Under short messaging service (SMS) spam is understood the unsolicited or undesired messages received on mobile phones. These SMS spams constitute a veritable nuisance to the mobile subscribers. This marketing practice also worries service providers in view of the fact that it upsets their clients or even causes them lose subscribers. By way of mitigating this practice, researchers have proposed several solutions for the detection and filtering of SMS spams. In this paper, we present a review of the currently available methods, challenges, and future research directions on spam detection techniques, filtering, and mitigation of mobile SMS spams. The existing research literature is critically reviewed and analyzed. The most popular techniques for SMS spam detection, filtering, and mitigation are compared, including the used data sets, their findings, and limitations, and the future research directions are discussed. This review is designed to assist expert researchers to identify open areas that need further improvement.

The importance and utilization of mobile communication are increasing day by day, and the short message service SMS is one of them. Although SMS is a widely used communication way, it brings together a major problem, which is SMS spam messages. SMS spams do not only use vain in the mobile communication traffic but also disturb users. Based on this fact, blacklisting methods, statistical methods which are built on the frequency of occurrence of words or characters, and machine learning methods have been employed. Because punishments and legal laws are not enough to solve this problem and the Group Special Mobile number of SMS spam can easily be changed, a content-based approach must be proposed. Content-based methods showed high success in spam e-mail filtering, but it is hard in the SMS spam filtering because SMS messages are extremely short and generally contains many abbreviations. In this study, an image processing method, local ternary pattern was improved to extract features from SMS messages in the feature extraction stage. In the proposed one-dimensional ternary patterns, firstly, text message was converted to their UTF-8 values. Later, each character its UTF-8 value in the message was compared with its neighbors. Two different feature sets were extracted from the results of these comparisons. Finally, some machine learning methods were employed to classify these features. In order to validate the proposed approach, three different SMS corpora were used. The achieved accuracies and other employee performance measures showed that the proposed approach, one-dimensional ternary patterns, can be effectively employed in SMS spam filtering. Security is a very important aspect in data communication. In the last decade, there was a rapid development in mobile phone technology. Smartphone have been equipped with various features and one of them is the short message service (SMS). However, messages sent via mobile phone networks pose threat to be accessed by people who do not have any authorization. Therefore, it is necessary to do research on the development of software to enhance the security of messages through message encryption and decryption features. This application uses Java programming language with SDK (Software Development Kit) Android and Android Studio 1.3.1 as an editor. The initial step of this research is to encrypt the original message to produce the ciphertext message. The second step is to decrypt ciphertext incoming messages to become genuine message. Results from this research are an Android-based application that can perform encryption and decryption of the SMS messages using the RC6 algorithm. With the application of cryptography for SMS messages, the expected level of information security of the message can be improved so that the message will be more secure from unauthorized access.

SMS spam detection is an important task where spam SMS messages are identified and filtered. As greater numbers of SMS messages are communicated every day, it is very difficult for a user to remember and correlate the newer SMS messages received in context to previously received SMS. SMS threads provide a solution to this problem. In this work the problem of SMS spam detection and thread identification is discussed and a state of the art clustering-based algorithm is presented. The work is planned in two stages. In the first stage the binary classification technique is applied to categorize SMS messages into two categories namely, spam and non-spam SMS; then, in the second stage, SMS clusters are created for non-spam SMS messages using non-negative matrix factorization and K-means clustering techniques. A threading-based similarity feature, that is, time between consecutive communications, is described for the identification of SMS threads, and the impact of the time threshold in thread identification is also analysed experimentally. Performance parameters like accuracy, precision, recall and F-measure are also evaluated. The SMS threads identified in this proposed work can be used in applications like SMS thread summarization, SMS folder classification and other SMS management-related tasks.

In today's fast world, mobile phones become very import for every human being. But almost everyone might have experienced with misplacing or losing of their mobile phones. So, the security of mobile phones are becomes more challenging one. To detect and monitoring of thefted or misplaced mobile phones, this paper develops an unique and efficient android application. The features of this technique are quite different from the existing tracker applications which would be helpful in tracing the lost mobile phones without the help of any protecting agency. The tracking application has the capability of SIM card detection, call monitoring, image capturing etc based on some predefined SMS. The application installed will be running in the background and won’t be shown in the task manager as well. Once the mobile phone is lost, this application enables the user to track a mobile device and to receive notification via SMS to a predefined number. Some specified formatted messages can be used to control the thefted mobile phone.

Although many ways to communicate with someone, SMS is still one of the popular media to send a message to someone. Not unlike the others, the messages sent can be known by the third party either tapping or the investigation. Unencrypted SMS can be easily obtained from communication providers so that they may be misused. Since the communication devices have been using Android operating system, they are programmable. There is various script can be inserted to devices to protect the data. One of them is Vernam Cipher. This method offers how to protect personal messages sent via SMS easily. It converts the message into an encrypted message shortly before sent. At the moment there tapping on the outside, the information is not easily understood its contents. The message is entirely secure.

From 2009, the market of smart devices has been rapidly increasing. These devices provide various services to users. The cloud messaging service, especially, is applied to many various services, and sends messages asynchronously. In the cloud messaging service, there are two methods for message transmission, message transmission based on an IP address and a publish/subscribe technique. Each technique uses basic messages in order to send messages to mobile devices. In this paper, the hybrid message transmission, based on user-customized analysis to reduce basic messages, is proposed. The hybrid message transmission uses Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and K-means algorithms for user-customized analysis, and determines the message transmission techniques in each timeslot.

This study introduces a direct and intuitive method to resist certain apps from sending SMS message stealthily. According to the heuristic analysis and observation, it is apparently that a SMS message, which has the textual content originated from user's entering manually, is obviously benign. We use this principle to design a serious of SMS examination and verification procedures, in order to force all SMS messages to be verified automatically before delivering them actually. A package named as Taurus, which is comprised of several new components, are developed in the Android framework in this study. The evaluation shows that Taurus, which examines all outgoing and detects potentially malicious SMS messages, has an excellent performance with reasonable memory usage overhead.

For mobile phone users, short message service (SMS) is the most commonly used text-based communication type on mobile devices. Users can interact with other users and services via SMS. For example, users can send private messages, use information services, apply for a job advertisement, conduct bank transactions, and so on. Users should be very careful when using SMS. During the sending of SMS, the message content should be aware that it can be captured and act accordingly. Based on these findings, the elderly, called as “Silent Generation” which represents 70 years or older adults, are text messaging much more than they did in the past. Therefore, they need solutions which are both simple and secure enough if there is a need to send sensitive information via SMS. In this study, we propose and develop an android application to secure text messages. The application has a simple and easy-to-use graphical user interface but provides significant security.

SMS (Short Message Service) is a facility for sending and receiving a short message of text by using a cell phone. SMS is a medium of communication that is easy to use and relatively cheap for SMS costs. Messages sent via SMS does not guarantee the security and confidential because messages that are sent using the default SMS application for your mobile phone is still an open text that has not been protected. Mobile phone is a hand-held communication device, the popularity of which has increased unbelievably over the past few years. This is not only because of the ability to make calls but also due to the Short Messaging Service (SMS) provided. Although, the number of people using mobiles is a myriad, there are still people who depend on landline phones for communication. The only way of communication in a landline phone is through voice/speech. Landline phones are not compatible with the short message service provided by mobile phones due to the absence of a screen to display the message received. E-mail is another means of communication, by which digital messages are sent from an author to one or more recipients. The SMS sent from a mobile phone to a landline number or other mobile phone is converted into voice and sent via e-mail to the recipient. The system aims at sending the text message, as a 3 step process First among them is pre-processing, second is synthesis of speech and finally, transmission. During pre-processing, the shorthand notations in the text message are converted into proper English form. In the second part, this pre-processed text is converted into speech. The final step covers the process of sending the synthesized voice message to the recipient. This system comes in handy when people with speech impairment want to send messages to other people, in the form of voice.

The population alarm systems do not represent a new concept. Since hundreds of years ago the man used either smoke signals generated from certain upper locations, visible from long distance, getting through acoustic systems placed on high buildings, until now when mass-media channels extended the possibilities by the television and radio. However, either one of those mentioned above requested the individual to be located at the alarming moment in the area of action of the alarm. Otherwise, the message has no efficiency. This limitation is currently solved by additional communication channels such as the internet and the mobile networks. Messages are now able to be sent to the mobile screen, and the user can reply to messages either by using the short message service (SMS) or by emailing to someone, to a server, to a center. From the general pattern of alarming the population on certain events, the medical applications represent a very important field. Messages are sent from the patient to a central medical center and back to the patient. This paper focuses on the value that virtual tools developed with LabVIEW brings to us.

Traditional compression algorithms appear to be largely unsuccessful with regards to short strings. In developing countries without connectivity to the web and data infrastructure, SMS remains one of the few ways of handling text-based information. With SMS service providers typically charging for SMS messages on a per-message basis, there exists a need to provide some form of short string compression, specifically with regards to highly structured data. This paper seeks to answer whether or not dictionary structures produce better results of compression than traditional algorithms with respect to highly structured data.To determine whether or not this approach would work, we developed a configurable parser that, when properly configured, accepts the various forms of structured data as provided by the client. We then compare the results to traditional compression mechanisms and measure the success.

Short messaging service (SMS) is perhaps the most popular mobile technology prevalent among students in higher education due to its ubiquitous nature and the capability of two-way communication. However, a major limitation in two-way text messaging is sending back a part of received data with the reply message. This limitation results in users of a mobile learning environment being unable to reply back to the correct destination. This article presents a two-way text messaging system that can be integrated into a learning management system (LMS) to provide an interactive learning experience to the user community. Initially, a database is integrated into the LMS that holds message information such as recipient’s phone number, message body and user data header. A specific port associated with the SMS is used to conceal and exchange data of a particular course unit. Subsequently, software in the student’s mobile device captures this message and sends back the reply message to the appropriate course unit allowing both teachers and students to view messages sent and replies received pertaining to a particular course. Results indicate the educational impact of the proposed system in improving the learning environment and benefits it offers to the community in a campus-wide implementation. As the use of Android mobile phones grows, botnets are increasingly targeting smartphone features, which calls for further research on mobile botnet detection. Short Message Service (SMS) has become increasingly targeted by a number of malicious applications ("apps") that have the ability to abuse SMS features in order to send spam, to transfer command and control (C&C) instructions, to distribute malicious applications via URLs embedded in text messages, to send text messages to premium-rate numbers, and to exploit smartphones. In this paper, we propose a SMS- based mobile botnet detection module that employs unsupervised learning techniques, using clustering algorithms to group SMS messages into four classes and to classify reported text messages to one of those four classes. The module also uses a robust and efficient behavioural profiling analysis to detect whether there is any correlation between cluster outputs and alerts from reported profiles. Rule- based correlations are used to label SMS messages as either normal or malicious.

SMS (Short Message Service) is a messaging service in the mobile communication environment. In sending messages via SMS, message security is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the authenticity of the messages. Messages are secured not only in the aspect of confidentiality, but also on how the delivered message is not altered by someone. To overcome these problems, digital signature is required. Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) with Boolean Permutation (BP) is one of the algorithms used for the process of adding and verifying the digital signature on the message. ECDSA is a public key cryptographic algorithm that is suitable to be implemented on devices with limited resources such as, mobile device or mobile phone. This is because the keys of ECDSA have relatively smaller than other public key cryptographic algorithms. ECDSA and Boolean Permutation can be implemented on mobile devices based on Android, and be able to verify the authenticity and maintain the integrity of SMS sent with several characteristics, such as, SMS that contains of letters, numbers, emoticons with the length of SMS that can be authenticated is 4 SMS - long in one delivery process (long messages).

Along with the popularity of telecommunication and mobile phone, short message (SMS) enters almost every human life. Meanwhile, each mobile phone client suffers from the harass of spam SMS. As the SMS service provider who is in charge of all industry SMS in east China, Dahan Tricom Corporation always invest much in anti spam SMS research. Recent years, we upgrade our anti-spam filter to semantic level. The core technology is described in this paper. Unlike other anti spam filter, such as anti spam emails, the anti spam SMS filter must face many difficulties oriented by SMS itself. Since SMS contains only 70 Chinese characters or 140 English letters at the most, it is always lack of semantic information. Also, vocal expressions often appear in SMS. In addition, the industry SMS often contains proper terms related to specific industry field. The anti spam SMS filter in this paper first leverages Vector Space Model (VSM) as its foundation technologies. Then, many modifications are made in the process in VSM method to address the difficulties of spam SMS filtering issue. Finally, the experiment result turns out to be acceptable in our commercial production environment.

International audience; In urban areas, the population density is still growing (the population density starts exceeding 20.000 inhabitants per km²), and so, the density of mobile users becomes very important. People are moving from home to work, from work to active places. One can take benefit of the mobility and the density to justify DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) approach protocol to convey SMS (or alternative messaging services) traffic. Indeed, the mobility of users, especially during the day, create an ad hoc mobile network where the nodes are the smartphones hold by mobile clients. In this paper, their performance evaluations are based on a measurement and analysis of SMS traces coming from a nationwide cellular telecommunication operator during a two month period, we propose several DTN like basic network protocols for delivering SMS. We perform a temporal and spatial analysis of the Mexico City cellular network considering geolocalized SMS to characterize the traffic. Such key characterization allows us to answer the question: is it possible to transmit SMS using phones as relay in a large city such as Mexico City? We define four network protocols to transmit SMS from a source to a destination. We study a mobile dataset including 8 Million users living in Mexico city. This gives us a precise estimation of the average transmission time and the global performance of our approach. Our analysis shows that after 30 min, half of the SMS are delivered successfully to destination. On the contrary to the cellular networks, we explain how much the potentiality of the mobile users network can take benefit from complementary properties such as the locality of SMS, the density of phones in Mexico City and the mobility of phone users. Moreover, we show that in a realistic scenario, our approach induces reasonable storage cost.

Short message is one of the most common communication media for mobile subscribers, so major mobile operators are devoted to improve their Short Message Service (SMS). However, the annoying and undesired messages, also named message spam or simply spam, not only worsen the users' experience, but also cause their complaints on SMS. In this paper, we present a novel Chinese SMS spam filtering framework based on AdaBoost algorithm to provide accurate and effective short messages classification. Three content-based weak filters are introduced to boost the performance of final classification decision. Results from Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis prove the proposed method has such advantages as higher efficiency and fewer parameters over those established SMS spam filtering methods. The application of the proposed method is expected to block the most spam for mobile subscribers and improve the service quality of SMS. With simple data processing and few training parameters, the proposed method can be applied into the practice of short text classification.

National audience; In this paper, from a measurement study and analysis of SMS based on traces coming from a nationwide cellular telecommunication operator during a two month period, we propose a DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) like network protocol for delivering SMS. Text messages sent via the Short Message Service (SMS) have revolutionized interpersonal communication. Recent years have also seen this service become a critical component of the security infrastructure, assisting with tasks including identity verification and second-factor authentication. At the same time, this messaging infrastructure has become dramatically more open and connected to public networks than ever before. However, the implications of this openness, the security practices of benign services, and the malicious misuse of this ecosystem are not well understood. In this paper, we provide the first longitudinal study to answer these questions, analyzing nearly 400,000 text messages sent to public online SMS gateways over the course of 14 months. From this data, we are able to identify not only a range of services sending extremely sensitive plaintext data and implementing low entropy solutions for one-use codes, but also offer insights into the prevalence of SMS spam and behaviors indicating that public gateways are primarily used for evading account creation policies that require verified phone numbers. This latter finding has significant implications for research combatting phone-verified account fraud and demonstrates that such evasion will continue to be difficult to detect and prevent.

In order to solve security problems such as user privacy information revealed after mobile phone lost, based on Android broadcast mechanism and backstage service technology, improved data storage way and self-startup mode of original mobile phone security software, added SMS encryption、 message broadcast priority interception and sandbox breakthrough technology, a mobile phone anti- theft tracking system with remote SMS management function was designed and implemented. The software not only owned basic anti-theft function of automatically remove sensitive information to protect user privacy security after mobile phone lost, but also silently monitored、GPS positioned for lost phone and got the latest contacts to track stolen phone. Real machine and simulator two experimental results show that the system is running well, can achieve desired design requirements.

Smartphones provide sensors and online data connectivity which makes them suitable for individual alert systems. A prototype for a car break-in alert system has been developed which can detect activity through smartphone accelerometers. The main goal of this system is to provide a low-cost alternative to expensive embedded systems with similar functionality. It can be controlled remotely solely through text messages from another mobile phone, which provides the option to use SMS instead of internet data access, in case the internet access cost (roaming charges) would be higher than the cost of an SMS message. In case of a detected break-in the system will send a text message to the user’s second phone. The user also can query information and request the location of the vehicle. The prototype has been tested in various situations, and data have been collected to distinguish different scenarios. The system has been programmed with MIT App Inventor and will be made available for free on the Google Play Store.

Mobile phones, currently, are one of the most extensive medium for the communication of any kind of information to the general public. Being one of the fastest spreading technologies, even to the remotest of areas, this highly sought after contemporary resource has started seeking its application in areas like healthcare, education, banking and internet crime. On this account Short Message Service via mobile phones can aid as an efficient tool to retrieve answers to various Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) in multiple domains. This application of text messages using mobile phones can be quite substantial only if the limitations that occur due to the large amount of noise in the SMS text can be eliminated. The solution proposed in this paper tries to effectively denoise the text using a similarity measure that aggregates results from prefix and suffix matching and a similarity ratio. To further refine these results supervised machine learning using Naive Bayes theorem on the N-Gram Markov model is implemented. For this we use the training database of FAQs in various domains to compute probabilities of consecutive occurrence of bigrams of words. Further, using set operations like intersection and minus the corrected query is matched in the FAQ corpus to generate the most proximate questions corresponding to it. To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed algorithm it was experimented upon a set of queries collected from some mobile phone users and the results were compared with that of certain existing methodologies.

In parallel to the using of resources implemented for distance learning, learners appreciate send and receive SMS. Although 4G offers very high data rates and adaptable quality of service, it does not support the SMS legacy service of GSM. 3GPP is currently specifying two architectures for SMS transmission: SMS over SGs, and SMS over IMS. However, when the learner uses a 4G service, to send or receive a SMS, he is first switched to 3G, which interrupts the current service on 4G. It is in this context that we propose a solution that permits to learner to send or receive SMS while continuing to use his service on the 4G network.

Rapid expansion of telecommunication technology has brought a very big benefit for us. In an aspect of information system security is one aspect that is very important. One mechanism that is done to secure this is by cryptographic techniques with methods of encryption and decryption using the algorithm Rivest Code 6 (RC-6) using Java in Android-Based Smartphone.With the existence of telecommunication technology, many constraints such as distance, location, or time can be overcome. One of the technological results in telecommunication technology is Short Message Service or usually known as SMS. By using an SMS, the subscribers can do some exchange of text messages over each other. In this final assignment, developed an aplication on a cell phone to modify a text into ciphertext so that information from the message is not known by others. For sending an SMS, system encrypts plaintext into ciphertext using a key that is inputed by a sender and then send it to destination number. For receiving an SMS, system decrypt ciphertext into plaintext using a key that is inputed by receiver and then displaying plaintext to receiver. This application can be used by someone who wants to send a secret information to other through an SMS without fear of information from those messages will be known by others. RC6 is one of the most sophisticated cryptographic algorithms and can still be said to be unresolved. The application uses the algorithm Rivest Code 6 (RC-6) with the Java programming language as data encryption method that can be applied to Android-based smartphones. The growth of the mobile phone users has led to a dramatic increase in SMS spam messages. Though in most parts of the world, mobile messaging channel is currently regarded as “clean” and trusted, on the contrast recent reports clearly indicate that the volume of mobile phone spam is dramatically increasing year by year. It is an evolving setback especially in the Middle East and Asia. SMS spam filtering is a comparatively recent errand to deal such a problem. It inherits many concerns and quick fixes from Email spam filtering. However it fronts its own certain issues and problems. This paper inspires to work on the task of filtering mobile messages as Ham or Spam for the Indian Users by adding Indian messages to the worldwide available SMS dataset. The paper analyses different machine learning classifiers on large corpus of SMS messages for Indian people.

As an open platform for mobile electronic devices, Android is experiencing a steady growth in the number of published applications (apps). Features of the Android platform have caught the attention of malicious users who have targeted the Short Message Service (SMS) to abuse its permissions. Various types of attack, referred to as botnets, can be executed without the user's knowledge by taking advantage of SMS messages, such as sending text message spam, transferring all command and control (C&C) instructions, launching denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, sending premium-rate SMS messages, or distributing malicious applications via URLs embedded in text messages. In this paper, we propose a real-time signature-based detection mechanism to combat SMS botnets, in which we first apply pattern-matching detection approaches for incoming and outgoing SMS text messages, and then use rule-based techniques to label unknown SMS messages as suspicious or normal. This approach was evaluated using over 12,000 test messages. It was able to detect all 747 malicious SMS messages in the dataset (100% detection rate with no false negatives). It also flagged 351 SMS messages as suspicious.

— SMS now becomes such a need for cellular phone users to communicate to other people. But the cellular phone users do not realize that the sent messages could be intercepted or changed by an unwanted party. Therefore it requires a security in sending an SMS message which is called cryptography. Given limited resources on cellular phone, then the implementation of symmetric cryptographic technique is suitable to meet the security needs of an SMS message. In symmetric cryptography, there is a symmetric key for encryption and decryption process. In order to secure exchange of symmetric keys in public channels is required of a protocol for key exchange. This research implements RC4 symmetric cryptography to encrypt and decrypt messages, while for key exchange is using Diffie-Hellman protocol. In this research, there are modifications to the Diffie-Hellman protocol that is the calculation of the public key and symmetric key to include cellular phone number as authentication. Whereas on a modified RC4 is the key where there is a combination with cellular phone number as authentication and key randomization, and then there are also modifications to the pseudorandom byte generator, encryption and decryption of the RC4 algorithm. The system is constructed using the Java programming language in the platform Micro Edition (J2ME) based MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.0. The research found that with the cellular phone number as authentication, key, encryption and decryption process automatically it is able to maintain confidentiality, data integrity, authentication and non-repudiation to the message. This paper presents a method used for increasing the security of sending text messages using public text communication services like email and SMS. It uses text encryption before sending the message through email or mobile phone (SMS), so, even the message is received and viewed by another unauthorized person, it cannot be understood. The application was implemented in LabVIEW and can be used for sending encrypted text email between two or more users, using public email services. For encryption, the proposed application uses text encryption methods like symmetrical and asymmetrical encryption, using private encryption key or private and public encryption key. For sending encrypted SMS using this application, the text message must be previously encrypted, and then the encrypted message will be copied to the text window of the application for sending SMS running on the mobile phone. The Blowfish encryption algorithm gives confidentiality to the message, the EasySMS protocol is used to gain authentication and MD5 hashing algorithm helps to achieve integrity of the messages. Blowfish algorithm utilizes only less battery power when compared to other encryption algorithms. The protocol prevents various attacks, including SMS disclosure, replay attack, man-in-the middle attack and over the air modification.
