endoscopy by enabling microscopic visualization of the vasculature based on the endogenous contrast mechanism. Although multiple studies have demonstrated the in vivo imaging capability of a developed imaging device over the last decade, the implementation of such an endoscopic system that can be applied immediately when necessary via the instrument channel of a video endoscope has been a challenge. In this study, we developed a 3.38 mm diameter catheter based, integrated optical resolution photoacoustic and ultrasonic miniprobe system and successfully demonstrated its intrainstrument channel workability for the standard 3.7 mm diameter instrument channel of a clinical video endoscope based on a swine model. Through the instrument channel, we acquired the first in vivo photoacoustic and ultrasonic dual mode endoscopic images from the esophagogastric junction, which is one of the most frequently cited anatomical sites in the gastrointestinal tract in relation to Barretts esophagus. Moreover, from a rat colorectum in vivo imaging experiment, we visualized hierarchically developed mesh like capillary networks with a hole size as small as 50 microns, which suggests the potential level of image details that could be photoacoustically provided in clinical settings in the future., Comment: 28 pages

Abstract

The performance of halide perovskite-based electronic and optoelectronic devices is often related to interfacial charge transport. To shed light on the underlying physical and chemical properties of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) in direct contact with common electrodes Al, Ti, Cr, Ag, and Au, the evolution of interfacial properties and Fermi level pinning is systematically studied. Given a unique experimental facility, pristine interfaces without any exposure to ambient air were prepared. We observe aggregation of substantial amounts of metallic lead (Pb0) at the metal/MAPbI3 interface, resulting from the interfacial reaction between the deposited metal and iodine ions from MAPbI3. It is found that the Schottky barrier height at the metal/MAPbI3 interface is independent of the metal work function due to strong Fermi level pinning, possibly due to the metallic Pb0 aggregates, which act as interfacial trap sites. The charge neutrality level of MAPbI3 is consistent with the energy level of Pb0-related defects, indicating that Pb0 interfacial trap states can be nonradiative recombination sites. This work underlines that control of chemical bonding at interfaces is a key factor for designing future halide perovskite-based devices.
