We demonstrate a compact, partially end-pumping Innoslab laser based on a micro-cylindrical lens array homogenizer. A dimension of 12 × 0.4 mm2 flat-top pumping line with a Gaussian intensity distribution across the line was simulated by the ray tracing technique. The rate equations considering the asymmetric transverse spatial distributions are theoretically developed. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Preliminary data shows that for a pump power of 260 W, a maximum pulse energy of 15.7 mJ was obtained with a pulse width of 8.5 ns at a repetition frequency of 1 kHz. The beam quality M2 factors in the unstable and stable directions were 1.732 and 1.485, respectively. The technology has been successfully applied to temperature and humidity profiling lidar and ozone lidar and has been productized, yielding direct economic value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the fact that the vibration and pure rotational Raman signals collected by the temperature and humidity profile lidar were 3–4 orders of magnitude weaker than the Mie scattering signal, they were susceptible to electronic and white noise interference, which seriously affected the system signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, an improved VMD-WT filtering method was adopted to extract effective signals and denoise. The processing outcome of several filtering algorithms was evaluated, and noisy signals were simulated to confirm the algorithm's efficacy. Based on the quantitative computation of evaluation indicators, such as signal-to-noise ratio, root mean square error, and correlation, the improved VMD-WT algorithm had more significant advantages in indicators such as signal-to-noise ratio. In order to further verify the robustness and adaptability of the proposed algorithm, experimental analysis of the filtering algorithm was conducted on the continuously collected temperature and humidity measured signals. The results demonstrated that the algorithm not only improved the detection range of lidar and suppressed high-altitude noise effectively, but also performed well in processing strong interference signals, like clouds, which led to a significant improvement in the atmospheric optical parameter inversion results. Furthermore, pseudo-color images of aerosols, temperature, and humidity changes over time and space have been used to further illustrate the algorithm's dependability and wide range of potential uses. Due to the influence of geometric factors, the temperature and humidity profile of lidar's near-field signal was warped when sensing the air environment. In order to perform geometric factor correction on near-field signals, this article proposes different correction solutions for the Mie and Raman scattering channels. Here, the Mie scattering channel used the Raman method to invert the aerosol backscatter coefficient and correct the extinction coefficient in the transition zone. The geometric factor was the ratio of the measured signal to the forward-computed vibration Raman scattering signal. The aerosol optical characteristics were reversed using the corrected echo signal, and the US standard atmospheric model was added to the missing signal in the blind zone, reflecting the aerosol evolution process. The stability and dependability of the proposed algorithm were validated by the consistency between the visibility provided by the Environmental Protection Agency and the visibility acquired via lidar retrieval data. The near-field humidity data were supplemented by the interpolation method in the Raman scattering channel to reflect the water vapor transfer process in the temporal dimension. The measured transmittance curve of the filter, the theoretical normalized spectrum, and the sounding data were used to compute the delay geometric factor. The temperature was retrieved and the near-field signal distortion issue was resolved by applying the corrected quotient of the temperature channel. The proposed algorithm exhibited robustness and universality, enhancing the system's detection accuracy compared to the temperature and humidity data constantly recorded by the probes in the meteorological gradient tower, which have a high correlation with the lidar observation data. The comparison between lidar data and instrument monitoring data showed that the proposed algorithm could effectively correct distorted echo signals in the transition zone, which was of great value for promoting the application of lidar in the meteorological monitoring of the urban canopy layer. Differential absorption lidar is an advanced tool for investigating tropospheric ozone transport and development. High-quality differential absorption lidar data are the basis for studying the temporal and spatial evolution of ozone pollution. We assessed the quality of the ozone data generated via differential absorption lidar. By correcting the ozone lidar profile in real-time with an atmospheric correction term and comparing the lidar data to ozone data collected using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), we quantified the statistical error of the ozone lidar data in the vertical direction and determined that the data from the two instruments were generally in agreement. To verify the reliability of the ozone lidar system and the atmospheric correction algorithm, we conducted a long-term comparison experiment using data from the Canton Tower. Over the two months, the UAV and lidar data were consistent with one another, which confirmed the viability of the ozone lidar optomechanical structure and the atmospheric correction algorithm, both in real-time and over a given time duration. In addition, we also quantified the relationship between statistical error and signal-to-noise ratio. When the SNR is less than 10, the corresponding statistical error is about 40%. The statistical error was less than 15% when the signal-to-noise ratio was greater than 20, and the statistical error was mostly less than 8% when the signal-to-noise ratio was greater than 40. In order to investigate the variations of cloud and aerosol vertical profiles over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in winter, we performed ground-based lidar observations in Lhasa, a city on the TP, from November 2021 to January 2022. The profiles of extinction coefficient, depolarization ratio, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were retrieved using the atmospheric echo signals collected by the lidar. Clouds were identified by the range-correction echo signals and classified into water clouds, mixed clouds, horizontally oriented ice crystal clouds (HOICC), and ice clouds by the depolarization ratio and the hourly temperature from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5). The clouds mainly appeared at a height of 3~5 km from 14:00–22:00 Beijing Time throughout the field campaign. The height and frequency (~30%) for cloud appearance were significantly lower than that reported in previous studies in summer. The cloud categories were dominated by mixed clouds and ice clouds during the observation period. The proportions of ice clouds gradually increased with increasing heights. After eliminating profiles influenced by clouds, the aerosol extinction coefficient and depolarization ratio were obtained, and the atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) was calculated. The aerosol extinction coefficient decreased with increasing height in the ABLH, and there were no obvious changes for the aerosol extinction coefficient above the ABL. The aerosol extinction coefficients near the Earth's surface presented two peaks, appearing in the morning and evening, respectively. The high aerosols at the surface in the morning continually spread upward for 4–5 h and finally reached an altitude of 1 km with the development of ABLH. In addition, the depolarization ratio of aerosols decreased slowly with increasing altitudes. There was no obvious diurnal variation for depolarization ratios, indicating partly that the source of aerosols did not change significantly. In the Multi-Axis Differential Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) trace gas and aerosol profile inversion algorithm, the vertical resolution and the observation information obtained through a series of continuous observations with multiple elevation angles (EAs) can affect the accuracy of an aerosol profile, thus further affecting the results of the gas profile. Therefore, this study examined the effect of the vertical resolution of an aerosol profile and EAs on the NO2 profile retrieval by combining simulations and measurements. Aerosol profiles were retrieved from MAX-DOAS observations and co-observed using light detection and ranging (Lidar). Three aerosol profile shapes (Boltzmann, Gaussian, and exponential) with vertical resolutions of 100 and 200 m were used in the atmospheric radiative transfer model. Firstly, the effect of the vertical resolution of the input aerosol profile on the retrieved aerosol profile with a resolution of 200 m was studied. The retrieved aerosol profiles from the two vertical resolution aerosol profiles as input were similar. The aerosol profile retrieved from a 100 m resolution profile as input was slightly overestimated compared to the input value, whereas that from a 200 m resolution input was slightly underestimated. The relative deviation of the aerosol profile retrieved from the 100 m resolution as input was higher than that of the 200 m. MAX-DOAS observations in Hefei city on 4 September 2020 were selected to verify the simulation results. The aerosol profiles retrieved from the oxygen collision complex (O4) differential slant column density derived from MAX-DOAS observations and Lidar simulation were compared with the input Lidar aerosol profiles. The correlation between the retrieved and input aerosol profiles was high, with a correlation coefficient R > 0.99. The aerosol profiles retrieved from the Lidar profile at 100 and 200 m resolutions as input closely matched the Lidar aerosol profiles, consistent with the simulation result. However, aerosol profiles retrieved from MAX-DOAS measurements differed from the Lidar profiles due to the influence of the averaging kernel matrix smoothing, the different location and viewing geometry, and uncertainties associated with the Lidar profiles. Next, NO2 profiles of different vertical resolutions were used as input profiles to retrieve the NO2 profiles under a single aerosol profile scenario. The effect of the vertical resolution on the retrieval of NO2 profiles was found to be less significant compared to aerosol retrievals. Using the Lidar aerosol profile as the a priori aerosol information had little effect on NO2 profile retrieval. Additionally, the retrieved aerosol profiles and aerosol optical depths varied under different EAs. Ten EAs (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 15, 30, and 90°) were found to obtain more information from observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A dual field of view lidar system with two independent receivers is described to realize the detection of atmospheric aerosols. A CCD camera is attached to a backscatter lidar as a receiver to complement the data in the near-field range affected by the incomplete overlap between the laser beam and the receiver field of view. The signal detected by the CCD camera is corrected and finally glued with the signal of the backscatter lidar to retrieve the aerosol extinction coefficient with Fernald algorithm. The aerosol extinction profile and visibilities measured by the dual field of lidar had been compared with the results measured by another general backscatter lidar and a surface aerosol instrument, respectively. The results suggested that the dual field of view lidar based on a CCD camera is feasible and reliable. It could obtain the data both in the near and in the far range simultaneously, improving the detection accuracy of the lidar system effectively.
