Search

Radio emission has been detected from tens of white dwarfs, in particular in accreting systems. Additionally, radio emission has been predicted as a possible outcome of a planetary system around a white dwarf. We searched for 3 GHz radio continuum emission in 846,000 candidate white dwarfs previously identified in Gaia using the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) Epoch 1 Quick Look Catalogue. We identified 13 candidate white dwarfs with a counterpart in VLASS within 2". Five of those were found not to be white dwarfs in follow-up or archival spectroscopy, whereas seven others were found to be chance alignments with a background source in higher-resolution optical or radio images. The remaining source, WDJ204259.71+152108.06, is found to be a white dwarf and M-dwarf binary with an orbital period of 4.1 days and long-term stochastic optical variability, as well as luminous radio and X-ray emission. For this binary, we find no direct evidence of a background contaminant, and a chance alignment probability of only ~2 per cent. However, other evidence points to the possibility of an unfortunate chance alignment with a background radio and X-ray emitting quasar, including an unusually poor Gaia DR3 astrometric solution for this source. With at most one possible radio emitting white dwarf found, we conclude that strong (> 1-3 mJy) radio emission from white dwarfs in the 3 GHz band is virtually nonexistent outside of interacting binaries., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures. We present the results of an ultra-deep radio continuum survey, containing $\sim480$ hours of observations, of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. This comprehensive coverage of the cluster allows us to reach RMS noise levels of 1.19 $\mu Jy~\textrm{beam}^{-1}$ at 5.5 GHz, 940 $nJy~\textrm{beam}^{-1}$ at 9 GHz, and 790 $nJy~\textrm{beam}^{-1}$ in a stacked 7.25 GHz image. This is the deepest radio image of a globular cluster, and the deepest image ever made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We identify ATCA J002405.702-720452.361, a faint ($6.3\pm1.2$ $\mu Jy$ at 5.5 GHz, $5.4\pm0.9$ $\mu Jy$ at 9 GHz), flat-spectrum ($\alpha=-0.31\pm0.54$) radio source that is positionally coincident with the cluster centre and potentially associated with a faint X-ray source. No convincing optical counterpart was identified. We use radio, X-ray, optical, and UV data to show that explanations involving a background active galactic nucleus, a chromospherically active binary, or a binary involving a white dwarf are unlikely. The most plausible explanations are that the source is an undiscovered millisecond pulsar or a weakly accreting black hole. If the X-ray source is associated with the radio source, the fundamental plane of black hole activity suggests a black hole mass of $\sim54-6000$ M$_{\odot}$, indicating an intermediate-mass black hole or a heavy stellar-mass black hole., Comment: ApJ in press, 25 pages, 10 figures

The shell of the classical nova V5668 Sgr was resolved by ALMA at the frequency of 230 GHz 927 days after eruption, showing that most of the continuum bremsstrahlung emission originates in clumps with diameter smaller than $10^{15}$ cm. Using VLA radio observations, obtained between days 2 and 1744 after eruption, at frequencies between 1 and 35 GHz, we modeled the nova spectra, assuming first that the shell is formed by a fixed number of identical clumps, and afterwards with the clumps having a power law distribution of sizes, and were able to obtain the clump's physical parameters (radius, density and temperature). We found that the density of the clumps decreases linearly with the increase of the shell's volume, which is compatible with the existence of a second media, hotter and thinner, in pressure equilibrium with the clumps. We show that this thinner media could be responsible for the emission of the hard X-rays observed at the early times of the nova eruption, and that the clump's temperature evolution follows that of the super-soft X-ray luminosity. We propose that the clumps were formed in the radiative shock produced by the collision of the fast wind of the white dwarf after eruption, with the slower velocity of the thermonuclear ejecta. From the total mass of the clumps, the observed expansion velocity and thermonuclear explosion models, we obtained an approximate value of 1.25 M$_{\odot}$ for the mass of the white dwarf, a central temperature of $10^7$ K and an accretion rate from the secondary star of $10^{-9}-10^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$ y$^{-1}$., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Lightcurves of many classical novae deviate from the canonical "fast rise - smooth decline" pattern and display complex variability behavior. We present the first TESS-space-photometry-based investigation of this phenomenon. We use TESS Sector 41 full-frame images to extract a lightcurve of the slow Galactic nova V606 Vul that erupted nine days prior to the start of the TESS observations. The lightcurve covers the first of two major peaks of V606 Vul that was reached 19 days after the start of the eruption. The nova reached its brightest visual magnitude V=9.9 in its second peak 64 days after the eruption onset, following the completion of Sector 41 observations. To increase the confidence level of the extracted lightcurve, we performed the analysis using four different codes implementing the aperture photometry (Lightkurve, VaST) and image subtraction (TESSreduce, tequila_shots) and find good agreement between them. We performed ground-based photometric and spectroscopic monitoring to complement the TESS data. The TESS lightcurve reveals two features: periodic variations (0.12771d, 0.01mag average peak-to-peak amplitude) that disappeared when the source was within 1mag of peak optical brightness and a series of isolated mini-flares (with peak-to-peak amplitudes of up to 0.5mag) appearing at seemingly random times. We interpret the periodic variations as the result of azimuthal asymmetry of the photosphere engulfing the nova-hosting binary that was distorted by and rotating with the binary. Star formation in galaxies is regulated by turbulence, outflows, gas heating and cloud dispersal -- processes which depend sensitively on the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) into which supernovae (SNe) explode. Unfortunately, direct measurements of ISM environments around SNe remain scarce, as SNe are rare and often distant. Here we demonstrate a new approach: mapping the ISM around the massive stars that are soon to explode. This provides a much larger census of explosion sites than possible with only SNe, and allows comparison with sensitive, high-resolution maps of the atomic and molecular gas from the Jansky VLA and ALMA. In the well-resolved Local Group spiral M33, we specifically observe the environments of red supergiants (RSGs, progenitors of Type II SNe), Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs, tracing stars $>$30 M$_{\odot}$, and possibly future stripped-envelope SNe), and supernova remnants (SNRs, locations where SNe have exploded). We find that massive stars evolve not only in dense, molecular-dominated gas (with younger stars in denser gas), but also a substantial fraction ($\sim$45\% of WRs; higher for RSGs) evolve in lower-density, atomic-gas-dominated, inter-cloud media. We show that these measurements are consistent with expectations from different stellar-age tracer maps, and can be useful for validating SN feedback models in numerical simulations of galaxies. Along with the discovery of a 20-pc diameter molecular gas cavity around a WR, these findings re-emphasize the importance of pre-SN/correlated-SN feedback evacuating the dense gas around massive stars before explosion, and the need for high-resolution (down to pc-scale) surveys of the multi-phase ISM in nearby galaxies., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures. We present optical, infrared, ultraviolet, and radio observations of SN 2022xkq, an underluminous fast-declining type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 1784 ($\mathrm{D}\approx31$ Mpc), from $<1$ to 180 days after explosion. The high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following explosion which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux excess which is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92 optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a long-lived C I 1.0693 $\mu$m feature which persists until 5 days post-maximum. We also detect C II $\lambda$6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic dataset of SN 2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for furthering our understanding of the processes which produce faint SNe Ia., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, the figure 15 input models and synthetic spectra are now available at https://zenodo.org/record/8379254

We report a spectroscopic search for hypervelocity white dwarfs (WDs) that are runaways from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and related thermonuclear explosions. Candidates are selected from Gaia data with high tangential velocities and blue colors. We find six new runaways, including four stars with radial velocities (RVs) $>1000\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and total space velocities $\gtrsim 1300\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$. These are most likely the surviving donors from double-degenerate binaries in which the other WD exploded. The other two objects have lower minimum velocities, $\gtrsim 600\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, and may have formed through a different mechanism, such as pure deflagration of a WD in a Type Iax supernova. The four fastest stars are hotter and smaller than the previously known "D$^6$ stars," with effective temperatures ranging from $\sim$20,000 to $\sim$130,000 K and radii of $\sim 0.02-0.10\,R_{\odot}$. Three of these have carbon-dominated atmospheres, and one has a helium-dominated atmosphere. Two stars have RVs of $-1694$ and $-2285\rm \,km\,s^{-1}$ -- the fastest systemic stellar RVs ever measured. Their inferred birth velocities, $\sim 2200-2500\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$, imply that both WDs in the progenitor binary had masses $>1.0\,M_{\odot}$. The high observed velocities suggest that a dominant fraction of the observed hypervelocity WD population comes from double-degenerate binaries whose total mass significantly exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit. However, the two nearest and faintest D$^6$ stars have the lowest velocities and masses, suggesting that observational selection effects favor rarer, higher-mass stars. A significant population of fainter low-mass runaways may still await discovery. We infer a birth rate of D$^6$ stars that is consistent with the SN Ia rate. We present very early photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2023bee, starting about 8 hr after the explosion, which reveal a strong excess in the optical and nearest UV (U and UVW1) bands during the first several days of explosion. This data set allows us to probe the nature of the binary companion of the exploding white dwarf and the conditions leading to its ignition. We find a good match to the Kasen model in which a main-sequence companion star stings the ejecta with a shock as they buzz past. Models of double detonations, shells of radioactive nickel near the surface, interaction with circumstellar material, and pulsational delayed detonations do not provide good matches to our light curves. We also observe signatures of unburned material, in the form of carbon absorption, in our earliest spectra. Our radio nondetections place a limit on the mass-loss rate from the putative companion that rules out a red giant but allows a main-sequence star. We present radio observations of the symbiotic recurrent nova V3890 Sagitarii following the 2019 August eruption obtained with the MeerKAT radio telescope at 1.28 GHz and Karl G. Janksy Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.26 to 5 GHz. The radio light curves span from day 1 to 540 days after eruption and are dominated by synchrotron emission produced by the expanding nova ejecta interacting with the dense wind from an evolved companion in the binary system. The radio emission is detected early on (day 6) and increases rapidly to a peak on day 15. The radio luminosity increases due to a decrease in the opacity of the circumstellar material in front of the shocked material and fades as the density of the surrounding medium decreases and the velocity of the shock decelerates. Modelling the light curve provides an estimated mass-loss rate of $M_{\textrm {wind}} \approx 10^{-8} {\textrm {M}}_\odot~{\textrm {yr}}^{-1}$ from the red giant star and ejecta mass in the range of $M_{\textrm {ej}}=10^{-5}-10^{-6}~{\textrm {M}}_\odot$from the surface of the white dwarf. V3890 Sgr likely hosts a massive white dwarf similar to other symbiotic recurrent novae, thus considered a candidate for supernovae type Ia (SNe Ia) progenitor. However, its radio flux densities compared to upper limits for SNe Ia have ruled it out as a progenitor for SN 2011fe.

In August of 2021, Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S., and MAGIC detected GeV and TeV $\gamma$-ray emission from an outburst of recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi. This detection represents the first very high energy $\gamma$-rays observed from a nova, and opens a new window to study particle acceleration. Both H.E.S.S. and MAGIC described the observed $\gamma$-rays as arising from a single, external shock. In this paper, we perform detailed, multi-zone modeling of RS Ophiuchi's 2021 outburst including a self-consistent prescription for particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification. We demonstrate that, contrary to previous work, a single shock cannot simultaneously explain RS Ophiuchi's GeV and TeV emission, particularly the spectral shape and distinct light curve peaks. Instead, we put forward a model involving multiple shocks that reproduces the observed $\gamma$-ray spectrum and temporal evolution. The simultaneous appearance of multiple distinct velocity components in the nova optical spectrum over the first several days of the outburst supports the presence of distinct shocks, which may arise either from the strong latitudinal dependence of the density of the external circumbinary medium (e.g., in the binary equatorial plane versus the poles) or due to internal collisions within the white dwarf ejecta (as powers the $\gamma$-ray emission in classical novae)., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, published in ApJ

We present the discovery of a new optical/X-ray source likely associated with the Fermi $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J1408.6-2917. Its high-amplitude periodic optical variability, large spectroscopic radial velocity semi-amplitude, evidence for optical emission lines and flaring, and X-ray properties together imply the source is probably a new black widow millisecond pulsar binary. We compile the properties of the 41 confirmed and suspected field black widows, finding a median secondary mass of $0.027\pm0.003\,M_{\odot}$. Considered jointly with the more massive redback millisecond pulsar binaries, we find that the "spider" companion mass distribution remains strongly bimodal, with essentially zero systems having companion masses between $\sim0.07-0.1\,M_{\odot}$. X-ray emission from black widows is typically softer and less luminous than in redbacks, consistent with less efficient particle acceleration in the intrabinary shock in black widows, excepting a few systems that appear to have more efficient "redback-like" shocks. Together black widows and redbacks dominate the census of the fastest-spinning field millisecond pulsars in binaries with known companion types, making up $\gtrsim$80% of systems with $P_{\rm{spin}}<2\,\rm{ms}$. Similar to redbacks, the neutron star masses in black widows appear on average significantly larger than the canonical $1.4\,M_{\odot}$, and many of the highest-mass neutron stars claimed to date are black widows with $M_{\rm{NS}}\gtrsim2.1\,M_{\odot}$. Both of these observations are consistent with an evolutionary picture where spider millisecond pulsars emerge from short orbital period progenitors that had a lengthy period of mass transfer initiated while the companion was on the main sequence, leading to fast spins and high masses., Comment: 18 pages text, 9 figures, 5 tables; Accepted to ApJ

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are thermonuclear explosions of degenerate white dwarf (WD) stars destabilized by mass accretion from a companion star, but the nature of their progenitors remains poorly understood. A way to discriminate between progenitor systems is through radio observations; a non-degenerate companion star is expected to lose material through winds or binary interaction prior to explosion, and the SN ejecta crashing into this nearby circumstellar material (CSM) should result in radio synchrotron emission. However, despite extensive efforts, no SN Ia has ever been detected at radio wavelengths, which suggests a clean environment and a companion star that is itself a degenerate WD star. Here we report on the study of SN 2020eyj, a SN Ia showing helium-rich CSM, as revealed by its spectral features, infrared emission and, for the first time in a SN Ia, a radio counterpart. Based on our modeling, we conclude the CSM likely originates from a single-degenerate (SD) binary system where a WD accretes material from a helium donor star, an often hypothesized formation channel for SNe Ia. Weakly accreting black hole X-ray binaries launch compact radio jets that persist even in the quiescent spectral state, at X-ray luminosities <1e-5 of the Eddington luminosity. However, radio continuum emission has been detected from only a few of these quiescent systems, and little is known about their radio variability. Jet variability can lead to misclassification of accreting compact objects in quiescence, and affects the detectability of black hole X-ray binaries in next-generation radio surveys. Here we present the results of a radio monitoring campaign of A0620-00, one of the best-studied and least-luminous known quiescent black hole X-ray binaries. We observed A0620-00 at 9.8 GHz using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array on 31 epochs from 2017 to 2020, detecting the source ~75% of the time. We see significant variability over all timescales sampled, and the observed flux densities follow a lognormal distribution with a mean of 12.5 uJy and standard deviation of 0.22 dex. In no epoch was A0620-00 as bright as in 2005 (51 +/- 7 uJy), implying either that this original detection was obtained during an unusually bright flare, or that the system is fading in the radio over time. We present tentative evidence that the quiescent radio emission from A0620-00 is less variable than that of V404 Cyg, the only other black hole binary with comparable data. Given that V404 Cyg has a jet radio luminosity ~20 times higher than A0620-00, this comparison could suggest that less luminous jets are less variable in quiescence., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Momentum feedback from isolated supernova remnants (SNRs) have been increasingly recognized by modern cosmological simulations as a resolution-independent means to implement the effects of feedback in galaxies, such as turbulence and winds. However, the integrated momentum yield from SNRs is uncertain due to the effects of SN clustering and interstellar medium (ISM) inhomogeneities. In this paper, we use spatially-resolved observations of the prominent 10-kpc star-forming ring of M31 to test models of mass-weighted ISM turbulence driven by momentum feedback from isolated, non-overlapping SNRs. We use a detailed stellar-age distribution (SAD) map from the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey, observationally-constrained SN delay-time distributions, and maps of the atomic and molecular hydrogen to estimate the mass-weighted velocity dispersion using the Martizzi et al. ISM turbulence model. Our estimates are within a factor of 2 of the observed mass-weighted velocity dispersion in most of the ring, but exceed observations at densities $\lesssim 0.2$ cm$^{-3}$ and SN rates $>2.1\times 10^{-4}$ SN yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$, even after accounting for plausible variations in stellar-age distribution models and ISM scale height assumptions. We conclude that at high SN rates the momentum deposited is most likely suppressed by the non-linear effects of SN clustering, while at low densities, SNRs reach pressure equilibrium before the cooling phase. We report the discovery of 1RXH J082623.6-505741, a 10.4 hr orbital period compact binary. Modeling extensive optical photometry and spectroscopy reveals a $\sim 0.4 M_{\odot}$ K-type secondary transferring mass through a low-state accretion disk to a non-magnetic $\sim 0.8 M_{\odot}$ white dwarf. The secondary is overluminous for its mass and dominates the optical spectra at all epochs, and must be evolved to fill its Roche Lobe at this orbital period. The X-ray luminosity $L_X \sim 1$-$2 \times 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ derived from both new XMM-Newton and archival observations, although high compared to most CVs, still only requires a modest accretion rate onto the white dwarf of $\dot{M} \sim 3 \times 10^{-11}$ to $3 \times 10^{-10} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, lower than expected for a cataclysmic variable with an evolved secondary. No dwarf nova outbursts have yet been observed from the system, consistent with the low derived mass transfer rate. Several other cataclysmic variables with similar orbital periods also show unexpectedly low mass transfer rates, even though selection effects disfavor the discovery of binaries with these properties. We present the discovery and characterization of six short-period, transiting giant planets from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) -- TOI-1811 (TIC 376524552), TOI-2025 (TIC 394050135), TOI-2145 (TIC 88992642), TOI-2152 (TIC 395393265), TOI-2154 (TIC 428787891), & TOI-2497 (TIC 97568467). Radio continuum observations offer a new window on compact objects in globular clusters compared to typical X-ray or optical studies. As part of the MAVERIC survey, we have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to carry out a deep (median central noise level of approximately 4 microJy per beam) radio continuum survey of 26 southern globular clusters at central frequencies of 5.5 and 9.0 GHz. This paper presents a catalogue of 1285 radio continuum sources in the fields of these 26 clusters. Considering the surface density of background sources, we find significant evidence for a population of radio sources in seven of the 26 clusters, and also identify at least 11 previously known compact objects (6 pulsars and 5 X-ray binaries). While the overall density of radio continuum sources with 7.25-GHz flux densities greater than about 20 microJy in typical globular clusters is relatively low, the survey has already led to the discovery of several exciting compact binaries, including a candidate ultracompact black hole X-ray binary in 47 Tuc. Many of the unclassified radio sources near the centres of the clusters are likely to be true cluster sources, and multi-wavelength follow-up will be necessary to classify these objects and better understand the demographics of accreting compact binaries in globular clusters., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The MAVERIC survey is the first deep radio continuum imaging survey of Milky Way globular clusters, with a central goal of finding and classifying accreting compact binaries, including stellar-mass black holes. Here we present radio source catalogs for 25 clusters with ultra-deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations. The median observing time was 10 hr per cluster, resulting in typical rms sensitivities of 2.3 and 2.1 uJy per beam at central frequencies of 5.0 and 7.2 GHz, respectively. We detect nearly 1300 sources in our survey at 5 sigma, and while many of these are likely to be background sources, we also find strong evidence for an excess of radio sources in some clusters. The radio spectral index distribution of sources in the cluster cores differs from the background, and shows a bimodal distribution. We tentatively classify the steep-spectrum sources (those much brighter at 5.0 GHz) as millisecond pulsars and the flat-spectrum sources as compact or other kinds of binaries. These provisional classifications will be solidified with the future addition of X-ray and optical data. The outer regions of our images represent a deep, relatively wide field (~ 0.4/sq. deg) and high resolution C band background survey, and we present source counts calculated for this area. We have discovered a new X-ray emitting compact binary that is the likely counterpart to the unassociated Fermi-LAT GeV $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J1120.0-2204, the second brightest Fermi source that still remains formally unidentified. Using optical spectroscopy with the SOAR telescope, we have identified a warm ($T_{\textrm{eff}}\sim8500$ K) companion in a 15.1-hr orbit around an unseen primary, which is likely a yet-undiscovered millisecond pulsar. A precise Gaia parallax shows the binary is nearby, at a distance of only $\sim 820$ pc. Unlike the typical "spider" or white dwarf secondaries in short-period millisecond pulsar binaries, our observations suggest the $\sim 0.17\,M_{\odot}$ companion is in an intermediate stage, contracting on the way to becoming an extremely low-mass helium white dwarf (a "pre-ELM" white dwarf). Although the companion is apparently unique among confirmed or candidate millisecond pulsar binaries, we use binary evolution models to show that in $\sim 2$ Gyr, the properties of the binary will match those of several millisecond pulsar-white dwarf binaries with very short ($< 1$ d) orbital periods. The Galactic globular cluster NGC 3201 is the first Galactic globular cluster observed to host dynamically-confirmed stellar-mass black holes, containing two confirmed and one candidate black hole. This result indicates that globular clusters can retain black holes, which has important implications for globular cluster evolution. NGC 3201 has been observed as part of the MAVERIC survey of Galactic globular clusters. We use these data to confirm that there is no radio or X-ray detection of the three black holes, and present the first radio and X-ray limits on these sources. These limits indicate that any accretion present is at an extremely low rate and may be extremely inefficient. In particular, for the system ACS ID #21859, by assuming the system is tidally locked and any accretion is through the capture of the companion's winds, we constrain the radiative efficiency of any accretion to $\leq1.5\times10^{-5}$. We also combine the radio and X-ray source catalogues from the MAVERIC survey with the existing MUSE spectroscopic surveys and the HUGS catalogue of NGC 3201 to provide a catalogue of 42 multiwavelength sources in this cluster. We explore the observational appearance of the merger of a low-mass star with a white dwarf (WD) binary companion. We are motivated by Schreiber et al. (2016), who found that multiple tensions between the observed properties of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and standard evolution models are resolved if a large fraction of CV binaries merge as a result of unstable mass transfer. Tidal disruption of the secondary forms a geometrically thick disk around the WD, which subsequently accretes at highly super-Eddington rates. Analytic estimates and numerical hydrodynamical simulations reveal that outflows from the accretion flow unbind a large fraction >~ 90% of the secondary at velocities ~500-1000 km/s within days of the merger. Hydrogen recombination in the expanding ejecta powers optical transient emission lasting about a month with a luminosity > 1e38 erg/s, similar to slow classical novae and luminous red novae from ordinary stellar mergers. Over longer timescales the mass accreted by the WD undergoes hydrogen shell burning, inflating the remnant into a giant of luminosity ~300-5000 L_sun, effective temperature T_eff ~ 3000 K and lifetime ~1e4-1e5 yr. We predict that ~1e3-1e4 Milky Way giants are CV merger products, potentially distinguishable by atypical surface abundances. We explore whether any Galactic historical slow classical novae are masquerading CV mergers by identifying four such post-nova systems with potential giant counterparts for which a CV merger origin cannot be ruled out. Peaking at 3.7 mag on 2020 July 11, YZ Ret was the second-brightest nova of the decade. The nova's moderate proximity (2.7 kpc from Gaia) provided an opportunity to explore its multi-wavelength properties in great detail. Here we report on YZ Ret as part of a long-term project to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for high-energy emission in classical novae. We use simultaneous Fermi/LAT and NuSTAR observations complemented by XMM-Newton X-ray grating spectroscopy to probe the physical parameters of the shocked ejecta and the nova-hosting white dwarf. The XMM-Newton observations revealed a super-soft X-ray emission which is dominated by emission lines of CV, CVI, NVI, NVII, and OVIII rather than a blackbody-like continuum, suggesting CO-composition of the white dwarf in a high-inclination binary system. Fermi/LAT detected YZ Ret for 15 days with the gamma-ray spectrum best described by a power law with an exponential cut-off at 1.9 +/-0.6 GeV. In stark contrast with theoretical predictions and in keeping with previous NuSTAR observations of Fermi-detected classical novae (V5855 Sgr and V906 Car), the 3.5-78 keV X-ray emission is found to be two orders of magnitude fainter than the GeV emission. The X-ray emission observed by NuSTAR is consistent with a single-temperature thermal plasma. We detect no non-thermal tail of the GeV emission expected to extend down to the NuSTAR band. We present radio observations (1--40 GHz) for 36 classical novae, representing data from over five decades compiled from the literature, telescope archives, and our own programs. Our targets display a striking diversity in their optical parameters (e.g., spanning optical fading timescales, t_2 = 1--263 days), and we find a similar diversity in the radio light curves. Using a brightness temperature analysis, we find that radio emission from novae is a mixture of thermal and synchrotron emission, with non-thermal emission observed at earlier times. We identify high brightness temperature emission (T_B > 5x10^4 K) as an indication of synchrotron emission in at least 9 (25%) of the novae. We find a class of synchrotron-dominated novae with mildly evolved companions, exemplified by V5589 Sgr and V392 Per, that appear to be a bridge between classical novae with dwarf companions and symbiotic binaries with giant companions. Four of the novae in our sample have two distinct radio maxima (the first dominated by synchrotron and the later by thermal emission), and in four cases the early synchrotron peak is temporally coincident with a dramatic dip in the optical light curve, hinting at a common site for particle acceleration and dust formation. Transitional millisecond pulsars are millisecond pulsars that switch between a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar state and an accretion-powered X-ray binary state, and are thought to be an evolutionary stage between neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. So far, only three confirmed systems have been identified in addition to a handful of candidates. We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of the low-mass X-ray binary NGC 6652B in the globular cluster NGC 6652, including simultaneous radio and X-ray observations taken by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and optical spectroscopy and photometry. This source is the second brightest X-ray source in NGC 6652 ($L_{\textrm{X}}\sim1.8\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and is known to be variable. We observe several X-ray flares over the duration of our X-ray observations, in addition to persistent radio emission and occasional radio flares. Simultaneous radio and X-ray data show no clear evidence of anti-correlated variability. Optical spectra of NGC 6652B indicate variable, broad H $\alpha$ emission which transitions from double-peaked emission to absorption over a time-scale of hours. We consider a variety of possible explanations for the source behaviour, and conclude that based on the radio and X-ray luminosities, short time-scale variability and X-ray flaring, and optical spectra, NGC 6652B is best explained as a transitional millisecond pulsar candidate that displays prolonged X-ray flaring behaviour. The discovery that many classical novae produce detectable GeV $\gamma$-ray emission has raised the question of the role of shocks in nova eruptions. Here we use radio observations of nova V809 Cep (Nova Cep 2013) with the Jansky Very Large Array to show that it produced non-thermal emission indicative of particle acceleration in strong shocks for more than a month starting about six weeks into the eruption, quasi-simultaneous with the production of dust. Broadly speaking, the radio emission at late times -- more than a six months or so into the eruption -- is consistent with thermal emission from $10^{-4} M_\odot$ of freely expanding, $10^4$~K ejecta. At 4.6 and 7.4 GHz, however, the radio light-curves display an initial early-time peak 76 days after the discovery of the eruption in the optical ($t_0$). The brightness temperature at 4.6 GHz on day 76 was greater than $10^5 K$, an order of magnitude above what is expected for thermal emission. We argue that the brightness temperature is the result of synchrotron emission due to internal shocks within the ejecta. The evolution of the radio spectrum was consistent with synchrotron emission that peaked at high frequencies before low frequencies, suggesting that the synchrotron from the shock was initially subject to free-free absorption by optically thick ionized material in front of the shock. Dust formation began around day 37, and we suggest that internal shocks in the ejecta were established prior to dust formation and caused the nucleation of dust.

We report the discovery of a new low-mass X-ray binary near the center of the unassociated Fermi GeV gamma-ray source 4FGL J0540.0-7552. The source shows the persistent presence of an optical accretion disk and exhibits extreme X-ray and optical variability. It also has an X-ray spectrum well-fit by a hard power law with a Gamma = 1.8 and a high ratio of X-ray to gamma-ray flux. Together, these properties are consistent with the classification of the binary as a transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) in the sub-luminous disk state. Uniquely among the candidate tMSPs, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 shows consistent optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray evidence for having undergone a state change, becoming substantially brighter in the optical and X-rays and fainter in GeV gamma-rays sometime in mid-2013. In its current sub-luminous disk state, and like one other candidate tMSP in the Galactic field, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 appears to always be in an X-ray "flare mode", indicating that this could be common phenomenology for tMSPs., Comment: ApJ in press

We investigate potential correlations between radio source counts (after background corrections) of 22 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) from the MAVERIC survey, and stellar encounter rates ($\Gamma$) and masses ($M$) of the GCs. Applying a radio luminosity limit of $L_\mathrm{lim}=5.0\times 10^{27}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$, we take a census of radio sources in the core and those within the half-light radius. By following a maximum likelihood method and adopting a simplified linear model, we find an unambiguous dependence of core radio source counts on $\Gamma$ and/or $M$ at 90% confidence, but no clear dependence of source counts within the half-light radius on either $\Gamma$ or $M$. Five of the identified radio sources in cores above our adopted limit are millisecond pulsars or neutron star X-ray binaries (XRBs), the dependence of which on $\Gamma$ is well-known, but another is a published black hole (BH) XRB candidate, and ten others are not identified. Accounting for the verified cluster members increases the significance of correlation with $M$ and/or $\Gamma$ (to 99% confidence), for fits to core and half-light region source counts, while excluding a dependence on $\Gamma$ alone at 90% (core) and 68% (half-light) confidence. This is consistent with published dynamical simulations of GC BH interactions that argue $\Gamma$ will be a poor predictor of the distribution of accreting BHs in GCs. Future multiwavelength follow-up to verify cluster membership will enable stronger constraints on the dependence of radio source classes on cluster properties, promising a new view on the dynamics of BHs in GCs., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present X-ray and radio observations of what may be the closest type Iax supernova (SN) to date, SN 2014dt (d=12.3-19.3 Mpc) and provide tight constraints on the radio and X-ray emission. We infer a specific radio luminosity of < (1.0-2.4)E25 erg/s/Hz at a frequency of 7.5 GHz and a X-ray luminosity < 1.4E38 erg/s (0.3-10 keV) at ~38-48 days post-explosion. We interpret these limits in the context of Inverse Compton (IC) emission and synchrotron emission from a population of electrons accelerated at the forward shock of the explosion in a power-law distribution $N_e(\gamma_e)\propto \gamma_e^{-p}$ with p=3. Our analysis constrains the progenitor system mass-loss rate to be smaller than 5E-6 solar masses per year at distances where r <= 1E16 cm for an assumed wind velocity v=100 km/s, and a fraction of post-shock energy into magnetic fields and relativistic electrons of epsilon_B=0.01 and epsilon_e=0.1, respectively. This result rules out some of the parameter space of symbiotic giant star companions, and it is consistent with the low mass-loss rates expected from He-star companions. Our calculations also show that the improved sensitivity of the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) is needed to probe the very low-density media characteristic of He stars that are the leading model for binary stellar companions of white dwarfs giving origin to type Iax SNe., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 9 pages and 7 figures

The progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are debated, particularly the evolutionary state of the binary companion that donates mass to the exploding carbon-oxygen white dwarf. In previous work, we presented hydrodynamic models and optically thin radio synchrotron light-curves of SNe Ia interacting with detached, confined shells of CSM, representing CSM shaped by novae. In this work, we extend these light-curves to the optically thick regime, considering both synchrotron self-absorption and free-free absorption. We obtain simple formulae to describe the evolution of optical depth seen in the simulations, allowing optically thick light-curves to be approximated for arbitrary shell properties. We then demonstrate the use of this tool by interpreting published radio data. First, we consider the non-detection of PTF11kx - an SN Ia known to have a detached, confined shell - and find that the non-detection is consistent with current models for its CSM, and that observations at a later time would have been useful for this event. Secondly, we statistically analyze an ensemble of radio non-detections for SNe Ia with no signatures of interaction, and find that shells with masses $(10^{-4}-0.3)~M_\odot$ located $(10^{15}-10^{16})$ cm from the progenitor are currently not well constrained by radio datasets, due to their dim, rapidly-evolving light-curves., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted; companion Python tools available on github (see text)

The unprecedented sky coverage and observing cadence of the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) has resulted in the discovery and continued monitoring of a large sample of Galactic transients. The vast majority of these are accretion-powered dwarf nova outbursts in cataclysmic variable systems, but a small subset are thermonuclear-powered classical novae. Despite improved monitoring of the Galaxy for novae from ASAS-SN and other surveys, the observed Galactic nova rate is still lower than predictions. One way classical novae could be missed is if they are confused with the much larger population of dwarf novae. Here, we examine the properties of 1617 dwarf nova outbursts detected by ASAS-SN and compare them to classical novae. We find that the mean classical nova brightens by ~11 magnitudes during outburst, while the mean dwarf nova brightens by only ~5 magnitudes, with the outburst amplitude distributions overlapping by roughly 15%. For the first time, we show that the amplitude of an outburst and the time it takes to decline by two magnitudes from maximum are positively correlated for dwarf nova outbursts. For classical novae, we find that these quantities are negatively correlated, but only weakly, compared to the strong anti-correlation of these quantities found in some previous work. We show that, even if located at large distances, only a small number of putative dwarf novae could be mis-classified classical novae suggesting that there is minimal confusion between these populations. The delay-time distribution (DTD) is the occurrence rate of a class of objects as a function of time after a hypothetical burst of star formation. DTDs are mainly used as a statistical test of stellar evolution scenarios for supernova progenitors, but they can be applied to many other classes of astronomical objects. We calculate the first DTD for RR Lyrae variables using 29,810 RR Lyrae from the OGLE-IV survey and a map of the stellar-age distribution (SAD) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We find that $\sim 46\%$ of the OGLE-IV RR Lyrae are associated with delay-times older than 8 Gyr (main-sequence progenitor masses less than 1 M$_{\odot}$), and consistent with existing constraints on their ages, but surprisingly about $51\%$ of RR Lyrae appear have delay times $1.2-8$ Gyr (main-sequence masses between $1 - 2$ M$_{\odot}$ at LMC metallicity). This intermediate-age signal also persists outside the Bar-region where crowding is less of a concern, and we verified that without this signal, the spatial distribution of the OGLE-IV RR Lyrae is inconsistent with the SAD map of the LMC. Since an intermediate-age RR Lyrae channel is in tension with the lack of RR Lyrae in intermediate-age clusters (noting issues with small-number statistics), and the age-metallicity constraints of LMC stars, our DTD result possibly indicates that systematic uncertainties may still exist in SAD measurements of old-stellar populations, perhaps stemming from the construction methodology or the stellar evolution models used. We have discovered a new candidate redback millisecond pulsar binary near the center of the error ellipse of the bright unassociated Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J0940.3-7610. The candidate counterpart is a variable optical source that also shows faint X-ray emission. Optical photometric and spectroscopic monitoring with the SOAR telescope indicates the companion is a low-mass star in a 6.5-hr orbit around an invisible primary, showing both ellipsoidal variations and irradiation and consistent with the properties of known redback millisecond pulsar binaries. Given the orbital parameters, preliminary modeling of the optical light curves suggests an edge-on inclination and a low-mass ($\sim 1.2$ - $1.4\,M_{\odot}$) neutron star, along with a secondary mass somewhat more massive than typical $\gtrsim 0.4\,M_{\odot}$. This combination of inclination and secondary properties could make radio eclipses more likely for this system, explaining its previous non-discovery in radio pulsation searches. Hence 4FGL J0940.3-7610 may be a strong candidate for a focused search for $\gamma$-ray pulsations to enable the future detection of a millisecond pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Accepted to ApJ

We survey our understanding of classical novae: non-terminal, thermonuclear eruptions on the surfaces of white dwarfs in binary systems. The recent and unexpected discovery of GeV gamma-rays from Galactic novae has highlighted the complexity of novae and their value as laboratories for studying shocks and particle acceleration. We review half a century of nova literature through this new lens, and conclude: --The basics of the thermonuclear runaway theory of novae are confirmed by observations. The white dwarf sustains surface nuclear burning for some time after runaway, and until recently, it was commonly believed that radiation from this nuclear burning solely determines the nova's bolometric luminosity. --The processes by which novae eject material from the binary system remain poorly understood. Mass loss from novae is complex (sometimes fluctuating in rate, velocity, and morphology) and often prolonged in time over weeks, months, or years. --The complexity of the mass ejection leads to gamma-ray producing shocks internal to the nova ejecta. When gamma-rays are detected (around optical maximum), the shocks are deeply embedded and the surrounding gas is very dense. --Observations of correlated optical and gamma-ray light curves confirm that the shocks are radiative and contribute significantly to the bolometric luminosity of novae. The detection of GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from Galactic novae by $Fermi$-LAT has become routine since 2010, and is generally associated with shocks internal to the nova ejecta. These shocks are also expected to heat plasma to $\sim 10^7$ K, resulting in detectable X-ray emission. In this paper, we investigate 13 $\gamma$-ray emitting novae observed with the Neil Gehrels $Swift$ Observatory, searching for 1-10 keV X-ray emission concurrent with $\gamma$-ray detections. We also analyze $\gamma$-ray observations of novae V407 Lup (2016) and V357 Mus (2018). We find that most novae do eventually show X-ray evidence of hot shocked plasma, but not until the $\gamma$-rays have faded below detectability. We suggest that the delayed rise of the X-ray emission is due to large absorbing columns and/or X-ray suppression by corrugated shock fronts. The only nova in our sample with a concurrent X-ray/$\gamma$-ray detection is also the only embedded nova (V407 Cyg). This exception supports a scenario where novae with giant companions produce shocks with external circumbinary material and are characterized by lower density environments, in comparison with novae with dwarf companions where shocks occur internal to the dense ejecta., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, submitted to ApJ

We report on the Fermi-LAT detection (with ~5.7 sigma significance) as well as the multi-wavelength analysis of the 2017 nova eruption V549 Vel. Unlike the recent shock-powered novae ASASSN-16ma and V906 Car, the optical and gamma-ray light curves of V549 Vel show no correlation, likely implying relatively weak shocks in the eruption. Gaia detected a candidate progenitor of V549 Vel and found a parallax measurement of 1.91+/-0.39 mas, equivalent to a mode distance of d=560 pc (90% credible interval of 380-1050 pc). The progenitor was also observed by the 2MASS and WISE surveys. When adopting the Gaia distance, the spectral energy distribution of the progenitor is close to that of a G-type star. Swift/XRT detected the supersoft X-ray emission of the nova (kT=30-40 keV) since day 236, and the inferred blackbody size is comparable to that of other novae assuming d=560 pc (i.e., R_bb~5*10^8 cm). However, there is also an unknown astrometric excess noise of 3.2 mas found in the Gaia data, and the inferred distance becomes controversial. If the Gaia distance is accurate, the gamma-ray luminosity of V549 Vel will be as low as L_gamma~4*10^33 erg/s, making it the least luminous gamma-ray nova known so far. This may imply that the shock properties responsible for the gamma-ray emission in V549 Vel are different from those of the more luminous events. If the nova is located farther away, it is likely a symbiotic system with a giant companion as the observed progenitor., Comment: 10 pages, including 5 figures and 1 tables. We report the discovery of a variable optical and X-ray source within the error ellipse of the previously unassociated Fermi Large Area Telescope $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J0407.7--5702. A 22 ksec observation from XMM-Newton/EPIC shows an X-ray light curve with rapid variability and flaring. The X-ray spectrum is well-fit by a hard power law with $\Gamma = 1.7$. Optical photometry taken over several epochs is dominated by aperiodic variations of moderate amplitude. Optical spectroscopy with SOAR and Gemini reveals a blue continuum with broad and double-peaked H and He emission, as expected for an accretion disk around a compact binary. Overall, the optical, X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray properties of 4FGL J0407.7--5702 are consistent with a classification as a transitional millisecond pulsar in the sub-luminous disk state. We also present evidence that this source is more distant than other confirmed or candidate transitional millisecond pulsar binaries, and that the ratio of X-ray to $\gamma$-ray flux is a promising tool to help identify such binaries, indicating that a more complete census for these rare systems is becoming possible., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 11 pages, 8 figures

We present a deep ($\sim 330~\mathrm{ks}$) {\it Chandra} survey of the Galactic globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099). Combining the new Cycle 18 with the previous Cycle 3 observations we report a total of 10 new X-ray point sources within the $1.03$ arcmin half-light radius, compiling an extended X-ray catalogue of a total of 23 sources. We incorporate imaging observations by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and the {\it Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array} from the MAVERIC survey to search for optical and radio counterparts to the new and old sources. Two X-ray sources are found to have a radio counterpart, including the known millisecond pulsar PSR J2140$-$2310A, the radio position of which also matches a previously reported faint optical counterpart which is slightly redder than the main sequence. We found optical counterparts to $18$ of the $23$ X-ray sources, identifying $2$ new cataclysmic variables (CVs), $5$ new CV candidates, $2$ new candidates of RS CVn type of active binary (AB), and $2$ new candidates of BY Dra type of AB. The remaining unclassified X-ray sources are likely background active galactic nuclei (AGN), as their number is consistent with the expected number of AGN at our X-ray sensitivity. Finally, our analysis of radial profiles of different source classes suggests that bright CVs are more centrally distributed than faint CVs in M30, consistent with other core-collapsed globular clusters., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Owing to its massive, dense core, Terzan 5 has the richest population of millisecond pulsars known among Galactic globular clusters. Here we report new deep $2-8\,$GHz radio continuum observations of Terzan\,5 obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We have identified a total of 24 sources within the cluster half-light radius, including 17 within the core radius. 19 are associated with previously studied millisecond pulsars and X-ray binaries. Three of the new radio sources have steep radio spectra and are located within the cluster core, as expected for millisecond pulsars. These three sources have hard X-ray photon indices ($\Gamma=1.3-1.5$) and highly variable X-ray emission, suggesting they are binary millisecond pulsars belonging to the spider class. For the most X-ray luminous of these sources, the redback spider classification is confirmed by its X-ray light curve, which shows an orbital period of 12.32 hr and double peaked structure around X-ray maximum. The likely discovery of bright binary millisecond pulsars in a well-studied cluster like Terzan 5 highlights how deep radio continuum imaging can complement pulsar search and timing observations in finding probable eclipsing systems. The other new radio source in the core has a flat radio spectrum and is X-ray faint ($L_X \approx 2\times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$) with a photon index $\Gamma=2.1\pm0.5$, consistent with the properties expected for a quiescent stellar-mass black hole X-ray binary., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Although it is well-established that some extragalactic radio sources are time-variable, the properties of this radio variability, and its connection with host galaxy properties, remain to be explored---particularly for faint sources. Here we present an analysis of radio variable sources from the CHILES Variable and Explosive Radio Dynamic Evolution Survey (CHILES VERDES)---a partner project of the 1.4 GHz COSMOS \ion{H}{1} Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). CHILES VERDES provides an unprecedented combination of survey depth, duration, and cadence, with 960 hrs of 1--2 GHz continuum VLA data obtained over 209 epochs between 2013 and 2019 in a 0.44 deg$^2$ section of the well-studied extragalactic deep field, COSMOS. We identified 18 moderate-variability sources (showing $10-30\%$ flux density variation) and 40 lower variability sources (2-10$\%$ flux density variation). They are mainly active galactic nuclei (AGN) with radio luminosities in the range of $10^{22}-10^{27}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ based on cross-matching with COSMOS multi-wavelength catalogs. The moderate-variability sources span redshifts $z=0.22-1.56$, have mostly flat radio spectra ($\alpha>-0.5$), and vary on timescales ranging from days to years. Lower-variability sources have similar properties, but have generally higher radio luminosities than the moderate-variability sources, extend to $z = 2.8$, and have steeper radio spectra ($\alpha<-0.5$). No star-forming galaxy showed statistically significant variability in our analysis. The observed variability likely originates from scintillation on short ($\sim$week) timescales, and Doppler-boosted intrinsic AGN variability on long (month--year) timescales., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures. X-ray observations of shocked gas in novae can provide a useful probe of the dynamics of the ejecta. Here we report on X-ray observations of the nova V959 Mon, which was also detected in GeV gamma-rays with the Fermi satellite. We find that the X-ray spectra are consistent with a two-temperature plasma model with non-solar abundances. We interpret the X-rays as due to shock interaction between the slow equatorial torus and the fast polar outflow that were inferred from radio observations of V959 Mon. We further propose that the hotter component, responsible for most of the flux, is from the reverse shock driven into the fast outflow. We find a systematic drop in the column density of the absorber between Days 60 and 140, consistent with the expectations for such a picture. We present intriguing evidence for a delay of around 40 days in the expulsion of the ejecta from the central binary. Moreover, we infer a relatively small (a few times 10$^{-6}$ Msun) ejecta mass ahead of the shock, considerably lower than the mass of 10$^4$ K gas inferred from radio observations. Finally, we infer that the dominant X-ray shock was likely not radiative at the time of our observations, and that the shock power was considerably higher than the observed X-ray luminosity. Shock interaction has been argued to play a role in powering a range of optical transients, including supernovae (particularly the superluminous class), classical novae, stellar mergers, tidal disruption events, and fast blue optical transients. These same shocks can accelerate relativistic ions, generating high-energy neutrino and gamma-ray emission via hadronic pion production. The recent discovery of time-correlated optical and gamma-ray emission in classical novae has revealed the important role of radiative shocks in powering these events, enabling an unprecedented view of the properties of ion acceleration, including its efficiency and energy spectrum, under similar physical conditions to shocks in extragalactic transients. Here we introduce a model for connecting the radiated optical fluence of non-relativistic transients to their maximal neutrino and gamma-ray fluence. We apply this technique to a wide range of extragalactic transient classes in order to place limits on their contributions to the cosmological high-energy gamma-ray and neutrino backgrounds. Based on a simple model for diffusive shock acceleration at radiative shocks, calibrated to novae, we demonstrate that several of the most luminous transients can accelerate protons up to energies $E_{\rm max} \gtrsim 10^{16}$ eV, sufficient to contribute to the IceCube astrophysical background. Furthermore, several of the considered sources$-$particularly hydrogen-poor supernovae$-$may serve as "hidden" gamma-ray sources due to the high gamma-ray opacity of their ejecta, evading constraints imposed by the non-blazar Fermi-LAT background. However, adopting an ion acceleration efficiency $\sim$ 0.3-1$\%$ motivated by nova observations, we find that currently known classes of non-relativistic, potentially shock-powered transients contribute at most a few percent of the total IceCube background., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Shocks in gamma-ray emitting classical novae are expected to produce bright thermal and non-thermal X-rays. We test this prediction with simultaneous NuSTAR and Fermi/LAT observations of nova V906 Car, which exhibited the brightest GeV gamma-ray emission to date. The nova is detected in hard X-rays while it is still gamma-ray bright, but contrary to simple theoretical expectations, the detected 3.5-78 keV emission of V906 Car is much weaker than the simultaneously observed >100 MeV emission. No non-thermal X-ray emission is detected, and our deep limits imply that the gamma-rays are likely hadronic. After correcting for substantial absorption (N_H ~ 2 x 10^23 cm^-2), the thermal X-ray luminosity (from a 9 keV optically-thin plasma) is just ~2% of the gamma-ray luminosity. We consider possible explanations for the low thermal X-ray luminosity, including the X-rays being suppressed by corrugated, radiative shock fronts or the X-rays from the gamma-ray producing shock are hidden behind an even larger absorbing column (N_H >10^25 cm^-2). Adding XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations to our analysis, we find that the evolution of the intrinsic X-ray absorption requires the nova shell to be expelled 24 days after the outburst onset. The X-ray spectra show that the ejecta are enhanced in nitrogen and oxygen, and the nova occurred on the surface of a CO-type white dwarf. We see no indication of a distinct super-soft phase in the X-ray lightcurve, which, after considering the absorption effects, may point to a low mass of the white dwarf hosting the nova., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables; accepted to MNRAS

Globular clusters host a variety of lower-luminosity ($L_X<10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$) X-ray sources, including accreting neutron stars and black holes, millisecond pulsars, cataclysmic variables, and chromospherically active binaries. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive catalog of more than 1100 X-ray sources in 38 Galactic globular clusters observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory's ACIS detector. The targets are selected to complement the MAVERIC survey's deep radio continuum maps of Galactic globular clusters. We perform photometry and spectral analysis for each source, determine a best-fit model, and assess the possibility of it being a foreground/background source based on its spectral properties and location in the cluster. We also provide basic assessments of variability. We discuss the distribution of X-ray binaries in globular clusters, their X-ray luminosity function, and carefully analyze systems with $L_X > 10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Among these moderately bright systems, we discover a new source in NGC 6539 that may be a candidate accreting stellar-mass black hole or a transitional millisecond pulsar. We show that quiescent neutron star LMXBs in globular clusters may spend ~2% of their lifetimes as transitional millisecond pulsars in their active ($L_X>10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$) state. Finally, we identify a substantial under-abundance of bright ($L_X>10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$) intermediate polars in globular clusters compared to the Galactic field, in contrast with the literature of the past two decades., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures, ApJ, in press. We report new simultaneous X-ray and radio continuum observations of 3FGL J0427.9-6704, a candidate member of the enigmatic class of transitional millisecond pulsars. These XMM-Newton and Australia Telescope Compact Array observations of this nearly edge-on, eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary were taken in the sub-luminous disk state at an X-ray luminosity of ~10^33(d/2.3kpc)^2 erg/s. Unlike the few well-studied transitional millisecond pulsars, which spend most of their disk state in a characteristic high or low accretion mode with occasional flares, 3FGL J0427.9-6704 stayed in the flare mode for the entire X-ray observation of ~20 hours, with the brightest flares reaching ~2*10^34 erg/s. The source continuously exhibited flaring activity on time-scales of ~10-100 sec in both the X-ray and optical/UV. No measurable time delay between the X-ray and optical/UV flares is observed, but the optical/UV flares last longer, and the relative amplitudes of the X-ray and optical/UV flares show a large scatter. The X-ray spectrum can be well-fit with a partially-absorbed power-law (Gamma~1.4-1.5), perhaps due to the edge-on viewing angle. Modestly variable radio continuum emission is present at all epochs, and is not eclipsed by the secondary, consistent with the presence of a steady radio outflow or jet. The simultaneous radio/X-ray luminosity ratio of 3FGL J0427.9-6704 is higher than any known transitional millisecond pulsars and comparable to that of stellar-mass black holes of the same X-ray luminosity, providing additional evidence that some neutron stars can be as radio-loud as black holes., Comment: 17 pages, including 10 figures and 3 tables. Classical novae are thermonuclear explosions that occur on the surfaces of white dwarf stars in interacting binary systems (Bode & Evans 2008). It has long been thought that the luminosity of classical novae is powered by continued nuclear burning on the surface of the white dwarf after the initial runaway (Gallaher & Starrfield 1978). However, recent observations of GeV $\gamma$-rays from classical novae have hinted that shocks internal to the nova ejecta may dominate the nova emission. Shocks have also been suggested to power the luminosity of events as diverse as stellar mergers (Metzger & Pejcha 2017), supernovae (Moriya et al. 2018), and tidal disruption events (Roth et al. 2016), but observational confirmation has been lacking. Here we report simultaneous space-based optical and $\gamma$-ray observations of the 2018 nova V906 Carinae (ASASSN-18fv), revealing a remarkable series of distinct correlated flares in both bands. The optical and $\gamma$-ray flares occur simultaneously, implying a common origin in shocks. During the flares, the nova luminosity doubles, implying that the bulk of the luminosity is shock-powered. Furthermore, we detect concurrent but weak X-ray emission from deeply embedded shocks, confirming that the shock power does not appear in the X-ray band and supporting its emergence at longer wavelengths. Using a 16.2 hr radio observation by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and archival Chandra data, we found $>5\sigma$ radio counterparts to 4 known and 3 new X-ray sources within the half-light radius ($r_\mathrm{h}$) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397. The previously suggested millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidate, U18, is a steep-spectrum ($S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha$; $\alpha=-2.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$) radio source with a 5.5 GHz flux density of $54.7\pm 4.3~\mathrm{\mu Jy}$. We argue that U18 is most likely a "hidden" MSP that is continuously hidden by plasma shocked at the collision between the winds from the pulsar and companion star. The nondetection of radio pulsations so far is probably the result of enhanced scattering in this shocked wind. On the other hand, we observed 5.5 GHz flux of the known MSP PSR J1740-5340 (U12) to decrease by a factor of $>2.8$ during epochs of 1.4 GHz eclipse, indicating that the radio flux is absorbed in its shocked wind. If U18 is indeed a pulsar whose pulsations are scattered, we note the contrast with U12's flux decrease in eclipse, which argues for two different eclipse mechanisms at the same radio frequency. In addition to U12 and U18, we also found radio associations for 5 other Chandra X-ray sources, four of which are likely background galaxies. We have imaged over 35 years of archival Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the nearby (d$_{\rm{L}}$ $=$ 3.15 Mpc) Type Ia supernovae SN\,1972E and SN\,1895B between 9 and 121 years post-explosion. No radio emission is detected, constraining the 8.5 GHz luminosities of SN\,1972E and SN\,1895B to be L$_{\nu,8.5\rm{GHz}}$ $<$ 6.0 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ 45 years post-explosion and L$_{\nu,8.5\rm{GHz}}$ $<$ 8.9 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ 121 years post-explosion, respectively. These limits imply a clean circumstellar medium (CSM), with $n$ $<$ 0.9 cm$^{-3}$ out to radii of a few $\times$ 10$^{18}$ cm, if the SN blastwave is expanding into uniform density material. Due to the extensive time coverage of our observations, we also constrain the presence of CSM shells surrounding the progenitor of SN\,1972E. We rule out essentially all medium and thick shells with masses of 0.05$-$0.3 M$_\odot$ at radii between $\sim$10$^{17}$ and 10$^{18}$ cm, and thin shells at specific radii with masses down to $\lesssim$0.01 M$_\odot$. These constraints rule out swaths of parameter space for a range of single and double degenerate progenitor scenarios, including recurrent nova, core-degenerate objects, ultra-prompt explosions and white dwarf (WD) mergers with delays of a few hundred years between the onset of merger and explosion. Allowed progenitors include WD-WD systems with a significant ($>$ 10$^{4}$ years) delay from the last episode of common envelope evolution and single degenerate systems undergoing recurrent nova, provided that the recurrence timescale i short and the system has been in the nova phase for $\gtrsim$10$^{4}$ yr, such that a large ($>$ 10$^{18}$ cm) cavity has been evacuated. Future multi-epoch observations of additional intermediate-aged Type Ia SNe will provide a comprehensive view of the large-scale CSM environments around these explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the discovery of a likely new redback millisecond pulsar binary associated with the \emph{Fermi} $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J2333.1--5527. Using optical photometric and spectroscopic observations from the SOAR telescope, we identify a low-mass, main sequence-like companion in a 6.9-hr, highly inclined orbit around a suspected massive neutron star primary. Archival XMM-Newton X-ray observations show this system has a hard power-law spectrum $\Gamma = 1.6\pm0.3$ and $L_X \sim 5 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with redback millisecond pulsar binaries. Our data suggest that for secondary masses typical of redbacks, the mass of the neutron star is likely well in excess of $\sim1.4\,M_{\odot}$, but future timing of the radio pulsar is necessary to bolster this tentative conclusion.
