Eikenella corrodens is a normal flora, Gram-negative bacilli colonizing the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract's oral cavity and mucosa surfaces. It can cause severe invasive disease in humans but rarely causes central nervous system infections, especially in children. This study aims to highlight the clinical presentations of central nervous infection caused by the fastidious organism, E. corrodens in children and to raise awareness among paediatricians and microbiologists. We report a case of a child with multiple cerebral abscesses complicated by hydrocephalus caused by E. corrodens, which was believed to be associated with dental infection and submandibular abscess secondary to poor dental hygiene. The child underwent dental clearance with oral rehabilitation before proceeded with drainage of cerebral abscess. Despite surgical drainage and appropriate antimicrobial therapy, the child passed away three weeks after admission. E. corrodens should be considered as a causative agent of central nervous system infection especially when there is a high risk of exposure to oral flora such as dental infections and periodontal manipulations. Background: The HACEK group comprises Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella kingae, are Gram-negative bacteria that are slow-growing and fastidious. These organisms are common causes of culture-negative endocarditis. However, brain abscesses caused by Haemophilus aphrophilus and E. corrodens have been rarely reported. The case we describe, which was promptly identified and successfully treated, will be meaningful for the diagnosis and treatment of such infectious diseases. Case Presentation: Herein, we report a case of brain abscess in a young man who was infected with Haemophilus aphrophilus and E. corrodens. The patient was admitted to the hospital with sudden onset of vomiting, coma, and fever. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid cell counts suggested cerebral abscess, he underwent drainage of the abscess and empirical antimicrobial therapy of meropenem (2 g every 8 hours) and linezolid (0.6 g every 12 hours) for more than 10 days without significant improvement. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of drainage fluid and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) detection for isolated bacteria from samples suggested the presence of H. aphrophilus and E. corrodens. After 7 weeks of ceftriaxone (2 g every 12 hours) and meropenem (2 g every 8 hours) intravenously, the patient was discharged with a normal temperature and brain MRI showed improvement of the lesion. Conclusion: Similar cases reported in previous studies were always associated with bacterial blood dissemination after dental surgery or myocarditis; however, the patient in our case had no any associated risk factors. As far as we know, this is the only case of central nervous system infection caused by H. aphrophilus and E. corrodens that has utilized combined mNGS and MALDI-TOF MS in the diagnosis. Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics of erosive Eikenella corrodens, and to provide basis for clinical diagnosis and empirical treatment. Methods The clinical characteristics of 15 patients diagnosed with erosive Escherichia coli infection in the hospital from January 2015 to October 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Results The main clinical manifestations of fifteen patients were local swelling and pain in the maxillofacial and cervical regions, abdominal abscess, and brain abscess. Fifteen strains of Erective Escherichia coli were mainly isolated from self draining fluids. Escherichia coli was resistant to penicillin. ceftriax one, and levofloxacin, with sensitivity rates of 53. 3%.93.3%, and 80.0%, respectively. The sensitivity rates to imipenem, meropenem, ampicillin, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole were all 100.0%. Conclusion Erective Escherichia coli mainly causes acute suppurative infections and forms local abscesses. Imipenem and meropenem can be used as empirical drugs for the treatment of erosive Escherichia coli infection. and timely and continuous debridement and flushing surgery can be performed on patients, with good results. Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Gram-negative bacteria is a rare and insufficiently characterized form of endocarditis. The literature review presents data on the frequency, course, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of both IE caused by the HACEK microorganisms (Haemophilus spр., Aggregatibacter spp., Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, Kingella) and other Gram-negative bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria are the cause of 3.6–13.6 % IE cases (HACEK microorganisms in 0.8–3 % of IE cases in adults, non-HACEK in 1.8–3.9 %). Patients with IE caused by the HACEK microorganisms are younger, their disease is not associated with previous in-hospital treatment and is subacute with favorable prognosis (intrahospital mortality is 2–3 %). HACEK microorganisms mostly retain sensitivity to many antibiotics. Risk factors of IE caused by HACEK microorganisms are dental interventions, heart disorders, valve prostheses and other implanted cardiac devices. IE caused by non-HACEK Gram-negative bacteria is more common in elderly with concomitant disorders and usually is acute; intrahospital mortality is 13–36.5 %. Risk factors of IE caused by non-HACEK microorganisms are valve prostheses, electrical pacemakers, venous and central catheters, recent in-hospital treatment, Gram-negative bacteremia, decreased immunity, drug abuse, urinary infection, alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, removed spleen, consequences of dog and cat bites, working with the soil. Among Gram-negative non-HACEK bacteria causing IE, 28 % have multi-drug resistance (MDR / XDR) against antibiotics. Therefore, Gram-negative bacteria rarely cause IE but during selection of empiric therapy in patients with IE with corresponding risk factors, probability of Gram-negative causative microorganisms in IE etiology should be taken into account.

Abstract Background Granulicatella adiacens is facultative anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria, which mainly involve bacterial endocarditis and bacteremia, but there are few reports of local suppurative infection. A case of lung abscess with a coinfection of Granulicatella adiacens and other bacteria in a lung cancer patient will be reported in this paper. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing lung abscess due to G.adiacens. Case presentation A 52-year-old Chinese woman was admitted to the hospital, She complained of coughing and expectoration for 1 month, shortness of breath for half a month, and dyspnea for 1 day. After a series of examinations, she was diagnosed with lung abscess, pleural effusion, and bronchogenic carcinoma. Draining pus culture demonstrated Granulicatella adiacens. After more than 5 weeks of antibiotic therapies in total, she gradually recovered to fight against lung cancer. Conclusion This is the first reported lung abscess caused by G.adiacens. In immunosuppressed hosts, G.adiacens is a virulent pathogen associated with a spectrum of intrathoracic suppurative. Earlier diagnosis and proper drainage surgery with effective antibiotics treatment are very important, and antimicrobial treatment should be more than 5 weeks. When complex pulmonary infection interferes with the CT diagnosis, clinical suspicion of lung cancer should be increased if G.adiacens or Eikenella corrodens is detected from a pulmonary infection.

Objective   Eikenella corrodens is a slow-growing, fastidious, non-motile, facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative bacillus that is commonly found in the human oropharynx. Although many cases have been reported in the adult population, only few cases of brain abscesses caused by E.corrodens have been reported in children so far. Methods Here, we reported the case of a 29-month-old female with complaints of weakness in the right leg twice in the past 3 weeks. Imaging studies revealed a brain abscess in the left parietofrontal lobe. The patient underwent surgery for abscess drainage, microbiological samples were obtained and empirical antibiotic treatment was started. Abscess culture showed the growth of E.corrodens. The bacteria were found to be sensitive to ceftriaxone; hence, the therapy was continued for 46 days with ceftriaxone. A final computed tomography showed the resolution of the abscess. The patient's clinical condition improved and she was discharged without any sequelae. Conclusion Brain abscess should be considered when patients present with neurological deficits. As far as we know, there are only six reported cases of brain abscesses only due to E.corrodens in the pediatric population. Since it is a slow-growing pathogen, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for patient survival. This case supports the combination of surgical drainage and antibiotics for treatment. Abstract Background Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus, which are primary colonization bacteria of the normal flora of the oropharynx, are infrequent bacteria, especially the former. Here, we report a case of lung abscess with a coinfection of Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus in a lung cancer patient. Case presentation A 66-year-old Chinese man with lung cancer was admitted to the hospital, complaining of a cough and expectoration for five months and fever for two months. After a series of inspections to differentiate a cancer-related fever from an infectious fever, he was diagnosed with lung abscess. Draining pus culture demonstrated Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus. After more than 1 month of antibiotic therapy and draining in total, he gradually recovered to fight against lung cancer. Conclusion This report highlights the increased pathogenicity of Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus in an immunocompromised cancer patient, especially after a few invasive operations. Additionally, even though a patient has been diagnosed with cancerous fever, strong vigilance is needed in case an infection arises.

Abstract Background Eikenella corrodens is a slowly growing gram-negative bacillus that can cause severe invasive disease in human. Although E. corrodens infections in various sites of human body have been well described, pericarditis caused by invasive E. corrodens has rarely been reported. Case presentation Here we report the case of a 63-year old male with a complaint of left shoulder pain. The patient was diagnosed as purulent pericarditis by chest computed tomography scan and ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis, and the pathogen of E. corrodens was identified in the pericardial fluid culture. The clinical condition of the patient deteriorated quickly, and he died right after the drainage surgery even though the pathogen was sensitive to antibiotics treatment. Conclusion E. corrodens is a rare pericarditis associated pathogen. Purulent pericarditis caused by E. corrodens presents atypical manifestations and rapid progression of infection in immunosuppressed individuals such as neutropenic patients. Earlier diagnosis and proper drainage surgery with effective antibiotics treatment may improve the prognosis.

Abstract Objective The aim of the present study is to compare and assess the risk of periodontitis due to the presence of four putative periodontopathic bacteria viz., Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter rectus, Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens. To fulfil the above objective, polymerase Chain reaction using the primers targeting 16S rRNA gene of the bacterial species was performed with the subgingival plaque collected from the permanent first molars of type 1 diabetic children and age matched healthy children. Results The prevalence of periodontal pathogens in diabetic and healthy children was 6% and 16% for E. corrodens, 18% and 36% for C. rectus, 2% and 2% for P. intermedia, 4% and 0%, for P. nigrescens respectively. Statistically, significant difference was not observed for the prevalence of all the four periodontal pathogens between type 1 diabetic and healthy children (P = 1.00). The results of the present study thus reveal a negative correlation of type I diabetes to periodontitis in association to Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter rectus, Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens.

Introduction: Foreign-body ingestion is a common event, but in only less than 1% of the cases complications occur. Hepatic abscesses induced by foreign-body penetration are rare. To date, there are only 62 reported cases of hepatic abscess secondary to fish bone perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Case Presentation: A 78-year-old male patient was admitted due to high fever and vomiting for 2 days, along with frequent eructations for the past 3 months. Abdominal ultrasound showed a liver abscess in the left lobe, and computed tomography revealed a hyperdense linear image that crossed the superior wall of the gastric antrum, contacting the liver lesion, suggestive of a foreign body, probably a fish bone. Blood cultures were positive with isolation of Streptococcus anginosus and Eikenella corrodens. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage of the abscess was done, and S. anginosus was isolated in the pus. Surgical debridement and fish bone removal were performed; the patient completed 21 days of antibiotic therapy, with a favorable evolution. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of liver abscess caused by fish bone penetration with isolation of S. anginosus and E. corrodens. Bacterial coaggregation is one of the mechanisms that can explain their ability for causing invasive infections away from the oral cavity, by increasing their resistance to the innate immune system and survival of both species.

Background: The bacterium Eikenella , classified as a gram-negative member of the phylum Proteobacteria, is distinguished by its rarity, corrosive nature, facultative anaerobic properties, and conditional pathogenicity. It represents the sole species within its genus- Eikenella corrodens ( E. corrodens )-and can be found colonizing both human and animal oral and nasopharyngeal regions. Additionally, it occasionally inhabits the gastrointestinal or urogenital tracts. However, its slow growth rate can be attributed to its high nutritional requirements. However, there is an uneven distribution of construction and diagnostic capacity in China which poses undeniable challenges for the clinical examination and analysis of this case, especially in the basic hospitals., Case Summary: Here we presented a case of empyema associated with E. corrodens infection in a 67-year-old male patient without any previous history of infectious diseases in our primary hospital in Dongguan district of China. The patient was admitted due to recurrent worsening cough, sputum production, and dyspnea for 3 d, which had persisted for over 20 years. Moreover, the patient experienced a one-hour episode of unconsciousness. Upon admission, immediate comprehensive examinations were conducted on the patient which subsequently led to his admission to the intensive care unit. Meanwhile, the patient presented with drowsiness and profuse sweating along with bilateral conjunctival edema observed during initiation of non-invasive ventilation, suggesting empyema. A significant amount of coffee-colored malodorous pleural fluid was drained during the procedure above and sent to the laboratory department for inspection. Finally, laboratory culture results confirmed the presence of E. corrodens infection in the pleural fluid sample. The patient received antimicrobial therapy until died on day 22 in the hospital., Conclusion: In this report, we presented a case of empyema associated with E. corrodens infection. Multiple courses of morphological examination, viable culture analysis, and biochemical identification revealed its difficulties in detecting distinctive characteristics, as well as a detection model worth promoting. ABSTRACT Acute suppurative thyroiditis is a very rare and life-threatening endocrine emergency. Thyrotoxicosis is a rare condition accompanying acute suppurative thyroiditis. While the majority of the cases in the literature are caused by different reasons, spontaneous development is very rare. We present a patient with acute suppurative thyroiditis who presented to our clinic with thyrotoxic findings, and we compared the case to the literature. A 31-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with a complaint of progressive neck pain, swelling and redness on midline neck, fever, and palpitations. On physical examination, swelling, redness and tenderness were detected on the neck region that was consistent with the thyroid location. He presented with tremor on the hands, tachycardia and agitation. Thyroid function tests were compatible with thyrotoxicosis, but there were findings supporting the presence of infection in biochemistry tests. On his radiological evaluations, a heterogeneous lesion divided with small septs was observed, with consolidation areas in the left thyroid lobe. In fine needle aspiration biopsy, 2mL of purulent fluid could be aspirated due to the presence of small, separated consolidation areas. He initiated on antibiotic therapy, propranolol, steroid and symptomatic treatment. Eikenella corrodens was detected on the culture antibiogram. Antibiotic therapy was continued for 14 days due to less symptoms and better biochemical values. After treatment, the patient had normal thyroid function, had relief of fever and redness of the neck, and was followed-up. It should be kept in mind that acute suppurative thyroiditis may develop spontaneously with the findings of thyrotoxicosis, with no risk factors.

A 35-year-old male presented with headaches and fevers. MRI of his head showed skull-based infection of the clivus extended to the right internal carotid artery. Blood and sinus cultures were positive for Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus anginosus. He had intravenous antibiotics and sinus washout. The patient had full neurological recovery following this.

Background and aim: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been suggested as a novel technique for decontamination of exposed implant surfaces. We aimed to evaluate the effect of aPDT on sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) titanium discs contaminated with Eikenella corrodens (Ec) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). Materials and methods: In this in-vitro study, twenty-four sterile SLA titanium discs were contaminated with Ec (PTCC® 1391) and Aa )ATCC® 33384( and were randomly divided into the following groups: aPDT-treated group consisted of 12 discs submerged in 1 ml of toluidine blue and exposed to a low-level laser; negative control group comprised of 6 discs rinsed with physiological saline, and positive control group included 6 discs submerged in 2 ml of 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX). After serial dilution, each sample was cultivated in an anaerobic environment (24 hours for Ec and 48 hours for Aa). Microbial reduction rate was calculated through colony-forming unit (CFU) counting according to Kruskal-Wallis test. Abstract Background Gemella bergeri is one of the nine species of the genus Gemella and is relatively difficult to identify. We herein describe the first case of septic shock due to a Gemella bergeri coinfection with Eikenella corrodens. Case presentation A 44-year-old Asian man with a medical history of IgG4-related ophthalmic disease who was prescribed corticosteroids (prednisolone) presented to our hospital with dyspnea. On arrival, he was in shock, and a purpuric eruption was noted on both legs. Contrast enhanced computed tomography showed fluid retention at the right maxillary sinus, left lung ground glass opacity, and bilateral lung irregular opacities without cavitation. Owing to suspected septic shock, fluid resuscitation and a high dose of vasopressors were started. In addition, meropenem, clindamycin, and vancomycin were administered. Repeat computed tomography confirmed left internal jugular and vertebral vein thrombosis. Following this, the patient was diagnosed with Lemierre’s syndrome. Furthermore, he went into shock again on day 6 of hospitalization. Additional soft tissue infections were suspected; therefore, bilateral below the knee amputations were performed for source control. Cultures of the exudates from skin lesions and histopathological samples did not identify any pathogens, and histopathological findings showed arterial thrombosis; therefore it was concluded that the second time shock was associated with purpura fulminans. Following this, his general status improved. He was transferred to another hospital for rehabilitation. The blood culture isolates were identified as Gemella bergeri and Eikenella corrodens. Gemella bergeri was identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing later. The primary focus of the infection was thought to be in the right maxillary sinus, because the resolution of the fluid retention was confirmed by repeat computed tomography. Conclusions Gemella bergeri can be the causative pathogen of septic shock. If this pathogen cannot be identified manually or through commercial phenotypic methods, 16S rRNA gene sequencing should be considered.

Abstract Background Eikenella corrodens is one of the HACEK bacteria constituting part of the normal flora of the oropharynx, however, still an uncommon pathogen. We report a case of a large Eikenella corrodens liver abscess with simultaneously endocarditis in a previously healthy male. Case presentation A 49-year-old Danish man was admitted because of one-month malaise, fever, cough and unintentional weight loss. On admission there was elevated white blood cell count and C-reactive protein, as well as affected liver function tests. Initially pneumonia was suspected, but due to lack of improvement on pneumonia treatment, a PET-CT scan was performed, which showed a large multiloculated abscess in the liver. The abscess was drained using ultrasound guidance. Culture demonstrated Eikenella corrodens. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed aortic endocarditis. The patient was treated with antibiotics and abscess drainage, on which he slowly improved. He was discharged after 1.5 months of hospitalisation. On follow-up 2 months later, the patient was asymptomatic with normalized biochemistry and ultrasound showed complete regression of the abscess. Conclusions This is the first case of documented Eikenella corrodens concurrent liver abscess and endocarditis. The case report highlights that Eikenella corrodens should be considered as a cause of liver abscess. Empirical treatment of pyogenic liver abscess will most often cover Eikenella corrodens, but the recommended treatment is a third generation cephalosporin or a fluoroquinolon. A multiloculated liver abscess may require drainage several times during treatment. The finding of Eikenella corrodens should elicit an echocardiography to diagnose endocarditis even in patients without clinical signs of endocarditis.

After treatment, the patient had normal thyroid function, had relief of fever and redness of the neck, and was followed-up. Surgical drainage was performed since systemic treatment with antibiotics was insufficient in both cases. Eikenella corrodens, which is a slow‐growing microorganism, was identified as the causative pathogen in one case. To our knowledge, this is the first report of mediastinitis occurring over a month after EBUS‐TBNA. Clinicians should consider the diagnosis of mediastinitis even if symptoms appear over a month after EBUS‐TBNA.

Eikenella corrodens is a facultatively anaerobic gram-negative rod bacterium in the oropharynx and respiratory tract. It is a member of HACEK (Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter spp., Cardiobacterium hominis , E. corrodens , and Kingella kingae) group commonly associated with endocarditis and craniofacial infections. It is usually susceptible to penicillin, second and third-generation cephalosporins, and carbapenem, but has variable susceptibility to first-generation cephalosporin. We herein provide a description of the first case of pediatric acute dacryocystitis caused by E. corrodens. The patient did not respond to oral cephalexin and required surgical drainage followed by intravenous cefotaxime. Also provided is a brief review of the current literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Eikenella corrodens is one of the HACEK bacteria constituting part of the normal flora of the oropharynx, however, still an uncommon pathogen. We report a case of a large Eikenella corrodens liver abscess with simultaneously endocarditis in a previously healthy male.Case Presentation: A 49-year-old Danish man was admitted because of one-month malaise, fever, cough and unintentional weight loss. On admission there was elevated white blood cell count and C-reactive protein, as well as affected liver function tests. Initially pneumonia was suspected, but due to lack of improvement on pneumonia treatment, a PET-CT scan was performed, which showed a large multiloculated abscess in the liver. The abscess was drained using ultrasound guidance. Culture demonstrated Eikenella corrodens. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed aortic endocarditis. The patient was treated with antibiotics and abscess drainage, on which he slowly improved. He was discharged after 1.5 months of hospitalisation. On follow-up 2 months later, the patient was asymptomatic with normalized biochemistry and ultrasound showed complete regression of the abscess.Conclusions: This is the first case of documented Eikenella corrodens concurrent liver abscess and endocarditis. The case report highlights that Eikenella corrodens should be considered as a cause of liver abscess. Empirical treatment of pyogenic liver abscess will most often cover Eikenella corrodens, but the recommended treatment is a third generation cephalosporin or a fluoroquinolon. A multiloculated liver abscess may require drainage several times during treatment. The finding of Eikenella corrodens should elicit an echocardiography to diagnose endocarditis even in patients without clinical signs of endocarditis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eikenella corrodens has been noted as a causative organism in both neonatal and perinatal sepsis. Positivity of blood cultures at birth among preterm infants may be influenced by the maternal use of peripartum antimicrobials and a normal C-reactive protein result within the first 24 hours need not always reflect the absence of fetal invasion by the highly pathogenic organisms. For these reasons, supportive and adjunctive approaches such as appropriately collected placental swabs for culture would be of value in optimizing the antimicrobial choice for sick preterm infants during the early neonatal period. Fetal infection by E. corrodens detected by placental swab culture influencing antimicrobial management of an extremely premature infant with sepsis is described. Management of the youngest premature survivor with the lowest birthweight among the reported cases in English language of neonatal E. corrodens infection is summarized and literature is reviewed. Background: Presence of epithelial desquamation, erythema, and erosions on gingival tissue is usually described in the literature as desquamative gingivitis (DG). A wide range of autoimmune/dermatologic disorders can manifest as DG, although the two more common are oral lichen planus and mucous membrane pemphigoid. The aim of this study is to investigate prevalence of 11 periodontopathogenic microorganisms in patients with DG and to compare it with the microbiologic status of individuals affected by plaque-induced gingivitis (pGI).Methods: Cross-sectional clinical and microbiologic data were obtained from 66 patients (33 in each group). Subgingival plaque samples were analyzed using semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis.Results: Statistically significant difference, but with little clinical significance, was observed in gingival conditions between the two groups, probably due to the worse home control hygiene of patients with DG. Prevalence and levels of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Eikenella corrodens, and Fusobacterium nucleatum/periodonticum were statistically higher in samples from patients with DG than in those with pGI. In multivariate regression models, subgingival colonization of A. actinomycetemcomitans and F. nucleatum/periodonticum was not statistically associated with DG, whereas, high levels of E. corrodens were associated with 13-fold increased odds for DG.Conclusions: Microbiologic differences were found in subgingival plaque for patients with DG and pGI. Eikenella corrodens1073 was found to show hemolytic activity when grown on sheep blood agar. A high and dose-dependent hemolytic activity was detected in the cell envelope fraction, which was further purified by ion-exchange and gel-filtration chromatography. Consequently, a 65-kDa protein with hemolytic activity was obtained, suggesting that this protein might be a hemolysin. Its N-terminal amino acid sequence was nearly identical to that of X-prolyl aminopeptidase fromE. corrodensATCC 23834. To confirm that X-prolyl aminopeptidase functions as a hemolytic factor, we expressed thehlyAgene, encoding X-prolyl aminopeptidase, inEscherichia coli. After induction with isopropyl β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside, a protein of about 65 kDa was purified on a Ni column, and its hemolytic activity was confirmed. Meanwhile, a strain with a disruptedhlyAgene, which was constructed by homologous recombination, did not show any hemolytic activity. Background: This study tests the effects of scaling and root planing (SRP) versus SRP plus minocycline hydrochloride microspheres (SRP+MM) on 11 periodontal pathogens and clinical outcomes in Stage II-IV Grade B periodontitis participants., Methods: Seventy participants were randomized to receive SRP (n = 35) or SRP+MM (n = 35). Saliva and clinical outcomes were collected for both groups at baseline before SRP, 1-month reevaluation, and at 3- and 6-month periodontal recall. MM were delivered to pockets ≥5 mm immediately after SRP and immediately after the 3-month periodontal maintenance in the SRP+MM group. A proprietary saliva test * was utilized to quantitate 11 putative periodontal pathogens. Microorganisms and clinical outcomes were compared between groups using generalized linear mixed-effects models with fixed effects and random effects terms. Mean changes from baseline were compared between groups via group-by-visit interaction tests., Results: Significant reduction in Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Parvimonas micra, and Eikenella corrodens were identified at the 1-month reevaluation after SRP+MM. Six months after SRP with a re-application of MM 3 months after SRP, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Campylobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens were significantly reduced. SRP+MM participants had significant clinical outcome reductions in pockets ≥5 mm at the reevaluation, 3- and 6-month periodontal maintenance, and clinical attachment loss gains at the 6-month periodontal maintenance., Conclusion: MM delivered immediately after SRP and reapplication at 3 months appeared to contribute to improved clinical outcomes and sustained decreased numbers of Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Campylobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens at 6 months., (© 2023 American Academy of Periodontology.)

Eikenella corrodens is one of the HACEK bacteria that is commensal microorganism of the oropharngeal flora. E. corrodens has been increasingly reported to cause pyogenic abscesses, especially in diabetic or immunocompromised adults. It is less frequently reported in immunocompotent children. Here, we report a deep neck infection, including the thyroid gland, in a previously healthy girl. E. corrodens was the only microorganism isolated in two different cultures. Antibiotic susceptibility is variable, in contrast to other oropharyngeal pathogens.
