Objective: Findings concerning the effects of hormone therapy (HT) on cognition and dementia are mixed, with some trials suggesting increased harm at older ages. Personality, like cognition, changes with dementia, but no clinical trials to date have examined the effects of HT on personality traits. This study aimed to determine the effects of HT on personality traits in older men and women., Method: Secondary data analysis was performed from randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over studies of menopausal HT in women and testosterone therapy (TT) in men. Participants were community-dwelling cognitively normal adults (mean age = 75.2 years), including 29 men and 22 women. Three months of hormone intervention (for women, 0.625 mg/day conjugated equine estrogen with or without 2.5 mg/day medroxyprogesterone acetate; for men, 200 mg intramuscular testosterone enanthate every 2 weeks) were crossed over with 3 months of identical placebo with a 3-month washout between intervention phases. The main outcome measure was neuroticism and conscientiousness personality domains and facets assessed with the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) after the active and placebo intervention phases., Results: In linear mixed-effect models, HT in women decreased conscientiousness ( p  < 0.01) and the conscientiousness facet of achievement striving ( p  < 0.01), and increased vulnerability, a facet of neuroticism ( p  < 0.05). Testosterone in men decreased conscientiousness ( p  < 0.05) and the conscientiousness facet of dutifulness ( p  < 0.05), and increased vulnerability ( p  < 0.05)., Conclusion: In a preliminary study of healthy older adults, HT and TT formulations produced adverse changes in vulnerability and conscientiousness facets that parallel personality changes in dementia.

Trait stability and maturation are fundamental principles of contemporary personality psychology and have been shown to hold across many cultures. However, it has proven difficult to move beyond these general findings to a detailed account of trait development. There are pervasive and unexplained inconsistencies across studies that may be due to ( a) insufficient attention to measurement error, ( b) subtle but age-sensitive differences in alternative measures of the same trait, or ( c) different perspectives reflected in self-reports and observer ratings. Multiscale, multimethod-and ideally multinational-studies are needed. Several hypotheses have been proposed to account for trait stability and change, but supporting evidence is currently weak or indirect; trait development is a fertile if sometimes frustrating field for theory and research. Beyond traits, there are approaches to personality development that are of interest to students of adult development, and these may be fruitfully addressed from a trait perspective.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify systematic relationships between personality domains and engagement in HIV care and secondary HIV prevention among sexual minority men living with HIV., Methods: This cross-sectional study examined the relationships between general personality traits of the Five-Factor Model of personality (e.g., Neuroticism and Conscientiousness) and engagement in medical care and condomless anal intercourse among a sample of highly sexually active sexual minority men living with HIV (N = 60)., Results: Conscientiousness (B = -0.01, P < 0.05), Openness (B = -0.03, P < 0.05), and Extraversion (B = -0.03, P < 0.001) were each associated with engaging in fewer episodes of condomless anal intercourse and Conscientiousness alone was significantly related to having fewer sexual partners (B = -0.04, P < 0.001). Conscientiousness (odds ratio [OR] = 1.07, confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.13) and Extraversion (OR = 1.13, CI: 1.04-1.22) were both associated significantly with prevention service use. Conscientiousness alone was related to engagement in HIV medical case management (B = -0.11, P < 0.05), whereas both Conscientiousness (B = 0.41, P < 0.0001) and Neuroticism (B = -0.64, P < 0.001) were associated with perceived health. Furthermore, compared with the normative sample for the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised, men in our sample scored significantly higher on Neuroticism and significantly lower on Conscientiousness (Ps < 0.05)., Conclusion: These findings suggest that enduring individual differences may account, in part, for some of the high levels of condomless anal intercourse reported by this group, as well as engagement in and use of prevention services. We suggest strategies for engaging this group in secondary HIV prevention programs and initiatives.
