9. Enhanced physicochemical and biological properties of ion-implanted Titanium using Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion sources

Abstract

The surface properties of metallic implants play an important role in their clinical success. Improving upon the inherent shortcomings of Ti implants, such as poor bioactivity, is imperative for achieving clinical use. In this study, we have developed a Ti implant modified with Ca or dual Ca + Si ions on the surface using an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). The physicochemical and biological properties of ion-implanted Ti surfaces were analyzed using various analytical techniques, such as surface analyses, potentiodynamic polarization and cell culture. Experimental results indicated that a rough morphology was observed on the Ti substrate surface modified by ECRIS plasma ions. The in vitro electrochemical measurement results also indicated that the Ca + Si ion-implanted surface had a more beneficial and desired behavior than the pristine Ti substrate. Compared to the pristine Ti substrate, all ion-implanted samples had a lower hemolysis ratio. MG63 cells cultured on the high Ca and dual Ca + Si ion-implanted surfaces revealed significantly greater cell viability in comparison to the pristine Ti substrate. In conclusion, surface modification by electron cyclotron resonance Ca and Si ion sources could be an effective method for Ti implants.

Abstract

Calcium silicate (CaSi) bone cement with antibacterial and osteogenic properties has attracted significant interest. However, there is a need to develop a variety of new premixed bone cement to meet the clinical requirements of fast setting time, ease of handling, and efficient antibacterial properties. In this study, different volume ratios of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and lactic acid liquids were added to calcium silicate, and the effects of varying liquid-to-powder ratios (L/P) were examined. This study assessed the physicochemical properties, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli of this premixed cement. The results from the experiments indicated that lactic acid significantly reduced the setting time of the CaSi-based cement and enhanced its mechanical strength. Furthermore, the appropriate concentration of lactic acid and matching L/P ratio improved its washout resistance. The cell viability of all premixed cement was found to be over 80%. The premixed cement containing PEG and lactic acid exhibited superior antibacterial properties compared to the CaSi control. Based on its setting time, washout resistance, and antibacterial activity, a premixed cement with a liquid phase of 80% PEG and 20% lactic acid at an L/P ratio of 0.4 appeared promising for use in dental and orthopedic practice. Abstract

Purpose: Rapid sintering technology has become one of the most direct methods for shortening the manufacturing time of zirconia restorations. This study aimed to explore the aging resistance of rapid-sintered 5 mol% yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ).Methods: Specimens were made from two types of 5Y-PSZ material and subjected to rapid sintering (RS) and conventional sintering (CS). After in vitro aging for 5 h, morphology observation, grain size measurement, and phase composition analysis were performed. The mechanical properties were evaluated by biaxial, three-point flexural tests, and the Vickers microhardness test. Results were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA.Results: Both the RS group and the CS group had a dense microstructure. The tested zirconia ceramics had different grain sizes, which were affected by the interaction between the sintering method and aging. Both groups revealed the same characteristic peaks of the cubic phase after aging. Regardless of the sintering method used, there was no significant difference in the mechanical properties of the tested zirconia before and after aging.Conclusion: The rapid-sintered 5Y-PSZ materials had a microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties similar to those of conventional sintered materials. 44. The research on the dental bridge model-making process based on the curing shrinkage epoxy and residual stress reduction

Abstract

Elderly people suffer from more and more teeth problems. The tooth-implant-supported prosthesis provides a reliable solution to missing teeth patients. The proper dental prosthesis design to prevent overstress is essential due to the mechanical characteristics of the dental bridge abutments are different. The finite element method is widely applied, but proper experimental validation is required. The curing shrinkage epoxy is applied for the photoelasticity measurement because its mechanical property is close to the cancellous bone. A series of process developments, including mold design, residual stress releasing and artificial soft film making, is accomplished in this research to simulate the mechanical response of dental bridges in practice. The process is proven and can be accomplished at the dentist's workshop. The transmission photoelasticity technique is applied to measure the residual stress distribution and it nondestructively provides the continuous improvement guideline. The model-making procedure and tools are proven to be available at the dental workshop. Following the model-making procedure, the dental bridge model shows a low residual stress level that the photoelasticity system cannot detect. Excellent reproducibility of the proposed procedure has been validated. These models exhibit stable maximum stress of 2.13 MPa around the natural tooth apex and apical implant region when a 300 N vertical loading is applied upon the dental bridge. Finally, a finite element model of the dental bridge, including the natural tooth and dental implant, is built and validated by the photoelastic measurement.
