9. Critical Thinking Is a Noble Endeavor--A Response to Paul's Question: An Invited Essay

Abstract

Paul (2018a, 2018b) discussed the concept of critical thinking in a series of "American Annals of the Deaf" editorials examining how critical thinking might serve as a "springboard" to deep knowledge or wisdom and wondering if critical thinking should be viewed as a noble endeavor or hopeless cause. Paul explored three questions in which he considered (a) types of critical thinkers, (b) teaching and evaluating critical thinking, and (c) empathy's role in critical thinking. Responding to Paul, the author focuses on the same questions by summarizing Paul's view, then following with his own. He also explores the question "What is critical thinking?" Mostly, the author's views resemble Paul's, but he elaborates on places where he thinks gaps or possible misunderstandings exist. The author concludes that critical thinking is indeed a noble endeavor because it is not just what you think that matters, but how you think.

11. Development of a measure for assessing malingered incompetency in criminal proceedings: Denney competency related test (D-CRT).

Abstract

Experts frequently assess competency in criminal settings where the rate of feigning cognitive deficit is demonstrably elevated. We describe the construction and validation of the Denney Competency Related Test (D-CRT) to assess feigned incompetency of defendants in the criminal adjudicative setting. It was expected the D-CRT would prove effective at identifying feigned incompetence based on its two alternative, forced-choice and performance curve characteristics. Development and validation of the D-CRT occurred in described phases. Items were developed to measure competency based upon expert review. Item analysis and adjustments were completed with 304 young teenage volunteers to obtain a proper spread of item difficulty in preparation for eventual performance curve analysis (PCA). Test-retest reliability was assessed with 44 adult community volunteers. Validation included an analog simulation design with 101 jail detainees using MacArthur Competency Assessment Test-Criminal Adjudication and Word Memory Test as criterion measures. Effects of racial/ethnic demographic differences were examined in a separate study of 208 undergraduate volunteers. D-CRT specificity was identified with 46 elderly clinic referrals diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Item development, adjustment, and repeat analysis resulted in item probabilities evenly spread from.28 to 1.0. Test-retest correlation was good (.83). Internal consistency of items was excellent (KR-20 >.91). D-CRT demonstrated convergent validity in regard to measuring competency related information and as well as malingering. The test successfully differentiated between jail inmates asked to perforfm their best and inmates asked to simulate incompetency (AUC =.945). There were no statistically significant differences found in performance across racial/ethnic backgrounds. D-CRT specificity remained excellent among elderly clinic referrals with significant cognitive compromise at the recommended total score cutoff. D-CRT is an effective measure of feigned criminal incompetency in the context of potential cognitive deficiency, and PCA is assistive in the determination. 15. Combustion Dynamics of a Laminar Premixed Flame in a Rijke Tube

Abstract

Thermoacoustic instability which stems from the non-linear interactions between heat release and pressure waves in a confined combustion chamber, can create large amplitude pressure oscillations. These oscillations may cause significant damage to the combustor hardware, and even surroundings. Accurate characterization and prediction of such instability is challenging due to its inherent complexities arising from the non-linear nature of the problem.In this thesis, we design a Rijke tube, a device in which self-excited thermoacoustic instabilities can be studied for relatively simple flame geometries. Subsequently, we used the Rijke tube to investigate dynamics of thermoacoustic instability in premixed laminar flame. We focused on the role of burner design on the ensuing instability and flame dynamics by investigating pressure oscillations observed in four different single- and multi-flame burners. We observed that %a single- and seven-flame burner tip using similar flame conditions were experimentally compared, by recording pressure data. The the single-flame burner did not display transition to an unstable state, when the burner was traversed along the length of the Rijke tube, while a seven-flame burner showed various states of instability and multiple bifurcation points. This observation confirms that the increased degree of freedom, arising from the interaction between individual flames in a multi-fame burner, is responsible for the wider dynamics observed.Subsequently, to quantify the dynamics of individual flames and their roles in the ensuing pressure dynamics, a three flame burner, where the flames are located in-line, were studied in details. The Phase Lock Value, Root Mean Frequency, and Power Spectral Density were analyzed for the heat release rates from individual flames and the acoustic pressure. We observed that the center flame possessed stronger synchronization with the pressure. But, the left and right flames shared a few modes (frequencies) of oscillations with the pressure, that were not present in the center flame. This suggests that the dynamics that effect of the individual flames pose varying degrees of influence on the pressure dynamics.An additional experiment was also conducted using an asymmetric three-flame burner, where the flames are located at the tip of an isosceles triangle, using the same flame conditions. This flame showed stronger pressure oscillations, perhaps due to enhanced degrees of interactions between three flames with the symmetric design, and eventually suffered blow-off. These systematic investigations highlights the strong influence of local flame interactions on the observed pressure dynamics, which is relevant for design of multi-nozzle combustors.

21. Systematic literature review of the epidemiology of glycogen storage disease type 1a.

Abstract

Glycogen storage disease (GSD) type 1a is an inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disease caused by a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphatase activity. The objectives of this research were to systematically review the published literature on the epidemiology of GSD 1a and to assess the performance of reported epidemiology measures in a simulation model. In this systematic literature review 2,539 record titles and abstracts were screened. Of these, only 11 studies contained relevant data on GSD 1a disease epidemiology. Reported disease frequency ranged from 0.085/100,000 to 10.3/100,000 newborns when considering all the GSD literature. When this was narrowed to GSD 1 and GSD 1a, the range was tightened to 0.25–3.02/100,000 and 0.085–4.9/100,000 newborns, respectively. Most of the identified studies counted the number of diagnoses in a defined period and related to the number of births in the same (Dx method) or different time period (DoB method). The simulation model results indicate that in most of the situations, the Dx method provides a closer estimate to the true disease incidence than the DoB method. Despite the scarcity of epidemiology data, the results of this systematic review strongly support that GSD 1a and its parent disease groups (GSD and GSD 1) are rare diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Stroke significantly impairs health-related quality of life (HRQL). Stroke survivors with aphasia (SWA) experience lower HRQL than stroke survivors without aphasia (SSA) as a result of poorer communication and social functioning. The extent to which aphasia influences HRQL in African-Americans and the components of social functioning that are most important to HRQL warrants further exploration. There were two main objectives of this paper. The first was to survey HRQL domains of communication, physical, mental/emotional, role, and social functioning in African American SWA and SSA. The second was to examine if social support and social network predicted HRQL in SWA. A total of 39 African American adults (62.4 ± 11.10) participated in this descriptive cross-sectional case control study. Patient-reported outcome measures were used to assess HRQL, perceived social support, and social network in SWA, SSA, and normal-aging healthy controls (NAH). Data analysis included an ANOVA and moderator regression to determine if social support or social network predicted HRQL in SWA. SWA reported a significantly lower overall HRQL (p = <.000) than NAH adults. Communication HRQL was the hallmark difference found between SWA and SSA (p = <.000). Social support and social network were relatively similar among all three groups. However, social support and social network did not predict HRQL in SWA. Findings from this study suggest that social HRQL continues to be significantly lower in SWA; however, social support and social network factors do not drive differences among African-Americans. Abstract

Over the last decade, a number of subsea solutions have been deployed to unlock the commerciality of deepwater fields and increase the overall recovery factor of the reservoirs. Numerous types of monitoring and measurement technologies have been developed and installed downhole, subsea, and topside, but usually in a fragmented manner. The traditional field surveillance approach often addresses the reservoir challenges separately from issues that may affect flow in the production network or from processing facilities considerations. The value of information obtained using sensing equipment is then not fully taken advantage of, and critical information is lost due to the lack of integration. The objective of this work is to link all data collected along the fluid journey from the reservoir to the process facilties in order to optimize its production and better manage reservoir recovery. In this work, a novel integrated production management solution (IPMS) is introduced. Dedicated subsea and subsurface metering devices, advanced flow control equipment, production surveillance systems, and production optimization tools are combined to increase the understanding of the reservoir and subsea production network, maximize the value of the subsea hardware and address operational challenges to enable increased predictive flow assurance capabilities and production optimization. Bridging the gap from abstract measurement values to production management decisions, such as inflow control actuation; allow a better reservoir management implementation along of the field life, leading to an increased recovery. The functionality of the system is designed to address a number of challenges, including the following:reservoir management—recovery increase by combining continuous downhole sensing, seabed data, and IPMSEquipement centric monitoring and predictive maitenancethermal management—increase in system no-touch time and improved system preservationhydrate management—opex savings in regards to hydrate inhibitor injection and regenerationliquid management—avoiding unexpected shutdowns due to liquid surgespigging optimization—potential for reduced production losses during pigging operation and reduced pigging frequencylow temperature management—material integrity and hydrate preventioncorrosion and scale inhibition optimization—completion, subsea production system (SPS), and pipeline integrityerosion monitoring—SPSs and pipeline integrity. For the first time, integrated production data are used in online pore-to-process integrated models to guide reservoir decisions, optimize opex, and enhance recovery. Specific examples such as detection of reservoir property changes and their impact on recovery, optimized inorganic scale, and hydrates management based on integrated downhole seabed and process data are discussed in detail.

Should we stop teaching critical thinking? Meant as a prompt to further discussion, Critical Condition questions the assumption that every student should be turned into a “critical thinker.” The book starts with the pre-Socratics and the impact that Socrates’ death had on his student Plato and traces the increasingly violent use of critical “attack” on a perceived opponent. From the Roman militarization of debate to the medieval Church’s use of defence as a means of forcing confession and submission, the early phases of critical thinking were bound up in a type of attack that Finn suggests does not best serve intellectual inquiry. Recent developments have seen critical thinking become an ideology rather than a critical practice, with levels of debate devolving to the point where most debate becomes ad hominem. Far from arguing that we abandon critical inquiry, the author suggests that we emphasize a more open, loving system of engagement that is not only less inherently violent but also more robust when dealing with vastly more complex networks of information. This book challenges long-held beliefs about the benefits of critical thinking, which is shown to be far too linear to deal with the twenty-first century world. Critical Condition is a call to action unlike any other.
